Four for Goldey-Beacom’s Basketball Teams Garner CACC Weekly Awards

A perfect week on the basketball court combined between the men’s and women’s teams enabled the squads to take home a combined four weekly awards as presented by the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

The women’s side saw junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) named Player of the Week and freshman Nina Bartlette (Winthrop, MA/Winthrop) picked the Rookie of the Week. The men’s squad saw senior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week and senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD/Georgetown U.) selected to the Weekly Honor Roll.

Bruno had an incredible week with 29.0 points per game on 51 percent shooting (21-of-41), 8.0 rebounds per contest, 4.5 assists per game, seven 3-pointers and five steals over two games. Bruno on Saturday equaled her career high with 30 points on 12-of-22 shooting to go with seven rebounds, five assists and four 3-pointers in the Lightning’s 71-62 win at Holy Family. She also had 28 points on 9-of-19 shooting, nine rebounds, four assists and three 3-pointers in Goldey-Beacom’s 69-57 victory over Georgian Court.

One of the nation’s most explosive and prolific players, Bruno is 27th in the country with 19.3 points per game, 19th with 56 baskets, 32nd with 35.75 minutes per contest, 42nd with 21 made 3-pointers, 68th with 34 assists and 91st with 4.3 assists per game. She also is eighth in school history with 1,123 points, second with 324 assists, third with 149 three-pointers, fifth with 133 steals and seventh with 403 baskets.

Bartlette averaged 9.0 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 6.0 rebounds over two games. She had 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and seven rebounds Saturday at Holy Family after getting eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and five rebounds Wednesday vs. Georgian Court.

A budding presence in the frontcourt, Bartlette is third on the team with 5.1 points per game, second with a .471 shooting percentage and third with 4.3 rebounds per contest over just 14.6 minutes per game.

Ridgeway-Higgs ended the week averaging 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals over two games. He closed Wednesday against Georgian Court with eight rebounds and two steals to go with seven assists and 10 points in an 80-50 win. That impressive effort paled in comparison to Saturday, when he had seven rebounds, five steals, 14 points and nine assists at Holy Family in a 92-62 triumph.

A reliable player in all facets, Ridgeway-Higgs leads the CACC and is 55th in the country with 5.1 assists per game in addition to being 25th in the nation with a 3.18 assist-to-turnover ratio. He is tied for ninth in school history with 192 career assists, just outside the top 10 with 85 three-pointers and has 592 career points.

Williams averaged 15.0 points on 13-of-24 shooting, 6.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals over two games. He started his week with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, five assists, four rebounds and two steals Wednesday vs. Georgian Court. Williams closed it Saturday with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals Saturday at Holy Family.

Williams is 32nd in the conference with 11.6 points per game, 10th with a .400 three-point percentage, 15th with a .470 shooting percentage and 41st with 4.3 rebounds per contest.

Both teams are home Tuesday against Chestnut Hill with the women going at 6:00 pm and the men at 8:00 pm.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Names Pablo Montana Men’s Tennis Head Coach
DATE: December 5, 2016

NEWARK, Del
. – University of Delaware Director of Intercollegiate Athletics & Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak announced Monday the hiring of Pablo Montana as the head coach of the men’s tennis program, effective immediately.
Montana joins the Blue Hens after spending the past 14 seasons as the women’s tennis head coach at California University of Pennsylvania, where he built one of the nation’s elite NCAA Division II programs.
"We are excited to have Pablo join the University of Delaware Athletics family," Rawak commented. “He built an outstanding program at California (Pa.) that has had sustainable success – both on the court and in the classroom. We are incredibly confident and excited for him to bring that winning formula to Delaware. "
A two-time ITA National Coach of the Year, five-time ITA Regional Coach of the Year and eight-time PSAC West Coach of the Year, Montana was the winningest coach in program history with an outstanding record of 276-83 (.769) from 2002-2016. Cal U posted 12 straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals seven times in eight seasons from 2007-14.
“I want to thank Chrissi Rawak and Jenn Judy for giving me this opportunity as I am honored to be leading the men’s tennis program here at Delaware,” exclaimed Montana. “My family and I are thrilled to be joining the Blue Hens family and I love the excitement and energy that is present within this University. My vision for the program is to create a culture that is used to competing in the final days of a season. I have experienced competing in the final days as a player and as a coach, and I want my players here at Delaware to experience the same.”
Montana led the Vulcans to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship in each of the last 10 seasons and mentored eight different ITA All-Americans in the last nine years.
In addition to the success on the court, Montana has guided the program into a premier program in the classroom. In each of the last 10 years, the Vulcans have earned ITA All-Academic honors with 39 players receiving ITA Scholar-Athlete status. Cal U has also featured a CoSIDA Academic All-District® selection four times in the last five years, highlighted by Franziska Steinhardt becoming the first Academic All-American in program history.
A two-time All-American at Tennessee from 1993-96, Montana was also a three-time All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) selection, earning first team honors in both singles and doubles play in 1996. Montana and doubles partner Chris Mahony were ranked No. 4 in the country at the end of his junior year, posting 23 victories. The pair rank second in Volunteers’ history with 75 career doubles wins.
Montana also has coaching experience with the United States Tennis Association and Vanderbilt University.
A native of Miami, Montana completed his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Regents (N.Y.) in 1998 before he earned his master’s degree from Cal U in 2004.
Montana is just the fifth coach in the past 66 years of Blue Hens men’s tennis and the 14th coach overall in the 100-year-plus history of the program. He replaces Bruce Myers, who stepped down from the position in August 2016.

UBJECT: Devils’ Hot Shooting Hands Wilmington Men’s Basketball 91-80 CACC Loss

DATE: December 6, 2016
djl

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Five players score double digits but the Wilmington University men’s basketball team can’t overcome a slow start and the hot shooting of USciences, 91-80, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss on Tuesday night inside Bobby Morgan Arena.

The Wildcats (5-4, 1-1 CACC) hit 13 three-pointers in the game, but the Devils (2-9, 1-3 CACC) shot 57.9 percent from the floor for the game, including a 21-of-30 performance in the first half, for the victory. A late game comeback had the Wildcats in the contest in the final minutes, but the first half deficit was too much to overcome.

