MBB: HORNETS WIN MEAC OPENER ON HAYWOOD’s LAST-SECOND SHOT
Courtesy DSU Athletic Media Relations
Sat, January 07, 2017
Greensboro, N.C. (Jan. 7, 2017) ---Senior DeAndre Haywood hit a driving shot in the lane with 0.3 seconds left to give Delaware State a 55-53 come-from-behind victory over North Carolina A&T in the Hornets’ 2016-17 MEAC opener at the Corbett Sports Center today.

Haywood, who was also fouled on the shot, missed the free throw and time expired to give DSU its first win in a MEAC opener since the 2012-13 season. The Hornets also won their third straight against the Aggies and snapped a four-game overall losing streak to improve to 4-12 this season.

Haywood’s basket capped off a late rally for the Hornets, who trailed 43-36 after a basket and free throw by NCA&T’s Davaris McGowens with 8:02 left to play. DSU outscored the Aggies 13-5 over the next five-plus minutes, and grabbed its first lead of the second half, 49-48, on a dunk by Artem Tavakalyan with 2:52 remaining in the game.

On the ensuing possession, Amari Hamilton nailed a three-point shot to put North Carolina A&T back ahead 51-49.

The Aggies stretched their lead to 53-49 on a dunk by McGowens with 1:54 left to play.

After a free throw by DSU’s Mahir Johnson and a Aggie turnover, Devin Morgan drained his fourth three-point shot of the game to tie the score at 53-53 with 58 ticks on the second half clock.

The Aggies committed a turnover on their next possession, but the Hornets failed to capitalize when Haywood’s lay-up attempt was blocked by McGowens with 28 seconds left to play.

North Carolina A&T’s Sam Hunt missed the potential go-ahead basket with 16 seconds left, and Tavakalyan grabbed the rebound to give the Hornets a chance for the last shot.

DSU called a timeout to set up the game-winning play.

Morgan led three Delaware State players in double figures with 14 points, highlighted by the four three-pointers. Haywood and Kavon Waller added 12 points each for the Hornets.

Donte Watson came off the bench to lead the Aggies with a game-high 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field, including 4-of-7 on three-point shots. McGowens had 15 points and led all players with 12 rebounds for NCA&T.

The Aggies outshot the Hornets 40.9%-to-36.4%, and also won the rebound battle 43-24. Delaware State committed just seven turnovers, its lowest of the season and fewest since recording six vs. Hampton on Feb. 22, 2016. North Carolina A&T hurt its cause by committing 20 turnovers in the game.

The Hornets will look for a sweep on their two-game Tar Heel State swing to open MEAC play when they visit North Carolina Central on Monday (Jan. 9). Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Durham, N.C.

STINGERS… Morgan has 64 points and 12 three-point field goals in the last three games. He has nailed four triples in each of the last three contests

… DSU is looking for its first 2-0 MEAC start since winning three straight to begin the 2010-11 conference schedule

… Delaware State head coach Keith Walker is 3-0 vs. NCA&T

... The Hornets have won their last two games at NCAT’s Corbett Sports Center

... DSU soph. guard Mahir Johnson came off the bench to score seven points (3-5 FG; 1-2 FT) in his season debut

... This was Delaware State's first win of the season when trailing at halftime (22-25)

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Falls to UNCW 91-81 in Battle of Hot-Shooting Teams
DATE: January 7, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware men’s basketball team finally discovered its offense Saturday night. Unfortunately for the Blue Hens, UNCW never lost theirs.
Delaware poured in its highest scoring output in over a month and shot 60 percent from the field in the second half but it wasn’t enough as the Blue Hens dropped a 91-81 back-and-forth Colonial Athletic Association barnburner at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (7-10, 0-4 CAA), who had failed to reach the 60-point mark in five of the previous six games, fought back to tie the defending CAA champions early in the second half but Delaware couldn’t keep up with the hot-shooting Seahawks on the way to its fourth straight loss.
UNCW (15-2, 4-0 CAA), which won its fourth straight game, shot 57.7 percent from the field for the game (30 of 52), hit on 13 of 21 shots from the field in the second half, and knocked down a season-high 13 of 31 three-pointers for the game as the Seahawks answered every Blue Hen threat in the second half.
Delaware freshman guard Ryan Daly continued his outstanding play as he hit on 10 of 16 shots from the field and finished with a career-high 28 points to go with a team-high six rebounds. He was joined by three other double-digit scorers as Chivarsky Corbett came off the bench to net a season-high matching 18 points, Anthony Mosley scored 15 points and dished out six assists, and Cazmon Hayes contributed 11 points. Daly’s 28 points were the fourth highest single game total ever by a UD freshman.
"I thought we really competed well tonight, and if we compete like that every night, we're going to win some games," Blue Hen head coach Martin Ingelsby said. "We did a good job of handling their pressure, throwing it over the top for some easy baskets. Skye (Johnson) gave us some really important minutes, and Chivarsky (Corbett) really competed. I love the competitiveness and fearlessness of the group tonight. We are close to getting over the hump."
UNCW, which entered the game averaging a CAA-leading 86.6 points per game (13th in NCAA), placed all five starters in double figures as C.J. Bryce connected for a career-high 27 points on 10 of 14 shooting, Denzel Ingram knocked down five treys and finished with 23 points and a game-high eight assists, Devontae Cacok added 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season, Chris Flemmings contributed 12 points, and Ambrose Mosley chipped in with 11 points and five assists.
The Blue Hens scored their highest point total and had their best shooting percentage since an 84-51 win over Bryn Athyn on Nov. 27 in which Delaware shot .586 from the field. Unfortunately the Hens gave up over 90 points for the second straight game after dropping a 90-54 verdict at Northeastern Thursday night.
Opponents continued to be marksmen from long range against the Hens as Delaware allowed UNCW to hit 13 of 31 three-point attempts Saturday night after Northeastern was 21 of 33.
UNCW used a 14-0 run over a span of five minutes in the opening half to take a 33-14 lead but the Blue Hens fought back with a 9-1 run of its own and cut the margin to 40-35 at the break. Delaware came out strong in the second half by making its first seven shots and tying things up at 50-50 on a Daly three-pointer with 16:50 left.
But that would be the last share of the lead the Hens would enjoy all night. UNCW followed with a 10-3 run to go up 60-53 but Delaware fought back by scoring six of the next seven points to pull to within two. But the Seahawks answered with consecutive three-pointers from Ingram and led by at least five points the rest of the way. UNCW knocked down 8 of 15 three-pointers in the second half to keep the Hens at bay.
"Our competitive spirit was a lot higher tonight, we really came together and gave the best team in the league a tough game," said Daly, who has now scored in double figures in eight of the last nine games. "We're not into moral victories, but will use this as a step forward."
HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Delaware placed four scorers in double figures for just the second time this season (four vs. Bryn Athyn)
• The Hens will seek their first CAA victory of the season Jan. 12 when they head to rival Towson
• UNCW now leads the all-time series with Delaware by a 20-11 margin but won for just the second time in the last nine visits to the BCC
• Delaware scored 18 points above its season scoring average of 63.2

