Tue, January 19, 2016
Savannah, Ga. (Jan. 18, 2016) --- Delaware State continued its road woes this season, falling to Savannah State 64-47 in a MEAC contest at Tiger Arena this evening.

The Hornets dropped their third straight game to fall to 1-16 overall and 0-3 in the MEAC this season. DSU also fell to 0-13 on the road this year.

Savannah State, which never trailed in the contest, won for the third time in four games to improve to 7-9 and 3-2.

Christopher Martin led three SSU players in double-figures with a game-high 16 points, highlighted by four three-point field goals. Lenjo Kilo recorded a “double-double” with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Troyce Manassa had 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Tigers. Manassa also knocked down four three-point shots.

Freshman Devin Morgan led Delaware State in scoring for the third straight game with 15 points, while DeAndre Haywood had 12 for the Hornets.

Once again, DSU was plagued by a poor start. The Hornets committed turnovers on their first three possessions and missed their first six shots from the floor, leading to a 16-2 deficit.

Delaware State trailed 19-11 when the Tigers started a 10-3 run to open up their largest first half lead. Manassa drilled his fourth three-pointer of the half to give Savannah State a 29-14 lead with 1:41 to go before intermission.

The Hornets trailed 29-16 at the break. It was their second-lowest first half point total this season. DSU had 15 point s in the first half vs. Old Dominion on Dec. 4.

Savannah State led by 24 points on three occasions in the second half. The closest Delaware State could get the rest of the way was 59-45 after two free throws by Haywood with 1:25 left to play.

The Hornets were 15-for-42 from the field (35.7%), including just two-of-16 on three-point shots (12.5%).

Savannah State shot 44% from the field (22-for-50), including nine-of-23 from beyond the arc (39.1%).

The Tigers won the rebound battle 34-25, marking the 16th time in 17 games that the Hornets have been outrebounded.

Delaware State will have little time to rest before their next action. The Hornets will complete a suspended game against Howard on Wed. (Jan. 20) at 4:30 p.m. in Memorial. Howard was leading 41-38 when the game was halted with 15:41 left in the second half on Jan. 11.

Dover, Del. (Feb. 22, 2016) --- Delaware State cut a 20-point second half deficit to five before running out of gas in an 82-72 loss to defending MEAC champ and current league leader Hampton in Memorial Hall this evening.

The Pirates won their third in a row and fifth in the last six games to improve to 16-9 overall and 11-2 in the MEAC. The loss snapped a season-best three-game win streak for the Hornets, who fell to 7-21 and 5-8.

The loss overshadowed a career performance by DSU freshman guard Devin Morgan, who led all players with 31 points, a single-game high for the Hornets this season.

Hampton’s Quinton Chievous recorded a double-double, tallying 21 points (7-13 FGs) and topping all players with 19 rebounds.

Reginald Johnson added 16 points, while Brian Darden contributed 11 and Dionte Adams 10 for the Pirates.

Hampton never trailed in the contest. The Pirates jumped out to a 16-6 lead on a three-point play by Adams and held its biggest first-half lead, 36-18, after a lay-up by Akim Mitchell with 39 seconds to go before the break.

Delaware State hit just eight-of-29 first-half shots (27.6%), including two-of-10 from three-point territory, to key a 36-20 deficit at the half

The Pirates opened up their biggest lead, 45-25, on two free throws by Adams at the 15:54 mark of the second half.

The Hornets trailed 57-38 before mounting a furious charge over the next five minutes.

Kavon Waller (four points) capped off a 21-7 DSU rally with a three-pointer to cut the Pirates’ lead to 64-59 with 5:44 left to play.

Morgan scored 15 points during the spurt, highlighted by three three-pointers.

Chievous hit two free throws and a lay-up on Hampton’s next two possessions to stretch the Pirate lead to 68-59.

The Hornets pulled to within five points again, 69-64, on a free throw by Joseph Lewis with 3:07 remaining, but could get no closer the rest of the way.

Delaware State outscored the Pirates 52-46 in the second half, highlighted by 17-of-33 shooting from the field (51.5%), including six three-pointers in nine attempts.

Lewis (12 points) and DeAndre Haywood (11) were the only other Hornets to reach double figures in scoring.

Hampton, the MEAC’s top rebounding team entering the contest, won the battle of the boards 48-28. The Pirates collected 16 offensive rebounds, resulting in 17 points.

Delaware State begins a two-game road swing on Saturday at UMES. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Princess Anne, Md. (Dover, Del.) – Despite freshman standout NaJai Pollard tallying her second-straight double-double (21 points – 10 rebounds), in addition to holding Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) leading scorer Malia Tate-DeFreitas (20.4 ppg) in check for most of Monday evening’s contest, the Delaware State women’s basketball team (8-18, 5-8 MEAC) suffered a 63-54 home loss to the Hampton Pirates (12-14, 10-3 MEAC).

