SUBJECT: University of Delaware Softball Holds Off Penn For 5-3 Non-Conference Win Over Quakers

DATE: March 27, 2014

kmt:

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware softball team jumped out to a four-run lead while sophomore Kelly Lupton pitched the final two scoreless innings as the Blue Hens posted a 5-3 non-league victory over Penn Thursday night at Penn Park.

Delaware (9-15) opened the scoring during the top of the first inning, as Danielle Wissinger ripped a one-out double to centerfield and came around to score when Giovanna Kolofer reached on a Quakers error.

Jessica Grisler singled with one out in the third, and after Wissinger was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced on a passed ball, Kolofer delivered a two-run single to right. Kolofer then moved to second on a single by Sarah Bencivenga, and she scored following a double steal and an errant throw by Penn catcher Korinne Raby.

The Quakers (4-11) struck back during the bottom of the frame when Kanani Datan and Kayla Dahlerbruch each singled before Alexis Sargent blasted a three-run homer to rightcenter to cut the Blue Hens' advantage to 4-3.

Delaware tacked on an insurance run in the fifth when Grisler drilled a leadoff homer to center, her team-leading third longball of the season.

The Quakers put the potential tying runs on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but UD starter Carolyn Szymanski retired Lauren Li on a lineout to third to escape the jam. Lupton then retired all six batters she faced in the final two frames, including the first four by strikeout, to earn her first save of the year.

Szymanski improved to 5-8 after she allowed three runs on five hits while striking out six batters. Penn starter Courtney Cuzick dropped to 0-3 after giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits in four innings of work.

Grisler finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored for the Blue Hens, while Kolofer also went 3 for 4 with three runs batted in.

Delaware returns to Colonial Athletic Association action this weekend with a three-game series at UNCW.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Tennis Unable to Advance in CAA Tournament; James Madison Sweeps Blue Hens, 4-0

DATE: April 18, 2014
mh:

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. ? The University of Delaware women's tennis team had a three-match winning streak snapped as James Madison University ended the Blue Hens' season by a score of 4-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinals, held Friday afternoon at William & Mary's Millie West Tennis Facility.

The fourth-seeded Dukes (13-5, 2-3 CAA), who swept the Hens, 7-0, just two weeks ago, posted wins in the top two doubles flights to earn the team point and go into singles action with a 1-0 advantage.

No. 5 Delaware (8-8, 3-2 CAA) put up a fight in singles play, but was unable to come out on top in the end. JMU collected wins in the third, fifth and sixth flights en route to victory.

Due to the nature of the tournament and stopping all matches once the fourth team point is clinched, seniors Olivia Heim (Gibsonia, Pa.) and Dorothy Safron (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Danea Jonjic' (Split, Croatia) were unable to complete their matches.

All three matches were close as Jonjic' (No. 1 singles) and Heim (No. 4 singles) both won their first sets while Safron was tied with Alex Huie in the No. 2 spot.

POST-MATCH QUOTES:

Head coach Laura Travis
"Today's match was a valiant effort against a strong JMU squad. We definitely improved upon our play from when we played them just two weeks ago, but they came out ahead once again."

· Safron is just the third player in school history to record at least 70 singles and 60 doubles wins. Samantha Carnall (2008-12) and Ivana Petrich (2007-11) also reached the mark in their careers.
· Olivia Heim [/B]wrapped up her four-year career in a Delaware uniform with a record of 61-46, a mark good for 11th in the Blue Hens record books.
· Danea Jonjic' [/B]and Christina Harrington were unable to notch their fourth straight doubles victory as they held a 7-4 lead when James Madison clinched the team point.
· Carmen Lai [/B]was unable to compete Friday due to injury.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Bats Can't Get Going as Hofstra Sweeps Softball Doubleheader From Blue Hens

DATE: April 19, 2014

kmt:

NEWARK, Del. --
Hofstra University pitchers Morgan Lashley and Taylor Pirone limited
the University of Delaware to just one run on the day as the Pride swept
a Colonial Athletic Association
softball doubleheader from the Blue Hens, 15-0 and 5-1, Saturday
afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.

The
Pride, which improved to 25-11 overall and 7-4 in the CAA, scored in
each of the first four innings while taking charge of the opener. Erin
Trippi drove home Rachael Senatore with an RBI
groundout in the top of the first, before a two-run single by Michaela
Transue in the second gave Hofstra a three-run lead. The Pride then put
the game away by scoring eight runs in the third, highlighted by a
three-run homer from Caryn Bailey and a three-run
triple by Kim Smith.

Trippi
then doubled home a pair and later scored on a Becca Bigler double as
Hofstra tacked on four runs in the top of the fourth.

The
Blue Hens, who fell to 21-21 overall and 5-8 in league play, got an
infield single from Giovanna Kolofer in the first and a single to right
by Tori Conrad in the second. Lashley allowed
just the two hits and did not walk a batter during her five-inning
shutout, as she improved to 14-4 on the year. Blue Hen starter Carolyn
Szymanski dropped to 11-10 after giving up three runs in an inning-plus,
while Kiersten Coffman and Abby Cline fired two
innings each in relief.

The
second game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning, when
the Pride pushed across four runs. Trippi doubled home the first run of
the contest, before two runs scored on a single
by Bigler. Smith then laced a double to right to chase home Bigler and
make it a 4-0 game.

Delaware
got on the board during the bottom of the fourth, as Sarah Bencivenga
ripped a two-out double to center before scoring on a single to right by
Lisa Stacevicz. However the Pride added
an insurance run in the sixth when Smith worked a bases loaded walk to
close the scoring.

Pirone
improved to 11-5 for Hofstra after she allowed one run on four hits
while striking out four batters. Blue Hen starter Kelly Lupton gave up
five earned runs on 10 hits, as she dropped
to 6-7 on the year.

Delaware
and Hofstra will conclude their three-game series with a 12 noon game
on Sunday at the UD Softball Stadium. Blue Hen seniors Michelle McKinnon
and Brittney Noons will be honored in
a pregame ceremony.

