SUBJECT: University of Delaware and North Dakota State Announce Home and Home Football Series in 2018 and 2019
DATE:  August 10, 2016

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware and North Dakota State University have agreed to a two-game contract for football games during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

NDSU will host the Blue Hens in the season opener Sept. 1, 2018, at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome. Delaware will host the Bison at Delaware Stadium in Newark on Sept. 14, 2019.

These will be the first two meetings between Missouri Valley Conference leader North Dakota State and Delaware, which plays in the Colonial Athletic Association.

“We look forward to a tremendous challenge,” said Delaware fourth-year head coach Dave Brock. “We are excited to bring one of the elite programs in the nation to Delaware Stadium and look forward to that first meeting in 2018. Both administrations did a great job pulling together and making this happen.”

“I’m excited for our team and our fans to see a new opponent from a strong conference in the CAA,” said third-year NDSU head coach Chris Klieman. “The return trip to Delaware is going to be a great test for us. They’re a Top 10 team in attendance and it is one the best environments in the FCS.”

Delaware won the FCS national championship in 2003 with a 15-1 record as a member of the Atlantic 10. The Blue Hens joined the CAA in 2007 and were national runners-up in 2007 and 2010.

NDSU has won 20 straight FCS playoff games and five straight national titles since a 2010 quarterfinal overtime loss at Eastern Washington, which beat Delaware in the national championship.

One of the two teams has played in each of the last six FCS national championship games and in 8 of the last 13.

“We are thrilled to begin this football series with North Dakota State,” said Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak. “I know that Coach Brock and his team and certainly our fans will be excited to see the Blue Hens square off against a program that has been at the forefront of FCS football over the last five years. Two great football programs with longstanding traditions from different regions meeting up is a great thing for college football.”

“Delaware is one of the more storied programs in FCS football and has a great tradition and fan base,” said NDSU director of athletics Matt Larsen. “We are excited for Bison Nation to see their team on the East Coast for the first time.”

North Dakota State will be Delaware's first Missouri Valley Conference opponent since hosting South Dakota State on Sept. 11, 2010.

Both teams annually rank among the national FCS leaders in home attendance. NDSU ranked No. 7 nationally in home attendance with a mark of 18,497 in 2015 while Delaware ranked ninth with an average home total of 15,826 a year ago.

Delaware will open the 2016 season on Thursday, Sept. 1 vs. Delaware State at Delaware Stadium.

Great season and single game tickets are available online at www.bluehens.com under “Tickets”, by phone at 302-831-2257, and in-person at the Bob Carpenter Center Ticket Office. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Four to Captain KU Field Hockey in 2016
8/15/2016 | Field Hockey
KUTZTOWN, Pa. - A quartet of Golden Bears will lead the Kutztown University field hockey team this year as the squad has announced its captains for the 2016 season.

Seniors Courtney Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) and Megan Tiwold (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) will be joined by juniorsCourtney Konowal (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh)and Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) as KU attempts to build off a 2015 campaign that saw the Golden Bears host their first playoff game in school history.

Ueberroth is coming off a season in which she was selected Second Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) at the midfield position. She started all 19 of Kutztown's games and was fifth on the team with four goals and 11 points despite primarily serving in a defensive role. She also ranked second with 27 shots and two defensive saves, as well as fourth with 15 shots on goal.

Tiwold is KU's leading returning scorer as she posted 16 points on seven goals, two of which were game-winners, and two assists in 2015. In addition to starting in all 19 contests, she was third on the team with 17 shots on goal and fourth with 22 shots. Having earned Dean's List honors in all six of her collegiate semesters, she is a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete and three-time member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad.

Like Ueberroth, Konowal was also an All-PSAC selection as a midfielder in 2015, earning her way on to the Third Team a season after being named to the Second Team as a freshman. She too started all 19 games a year ago, registering eight points on two goals and four assists, the latter of which was good for third on the squad. Also successful in the classroom, she is a four-time Dean's List honoree and two-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, and has been recognized by the NFHCA twice as both a member of the National Academic Squad and a Scholar of Distinction.