With this defeat, the Lady Hornets fell to the Pirates for the 15th consecutive time, whereas Hampton bounced back from a surprising four-point (68-64) loss at Coppin State on Saturday to keep pace with North Carolina A&T and Morgan State for the top spot in the MEAC standings.

The first half featured both teams struggling offensively going a combined 14-of-51 (.274), along with each squad flip-flopping single-digit outputs in the first and second quarters. The Pirates, meanwhile, forced 18 DSU turnovers resulting in eight points, but the Hornets thankfully only trailed by four (21-17) at the break.

After intermission, the Lady Hornets found themselves down by seven twice to begin the third quarter. However, four consecutive points by Pollard sparked an 8-0 run to give DSU its second of the lead night (27-26), at the 5:53 mark after an Aaliyah Davis deuce. Hampton, on the other hand, regained the lead on its next possession with a put-back Kaylah Lupoe layup after the Lady Hornets had two tries to send the possession the other way.

The rest of the night, the Pirates never relinquished the lead again. In the fourth quarter, DSU was outscored, 26-20, headlined by Tate-DeFreitas scoring 13 of her 17 points (5-of-21) in the final 10 minutes. Backcourt mate K’Lynn Willis chipped in by scoring 11 of her game-high 22 points (6-of-17) during this stretch, whereas six of DSU’s costly 28 turnovers down the stretch were too much to overcome.

At game’s end, Pollard’s performance resulted in her team-leading sixth double-double of the season, along with totaling two assists, two steals and a game-high four blocks. Pollard also went 9-for-11 (.818) from the charity stripe to lead all players. The only other Lady Hornet to score in double figures was guard N’Kayah Kersey with 11 points (3-of-7), highlighted by draining two treys.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will hit the road for the final time, beginning this Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) against rival UMES. Earlier this season, the Hawks pulled off a comeback 70-61 victory at Memorial Hall on Feb. 13. Two days later, DSU will seek revenge against the Pirates in hopes of its first win over HU since a 58-36 home victory on Feb. 9, 2008.

Tue, February 23, 2016
(Wilmington, N.C.) – Playing a total of five games over the course of a three-day stretch, the Delaware State softball team (2-3) opened its 2016 campaign with a pair of victories over the Rhode Island Rams (1-4), but dropped two games to weekend host UNC Wilmington (7-2), in addition to a single contest to the Lafayette Leopards (2-3) in the Lafayette Ford Lincoln of Fayetteville Showcase.

Below is a breakdown of each game:

Game 1: Delaware State 1 – UNC Wilmington 7

A four-run outburst by UNCW in the second inning that made it a 5-0 ball game turned out to be too much for DSU to overcome. Hornet starter Tara Tursellino (0-1) allowed five hits, five runs and two walks in 1.1 innings of work before getting replaced by sophomore Jessica Shalongo. The lone bright for DSU offensively was infielder Chloe Oro going 2-for-3, along with driving in outfielder Nicole Gazzola in the third for the team’s lone run.

Game 2: Delaware State 3 – Rhode Island 2

Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, DSU scored two runs off two critical Rhode Island miscues, sparked by Gazzola totaling one of her weekend’s seven stolen bases after reaching on error to begin the frame. Later in the inning, catcher Sandy Hawthorne registered her third hit of the game, this time to drive in Gazzola and Oro (single) with single to left with the help of an error by Rams left fielder Paige Julich. DSU registered nine hits, included sophomore Haley Jones and Gazzola totaling two each. In the circle, junior Nicole Brock (1-0) surrendered five hits, two walks, no runs after the third inning and fanned four Rhode Island batters to pick up the win.

Game 3: Delaware State 3 – Lafayette Leopards 10

The Hornets maintained a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third, thanks to infielder Jordan Stamps scoring on an error in the second and senior Rochelle Sablay driving in Gazzola earlier in the frame with a single up the middle. However, the Leopards knotted it up with a three-run output, highlighted by Shalongo allowing a two-run RBI-single to Samantha Sweigart. Two innings later, Oro notched a two-out triple, followed by Hawthorne driving her in with a single up the middle to make it a three all contest. However, the Leopards blew the game open in the fifth scoring three runs on four hits, followed by a four-run explosion in the sixth. Picking up the loss for DSU was freshman Alexis Goldsby (0-1), allowing three earned runs and three hits in 2.2 innings of work in a relief appearance.

Game 4: Delaware State 11 – Rhode Island 2 (Five Innings)

DSU’s five-inning shellacking over the Rams featured three Hornets totaling two hits, along with Tursellino (1-1) picking up her first victory surrendering five hits, two walks, no earned runs and tallying four K’s. The first inning saw the Rams commit four of their seven errors on the day, resulting in DSU scoring six runs. Turning in her best outing at the plate throughout the weekend was sophomore Mika Lumsden going 2-for-2 with two RBI, a walk and a run scored.