The first half was the Will Gregorits show for the Devils, as he claimed a double-double in the first 20 minutes. He finished the first half with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting, hitting his lone three pointer and all three of his free throws. He also secured 10 rebounds, five of which came off the offensive glass.

USciences’ lead ballooned to as large as 20 points in the first half at 43-23. The home team went into the halftime break leading 51-35.

The three-pointers started to fall for the Wildcats in the second half, as they began to climb back into the contest. The Wildcats held the Devils to nine points in the first eight minutes of the second half, getting to within 60-49 with less than 12 minutes to play.

Back-to-back layups from Nick Richards and Brian Adkins had the Wildcats to within single digits before an Adkins three-points brought the Wildcats all the way back to within 67-62 with 9:03 showing on the clock.

But for every punch the Wildcats threw at the Devils in the second half, the Devils had a retaliation. Drew Johnson hit a three-pointer to get the Wildcats to within 72-65, but the Devils bounced right back with a three of their own to regain a 10-point lead. Adkins hit another three-pointer with 4:49 to play to close the gap to seven points once again, but the Devils answered again with a three of their own for the 10-point lead once more.

Tyaire Ponzo-Meek laid one home before Richards converted an old fashioned three-point play to get the game to within 78-73 with 3:20 left, but once again the Devils fought back with a 7-0 spurt to put the game away.

The Wildcats hit eight three-points in the second half, finishing 13-of-29 from deep for the game. They also shot 42.4 percent from the floor, but couldn’t find a way to stop the Devils.

Richards led the Wildcats with 17 points while Johnson and Omari Dill-Pettiford added 13 points each. Ponzo-Meek finished with 10 points while Adkins came off the bench to hit four three-pointers and score 14 points.

The Wildcats will look to get back into the win column on Saturday when they travel to CACC South Division foe Georgian Court for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.

Goldey-Beacom cranked up the offense and defense in the second half to come back strong for a 78-69 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Chestnut Hill at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) scored six points in that spurt and freshman Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) added four.

The Griffins (5-2, 2-1) closed to 69-65 with 2:44 left on Caity Kuhnen’s layup, but the Lightning scored the next seven points for a 76-65 lead with 19 seconds left for their third straight win. Sophomore Tanner Turner-Rush scored four points in the run.

SUBJECT: LaShyra Williams Secures Double-Double for Wilmington Women’s Basketball but USciences Prevails, 72-64

DATE: December 6, 2016

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The hot shooting of the University of the Sciences in the second quarter carried the Devils to a 72-64 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Wilmington University women’s basketball team on Tuesday night inside Bobby Morgan Arena.

The Wildcats (3-6, 1-1 CACC) bookended the game with outstanding quarters, grabbing a 19-14 lead after the first quarter and ending the game with a 21-11 fourth quarter against the Devils (8-2, 3-1 CACC).

But it was the middle quarters that hurt the Wildcats the most, as the Devils came out on fire to take the second quarter, 27-9, and the third quarter, 20-15.

Ebonee Dixon converted a layup to start the second quarter and give the Wildcats a 21-14 lead. But the Devils went on an 11-2 run to take a 25-23 lead with 5:50 to play in the half. USciences’ Jordan Vitelli then went 4-for-4 from three-point territory the rest of the quarter, including three-straight shots to spark an 11-0 Devils run to end the quarter and take a 41-28 advantage into the locker room.

Vitelli continued her hot shooting in the third quarter, helping the Devils to as large as a 20-point lead with two more three-pointers in the frame. The Devils led by as many as 57-37 with 2:08 left in the third.

The fourth quarter started slowly for the Wildcats, but they scored nine of the first 10 points to climb to within 63-52 with 4:38 to play. An old fashioned three-point play by LaShyra Williams brought the Wildcats to within 71-62 before a Jasmine Lee runner had the visitors to as close as eight points. But it was too little too late as the Wildcats’ comeback ran out of time.

Williams secured a her second double-double of the season for the Wildcats, scoring 13 points while securing a game-high 11 rebounds and dishing out five assists. Macy Robinson also scored 13 points for the Wildcats while Lee came off the bench to score 11 points.

The Devils hit 10 three-pointers in the game, shooting 43.1 percent from the field as a team. The Wildcats shot 5-of-12 from deep, but only hit 38.2 percent from the floor for the game.

The Wildcats remain in CACC play for their next contest, as they head to South Division rival Georgian Court on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. tip.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Soccer Trio Earns NSCAA Regional All-America Status
DATE: December 6, 2016
KANSAS CITY, Mo.
– The University of Delaware had three players named Tuesday as NSCAA NCAA Division I All-Midwest Region honorees in seniors Guillermo Delgado (Tres Cantos, Spain/Jose Luis Sampedro) and Thomas de Villardi (Vincennes, France/Lycee Notre-dame Guingamp) and graduate student Ben Sampson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury).
"This is a great compliment for three of our finest ambassadors to end their careers with,” commented Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. “They have all enjoyed strong academic and soccer careers as Blue Hens. They have much to be proud of in the company they keep with these awards."
Delgado garnered First Team All-Region accolades for the fourth straight season, becoming the program’s first-ever four-time First Team selection. The forward joins George Caruso as Delaware’s only four-time All-Region honorees as Caruso was a First Team (1977, 1978), Second Team (1975) and Honorable Mention (1976) pick.
The 2016 CAA Player of the Year, Delgado is the nation’s active career leader in points (117) and goals (49) and is currently seventh nationally with 1.68 points per game and 14th with 12 goals. His 32 points this season is good for sixth in UD single-season history while his eight assists tied for fourth and 12 goals tied for eighth. One of the most decorated student-athletes in University of Delaware history, Delgado finished his four-year career in a Blue Hens uniform as the school’s all-time leader in five statistical categories: points, goals, assists (19), game-winning goals (17) and shots (282). He is now eligible for NSCAA All-America honors, which will be announced this Friday.
De Villardi, an All-Midwest Region Third Team selection last season, wrapped his career in a Blue Hens uniform as a two-time All-CAA First Team honoree after transferring to the University of Delaware following his sophomore campaign. The midfielder registered eight points on two goals and three assists for the Hens.
Sampson, a two-time team captain, remained a mainstay on the pitch for the Blue Hens and started 83 of 84 games played for UD while rarely seeing less than 90 minutes played in a contest. The CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year and a Senior CLASS Award candidate, the defender garnered 10 goals and four assists for 24 points during his career.
This season’s squad featured the most All-Region honorees since the 2013 team had four selections.

