SUBJECT: Wildcats Draw Close In Second Half but Division I Morgan State Pulls Away Late, 88-73, For WilmU’s First Loss

DATE: November 17, 2016
djl

BALTIMORE, Md. - - A second half comeback ran out of steam for the Wilmington University men’s basketball team as NCAA Division I Morgan State pulled away late to give the Wildcats their first loss of the year, 88-73, on Thursday night at Hill Field House.

Playing the second game of a back-to-back, and their fourth game in six days to start the season, the Wildcats (3-1) got off to a slow start in front of a larger crowd and arena then they are used to playing in. The Bears (1-2) scored the game’s first six points and held a 10-1 lead in the first five minutes of action.

The first half continued to go in favor of the home team, as the Bears used a 6-0 spurt en route to a 14-3 run to turn a 16-10 lead into a 30-13 advantage with six minutes left in the first half. The lead continued to balloon for the Bears, growing as large as 21 points as late as 43-22 with 2:29 left in the opening half. The Wildcats closed the half on an 8-4 run to head into the locker room down 47-30.

The legs started to loosen up for the Wildcats following the halftime break as they started to make their move when trailing 57-42. The run started with a three-pointer from Drew Johnson II, followed by back-to-back layups from Nick Richards and Tyaire Ponzo-Meek. Tajee Almon got out on the break and put home a pass from Ponzo-Meek to cut the deficit to 57-51 with 11:47 to play in regulation.

The Bears widened the margin back out to 62-51 following a timeout, but Richards threw down a dunk to recharge the Wildcats. The Wildcats followed with a steal on the defensive end and a Ponzo-Meek three-pointer to once again bring the visitors to within 62-56 with 9:37 showing on the clock.

But the Bears were able to keep the Wildcats at an arms’ length, scoring the next four points and not allowing the visitors to come any closer for the rest of the game. Johnson laid one home to cut the deficit to 70-62 with 5:17 to play, but the Bears hit two from the foul line, converted a layup, and turned a turnover into a three-pointer to blow the lead back out to 77-62 with 4:14 left.

The Wildcats got to work on the glass, outrebounding the Bears 46-43 for the game, including a 23-12 advantage on the offensive boards. The Wildcats were uncharacteristic in turning the ball over 23 times on Thursday, and getting seven of their shots blocked by the NCAA Division I team. That led to a 25-13 advantage for the Bears on points off turnovers.

Ponzo-Meek led the Wildcats with 23 points and five assists, but needed 18 shots to get his points. He also went 9-of-10 from the foul line in the game. Richards added 15 points for the Wildcats, shooting 5-of-15 for from the floor. Johnson was the final Wildcat in double digits with 11 points, hitting three three-pointers in the game. Almon led the team with 11 rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass.

The Wildcats have nine days off before returning to the court on November 26. The Wildcats will face off against Bloomsburg in another nonconference contest, returning to the WU Athletics Complex for a 3:00 p.m. scheduled tip-off.

A close game most of the way did not swing in Goldey-Beacom’s favor as it was dealt a 62-50 loss by Molloy in Rockville Centre, NY.

Neither team led by more than five points from late in the first quarter until midway through the third. Junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) hit a layup with 6:39 remaining in the third to bring the Lightning with 40-39.

But the Lions then went on an 11-2 run over the next seven minutes to take control, grabbing a 51-41 lead in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. Kathryn Gibson scored six points in that span for Molloy, which despite shooting 3-of-10 from the field in that span limited GBC to only 1-of-12.

The Lightning again played solid defense in holding the Lions to just 28 percent shooting (8-of-29) in the second half, but the visitors only could hit for 19 percent (6-of-32) in that span and were outscored 27-15.

Bryson scored nine of her 13 points in the second half and overall had nine rebounds, junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) recorded 10 points and five assists with promising freshman Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) adding seven points and seven rebounds for the Lightning (1-3).

Ihnacinse Grady poured in 20 points, Shantana Kanhoye netted 11 with Kamala Thompson adding eight and 10 rebounds for Molloy (4-0), which shot 34 percent (22-of-65) overall from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Tuesday at University of the Sciences as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team. The women’s game starts at 6:00 pm, followed by the men’s 8:00 pm contest.

Goldey-Beacom’s Lexi Bruno and Britani Bryson Picked to CACC Women’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll

Yet another award each went in the direction of Goldey-Beacom juniors Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ/Millville) and Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA/Bethel), who each were named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll.

Bruno averaged 15.0 points on 42 percent shooting (10-of-24), 6.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.0 steal over two games with six 3-pointers. She closed Wednesday’s 56-50 victory against Philadelphia U. with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, eight assists, four 3-pointers and two steals over 37 minutes. Bruno also had 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and two blocks Saturday at Molloy.

It was just another honor for the standout guard, who last season was picked first team all-league one year after being tabbed CACC Rookie of the Year and second team all-conference. Bruno is eighth in school history with 1,044 points, second with 312 assists, third with 140 three-pointers, sixth with 126 steals and seventh with 375 field goals.

Bruno is 52nd in the country with 18.8 points per game, 35th with 28 baskets, 38th with 5.5 assists per contest, 44th with 12 three-pointers and first in the league in assists. Bruno last season paced the CACC with 17.0 points and 5.1 assists per contest.

Bryson averaged 10.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks over two games. The all-league forward had eight points and 11 rebounds Wednesday against Philadelphia U. before amassing 13 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks Saturday at Molloy.