SUBJECT: Blue Hens Drop Below .500 as the University of Delaware Baseball Falls to In-State Foe Wilmington (Del.) 9-3
DATE: April 28, 2014
Jhw:
NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware baseball team lost to in-state foe Wilmington (Del.) 9-3 in a non-league game Monday at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Chris Lopez picked up his second win of the season for Wilmington (Del.), while Blue Hen freshman John Geffre saw his record slip to 0-4 as the righty was credited with the loss.
Wilmington (Del.) (32-7-1) tallied 14 hits in the game as Sam Goines and Josh Hampton each had three hits on the day to lead the Wildcats. The 14 hits were the most given up by the Blue Hen pitching staff since April 9.
Delaware (20-21) had come into the game playing well. The Blue Hens had won five of their last six games, including a weekend series win over UNCW, but the Wildcat offense overpowered the Delaware pitching staff and the Blue Hen offense struggled.
"It was a neighborhood whopping," said University of Delaware head baseball coach Jim Sherman after the defeat. "We played really well over the weekend, but just did not keep it going today. I have to tip my hat to them because today, they really played better than us in every facet of the game."
The Blue Hens got on the scoreboard in the first inning on Zach Lopes RBI single. The Wildcats answered with two runs of their own in the third inning and tacked on another in fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
Delaware scored two runs in the fifth inning on a double from Joe Giacchino and a sacrifice fly from Norm Donkin to tie the game. Those were the last Blue Hen runs as Wilmington (Del.) scored six unanswered runs to close out the game.
The Blue Hens managed only one hit after the fifth inning and the last 10 Delaware batters of the game failed to reach base.
Nick Moylan made his first collegiate start for Delaware and the redshirt freshman gave up two runs in three innings pitched. He was relieved by Geffre and received a no-decision.
Despite the offensive struggles, Giacchino and Donkin provided a few bright spots. Donkin doubled down the left field line in third inning and now has 16 doubles this season which is a team-high and the second-most in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Giacchino had one hit, scored a run, and batted in another in Monday's defeat. With his first inning walk, Giacchino has now reached base safely in the last 20 games.
Today's victory was the first for Wilmington (Del.) over Delaware since 2011 and its 11th overall. Wilmington is ranked No. 20 in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division II poll.
Delaware will next be in action Wednesday as it hosts another in-state opponent in Delaware State. The Blue Hens and Hornets were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader but will now play a single game at 3 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Delaware then hosts Delaware State on Sept. 2, before heading to the Harvard Tournament on Sept. 5-6 to face Central Connecticut, Santa Clara and the Crimson. The Blue Hens are back home to take on Penn on Sept. 9, and will then host the Delaware Tournament on Sept. 12-13 by welcoming Manhattan, Princeton and George Mason to the Bob Carpenter Center. This year will mark the third time in school history, along with 1993 and 1994, that UD will host two tournaments in the same season.

Following its final non-conference home match against Villanova on Sept. 16, the Blue Hens will take on Sacred Heart, South Florida and the host Panthers at the Pittsburgh Tournament on Sept. 19-20.

For the fifth straight season Delaware will open its CAA schedule against Towson, as the Blue Hens play the first of 16 consecutive league matches on Sept. 24 at SECU Arena. The Blue Hens head south to take on defending CAA champion College of Charleston on Sept. 28, while the following weekend Delaware travels north to face Northeastern on Oct. 3 and Hofstra two days later.

UD will battle William & Mary on Oct. 10 at the Carpenter Sports Building, the Blue Hens' first game in their former home since a victory over VCU in the 2011 CAA Tournament championship match. Two days later Delaware returns to the Bob Carpenter Center to face James Madison, before heading to UNCW and league newcomer Elon the following week.

The Blue Hens open a four-match homestand by welcoming Towson to the BCC on Oct. 24, while Hofstra then visits Newark on Oct. 29. The home stretch concludes with matches against College of Charleston on Oct. 31 and Northeastern on Nov. 2.

After a road swing through Virginia to face James Madison on Nov. 7 and William & Mary a day later, Delaware's regular season concludes with home matches against Elon on Nov. 14 and UNCW on Nov. 15. The CAA Tournament will again feature six teams and will be held on Nov. 20-22 on the campus of the regular season champion.

The Blue Hens, who finished 11-17 last season, will be led by third team All-CAA selection and team MVP Ariel Shonk, who enters her junior season slated to again start as the team's libero. Shonk ranked second in the CAA and 11th in Division I by averaging 5.52 digs per set last year, which ranked third on the UD single season list. SUBJECT: Local Rivals and Challenging Non-conference Slate Highlight 2014 University of Delaware Women's Soccer Schedule

DATE: May 29, 2014
Jaw:

NEWARK, Del. -- After posting its third consecutive winning season, the University of Delaware's women's soccer team will face a challenging 2014 schedule in its 25th year as a varsity sport this fall.

The Blue Hens will face four teams - St. Francis (Pa.), Monmouth, St. John's, and Northeastern - that advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2013 in addition to a competitive Colonial Athletic Association slate.

"We have tried to compile a schedule that provides a variety of teams and styles from different conferences," said University of Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda, who has been at the helm of the Blue Hens since the inception of the program in 1990.

"We want to challenge ourselves and this year we play teams from seven different conferences not including the CAA. I'm also very excited about our home weekend Oct. 17-19 against Towson and James Madison when we will be celebrating our 25th year with some special events for alumni and friends of the program."
The Blue Hens' non-conference schedule features home games against local rivals Pennsylvania and Temple as well as a difficult weekend road trip to Army and first-time opponent Brown. The Blue Hens will also compete at the Navy Invitational Tournament in September.

"It will be great to renew our rivalry with Penn and competing in the Navy Invitational Tournament will be a great challenge for the team," said Grzenda. "Our trip to play Army and Brown will also be a challenging weekend. Every year we try to compile a schedule that will prepare us for play in the CAA, and I feel this year will be a great test."

Delaware went 9-7-3 overall last year and placed sixth in the CAA standings (3-3-2) before falling to eventual champion Northeastern in the CAA Tournament quarterfinals on penalty kicks.

The team lost just four seniors to graduation and returns a solid nucleus led by senior midfielder Allegra Gray (West Chester, Pa./Unionville HS), who earned third team NSCAA/Continental Tire All-Mid-Atlantic Region and first team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors in 2013.

Rising sophomore Natalie Zelenky (Chambersburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area), who registered eight points in her first season in a Blue Hen uniform in 2013, and rising junior Emily Market (Holland, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie), who finished with seven points last season, will be the top offensive returnees for Delaware. Market earned third team All-CAA honors a year ago while Zelenky was selected to the CAA All-Rookie team.

The Blue Hens will start the season with two home exhibition games against George Mason and George Washington on Aug. 14 and Aug. 16 respectively before kicking off the regular season with a home game against Monmouth on Aug. 22 in newly-named and renovated Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Senior Lindsay Prettyman Selected to CoSIDA District 2 All-Academic Track & Field Team

DATE:  June 2, 2014
sws:

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- University of Delaware senior Lindsay Prettyman earned yet another impressive honor Monday when she was named to the Capital One/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Division I Women's Cross Country/Track & Field District 2 All-Academic team.

Prettyman, who capped an outstanding career by competing at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Championships this past Thursday, earned her degree with honors at UD's Commencement exercises on Saturday.

A native of Newark, Del. (St. Mark's High School), Prettyman earned CoSIDA All-District honors for the second straight year and is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-American honors which will be announced later this month.

"Being selected to this team means so much to me because it really shows how much hard work I put in both on and off the track," said Prettyman. "This is a great ending to my career at Delaware."

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must carry a 3.3 or better grade point average and be a starter or key reserve. Candidates also must complete at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and have at least sophomore eligibility. The teams are selected by a vote of sports information directors. District 2 includes all NCAA Division I schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, and Kentucky.

An exercise science major with a 3.88 grade point average, Prettyman excelled in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field during an outstanding career. She was named the team Most Valuable Player in all three sports this past season, was selected as the UD Alumni Association Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year, and earned the most prestigious award bestowed on a UD female student-athlete - the Mary Ann Hitchens Award - which recognizes a senior letterwinner who has exhibited outstanding qualities of hard work, dedication, leadership, fairness, and striving for excellence.