Hope saw action as a goalkeeper in six contests in 2015, totaling 134 minutes and making four saves for the Golden Bears. Three times she came on to preserve a shutout, including net minding the complete second halves in blanking's of Mercy and St. Thomas Aquinas.

Kutztown field hockey begins its 2016 season with a three-game homestand, opening the year when it welcomes Saint Anselm to Andre Reed Stadium for a noon start on Sept. 3.

SUBJECT: Four Former Wildcats Continue Soccer Careers Throughout Europe

DATE: August 15, 2016

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University men’s soccer team was recently selected to finish atop the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference standings in the 2016 CACC Preseason Poll, but getting there relies on having a strong foundation in the program.

The depth of the program over the last few years is continually on display, as a number of former Wildcats have extended their playing career with professional contracts in Europe.

Last playing for the Wildcats in 2013, goalkeeper Spyros Stergiotis continues to play in professionally in Greece in 2016. The 2014 graduate has made two starts in goal for Panelefsiniakos F.C this season, playing in Greece’s Football League Division II. The team plays in the southern city Elefsina, northwest of Athens, Greece.

JJ Naiwo last suited up for the Wildcats in 2014 but helped lead the Wildcats to the 2015 CACC Regular Season Championship and a spot in the NCAA East Regional Tournament from the sidelines. He recently signed a contract to play in Sweden’s Division 2 Norrland (Tier 4) for Gallivare Malmbergets. The team plays its home games in the northern city of Gallivare, Sweden.

A pair of 2016 graduates recently signed their first professional contract after most recently helping the Wildcats on the pitch last fall. Two-year captain Joe Woodley signed on to play for Solleftea GIF of Sweden’s Division 3 Norra Norland (Tier 5). The team plays in the east central portion of the country in Solleftea, Sweden.

Fellow 2015 defender Tom Debenham is the most recent Wildcat to sign a professional contract, joining Bury Town F.C in his hometown of Suffolk, England. The Blues play in the Ryman Isthmian League Division One North, the eighth tier of the English Football League ladder. Bury St. Edmunds is located northeast of London.

In hopes of making the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament a third consecutive year, Goldey-Beacom was picked to close ninth in the league based on a vote of the league’s coaches.

GBC (8-10, 5-7 CACC) last season made the conference tournament a second straight year, marking the first time this happened since the squad went four consecutive seasons from 2003-06. The Lightning last year recorded eight contests in which they were breached for no more than one goal.

Runciman enters the year tied for third in school history with 16 assists and 10th with 40 points.

Senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) returns for her fourth season as the squad’s starting goalkeeper. A key part of the defense, she enters the year second in school history with eight shutouts, third with a 2.16 save percentage and fourth with 169 saves.

Senior Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ/Hightstown) closed fourth on the team with 16 points that included seven goals and sophomore Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) amassed 13 points.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Despite finishing second in the 2015 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division standings, the Wilmington University was again picked to finish atop the league as the conference office announced the 2016 CACC Volleyball Preseason Poll on Wednesday.

It is the fourth year in a row the Wildcats have been voted atop the South Division at the beginning of the year. The Wildcats are coming off a 23-10 campaign, advancing to the CACC Tournament Semifinals after finishing 15-4 in the CACC.

Eight of the league’s 14 head coaches put the Wildcats in the top spot in the South Division, earning 91 total points to lead the group by 13 points. Last season’s CACC South Division Regular Season Champion Philadelphia finished second with four first place votes and 78 total points.

Holy Family claimed a first place vote and 70 points for third while Georgian Court rounds out the predicted teams to come out of the South Division for the CACC Tournament with a first place vote and 63 total points.

Chestnut Hill picked up 41 points for fifth followed by USciences (25) and Goldey-Beacom (20) to round out the South Division.