She also is looking for more season-ending hardware after being picked third team all-conference a season ago. Bryson is 15th in school history with 717 points, ninth with 536 rebounds and fourth with 76 blocks.

Bryson is 70th in the nation with 9.5 rebounds per game, fourth in the CACC in that category, 28th in the league with 10.3 points per game and 27th with a .378 field goal percentage. Last season, she was one of only four players in the league to average double figures in both points and rebounds.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Tuesday to face undefeated University of the Sciences, beginning at 6:00 pm.

Lafayette, La. (Nov. 21, 2016) --- Delaware State gave Louisiana Lafayette all it could handle, but came up on the short end of an 83-82 score at Blackham Coliseum this evening.

The Hornets (1-2) nailed a season-high 13 three-pointers and held the Ragin’ Cajuns without a field goal for the final 5:49 of the game, but late free throw shooting keyed the Lafayette win.

Devin Morgan led four Delaware State players in double figures with a season-high 23 points. Morgan also tied his career-high with five three-point field goals, extending his streak of consecutive games with at least one three-pointer to 32.

DeAndre Haywood scored 20 points for the third straight game, while Dana Raysor came off the bench to add a season-high 15 points and Kavon Waller contributed 12 points for the Hornets.

Haywood was seven-for-11 from the field, two-of-three on three-point attempts and perfect on two free throws in the contest.

Raysor tied his DSU high with four three-pointers (4-7), while Waller has reached double figures in scoring in each of the Hornets’ four games this season.

La.-Lafayette’s Frank Bartley IV led all players with 25 points, while teammate Bryce Washington recorded a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Waller had 10 points in the first half and the Hornets knocked down six three-pointers, but still trailed 42-36 at the break.

Raysor capped off a 6-0 run with a three-ball to pull the Hornets to within 48-47 with 15:26 left to play.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (2-2) led 63-61 before two free throws by Bartley IV ended a 7-0 run that gave the home team a nine-point advantage with 8:33 remaining.

Bartley added two more free throws to give Lafayette a 77-68 lead with 4:53 left on the second half clock.

The Hornets rallied over the next four-and-a-half minutes, and pulled to within 82-79 on a lay-up by Morgan with 10 seconds to go, but Lafayette’s P.J. Hardy hit one of two foul shots with eight ticks remaining give the hosts a two-possession lead.

Morgan closed out the scoring with his fifth three-pointer of the game with one second left.

Delaware State was 29-for-64 from the field (45.3%), including 13-of-25 from three-point territory (52%). The team record for three-pointers in a game is 14, which has occurred on three occasions.

The Ragin’ Cajuns shot 45.6% from the field (26-for-57) and 40.9% on three-point shots (9-22).

Free throws were a big factor in the contest. Lafayette took 35 shots from the line, hitting 22 (62.9%), while DSU attempted 12 free throws, connecting on 11.

Delaware State won the rebound battle 39-37.

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday at Rice University. Game time is 8 p.m. ET in Houston, Tex.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Soccer Standout Ben Sampson Named CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year for Men’s Soccer
DATE:  November 22, 2016
NEWARK, Del.
-- The nation’s highest academic honor for NCAA men’s soccer now belongs to the University of Delaware’s Ben Sampson.

Sampson, a graduate student and five-year standout for the Blue Hen men’s soccer program, earned first team Academic All-American honors by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Tuesday but received an ever bigger honor by being named that team’s Academic All-American of the Year.

He becomes only the second student-athlete in Delaware history to earn Academic All-American of the Year honors, joining former women’s basketball All-American, current WNBA star, and 2016 Olympic gold medalist Elena Delle Donne, who was honored in consecutive years in 2012 and 2013.

No Colonial Athletic Association school has had more than one student-athlete earn the coveted award and Sampson is the first CAA men’s soccer player to be honored. The current CAA membership has received 31 Academic All-America first team selections in all sports, eight of which have come from men's soccer.

"As one of the highest awards in NCAA Division I men's soccer and as the first male from UD to win this award, I'm deeply honored to be selected,” said Sampson. “I have been fortunate to be part of a culture on the UD men's soccer team that focuses on excellence on the soccer field and even more importantly in the classroom. Furthermore, it is also a huge testament to the academic quality of this athletics department and the University of Delaware as a whole."

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must carry a 3.3 or better GPA, be a starter or key reserve and have at least sophomore standing. Nominations and selections are made by collegiate sports information directors. The Academic All-American of the Year is selected from among the 11 players that make up the Academic All-American first team. In addition to Sampson, Kathryn Sloan of Louisiana Tech was named the Academic All-American of the Year for women’s soccer.

“Each year at season’s onset we challenge our teams to find a ‘first’ for that given year,” commented Blue Hens head coach Ian Hennessy, who earned his doctorate in molecular biology from Columbia University in 2001. “Past lists include things like, first to win the CAA, first team in history to host an NCAA game, etc. All are achievements that can’t ever be achieved again because they are ‘firsts.’ Ben’s achievement fits beautifully into the architecture of this philosophy. He is the first and sole recipient of arguably the most coveted award in all of college soccer and he did it as a Fightin’ Blue Hen. I speak on behalf of our athletic department when I say congratulations to Ben, the UD Department of Electrical Engineering, and his family back home in Minnesota. They have a special young man to be proud of.”

Sampson, a native of Woodbury, Minn. (Woodbury HS), earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors for the third time in his career after being named to the third team in 2014 and the second team last year. The only four-time CoSida All-District selection in school history in any sport, he joins Matt Haney (2004-06) as the only men’s soccer players in UD history to earn Academic All-American honor three times.