"I am so very proud of Lindsay," said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. "Words cannot express how happy I am for Lindsay's successes in her four years here at the University of Delaware. Her contributions to the cross country and track and field programs both on and off the field have been tremendous. She has really set the stage. The main goal for any student-athlete is to get a good education and Lindsay has excelled above all odds. She is a true role model for future Blue Hens to follow."

Whether she was racing through the woods on the cross country course, running past the competition on the indoor and outdoor track oval, or putting in long hours towards her academic endeavors, Prettyman excelled in all her pursuits at the University of Delaware. As a three-sport standout in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field, she earned 12 letters, served as a team captain, set 10 school records, and won 29 meet titles during her remarkable tenure at UD.

As a four-year standout in cross country, she was named team Most Valuable Player three times and led the squad in 21 races, capturing three individual titles along the way. She culminated her career this past fall by becoming just the third woman in UD history and first since 1984 to compete at the NCAA Championships.

During the indoor season, Prettyman won five meet titles this past winter and earned All-East honors for the second time in her career when she finished second in the mile run at the ECAC championships in Boston. For her career, she set school records in the 800 meters, 1,000 meters, 3,000 meters, and 4 x 800 meter relay.

Prettyman was even more impressive on the outdoor track where she established school standards in the 800 meters, 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters, 4 x 800 meter relay, and the distance medley relay. In early May she led the Blue Hens to their first-ever CAA team title when she was named the meet's Outstanding Track Performer after winning both the 800 meter and 1,500 meter competitions. Her time in the 1,500 meters set a CAA meet record. She followed that up with a ninth place finish in the 800 meters at the ECAC Eastern championships and a 38th place showing in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA East Regionals this past week.

In the classroom, Prettyman carried a near perfect 3.88 grade point average, was named to the CAA Academic Honor Roll numerous times, and is a member of the National College Athlete Honor Society. She was recently admitted into the physical therapy graduate program at Delaware.

She has also played a key role in several community services initiatives, taking part in the Pigskin Pass for Special Olympics Delaware, serving at numerous youth track & field clinics, and taking a lead role in a shoe drive that collected over 600 pairs of shoes for the More Foundation Group that provides services for Africa and other underprivileged communities around the world.

Prettyman was joined on the CoSIDA District 2 All-Academic team by Ann Eason (Eastern Kentucky), Rachael Kotula (Robert Morris), Ashley Adams (Duquesne), Andrea Keklak (Georgetown), Meghan McGlinchey (LaSalle), Mercedes Yanora (Saint Joseph's), Megan Elgin (Rider), Emily de La Bruyere (Princeton), Kelly Williams (West Virginia), Katie Pratt (Saint Joseph's), Emma Slattery (Saint Joseph's), and Becky Yep (Maryland).

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Delaware football team has been picked No. 23 in the Athlon Sports Pre-season Top 25 poll that was announced recently by the publication.

Delaware, which will be led this fall by second-year head coach Dave Brock, joins the ranks of six other Colonial Athletic Association schools picked in the top 25, five of which are on the 2014 Delaware football schedule.

Delaware finished with a record of 7-5 in 2013, losing two games by three points or less. The Blue Hens narrowly missed out on the 20-team NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Tournament.

"We are excited to be recognized by Athlon in its pre-season poll," said Brock, who returns 13 starters from last year's squad. "We look forward to an exciting 2014 season as we continue to rebuild the Delaware football program. We are working hard in the summer program and look forward to reporting for camp the first weekend in August."

Among the Blue Hens' top returning players are All-CAA selections in senior wide receiver Michael Johnson, senior tight end Nick Boyle, senior linebacker Pat Callaway, and sophomore All-American punter Eric Enderson as well as senior quarterback Trent Hurley.

Athlon Sports is the first major pre-season poll to include Delaware in its Top 25 ranking as the Hens were not ranked in the Lindy's and Sporting News polls announced earlier this month. The Sports Network media poll and the FCS coaches poll will be announced in August.

Eastern Washington came out ahead of three-time defending national champion North Dakota State ? which graduated 24 seniors - to take the top spot in the Athlon poll. New Hampshire was the highest CAA school in the rankings at No. 4.

Other CAA schools included in the poll were Villanova at No. 8, 2013 national runner up Towson at No. 10, William & Mary at No. 15, Richmond at No. 18, and James Madison at No. 22. Maine, the 2013 CAA champion, was left off all three pre-season polls.

The CAA was well represented in the Athlon poll, putting seven teams in the top 25, the most among the 14 NCAA FCS conferences. The Missouri Valley Conference ranked second as it had five teams ranked in the pre-season top 25.

Delaware will face five teams from the Athlon pre-season poll this fall as the Blue Hens will take on No. 4 New Hampshire on Nov. 15 in Durham, N.H.; No. 8 Villanova on Nov. 22 at Delaware Stadium; No. 10 Towson on Oct. 18 at Delaware Stadium; No. 15 William & Mary on Oct. 25 in Williamsburg, Va.; and No. 22 James Madison on Sept. 27 in Harrisonburg, Va.

Delaware will travel to Heinz Field to take on Atlantic Coast Conference contender University of Pittsburgh in the first-ever matchup between the two schools in the season opener Aug. 30 followed by the home opener the following week vs. in-state foe Delaware State at Delaware Stadium.

Great season ticket packages for Delaware's seven-game home schedule are on sale now at www.bluehens.com or by calling 302-831-2257.

DOVER, Del. -- Blue Hen senior Davon Usher had another stellar outing with 23 points and eight rebounds as the University of Delaware men's basketball team used a big second half to post an 80-70 victory over intrastate rival Delaware State Monday night at Memorial Hall.

Usher also handed out a season-high six assists and went 10 of 10 from the foul line for the Blue Hens, who improved to 3-3 on the season. Jarvis Threatt added 17 points and six rebounds, while Kyle Anderson reached double figures for the fifth straight game with 12 points on 4 of 6 long range shooting.

Carl Baptiste was the fourth Blue Hen in double figures with 10 points, while freshman Cazmon Hayes came off the bench to contribute a season-high nine points.

Kendall Gray scored 19 points on 8 of 11 shooting for the Hornets, who dropped their fourth straight game while dropping to 1-4 on the year. Casey Walker added 17 points on the night, while Tyshawn Bell chipped in with 12.

The Blue Hens, who improved to 6-1 in seven all-time trips to Dover, reached the 80-point mark for the fifth consecutive game.

After the Blue Hens took an early 6-4 lead on a pair of Anderson three-pointers, the Hornets used a 9-0 run to go in front 13-6 at the 12:44 mark of the first half. Delaware countered with a seven-point spurt to knot the game at 15-15, and following a Hornets basket, Threatt and Usher scored inside to put the Blue Hens back on top with eight and a half minutes on the clock.

Delaware would go without a field goal for the next seven minutes, but remained in front due to 9 of 10 free throw shooting during that stretch. The margin was a single point following a Bell layup with 1:35 left but two Devonne Pinkard free throws, a Baptiste layup and an Usher jumper just before the buzzer give Delaware its largest lead of the half at 32-25.

The Blue Hens stormed out of the gate in the second period, as two Baptiste baskets were followed by another Anderson triple as Delaware extended the advantage to 39-25 and forced a Hornets time out with 18:16 to play.