Two-time defending CACC Tournament Champion Post claimed the top spot in the North Division again, picking up nine first place votes and 91 total points to lead the group. Bloomfield claimed the other five first place votes to earn 84 points for second.

Caldwell holds onto third place with 70 points while Dominican rounds out the predicted foursome coming out of the North Division for the postseason with 45 points. Concordia and Felician tied for fifth with 34 points while Nyack rounds out the North Division with 32 points.

The Wildcats begin their season in Melbourne, Florida, on September 2 when they take on Puerto Rico-Mayaguez to kick off the 2016 Panther Invitational Tournament hosted by Florida Tech.

The CACC portion of the schedule begins on September 17 at Felician with the top four teams from each division advancing to the CACC Tournament. The First Round is scheduled for November 15 with the advancing team playing in the CACC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday, November 19, hosted by Wilmington University. A champion will be crowned on Sunday, November 20 at the WU Athletics Complex.

Dover, Del. (Aug. 18, 2016) --- A new era for the Delaware State women’s soccer program begins Friday evening when the Hornets kick off the 2016 season at Lafayette of the Patriot League. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. tomorrow at Lafayette’s Mike Bourger Field in Easton, Pa.

The contest also marks the debut of new Hornet head coach and Delaware native Kortney Rhoades, a standout at Padua Academy in Wilmington before a successful college career at the University of South Carolina. While at South Carolina, Rhoades helped lead the Gamecocks to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and the school’s first-ever Southeast Conference Tournament and regular season championships.

Rhoades was an assistant coach at Div. II Colorado Mesa before accepting the Delaware State job this summer.

She is the sixth coach in the history of the DSU women’s soccer program.

Rhoades will inherit 12 players from the Hornets’ 2015 squad, which set a school record for wins in a season (8) and captured the Independent teams tournament for the second straight year.

The top returning scorers are midfielders Elise Pratt (sr.) and Dina Isham (sr.).

Pratt was tied for the team lead in assists (3) and ranked third on the Hornets in points (9) and tied for fourth on the club with three goals last season.

Isham was tied with Pratt and two others for fourth on the team with three scores and ranked sixth on the Hornets with six points in 2015.

Forward Ayanna Smith (sr.), the Most Outstanding Performer of the 2015 Independent Tournament, also returns. She was tied with Pratt for the team high with three assists and tallied one goal last season.

The 2016 Hornets also featured experienced goal keeper Michelle Lammers, who posted the most shutout victories (5.2) and collected the seventh most saves (86) in DSU single-season history a year ago.

Delaware State’s 2016 roster also features 11 newcomers, including eight freshmen.

“My goal is to continue the growth that former coach Kerri Scroope was able to do while she was here,” said Rhoades. “From what I’ve seen, we already have a good program here and my expectation would be to just keep growing it and get the Delaware State name out there more than just the Tri-State area.”

The Delaware State contest also marks the 2016 opener for Lafayette, which posted an 8-7-1 overall record last season, including a 1-0 victory over the Hornets in Dover, Del.

The Hornets will play their 2016 home opener this Sunday (Aug. 21) against Temple. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at DSU's Alumni Stadium.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Competing in their first season of varsity intercollegiate competition this fall, the Wilmington University women’s tennis team received 13 points and finished eighth in the 2016 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, as announce by the conference office on Thursday.

In a vote of the league’s eight head coaches, the Wildcats earned 13 points for eighth place. Chestnut Hill, who reached the CACC Tournament Championship match a season ago, claimed the top spot with six first place votes and 61 total points.

Goldey-Beacom earned a spot in the CACC Tournament Semifinals in 2015 and received two first place votes and 53 points for second in the preseason poll. Post also reached the CACC Tournament Semifinals last fall and picked up 46 points for third place this season. Philadelphia rounds out this fall’s projected CACC Tournament with 40 points and a spot in fourth place.