Game 5: Delaware State 0 – UNC Wilmington 4

The DSU offense totaled just one hit to conclude the weekend against UNCW, thanks to Haley Lenderman (3-0) fanning two Hornet batters in five innings of work to secure the shutout victory. At the plate, UNCW scored a pair of earned runs off Brock (1-1) in the first and reliever Tursellino in the fifth. DSU’s lone bright spot offensively was Sablay registering a double in the fifth.

Coming Up Next…

The Hornets will be back in action this weekend to take part in the Charleston Southern Tournament for another five-game stretch. Along with facing weekend host Charleston Southern twice, DSU will take MEAC foe Savannah State (once) and UT Arlington (twice).

MBB: HAMPTON CLINCHES MEAC REGULAR SEASON TITLE WITH WIN OVER HORNETS

Tue, March 01, 2016
Hampton, Va. (Feb. 29, 2016) --- Delaware State suffered a more than five-minute second half field goal drought , enabling Hampton to open up a double-digit lead in its 79-65 win over the Hornets on Senior Night at the HU Convocation Center Monday evening.

The win clinched the 2015-16 MEAC regular season title for the Pirates, who will be seeking their second straight conference tournament championship next week.

Hampton also completed a season sweep of the Hornets to improve to 18-9 overall and 13-2 in the MEAC.

Delaware State dropped its third game in a row to fall to 7-23 and 5-10.

Hampton’s Quinton Chievous led all players with 29 points on 13-for-17 shooting from the field, and 14 rebounds. In two games against DSU this season, he has tallied 50 points and 33 boards.

Lawrence Cooks added 16 points, while Reginald Johnson had 16 and Brian Darden 15 for the Pirates.

DeAndre Haywood was high scorer for Delaware State with 18 points on eight-of-14 shooting from the field, while Devin Martin added 11 points and a team-high three assists for the Hornets.

DSU trailed 16-7 early in the contest, but outscored the Pirates 28-10 over a 10-minute stretch of the first half to also build a nine-point lead. Mrdjan Gasevic capped off the rally with a follow-up basket to give the Hornets a 35-26 lead with 1:58 to go before halftime. The first half run was keyed by the play of the Hornet reserves, who combined for 24 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Hampton scored the last five points of the half to cut Delaware State’s lead to 35-31 at the break.

After missing eight of their first 10 shots from the field, the Hornets hit 12 of their last 21 to close out the half.

Delaware State hit the first basket of the second half to open up a 37-31 lead.

Hampton responded with a 9-0 run, and pulled ahead 40-37 on a put back by Chievous with 15:09 left in the game.

The Pirates led 44-39 when the Hornets pushed back. Morgan capped off an 11-4 run with a three-pointer to give DSU a 50-48 lead with 10:28 remaining.

It would be Delaware State’s last field goal for the next five-minutes-25 seconds. By the time Joe Lewis hit the next Hornet shot from the floor, a three-pointer, Hampton had opened up a 63-52 lead.

DSU pulled to within six points on a Haywood lay-up with 3:30 remaining, could get no closer the rest of the way.

The Hornets will wrap up the 2015-16 regular season at home against Coppin State on Thursday (Mar. 3). Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall following the DSU/Coppin St. women’s contest. Delaware State’s men and women basketball seniors will be honored between games.

NORFOLK, Va. - Christopher Martin never got stressed during Monday's opening round game against with Delaware State at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.

Even with the 12th seeded Hornets shooting lights out and on the precipice of pulling off a Lakerish upset, Martin knew the fifth-seeded Tigers could regain control and pull off the 63-58 victory by doing what the Tigers do all year.

“We knew we could grind it out,” said Martin, who finished with a game-high 21 points. “We stuck together like brothers, stuck with the game plan and found a way to win.”

With their eighth win in their last nine games, The Tigers (15-14) advanced to a Thursday night quarterfinal meeting with fourth-seeded Bethune-Cookman. Delaware State ends its season 7-25.

While Martin posted his second 20-point night of the season, and also matched his output of the last three games, this night belonged to the Tiger defense, which held the Hornets to 27.3-percent shooting (6-of-22) in the second half after getting torched for 57-percent the opening 20 minutes.

After Lenjo Kilo (10 points, 12 rebounds) hit a jumper with 2:21 left that made it 59-58, the Tigers held the Hornets scoreless the rest of the way. All they needed was a pair of free throws from both Troyce Manassa (13 points) and Martin to preserve the win.

“We just started trying to guard people,” said Savannah State coach Horace Broadnax. “The guys picked it up a little bit and started playing some defense.”

Even after seeing a 42-31 lead fade, Delaware State made one last stand down the stretch and had a pair of six points leads.