Following a medical redshirt, Sampson decided to return to the classroom to utilize his fifth year of eligibility this fall to pursue a Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a concentration in signal processing, communications and controls. The 2014 CAA Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, he graduated summa cum laude and top of his class this past spring with a 3.989 cumulative GPA.

Sampson, a two-time team captain, displays a similar hallmark leadership on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He has remained a mainstay on the pitch for Delaware and this year led the Blue Hens (12-8-1) to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament while earning first team All-CAA honors. He played and started in all but one game during the 2016 season and ranked third on the team with four goals.

For his career, he played in 84 games with 83 starts and became Delaware’s all-time leader in both categories. He garnered 10 goals and four assists for 24 points for his career as well and was part of 24 shutouts.

A five-time CAA Academic Honor Roll recipient, Sampson earned Dean’s List honors every semester while at Delaware and is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society and the Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society. He served as an image processing intern at Phase Sensitive Innovations (PSI), which specializes in the development of millimeter wave imaging solutions, during the 2015-16 academic year.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Football Places Seven on All-Colonial Athletic Association Teams; Bell Earns First Team Notice
DATE:  November 22, 2016
RICHMOND, Va
. -- Led by first team selection Charles Bell at linebacker, the University of Delaware placed seven student-athletes on the All-Colonial Athletic Association all-star teams announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Senior offensive lineman Connor Bozick (DeMatha/Severn, Md.), junior offensive lineman Brody Kern (West York/York, Pa.), junior defensive tackle Bilal Nichols (Hodgson/Newark, Del.), and sophomore linebacker Troy Reeder (Salesianum/Hockessin, Del.) each were named to the second team while junior running back Wes Hills (Wildwood/Wildwood, N.J.) and sophomore cornerback Nasir Adderley (Great Valley/Malvern, Pa.) were third team selections.

Bell, a junior linebacker from Conestoga, Pa. (Penn Manor HS), Bozick, Kern, and Nichols each were named to the All-CAA team for the second straight year. Six of the seven selections will return to the team in 2017.

“I am extremely proud and happy for the young men whose talent and hard work were recognized by the some of the best coaches in the country,” said Delaware interim head coach Dennis Dottin-Carter. “Each one of these men fully deserves to be recognized as one of the best players at their positions, in one of the best conferences in the country. No one comes as a surprise. Every one of the student-athletes selected has put in the time during practice, workouts, meetings, and personal study to be recognized today. I’m very happy for our lone senior who was selected, Connor Bozick, and very optimistic about the future of Delaware Football having six returning players selected as the some of the best among their peers. These young men will continue to work, one day at a time, to reach our program goal of winning championships. They are not done yet.”

Bell, a team co-captain who earned second team All-CAA honors a year ago, led Delaware in tackles for the second straight year as he recorded 94 stops (38 solo) to go with a team-high 11.5 tackles for loss. He also had a quarterback sack, intercepted a pass, had two pass breakups, recovered one fumble, and forced another. He recorded 10 or stops four times and had a career-high 13 tackles each vs. Maine, Towson, and Villanova. He also had 11 tackles, 3.5 for loss, and intercepted a pass vs. Stony Brook.

He currently ranks No. 4 in the CAA in both tackles and tackles per game and led a defense that ranks No. 5 in the CAA in total defense, allowing 349.7 yards per game. Bell is the first UD player to earn CAA first team honors since 2014 and the first UD linebacker to earn first team honors since current NFL Atlanta Falcons standout Paul Worrilow in 2012.

“It comes as no surprise that Charles Bell was selected to the All-CAA first team,” said Dottin-Carter. “As a third-year player and two-year starter, he is a gifted athlete who has worked tirelessly to perfect his craft. He holds himself to the highest standards and epitomizes accountability. It isn’t a coincidence that he was elected to be one of our team captains as a junior. Even though he will probably brush it off and get back to work, this honor is certainly merited for Charles.”

Bozick, a 6-5, 320 lb. tackle/guard, and Kern, a 6-2, 290 lb. center, anchored an offensive line that helped Delaware rank No. 2 in the CAA in rushing offense (227.2 yards per game/14th in NCAA) and No. 2 in fewest sacks allowed (11/11th in NCAA). Bozick, who has garnered the attention of many NFL scouts, played in each of his final 46 career games and started 34 of them while Kern has started all 22 games over the last two seasons. Both earned third team All-CAA honors in 2015.

Nichols, a 6-5, 300 lb. defensive tackle, was honored for the second straight year after earning third team laurels in 2015. He was an imposing force on the defensive line all season and collected 25 tackles, including 18 solo stops. He ranked No. 2 on the team and first among full-time down linemen with five sacks for 28 yards and also ranked second on the squad in tackles for loss with 7.5 for 37 yards. He also had a team-high five pass breakups at the line of scrimmage, forced a fumble, and had a sack for a safety in the win over Albany.

Reeder was a force at outside linebacker in his first season at Delaware after transferring back to his home state following a year as a starter at Penn State. He started all 11 games and ranked No. 2 on the team in tackles with 63, including 36 solo stops. He also recorded 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, one pass breakup, one blocked kick, and one fumble recovery. He collected a season-high nine tackles at James Madison and was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week in the win over Albany when he had an interception, forced two fumbles, and recovered another one.