USciences claims the fifth spot in the poll with 28 points followed by Holy Family (26 points), Caldwell (21), and Wilmington.

The Wildcats make their debut on the road on September 10 when they travel to East Region power NYIT for a nonconference match. The team opens their CACC schedule at Goldey-Beacom (at the Delcastle Tennis Center) on Wednesday, September 14.

They are looking to be one of the top four teams throughout the CACC schedule to advance to the CACC Tournament starting on October 22 at Georgian Court University. A champion will be crowned on October 23 in Lakewood, N.J.

6. Holy Family University – 26
7. Caldwell University – 21
8. Wilmington University - 13

The prolific history of Goldey-Beacom’s women’s tennis program once again should take another step forward this season as the squad was picked to end second in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference based on a vote by the league’s coaches.

GBC (8-7, 4-3 CACC) has made the CACC Tournament eight straight years, the longest streak of any team in school history, and that includes four trips to the final. The Lightning last season had four singles players close above .500 and the team recorded late-season victories over Philadelphia U. and Caldwell to end in fourth place.

One of those key players was senior Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany), who amassed a 9-6 singles record that included 8-5 at the third spot and an 8-7 mark in doubles. Sengl also was presented the league’s Women’s Tennis Top XV Award for having the best GPA among those participating at the league championship.

Sengl enters the campaign sixth in school history with 33 doubles wins and eighth with 31 singles triumphs.

Senior Francesca Beg (Westbury, England), a key player from the historic 2014-15 squad, posted an 11-3 doubles mark and won a first-round match in the “A” singles flight at the ITA Championship in a year she competed at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Manuela Cornejo (Waldbronn, Germany) had a solid debut campaign last season, closing 8-4 in singles and 6-3 in doubles, and will be one of the players counted on this year.

GBC received a pair of first-place votes and Chestnut Hill got the top spot with six first-place nods. The league once again will have eight teams with Concordia (NY), the seven-time reigning CACC champion, suspending its program and Wilmington (DE) introducing the sport.

The league’s top five teams will compete in the CACC Tournament, beginning October 18. The fourth and fifth seeds will battle in a first-round tie with the winner joining the remaining three teams in the semifinals.

Goldey-Beacom opens its season September 1 at LIU Post on the same Brookville, NY courts in which it beat Chestnut Hill, 5-3, in 2015 for the school’s first head-to-head NCAA Tournament victory in any sport. The home opener is September 14 vs. Wilmington at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

Sat, August 20, 2016
Dover, Del. (Aug. 20, 2016) --- The Delaware State football team wrapped up its second week of preseason camp with a full contact scrimmage at Alumni Stadium this morning.

“Each day we’re closer to where we need to be,” said Delaware State second year head coach Kenny Carter. “I was pleased with the intensity on both sides of the ball and more guys are beginning to separate themselves in key positions.”

One position where there is no separation at the top is quarterback because lefties Kobie Lain (so.) and junior college transfer Daniel Epperson (jr.) remain “co-number 1s,” according to Carter.

Lain and Epperson rotated with the No. 1s and 2s during the scrimmage, while veteran Gil Rivera (sr.) also took a few snaps.

“Right now, its Kobie and Dan or Dan and Kobie at starting quarterback,” Carter said. “They are evenly matched and making equal progress in the offense and their decision-making. I’m comfortable with either guy on the field.”

Carter was also impressed with the Hornets’ running back tandem of Brycen Alleyne (so.) and freshman Mike Waters.

“Each of those guys is equally dangerous as runners and pass catchers,” Carter said. “We’re trying to put them in position to get out in space, where they can turn any play into a big gain.”

Alleyne, a former Concord High School (Del.) star, is the Hornets’ top returning rusher and kickoff returner from last season. He also led the team with five touchdowns as a true freshman in 2015.

