A men's health fair will take place from 10:30 a.m. until 12 noon on the BCC Concourse, prior to the 12 noon tipoff between the Blue Hens and Tigers. The fair will include free blood pressure and glucose screenings for men compliments of the UD School of Nursing, a UD Employee Wellness Program, and Healthy HENS, of Student Health Services. The initiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of coaches nationwide. The program seeks to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living among students, faculty and staff, fans, and the community at large.

"The goal of Healthy HENS and Student Health Services is to promote healthy lifestyles and help the students to make positive changes that they will take with them on their journey in life long after graduation," said Dr. Timothy Dowling, UD Director of Student Health Services. "It is important as stewards of health promotion, for us to partner with all departments on the UD campus and our surrounding community. We are delighted to be a part of this great initiative."

"I am very appreciative that the University of Delaware is holding the Men's Health Awareness event in conjunction with our home game," said Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "It is extremely important that we as men take care of our bodies and visits doctors on a regular basis for checkups and screenings. There are many treatments for different health issues we might face in our lives, and the key is early detection. Our health not only affects our lives, but the lives of our friends and family as well."

The Atlantic 10 Conference announced Thursday its annual Basketball Legends and current University of Delaware women's basketball associate head coach Jeanine Radice is one of 26 former basketball student-athletes and coaches named by the league for the immeasurable impact each made on their respective institution and basketball program.

"Any time you can be recognized for your accomplishments is a great honor," commented Radice. "I truly enjoyed my four years at Fordham University and I am honored to be a part of the A-10 Legends."

Radice, a former standout at Fordham University (then in the MAAC), is the second leading scorer in school history with 2,417 points while leading the Rams with 21.8 points per game and a 47.5 shot percentage from behind the arc during her four-year career.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Continues to Cruise in CAA Play, Knock Off Pre-Season Favorite Towson 83-76

DATE:  January 25, 2014

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware raced out to a 15-point halftime lead and then held off a late rally by Towson to stay unbeaten in Colonial Athletic Association play Saturday afternoon with an 83-76 men's basketball win at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Playing before a season-high crowd of 4,138 and a regional Comcast TV audience, Delaware (14-7, 6-0 CAA) led from start to finish and extended its winning streak to eight games overall and six straight victories at the BCC. The Hens are now 6-1 at the BCC this season and have won 21 of their last 26 home games since January, 2011.

Delaware senior guard Devon Saddler sparked the Blue Hens again as he posted his school-record tying seventh straight 20-point effort with a team-high 23 markers, junior guard Jarvis Threatt added 20 points, and senior guard Davon Usher knocked down 17 points to lead the way. Sophomore forward Marvin King-Davis chipped in with 10 points and joined Usher, Threatt, and Carl Baptiste with a team-high five rebounds.

Saddler's seventh straight 20-point effort tied the school record set by Kenn Barnett in 1966-67 and by Ken Luck in 1980-81. Saddler has now scored 1,973 career points and now needs only 27 to reach 2,000 and is 57 shy of the school record of 2,030 points by Mike Pegues.

The Blue Hens are off to a 6-0 start in league play for only the third time in school history and for the first time since 1991-92 when Delaware went 14-0 in league play on the way to capturing the North Atlantic Conference title and the school's first NCAA Tournament berth.

"It was a hard-fought game with not a lot of flow to it, but we will take the win," said Delaware head coach Monte Ross. "Our effort was tremendous. We knew Towson would make a run, but we were able to withstand it. We knew today would be a challenge and I'm glad that our guys stepped up. We can't thank the crowd enough for coming out and supporting us today.

Towson (12-8, 3-2 CAA), the pre-season league favorite, lost for the second straight game despite a huge effort from pre-season Player of the Year Jerelle Benimon, who poured in 29 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season. He also surpassed the 20-point mark for the 10th time this season.

Marcus Damas added 12 points and six rebounds for the Tigers while Rafriel Guthrie added 11 points and six rebounds off the bench. Both Damas and Guthrie, as well teammate Barrington Alston, fouled out in the final nine minutes.

The rough-and-tumble affair featured 59 combined fouls - 31 by Towson - and 80 free throw attempts. The Hens drained 26 of 41 shots from the charity stripe to stay in front. Towson, which outrebounded the Hens 50-33, hit on 28 of 39 attempts.

Delaware stormed out to a 10-point lead midway through the first half and outscored Towson 11-0 over the final 4:48 to take a 40-25 advantage into halftime.