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Football Announces 2017 Schedule; Season Tickets on Sale Now
DATE:  January 20, 2017
NEWARK, Del
. -- A renewed enthusiasm surrounds the University of Delaware football program in 2017 as new head coach Danny Rocco begins the quest to bring Blue Hen football back to national prominence.
The Blue Hens learned of its looming battles on Thursday as the complete 2017 schedule, an 11-game slate that features outstanding opponents and longstanding rivalries, was announced. The eight-game Colonial Athletic Association ledger is highlighted by a matchup against defending NCAA national champion James Madison, which visits Delaware Stadium for the CAA opener on Sept. 30 at Delaware Stadium.
Blue Hen fans won’t want to miss a minute of the high-powered action this fall and what better way to guarantee your special spot in Delaware Stadium than by purchasing season tickets for an exciting six-game slate that includes several of Delaware’s biggest rivals.
Delaware will once again open the season against downstate foe Delaware State on Thursday, Aug. 31 at Delaware State followed by a trip to Blacksburg, Va. on Sept. 9 to take on a Virginia Tech team that finished the 2016 season with a 10-4 record and No. 16 NCAA FBS national ranking. The Hens will then return home to close out the non-league schedule with a first-ever meeting vs. Ivy League foe Cornell on Sept. 16.
After a bye week on Sept. 23, Delaware will host James Madison on Sept. 30, travel to Stony Brook for the first time ever on Oct. 7, then return to Delaware Stadium for a two-game home stand with William & Mary on Oct. 14 and 2016 NCAA Tournament qualifier Richmond on Oct. 21. The Richmond game is an intriguing one as Rocco will meet up with the team he coached for the last five years and led to three NCAA playoff appearances.
Delaware will then close out the season Oct. 28 at Towson, Nov. 4 at Maine, Nov. 11 at home vs. Albany, and Nov. 18 at longtime foe and 2016 NCAA playoff qualifier Villanova.
Game times and special events such as Homecoming and Parents and Family Weekend will be announced at a later date.
Delaware Stadium is the place to be on Saturdays during the fall as energetic fans gather to cheer on the Blue Hens and create a festive atmosphere that has few equals nationally at the NCAA FCS level. And whether you come out to support the Blue Hens with your family or with friends, with a large group or small, there is a season ticket package just for you!
Affordable packages start at the low cost of $79 and new pricing in the 50-yard line sections of Delaware Stadium will feature a 29 percent savings over single game prices. In all other remaining sections, the per game price for season tickets will be at least 13 percent lower than they were during the 2016 season.
Season ticket members also enjoy additional benefits such as priority access to away game and post season tickets, access to exclusive season ticket member parking lots, discounts on single game parking lots, invitations to season ticket member exclusive events throughout the year, and a season ticket member benefit card with discounts to Delaware Athletics’ partners in the area.
Discounts to University of Delaware faculty and staff have also been expanded for this season and those UD fans will have the opportunity to take advantage of a 20 percent discount on season tickets in Sections A through N as well as for the Family Five-Pack in the north end zone.
Fans are also reminded that required seat donations that were previously in effect have been removed this fall for all seats in Sections A through N.
Led by Rocco and his high-powered approach, the Blue Hens will certainly be exciting to watch in 2017 backed by one of the nation’s most potent ground games and a defense that returns four All-CAA performers, including homegrown products in linebacker Troy Reeder - one of the top sophomore linebackers in the country a year ago - and defensive tackle Bilal Nichols. The group also includes two-time All-CAA linebacker Charles Bell and one of the league’s top rising starts in cornerback Nasir Adderley.
Deposits for new 2017 football season tickets are available now online at www.udel.edu/003551or by calling 302-831-4493. Renewals for the 2017 season will be available in early February.

SUBJECT: Hofstra Men’s Basketball Uses Big Second Half To Post 73-65 Comeback Win Over Blue Hens
DATE: February 2, 2017
kmt:
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Hofstra erased an 11-point halftime deficit with a 20-2 run early in the second half and held off the Blue Hens down the stretch as the Pride came away with a 73-65 Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball victory over Delaware Thursday night at the Mack Sports Complex.
Delaware (9-15, 2-9 CAA) jumped out to a 35-24 halftime advantage, and the Blue Hens still led 44-37 with 17 minutes to play following a jump shot by Ryan Daly. However the Pride (11-13, 3-8 CAA) took the lead for good by scoring 20 of the next 22 points, taking a 57-46 lead on a Hunter Sabety follow slam at the 9:44 mark.
Hofstra’s lead eventually grew to as much as 12, and the Pride was still up nine before Cazmon Hayes drilled a three-pointer and Chivarsky Corbett converted a three-point play to cut the deficit to 63-60 with 4:27 on the clock.
But Delaware missed its next five shots as Hofstra extended the margin to seven, before a three-point play by Corbett made it 67-63 with 1:16 left. However Pride guard Justin Wright-Foreman knocked down his second straight contested jumper to put Hofstra up six, and the Blue Hens would not get closer the rest of the way.
Daly again led the Blue Hens with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Darian Bryant reached double figures for the third straight game with 11 points to go with five assists. Eric Carter contributed nine points and seven rebounds, while Devonne Pinkard also scored nine points off the bench.
Wright-Foreman scored a game-high 22 points for Hofstra, which put all five starters in double figures. Hunter Sabety notched career-highs of 14 points and 15 rebounds while Eli Pemberton added 12 points, Deron Powers chipped in with 10 points and nine boards, and Brian Bernardi contributed 10 points.
“It was a tale of two halves tonight,” said first year Blue Hen head coach Martin Ingelsby. “I thought we did a great job in the first half, but then gave up some early threes in the second half and allowed them to get confident. We battled back to make it a three-point game, but just couldn’t get stops down the stretch. When we face adversity we have to battle through it; we have to get better in that area and continue to grow.”
Hofstra led by a point at the 8:57 mark of the first half but Delaware erupted to score the next 13 points, taking a 33-19 advantage on an Anthony Mosley jumper with 3:43 on the clock. The Blue Hens held the Pride without a field goal for over seven minutes during the run, and eventually carried a 35-24 lead into the halftime break.
Delaware shot 50 percent while holding Hofstra to just 29.6 percent shooting over the opening 20 minutes, taking a double digit lead into the locker room for the second straight game. However the Pride shot 50 percent and hit 15 of 18 free throws in the final stanza to turn the game around.
The Blue Hens remain on the road on Saturday when they head to Trask Coliseum for a 7 p.m. game with league co-leader UNCW.
Game Notes:
• Delaware dropped its eighth straight road game, and its 14th consecutive CAA road contest
• Hofstra defeated the Blue Hens for the sixth straight meeting, including three in a row in Hempstead
• Daly reached double figures for the 14th time in 16 games
• Daly and Bryant each reached their career-high with five assists
• Wright-Foreman posted his fourth consecutive 20-point effort
• Delaware shot a season-low six free throws, making five, while Hofstra went 20 of 26 from the line
• The Blue Hens held a 28-4 advantage in bench points