“I really like the way the offense is progressing and way I’m being used,” he said. “The addition of Mike (Waters) is huge for the offense because he is so versatile and explosive. We do a lot of the same things and complement each other out of the backfield.”

Waters rushed for nearly 3,000 yards and 51 touchdowns at Imhotep Charter in Philadelphia.

On defense, Carter has been impressed with the progress new coordinator Gerard Wilcher and his staff are making with the unit.

“Our defense is really flying to the ball and getting good pressure on the quarterback, primarily from the linebacker position,” Carter said. “Our linebackers have been free to make plays because the upfront guys, particularly Javon Barnes and Ulises De Los Santos, are doing such a good job.”

Carter singled out the play of new linebackers Garfield Heslop (jr.) and Brian Cavicante (fr.), along with veterans Malik Harris and Rashawn Barrett for their performances during camp.

The Hornet head coach reserved some of his most glowing praise for the play of senior cornerback Gary Melton, Jr., who was the among the MEAC leaders in pass break-ups last season.

“Gary has taken his game to another level this year,” Carter said. “He’s solid in pass coverage and equally impressive against the run. He’s raised the level of our entire defense because of the example he sets on and off the field.”

The Hornets kick off the 2016 at Delaware in a renewal of the “First State Rivalry” on Thu. Sep. 1. Game time is 7 p.m. at UD’s Tubby Raymond Field.

Delaware State will play its 2016 home opener on Sat. 10 against Monmouth. The Hall-of-Fame contest is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Football’s Focus Shifting to Georgia Tech

Eagles complete their second scrimmage with a keen eye on the opener in two weeks

Selected Quotes

Photo Gallery

Two weeks out from the 2016 opener, the Boston College football team was focused on Georgia Tech when the team took to Shea Field for its second preseason scrimmage on Saturday morning.

The Eagles spent considerable time honing the defense for Georgia Tech's triple-option offense, which they'll face on Sept. 3 when the teams meet at Dublin's Aviva Stadium at 7:30 a.m. ET on ESPN2.

"We're getting ready for Georgia Tech," head coach Steve Addazio said. "We've been working on it all summer. We are running their offense; we have it installed. Really, Myles Willis has been running the show.

"We've been working on that and it's been really fun. The guys have really embraced it. Guys like (Tyler) Rouse, (Myles) Willis. We have starters running that offense right now so that we can mimic the speed (of Georgia Tech)."

While the defense got a healthy dose of the Rambling Wreck's offensive tendencies, the Eagles' offense also got off to a fast start when they took the field.

Whereas the first scrimmage one week ago featured late scores – two offensive and one defensive – this week's edition got off to a flying start when sophomore defensive back Taj-Amir Torres took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown.

Soon after, redshirt freshman running back Davon Jones scampered 70-plus yards from scrimmage and was pulled down at the one before he plunged it in for the offense's first score of the day.

Graduate quarterback Patrick Towles added a 50-plus yard run from scrimmage as he broke into open space before the play was whistled dead and sophomore kicker Colton Lichtenberg later connected for a 35-yard field goal. Towles then found Rouse with the short pass, and the running back spun from his defender for the 45-yard touchdown completion. Redshirt freshman receiver Ben Glines wrapped up the scoring with a 20-yard sweep play.

Before Glines' score, the Eagles worked on several goal-line plays in quick succession where sophomore running back Richard Wilson added a pair of one-yard scores. The offense had a chance for two more touchdowns in the drill when Towles had sophomore tight end Tommy Sweeney open on one side of the end zone and senior fullback Bobby Wolford open on the other side. He overthrew both.

"I've just got to be sharper," Towles said. "There's no excuse for that. I've got to make those throws, and I will. I have no doubt that I'll make those throws. I'll just keep going to work. I'll work with Tommy (Sweeney) and Bobby on those and we'll make them when we have to."

Addazio agreed on his quarterback's assessment and added that it was a product this point of camp.