The Hens led by as many as 17 points at 46-29 early in the second half before the Tigers, led by Benimon's 20-second half points, rallied back. Towson eventually cut the Delaware margin to six points at 61-55 with 9:23 left and to within four at 63-59 with 7:57 remaining. The Tigers cut the Delaware lead to four again at 67-63 on a Benimon layup with 6:01 remaining, but the Hens would not allow Towson to get any closer.

Among the big plays for the Hens down the stretch were a conventional three-point play by Threatt with 5:14 left to push the Delaware lead back to seven and a key three-pointer by Saddler with 1:02 left that gave the Hens an insurmountable 79-71 cushion.

Delaware will return to action Wednesday, Jan. 29, when the Hens travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on William & Mary.

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball team overcame a 22-point halftime deficit, but allowed a College of Charleston jumper with four seconds remaining to fall, 68-66, in a heartbreaker Sunday evening at TD Arena.

The Blue Hens (11-6, 3-3 Colonial Athletic Association) outscored the Cougars (11-8, 4-2 CAA) by 20 points in the second half and had things tied at 66-66 with less than 20 seconds remaining in the game until Afreyea Tolbert knocked down a jumper in the paint with six seconds on the clock. A floating jumper from Delaware freshman Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) wouldn't bounce in as time expired and CofC came away with the victory.

UD came out in the second half and immediately pounced on the Cougars by going on a 17-3 run to come within eight at 48-40. The College of Charleston proceeded to take a 19-point advantage with just under seven minutes remaining in the game before the Hens crawled right back into things.

With five minutes left on the clock, Delaware outscored the Cougars, 13-0, including seven Blue Hens free throws.

Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) and redshirt sophomore Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va.) each collected double doubles in the loss. Buchanan marked her sixth career double-double by tying a career-high 27 points in addition to 12 rebounds. Caracciolo tallied the second double-double of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Mikaela Hopkins and Breanna Bolden also each had double doubles for the Cougars. Hopkins registered 19 points and 12 rebounds while Bolden contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds for the College.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin ? "I am proud of the effort we put forth in the second half and I told them after the game that we showed the heart of a fighter. We fought and we refused to be embarrassed here. It's really hard right now with this young group because they're so see-saw-ish. Obviously, if we played with as much enthusiasm and fight in the first half as we did in the second, we would have put ourselves in an outstanding position to win this basketball game."

Redshirt Sophomore Joy Caracciolo ? "We were just focusing on one stop at a time. We got really excited when we cut the lead, but we let up a couple of times and that's when they got more points. It was a really emotional game; we knew how bad we played in the first half, so we were really trying to make up for it in the second. It's a really tough loss and it's almost worse than losing by a lot because we know we worked really hard and we were right there. We showed a lot of heart and I'm proud of this team."

HEN SCRATCHINGS

· The 22-point halftime deficit was the largest of the season for the Blue Hens. They previously held a deficit of six points at the half against Hofstra on Jan. 5.

· Delaware held the Cougars without a single point for nearly five minutes to close the game until Tolbert's basket.

· Delaware has had at least two players score in double figures in all 14 games this season.

· The College of Charleston takes the all-time series advantage of 1-0 against Delaware.

· The two teams will match up again this season with a Feb. 13 meeting at the Bob Carpenter Center.

· Kelsey Buchanan has scored double figures in all 17 games this season.

· Hannah Jardine collected a career-best nine rebounds.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

NEWARK, Del. ? In his 14th season at the helm of the University of Delaware baseball program, head coach Jim Sherman has named team captains for the 2014 slate. Redshirt junior outfielder Joe Giacchino and senior outfielder/designated hitter Alex Mottle will serve as the team's captains for the upcoming season.

"Both of these young men represent the best for the University, on the field and in the classroom," said Sherman. "They each carry over a 3.2 GPA and are outstanding in their dedication and leadership. The duo is truly two of best young men we have ever had to represent our baseball program as captains."

Giacchino started in 47 games for Delaware in center field while also hitting lead off. The West Chester, Pa. native registered a .307 batting average totaling 65 hits including 12 doubles, two triples and two homeruns. The outfielder led the Hens with nine stolen bases on 11 attempts.