A Martin lay-up gave Savannah State a 52-51 lead, then after a Delaware State three-pointer, Kamil Williams hit a wide open three in transition that made it 55-53 with 3:57 left.

“That’s when I knew we had a chance to win,” Kilo said.

Dana Raysor’s three with 2:45 left gave the Hornets their final lead of the game at 58-57.

Raysor had eight of his 13 in the first half as Delaware State led by 12 points on three first-half occasions. The Hornets settled for a 37-29 halftime advantage.

“This is one of those games you hate to end a season on,” said Delaware State coach Keith Walker. “We played well enough to win, but we had execution issues – a few missed shots and a couple of turnovers-- that made the difference.”

Kavon Waller led the Hornets with 15 points, DeAndre Haywood added 10.

Wed, March 23, 2016
Phila., Pa. (Mar. 23, 2016) --- Delaware State led 5-2 before giving up four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 6-5 loss to La Salle at Hank DeVincent Field today. The Explorers scored the last six runs of the game after the Hornets led 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

The tying and go-ahead runs crossed the plate on a two-run homer by La Salle’s Ethan Springston off DSU reliever Darnel Maisonet with two outs in the seventh. Maisonet was the last of six pitchers to see action for the Hornets in the contest.

La Salle (7-14) also took advantage of two Delaware State errors in the seventh. The Hornets committed four errors in the contest.

Delaware State (2-17) opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. The rally began when Cameron Onderko drew a walk with two outs and bases empty. Austin Bentley followed with a single to center, giving the Hornets runners at second and first. After the runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, Jake Bartlett stroked a single to right field, sending Onderko and Bentley home with the first two runs of the game.

After DSU starter Jaylen Zielecki retired the Explorers in order in the bottom of the first, two by strikeout, the Hornets tacked on three runs in the second.

Evan Regez singled to lead off the second and scored on a two-out double by Todd Henry to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. Maisonet followed with his first career homer, a two-run shot over the right field fence, to stretch the Hornets’ lead to 5-0.

La Salle answered with a run off Zielecki in the bottom of the second to cut the DSU lead to four.

The Explorers added a run in the third off Hornet reliever Gabe Rivera to pull to within 5-2.

Tue, April 19, 2016
Piscataway, N.J. (Apr. 19, 2016) --- Delaware State tied its season-high in hits and played an error-free game, but it was not enough as the visiting Hornets fell to Big 10 Rutgers 12-8 at Bainton Field today.

The Scarlet Knight scored five runs in the sixth inning to snap a 6-6 tie, and held on for its 17th win of the season (17-19). The Hornets fell to 9-27.

Tom Marcinzyk and Kyle Walker drove in three runs each to lead Rutgers’ 12-hit attack.

Austin Bentley was three-for-five with three runs batted in, while Darnel Maisonet had four hits and a RBI in five at-bats for the Hornets. DSU’s 16 hits tied its high for the season. Delaware State also had 16 base knocks in a 9-5 win at Norfolk State on Mar. 19.

Rutgers opened the scoring with two runs off Hornet starter Cole Davis in the bottom of the first inning.

DSU answered with a pair of runs in the third to tie the game. Todd Henry and Kwestin Smith had back-to-back singles with one out to give the Hornets runners at second and first. Maisonet followed with an infield single. Henry scored on the hit, while Smith and Maisonet advanced to third and second, respectively, on a throwing error on the play.

The Hornets grabbed a 4-2 lead when Henry singled in Chris Panzarella and Evan Regez in the fourth.

Rutgers wasted little time in regaining the lead. The Scarlet Knights out four runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth to open up a 6-4 lead. Walker had a two-run double for the big hit in the inning.

DSU got one run back in the fifth. Panzarella singled with two outs in the bases empty. He stole second and later scored on a Rutgers error to pull the Hornets to within a run.

Delaware State scored in the sixth when Smith singled to lead off the inning and crossed the plate on a two-out single by Bentley to tie the game at 6-6.

Rutgers answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Marcinzyk struck the big blow in the inning, tripling in three runs off DSU reliever Gabe Rivera to give the Knights a 9-6 lead. Rutgers plated two more runs in the inning to open up an 11-6 lead.

The Scarlet Knights opened up a 12-6 lead when Walker drove in his third run of the game on a sac fly in the seventh.

Delaware State rounded out the scoring with two runs in the eighth. Maisonet had a one-out single and Rich Rountree followed with a double to put runners at third and second. Maisonet scored on a groundout by Bentley and Rountree crossed the plate on a double by Niko Cribb to cut Rutgers’ lead to 12-8.

Smith was three-for-five at the plate, while Henry had two hits and two RBI in six at bats for DSU.

Rutgers reliever Reed Shuttle (1-2) was the winning pitcher, while Terry Godfrey (0-1), the third of eight DSU hurlers, was tagged with the loss.