"It was not very good today, in my opinion," he said. "We had a lot of drops, though. We are in the two-week mark of camp and it was like everyone had the ankle weights on today. Everyone was tired and we didn't look crisp.

"(Towles and Darius Wade) have had a great camp. They have thrown the ball really well and have done a great job. They threw some great passes today, but the consistency at the position – we have bobbled some snaps and were just doing some things today that didn't look good to me," Addazio said.

While Addazio had a critical eye on his offense, he noted the most positive aspect of this morning's two-and-a-half hour scrimmage: "Here is the great news: no one got seriously hurt today. That's what makes me feel the best when you get to this Saturday after two weeks. This is the time when you usually have your issues. I shouldn't even say anything … I need wood to knock on."

Easton, Pa. (Aug. 19, 2016) --- Lafayette scored an early goal and never looked back in a 4-0 victory over Delaware State in a women’s soccer match this evening. The contest was the season opener for both teams.

It also marked the debut of new Hornet head coach Delaware native Kortney Rhoades, a standout at Padua Academy in Wilmington before a successful career at the University of South Carolina. Rhoades was an assistant coach at Division II Colorado Mesa before accepting the DSU job this summer.

The match was in its second minute (1:49) when Lafayette’s Melissa Lynsky scored off feeds from Kaelin King and Gabrielle Martone to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.

The score held up for the next 28-and-a-half minutes. Lafayette got off six shots during the span, three of which were saved by DSU goal keeper Michele Lammers.

The Leopards struck again in the 31st minute. Once again Lynsky found the net off a pass across the goal by King to open up a 2-0 lead.

Lafayette pulled ahead 3-0 when King fired a shot past Lammers off a pass from Alex Stanford in the 39th minute.

Delaware State was able to get off its first shot of the match in the final minute of the period, but Alexa Gibbs’ attempt was high.

The Leopards led 3-0 at the break.

Lammers made two saves early in the second period, but Lafayette scored its final goal on a shot by Joanna Scotti off a corner kick in the 67th minute.

DSU’s best scoring chance came on a header by Braxton Clark, but by Lafayette goal keeper Danielle Sadillo made the save.

Lammers had nine saves in the contest for the Hornets.

Delaware State will be back in action on Sunday for the home opener against Temple. The match begins at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. The Hornets are also home for the following contest on Aug. 28 Hartford (1 p.m.).

Dover, Del. (Aug. 21, 2016) --- Gabriella McKeown had two goals and an assist to lead Temple to a 5-0 women’s soccer victory over Delaware State in the Hornets’ 2016 home opener at Alumni Stadium this afternoon.

Temple (1-1) opened the scoring in the ninth minute of the contest (8:33) when Fran Davis beat DSU goal keeper Michele Lammers to the ball and fired a shot into the net after a cross by Jules Blank to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

Temple opened up a 2-0 lead when McKeown scored her first goal of the match in the 42nd minute (41:33) on a shot from 20 yards out.

The Owls opened the second period with a bang, scoring just 21 seconds into the stanza. Sarah McGlinn found the net from 25 yards out off a feed from McKeown to put the Hornets in a 3-0 hole.

Delaware State (0-2) had two good scoring chances in the second period. Savannah Taylor’s free kick from 15 yards out hit the crossbar in the 55th minute.

Six minutes later, Taylor was awarded a penalty kick, but Temple goal keeper Jordan Nash thwarted the attempt.

McGeown notched her second goal of the match on a back kick in front of the net at the 75 minute mark and Morgan Morocco closed out the scoring with an unassisted shot past Lammers six minutes later.

Lammers had six saves in the contest.

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team was spotted 10th in the Northeast-10 Conference's preseason poll that was released by the league office today and chosen by the member institutions' head coaches. The Purple Knights received 67 points, which left them just eight points shy of ninth-place The College of Saint Rose.