Hills, a team co-captain, earned All-CAA honors despite a frustrating season in which he missed all or most of four games due to various injuries. When he played and was healthy, he was one of the top players in the nation. He still led Delaware in rushing, carrying 88 times for a team-high 728 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 8.3 yards per carry. He was one of the few players in the nation to have two 200-yard rushing efforts as he gained 242 yards and scored two touchdowns vs. Maine and had 212 yards and two scores against Delaware State. Had he played enough game to qualify (75 percent), he would rank No. 14 nationally in yards rushing per game (104.0) and No. 2 in yards per carry (8.3). Hills also missed all but one game of the 2015 season with a broken foot.

Adderley enjoyed an outstanding second season for the Blue Hens as a cornerback and as one of the league’s top kick returners. He started all 11 games on the corner and ranked third on the team and first among all defensive backs with 49 tackles, including a team-high 38 solo stops. He tied for the team lead with two interceptions, returning one for a score vs. Albany, had four pass breakups, and forced a fumble. He also had a career-high 10 tackles vs. William & Mary. On special teams, Adderley returned 28 kickoffs for 662 yards and an average of 23.6 yards per return, good enough to rank No. 4 in the CAA. He had five returns go for 30 or more yards with a season-high 51-yarder vs. Richmond.

Mike Houston, who led James Madison to the CAA title in his first season at the helm, was named CAA Coach of the Year while his quarterback, Bryan Schor, was named Offensive Player of the Year and Villanova defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon was selected Defensive Player of the Year. JMU kick returner Rashard Davis was named Special Teams Player of the Year while the Rookie of the Year honors went to Towson running back Shane Simpson on offense an New Hampshire defensive back Prince Smith on defense. UNH defensive back Casey DeAndrade earned the CAA Chuck Boone Leadership Award.

Each of the teams were selected from a vote of the 12 league head coaches.

Elijah Tillman’s 65-Foot Shot Lifts Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball to Incredible OT Win at USciences

In a game that seemed won and lost by both teams, it took an incredible shot from the most unlikely of players to bring a stunning conclusion.

Senior 6’8” center Elijah Tillman (Garnerville, NY) hit a three-quarter-court shot at the buzzer in overtime that brought Goldey-Beacom an unbelievable 71-68 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

Sophomore Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, NJ), playing his first game of the season, hit the second of his two huge 3-pointers to give the Lightning a 61-56 lead with 5:32 left in regulation. Beni Toure made a layup with 4:38 remaining to bring the Devils within 61-58 before senior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) restored the five-point margin on a layup with 3:39 to play.

A bevy of misses kept it a 63-58 game before what could have been the game’s pivotal moment with 48 seconds left in regulation. Sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) stepped to the foul line and made the front end of a one-and-one, but an inadvertent buzzer sounded and the officials waived off the point. Taite then missed the redo and the Devils’ Will Gregorits hauled in the rebound.

Brandon Hathaway missed a 3-pointer for USciences and Gregorits came up with another huge rebound. After the latter missed a layup, Brendan Crawford grabbed the rebound and his follow with 33 seconds remaining cut the margin to 63-60.

The Lightning then looked to get the ball in, but senior Khalil Keel (Philadelphia, PA) threw it to the Devils’ Jon McGill. The latter then knew what to do, stepping to the left wing and canning the tying 3-pointer with 23 seconds left to force overtime.

Crawford provided the extra session’s third lead change on a jumper with 28 seconds left for a 68-67 contest. Taite then made 1-of-2 from the line with 16 seconds remaining for a tie game and after Gregorits missed a layup, the ball went out of bounds with 2.4 seconds left in favor of GBC.

That all set up the wild finish. Tillman got the ball from senior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech), took one dribble and launched one from 65 feet that went in for the unbelievable triumph.

Taite finished with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting, junior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) had 10 points and Tillman had his first career 3-point attempt for the Lightning (2-2, 1-1 CACC), who shot 44 percent (29-of-66) and snapped their six-game skid vs. the Devils (1-4, 0-1).

Gregorits closed with 20 points and 17 rebounds, McGill scored 19 points and Crawford added 16 for the Devils, who shot 47 percent (29-of-62) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom is home Sunday against American International, starting at noon.

SUBJECT: Smothering Defense Leads to Easy Points as Wilmington Women’s Basketball Downs Shaw, 73-55, in Thanksgiving Classic

DATE: November 25, 2016
djl

ETTRICK, Va. - - A strong defensive performance led the Wilmington University women’s basketball team to a 73-55 victory over Shaw to kick off the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Virginia State University on Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats (2-3) pulled away in the fourth quarter, but led for the majority of the contest thanks in large part to 16 steals and forcing Shaw (1-4) into 24 turnovers in the contest. That allowed the Wildcats to get out on the run, outscoring the Bears, 18-0, on fast break points on Friday.

The Wildcats also held advantages in the paint, 48-14, and points off turnovers, 27-6, only committing seven turnovers themselves in the game.

Macy Robinson paced the Wildcats in the first two quarters, scoring seven points on 3-of-5 shooting in the first before adding nine more points on 3-of-4 shooting in the second quarter.

It was a 10-0 that enabled the Wildcats to take a 12-3 in the early going. Robinson gave the Wildcats a 21-16 lead with a three-pointer, but the Bears stuck around by hitting a three-pointer of their own to end the quarter, 21-19.

Another Robinson three-pointer put the Wildcats ahead, 32-24, midway through the second. Ebonee Dixon laid one in for the Wildcats final bucket of the quarter, putting the team ahead 36-28 heading into the locker room.

The Bears closed the gap to within three points at 46-43 late in the third quarter before Dixon and Jocelyn Rodriguez hit back-to-back shots before LaShyra Williams converted one of two from the foul line to regain a 51-43 lead.