SUBJECT: Gearhart, Kolofer, Steinmetz Selected 2017 Delaware Softball Captains
DATE: February 6, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- Blue Hen juniors Leanna Gearhart and Giovanna Kolofer, along with sophomore Anna Steinmetz, have been named University of Delaware softball captains for the 2017 season, UD head coach John Seneca announced Monday.
Gearhart (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) is expected to start at shortstop again for the Blue Hens after earning second team All-Colonial Athletic Association and UD Alumni Association Team MVP honors a year ago. Gearhart, serving as team captain for the second straight year, led the league and ranked eighth in the nation with 44 steals a season ago, and also paced the conference with eight triples.
She set a UD single season mark and led the CAA with 54 runs scored, and was ninth in the league and second on the team with a .343 batting average. Gearhart, who started all 51 games at shortstop and batted leadoff in all but two contests, was also a CAA All-Academic Team selection during her sophomore campaign.
Kolofer (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame HS), a redshirt junior who appeared in the first 15 games last year before suffering a season-ending elbow injury, is also serving as the Blue Hens’ captain for the second consecutive season. Kolofer made 12 of her 14 starts at third base, batting .341 and going 4 for 4 vs. Siena.
Kolofer was a second team All-CAA, CAA All-Rookie Team and Team MVP selection in 2014, when she ranked seventh in the CAA with a .340 batting average. Kolofer moved to second base in 2015, making 37 starts while batting .259 with 21 hits, 21 runs scored and 10 RBI.
Steinmetz (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester Bayard Rustin) was named the 2016 CAA Rookie of the Year during her freshman season, when she earned second team All-CAA and third team NFCA All-Northeast Region honors. She tied for the CAA lead and tied the UD single season record with 15 home runs, tied for fourth most among Division I freshmen.
Steinmetz, who started all 51 games including 36 behind the plate, ranked second on the Blue Hens and fourth in a UD season with 44 RBI. She batted .314 on the year, ranked second on the team with nine doubles and 25 runs scored, and was third with 50 hits.
Delaware kicks off its 2017 season this weekend when the Blue Hens play five games at the USF-Wilson DeMarini Tournament, including contests against nationally-ranked opponents Michigan, Florida and South Florida.

NEWARK, Del
. -- Blue Hen junior pitchers Ron Marinaccio and Nick Spadafino have been named University of Delaware baseball captains for the 2017 season, UD head coach Jim Sherman announced Thursday.
Marinaccio (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) is one of the top pitchers on the 2017 Blue Hens squad. Last season he went 7-4, tying him with Brandon Walter for the team lead in victories. The righty was named Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week last season and was named to the Preseason All-CAA first team.
Spadafino (Dover, Del./Dover) is also one of the top returning pitchers on this years team. Projected to be the Saturday starter, Spadafino provided nice depth out of bullpen a season ago, serving in multiple roles. He picked up five wins and recorded a save.
“It gives me great pleasure to announce our 2017 captains Nick Spadafino and Ron Marinaccio," said Sherman. "They both continue the long tradition of UD captains that demonstrate great character, leadership and dedication. They both realize the tremendous responsibility placed on them to represent our fine university, our players, coaches and our state."
The Blue Hens open the 2017 season in Kissimmee, Fla. where they will participate in the Diamond 9 Sunshine State Games. The four-team tournament features Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Pittsburgh, Big Ten member Ohio State, and Kansas State of the Big 12.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Knock Off Elon in Overtime Battle with 76-74 Men's Basketball Victory
DATE:  February 9, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- Freshman Ryan Daly made sure the Blue Hens made it to overtime and Darian Bryant and Cazmon Hayes sealed the deal in the extra session as the University of Delaware pulled out an entertaining 76-74 Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball victory over Elon in overtime Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Daly, who finished the night with a team-high 18 points, knocked down a jumper just inside the three-point line with just under two seconds left in regulation to knot the score at 59-59 and Bryant and Hayes combined for 11 of the Blue Hens’ 17 points in overtime as Delaware (10-16, 3-10 CAA) snapped a two-game losing streak and beat Elon for the first time in six-all-time meetings.
A strong candidate for CAA Rookie of the Year honors, Daly reached double figures in points for the fourth straight game and also recorded his third double-double of the season thanks to a team-high 10 rebounds. Bryant finished with 14 points on the night while Hayes came off the bench to contribute 13 points and seven rebounds.
Delaware shook off a tough shooting night (28 of 63) by hitting on four of five shots from the field and 7 of 11 from the line in the overtime session. The Hens committed just five turnovers for the game, including just one in the first half.
“Tonight was a great team effort, we had a lot of guys contributing,” said first-year Blue Hen head coach Martin Ingelsby. “We got down four points late in the second half but really executed down the stretch. I’m really proud of our defensive effort. Elon can really shoot it from deep and to hold them to eight three-pointers was huge. Ryan (Daly) is a winner. He wanted the ball and hit as tough a two-point shot as there is to force overtime.”
Elon (15-11, 7-6 CAA), which entered the game tied for third in the jumbled CAA standings, lost its second straight game but had four scorers in double figures as Dainan Swoope netted a game-high 21 points despite second-half foul trouble, Steven Santa Ana added 15 points and 10 rebounds for his second career double-double, Luke Eddy came off the bench to score 14 points and dish out five assists, and Tyler Seibring contributed 12 points and nine rebounds.
The teams met for the first time this season and will stage a rematch Feb. 25 at Elon in the final regular season game for both teams. Delaware heads to James Madison to continue CAA action Saturday afternoon.
The game was tight from start to finish and featured 10 ties and 16 lead changes. Delaware’s biggest lead came in overtime when two free throws by Hayes with nine seconds left gave the Hens, who never trailed in the extra session, a 75-68 lead. The Phoenix hit two three-pointers in the final six seconds, including a Swoope trey at the buzzer, but the Hens stayed in front thanks to seven free throws in extra session.
After a 30-30 halftime tie, Delaware stayed in front barely for most of the second half before a late run pulled Elon ahead. A Santa Ana layup and a free throw Dimitri Thompson gave the Phoenix a 58-55 lead with 1:24 left. Delaware freshman Jacob Cushing answered with a layup with 58 seconds left to cut the lead two 58-57 and Santa Ana hit one of two from the line with 15 seconds left for a 59-57 Elon lead.
Delaware then sent the game into overtime when Daly got the ball just outside the right circle, took a step in and drained the jumper to knot the score at 59-59. Delaware’s Mosley hit two free throws and Bryan followed with a jumper in the first 90 seconds of overtime and Hens didn’t look back.
“We know we have talent,” Daly said. “We had some close games that didn’t go our way earlier in the conference season, so it’s very satisfying to hit big shot after big shot tonight to come away with the win."

HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Delaware has reached 10 wins (10-16) after winning just seven last year and has reached double-figures for the sixth time in the last seven seasons
• Daly leads the Blue Hens in scoring (15.0 ppg), rebounding (7.0 rpg), and three-pointers (44)
• Delaware did not commit its first turnover until the final second of the first half and finished with a season-low five miscues, the lowest total by a UD team since committing four vs. William & Mary last Feb. 6

SUBJECT: Bryant’s Three-Pointer Lifts Delaware Men's Basketball Over James Madison, 58-57, in CAA Thriller
DATE: February 11, 2017
HARRISONBURG, Va.
– Blue Hen sophomore guard Darian Bryant drilled a three-pointer from the left wing with five seconds left before Anthony Mosley came up with a game-clinching steal as the University of Delaware men’s basketball team came away with an exhilarating 58-57 victory over James Madison Saturday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Blue Hens (11-16, 4-10 CAA) controlled most of the game, before the Dukes (7-20, 5-9 CAA) scored nine straight points to go in front 55-52 on a Terrence Johnson three-pointer with 1:02 remaining. Ryan Daly (below) answered with a triple of his own to make it a 55-55 game, but JMU’s Ivan Lukic scored inside to put the Dukes back up a pair of 24 seconds to play.
But Mosley drove the lane before finding Bryant, who buried the game-winning triple with :05.5 on the clock, before Mosley stole the ball from JMU’s Jackson Kent just before the final buzzer to set off the Blue Hen celebration.
“I’m really proud of our group, we took a big punch but guys stepped up and made plays at the end,” said Blue Hen head coach Martin Ingelsby. “We practice those late game situations every week; we didn’t call a time out because we wanted to be unpredictable and Darian hit a big-time shot. We got into a good offensive rhythm in the second half but JMU is a good team and got confident; we just made some huge plays down the stretch. This game really speaks to the growth of our team, and hopefully we can carry it forward.”
Bryant finished with 12 points, reaching double figures for the fifth time in six games, while Daly tied for the team lead with 12 points while grabbing a team-high six rebounds. Eric Carter was the third Blue Hen in double figures with 10 points to go with five rebounds and four assists, while Mosley finished with nine points.
Delaware, which swept the regular season series from JMU, won its second straight game for the first time in CAA play and snapped a 15-game conference road losing skid. The Blue Hens shot 48.1 percent from the floor, including 15 of 25 in the second half, and handed out 14 assists.
Kent scored a game-high 17 points for the Dukes, who dropped their second straight and seventh of their last eight. Ramone Snowden added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Lukic also finished with 12 points. JMU shot 42.0 percent from the field, and was just 2 of 16 from behind the arc.
The Blue Hens jumped out to a 17-8 lead at the 13:21 mark of the first half on a layup by Devonne Pinkard, but then went scoreless for just over five minutes as JMU pulled within a pair. Carter ended the drought with a layup, and even though Delaware continued to struggle offensively, the Blue Hens stayed in front by holding the Dukes without a field goal for over eight minutes.
A Bryant layup put Delaware in front 23-20 with 2:42 on the clock, before JMU scored the final two buckets of the half to take a slim 24-23 advantage over the Blue Hens into the break.
After the teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second period Delaware took control with a 12-point spurt, opening up a 41-30 lead with 11:57 left while holding the Dukes scoreless for nearly six minutes.
Delaware was still up 10 three minutes later before the Dukes used a 9-2 spurt to pull within 49-46 with 4:48 remaining. Bryant answered with a three-pointer to put the Blue Hens up six, and after JMU scored nine straight, Daly and Bryant hit clutch three-pointers in the final 42 seconds to give UD the win.
Delaware will look for its third straight victory on Thursday when the Blue Hens host Drexel at 7 p.m.
Game Notes:
• Delaware snapped a nine-game road losing streak
• Daly has reached double figures in 17 of the last 19 games
• Daly has led or tied for the team lead in scoring during 13 of the last 16 games, and in rebounding during each of the last nine games
• UD’s 57 points allowed were the fewest outside of Newark since the first road game of the year at Bradley
• Delaware improved to 16-12 vs. JMU and broke a two-game losing skid in Harrisonburg
• The Blue Hens swept the season series from the Dukes for the second time in four years

SUBJECT: Late Game Heroics Becoming a Daly Occurrence as Delaware Knocks Off Rival Drexel 68-67 in Men's Basketball
DATE:  February 16, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- Late game heroics are becoming a Daly occurrence for the red-hot University of Delaware men’s basketball team.
As in Ryan Daly.
The Blue Hen freshman guard was sensational - and clutch - once again for Delaware Thursday night as he dropped in a game-high 24 points, including a game-winning three-pointer with just 12 seconds left to play that lifted UD to a 58-57 Colonial Athletic Association victory over rival Drexel at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware (12-16, 5-10 CAA), which ran its win streak to three straight, had just fallen behind 67-65 when Drexel’s John Moran knocked down a triple with 32 seconds left to play. After the Hens called a timeout, they worked the ball around to Daly on the left wing and the CAA Rookie of the Year candidate knocked down the trey to clinch the thrilling win for the Blue Hens.
“I was hoping Ryan would get to the basket, but he rocked his defender back and hit the three,” said Delaware rookie head coach Martin Ingelsby. “He’s a gamer. We knew we’d get the ball in his hands, and he made a big shot. I was then really proud of how we defended at the end, and didn’t let them get off a good shot. This win really shows the growth and character of our team. Our guys enjoy playing together and are now seeing the rewards of it."
Drexel (9-19, 3-12 CAA) had the chance to win it but freshman Kurk Lee’s off-balance three-point attempt under pressure just before the horn was way off the mark, giving the Hens the victory.
Daly scored 18 of his points in the second half and also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to post his fourth double-double of the season and his eighth 20-point effort of the season. Darian Bryant hit on 7 of 10 shots from the field and finished with 15 points while Anthony Mosley added 12 points and a career-high tying seven assists.
Delaware shot 56 percent from the field in the second half (14 of 25), committed just nine turnovers for the game, and forced the Dragons into 20 miscues.
Lee hit five three-pointers and finished with a team-high 21 points off the bench for Drexel while Rodney Williams contributed 17 points and Mohamed Bah came off the bench to pull down a team-high nine boards.
The Blue Hens have now won three straight games and each has come down to the wire. Daly knocked down a jumper with two seconds left in regulation against Elon last Thursday in a game in which the Hens went on to win 76-74 in overtime. This past Saturday, Delaware knocked off James Madison 58-57 on a three-pointer by Bryant with 10 seconds left and a subsequent steal by Mosley just before the buzzer. Daly’s three-pointer with 42 seconds left had tied that game.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Daly broke the UD freshman single season scoring record during the game and now has 412 points this season, surpassing the mark of 411 by Devon Saddler in 2010-11
• Delaware’s starters accounted for 63 of the team’s 68 points and all five players are underclassmen
• Drexel’s 20 turnovers were the most miscues forced by the Hens this season and the most since Elon had 20 vs. the Hens on Feb. 4, 2016
• Delaware improved to 9-4 at home this season and evened its league home mark at 4-4
• Delaware has won three games for the first time since a five-game streak as part of the 2014 CAA championship and NCAA Tournament season
• The game marked the 156th all-time meeting between the two rivals with Delaware now leading 80-76