UD was still up 43-31 on a Baptiste layup but Delaware State erupted for an 8-0 run, pulling within 43-39 on a Walker layup at the 14:40 mark. However the Blue Hens immediately answered, as Threatt scored inside before Usher buried a three-pointer to increase the advantage back to nine with 13 and a half minutes to go.

Four minutes later Usher buried a triple to extend the margin to double figures, while a Hayes putback made it a 57-45 game with 7:55 remaining. UD continued to extend the lead, as three-pointers by Threatt, Usher and Hayes on consecutive possessions put Delaware in front 71-55 with 4:20 minutes to play.

The Hornets made one last run, as an 8-0 Delaware State run cut the Blue Hens' lead to 73-66 at the 1:34 mark. But the Hornets would not get closer, as Delaware hit 5 of 6 free throws from there.

"It wasn't the prettiest game, but we will learn from it," said Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "We weren't as sharp down the stretch as we need to be, but I'd rather learn from a win than a loss. Davon (Usher) has a very high basketball IQ, and everybody feeds off him due to his energy and positive attitude. I was really happy to see Cazmon (Hayes) take advantage of his minutes tonight as well."

Game Notes:

? Delaware improved to 11-3 all-time against Delaware State

? UD, which leads the CAA in three-point shooting, went 9 of 19 from behind the arc

? The Blue Hens held a 38-30 rebounding advantage

Effort Falls Just Short as University of Delaware Men¹s Basketball Drops 84-80
Thriller at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The
University of Delaware men's basketball team battled Big East opponent Villanova
even through 37 minutes, but a late seven-point Wildcats run gave Villanova a
hard-fought 84-80 victory over the Blue Hens Friday night at The
Pavilion.

Delaware, which had its
two-game winning streak snapped while falling to 2-3 on the year, trailed 74-65
with 5:45 remaining before roaring back. Following a Jarvis Threatt
three-pointer, the Wildcats' Daniel Ochefu converted a layup to put Villanova up
eight with 4:26 on the clock. But after Kyle Anderson drained a three-pointer,
Davon Usher scored inside and then buried a deep triple of his own to knot the
contest at 76-76 with 3:02 left.

However the Wildcats, who
improved to 4-0 on the year, took control with the pivotal 7-0 spurt. JayVaughn
Pinkston opened the run with a three-point play, and after two Ryan Arcidiacono
free throws, Pinkston added two foul shots to make it an 83-76 game with 37
seconds to play. Threatt scored a layup for the Blue Hens to end the spurt, but
Delaware would not seriously threaten from there.

The Blue Hens, utilizing a
six-man rotation, got another big effort from Usher, as the senior scored a
game-high 27 points while going 5 of 10 from three-point range. Anderson
contributed 17 points including four triples, while Threatt added 16 points and
dished out a career-best eight assists for the third consecutive game. Carl
Baptiste was the fourth UD player in double figures with 13 points, while he
paced the squad with eight rebounds.

JayVaughn Pinkston scored a
season-high 26 points including a 10 of 11 performance from the line to lead the
Wildcats, who are receiving votes in both of the national Top 25 polls this week
.James Bell contributed 16 points, while Darrun Hilliard added 15 and
Arcidiacono chipped in 14. Ochefu collected a game-high 11 rebounds as the
Wildcats held a 45-32 edge on the boards, leading to a 22-9 advantage in second
chance points.

"We have a tough group of
guys, and they have a significant amount of confidence regardless of who we are
playing," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "We wanted to have a
chance with under four minutes left and we accomplished that, but we just
couldn't make enough plays down the stretch. This was another step for our
program; we got better tonight, we just have to keep raising the
bar."

Delaware connected on six of
its first 10 shots from the field and took an early 12-6 lead over the Wildcats
4:12 into the contest. However Villanova quickly answered with six straight
points, and regained the lead at 19-18 on a jumper by Arcidiacono.

The Wildcats later used a
9-0 run to go up eight, but the Blue Hens countered with 12 consecutive points
of their own to go in front 34-30 on a Devonne Pinkard three-pointer. Bell ended
the spurt with a jumper for the Wildcats, but Threatt and Baptiste answered with
buckets at the other end to put Delaware up 38-32 at the 4:19 mark. However
Villanova closed the half with an 11-2 surge of its own, as a Bell triple put
the Wildcats up 43-40 at the break.

After falling behind by four
points early in the second period, the Blue Hens battled back to take a 52-49
lead at the 15:52 mark following a four-point play by Usher.

Delaware led 54-50 after a
Threatt jumper, but the Wildcats used an 8-0 run to go back in front 58-54 on a
three-point play by Josh Hart.

The Blue Hens responded to
knot the contest at 60-60, before Villanova countered with a 6-0 run to take a
66-60 advantage and force a UD time out with 8:38 to play.

The lead grew to as much as
nine but Delaware would not go away, exploding for the 11-2 run that pulled the
Blue Hens even with three minutes to play. However the Wildcats answered with
the 7-0 spurt of their own to take the lead for good.

Game Notes:

? Delaware fell to 0-12
against Villanova, including losses in each of the last five years

? Tonight's four-point
contest was the closest in series history

? Threatt is averaging 21.3
points and 8.0 assists over his last three games

? Baptiste and Anderson each
reached double figures for the fourth straight game

? Delaware limited the
Wildcats to just 5 of 25 shooting from behind the arc

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Editor-The Pavalion-Villanova University-Villanova, PA-Friday, November 22, 2013: The Villanova Wildcats improve their record to 4-0 on the season behind the 26 point performance of Jayvaughn Pinkston, 16 by James Bell, 15 by Darrun Hilliard, 14 by Ryan Arcidiacono improve their record to 4-0 as they defeated the Delaware Blue Hens at 2-3 by an 84-80 score.

Monte Ross University of Delaware Mens Basketball Coach: "I thought it was a very entertaining game for 40 minutes and told our squad that I was proud of them as they brought a lot of good energy in the game it wasn't a secret that we can't score the basketball and went against a competitive Villanova defensive team that made a couple of turns in the game where they went on a run I would like to congratulate Jay Wright he has a good ball club." "When you have a person kind JayVaughn Pinkston he is a good physical force in there those guys have been through the wars and they understand when they need to make plays in those situations but our squad bounced back from certain situations and I've talked to our guys about how to play and also to respond on the runs we don't lack confidence if you saw Jarvis shot 1 for 5 in the first half we have guys that are tough and have Carl Baptiste have developed into good ball players they did a good job in the first half and got scittery in the second half pleased his (Carl) efforts and development overall and Jarvis and the rest of his teammates tell Carl to post up and he does just that." these guys in shootaround today my biggest concern from the Richmond game I told them we are ready to come here are to win the game in the last couple of years we weren't ready get us to the last 4 minutes my squad did it I was proud for getting to tha point." We didn't win another step in our progression in our game it is a marathon not a sprint and we have to continue to raise the bar and where the bar is set to play at that level"

[/B]
Jay Wright Villanova Head Coach: "Give Monte Ross and the Delaware Blue Hens a lot of credit they played great Jarvis Threatt controlled the game well for them in the first half he shot 1 for 5 and had 8 assists Davon Usher hit big shots for them and Kyle Anderson did well along with Kyle Baptiste was good in the first half they did well we didn't play that well I was proud of our squad on how we battled Delaware down the stretch and played the best basketball against the Hens and my players know how good they are we have some veterans who have stepped up down the stretch." "Daniel Ochafu contributed with 6 points and 11 rebounds he did a lot of good things along with 5 turnovers and my leader Jayvaughn Pinkston did great on our inside game as he was like a beast out there when you have a game like that he went 5 for 25 in his last 3 games for us." "Kyle Anderson kills us every year I enjoy him he is like a sniper he is ready to shoot the ball when he catches it the only way you can guard him is with Threatt and Baptiste that is why I think they have a good ballclub."