Leading 53-47 early in the fourth, Williams sparked an 18-0 run to put the game away with a layup and a pair of free throws. Robinson scored six points during the run while Rodriguez, Emma Matthews, and Amani Graham also contributed during the spurt, putting the Wildcats ahead, 71-47, late in the game.

Robinson finished with a game-high 24 points, shooting 10-of-15 from the floor including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc in the first half. She also came down with eight rebounds and five steals in the win. Williams collected a double-double in the win, scoring 11 points but adding a team-high 12 rebounds.

Dixon was the final Wildcat to reach double figures, scoring 14 points while adding five rebounds. Rodriguez filled the boxscore with six points, seven rebounds, eight assists (only one turnover), and five steals.

The Wildcats take their two-game winning streak into Saturday when they face host Virginia State in the final game of the Thanksgiving Classic. VSU defeated Salem International, 66-35, in the late game on Friday. Saturday’s tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball Dealt 63-42 Loss at Bowie State

Goldey-Beacom hung around with Bowie State for most of the contest, but in the end was handed a 63-42 loss in Bowie, MD.

Bowie State’s lead was double figures most of the way, but GBC played tough throughout and only was down 44-34 with 1:49 left in the third quarter. Junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) went on a tear in the third quarter with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and got the Lightning within the aforementioned score on a layup.

But the Lady Bulldogs scored the next 12 points over three minutes to gain a 56-34 lead with 8:39 remaining. Kiara Colston netted eight points in that span for Bowie State, helping her squad shoot 5-of-6 from the field.

Bryson closed with 16 points and 15 rebounds, both season highs, for her second double-double of the campaign. Junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) added 11 points for the Lightning (1-5), who shot 29 percent (16-of-56) from the field.

Colston poured in 16 points, Ashley Jennings had 12 and 13 rebounds, Kyah Proctor netted 12 points and Pere Alexander added 10 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs (4-2), who shot 36 percent (25-of-69) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Holds on for 79-73 Triumph Over AIC

A rapid first half turned into a battle of attrition in the second with Goldey-Beacom finally getting across the finish line ahead, 79-73 over American International at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

GBC (3-2) in the first half roared to a 39-24 lead by going 12-for-15 from the line with AIC amassing just an 0-for-1 mark. Seniors Elijah Tillman (Garnerville, NY), Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) and Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) all scored nine points in the half for the Lightning, who shot 41 percent (12-of-29) from the field.

The Lightning owned a 63-53 lead with 5:30 left before the Yellow Jackets (2-5) used an 18-11 run to pull within 74-71 with 24 seconds remaining. Justin Daniel, Tahlib Swan, Jayvon Pitts-Young and Bruce Spruell all netted four points in that span.

But Williams once again came through by knocking down two free throws with 21 seconds to play, securing the Lightning’s third victory this season against four Division I schools.

Tillman, Williams and sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) all scored 16 points for the Lightning, who only shot 37 percent (21-of-57) from the field but went 32-for-41 from the line. Wilson scored 15 points and senior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) added 10 and six assists.

It was Goldey-Beacom’s first game since Tillman threw in a 65-foot shot at the buzzer in Tuesday’s 71-68 overtime win at U. of the Sciences. The play was voted the tenth-best on ESPN’s Top Plays the next day.

AIC also was coming off an overtime victory, less than 24 hours ago at Holy Family. Justin Daniel closed today with 18 points, Pitts-Young netted 14, Swan had 14 and Spruell kicked in 11 for the Yellow Jackets, who shot 52 percent (25-of-48) from the floor and 14-for-21 from the line.

Goldey-Beacom is home Wednesday against Georgian Court as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team. The men’s game starts at 8:00 pm, which follows the women’s 6:00 pm contest.

The Hornets shot 64% in the first half (16-25) and 53.3% in the second (16-30) to post a season-high 58.2% shooting percentage for the game.

Ahmed Bashir led four St. John’s players in double-figures with 19 points.

The Red Storm dropped its fifth straight game to fall to 2-5 this season. Chris Mullen, an All-America at St. John’s and a former NBA star, is in his second season as head coach of the Red Storm.

THE GAME
Delaware State (2-5; 0-0 MEAC) makes the short trip upstate to take on new-look Delaware in the annual battle between the state’s lone Division I men’s basketball programs. The Hornets are coming off an impressive 79-72 win over St. John’s (N.Y.) on Tuesday, marking their first-ever victory against a Big East
opponent. Delaware State led for nearly 35 minutes in the contest. The Hornets held a 38-34 lead at the half and outscored the Red Storm 41-38 in the final 20 minutes. DSU held its biggest lead, 63-48, when Devin Morgan (so.) hit a three-pointer with 9:56 left to play. Morgan led all players with a season-high 26 points on nine-of-13 shooting from the field, including three-of-six on three-point shots. DeVaughn Mallory (so.) added a career-high 16 points for the Hornets. Mallory was eight-for-13 from the floor, and tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Kavon Waller (jr.) continued his torrid shooting this season, hitting six-of-nine shots from the field and three-of-six on three-point attempts to contribute 15 points to the win. DeAndre Haywood (sr.) is DSU’s leading scorer at 14.3 points per game, while Morgan is second at 13.4. Waller is third on the Hornets in scoring (12.4 ppg), second in rebounding (4.3 pg) and ranks No. 1 in the MEAC (sixth in NCAA Div. 1) with .606 three-point shooting percentage (20-33). Mallory, a Polytech (Del.) High School product, is tops on the team and fifth in the MEAC in rebounding at 6.3 per game.