SUBJECT: Cargile’s Gem Gives Delaware Softball Split During First Day of Orange Blossom Invitational
DATE: February 18, 2017
ORLANDO, Fla
. -- The University of Delaware softball team fell to Marshall 5-2 before responding with a 3-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman as the Blue Hens split their first two games at the Orange Blossom Invitational Friday afternoon at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
In the Blue Hens’ first game of the day, Marshall (4-2) got on the board in the top of the first on an RBI single by Taylor McCord, before Abigail Estrada swiped home during a double steal to give the Thundering Herb a two-run lead in the following frame. However Delaware (1-6) pulled even during the bottom half, as after Devon Steiner walked and Mattie Nuccio singled, both runners crossed the plate on a two-out infield single by Emily Neal.
Marshall went right back in front during the top of the third when Briana Diass doubled home McCord, and after the Herd added a run in the fourth, Shaelynn Braxton drilled a solo homer in the seventh to close the scoring.
Marshall pitcher Jordan Dixon improved to 4-2 in the circle after allowing two runs on five hits in a complete game effort, while UD freshman Kat Morris dropped to 0-3 as she gave up four runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Neal finished 3 for 3 with the two RBI at the plate for the Blue Hens, while Leanna Gearhart and Nuccio added a single apiece.
Delaware then took control early against Bethune-Cookman (1-5) by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Gearhart lead off the game with a walk, and after stealing second, she scored on an RBI single to rightfield by Mariah Kondravy. After Kondravy advanced to second on an Anna Steinmetz single, she came around to score when Giovanna Kolofer stroked a single to center.
The Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI groundout by Bryanna Campos, but Delaware got the run back in the top of the fourth as Kolofer led off with an infield single and eventually scored when Gearhart delivered an RBI double to right.
Blue Hen pitcher Jordan Cargile made the lead hold up, as she gave up just one run on two hits while going the distance to improve to 1-3 on the year. Destiny Enriquez fell to 0-4 for Bethune-Cookman after giving up three runs on seven hits in the complete game effort.
Steinmetz and Kolofer recordedtwo hits apiece to pace Delaware, while Gearhart, Kondravy and Nuccio each contributed one.
Game Notes:
• Cargile fired the first complete game of her career
• Gearhart stole her first base of the season and now has 56 for her career, 10 shy of the UD record
• Kondravy knocked in her 105th career RBI, two away from Lauren Mark’s record of 107
• Delaware fell to 1-6 all-time vs. Marshall, and played Bethune-Cookman for the first time in school history
• The Blue Hens continue tournament action on Saturday by facing Stetson at 3:15 p.m. and George Washington at 5:30 p.m.

“What a battle! Doubles came down to the wire and four of the five three set matches went the distance because we adapted after dropping the first sets. While the loss stings, the reality is that this match has made us better.”

DSU is currently tied with South Carolina State for 12th in the MEAC race, although the Lady Hornets hold the tie-breaker over the Bulldogs as a result of its 72-70 victory at SC State on Jan. 21. Delaware State is coming off a 71-52 loss to Morgan State on Monday. The game was close for three quarters. The Lady Hornets only trailed 31-30 at the half and 44-43 heading into the fourth quarter, but were outscored 27-9 in the final 10 minutes. NaJai Pollard led DSU with 15 points and seven rebounds before fouling out, while Mikah Aldridge came off the bench to add 10 points. Pollard is still on pace for a MEAC “triple crown.” She leads the league in scoring (18.0 ppg), rebounding (9.7 pg) and field goal percentage (.524). Pollard also has a MEAC-high 17 double-doubles to tie for fifth among all NCAA Div. I women’s players. Aldridge is second on the Lady Hornets and fifth in the MEAC in scoring at 13.5 ppg.

UMES (11-13; 5-8 MEAC), tied for ninth in the current MEAC standings, brings a two-game win streak into the contest. The Hawks are coming off a 58-50 home win vs. North Carolina A&T on Monday. UMES led 29-16 at the half and held off a fourth quarter charge by the Aggies. Alexus Hicks led the Hawks with 15 points in the contest, while Moengaroa Subrtizky had 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. UMES outrebounded the Aggies 48-38 in the contest. Subritzky is tops on the Hawks and seventh in the MEAC in rebounding at 7.0 per game. UMES is tops among all MEAC teams in three-point field goals (155) and three-point shooting percentage (.326).

HORNETS vs. Hawks Series History (DSU leads 49-38)
This is the only scheduled contest between the Hornets and Hawks this season. UMES swept two meetings from DSU during the 2015-16 season, winning 70-61 at Delaware State and 54-49 at home in Princess Anne, Md. UMES has won five of the last six games in the series. Courtesy DSU Athletic Media Relations
Fri, February 24, 2017
Dover, Del. (Feb. 24, 2017) --- The Delaware State women’s lacrosse program has announced that six high school seniors have taken advantage of the early signing period to accept offers from the university and compete for the Hornets beginning next season.

“We need to bring in a large class for next year since we will lose six seniors after this season,” said Delaware State Head Lacrosse Coach Kari-Lei Maddox. “We recruited heavily this past off-season to find these talented student-athletes and are excited that they committed early to the university and our program.”

The new Delaware State lacrosse signees include two players from Maryland, two high school teammates from Arizona, and one each from Delaware and Pennsylvania.

Delaware State lacrosse 2017-2018 early signing class

Kennedey Conaway Owings Mills, Md./New Town HS AttackCoach Maddox comments: “Kennedey is a talented attacker with speed and durability. I am excited to see what she can achieve on the field next season. Kennedey will have the chance to show what she can do right away next year since we lose three starting attackers after this season. I believe she will rise to the challenge.”

Margaret Marshall Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS Defender Coach Maddox comments: “Margaret’s been playing high school lacrosse since eighth grade and has been an All-Star the last two seasons. She, too, will have a chance to step in right away next season since we will graduate three starting defenders this year. We are confident she will be up to the task.”

Kristin Moffet Dover, Del./Dover HS DefenderCoach Maddox comments: “We are happy that Kristen has chosen to keep her talents here at home. It’s a boost to our program when local kids choose to join us. She played for my assistant coach Emily Peets when she (Peets) was head coach at Dover High School. We were very excited when Kristin reached out to possibly join our team here at DSU. I believe she will be a solid contributor to our program in the years ahead.”

Katherine Shirley Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS Defender Coach Maddox comments: “ Katherine is listed as one of the top defenders in Arizona and was an All-Star selection as a junior last year. We will need to at the defender position next season and Katherine is more than capable of stepping in and contributing right away. Katherine was super excited when she traveled here for a visit and we are looking for her to bring that excitement to the field for the Hornets. ”

Tamrin Swann Waldorf, Md./St. Charles HS MidfielderCoach Maddox comments: “Tamrin is a three-year varsity letterwinner and outstanding all-around athlete. We hope to utilize her on the attack, run the midfield, or on defense. She will be a great contributor on the field the next four years.”