SUBJECT: Delaware Women’s Basketball Uses Strong Defense to Post 47-45 Victory Over Loyola
DATE:  December 7, 2016
BALTIMORE, Md
. -- When the defense is working, teams will always find ways to win games.

The University of Delaware women’s basketball squad did just that Wednesday night as the Blue Hens shot just 40 percent from the field and committed 17 turnovers but had enough grit on defense to pull out a hard-fought 47-45 non-league victory over Loyola at Reitz Arena.

Delaware (6-3) pulled ahead for good with 2:12 left in the final quarter and Nicole Enabosi knocked down three clutch free throws in the final 14 seconds to lead the Blue Hens to the win over the Greyhounds (3-5).

Blue Hen senior guard Erika Brown scored seven of her team-high 15 points in the first quarter and dished our four assists, Sadé Chatman added nine points and a game-high nine rebounds, and Enabosi contributed eight points and seven rebounds to lead the way.

“It’s all about winning and the bottom line is that we did that tonight,” said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, who moved one step closer to the 400-win milestone with her 398th victory with the Blue Hens. “Our offense has been struggling, but our defense has been solid and we found a way to win tonight.”

Delaware held Loyola to just 38.2 percent shooting (21 of 55) from the field and forced 13 turnovers. The Greyhounds, who advanced to the Patriot League championship game a year ago, lost for the third time in the last four games. Guard Bri Betz-White was the only Loyola scorer to reach double figures as she netted eight of her team-high 15 points in the final stanza.

The Blue Hens jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the opening quarter and went ahead 14-10 in the opening quarter but Loyola recovered and outscored the Hens 12-5 in the second stanzas to take a 22-19 lead at the break. The Greyhounds went on a 10-2 run over the first seven minutes of the third stanza to take control but the Hens battled back with a 6-0 run late to take a 31-30 lead.

White scored three straight baskets to open the final stanza and give Loyola a 36-35 lead, but a layup by Brown and a conventional three-point play by Chatman gave Delaware a 40-36 advantage with 5:30 left. Loyola came back to knot the score again at 40-40 with 2:40 left.

Delaware freshman guard Bailey Kargo, who came off the bench for the first time this season, came up big moments later as her floating layup with 2:12 left - her only basket of the game - put the Hens up for good at 42-40. Brown followed with a jumper less than a minute later, Enabosi hit her clutch free throws, and the Hens came up with some big stops on defensive down the stretch to leave the arena happy.

“It was a little hectic (there at the end),” said Brown, who reached double figures in points for the sixth time in the last seven games. “As a senior, my teammates were looking for me at the end. We came together and had some good defensive stops. Our defense is really helping us grind out wins.”

“Overall, our defense is fine, we just have to pick it up on offense,” said Martin, whose team returns to action Sunday to host another Patriot League contender Army West Point (7-1). “We just have to keep working on ball movement, but we will figure it out. But winning is the name of the game.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Delaware freshman guard Abby Gonzales got her first career start at point guard in place of Kargo
• The Hens are now 13-1 all-time vs. Loyola with 12 straight wins. The teams met for the first time since 2004-05
• The game was Delaware’s last road contest until Jan. 6 when Delaware travels to UNCW
• Enabosi, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week, pulled 7+ rebounds for the sixth time this season
• Delaware committed just eight fouls the entire game with Loyola going just 0 for 1 from the foul line

DANBURY, Conn
. -- University of Delaware junior linebacker Charles Bell, who led the Blue Hens in tackles for the second straight season this past fall, has been named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-East team, the ECAC announced Thursday.
Bell, a business management major from Conestoga, Pa. (Penn Manor High School), was one of three linebackers selected to the first team from among the top players in the Colonial Athletic Association, Ivy League, Northeast Conference, and Patriot League. The teams were selected by ECAC-member coaches and sports information directors.

He recorded 10 or stops four times and had a career-high 13 tackles each vs. Maine, Towson, and Villanova. He also had 11 tackles, 3.5 for loss, and intercepted a pass vs. Stony Brook.

He is the kind of player you want to have on your team.”

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Soccer Star Guillermo Delgado Caps Incredible Career with Record Fourth All-American Citation
DATE:  December 9, 2016
KANSAS CITY, Mo.
-- Four seasons, four All-American awards. It couldn’t have gotten any better for University of Delaware men’s soccer star Guillermo Delgado.
Delgado, a Tres Cantos, Spain (Jose Luis Sampedro) native who set nearly every scoring record in school history and led the squad to two NCAA Tournament appearances over the last four years, was honored yet again Friday as he was named a third team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
He was among 36 NCAA Division I student-athletes throughout the country selected to the three teams and was the only Colonial Athletic Association player honored. He also was the only member of the three teams to earn All-American honors all four years.
Delgado becomes the first male athlete in University of Delaware athletics history to earn All-American honors all four years of his career and is one of only two in UD history to accomplish the feat, joining women’s basketball standout and Olympic gold medalist Elena Delle Donne who was a four-time All-American in 2009-13.
“I am extremely excited about this award,” said Delgado, a health and physical education major at Delaware. “Receiving this honor for the fourth year solidifies my career accomplishments as a college soccer player. I could not have achieved this without my teammates and coaches and for that I am extremely thankful.”
The 2016 CAA Player of the Year, Delgado is the nation’s active career leader in points (117 - 11 more than No. 2) and goals (49 - 7 more than No. 2) and is currently ranked seventh nationally with 1.68 points per game and 14th with 12 goals. His 32 points this season is good for sixth place in UD single-season history while his eight assists is tied for fourth and his 12 goals are tied for eighth place.
One of the most decorated student-athletes in University of Delaware history, Delgado finished his four-year career in a Blue Hens uniform as the school’s all-time leader in five statistical categories: points, goals, assists (19), game-winning goals (17), and shots (282).
During his career, he led the Blue Hens to an overall record of 49-26-7, including a 12-8-1 mark in 2016 when Delaware captured the CAA Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament before falling to Providence by a 2-0 score in the first round. Delgado also led the Hens to three straight CAA Tournament runner-up finishes in 2013-15 and an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
“We see the departure of a special senior class and a special player,” said Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. “Guillermo moves into a special class of player with the tremendous consistency he exhibited over his career. Guillermo will be the first to share this award with his graduating peers who have had a huge part in making this accomplishment happen. They have made a case for being the best-ever graduating UD class for our program and this award is in part, a celebration of that.”
Earlier this month Delgado garnered first team all-region accolades for the fourth straight season, becoming the program’s first-ever four-time first team selection. The forward joins George Caruso as Delaware’s only four-time all-region honorees as Caruso was a first team (1977, 1978), second team (1975) and honorable mention (1976) pick.

NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware community came out in full force Friday night to pay tribute to their national champions!
A crowd of nearly 700 fans and supporters filled the floor of the Bob Carpenter Center and cheered on the history-making Blue Hen field hockey squad as they celebrated their first national championship won last month with a thrilling 3-2 victory over North Carolina in Norfolk, Va.
The night was highlighted by presentations from Delaware President Dr. Dennis Assanis, Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak, head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof, and student-athletes Marjelle Scheffers and Maura Zarkoski as they celebrated the great accomplishments of the 2016 season and thanked the fans for their support throughout the year.
Delaware completed a storybook season that saw the team post a 23-2 record, capture its fourth straight Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title, and cruise by No. 9 ranked Louisville, top-ranked Duke, No. 14 Princeton, and No. 4 North Carolina in the postseason to capture the national title, the first for a UD field hockey team and the ninth in UD Athletics history.
“Awesome, unbelievable, amazing,” said an enthusiastic Assanis as he addressed the team and the crowd. “I can’t tell you how proud I am to cherish this moment with you tonight. I am so proud to be a Blue Hen today. It’s been an amazing week and we saved the best for last. We are a community of winners on and off the field.”
Following performances by the University of Delaware cheerleaders and dance team, the UD field hockey made their way on to the stage and were introduced one-by-one followed video highlighted the team’s championship run. The celebration also included a video of van de Kerkhof’s congratulatory phone call from Vice President Joe Biden a few days after the title game.
“Thank you for sharing the accomplishments of this great team and for all of your support,” van de Kerkhof later told the BCC gathering. “We wanted to dream big and work hard towards those dreams. Every game we got better and that was our focus. We had to fight every step of the way and we had to play big time names. But we took care of business and won them one game at a time. Together we have done something amazing.”
After the presentations, the UD Pep Band played the Delaware Fight Song followed by a recording of We Are the Champions by Queen. Then the confetti rained down from the rafters to complete a festive evening.
“This is hard to put into words,” said Delaware senior co-captain Meghan Winesett, who scored a goal in the national championship game. “Every one of our four conference championships was special and unique. A national championship was not our original goal, but it became one. There is nothing more that this senior class could have accomplished. Tonight was amazing, walking out and seeing so many familiar faces but a lot of new faces, too. We have so many people supporting us and cheering for us.”

Lexi Bruno and Britani Bryson Buoy Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball to Fifth Straight Win, 77-65 Over Shepherd

The dynamic duo of juniors Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) and Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) combined for 48 points and Goldey-Beacom pulled away in the fourth quarter for its fifth straight victory, 77-65 over Shepherd at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning (6-5) looked like they were in impeccable shape with 2:49 left in the third quarter when Bruno hit a layup, giving her squad a 52-43 lead. But the Rams scored the next nine points for a tie game late in the period, thanks to Morgan Arden and Sammy Bane each hitting 3-pointers.

The game was still tied, 57-57, with six minutes left before GBC took over. Bruno again was the catalyst, taking matters in her own hands with two 3-pointers to start a 14-3 run spanning 3 1/2 minutes that gave her squad a 71-60 lead with 2:35 remaining.

The fourth quarter was the difference as the Lightning gained a 23-13 edge on the scoreboard by shooting 57 percent (8-of-14) from the floor and limiting the Rams to only 29 percent (5-of-14). Bruno almost had as many points as Shepherd in the period, netting 11 with a pair of 3-pointers.

Bruno, the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week, ended with 28 points – two short of her career high – on 10-of-18 shooting to go with six assists and three 3-pointers over 40 minutes. She moved into seventh place in school history with 1,189 career points and sixth with 424 field goals.

Bryson finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds, completing her fifth double-double of the year and third straight at halftime with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She moves into a tie for seventh in school history with 613 career rebounds.

Nina Bartlette (Winthrop, MA), the reigning CACC Rookie of the Week, scored nine points and sophomore Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) added eight for GBC, which shot 46 percent (31-of-67) from the floor.

Liz Myers had 14 points and nine rebounds, Arden netted 13 points and Cara Mason contributed 10 for the Rams (3-6), who shot 44 percent (25-of-57) from the field but were beset by 21 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom is home Monday against New Haven, starting at 6:00 pm. The men play at 8:00 pm vs. Pace.

Dover, Del. (Dec. 10, 2016) --- Kavon Waller tied a school-record with eight three-point field goals on nine attempts to lead Delaware State to a 92-69 win over Keystone in Memorial Hall this afternoon.

Waller nailed his first eight three-point shots to tie the team record first set by Marty Bailey during a MEAC Tournament contest on Mar. 7, 2000. The junior forward had a chance to break the record, but missed his final three-point attempt with 12 seconds remaining in the game.

Waller scored a career-high 26 points on 9-for-11 shooting from the field in the contest.

Waller’s performance overshadowed standout games by Hornet sophomores DeVaughn Mallory and Devon Morgan.