Delaware in defeat was led by Devon Usher with 27 points, Kyle Anderson with 17, 16 by Jarvis Threatt and 13 by Carl Baptiste.

NEWARK, Del. ? The University of Delaware knocked down a season-high 10 three-pointers and got double figure scoring from three different players en route to a 72-58 victory over Monmouth Tuesday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) hit a career-best five three-pointers and finished with 15 points while freshman Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) added four three-pointers and 14 points. Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) contributed 12 points and eight rebounds as the Blue Hens (3-1) picked up their second straight game.

Monmouth (0-3) got 20 points from forward Shira Shecht and a double double of 16 points and 10 rebounds from Chevannah Paalvast.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Hawks took a one-point lead before Delaware rattled off eight straight points to go up, 22-15. The Blue Hens eventually took an 18-point advantage at the break at 41-23.

Monmouth opened the second half on an 11-2 run to come within six at the 14:23 mark, but UD bounced back quickly and took a 58-40 lead over the next four minutes.

In the remaining 10 minutes of the game, Delaware never led by less than 12 points en route to the 72-58 win.

POST-GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Tina Martin ? "I wasn't worried about a hangover [from Friday night], the biggest thing that I was concerned with was that defensively we have to be a solid team and get better. We ran out to a big lead and then everybody just kind of took a sigh and we started doing things that are uncharacteristic of how we are suppose to play. We gave them some open looks and let them come right back in to the game and as a young team, yes, we're happy we won, but they have to learn that defense has to be our staple. When we get later in to the season, there are no possessions that you can take off. We let a team crawl back in to it when we had the opportunity to slam the door."

Senior tri-captain Kelsey Buchanan ? "We have people who are talented and can put the ball in the basket, so we need to look for everyone to be in double figures if possible. That'll force defenses to play certain people and then others will be open. I think we've improved mentally over the last four games. We've gotten our heads straight and have learned what the physicality of college basketball looks like, especially for some of the younger players."

Sophomore Courtni Green ? "It was very important to come out strong today. Just because we got the win over Wake Forest doesn't mean that we can relax. We still have to be upbeat and play defense. On offense, it doesn't matter your age or grade, if you can shoot the ball, Coach wants you to shoot the ball."

Freshman Erika Brown ? "I think it's really good when Court [Green] and I are in rhythm because the defense will think that Court is the shooter and then I'll knock them down and then they think I'm the shooter. Now we're both hitting threes and the other team is confused and don't know what to do. I come in every game, play hard and try to contribute as much as I can for my team to win."

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- All five Blue Hens starters scored in double figures as the University of Delaware men's basketball team won its second game in three days with an 89-74 triumph over Army Tuesday night at Christl Arena.

Delaware, which improved to 2-2 on the year, had yet another impressive offensive outing as the Blue Hens narrowly missed reaching the 90-point mark for the third consecutive contest. UD shot 47.3 percent from the floor, knocked down seven three-pointers, and held a 44-35 rebounding advantage in the all-around effort.

Army, which dropped to 1-3 on the campaign, shot a respectable 45.3 percent but was hampered by a 2 of 21 performance from behind the arc.

Blue Hen junior point guard Jarvis Threatt again led the way for Delaware with 21 points, while he dished out a career-high eight assists for the second straight game to go with six rebounds and four steals. Davon Usher added 16 points and eight boards, while Kyle Anderson had another strong outing with 16 points and a season-high seven rebounds.

The Delaware post players were also extremely effective, as Carl Baptiste contributed 14 points and a season-high tying nine rebounds, while sophomore Marvin King-Davis set his career-bests by recording 13 points and nine rebounds while blocking three shots.

Kyle Wilson, Kevin Ferguson and Dylan Cox all scored 14 points to lead Army, with Ferguson grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds to record the double-double.

Delaware trailed 6-2 early but quickly erupted for a 15-4 run, capped with a three-pointer by Threatt that made it 17-10, and led the rest of the way. Two and a half minutes later consecutive three-pointers by Anderson and Devonne Pinkard made it a 23-13 game at the 8:58 mark, while the Blue Hen lead grew to as much as 29-17 on a Threatt dunk.

The Black Knights closed to within six late in the half, before Threatt followed his own miss in the final seconds as Delaware took a 38-30 lead into the break.

Although both teams started the second half strong, the Blue Hens scored on their first six possessions of the period and used a quick 7-0 run to extend the margin to 51-37 with 16:43 left and force an Army timeout.

UD's lead grew to 17 following an Usher free throw and a Baptiste jumper while an emphatic King-Davis dunk, a Threatt layup and an Anderson triple increased the margin to 63-40 with 12:21 to go.

The advantage grew to 74-48 at the 9:14 mark on an Anderson baseline jumper, and the Blue Hens went back up 26 at 78-52 on a Cazmon Hayes bucket with seven and a half minutes to play.

"No lead is safe with an Army team that shoots so many three-pointers, so we needed to do the necessary things to pull away, like playing solid defense and rebounding the basketball, and we did those things well tonight," said eighth-year Delaware head coach Monte Ross. "Our scoring balance can really be attributed to Jarvis, for the second straight game he really controlled the tempo and got everybody involved. Marvin and Carl hit some big shots for us tonight, and anytime you can get that production from your big guys, that just opens things up for the guards."

Game Notes:

? Delaware improved to 2-13 all-time vs. Army and notched its first victory in West Point

? The game was UD's first visit to West Point since Dec. 5, 1983

? Baptiste reached double figures for the third straight game

? Threatt surpassed the 20-point mark for the second consecutive game

SUBJECT: Backcourt Duo of Threatt, Anderson Leads University of Delaware Men's Basketball Team To 90-79 Road Victory at Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. -- Jarvis Threatt scored 27 points while Kyle Anderson added 24 as the University of Delaware men's basketball team posted a 90-79 road victory at Hampton Sunday afternoon at the HU Convocation Center.

The Blue Hens, who had suffered a pair of close two-point losses to open the season, picked up their first victory of the campaign while improving to 1-2 on the year. Hampton, which opened the season with wins over William & Mary and St. Peter's, dropped to 2-1 on the campaign.

Threatt's 27 points were a season-high, while he also added nine rebounds, a career-best eight assists and four steals in the all-around effort. Anderson set his career-high by pouring in 24 points, going 9 of 12 from the field including a perfect 6 of 6 from behind the arc.