Portia WigginsCoatesville, Pa./Collegium Charter School Goal Keeper Coach Maddox comments: “Portia was a high school All-America (TCISL) in 2016 and also competed for the SEPA lacrosse club last summer. I believe she will shake things up between the pipes next year. She is really excited to join our program and I am looking forward to seeing her perform at the collegiate level.”

Maddox says she expects to sign additional six 2018 recruits later this year.

Delaware State will begin its fifth season of women’s lacrosse, and first as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, on Mar. 4 at Radford University in Virginia. The Hornets’ 2017 home opener is Mar. 31 against Howard. Game time is 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Dover, Del. (Feb. 26, 2017) --- The defending MEAC champion Delaware State bowling team achieved one of its season goals in its bid for back-to-back league titles. The Hornets clinched the 2016-17 MEAC North championship after winning six of eight matches in the final division competition of the season this weekend.

The Hornets were 3-1 in regular team games and Baker matches to finish divisional play with a 20-4 record this season. DSU’s only losses during the weekend competition were to Maryland-Eastern Shore, which is ranked ninth in the February National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 poll, one spot behind the Hornets in the balloting.

After falling to Maryland-Eastern Shore in Saturday’s regular team play opener (856-954), the Hornets ran off consecutive wins against Morgan State (940-869), Coppin State (933-790) and Howard (946-844).

Individually, senior Amoni Knight had DSU’s best average on the day at 208.0, posting a total pinfall of 624 in three games. Knight had two 200-plus games, including 219 in the Morgan State, tops for the Hornets for the day. The Saturday performance raised her season average to 192.5.

Olivia Laird led the Hornets with a total pinfall of 773 in four games for an average of 193.3. Laird topped the 200 mark in two games, with a high of 206.

In the Baker contests, Delaware State defeated Coppin State in the opening match (1003-773) before falling to UMES (926-973). The Hornets bounced back to defeat Howard (1014-824) and Morgan State (944-857).

The MEAC champion is determined during the annual league tournament. This year’s tournament is set for Mar. 24-26 in Chesapeake, Va.

The Hornets defeated Norfolk State 4-1 to win the 2016 championship, the team’s first since 2010 and third overall.

SUBJECT: Late Rally Pushes Delaware Baseball Past Kentucky 4-3
DATE: February 26, 2017
NORFOLK, Va.
-- Behind an epic four-run eighth inning, the University of Delaware baseball squad defeated Southeastern Conference member Kentucky by a 4-3 score on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Old Dominion Tournament at the Bud Metheny Complex.
“Today’s win was a great comeback for our guys as well as our program,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “We got an outstanding start from [Kevin] Milley, and a pair of lights out relief appearances from [James] Meeker and [Ron] Marinaccio. We got big time hits from [Doug] Trimble and [Nick] Patten. It was great to see our guys come through when we needed it. We played well for the majority of this tournament but we still have things to work on going forward. It’s always easier to end the weekend with a win.”
Trailing 3-0 heading into eighth, the Blue Hens struck for four runs due to timely hitting and a costly throwing error by Kentucky pitcher Logan Sallow.
Sallow’s error gave Delaware (2-5) runners on first and second with one out instead of producing a potential inning ending double play. Following the error, UD received a single from Nick Tierno that loaded the bases and sacrifice fly from Jordan Glover to cut the Kentucky lead to 3-1.
With two outs in the frame, the Hens got back-to-back doubles from designated hitter Doug Trimble and first baseman Nick Patten to take a 4-3 lead. Trimble’s double scored a run and put runners on second and third while Patten’s cleared the bases, plating the tying and go-ahead runs.
In the top half of the ninth inning, Sherman summoned closer Ron Marinaccio, who retired the Kentucky side in order on just 12 pitches, striking out a pair of Wildcat batters.
After Kentucky scored 35 runs and produced 36 hits in its victories against Saint Joseph’s and Old Dominion earlier in the tournament, Delaware starter Kevin Milley and the rest of the Blue Hens staff held the Wildcats (2-6) to just three runs and nine hits on Sunday.
Sunday’s win is the first victory over an SEC opponent for the Blue Hens since Delaware defeated South Carolina in the 1983 NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Hens return to the diamond this weekend where they will host the Bob Hannah Invitational against Rider and in-state rival Delaware State. Friday’s home opener against Rider is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. from Bob Hannah Stadium.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
· Delaware defeated a power five opponent for the first time this season. The Hens defeated Virginia Tech (ACC) and Maryland (Big 10) last season.
· Milley has now produced four straight appearances of six innings or longer dating back to last season. The senior lefty has produced an ERA of 1.98 this season and has produced a 1.67 ERA over his last four starts.
· Marinaccio posted his second consecutive appearance with multiple strikeouts and also picked up his first career save.
· Kevin Mohollen has now reached base safely in all seven games this season.
· Delaware improves to 2-0 this season when leading after eight innings.

DATE: February 26, 2017
CHARLESTON, S.C.
– Behind a career-game from sophomore Nicole Enabosi (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), the Blue Hens grabbed a much-needed win Sunday afternoon by defeating the College of Charleston, 69-56, at TD Arena.
Enabosi registered a career-high 26 points while shooting 10-of-14 from the floor and going a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. The forward added 16 rebounds, which is just one shy of her career-best 17 posted against James Madison on January 13, four assists and two steals in 36 minutes of play.
Seniors Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) and Hannah Jardine (St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada/O’Donel) collected 13 and 11 points, respectively, for Delaware. Brown tied a career-high with nine rebounds while Jardine added five rebounds.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Delaware, who improves to 15-13 overall and 9-8 in the CAA. The Blue Hens have now locked a spot as a No. 4 or No. 5 seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament.
Breanna Bolden tallied 23 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars (9-19, 6-11 CAA) while Courtney Gardner collected a team-high 11 rebounds.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Tina Martin

“I really thought everybody stepped up today. Everyone has been playing their hearts out and I thought they all did an outstanding job. It was nice to see us execute, knock down shots, attack the basket and get on the boards. We really did a good job of taking care of the ball and being patient. This is a big win for us. There are so many good teams in this league that it’s tough to get wins on the road.”
Sophomore Nicole Enabosi
“I have to credit my teammates as I couldn’t have a big game without them. They’re the ones that were passing, cutting and getting the ball to me. We really needed this win. We came in determined and focused and I’m glad we were able to come out with the ‘W.’
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Nicole Enabosi previously recorded a career-high 24 points at Hofstra on January 19.
· Enabosi’s game of 26 points and 16 rebounds was good for her 15th double double of the year and 21st of her career.
· The Blue Hens outrebounded the Cougars, 43-40, and also held advantages in assists (13-10) and blocked shots (5-4).
· Delaware tied a season-high by recording 27 field goals made.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
· Wednesday, March 1 – Towson at Delaware – 7 p.m. – Bob Carpenter Center (Newark, Del.) – SENIOR NIGHT
· March 9-11 – Delaware at CAA Women’s Basketball Tournament – JMU Convocation Center (Harrisonburg, Va.)

Sun, February 26, 2017
Charleston, S.C. (Feb. 26, 2017) --- Freshman Garrett Lawson threw seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five, to highlight Delaware State’s 7-1 victory over the Citadel in the series finale at Joe Riley Park today.