Southern New Hampshire University, which won its fourth consecutive NE-10 Championship and qualified for its eighth straight NCAA Tournament last year, was picked first in the poll with 167 points. The Penmen are currently ranked eighth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason national poll.

Last year, Saint Michael's was also chosen 10th in the preseason poll but finished among the top eight teams in the league, qualifying for its first postseason berth in eight seasons. The Purple Knights, who ended up 8-9-1 overall and 5-7-1 in conference play, fell to top-seeded Southern New Hampshire, 3-0, in the NE-10 Championship quarterfinals. Key to their success were five one-goal victories, leading to a 3-0-1 overtime mark. Among the NE-10 counterparts the Purple and Gold defeated in overtime were Southern Connecticut State University and Bentley University, both of which were regionally ranked at the time, and which are fifth and sixth, respectively, in the preseason poll.

Senior forward Aaron DaCosta (Newark, Del./Archmere Academy) netted six goals and added three assists last year as the team leader in tallies and points (15). Sophomore forward/midfielder Cole McIntire (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) scored twice and dished out four assists in only nine games during his rookie season, while junior midfielder Adrián Díaz (Santiago de Compostela, Spain/Vermont Academy) also handed out four assists. Junior Daniel du Feu (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) is the lone returning goalkeeper with college experience, turning in a 1.82 goals-against average and a 3-3 mark during his debut season last fall. First-year Gabriel Pineda (Miami, Fla./Immaculata-La Salle) served a redshirt season and is the only other netminder on the roster.

The Purple Knights graduated eight seniors but welcome 13 newcomers to the program. Seventh-year head coach Wade Jean and the 2016 team kick off the new season on Sept. 2 against Assumption College at 4 p.m. The game will be played on the campus of Saint Anselm College as part of first-round play in the fourth annual Catholic Cup. Consolation and championship game action will take place the next day at 12 and 3 p.m., respectively.

The Delaware State women’s soccer team wraps up a two-game homestand on Sunday when Hartford visits Alumni Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest.

The Hornets, under new head coach Kortney Rhoades, are seeking their first win of the season. DSU has been idle since a loss to Temple in its 2016 home opener last Sunday.

Hartford brings a 1-1 record into the contest. The Hawks opened the season with a 1-0 victory at Manhattan on Aug. 18 and dropped a 2-1 decision to NJIT last Monday. This is the team’s third of four straight road contests to begin the season.

Sunday’s contest will also mark the first meeting between the Hornets and Hawks.

Delaware State has eight shots in its two games, three on goal, two by Savannah Taylor and the other by Braxton Clark.

The Hornets are hoping to get off better starts. DSU allowed the first goal of the match in the second minute of the opener at Lafayette (Aug. 19) and in the ninth minute vs. Temple last Sunday.

Hornet goal keeper Michele Lammers has kept the team within striking distance in the first two contests, collecting 15 saves.

Caitlin Smallfield and Kaila Lozada has accounted for Hartford’s goals this season. Lozada, a midfielder, is the reigning America East Conference Rookie-of-the-Week.

After visits to Wagner (Sep. 2) and Quinnipiac (Sep. 4), Delaware State returns home on Sep. 14 to face St. Peter’s in the 6 p.m. contest at Alumni Stadium.

Sun, August 28, 2016
Dover, Del. (Aug. 28, 2016) --- Hartford scored two late first period goals and added two in the second stanza to defeat Delaware State 4-0 in a women’s soccer contest at Alumni Stadium today.

Ashley Cloud had a goal and an assist to lead the Hawks to their second win in three contests, while the Hornets are winless in three matches this season.

Although Hartford controlled the ball for much of the first period, the Hornets managed to keep the Hawks from getting off many good shots until late in the frame.

Hartford broke through in the 40th minute (39:14) when Sierra Stone fired a shot past DSU goal keeper Michele Lammers off a feed from Carolina Massey.

A little more than five minutes later, the Hawks opened up a 2-0 lead when Claud, off a throw in, dribbled more than 20 yards before scoring from five feet out just before the end of the period.