Senior forward Carl Baptiste set his career-best for the second consecutive game with 15 points on the afternoon while sophomore Marvin King-Davis, making his first career start, tied his career-high with eight points. Davon Usher also had a solid performance for the Blue Hens, finishing with nine points, nine rebounds and six assists.

The Blue Hens, playing their first game without leading scorer Devon Saddler who is currently suspended from the team, were not affected offensively as Delaware shot 48.4 percent from the field, finished 8 of 11 from behind the arc and reached the 90-point mark for the second consecutive contest.

Du'Vaughn Maxwell paced the Pirates with 24 points on 10 of 16 shooting from the floor, while Deron Powers added 17 points and Emmanuel Okoroba notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Hampton led 12-10 early but the Blue Hens used an 8-0 run, culminated with two Anderson three-pointers, to go up 18-12 five and a half minutes into the game. Two minutes later Barnett Harris converted the first two field goals of his career to put UD up nine, while a Threatt jumper and three-pointer on consecutive possessions made it a 30-16 game at the 10:19 mark.

The lead remained in double figures for most of the half, and after the Pirates closed within nine, Usher scored in the final seconds to put Delaware up 45-34 at the break.

The Blue Hens opened the second half with a quick 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the day at 52-34 with 18:10 to play when Threatt found Anderson for a layup.

Later Anderson buried a three-pointer to make it 59-44, and after the Pirates closed within 10, another 7-0 Blue Hen spurt increased the margin to 68-51 and forced a Hampton time out with 12:37 remaining.

It was still a 70-53 game following yet another Anderson bucket, but Hampton scored eight consecutive points to get within single digits. Baptiste hit an 18-foot jumper to put Delaware back up 11, but the Pirates used another 8-0 run to make it a 74-71 game with seven minutes to play.

Hampton again clawed with three at 76-73, but Anderson buried his sixth three-pointer of the day before King-Davis converted a tip-in to up the Blue Hen advantage to 81-73 with four minutes to go. Baptiste then added a free throw and a jumper to put Delaware up 11, and the Blue Hens were not threatened from there.

"I thought Jarvis did a magnificent job of getting everybody involved and controlling the game," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "He really controlled the pace of the game and looked for his own shot as well. It was a phenomenal shooting effort by Kyle - he was really aggressive and looking for his shot. We also got across the board rebounding today, as we have all year. Anytime you can get a road win against a team that's 2-0, that's a big deal."

Game Notes:

? Delaware improved to 5-1 all-time against Hampton, with five straight wins

? The Blue Hens are now a perfect 3-0 at the HU Convocation Center

? Hampton had allowed just 64.0 points during its first two games

? Four different Blue Hens have scored at least 24 points during UD's last two games

? Delaware is back on the road Tuesday with a 7 p.m. tilt at Army

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Basketball Gets Glimps of Bright Future, Rallies to Defeat Wake Forest 71-61

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- On a night when the University of Delaware women's basketball team honored its glorious past, the Blue Hens got a nice look at its promising future.

Down by as many as nine points midway through the second half, the young Blue Hens rallied back in a big way and treated a crowd of 2,401 to a 71-61 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference visitor Wake Forest Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Senior forward Kelsey Buchanan led the way for Delaware with 22 points and nine rebounds, but the Blue Hens got big efforts from its younger players too as freshman guard Erika Brown scored 13 of her season-high 18 points in the second half, sophomore guard Courtni Green knocked down 12 points, and freshman forward Shanice Johnson contributed nine points and nine rebounds.

The Blue Hens (2-1) bounced back from a 70-58 loss to Temple in its home opener last Tuesday to down the Deamon Deacons (1-2) for the second straight year.

Wake Forest guard Chelsea Douglas was nearly unstoppable as she poured in a season-high 30 points, including 6 of 11 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Dearic Hamby added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Millesa Calicott added a career-high 11 points.

"This was a very good first step for this group," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "They listened, stayed together, and did a great job of staying within themselves. Our seniors did a great job and our young kids played really well too. Courtni (Green) is capable of making any shot on the court and is really coming into her own."

Delaware started the night by honoring the 2012-13 squad that went 32-4, won the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament for the second straight year, and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. Among the six seniors who came back to celebrate was WNBA Rookie of the Year Elena Delle Donne, a three-time All-American who finished her UD career last season as the No. 5 scorer in NCAA history with 3,309 points.

The Blue Hens trailed for almost the entire first half, going down by as many as seven points early and trailing 30-25 at the half. After the Hens rallied back to tie the game early in the second half at 35-35, Wake took control and grabbed a nine-point advantage at 44-35 with 12:30 remaining.

But Delaware caught fire, outscoring Wake Forest 24-7 over the next eight minutes to take a 59-51 lead with 5:40 left. Green and Brown each scored eight points during the run while Buchanan netted the final six. The Hens connected on 7 of 8 free throws over the final 1:18 to stay in front.

Delaware will return to action next Tuesday, Nov. 19, when the Hens host Monmouth at 7 p.m.

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond guard Kendall Anthony hit two free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining as the Spiders edged the University of Delaware men's basketball team, 71-69, in both teams' season-opener Friday night at the Robins Center.

The Blue Hens (0-1) trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, and were still down six with 2:46 remaining. But Delaware rallied, as Jarvis Threatt drained three free throws before Davon Usher buried a three-pointer from the right wing to pull the Blue Hens even with 1:18 to go.

Usher then made a steal at the other end, and following a UD timeout, Threatt was fouled on a drive to the basket with :30.2 to play. However Threatt missed a pair from the foul line, giving the Spiders (1-0) a final chance. Following a loose ball out of bounds with 2.3 seconds on the clock, UD guard Kyle Anderson was called for a holding foul.

Anthony then buried both foul shots, while Devon Saddler's three-pointer from just past half court bounced off the back rim.

Saddler, a first team Preseason All-CAA selection, led the Blue Hens with 17 points while Threatt, a second team preseason pick, added 14 points and hit 12 foul shots. Usher, a Mississippi Valley State transfer making his Blue Hen debut, posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Cedrick Lindsay paced Richmond with 20 points, while Alonzo Nelson-Ododa added 13 and Terry Allen contributed 11 for the Spiders.

Delaware nearly pulled out the victory despite shooting just 4 of 21 from three-point line, although the Blue Hens did connect on 27 of 37 free throws. Richmond was also off the mark from deep, as UD limited the Spiders to a 3 of 19 performance from behind the arc.

"Jarvis has proven time and time again that he's the guy we want at the free throw line, and he's iced many games for us from the line," said eighth-year Blue Hen head coach Monte Ross. "We did a good job of drawing fouls all night, but when you're on the road you have to make teams pay. If we do what we need to do from the line earlier, it doesn't come down to the end. We are an experienced group, and it says a lot about our team to come back twice in the second half."

Delaware used an early 9-1 run to take a 13-9 lead in the first half, and the game remained tight throughout the rest of the period before Richmond took a slim 32-31 edge into the break.

An Anderson three-pointer brought Delaware within a pair early in the second half, but Richmond quickly ran off seven consecutive points to go in front 45-36 and force a Blue Hen timeout with 17:03 remaining.