Mallory recorded his first career double-double, scoring a personal-best 18 points on 9-for-13 shooting and grabbing 13 rebounds, also a career-high.

Morgan also posted his first collegiate double-double, scoring 16 points, highlighted by four three-point field goals, and dishing out a career-high 10 assists.

Waller, Mallory and Morgan combined for 60 of the Hornets’ 92 points. Ten of the 12 players who appeared for DSU scored in the game.

The Hornets set a team record with 15 three-pointers on 30 attempts in the game, smashing the previous record of 14, occurring on three occasions, the last on Feb. 14, 2015.

Delaware State was tops in the MEAC with a .376 three-point percentage entering the game. The Hornets improved to .392 (91-for-232) following today’s performance.

DSU led 37-30 at the break, but outscored Keystone 55-39 in the second half. DSU was 22-for-38 from the field (57.9%), including 9-of-17 from three-point range (52.9%) in the final 20 minutes.

Delaware State also had season highs in rebounds (46) and assists (24) in today’s contest.

Mark Gilliam led three Keystone players in double-figures with 16 points, while Khyle Diaz came off the bench to score 15 for the Giants.

The Hornets snapped a three-game slide to improve to 3-8 this season. Division III Keystone fell to 2-4.

STINGERS… Waller was tops in the MEAC in three-point percentage at .511 entering the game. He’s now 32-for-56 from beyond the arc for a .571 mark this season. His overall shooting percentage had risen to a team-best .541 (46-85) following today’s performance.

… Mallory raised his field goal percentage to .540 this season. He was fifth in the MEAC in shooting entering today’s contest.

… Morgan’s 10 assists tied for the most by a DSU player since Jay Threatt tallied 11 against North Carolina State on Dec. 22, 2010.

… Redshirt sophomore Jamelle Christian game off the bench to score five points and dish out four assists in 17 minutes, each a career-high, for the Hornets.

… Delaware State will be off for final exams next week before returning to action at Binghamton (N.Y.) on Dec. 17. Game time is 2 p.m.

SUBJECT: Yale Uses Three-Point Barrage To Post 81-63 Victory Over University of Delaware Men's Basketball

DATE: December 11, 2016

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Yale knocked down 13 three-pointers and shot 52 percent from the field as the Bulldogs pulled away in the second half to post an 81-63 men's basketball victory over the University of Delaware Sunday afternoon at John J. Lee Amphitheater.
The Bulldogs, who improved to 5-4 on the year while winning their third in a row, put four players in double figures as Alex Copeland scored 17 points while Blake Reynolds added 16 including four three-pointers. Yale hit 28 of 54 (51.9%) shots from the floor, including 13 of 28 from behind the arc against a Delaware squad that entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in three-point defense.
Blue Hen freshman guard Ryan Daly led all scorers with a season-high 20 points, including a 5 of 9 performance from behind the arc, and also grabbed a season-high nine rebounds. Chivarsky Corbett reached double figures for the fourth straight game with 10 points, while Eric Carter narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Delaware shot a respectable 44.6 percent from the field and went 9 of 21 from long distance, but hurt itself by hitting just 4 of 12 free throws. The Blue Hens were also out-rebounded for just the second time this year as Yale held a 37-30 edge on the boards.
“I tip my hat to Yale, they’re a good team and they know how to win,” Blue Hen head coach Martin Ingelsby said. “We played well in spurts, but have to be more consistent with our effort. They did a great job of knocking down shots; we defended well for 20 or 21 seconds, but they hit a bunch of big three-pointers late in the shot clock.”
Daly hit three consecutive three-pointers early in the first half, while a Darian Bryant triple gave UD a 21-15 lead with 11:09 to play in the opening period. However Yale exploded for a 23-5 run, going up 38-26 on a Reynolds three-pointer with 2:29 on the clock.
It was still a 12 point-game at the two-minute mark but after Cazmon Hayes hit a jumper, Anthony Mosley added two free throws and then swished a halfcourt shot just before the buzzer to bring Delaware within 41-36 at the break.
But Yale scored the first eight points of the second half, including two straight triples by Reynolds, to go up 49-36 and force a Delaware timeout with 17 minutes left.
UD answered with seven in a row pull within six with 14:06 left, and it was still just a seven-point game when Skye Johnson converted a jumphook, but the Bulldogs answered with a 13-2 spurt to go in front 67-49 with 6:27 to play.
The Blue Hens countered with eight straight points, the final six on consecutive three-pointers by Daly, to get within 10 with 4:53 to play, but Yale responded with a 7-0 run to put the game away.
Delaware returns to action on Saturday when the Blue Hens take on Seton Hall at 6 p.m. in the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
Game Notes:
• Yale won its 17th straight home game, the eighth longest streak in Division I
• Carter reached double figure rebounds for the fourth time on the year

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Can’t Overcome Miscues, Fall to Army West Point 61-47 in Women’s Basketball

DATE:  December 11, 2016

NEWARK, Del. -- Despite jumping to a quick start in opening minutes, the University of Delaware women’s basketball could not overcome a season-high 20 turnovers and 32 percent shooting from the field in dropping a 61-47 decision to Army West Point Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Army (8-2), which won for the seventh time in the last eight games, scored 21 points off turnovers and collected 36 points in the paint to hand the Blue Hens the loss in the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women’s basketball. The Hens hit just 17 of 53 shots from the field for the game but did outrebound the Black Knights 36-33.

Delaware junior forward Sadé Chatman led the Hens with 14 points and six rebounds and sophomore forward Nicole Enabosi posted her third double-double in the last four games with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds but Delaware (6-4) could not overcome the miscues and poor shooting.

Madison Hovren recorded her sixth straight double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds for Army West Point while Destinee Morris came off the bench to score 10 points and Aliyah Murray chipped in with eight points and 11 rebounds.

“You have to give credit to Army, they played well,” said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. “They are an NCAA calibre team and they pressed us really well. They have a lot of strong veteran players and have great leadership. They come at you really hard and we have some guards who panicked at times. We have to get better at handling pressure and keeping our composure. You can’t give the ball away 20 times and expect to win, I don’t care who the opponent is. That was our Achilles heal today.”