Lawson, a Dover (Del.) High School product, did not allow a hit after giving up a single to the third batter he faced in the game. He retired the side in order in the third, fifth and sixth innings in recording his first collegiate win (1-1).

In his two college starts, Lawson has allowed just three runs, two earned, while striking out nine and walking three in 13.2 innings. Today’s outing dropped his earned run average to 1.32.

Freshman Jared Gillis drove in two runs, while Ciaran Devenney had two hits and a RBI and Evan Regez was 2-for-5 with a run scored to lead the Hornets’ eight-hit attack.

Delaware State opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third inning. Devin Beverly walked to lead off the inning and later scored on an infield single by Kwestin Smith.

The Hornets tacked on three runs in the fifth to stretch their lead.

Austin Bentley singled in a run and Darnel Maisonet brought in a run on a fielder’s choice ground out. DSU scored its third run of the inning on an error by the Bulldogs to open up a 4-0 lead.

The Hornets added three more runs in the seventh to go ahead by seven. The big blow in the inning was a two-out, two-run triple by Gillis, who later scored on an infield single by Devenney.

The Citadel scored its only run of the game off DSU reliever Terry Godfrey in the eighth inning.

In addition to Lawson, Delaware State is getting solid play from fellow freshmen Gillis, Devenney and Tommy Jordan through the first seven games this season.

Devenney is third on the team with a .304 average and is tied for second on the club with four RBI. Gillis is DSU’s fourth leading hitter at .292 and has also driven in four runs. Jordan is fifth on the Hornets with a .280 average.

Delaware State (2-5) is back in action on Fri. (Mar. 3) against Rider at the University of Delaware Bob Hannah Invitational . Game time is 11 a.m. in Newark, Del. The Hornets will also face Delaware on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

DSU’s home opener is Mar. 7 against Towson.

As has become the story this season, junior Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) once again tallied a hat trick and finished the night with team-highs of four points (3g, 1a), four caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Sophomore Megan Santoleri (at left; Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) added a career-best three points on two goals and an assist to go along with two draw controls and a ground ball.

Senior Kirsten Hale (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) also registered two goals in addition to a team-best three draw controls and three ground balls.

Junior goalie Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) picked up eight saves in the loss.

Tessa Chad led Canisius (3-3) with four points on three goals and an assist while Tewaaraton Watch List selection Erica Evans collected three goals of her own. Rebecca VanLaeken recorded nine saves with a team-high three ground balls.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Kateri Linville

“We got off to a slow start and they beat us in some of the battles we’ve been use to winning. We took risks in the second half that allowed us to battle back, but we were just a little too late and fell just a little bit too short. I think the positives are that we had a lot of sparks come in off the bench. I’m glad the team was able to respond and make a comeback in the second half. Those are great and positive character traits, but ultimately we have to win in that pressure situation and that's a painful growing lesson.

HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Becky Gohsler is the first Delaware player to net a hat trick in four straight games since Caitlin McCartney did so to open the 2013 campaign.
· Gohsler has scored at least two goals 13 times in her three-year career, including six straight and in 11 of the last 15.
· Mia DeRuggiero scored her first career goal in the 58th minute. She also collected her first career draw control against Canisius.
· The Griffs take the 2-1 lead in the all-time series with Delaware.
· The Blue Hens held the 12-10 advantage in draw controls while Canisius outshot Delaware, 27-25, and picked up 18 ground balls to UD’s 16.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
· Wednesday, March 8 – Delaware at Monmouth – 6 p.m. – Hesse Field at The Great Lawn (West Long Branch, N.J.)
· Saturday, March 11 – Virginia Tech at Delaware – Noon – Delaware Stadium (Newark, Del.)
· Wednesday, March 15 – Bryant at Delaware – 5 p.m. – Delaware Stadium (Newark, Del.)

SUBJECT: Delaware Softball Falls To Southeastern Louisiana, 9-1, on First Day of Tennessee Invitational
DATE: March 3, 2017
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
-- The University of Delaware softball team opened play at the Tennessee Invitational with a 9-1 loss to Southeastern Louisiana Friday afternoon at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
The Lions (9-10) took control of the contest early, taking advantage of three Blue Hen errors to score six runs in the bottom of the first inning before an out was recorded.
Maddie Edmonston led off with a single, and after she stole second, she scored the first run of the day when Kinsey Nichols reached on an error by UD centerfielder Emily Neal. Kalyn Watts then drove home Nichols with a single, and following another error, Ali McCoy delivered an RBI single to make it a 3-0 game. After another run scored when Mattie Ott reached on a throwing error by shortstop Leanna Gearhart, Mychal Truxillo doubled home two more to put Southeastern Louisiana up six.
Delaware (2-9) got on the board in the top of the second when Sarah Coyne singled to rightcenter to drive home Giovanna Kolofer, but the Lions got the run right back in the bottom half as Watts led off the frame with a home run.
Southeastern Louisiana added two more unearned runs in the fourth inning, and the game ended due to the mercy rule after the Blue Hens went down in order during the top of the fifth.
Rachel Hayes (3-4) allowed one run on three hits to earn the win for the Lions, while UD starter Jordan Cargile (2-5) took the loss after allowing six runs, just one earned, in the first inning.
Delaware continues play at the tournament on Saturday when the Blue Hens face Ohio University at 9 a.m.

SUBJECT: Delaware Softball Falls To Bradley, 15th-Ranked Volunteers at Tennessee Invitational
DATE: March 5, 2017
KNOXVILLE, Tenn
. -- The University of Delaware softball team fell to Bradley, 2-1, and 15th-ranked Tennessee, 10-2 in five innings, on Sunday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium as the Blue Hens concluded play at the Tennessee Invitational.
The Blue Hens’ first game of the day remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when Bradley (11-8) took the lead on a solo homer to centerfield by Kealia Wysocki. However Delaware (2-12) quickly pulled even during the bottom half as Giovanna Kolofer stroked a two-out single to center, stole second, and scored on a double by Alyshia Dellatore.
The Braves went back in front during the top of the sixth as Caitlyn McCarron led off with a triple to center and immediately scored on a wild pitch. Delaware then put two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh, but could not push across the tying run.
Emily Visnic earned the win for Bradley after allowing one run in five innings, while Blue Hen junior Jordan Cargile gave up two runs on four hits in a complete game effort.
The Volunteers then struck first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Chelsea Seggern, but Delaware answered in the top of the second when Devon Steiner belted a leadoff homer to leftcenter. Leanna Gearhart then led off the top of the third with an infield single, and after stealing second, she came around to score on a pair of groundouts to put the Blue Hens in front, 2-1.
But Tennessee would immediately answer during the bottom half, pushing across four unearned runs to take a 5-2 advantage. Meghan Gregg delivered an RBI single during the frame, while Haley Beardon drove home two more with a single as the Volunteers took the lead for good.
Seggern ripped an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning, before Tennessee scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game due to the mercy rule. Gregg singled home a pair during the rally, and after Aubrey Leach scored on a wild pitch, Taylor Rowland singled home the final run.
Gearhart finished 2 for 3 at the plate for the Blue Hens, while Cargile again took the loss after giving up nine runs, five earned, in 4.1 innings of work.
Game Notes:
• Tennessee was the Blue Hens’ fourth ranked opponent of the season
• Delaware was facing Bradley and Tennessee for the first time in school history
• Steiner hit her first career homer as a Blue Hen
• Gearhart stole two bases vs. Tennessee and now has seven on the season, while her 62 career steals are four shy of the school record
• Delaware returns to action next weekend with five games at the UNC Greensboro Spartan Classic.