Julia Carr scored an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute and Claud fed Bridgette Alexander with a cross from the far right corner that she directed with her head into the net in the 77th minute to round out the scoring for the Hawks.

Delaware State goal keeper Leslie Fazio entered the contest at the 34:02 mark of the second period for her first action of the season. She allowed the final Hartford goal, but had four saves, including one on a penalty kick by Haylen Nolan in the 83rd minute.

The Hornets managed just three shots in the contest, two on goal.

Tue, August 30, 2016
Dover, Del. (Aug. 30, 2016) --- The start of the next Delaware State baseball season is more than five months away, but the Hornets are feeling good about the upcoming campaign after a pep talk from Washington Nationals manager and former major league star Dusty Baker.

Baker included a talk with the Hornet baseball team to his agenda during a visit to the DSU campus this week. He was invited to campus by long-time friend Ezrah Aharone, a DSU adjunct associate professor in the Department of History, Political Science and Philosophy.

Baker also met with Delaware State President Harry L. Williams and university student leaders during his visit.

A 19-year major leaguer and two-time All-Star, Baker spent much of his career with the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles. He was a teammate of Hank Aaron with the Braves and was a member of the Dodger’s 1981 World Series championship team.

His managerial highlights include leading the San Francisco Giants, led by Barry Bonds, to the 2002 National League pennant and a trip to the World Series. He also led the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds to playoff appearances.

His Washington Nationals team is currently in first place in the National League’s East Division.

DSU Head Baseball Coach J.P. Blandin said it was a treat for his players to hear Baker talk about his experiences.

“The thing that stood out the most was his eagerness to interact and engage with our kids,” Blandin said. “It’s easy to understand why he has been desired in so many clubhouses over the years after the amount of time he spent with our guys today.”

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Tennis Postponed at LIU Post

The return trip to Nassau County was supposed to be a memorable one for Goldey-Beacom’s women’s tennis team, but it instead turned into a season-opening rainout for the squad’s match against LIU Post.

No make-up date has been announced.

The match would have been the Lightning’s first visit to the Brookville, NY campus since their historic NCAA Tournament win there in 2015, 5-3 over Chestnut Hill. It was Goldey-Beacom’s first head-to-head NCAA Tournament victory in any sport and the squad ended the 2014-15 campaign ranked 31st in the country.

Goldey-Beacom’s season debut now also will be its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener with the squad next Friday battling Philadelphia U. at 4:00 pm. Please note this is a schedule change from what was published last month.

Senior Rerom Delys (Vila Velha, Brazil) scored twice and junior Declyn Brown (Glasgow, Scotland) netted his first collegiate goal, lifting Goldey-Beacom to a 3-1 season-opening triumph at Pittsburgh-Johnstown in Johnstown, PA.

Brown, who has been an extremely valuable player at midfield the last two seasons, finally was rewarded with the season’s first goal. He took a cross from sophomore Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) in the sixth minute and headed in the back of the net to open the scoring.

Delys then took his turn on center stage, scoring twice in a span of 94 seconds to give the Lightning a 3-0 cushion. His first was a finish off Aghrim’s pass in the 32nd minute and the second came courtesy of a rebound after Brown’s initial attempt hit the crossbar in the 33rd minute.

Delys now has nine career goals, putting him one off of 10th place in school history.

GBC ended the half with a 13-1 edge in shots and Delys was responsible for four of them.

The Lightning (1-0) were in command throughout, ending with a 25-4 shots edge thanks to seven from Delys and three each from Aghrim and junior Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil). Sophomore Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) only had to make two saves with his first coming in the 62nd minute.

Colton Myers scored for the Mountain Cats (0-1) in the 38th minute and Nate Kleya amassed eight saves.

Goldey-Beacom plays its home opener next Wednesday against Saint Thomas Aquinas, starting at 4:00 pm.
