(Dover, Del.) – Looking to rebound from a 5-25 (2-13 MEAC) mark last season, the Delaware State women’s basketball team were picked to finish 13th (57 points) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Poll, whereas forward Amber Bogard received Third Team All-MEAC honors.
The Lady Hornets are set to return seven letterwinners from last season, while welcoming five newcomers. Appearing in all 30 games last season, including 24 starts, Bogard finished second on DSU in scoring (13.1 ppg) and field goal percentage (.503). Bogard also led the Lady Hornets in total blocks (36), in addition to setting a school single-game record for most blocks (7) in DSU’s season-ending double digit loss to No. 4 Norfolk State in the MEAC Tournament.
A new, yet familiar face in Barbara Burgess enters her first season as the head coach for her alma mater, after spending the previous six seasons as an assistant coach MEAC powerhouse Hampton. Listed as one of two players in DSU all-time history to total at least 1700 points, 800 rebounds and 70 blocks, Burgess (1985-89) will look to turn around a program that has gone 11-37 in MEAC play and 23-67 overall the past three seasons.
North Carolina A&T totaled 310 points and 10 first-place votes to earn the top spot. Last year, the Aggies finished third in the conference with a 12-4 mark and a 20-11 overall record. The Aggies return three starters from last year’s team with the addition of four newcomers.
Hampton was picked to finish second with 307 points and 10 first-place votes. The Lady Pirates recorded a 19-13 overall record and a 14-2 mark in MEAC play. Hampton received a bid to the Women’s NIT last season and defeated Drexel, 45-42, in the opening round before concluding the season with a loss to West Virginia in the second round.
Maryland Eastern Shore (259 points) received three first-place votes and was predicted to finish third, while Savannah State (239) - the 2015 MEAC Tournament champions - garnered one first-place vote and Norfolk State (225 points) rounded out the top five preseason predictions.
Bethune-Cookman was chosen to finish sixth, followed by Coppin State (180 points), South Carolina State (162 points), Morgan State (138 points), Florida A&M (119 points), Howard (89 points), North Carolina and Central (69 points).
Crowned as the MEAC Player of the Year, meanwhile, was Hampton standout Malia Tate-DeFreitas.
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will tipoff the regular season at West Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 14.