Delaware is off to a 4-3 start under new head coach Martin Inglesby, a long-time assistant under Mike Brey at Notre Dame before accepting the UD position. The Hens are coming off a 84-51 win over Bryn Athyn (Pa.) last Sunday. Chivarsky Corbett led four UD players in double-figures with 18 points. The Hens were 17-for-29 from the field in each half (58.6%) and held a 43-21 lead at the break. Cazmon Hayes is Delaware’s top scorer at 12.4 points per game. Anthony Mosley averages 10.9 points and has a team-high 20 assists, while Darian Bryant is third on the Hens with a 10.5 point per game average. Eric Carter is Delaware’s top rebounder at 7.4 per game. Corbett is the team leader with 11 three-point field goals (11-28). The Hens’ win total includes victory over Bradley and Miami (OH) this season.

HORNETS vs. Hens (Delaware leads 12-4)
The Hornets and Hens have split their last four meetings, with the visiting team winning each time. Delaware won last year’s contest 62-56 in the 2015-16 opener for both teams at DSU’s Memorial Hall. Delaware State led 37-31 at the half, but was outscored 31-19 in the final 20 minutes. The Hornets hit just 9-of-32 second half shots (28.1%), including 1-of-11 from three-point range (9.1%). DSU was outrebounded 44-29 and was zero-for-two at the free throw line in the game. Delaware had 23 free throw attempts, connecting on 16, in the 2015 contest. Devin Morgan was high scorer for the Hornets with 10 points in his collegiate debut, while DeAndre Haywood and Joe Lewis added seven points each for DSU. Delaware State has won its last two games at UD’s Carpenter Center, including a 66-53 wire-to-wire victory the last time the teams met there in 2014. The Hornets also won the 2012 contest , 73-67, in overtime for their first victory at the Carpenter Center. Delaware State won the first meeting between the teams in 1991.
Delaware took the next eight games from 1992 to 2000. The teams did not meet from 2001 to '08.

Thu, December 01, 2016
Cincinnati, OH (Dec. 1, 2016) --- Delaware State junior guard Mikah Aldridge scored a game-high 20 points in her return from a three-game injury absence, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Lady Hornets were throttled by Xavier (OH) 86-53 at the Cintas Center this evening. The contest wrapped up a string of six straight road games for DSU.

Marquia Turner and Imani Partlow led Xavier with 18 points each, while Raeshaun Gaffney added 11 points for the Musketeers.

Aldridge was 7-for-22 from the field and 6-of-8 at the free throw line to record her season-high point total. She scored 13 points in the second half.

Aaliyah Davis scored a season-high 13 points, while NaJai Pollard also tallied 13 for the Lady Hornets.

Once again, DSU was plagued by poor shooting in the early going.

The Lady Hornets were just 2-for-15 from the field in the first quarter (13.3%), which ended with Xavier ahead 19-7.

Delaware State’s shooting improved slightly in the second quarter (4-16), but the Musketeers stretched their lead to 42-19 at the break.

Xavier shot 56% in the second half to outscore the Lady Hornets 44-34 after intermission.

The Musketeers outrebounded Delaware State 49-28. Partlow led all players with 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards. Xavier outscored DSU 22-9 on second chance points.

On the plus side for the Lady Hornets was good ball security. Delaware State committed a season-low eight turnovers, its lowest total since recording seven in a 67-57 loss to Long Island on Dec. 11, 2010.

Delaware State will be idle for the next nine days. The Lady Hornets will return to action on Dec. 11 at home for just the second time this season against NJIT. The contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

Newark, Del. (Dec. 2, 2016) ---Delaware State was outscored 28-10 in the last 14 minutes of a 64-49 loss to Delaware at the Carpenter Center this evening. The Hornets led 39-36 after a three-point play by DeAndre Haywood with 14:40 left to play, but missed 14 of their last 18 shots to suffer their first road loss to the Hens since 2010.

Delaware’s win also snapped a five-game losing streak by the home team in the series between the state’s lone Div. I men’s basketball teams. The Hens hold a 13-4 in the series.

Delaware ‘s Chiversky Corbett led all players with 16 points, highlighted by 5-of-8 shooting on three-point shots. Anthony Mosley added 13 points for the Hens. Eric Carter had a game-high 10 rebounds for Delaware, which owned a 42-26 advantage on the boards.

Haywood was high scorer for Delaware State with 15 points, while DeVaughn Mallory added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.

Delaware led 31-28 at the half, but back-to-back buckets by Haywood and Mallory put the Hornets back in front 36-35 with 16:13 left to play.

After the Haywood basket and free throw gave DSU a three-point lead, Delaware’s Ryan Daly tied the game on a three-point shot with 14 minutes remaining.

The Hens regained the lead, 42-39, on a three-ball by Corbett at the 13:17 mark of the second half. Delaware’s Brian Darlan converted a Delaware State turnover into a lay-up and Cazmon Hayes added a basket to stretch UD’s lead to 46-39.

After a basket by DSU’s Kavon Waller (four points) trimmed the Hens’ lead to 48-44, the Hornets were scoreless for the next five minutes, allowing the Hens to pull ahead by nine.

Delaware State was 8-for-25 from the field in the second half (32%) and was outscored 33-21 in the final 20 minutes.

The Hornets were 1-for-15 from three-point territory in the game (6.7%). DSU entered the game shooting a MEAC-best 42% from beyond the arc.

The 49 points by the Hornets also marked a season low.