"I feel honored and beyond blessed to be named co-captain alongside my great friend, Alex," said Giacchino. "At the end of the day, win or lose, my relationships with my teammates go well beyond the white chalk lines of Bob Hannah Stadium. I truly care for them and have promised to devote myself to both them and the best interests of our team. With that being said, all I want to do is win. And I believe that we have the talent this year to do exactly that."

Last season, Mottle primarily served as a designated hitter for the Hens. The New Jersey native saw action in 34 games for Delaware receiving the starting nod on 10 occasions. The left-handed hitter registered a .308 average with 16 hits and 10 RBIs in 52 at bats.

"When Coach Sherman called me over the summer to tell me I was going to be a captain for this upcoming season, I was extremely honored hearing the news because he saw me as someone who works hard on the field and in the classroom, and as a teammate who all the guys respect," said Mottle. "My expectations for this season are to make a run at the CAA championship. We lost a lot from last years team, four of which are playing professional baseball now, but at the same time we have a lot of experience coming back at several positions and I feel like we will step up to the occasion and fill right in without missing a beat."

In other Delaware baseball news, two members of the 2014 squad were named to the Preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Team. Juniors Brock Niggebrugge and Ty Warrington, both Delaware natives, earned honorable mention honors on the pre-season team.

Niggebrugge is the only returner for the Hens who received All-CAA honors in 2013. The short stop started in all 55 games for Delaware last season and owned a team-best 13-game hit streak. Niggebrugge tallied 51 hits in 180 at bats to register a .283 batting average and ranked second on the squad with 177 assists to go along with 70 putouts.

Warrington saw action in 42 games behind the plate for the Blue Hens and caught a team-high 23 runners stealing. Warrington recorded 309 putouts and 38 assists to tally a .994 fielding percentage. He record 39 hits, including seven doubles, in his sophomore campaign.

Delaware opens the 2014 season in less than a month when the Hens travel to Charleston, S.C. to play in The Citadel's Homewood Suites Tournament. The Hens open with The Citadel on Friday, Feb. 14 then will play West Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 15. Delaware wraps up the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 16 when the Blue Hens take on preseason No. 16/20 Louisville.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Spirit Teams Post Impressive Finishes at UCA Championships; Cheerleaders Win National Title

DATE:  January 28, 2014

sws:

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Led by a national championship first place finish by the co-ed cheerleading squad, the University of Delaware spirit teams enjoyed an outstanding showing at the recent United Cheerleading Association (UCA) Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports at Walt Disney World Complex.

The University of Delaware Co-Ed Cheerleading squad captured first place in the Division I competition as the Blue Hens snapped a seven-year streak of second place finishes and overtook 12-time defending champion and rival Morehead State University (2002-13) for the title. The event was held Jan. 17-19.

"I am extremely proud and excited about what this team has accomplished," said UD cheerleading head coach Ben Schreiber. "We are so excited to finally take the next step and win the national championship. In my seven years as an athlete and coach here at Delaware, we have finished in second place seven consecutive years and it feels amazing to finally win it all. We went through so much adversity this year but the team never gave up. During our nationals season in December and January the team truly became a family and set the tone for future teams."

Delaware, which features just two seniors on its roster, posted a score of 89.1 points (out of 100) by the judging panel to win by four points. The title was the second in school history for the Blue Hens and first since the 2001 squad won it all.

In addition to the first place finish by the cheerleading squad, the University of Delaware was also well-represented in two other categories with YoUDee placing second in the Open Mascot Division behind Tennessee Tech and the UD Dance Team finishing fifth in the Hip Hop Division (just 1.5 points behind the winner) and sixth in the Jazz Division.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Continues To Roll, Posts Ninth Straight Win With 89-72 Victory at William & Mary

DATE: January 29, 2014

kmt:

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team remained unbeaten in the CAA and continued its impressive start to the conference season as the Blue Hens jumped in front early and never trailed from there during an 89-72 victory over William & Mary Wednesday night at Kaplan Arena.

The Blue Hens, who improved to 15-7 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the conference, won their ninth straight game and improved to 4-0 in league road contests this season. Delaware has now claimed its last eight CAA road games and is 15-2 in its last 17 conference outings away from Newark.

UD senior guard Davon Usher led the offensive attack by pouring in a game-high 28 points, going 9 of 15 from the field including 6 of 9 from three-point range. Senior forward Carl Baptiste scored a career-high 23 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the field, while fellow senior Devon Saddler produced an exceptional all-around effort of 19 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals. Saddler has now scored 1,995 career points and needs just five more to become the second player in UD history to reach the 2,000-point mark.