The Hornets return to MEAC action with a three-game series at UMES this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at noon.

Delaware State is second in the MEAC North standings with a 9-5 record, one game behind first plate Norfolk State.

SOCCER: KORTNEY RHOADES TABBED AS NEW HORNET WOMEN担 SOCCER HEAD COACH
Courtesy DSU Athletic Media Relations
Wed, July 20, 2016
(Dover, Del.) – Delaware State University officially announced the hiring of Kortney Rhoades as its new women’s soccer head coach Wednesday afternoon, making her the sixth coach of the program’s15-year existence.

“I’m super excited for the opportunity to come to DSU,” said Rhoades, who comes over from Division II Colorado Mesa after spending two seasons as an assistant coach. “I get to come home and I think if anything, the biggest draw is that I get to bring my experiences from South Carolina where I played and Colorado Mesa. You can’t really beat that.”

Athletic Director Louis “Skip” Perkins, meanwhile, is thrilled about what the Wilmington, Del., native will bring to the table both now and for the future of the program.

“We’re really excited that Kortney is here at DSU. Her enthusiasm and energy combined with the experience she has a player and coach will definitely enhance our program going forward.”

At just age 26, Rhoades is not nervous at all for the opportunity, but more so grateful with what it has presented.

“The fact that Mr. Perkins was able to take a chance on a young coach just speaks volumes to the department. I’m pretty confident in myself and I’ve been a part of high level programs when I played at South Carolina and then semi-pro in Ottawa. I’ve seen enough of the game and I’ve had enough experiences with different coaches that shows that I’m ready.”

Rhoades replaces DSU’s all-time wins leader (15) in Kerri Scroope, who was named the head coach at Pacific back in February. In three seasons under Scroope, the Hornets enjoyed the most success in program history, highlighted by back-to-back Independent Conference Tournament championships the previous two seasons. In 2015, the Hornets set program single-season best marks for most wins (8), victories in a row (4), games played (20), goals (36), points (91), shots (235) and shots on-goal (110).

“My goal is to continue the growth that Coach Scroope was able to do while she was here,” said Rhoades. “From what I’ve seen, we already have a good program here and my expectation would be to just keep growing it and get that Del. State name out there more than just the Tri-State area.”

Topping the list of returners for the Hornets heading into 2016 include second-leading scorer Bri Musco, along with sophomore Taylor Love and senior Elise Pratt. Coming back also is junior goalkeeper Michele Lammers, who totaled the most shutout victories (5.2) and collected the seventh most saves (86) in DSU single-season history.

“My expectations for the returners are going to be high because of the back-to-back Independent Conference Tournament championships that they’ve won,” said Rhoades. “Having these juniors and seniors that have experienced the lows and now also the highs is going to be crucial. I expected a lot of leadership out of them with the nine newcomers we have coming in.”

Rhoades’ playing career includes starring at Padua Academy, where she was a four-time All-State selection and led her squad to a pair of state titles. Her prep career also featured a stint with the FC Delco Fury club team. Serving as a team captain for three seasons, she helped the squad win an astonishing six EPYSA State Cup titles.

Collegiately, Rhoades played her freshman season at St. Joseph’s, appearing in 17 games and making 13 starts as a midfielder. She managed to total three goals and a team-leading four assists for 10 points.

Despite her early success, Rhoades transferred to the Southeastern Conference’s South Carolina, where she made an immediate impact. Appearing in all 25 games, including making 24 starts in her first season, Rhoades registered three goals and two assists for eight points, as the Gamecocks went to win their first-ever SEC Tournament title. That season also featured the Gamecocks reaching the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament to round out the best season in program history. Rhoades went on to serve as a team captain during her senior in 2011, as the Gamecocks won their lone regular season SEC Championship.

Rhoades also garnered a plethora of academic honors while receiving her bachelor’s degree in Public Health, highlighted by receiving Third Team All-Nation Consortium for Academics and Sports honors in 2011 as the only soccer SEC player to make the list.

“One of my best attributes is that I played at a level that not everyone gets to play at. I experienced winning championships, playing in the NCAA Tournament and going to the Sweet 16. Getting that experience as a player I can say this is what I did and this is what it took to get there.”

Rhoades’ coaching background also includes serving as a student assistant with South Carolina in 2012, in addition to a similar role with Padua Academy before heading to Colorado Mesa.

Hamden, Conn. (Sep. 4, 2016) ---Delaware State scored on two of its three shots on goal, but it was not enough in a 6-2 loss at Quinnipiac to wrap up a two-match road swing this afternoon. The Hornets split the two contests to stand at 1-4 this season, while Quinnipiac improved to 3-1-1.

The Bobcats scored two goals in the first 10 minutes to key today’s win. Sarah Pandolfi had two goals and an assist to lead Quinnipiac.