Delaware came out strong in the opening minutes as senior forward Hannah Jardine knocked down consecutive three-pointers in a span of 32 seconds and Enabosi hit a pair of free throws for an 8-2 lead and the Hens added a three-point play by Chatman to go up 13-7 with 5:20 left in the opening stanza. But Army tore off on a 17-0 run to end the stanza and take a 23-13 lead.

The Hens settled down and outscored the Black Knights in the second quarter but went into the break trailing 37-28. Army continued to take control in the second half as the Black Knights scored the first seven points of the third quarter to increase the lead to 44-28. Delaware never got closer than 14 points the rest of the day.

Delaware will now take nine days off for exams and will return to action on Dec. 21 at home against Hartford at the Bob Carpenter Center.

“We have the break coming up so we will work on taking care of the ball and running our offense,” said Martin, who will go for career win 399 against Hartford. “Hopefully we will have a better result next time out.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Delaware lost for just the second time in six home games this season
• The 20 turnovers were the most committed by Delaware since turning the ball over 21 times vs. Robert Morris last Dec. 29, 2015
• Enabosi now has four double-doubles this season and 10 in 41 career games
• Jardine went 2 for 4 on three-pointers and is now shooting 26 of 52 (.500) from three-point range this season

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Chestnut Hill came out of the gates hitting shot after shot and never let up, going on to defeat the Wilmington University women’s basketball team, 102-67, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Thursday night inside Sorgenti Arena.

Over half of the Griffins’ (6-4, 3-2 CACC) points came from either beyond the three-point arc or the foul line, as the home team shot 54.4 percent from the field for the game. They knocked down 13 three-pointers, going 13-of-24 from deep for the game.

The hot shooting started early for the Griffins, as they shot 12-of-18 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc in the first quarter. The Wildcats (4-7, 2-2 CACC) fell behind, 30-19, after the first quarter. The Griffins led wire-to-wire, never allowing the Wildcats to gain a lead.

NEWARK, Del. - - A fierce fourth quarter comeback fell just short for the Wilmington University women’s basketball team as crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom took a 78-70 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference showdown at the WU Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Wildcats (4-8, 2-3 CACC) outscored the Lightning (9-5, 5-1 CACC) by eight points in the fourth quarter, closing to as few as four points but couldn’t get over the hump as the Lightning held on down the stretch. The Lightning opened the gap with a productive third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats, 26-18, to take a 62-46 lead into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter started with an 8-0 spurt for the Wildcats, as Emma Matthews hit a three-pointer to start the final 10-minute stanza. Jamiere Jeffries laid one home and Macy Robinson hit an ensuing three-pointer to force the Lightning into an early timeout, bringing the Wildcats to within 62-54 with 8:16 left.

Jasmine Lee converted a layup and Robinson came up with a steal and fastbreak layup on the next possession to get the Wildcats to within 65-58. Lee finished off the 6-0 run with another layup, getting the Wildcats to as few as 65-60 with 4:38 to play.

LaShyra Williams brought the Wildcats to their thinnest margin, 67-63, with 1:55 showing on the game clock by converting a tough layup while getting fouled and hitting the foul shot for the three-point play.

But the Lightning had an answer for each Wildcat punch, as the visitors extended the lead back out to 70-63 with 1:33 left. Ebonee Dixon put in a layup for a five-point deficit and Williams had another layup to bring the score back to within five once again, but there was only 21 seconds left. The Lightning hit all four of their foul shots down the stretch to secure the victory.

The Lightning were able to withstand the fourth quarter comeback by getting out to a 21-16 lead after the first quarter, and went into the halftime break with a 36-28 advantage. The 26-18 third quarter push was the difference in the game for the Lightning.

Williams secured her third double-double of the season with team highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds. She also dished out five assists, collected two blocks, and had one steal. Robinson ended with 13 points, hitting three three-pointers in the game. Dixon came off the bench to shoot 5-of-7 from the floor for 10 points while Karena Purnell added eight points and 10 rebounds off the bench as well.

The Wildcats held the advantage in the bulk of the statistical categories, including shooting (36.8% to 30.9%), three-point shooting (31.3% to 28.0%), points in the paint (36-22), but the Lightning hit 29 free throws as compared to the Wildcats’ 15.

The Wildcats begin their NCAA Division II mandatory holiday break but return to action in 10 days on Wednesday, December 28. The Wildcats head to Kutztown for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.

Goldey-Beacom Captures Eighth Straight With 78-70 Triumph at Wilmington (DE)

Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) poured in 27 points and fellow junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA/Bethel) recorded her latest double-double to help Goldey-Beacom notch its eighth straight win, 78-70 over Wilmington (DE) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play in Newark, DE.

GBC had control most of the way and separated itself in the third quarter with an 18-6 run over four minutes, grabbing a 62-45 lead late in the period. Sophomore Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) continued her impeccable play with seven points in that span and Bruno added six.

The Wildcats would not go away, scoring six straight points midway through the fourth to close to 65-60 with 4:38 remaining. Jasmine Lee netted four points during that time.

Freshman Nina Bartlette (Winthrop, MA) canned two free throws for the Lightning before Lashyra Williams made an old-fashioned three-point play, moving the Wildcats within 67-63 with 1:55 to play.

Bruno then calmed everyone’s nerves by making a layup with 1:41 to go for a 69-63 margin. Freshman Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) then went 1-for-2 from the line with 93 seconds left for a seven-point game and extend Goldey-Beacom’s longest run since winning nine in a row during the 2012-13 season.

Two days after netting a career-best 38 points against Shippensburg, Bruno came back by going 10-for-12 from the line to go with six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Bryson hauled in 19 rebounds to fall two short of her personal best and scored 13 points for her seventh double-double this season and fifth in the last six games.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Six-Game Winning Streak Snapped With 85-76 Loss at Wilmington (DE)

Junior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) poured in a season-best 27 points and did everything to try extending Goldey-Beacom’s six-game winning streak, but the run ended with an 85-76 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at Wilmington (DE) in Newark, DE.