Delaware responded to hold the Spiders without a field goal for three and a half minutes but the Blue Hens went cold offensively themselves, as five straight Richmond points extended the lead back to double digits at 53-42 at the 11:12 mark following a Lindsay runner in the paint.

UD would not go away, as Usher converted a layup and then found Saddler inside to cap a 6-0 spurt and make it a 55-50 contest with 8:06 to play. The Blue Hens kept coming, as an Anderson three-pointer and a Saddler bucket put Delaware in front 61-59 with 5:08 on the clock.

The Blue Hens were again up two a half minute later, but Allen scored inside before Anthony drilled a three-pointer to put Richmond back on top, 66-63, at the 3:45 mark.

The Spiders' Derrick Williams added a free throw and a layup to increase the lead to six before the Blue Hens countered with six straight points to tie the contest, setting up the dramatic finish.

Game Notes:

? Delaware has lost eight straight season openers

? Marvin King-Davis went 8 of 8 from the foul line while tying his career-high with eight points

? Saddler needs 13 points to reach 1,700 for his career

? Richmond has won 14 straight season openers

? The Spiders held a 41-35 rebounding advantage

? The game marked the teams' first meeting since 1995

? Delaware plays its home opener Sunday vs. Charleston Southern at 2 p.m.

SUBJECT: Two-time Defending Champion University of Delaware Women's Basketball Squad Picked Fifth in CAA Preseason Poll; Richards on All-CAA Team

DATE: October 22, 2013

mh:

BALTIMORE, Md. ? Coming off of back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association championships, the University of Delaware women's basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the league's preseason poll, as announced Tuesday morning at the CAA Basketball Media Day.

Additionally, senior guard Akeema Richards (Baltimore, Md.) was chosen to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team.

James Madison, which returns three starters from last year's 25-11 team, was selected to win the 2014 CAA Women's Basketball title according to a vote of the league's head coaches. The Dukes were followed in the voting by Drexel, which captured the 2013 Women's National Invitation Tournament championship, Northeastern and Towson. The Blue Hens were followed by Hofstra and league newcomer College of Charleston. UNCW and William & Mary rounded out the poll in eighth and ninth place, respectively.

"When you've won two consecutive championships, it certainly makes you want more," remarked Delaware head coach Tina Martin, who is in her 18th season with the Hens. "On paper, all of the rankings look about right, but the bottom line is, they don't give out rings for preseason rankings. The rings are given out at the end, and that's what matters."

The Blue Hens, who are currently amidst a 42-game CAA winning streak (regular season and tournament), dating to the 2011-12 season, lost seven seniors to graduation, including a total of over 6,500 points, 3,200 rebounds and 1,100 assists. A squad that reached the NCAA Sweet 16 a season ago, Delaware will field 11 freshmen and sophomores in 2013-14 with just three juniors and seniors.

"We have a lot of growing to do and we certainly have to catch up on experience," Martin commented. "This season is new and fresh and we're going to take it with that approach. There are a lot of question marks right now for us, but at the same time, any new challenge makes for an exciting experience for both the players and coaches. The group that we have right now is excited and they want to prove that they can compete and play well. They're hungry to show the conference that we can still compete and try to win a third straight championship."

Richards, the team's lone returning starter, averaged 5.5 points overall while scoring 6.2 points in league play last season. Additionally, Richards dished out 1.8 assists per contest last year.

"Akeema is going to have to change her role a little bit this season," stated Martin. "Certainly, she has to step up and be more of a vocal leader, but she will also have to take some of the offensive burden. She has a great pull-up jumpshot and has a good feel for the game. Akeema is going to wear many, many hats this season."

JMU's Kirby Burkholder was selected as the CAA Preseason Player of the Year.

The league's television schedule was also announced at Media Day, with the Blue Hens being featured once during regular season action via CAA-TV and Comcast SportsNet when Delaware hosts Northeastern on Thursday, Jan. 30.

The 2014 CAA Women's Basketball Championship will be held March 13-16 at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Track & Field Standout Lindsay Prettyman Earns CoSIDA Academic All-American Honors

DATE:  June 26, 2014
sws:

AUSTIN, Tex. -- A month after earning her degree from the University of Delaware, former Blue Hen track & field and cross country standout Lindsay Prettyman continues to earn prestigious awards from her collegiate career.

Prettyman, who capped her senior year by leading the Blue Hens to the Colonial Athletic Association outdoor track & field team title in early May, was honored for her outstanding academic efforts Thursday as she earned Capital One Third Team Academic All-America® Division I Women's Track and Field/Cross Country honors presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A total of 45 student-athletes were honored on the first, second, and third teams, which were selected from a vote of a national panel of collegiate sports information directors. Prettyman was the only CAA student-athlete honored on the three teams.

A native of nearby Newark, Del. (St. Mark's High School), Prettyman becomes just the third Blue Hen women's track & field performer to earn Academic All-American honors, joining two-time first team selection Alison Farrance (1985-86) and 1983 second team selection Pam Hohler. Prettyman is the first UD student-athlete to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American honors in any sport since Elena Delle Donne was named the Academic All-American of the Year for Women's Basketball in 2013.

"I am honored to receive such a prestigious award," said Prettyman, who earned a spot on the national All-American ballot after being named to the District 2 first team for the second straight year earlier this month. "It's so rewarding to see all of my hard work paying off. Words can't describe how much I am going to miss representing the Blue Hens on the track and out on the course."

Prettyman, who capped an outstanding career by competing at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Championships last month, earned her degree in exercise science with honors and concluded her career with a 3.88 grade point average. She will attend graduate school in physical therapy at the University of Delaware this fall.

"I am so proud to see the many honors that Lindsay has received this year," said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. "To earn Academic All-American honors and to excel in so many other areas during her four years at the University of Delaware just goes to show that anything is attainable with hard work and dedication. I wish her continued success in her future endeavors."

Prettyman excelled in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field during an outstanding career.

In May she led the Blue Hens to their first-ever CAA team title when she was named the meet's Outstanding Track Performer after winning both the 800 meter and 1,500 meter competitions. Her time in the 1,500 meters set a CAA meet record. She followed that up with a ninth place finish in the 800 meters at the ECAC Eastern championships and a 38th place showing in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA East Regionals.

In the classroom, Prettyman carried a near perfect 3.88 grade point average, was named to the CAA Academic Honor Roll numerous times, and is a two-year member of the National College Athlete Honor Society.

DATE:  June 27, 2014
sws:

RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware women's outdoor track & field head coach Wendy McFarlane earned an impressive honor Friday when she was named the Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year for the 2014 season.

McFarlane, who led the Blue Hens to their first-ever CAA title back in May, was selected from a vote of the league coaches. She was among several people honored by the CAA as the league announced its end-of-the-year women's track & field honors and all-league citations.

In addition to McFarlane, William & Mary senior Elaina Bouris was named Female Athlete of the Year for the second straight year and Northeastern freshman Lucy Young was named CAA Rookie of the Year.