Junior Kyle Anderson was the fourth Blue Hen in double figures with 11 points, while he added a career-high 10 rebounds to post the first double-double of his career. Delaware, which was playing its first game since the suspensions of Jarvis Threatt and Marvin King-Davis, shot 51.6 percent from the field and knocked down 10 of 22 shots from behind the arc. The Blue Hens have now shot over 50 percent in three of their last four games.

William & Mary, which had a two-game winning streak snapped and a four-game home winning streak halted, dropped to 12-8 overall and 4-3 in league play. Marcus Thornton paced the Tribe with 19 points and five assists, while Daniel Dixon chipped in with 15 points off the bench.

"This is one of the most unbelievable performances that I've seen from a Delaware team, to be honest," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "To be able to respond against a William & Mary team that has a lot of firepower and come out with the win in a very hostile environment is very satisfying. We showed a lot of poise, toughness and composure tonight. It's a sign of a pretty good program that can lose two key guys and still beat a quality opponent on the road."

In a game featuring the top two scoring teams in the CAA Delaware exploded out of the gate, using an early 11-0 run to take a 13-3 lead and force a William & Mary time out five minutes into the contest. The advantage expanded to 23-6 at the 10:15 mark following consecutive Usher three-pointers, while later in the half a Cazmon Hayes triple culminated an 8-0 Blue Hen run that put Delaware up 39-17 with 4:36 on the clock.

The margin grew to a game-high 24 a minute later when Usher drilled his fourth three-pointer of the period, and after the Tribe cut the lead in half with a 15-3 spurt, Saddler scored just before the final horn to give the Blue Hens a 47-33 advantage at the break.

The teams traded baskets early in the second half, before a 7-0 William & Mary run finally pulled the Tribe within single digits at 59-50 with 12:10 remaining. But Delaware would immediately answer, as Saddler scored inside to ignite a 10-2 spurt that put the Blue Hens back up 17 at 69-52 with 8:37 left.

The Blue Hens cruised from there, leading by at least 14 points the rest of the way.

Delaware begins a four-game homestand on Saturday with a 12 noon home game against UNCW.

Game Notes:

? UD went undefeated in January for the fourth time in school history, and the first since 1966-67

? UD is 7-0 in league play for just the second time in school history, along with 1991-92 team that went 14-0 in North Atlantic Conference

? Delaware's eight-game conference road winning streak is tied for the second longest in school history

? Devon Saddler narrowly missed scoring 20 points in his eighth straight game, which would have been a school record

? Cazmon Hayes scored six points off the bench, tied for his second highest output of the season

? Delaware held a 42-30 rebounding advantage

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Basketball Bounces Back With 74-65 Victory Over Northeastern

DATE: January 30, 2014

mh:

NEWARK, Del. ? The University of Delaware women's basketball team jumped out to a 15-2 lead and never looked back as the Blue Hens picked up a 74-65 victory over Northeastern Thursday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.

UD spread the offensive wealth against Northeastern as four players scored at least 10 points on the night.

Blue Hens senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) led the way once again for Delaware (12-6, 4-3 CAA) as the center scored a game-high 26 points in addition to pulling down seven rebounds.

Redshirt sophomore Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va.) tied a career-best with 14 points while freshman Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) tallied her first double digit scoring game with 10 points. Sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) added 12 points and five assists in the victory.

Delaware freshman Jodi Salyer (Roanoke, Va.) tied a career-high with six of the Blue Hens' 17 assists.

The win snapped a rare two-game losing streak for the two-time CAA defending champion Hens, who defeated the Huskies for the 24th straight time and improved to 16-2 all-time against NU in Newark.

Northeastern (7-12, 1-5 CAA), which lost its fifth straight game and fell for the eighth time in the last nine outings, received 21 points and six rebounds from Samantha DeFreese. Kazzidy Stewart came off the bench to add 17 points while Jewel Tunstull contributed 15 points and a team-best eight rebounds.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin

"This team is so young and they can be so fragile at times, but they are constantly learning. We needed this win desperately after tough back-to-back losses. It was great to see them come out strong in the first 10 minutes and that was probably the first time we've done that in a month. Tonight they really stepped up, even when Northeastern made a run."