Down 69-54 with 9:36 left, the Lightning scored eight straight points to move within 69-62 with 6:50 to play. Senior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) did his part in the comeback by canning a pair of 3-pointers.

Thompson’s layup with 2:11 remaining brought GBC within 73-67, but a technical foul took the air out of the visiting team. Tyaire Ponzo-Meek made both free throws for an eight-point game.

After senior Nick Lawson (Woodbury, NJ) hit once from the line for the Lightning, Ponzo-Meek hit twice more from the stripe for a 77-68 margin with 1:59 left and snapped the visitors three-game road winning streak in the series.

Thompson shot 9-of-12 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the line to go with eight rebounds, but the Lightning (7-3, 3-2 CACC) only hit 40 percent (27-of-68) from the field. Senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) and sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) netted 14 apiece with Ridgeway-Higgs adding 10.

Omari Dill-Pettiford scored 21 points, Ponzo-Meek netted 20, Drew Johnson poured in 13 with Miles Gillette and Masner Beauplan adding 10 apiece for the Wildcats (8-5, 4-1), who shot 53 percent (29-of-55) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom hits the road New Year’s Eve to battle Millersville for the second time this season. The Lightning opened the campaign with a 74-69 home triumph over the Marauders.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Edges Past Marist, Stays Unbeaten at Home with 59-56 Men’s Basketball Victory
DATE:  December 20, 2016
NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware men’s basketball squad gutted out another home victory Wednesday night as senior Devonne Pinkard hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 42 seconds left and freshman Ryan Daly and senior Cazmon Hayes combined to knock down four clutch free throws in the closing seconds as the Blue Hens remained unbeaten at the Bob Carpenter Center with a 59-56 victory over Marist.

Delaware (6-5), which snapped a two-game losing streak, is now 4-0 at home this season for the first time since the 2011-12 season. The Hens got a balanced effort as junior Anthony Mosley scored 13 points and pulled a season-high eight rebounds, Pinkard finished with 11 points, and Hayes and Daly each chipped in with 10 point with Daly pulling eight rebounds. Daly reached double figures for the third straight game.

The Hens posted a hard-fought win over the Red Foxes for the second straight season after recording a comeback 70-69 victory last December in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Marist lost for the first time in three trips to The Bob.

“I’m really proud of our guys because we practice late-game situations every day, and we had to execute down the stretch to win that game,” said Delaware head coach Martin Ingelsby. “What a moment for Devonne (Pinkard). We all know he’s been struggling with his three-point shot. We ran a stagger screen for him and he really stepped up and hit a big shot. I’m excited for our group, I think this is something to build on as we look forward to the CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) season, because once you get into league play, it’s all one or two-possession games. It was not a pretty basketball game tonight, but to be able to hold them to 56 points is something I’m really proud of.”

Marist (4-8), which suffered its fourth straight loss, got a big effort from guard Brian Parker who scored 14 points, pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, and dished out four assists. Ryan Funk added 14 points, including four three-pointers, and Khallid Hart, returning to his hometown, contributed 10 points. Parker recorded his second double-double of the season while Funk registered his sixth straight game in double figures scoring.

The Blue Hens used an early 7-0 run in the first half on the way to a 31-23 lead at the break and stayed in front for the first 12 minutes of the second half before Marist got back into the game with a 7-0 run of its own to tie the score at 48-48 with 8:18 left.

The Red Foxes finally grabbed the lead on a Funk three-pointer with 5:03 left and regained it again on a David Knudsen layup at 53-52 with 1:58 left.

That set the stage for Pinkard, who took an inbounds pass from Mosley in the left corner and put up a three-point shot just before the shot clock expired that hit the bottom of the net to give UD a 55-53 lead with 42 seconds left.

"The play was drawn up for me to come off a screen and I knew there were only four seconds on the shot clock, so I just tried to get a shot up,” said Pinkard, who had hit just 9 of 42 shots (.214) from long range entering the game. “I was pumped up after that last shot since it gave us the lead."

Marist’s Hart and Pinkard then traded free throws and Daly added one from the charity stripe with five seconds left for a 57-54 Blue Hen lead. Hart followed with two free throws for Marist to cut the lead to 57-56 with two seconds left but Hayes was fouled on the inbounds play and calmly sank both free throws to preserve the victory.

SUBJECT: Turnovers Costly to University of Delaware in 67-66 Women's Basketball Loss to Hartford
DATE: December 21, 2016
NEWARK, Del.
– Despite shooting a season-best 50.0 percent from the field, the Blue Hens committed a season-high 21 turnovers en route to a 67-66 loss to Hartford at the Bob Carpenter Center in the final non-conference game of the year.
Delaware, which had four players in double figures, converted on 25 of 50 field goals shot while also going 10-of-11 from the free throw line at a clip of .909.
For the second straight game, turnovers proved to be costly however as Hartford registered 19 points off of UD miscues, including a crucial offensive foul which turned into a three-point play for the Hawks with 14 seconds left on the clock.
Sophomore Nicole Enabosi (at left; Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) led the Hens (6-5) with 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Senior Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) and redshirt junior Sadé Chatman (below right; St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) added 12 points apiece while senior Hannah Jardine (St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada/O’Donel) collected 11 points and six rebounds for Delaware.
Deanna Mayza guided the Hawks (8-4) with 14 points, including the 1,000th of her career, to go along with five assists and three rebounds. Janelle Harrison recorded a double double of 12 points and 13 rebounds.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Tina Martin
“We’re going to keep working and getting better as a team because we need to improve. We got pushed around a lot on the offensive boards. It’s a physical game and you have to be able to push back. Hartford won that battle tonight and in the end they won the game by one point. Defensively, we made some great stops, but then we’d make some costly mistakes on converting the fast break.”
Senior Co-Captain Erika Brown
“Hartford is a well-rounded team. Everyone on their team is good; they don’t necessarily have a superstar. We needed to play well against them and we didn’t. We made costly mistakes and turned the ball over too much.”
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Former America East foes, Hartford snapped a seven-game losing streak to Delaware.
· The Hawks also held a 17-8 advantage in second-chance points.
· The Blue Hens close non-conference play above the .500 mark for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
· Wednesday’s game was the only contest in a 21-day span for the Hens due to final exams and the impending holiday break.
· Abby Gonzales dished out a career-best six assists in 34 minutes played.