Kayleigh Leschinski (so.) scored for the second straight match and Savannah Taylor (so.) notched her second career goal to account for DSU’s scoring.

Quinnipiac opened the scoring when Nadya Gill fired a shot past Hornet goal keeper Michele Lammers off passes from Pandolfi and Jillian Consolini in the fourth minute.

The Bobcats pulled ahead 2-0 on a goal by Jess Fontaine in the 10th minute.

Delaware State got on the board when Leschinski scored on a free kick from 25 yards out in the 12th minute. She now has two career goals, one in each of the last two matches.

Quinnipiac answered with two straight goals, including Pandolfi’s first of the match, to open up a 4-1 lead.

The Hornets scored again in the 35th minute when Toni Washington assisted on Taylor’s goal, a left-footed shot past Bobcat keeper Charlotte Edmunds, to pull to within 4-2.

Pandolfi scored her second goal in the first two minutes of the second period to give Quinnipiac a 5-2 lead.

The Bobcats closed out the scoring in a goal by Katrina Friedman in the 76th minute.

Delaware State has scored four goals in the last two contests.

The Hornets return home for their next contest on Sep. 14 against St. Peter’s. The match starts at 6 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Tennis Set to Compete in its Ninth Straight CACC Tournament

A Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a very different feel for Goldey-Beacom is on tap with the squad looking to fulfill some lofty goals.

GBC is in the semifinals on Saturday at 10:00 am and will face the winner of Tuesday’s first-round match between fourth-seeded University of the Sciences and No. 5 seed Philadelphia U. The winner of that semifinal takes on the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 seed Wilmington (DE) and third-seeded Post in the final Sunday at 1:00 pm.

The semifinals and final will take place on the campus of Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. The conference champion earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, which begins in late April.

The Lightning’s ninth straight trip to the conference tournament features the squad as the top seed for the first time in school history. The 7-0 conference record is the best in team history and the 7-0 overall mark entering the week is the best since opening a team-record 8-0 in 2010-11.

GBC once again has received exceptional play from senior Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany), whose leadership and solid play has catapulted her to a 7-0 singles record and a 7-0 mark at first doubles. The league’s Student-Athlete of the Month for September, Sengl last year received the conference’s Women’s Tennis Top XV Award for having the best GPA among those participating at the league championship.

Sengl enters the week with 40 doubles wins that put her fourth in school history and 38 singles victories that are good for fifth in team annals.

Sengl shares her doubles record with senior Francesca Beg (Westbury, England), who also has had a solid run with the Lightning. She has a 6-1 singles record this fall, including 3-0 at second singles.

It was Beg who in 2015 won the clinching match against Chestnut Hill that secured Goldey-Beacom’s 5-3 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the first such head-to-head win by any team in school history. GBC ended that season ranked 31st in the country and with a school-record 18 victories.

Freshmen also have played a big part in the Lightning’s success this season. Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) sports a 6-0 singles mark that includes 4-0 at fourth singles and has teamed with Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) to amass a 5-0 record at third doubles. The latter also is 6-0 in singles with a 4-0 mark at No. 6 singles.

Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) has a 5-1 singles mark that includes 4-0 at No. 2 singles and Lea Schmuecker (Marburg, Germany) is 3-1 at first singles.

Goldey-Beacom is in search of its first CACC title. It advanced to the final in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2014.

Anna Hortelano Pey Heads Goldey-Beacom’s List of Women’s Tennis All-CACC Honorees

Goldey-Beacom’s regular-season champion women’s tennis squad saw freshman Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) named first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and five of her teammates picked second team.

The second-team list for the Lightning includes seniors Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) and Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) as well as freshmen Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain), Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and Lea Schmuecker (Marburg, Germany). The six honorees represent the most of any team in the league.

Anna Hortelano Pey has made an immediate impact for the Lightning this season, recording a 5-1 singles record that includes 4-0 at No. 2 singles. She won her first five matches of the season, all in straight sets, and only dropped a combined five games over each of the last two wins.

She is the first freshman for GBC to be named first team all-league since Stephanie Puentes Robinson in 2011.

Sengl owns a 7-0 singles record this fall and is 7-0 at first doubles.

Sengl shares her doubles record with Beg, who also has had a solid run with the Lightning. She has a 6-1 singles record this fall, including 3-0 at second singles.

GBC ended that season ranked 31st in the country and with a school-record 18 victories.

Garcia Valle sports a 7-0 singles mark that includes 4-0 at fourth singles and also is 6-0 at third doubles. All six of her singles matches that have been best-of-three sets were decided in straight sets. Of her doubles matches that all are played in a pro set, she only has dropped five games with the last three being 8-0.

Silvia Hortelano Pey shares the aforementioned doubles stats with Garcia Valle. In singles, she is 7-0 with a 4-0 mark at No. 6 singles and all five of her best-of-three-set matches ended in two.