Redshirt sophomore Joy Caracciolo

"It was very important that we continued to keep our foot on the gas and make sure to keep scoring, followed by getting stops. After coming back from a 22-point lead at Charleston, we didn't want to be on the opposite end of that and have an opponent come back on us. That game showed us that anything can happen and you have to play all 40 minutes. The way we played in the second half at Charleston is how we want to play an entire game."

Freshman Hannah Jardine

"Our defense starting pulling down rebounds and we really stuck together as a unit on defense. We rotated, helped on traps down low and that's what really kept us going in the second half. Northeastern was a double threat because they could shoot and they could drive, so it wasn't like we could completely back off. We definitely had to be focused defensively as they were no easy task."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Lacrosse Wins Again on Opening Day, Shuts Down High Point for 10-3 Victory

DATE:  February 1, 2014

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's lacrosse squad celebrated an Opening Day win once again Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens used a stellar defensive effort led by goalkeeper Conor Peaks on the way to a 10-3 victory over High Point at Delaware Stadium.

The Blue Hens (1-0), who traditionally open the national men's lacrosse schedule each season, did so again Saturday and Peaks was the leader as he recorded a career-high tying 15 saves as Delaware won its 12th straight season opener since 2003.

Junior Jeff Heath and redshirt freshman Steve Delargy led the offense with two goals each and senior Connor McRoy contributed a goal and two assists as the Blue Hens jumped out to a 3-0 and never looked back. Delargy, who played in just three games a year ago and retained his freshman eligibility, is one of 22 freshmen on a squad that ranks among the youngest throughout the NCAA Division I ranks.

"We really focused this week on their (High Point's) strengths, our guys did a great job preparing, and it paid off," said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw. "This is a group that plays well together, they enjoy each other, and they have developed a good chemistry. Conor (Peaks) did a great job today and our defense created saveable shots that he came through on. We made them battle for every shot they took."

High Point, a second-year program which went 3-12 a year ago, received goals from Michael LeClair, Dan Lomas, and Brad James with LeClair also dishing out an assist. The Panthers lost their fifth straight game dating back to last season.

Brian Kormondy, Brandon Worrall, Beau Jones, Alex Martinelli, and Chris Colaneri each added goals with Kormondy adding an assist.

Delaware outshot High Point 42-32, won 10 of 17 faceoffs, and forced 19 Panther turnovers. The Hens also successfully killed all five of its penalties and was a perfect 17 of 17 on clears.

The Blue Hens jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and never looked back in posting the win. Kormondy opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, Heath followed 90 seconds later, and Delargy scored his first career goal with 6:17 left in the opening stanza.

High Point finally got on the board on a goal by James just 57 seconds into the second quarter and pulled to within 4-2 on a score by LeClair with 3:55 left in the half before a man-up goal by Delargy and a tally by Martinelli gave the Hens a 6-2 lead at the break. Heath and Jones added goals in the third quarter to up the lead to 8-2.

Delaware will continue action next Saturday when the Hens travel to No. 15 Bucknell for a 5 p.m. start in Lewisburg, Pa.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Basketball Edges UNCW, 66-65, To Remain Perfect in CAA Play

DATE: February 1, 2014

kmt:

NEWARK, Del. -- Davon Usher and Devon Saddler each had key blocks in the final minute while Carl Baptiste scored the winning basket with 26 seconds remaining as the University of Delaware men's basketball team shook off a tough shooting day to edge UNCW, 66-65, Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens extended their win streak to 10 straight games, tied for the third longest streak in school history, while improving to 16-7 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Delaware also claimed its seventh consecutive home game, its longest streak since the 2004 season.

The Blue Hens went just 20 of 58 from the field, as their 34.5 shooting percentage was the second lowest of the season, but were able to overcome an eight-point deficit with 9:14 remaining to remain unbeaten in the league.

UD senior guard Devon Saddler scored 12 of his 15 points after halftime, as he surpassed the 2,000-point mark for his career. Saddler, the third leading active scorer in the nation, has now scored 2,010 career points and needs 21 more to break the school record held by Mike Pegues.

Usher chipped in with 13 points, all but two in the second half, while Baptiste contributed 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Blue Hens also got key contributions off the bench from freshmen Devonne Pinkard, who went 3 of 3 from behind the arc to finish with nine points, and Cazmon Hayes, who contributed eight points.

Cedrick Williams posted team-highs of 18 points and eight rebounds for UNCW, which dropped its 11th straight game while falling to 6-16 overall and 0-7 in the CAA. Addison Spruill chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Seahawks, who lost their sixth consecutive game in Newark.