SUBJECT: Delaware's Greta Nauck Takes Home Nation’s Top Honor with CWSA Field Hockey Honda Sport Award
DATE: December 23, 2016
NEWARK, Del.
– The stats proved it all season long and now Greta Nauck (Krefeld, Germany/Gymnasium am Moltekeplatz) can officially say she is the nation’s best collegiate field hockey player.
The Blue Hens sophomore was named Thursday for the Honda Sport Award winner for Field Hockey, as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA).
Nauck joins basketball All-American Elena Delle Donne ’13 as the University of Delaware’s lone recipients of the Honda Sport Award, which is presented annually by the CWSA to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics.” Delle Donne won the Honda Sport Award for women’s basketball following her senior season in 2012-13.
With this honor, Nauck becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2017 Honda Cup, which will be presented on a live telecast on the CBS Sports Network on June 26, 2017 from downtown Los Angeles.
Nauck was chosen for the award based on voting by administrators from more than 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
Please see below for comments from Nauck, head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof and CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio.
Nauck led the Blue Hens to the first National Championship in program history while Delaware finished the year with a 19-game winning streak and an overall mark of 23-2.
The NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Region Player of the Year and CAA Player of the Year finished the season first nationally with 3.04 points per game and 1.32 goals per game on a school record 76 points and 33 goals. In just two seasons for Delaware, the midfielder is seventh in program history with 103 career points on 44 goals and 15 assists.
Nauck tallied the game-winning goal in 10 of UD’s 23 victories and came through in the clutch in two huge NCAA Tournament wins. First, she posted the overtime game-winner in a 3-2 victory at No. 1 Duke in the second round of the tournament before registering the National Championship’s game-winning goal with under six minutes to play for the 3-2 win over North Carolina in the title game.
Other nominees for this year’s honor included Paula Heuser (Albany), Welma Luus (Maryland) and Charlotte Veitner (Connecticut). The nominees were chosen by a panel of coaches representing the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
The Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for 41 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.5 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs at the institutions.
Delaware Sophomore Midfielder Greta Nauck
“I am totally speechless. It is a huge honor for me to receive the Honda Sport Award for field hockey and I would like to thank everybody who voted for me. Delaware’s 2016 season was an incredible journey. The hard work, commitment and support of an amazing team allowed me to immensely grow throughout the season - on and off the field. I had 23 teammates that challenged and supported me every day for the last few months, which helped me so much to become the player and person I am today. It is a joy and privilege to work and to play together with a group of close friends, who are eager to always help each other, to grow together and to achieve goals we have set together.
Receiving the Honda Sport Award has never been my personal goal; just through my incredible team it has become possible.
Moreover, the coaching staff with Rolf van de Kerkhof as our head coach has done an unbelievably great job in providing me with the assistance I needed in order to become the best player I can be.
I remember very well the end of my freshman season when Rolf stood with me in front of a banner next to the field hockey and women’s basketball offices that shows the Honda Sport Award winner Elena Delle Donne. He told me that he believes in me and that I would have the potential to win the award as well. Although I appreciated his trust a lot, I did not truly consider my ability of winning the award. To be honored by the CWSA in receiving the Honda Sport award only one year later is extremely meaningful. It shows the successful work relationship between a head coach and his student-athlete.
It is a great pleasure to be part of the University of Delaware, which has become a true family to me. The support we received as a team from all our fans, fellow students and community members during the entire season was absolutely amazing. I feel so much pride to be able to represent my school as a player on the field, as a student in the classroom and as a person in the community.
Upon acceptance of the Honda Sport Award, my name will forever be associated with it. However, I want to emphasize that for me also some other names from the University of Delaware need to be associated with the award as well.”
Delaware Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
“Congratulations Greta Nauck! What a joy it was for me to share with Greta and her family the announcement that she is the 2016 Honda Sport Award winner for field hockey. Even better to see was her initial reaction and more emotions throughout our conversation as it registered she just won the highest individual award in all of NCAA Division I field hockey. A year ago, Greta and I stood in front of the banner in the Bob Carpenter Center that honors Elena Delle Donne and her women’s basketball Honda Award selection and mentioned, “Why not you?” I know it was never a goal for Greta to focus in on this award, which is something that showed me she was a true team player and focused on team-first. Of course I hoped that Elena’s story could provide her with extra motivation and desire to become better throughout the 2016 season.
Greta winning the Honda Sport Award in a way has many similarities with our team winning the National Championship. Both were never the goal or focus, but have become reality as our student-athletes did focus on getting better individually and as a team throughout our season. They allowed the process and our performances to determine the level of our accomplishments and successes.
In a way it is hard for me to describe how I feel about Greta winning the Honda Sport Award as I don’t know where to start because of being so excited, happy and proud of her, this team, our program and our university. Knowing that more than 1,000 NCAA administrators voted Greta to be the recipient of this award confirms what the Blue Hens already knew, but now will be shared with the entire sports community nationwide.
Let me leave you with this: Greta, thank you for being true to yourself and focusing on what is really important in a team sport and in life: to work hard every day in becoming a better student, athlete, leader, teammate and person for yourself and for Delaware field hockey. Also, thank you for representing the University of Delaware the way you have and for sharing the joy with other Blue Hens in dreaming big and working hard to make those dreams come true! Hard work pays off… team work pays off and is more fun as you get to share and celebrate with others!”
CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio
“On behalf of the entire CAA family I congratulate Greta on winning the 2016 Honda Sport Award for field hockey. This has truly been a very special year for the Delaware field hockey program under the leadership of head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. For the year to culminate with Greta winning this award, and for her to be able to celebrate this tremendous individual accomplishment wrapped around the success that her team has already achieved, is a moment that will live forever in the history of Delaware athletics and our conference.