Delaware won its second straight game to improve to 5-3, while the Hornets fell to 2-6.

The Hornets will have little time to lick their wounds. They’ll fly to Texas tomorrow for a two-game swing, beginning with a visit to SMU on Sunday (Dec. 4). Game time is 4 p.m. Eastern in Dallas.

Junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ/Millville) equaled her career high with 30 points and Goldey-Beacom pulled away in the second half for a 71-62 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Holy Family in Philadelphia, PA.

Bruno simply was on fire in the opening half, scoring 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting with four rebounds and three 3-pointers, giving GBC a 32-26 lead. The Lightning shot 48 percent (14-of-29) from the floor in the half with the Tigers hitting just 33 percent (11-of-33).

Holy Family, which never led, hung around in the third quarter by using an 11-5 run over 4 1/2 minutes for a 41-40 deficit with 4:14 remaining. Alexis Hofstaedter, who had a day that almost matched Bruno’s, scored four points in the spurt and Katie O’Hare ended it with a 3-pointer.

But GBC (3-5, 3-1 CACC) took over from there, using a 15-4 run over 6 1/2 minutes that gave it a 56-44 cushion with 7:51 remaining in the game. Bruno poured in nine points during that span on 4-of-6 shooting with sophomore Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) adding three points.

Bruno played all 40 minutes, marking the sixth time in her career she accomplished that, and matched her point total from February 28, 2015 at Caldwell in the CACC quarterfinals. She also shot 12-of-22 from the floor to go with seven rebounds, five assists and four 3-pointers.

Junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) scored 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and hauled in nine rebounds, giving her 576 career rebounds that put her eighth in team history. Turner-Rush scored a season-best 11 points and freshman Nina Bartlette (Winthrop, MA) added 10 for the Lightning, who shot 48 percent (29-of-61) from the floor.

Hofstaedter did everything she could, scoring 28 points on 12-of-18 shooting for the Tigers, who shot 43 percent (13-of-30) from the floor in the second half and 38 percent (24-of-63) overall. Elizabeth Radley poured in 11 points and Abigail Iannotti amassed 11 rebounds for Holy Family (1-7, 1-2), which had its four-game winning streak against GBC snapped.

Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday against Chestnut Hill as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team. The women’s game starts at 6:00 pm, which precedes the men’s 8:00 pm contest.

Widener Men’s Basketball Soars Past Stevenson for First Conference Win

CHESTER, Pa. (Dec. 3, 2016) – Sophomore Nick Jackson (Rockville, Md.) poured in 18 points in leading the Widener University men’s basketball team to a 75-61 victory over Stevenson on Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Center.

After Kyle Woodbridge opened the scoring on Stevenson’s opening possession, Widener got a 3-pointer from Ryan McMahon followed by a layup from Sam Smith (Wyomissing, Pa.) and never trailed again. Freshman Elijah Boyd (Germantown, Md.) drove in for a layup to put the Pride ahead by double figures for the first time at 22-11, and the lead was extended up to 18 on two occasions before the end of the half. McMahon sank a free throw to give the hosts a 45-27 advantage at recess.

Junior captain Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, Del.) provided the fireworks and set the tone for the remainder of the game by throwing down a dunk for Widener’s first points of the second half. The junior then converted a layup to give the hosts a commanding 28-point advantage at 69-41 with 7:34 left, which was more than enough insurance for the Pride to run away with the double-digit victory. Sophomore Jalen Howard (Baltimore, Md.) then closed out the scoring in the waning minutes by finishing a pass from Smith.

Jackson netted a game-high 18 points by shooting 8-of-14 from the field and netting a free throw. McMahon and Boyd also reached twin figures with 10 points apiece, while McMahon also dished out three assists and blocked two shots.

Stevenson (1-5, MAC Commonwealth 0-2) got a 10-point effort from Cameron Hayes. The freshman also contributed five rebounds and three assists. Christian Collins provided seven points off the bench.

Widener (5-2, MAC Commonwealth 1-1) continues conference play when it visits Albright on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m.

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men’s basketball team held off a hard charging Philadelphia team in the second half, claiming a 70-64 victory in the team’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Leading by as many as 14 points in the second half, the Wildcats (5-3, 1-0 CACC) had to hold off the Rams (5-3, 2-1 CACC) as they climbed back to as close as one-point late in the game on Saturday.

Already leading 29-23 at the half, the Wildcats started strong in the second half to widen the margin. Tajee Almon had a large say in the Wildcats’ 9-2 run early in the half, scoring seven of the team’s points, including the final five to take a 39-28 lead with 16:47 showing on the clock.

Nick Richards put the Wildcats ahead, 44-34, with a three-pointer, sparking a quick 7-0 spurt to lead 48-34 with 13:16 left in regulation. Brian Adkins made a layup before the full-court pressure forced a turnover and another Richards’ layup during the run for the Wildcats’ largest lead of the game.

But the Rams wouldn’t go away, springing a 13-3 run to close the gap to within 53-49, as the three-pointer began for fall for the Rams. With the lead still at four points, Tyaire Ponzo-Meek went on a personal 6-0 run over the next 2:33 of game time to regain a 10-point advantage at 64-54. But the Rams continued to push back, scoring the next seven points en route to a 10-1 rally to claw to within a single point at 65-64 with 2:12 on the clock.

Omari Dill-Pettiford hit a baseline jumper over the out stretched arm of Philadelphia’s big-man Eric Long with 1:48 to play, turning into the dagger that kept the Rams down. Kaison Randolph missed two shots and a free throw in the next minute, allowing the Wildcats to hit 3-of-4 from the foul line to close out the match, 70-64.