Neither team shot well during the first period before a Pinkard three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Blue Hens a 28-26 halftime lead, but the Seahawks got their offense rolling in the second stanza and eventually took a 53-45 advantage with 9:14 to play.

However the Blue Hens quickly used a 10-2 spurt, highlighted by consecutive three-point plays from Usher, to draw even at 55-55 with 6:39 left. UNCW rebounded to go up 65-52 with 1:55 to go on a jump hook by Shane Reybold, before a free throw by Baptiste made it a two-point game. Usher then hit one of two from the line following a Blue Hen steal, while his blocked shot with 33 seconds left gave Delaware the ball back.

Saddler then raced down court and found Baptiste inside for the go-ahead layup, and following a UNCW time out, he blocked an 18-foot jumper by the Seahawks' Chris Dixon. The rebound was a jump ball with Delaware earning possession, and even though Saddler missed two free throws after being fouled with :00.4 left, UNCW's last ditch heave was off the mark.

"I am ecstatic about this victory today, as much so as Wednesday's win at William & Mary," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "We didn't play particularly well, and UNCW had a lot to do with that, but we found a way to win. Devon (Saddler) helped us get two big stops late and Carl (Baptiste) had the key basket at the end; we just made plays when we had to. Our defense kept us in the game, and I'm thrilled we were able to pull out a win when we didn't shoot the ball well."

The Blue Hens, coming off an 89-point performance in Williamsburg on Wednesday, made just three field goals through the first 11 minutes of Saturday's contest and trailed 12-9 midway through the period. Six consecutive points by Hayes put Delaware up 20-16, and after the Seahawks went back up a point, Pinkard connected from the left wing just before the horn to give Delaware a two-point cushion at the break.

Game Notes:

? Delaware's 10-game win streak is the program's longest since a school-record 20 straight in 1991-92

? Delaware has opened 8-0 in conference play for the second time in school history

? The Blue Hens have now won four consecutive games over UNCW

? Devonne Pinkard's nine points tied a season-high

? Saddler has reached double figures in all 16 games in which he has appeared this year

? Delaware is back home on Monday to host Northeastern at 7 p.m.

SUBJECT: Saddler Breaks Scoring Record, Leads University of Delaware Men's Basketball to 80-67 CAA Victory Over Northeastern

DATE:  February 3, 2014

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- Senior guard Devon Saddler scored 21 points and became the University of Delaware's all-time leading scorer and hot-shooting Davon Usher finished with a game-high 25 points as the league-leading Blue Hens won their 11th straight game with an 80-67 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over Northeastern Monday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Saddler (Aberdeen/Aberdeen, Md.), who upped his career total to 2,031 points to pass the mark of 2,031 established by Mike Pegues back in 1996-2000, also dished out a game-high eight assists and pulled down five rebounds as the Blue Hens (17-7, 9-0 CAA) led from wire-to-wire for the victory.

"That was the toughest two points I've ever scored," said Saddler, who broke the record on two free throws with 4:04 left to play after missing six straight field goal attempts that would have earned him the record a little sooner. "I had Mike Pegues as a coach and he told me that I had the potential to eventually break his record. It felt good to finally pass him."

Usher knocked down his first five three-point attempts and converted 8 of 12 field goal attempts for the night, senior center Carl Baptiste notched his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, and Kyle Anderson added 15 points in yet another all-around Delaware effort. Delaware registered a season-high 12 three-pointers on 27 attempts and committed just six turnovers the entire evening.

The Blue Hens, whose win streak is currently the 10th longest in NCAA Division I and UD's longest since 1998-99, have also won eight straight at home, the longest such streak since the 1998-2000 seasons. The 10-game overall win streak is the third longest in Delaware history.

"Our energy to start the game and to open the second half was fantastic," said Delaware head coach Monte Ross. "We need that type of energy on the defensive end too. We can score,, but defensively we need to keep making strides. Devon has meant so much to this program. It hasn't been lost on me the correlation between the day he stepped foot on campus and when we started winning. He is a true competitor and does whatever it takes to help the team win."

Northeastern (7-16, 4-5 CAA), which lost its second straight game, got 21 points and eight rebounds from Scott Eatherton and 12 points from David Walker. Delaware defeated the Huskies for the second time in two weeks after also winning 74-70 on Jan. 18.