Schmuecker is 3-1 at first singles, winning her first three matches in straight sets. She is 3-3 at second doubles, winning three of her four matches teamed with junior Raquel Morais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil).

The squad’s 7-0 conference record is its best in team history and its 7-0 overall mark entering the week is the best since opening a team-record 8-0 in 2010-11.

Three for Goldey-Beacom Picked to CACC Weekly Honor Roll

Goldey-Beacom was granted three spots on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Honor Roll with freshman Markus Poulsen (Birkerod, Denmark) selected for men’s soccer, and senior Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) and freshman Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) tabbed for women’s tennis.

Poulsen scored two goals over three games, leading to a pair of victories. His most important goal came with 31 seconds left in the first half of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Caldwell. Poulsen also scored Thursday in Goldey-Beacom’s 3-1 triumph over Shippensburg.

The win on Saturday enabled GBC (9-4-1, 6-2-1 CACC) to clinch a spot in the CACC Tournament for the second straight year. The Lightning remained in second place in the league and have won three of their last four contests.

Beg won her lone singles match, 6-2, 6-1 at second singles vs. Holy Family to help Goldey-Beacom clinch its first undefeated CACC regular season in school history. She also teamed with senior Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) for an 8-6 win at first doubles.

Beg is 7-0 in doubles this year, all with Sengl, and is 6-1 at singles with a 3-0 mark at second singles.

Garcia Valle posted a 6-1, 6-4 at third singles vs. Holy Family. She also teamed with freshman Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) for an 8-0 victory at third doubles.

Garcia Valle is 7-0 at singles with a 4-0 mark at fourth singles. She also is 6-0 at third doubles with Hortelano Pey.

Fri, December 30, 2016
Honolulu, HI (Dec. 30, 2016) --- Many people travel to Hawaii for the holidays to escape the winter cold for some fun in the sun. Delaware State’s visit to the Aloha State this week was not quite as enjoyable, as the Hornets were frustrated by the University of Hawai’i 77-66 at the Stan Sheriff Center. The contest marked the season’s final non-conference game for DSU, which begins its 2016-17 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule next weekend at North Carolina A&T.

JackPurchase led the Rainbow Warriors with 21 points, highlighted by five three-point field goals. He also had a team-high eight rebounds. Sheriff Drammeh added 12 points and Brocke Stepteau 10 for Hawai’i.

Devin Morgan was high man for Delaware State, topping all players with 26 points on 9-for-13 shooting overall and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Morgan has scored 50 points in the last two games, knocking down 16 of his 29 shots (55.2%), including 8-of-16 from beyond the arc (50%) during the span. He has five 20-point games this season, topping his total of four as a freshman during his 2015-16 MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year campaign

DeAndre Haywood added 16 points for the Hornets on 6-of-11 shooting, including a season-high three three-point field goals.

Hawai’i (6-7) led 41-27 at the half. The Hornets outscored the Warriors 39-36 in the final 20 minutes, but trailed by as many as 20 points after the break.

Delaware State (3-12) was outrebounded 35-21 and hurt by 14-of-25 shooting at the free throw line (56%). Hawaii was 17-of-20 at the line in the contest.

The Hornets tied the game at 19 on a three-pointer by Haywood before Hawaii took control.

Delaware State was outscored 17-8 over the next seven minutes, and fell behind 36-27 on a Hawai’i basket with 3:51 left in the opening half.

The Hornets could get no closer than 14 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Hawaii led by 20 on two occasions in the half, the last time after a lay-up by Drammeh to put the Warriors ahead 61-41 with 7:34 left to play.

Delaware State speeded the pace of the game on offense and defense down the stretch, allowing it outscore Hawai’i 10-2 in the final 1:15 to make the final score more respectable.

The Hornets will return to action on Jan. 7, 2017 for their MEAC opener at North Carolina A&T. Game time is 4 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C. DSU will also visit North Carolina Central (Jan. 9) before returning home to face defending MEAC champ Hampton on Jan. 14.

SUBJECT: Delaware Falls in New Years Eve Thriller with 58-56 Setback to Hofstra in CAA Opener
DATE:  December 31, 2016
NEWARK, Del.
-- The young University of Delaware men’s basketball squad suffered its first home loss in a 58-56 setback to Hofstra at the Bob Carpenter Center Saturday afternoon, but the Blue Hens made a strong statement that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the Colonial Athletic Association this season.

Playing their CAA opener on New Year’s Eve afternoon, the Hens battled back from a 12-point second half deficit and had the chance to win the game bur Ryan Daly’s three-point attempt just before the buzzer bounced off the rim.

It was one of the few things that went wrong for Daly on the afternoon as the freshman guard scored a career-high 20 points, tied his career-high with 15 rebounds, and recorded his second straight double-double for the Hens (7-7, 0-1 CAA), who were coming off a 63-54 win over Iona Wednesday that helped them match last year’s win total. Daly had 18 points and 12 rebounds in that win, his first career start for Delaware.