THE GAME
After a roller coaster regular season, the Hornets (10-21; 7-9 MEAC) are the eighth seed in the 2017 MEAC Tournament. Delaware State has played well enough at times this season to defeat St. John’s of the Big East and post MEAC road wins against regular season champ North Carolina Central and Morgan State. On the other hand, the Hornets were just 4-7 at the home this season (2-6 vs. MEAC opponents). Delaware State ended the regular season with a 66-56 win at home against Howard on Mar. 2. DeAndre Haywood led all players with 20 points in the contest, while DeVaughn Mallory recorded his second double-double of the season, tallying 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Hornets. Sophomore guard Devin Morgan, a 2016-17 All-MEAC Third Team selection, is DSU’s leading scorer this season at 14.7 points per game to rank 13th in the MEAC. Morgan is also among the MEAC leaders in assists and three-point field goals. Haywood is second on the Hornets with an 11.4 point per game average, while Mallory averages 10.2 points per game and is second in the MEAC with a .571 field goal percentage.

Bethune-Cookman (9-21; 6-10 MEAC), enters the MEAC Tournament with wins in two straight and four of its last five games. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a 69-59 victory over Florida A&M last Thursday. Reggie Baker led three BCU players in double figures with 20 points, highlighted by six three-point field goals. Brandon Tabb added 12 points and Quinton Forest 10 (5-6 FGs) in the Wildcats’ regular season finale.

Tabb is a 2016-17 All-MEAC Second Team pick.

HORNETS vs. Wildcats SERIES HISTORY (series tied 35-35 )
Delaware State and Bethune-Cookman met once during the 2016-17 regular season. The Hornets won the contest 88-82 in overtime on Feb. 4 in Daytona Beach, Fla. DeAndre Haywood led four Delaware State players in double figures with 17 points, including his 1000th career point, in the game. Bethune-Cookman’s Quinton Forrest led all players with 28 points (12-19 FG) in the regular season meeting between the teams.

Delaware State and Bethune-Cookman have met three times in the MEAC Tournament, most recently in 2010, a 57-55 quarterfinal win by the Hornets. DSU also defeated the Wildcats 66-43 in the 2005 MEAC Tournament quarterfinals. Bethune-Cookman won the first tournament contest between the teams 64-63 in the 1987 quarters.

The winner of the DSU/Bethune-Cookman contest will face No. 1 seed North Carolina Central on Wednesday (Mar. 8) at 6 p.m.

SUBJECT: Delaware Baseball Uses the Longball to Sweep Rider, Delaware State at Hannah Invitational
DATE: March 6, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- After some early season struggles, the bats came alive for the University of Delaware baseball team Monday as the Blue Hens defeated Rider 8-5 and Delaware State 15-5 in the final day of the Bob Hannah Invitational at Bob Hannah Stadium.
After averaging just 4.1 runs and 9.2 hits per game over the first eight games of the season, the Blue Hens exploded for 23 runs and 19 hits on the way to the sweep. The day's take included five home runs by Delaware.
"Any time you play a doubleheader and win both games it's a good day at the ballpark," Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. "I thought we got some good pitching today, and another quality start from Spads (Nick Spadafino) who struggled a bit, but was still good enough to win for us. The relief pitching did a good job. In the second game [Kevin] Milley wasn't as sharp as he's been, but the pen did a great job. Offensively we surely picked it up and came up with some big hits. Coming into the year we expected to hit the long ball, and we started to do that today. We just have to keep this going tomorrow and this weekend."
On Sunday, Delaware (4-6) managed just three runs on eight hits in falling to the Rider by a 4-3 score in the opening round of the Hannah Invitational. But Monday morning was different story as the Blue Hens tagged Rider (3-5) for eight runs on seven hits.
After Spadafino allowed a two-run home run to designated hitter Riley Mihalik in the first inning, Nick Patten gave UD the lead for good when he connected on a three-run home run to left, his first longball of the season. Patten went 2 for 2 for the day, stole a base, and scored three runs.
The Hens added two runs on a double by Jeremy Ake in the third and two more runs in the fifth inning.
Delaware received solid performances out the bullpen from Cole Benjamin, Colman Vila and Kyle Hinton. Spadafino (1-0) picked up the win as he allowed three hits and four runs in five innings of work.
Vila retired the final two batters in the eighth inning while Hinton pitched a scoreless ninth, earning his first save of the season.
In the nightcap, the Blue Hens continued to find success at the plate, connecting on four home runs and 11 hits to defeat Delaware State (2-7).
"Glover, Trimble and Patten are our main power guys," said Sherman. "When those guys are driving the ball, we have way more opportunities to have crooked numbers and big inning. Those guys did that today. Calvin Scott is also swinging the bat well so we're happy for him because he's really waited his turn. Those four guys coming on is a good sign for us as we move on to tomorrow."
Senior Jordan Glover connected on a two-run moonshot in the first before adding another home run over the wall in the left-center field gap in the six.
Left-handed pitcher Kevin Milley didn’t allow a run in the first three innings and the Blue Hens struck for six runs in the third behind an RBI double from Doug Trimble, a two-run single from Patten, and a three run homer from third baseman Diaz Nardo to extend the lead to 8-0 after three.
The Blue Hens continued to be aggressive at the plate, adding a pair of runs on Brian Mayer’s two-run shot in the fifth, and another run in the sixth on Glover’s second round-tripper of the game.
The Hens added four runs in the eighth, three of which scored on a bases clearing double by Scott.
Out of the bullpen, Delaware received solid pitching from Scott Zimmer, who pitched two and two thirds scoreless innings earning his first career win. In addition to Zimmer, the Hens got solid outings from Burk FitzPatrick and Vila.
The day marked the first time since last March that Delaware swept a doubleheader.
The Blue Hens return to action Tuesday afternoon when Delaware hosts UMBC at 2:30 p.m. Left-hander Matt Hornich will start for Delaware.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Glover reached base safely in all five of his plate appearances vs. Delaware State and raised his batting average from .219 to .265
• Patten went a combined 3-6 in Monday’s double-header. He added his first home run of the season, scored five runs, drove in six, and raised his batting average nearly 50 points.
• Nick Tierno has now thrown out five base runners in his six starts behind the plate. Tierno threw out a runner from his knees vs. Rider
• Freshman Jordan Hutchins earned his first career start at shortstop in the finale vs. Delaware State and connected on his first career hit leading off the fourth
• Kevin Mohollen had his eight-game on-base streak snapped in the opener