The Huskies, who lost for just the third time in their last 14 CAA road games since last season, allowed over 58 points for just the second time in their last seven outings with Delaware surpassing that 58-point mark both times. The Hens had 48 points at halftime and had reached the 60-point mark just six minutes into the second half.

Delaware scored the first seven points of the game and led 13-3 just over four minutes into the contest and never looked back. Northeastern rallied and cut Delaware's first half lead to 32-27 with 3:04 left, but the Hens outscored the Huskies 16-2 the rest of the way thanks to two Anderson three-pointers, an Usher dunk, and a long three by Saddler at the buzzer.

The Hens never let up in the second stanza as they scored the first nine points of the half to go up by 26 points at 57-31 four minutes in. They built the lead to as many as 27 points at 72-45 with 7:55 left before Northeastern outscored the Hens 15-4 over the final four minutes to close the gap.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Softball Falls To No. 13 UCLA, 10-0, in 2014 Season Opener at Hawai'i Paradise Classic

DATE: February 6, 2014

HONOLULU, O'ahu -- The 13th-ranked UCLA softball team scored five runs in the first inning and cruised from there as the Bruins posted a 10-0 victory over the University of Delaware in both teams' 2014 season opener Thursday at the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic hosted by Hawai'i.

The Bruins, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season, broke the game open early by scoring five runs on just two hits in the bottom of the first inning.

After UCLA loaded the bases with one out following a hit batter and two walks, a pair of runs scored when Brittany Moeai reached on an error by Blue Hen second baseman Michelle McKinnon. Jessica Hall then doubled down the leftfield line to drive home two more, while she crossed the plate when Alyssa Tiumalo ripped a double to center.

The Bruins tacked on two more runs with two outs in the second, as Hall drew a bases loaded walk before Tiumalu delivered an RBI single to left. Delaney Spaulding singled home a run in the third inning, before Mysha Sataraka knocked home two more to make it a 10-0 game. Kelly Lupton then replaced UD starter Carolyn Szymanski in the circle for the Blue Hens, and retired the next two batters to end the frame.

UCLA pitcher Ally Carda hurled a five-inning no-hitter, allowing just two walks on the afternoon to Blue Hen sophomores Lisa Stacevicz and Shelby Jones.

Szymanski allowed all 10 runs, eight earned, on six hits while walking eight batters in 2.1 innings of work during her Blue Hen debut. Lupton gave up just one hit in 1.2 frames of scoreless relief for Delaware, which was playing its fourth ranked opponent in school history.

The Blue Hens continue action at the tournament on Friday when they face Hampton at 7 p.m. ET and the host Rainbow Wahine at 11 p.m. ET.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Football Assistant Coaches Perry, Fitzsimmons Headed to the National Football League

DATE:  February 7, 2014

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- Two members of the University of Delaware football coaching staff are taking their skills to the National Football League.

Blue Hens head coach Dave Brock announced that passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach John Perry and special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Devin Fitzsimmons will further their careers in the NFL. Perry was named tight ends coach with the Houston Texans and Fitzsimmons was selected as assistant special teams coach for the Detroit Lions earlier this week.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank John and his family and Fitz and his fiancee for the time and effort that they put into Delaware Football and wish them the best in the NFL," said Brock, who led the Blue Hens to a 7-5 record in his first season at the helm in 2013. "It is a terrific compliment to the Delaware football program that they are both so highly thought of and that they now have the opportunity to coach at the highest level."

Perry will join the staff of new Texans head coach Bill O'Brien, who served as head coach at Penn State the past two seasons. Perry and O'Brien served on the same coaching staff at Brown in 1994.

In his first season on the Delaware staff in 2013, Perry mentored starting quarterback Trent Hurley, who led all Colonial Athletic Association signal-callers in passing rating (155.2) and ranked among the league leaders with 2,207 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. Delaware's offense ranked No. 2 in the CAA in scoring offense (32.8 points per game), No. 3 in passing offense (240.0 yards per game), and No. 4 in passing efficiency offense (143.84).

Perry enjoyed an outstanding playing career at New Hampshire and previously served as an assistant coach at Northeastern, Brown, Dartmouth, Georgetown, and New Hampshire. He was head coach at Merrimack (Mass.) College for five seasons in 2008-12 before joining Brock at Delaware.

"I was incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work for Dave Brock at Delaware," said Perry. "His vision and implementation of ideas has created a culture of togetherness and family which laid a foundation for consistent winning. He cares about his staff, UD athletics, student-athletes, and the entire Delaware community. I'm proud to have worked for him and the entire Blue Hen Nation."