Anthony Mosley added 13 points and Devonne Pinkard contributed eight points for the Hens, who turned the ball over just seven times and had a 41-36 rebounding advantage but were hurt by 34.5 percent shooting from the field (19 of 55).

“I was pleased with the group that finished the game, I thought they played really, really hard and were resilient," Blue Hen first-yearn head coach Martin Ingelsby said. "Our zone was good but we didn't shoot the ball well from three, and we have to capitalize from the foul line. We just dug ourselves too big a hole in the second half. We need to find ways to generate offense late in the game."

Hofstra (8-5, 1-0 CAA), which played without third leading scorer Brian Bernardi (13.1 ppg), won its third straight game as Ty Greer tied a career-high with 17 points and pulled seven rebounds, Justin Wright-Foreman added 15 points, and freshman Eli Pemberton chipped in with 11 points. The Hens held All-CAA forward Rokas Gustys, the nation’s No. 2 leading rebounder at 13.5 per game, to 11 rebounds and just a single point before he fouled out in the final minutes.

Hofstra took a 30-26 halftime lead but Delaware scored the first seven points of the second half to take its first lead since early in the game. But the Pride responded with a 15-0 run of its own to take a 45-33 lead with 12:46 remaining.

The Pride still led by eight points at 51-43 with 9:08 remaining but the Hens never flinched and used a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 51-49 and tied the game at 56-56 with 1:00 left on a Daly three-pointer. Wright-Foreman was fouled on a three-point attempt with 36 seconds left and made two free throws to up the HU lead to 36.

Daly missed a potential game-tying jumper with 22 seconds left but the Hens got the offensive rebound and another chance. Mosley also missed a potential game-tying shot but also was off the mark and Hofstra’s Pemberton grabbed the rebound and was fouled with six seconds left. But Pemberton missed the one-and-one and gave Delaware one more shot. Daly had an open look just to the right of the top of the key but was off the mark as the buzzer sounded.

SUBJECT: Men’s Basketball Hangs On to Start 2017 with a 91-81 Nonconference Victory at the District of Columbia

DATE: January 2, 2017
djl

WASHINGTON, D.C. - - The 2017 calendar year started off on a high note for the Wilmington University men’s basketball team, as it held off the District of Columbia in the second half, 91-81, on Monday night at the UDC Sports Complex.

The 91 points ties a season high for the Wildcats (9-5), as they held as large as a 17-point lead early in the second half. The Firebirds (6-6) fought all the way back to within two points late in the second half, but the Wildcats held on for the win in their final nonconference contest of the season.

Trailing by six points midway through the first half, the Wildcats took their first lead of the game with 7:14 left. Brian Adkins hit a three-pointer before Tyaire Ponzo-Meek hit back-to-back layups for the lead, 21-20, at the under eight-minute media timeout. Adkins finished off the 10-0 run with another three-pointer and the Wildcats never gave allowed the Firebirds to regain the lead.

Former Firebird but current Wildcat Masner Beauplan hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark another 10-0 run, finished off by a Omari Dill-Pettiford layup and a Nick Richards steal and dunk, extending the lead to 34-23. Drew Johnson II ended the first half with a steal and dunk of his own, sending the Wildcats into the break leading 42-27.

A Richards jumper 1:32 into the second half gave the Wildcats a 46-29 lead, their largest of the evening. A 10-1 UDC spurt brought the home team back to within 49-42 with 14:30 left in regulation, as the comeback was on.

A Traevon Butler three-pointer closed the gap to within 55-51 with 8:56 to play before a Khalil Jackson layup had the Firebirds to as close as 62-59 with 6:29 left. Another Jackson layup had the home team as close as they’ve been since midway through the first half, closing to within 65-63 with 4:42 showing on the clock.

Ponzo-Meek had an answer for every Firebird attack, however, scoring 12 straight Wildcat points to keep the visitors ahead. A three-pointer with 1:47 to play put the Wildcats ahead 77-71, while Ponzo-Meek answered a Firebirds layup with a layup of his own, 79-73, with 1:12 left.

The Firebirds kept the pressure on, again scoring to get the game to within four points at 81-77, but Richards finished off a Johnson pass with another flush and Ponzo-Meek came up with a steal on the ensuing possession to seal the deal. The Wildcats hit all eight of their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Ponzo-Meek finished with a game-high 26 points, shooting 10-of-18 from the floor. Dill-Pettiford went 7-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line for his 20 points while Beauplan came off the bench to score 14 points. Richards filled the stat sheet with 13 points and team highs of nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

The Wildcats will focus their attention on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference for the rest of the season, starting with a cross divisional battle at Felician on Wednesday night. The men will tip-off after the women’s game at approximately 8:00 p.m.