Richards scored 17 points while adding a team high nine rebounds for the Wildcats, hitting a pair of three-pointers. Ponzo-Meek came off the bench to add 17 points for the Wildcats, hitting three three-pointers in the win. Brian Adkins scored 11 points while grabbing seven boards and Almon finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots.

With the win in the nightcap of the CACC doubleheader, Saturday was the first time in the history of the series that the Wildcats defeated the Ram in both women’s and men’s basketball on the same day.

The Wildcats will look to extend their good start in CACC play on Tuesday when they head to USciences for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Women’s Basketball Snaps Streak with 63-60 Victory over Philadelphia

DATE: December 3, 2016

NEWARK, Del. - - Rob Miller knows how to beat Philadelphia.

For the first time since the Wilmington University women’s head coach was in his first tenure with the Wildcats in 2008-09, the women’s basketball team took down the Rams on Saturday, 63-60, in the team’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener at the WU Athletics Complex.

In between the Wildcats’ 60-59 victory at Philadelphia on January 29, 2009, and Saturday afternoon, the Wildcats dropped 15 consecutive games to the Rams, extending their all-time lead to 20-5 against Wilmington.

The streak is no more.

The Wildcats (3-5, 1-0 CACC) turned a 39-33 halftime deficit around with a 16-8 third quarter advantage, eventually taking the lead on a LaShyra Williams layup, 44-43, with 2:24 left in the quarter. The layup was a part of a 9-0 run for the Wildcats, as Macy Robinson capped it with a three-pointer to grab a 49-43 lead in the final minute of the quarter. But the Rams (4-4, 1-2 CACC) scored the final four points of the frame to climb to within 49-47 heading into the final 10-minutes of action.

The Rams grabbed a 51-50 lead with a Ayoola Oguntuase layup before a quick 6-1 run put the Wildcats back in front, 56-52 with 6:04 to play on a Williams layup. The Rams struck again however, taking as large as a 60-58 lead with a Rachel Day three-pointer with 2:30 left in regulation.

Nyree Grant cut the deficit to a single point with a free throw, 60-59, but didn’t take the lead until the final minute. The Rams settled for a long distanced three-pointer with the clock under 30 seconds and Robinson came down with the rebound. Robinson put an outlet to Ebonee Dixon who pushed it ahead to Grant. Grant made one more pass to Williams on the right side who laid it home for the 61-60 lead with 25 seconds left.

The defense squeezed the Rams on the ensuing possession, forcing a turnover as the seconds ticked away. Out of a timeout, Robinson was fouled by calmly hit both free throws for the three-point lead. A last ditch effort three-pointer by the Rams was off the mark, giving the Wildcats the 63-60 victory.

Williams led a quartet of Wildcats in double digits with 16 points while Grants came down with her second straight double-double, scoring 10 points and securing a game-high 17 rebounds. Robinson added 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting while Jocelyn Rodriguez chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Wildcats out-rebounded the Rams, 47-37, including 20-15 on the offensive glass. That led to an 18-10 advantage in second chance points for the ‘Cats.

The Wildcats will look to keep the momentum going in the CACC with another league match on Tuesday, as they head to USciences with a scheduled 6 p.m. tip.

Goldey-Beacom saw all five starters crack double figures and enjoyed its best shooting of the season to date for its fourth straight victory, a 92-62 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rout of Holy Family in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom (5-2, 3-1 CACC) in the first half scored 15 straight points over just 3 1/2 minutes to grab a 34-21 lead with 5:39 remaining. Seniors Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) and Elijah Tillman (Garnerville, NY) scored four points apiece in that span for the Lightning, who shot 5-of-5 from the floor and made both three-point attempts.

The lead at halftime was 50-35 thanks to the Lightning shooting an eye-popping 65 percent (20-of-31) from the floor and 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Tigers (3-6, 2-1) were held to a mere 36 percent (12-of-33) from the field and 4-of-18 from three-point range.

If that was not enough, the Lightning then went on an 18-3 run over seven minutes to open a 70-42 cushion with 10:58 to play. Sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) scored eight points in that spurt for GBC, which shot 8-of-12 from the floor and limited Holy Family to just 1-of-12.

Goldey-Beacom finished shooting a season-best 59 percent (38-of-64) from the floor and 10-of-17 from beyond the arc to snap a four-game skid in the series. Holy Family did not help itself by shooting 35 percent (23-of-65) from the field and 7-of-36 from three-point range.

Junior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) had 14 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) notched 14, nine and six assists off the bench, Ridgeway-Higgs amassed 14 points and nine assists, senior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) scored 14 points, Tillman netted 13 and Taite added 10 for the Lightning.

Dyllon Hudson-Emory poured in 20 points, Randy Bell netted 14 and Maliq Sanders added 12 for the Tigers.

Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday against Chestnut Hill as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team. The men’s game starts at 8:00 pm, which follows the women’s 6:00 pm contest.

SUBJECT: Nine Home Games, Tilt With Navy Highlight 2017 University of Delaware Men’s Lacrosse Schedule
DATE: December 5, 2016
NEWARK, Del
. -- The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team will play nine home games, including a matchup with 2016 NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist Navy, as Blue Hen head coach Bob Shillinglaw announced the squad’s 2017 schedule on Monday.
The Blue Hens, who finished 5-10 overall and 2-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play last year, kick off the campaign on Saturday, Feb. 4 with a home game against Bucknell.