Fitzsimmons will reunite with new Lions head coach Jim Caldwell, who was named to the position last month. When Caldwell was head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 2009-11, Fitzsimmons served as offensive quality control assistant during the 2011 campaign.

"I want to thank Coach Brock and (AD) Eric Ziady and everyone associated with the Delaware football family for the opportunity to coach at the University of Delaware," said Fitzsimmons. "It was truly a blessing to be able to work at a premier FCS program. The fans are passionate and knowledgeable and made every game memorable. I wish the best for the players, coaches, staff, and fans. firm;y beleeve he Together we will."

A native or New Orleans, Fitzsimmons played at Bucknell and served on the coaching staffs at Shaw (N.C.), Bucknell, Kansas State, Virginia, Richmond, and Rutgers before coming to Delaware last year. He worked with Brock at Kansas State and Rutgers before joining him at Delaware.

Delaware thrived on special teams this past season under the direction of Fitzsimmons. As a unit, the Blue Hens led the nation in fewest blocked punts allowed (0), ranked No. 2 in net punting (41.47), No. 9 in blocked kicks (6), and No. 20 in punt returns (6.1). Delaware led the CAA in each of those categories.

Rob Jones was selected first team All-CAA as a punt returner thanks to a 12.1-yard average per return and redshirt freshman punter Eric Enderson ranked No. 3 in the nation in punting (45.0) and earned All-American honors. Fitzsimmons also served as tight ends coach and played a big part in the development of junior Nick Boyle, who earned second team All-CAA honors after catching 42 passes for 474 yards and seven touchdowns.

Delaware, which had eight former players on active rosters in the NFL in 2013, now has six former players and coaches on NFL staffs.

In addition to Perry and Fitzsimmons, former defensive coordinator Nick Rapone is safeties coach with Arizona; former offensive line coach Jim Turner holds the same position for Miami; All-American quarterback Matt Nagy is quarterbacks coach in Kansas City; and former all-conference wide receiver and Academic All-American Brett Veach serves as pro and college personnel analyst in Kansas City.

HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The University of Delaware softball team dropped a pair of games at the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic on Friday, falling to Hampton, 7-2, before a 7-0 defeat to tournament host Hawai'i.

During the Blue Hens' first game of the day, Hampton (1-1) jumped in front during the top of the first inning as Danielle Budden delivered a solo home run before Taylor Clark added an RBI single to put the Pirates up a pair early on.

Delaware (0-3) got a run right back in the bottom of the frame when Jessica Grisler led off with a double to centerfield, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a single to rightfield by Giovanna Kolofer.

However the Pirates seized control by plating five runs in the top of the second. Budden ripped a double to leftcenter to drive home two, while she came around to score when Taylor McCoy followed with a single to left. One batter later Kiersten Coffman replaced Kelly Lupton in the circle for Delaware, and after she retired a batter, Clark capped the rally with a two-run single.

Coffman then fired five shutout innings to give the Blue Hens a chance, but Delaware could only push across one more run in the bottom of the seventh when Sarah Bencivenga laced a two-out single up the middle and scored on a double to left by Lisa Stacevicz.

Hampton pitcher Jailynn Jackson earned the complete game victory after allowing just one earned run while Lupton dropped to 0-1 for the Blue Hens after she was charged with seven runs, just three earned, on five hits in 1.1 innings of work.

Delaware then took on Hawai'i (2-0), which is receiving votes in both preseason national polls, with the Rainbow Wahine taking the early lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Leisha Li'ili'i.

Jazmine Zamora added a run-scoring single to centerfield in the second inning, while two more Hawai'i runners crossed the plate on a pair of Blue Hen throwing errors as the Rainbow Wahine extended its margin to 4-0.

Lindsey Willmon singled home a run in the third frame, while Kayla Wartner knocked home another with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it a six-run game. Taylor Curran replaced Carolyn Szymanski in the circle during the bottom of the sixth for UD, and surrendered an RBI double to Kristina Akiona during her first action of the season.

The Blue Hens mustered just two hits during the contest off Hawai'i pitcher Heather Morales, a single by Michelle McKinnon in the second and a single by Szymanski in the fifth.

Szymanski took the loss for Delaware and fell to 0-2 after she gave up six runs, four earned, on eight hits in five innings of work.