"I am humbled and grateful to receive such an honor," said McFarlane, who also serves as head coach of the UD cross country and indoor track & field teams. "On behalf of my staff and athletes who have made this award possible, I would like to thank the coaches who voted and the CAA committee for acknowledging our success this season. A championship title is hard to attain and would not be possible without the support of a hard working and dedicated staff. Thanks to Larry Pratt, Tim Brock, Terrence Gadson, Eddie Kolofer, Marlene McIlhenny, and Mel Boldt, and to our student-athletes who have worked tirelessly for our successes this season."

McFarlane, who closed out her sixth season at the helm of the Blue Hens this spring, was selected as the Coach of the Year in women's track and field for the first time after guiding Delaware to its first CAA championship. The Blue Hens captured six individual event titles and compiled 158 points to win the league championship by 20 points. Also during the season, the Hens captured team titles at the Delaware Invitational, Delaware Classic, and James Madison Invitational and placed second at the Navy Invitational.

After leading the Delaware women's track & field teams to fifth place finishes at the CAA Outdoor Meet in 2011 and 2012, she guided the team to a second place finish in 2013 before the Hens won it all this past spring. She becomes the first UD women's track & field coach to earn league Coach of the Year honors.

In addition to the top honors, the CAA also announced its all-league teams based on finishes at the CAA meet.

Earning All-CAA honors for the Blue Hens were Lindsay Prettyman (800m, 1,500m), Katie Deinert (10,000m), Latoya James (100m hurdles), Breanna Nicholson (4 x 400m relay), Alexandra Carroll (4 x 400m relay), Kelley Donovan (4 x 400m relay), Chelsi Campbell (4 x 400m relay), Kelsey Evancho (high jump), Haley Gorenflo (pole vault), Amira Idris (long jump, triple jump), Paige Morris (triple jump), Alana Pantale (shot put, discus, javelin), and Monica Hagenauer (hammer).

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Football Places Enderson, Johnson on The Sports Network Pre-Season All-American Team

DATE:  July 1, 2014
sws:

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware and the Colonial Athletic Association were well-represented on The Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision Pre-Season All-American teams announced Tuesday by TSN.

Blue Hen sophomore punter Eric Enderson (Phoebus HS/Hampton, Va.) earned second team honors while senior wide receiver and kick returner Michael Johnson (Gainesville/Gainesville, Fla.) gained a spot on the third team in the all-purpose category. The CAA led all national conferences with 15 players honored followed by the Big Sky with 13 citations.

The duo led Delaware to a 7-5 record under first-year head coach Dave Brock last fall. The Blue Hens, who will open pre-season camp in early August, look to contend for the CAA title this fall as they welcome back 13 starters, including four who earned all-league honors.

No player in the history of Delaware football had a better season punting than Enderson in 2013 when the redshirt freshman ranked among the nation's top punters. After a slow start over the first three games, he was the model of consistency and led the CAA in punting average (45.0 per punt), punting yardage (2,701), and punts over 50 yards (22 - no other CAA player had more than 13), and ranked No. 2 in punts inside the opponent 20-yard line (20).

His 45.0 yard average, which ranked No. 3 nationally, shattered the UD single season record of 42.8 set by Gene Vadas in 1991. Enderson earned a slew of post-season honors in 2013 as he was named honorable mention College Sporting News All-American, second team Phil Steele Freshman All-American, second team College Sports Journal Freshman All-American, and second team All-CAA.

"Eric had a breakout year as a redshirt freshman last year," said Brock. "We are looking for him to maintain and improve upon that performance this fall. He really became a weapon for us on our special teams, which is one of the most critical parts of our team."

Johnson proved to be one of the league's most dynamic players, whether it be catching passes, running the ball, or returning kickoffs. He ranked second in the CAA in all-purpose yardage, piling up 1,800 yards for an average of 150.0 per game.

He led the Blue Hens in receiving with 60 catches for 1,035 yards and nine touchdowns, rushed for 159 yards and two scores, and returned 20 kickoffs for an average of 20.9 yards per return. He had six plays go for 60 yards or more during the season and led all CAA receivers with nine touchdowns while ranking third in yardage and seventh in receptions.

"Michael proved to be one of the top wide receivers not only in the CAA but in the nation last year," said Brock. "We expect him to build on his junior year and again be an explosive playmaker and one of the top guys in the nation at his position."

In addition to Enderson and Johnson, other CAA players listed on the pre-season All-American team were first teamers in Towson fullback Emmanuel Holder, New Hampshire wide receiver R.J. Harris, and Towson cornerback Tye Smith; second team picks in William & Mary wide receiver Tre McBride, New Hampshire offensive lineman Mike Coccia, Richmond offensive lineman Austin Gund, William & Mary defensive end Mike Reilly, and William & Mary linebacker Luke Rhodes; and third teamers in Villanova quarterback John Robertson, Richmond wide receiver Stephen Barnette, Richmond defensive tackle Evan Kelly, Towson safety Christian Carpenter, and James Madison safety Dean Marlowe.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Track & Field Standout Lindsay Prettyman Named CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year

DATE:  July 2, 2014
sws:

RICHMOND, Va. -- Former University of Delaware women's cross country and track & field standout Lindsay Prettyman placed her name on yet another prestigious award Wednesday as she was named the Colonial Athletic Association Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2013-14 athletics season.

Prettyman (St. Mark's HS/Newark, Del.), who in May earned a spot on the Capitol One/CoSIDA Academic All-American third team, was joined by William & Mary senior swimmer Andrew Strait, who was named the CAA Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The awards were chosen by the league's media relations directors.

The conference selected a Scholar-Athlete of the Year in each of its 21 championship sports this season, and those winners were placed on the ballot for the Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. All of the winners were a starter or important reserve on their team and had a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher. Five of the finalists were conference Players of the Year and 18 of them received all-conference honors in their respective sports. Among the other candidates for the award were Delaware's Allegra Gray (women's soccer) and Baralee Theinthong (women's golf).

Prettyman's honor marks the third straight year that the University of Delaware has produced the CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year as former UD All-American basketball player and current WNBA star Elena Delle Donne earned the award in both 2012 and 2013.

Delaware becomes the first CAA school to produce a CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year three straight years since the awards began in 2002-03. Prettyman is also just the second cross country and track runner to be honored as the CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Towson's Brandi Gervais, who was honored in 2011.

"We are so proud of Lindsay and all that she has accomplished not only as an outstanding athlete but as a first-class student," said Delaware women's cross country and track & field head coach Wendy McFarlane. "There are so many great student-athletes throughout the CAA and for her to be chosen above the rest just shows how impressive her season and career have been and how hard she has worked to be exceptional in both areas."

Prettyman capped an outstanding career by competing at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Championships last month, earned her degree in exercise science with honors and concluded her career with a 3.88 grade point average. She was named to the CAA Academic Honor Roll numerous times during her career and is a two-year member of the National College Athlete Honor Society. She will attend graduate school in physical therapy at the University of Delaware this fall.

She excelled in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field during an outstanding career.

As a four-year standout in cross country, Prettyman was named team Most Valuable Player three times and led the squad in 21 races, capturing three individual titles along the way.

For her career, she set school indoor records in the 800 meters, 1,000 meters, 3,000 meters, and 4 x 800 meter relay.

Prettyman was even more impressive on the outdoor track where she established school standards in the 800 meters, 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters, 4 x 800 meter relay, and the distance medley relay.
