The Big 12 showdown will begin at 7 p.m. at UVU's newly named and renovated Lockhart Arena (PE Building).Friday's conference opener will be streamed live onWolverineGreen.com/watchwhile live results will also be available by visitingTrackWrestling.com."We're excited for Friday's dual," head coachGreg Williamssaid. "Air Force has done a nice job of recruiting over the past couple of years and has a solid lineup. It's going to be a good battle and we're hoping that we'll pick right up where we left off (against Oregon State)."The Wolverines (2-2, 0-0 Big 12) will enter Friday's conference opener off of a strong showing at the 10th annual UVU Open last Saturday. For the second consecutive year, six Utah Valley grapplers won titles at the home tournament. HeavyweightDustin Dennisonled the group by winning the second UVU Open championship of his career, while unattached WolverinesHeston Woolsey(125 pounds),Taylor LaMont(133),Matthew Ontiveros(149),Kieffer Taylor(174) andGary Jantzer(184) all won their first.Dennison, LaMont and Jantzer topped the group by going a combined 14-0 at the UVU Open. LaMont and Janzter each finished with identical 5-0 records, while Dennison posted a perfect 4-0 mark.In Utah Valley's last dual meet, the Wolverines managed to come from behind to defeat the 23rd-ranked and five-time defending Pac-12 Champion Oregon State Beavers by criteria (17-16). After dropping the first four matches of the evening to fall behind by a score of 13-0, UVU managed to reel off five straight crucial victories to take a 16-13 advantage. OSU heavyweight Cody Crawford then capped the dual with a 2-1 decision over Dennison to deadlock the team score at 16-all after all 10 bouts. The contest then went to criteria and the Wolverines managed to hold the tiebreaker thanks to the most individual match points (78-72) to record the victory over the ranked Beavers.Raider Lofthouse(157),Koy Wilkinson(165),Kimball Bastian(174),Will Sumner(184) andTanner Orndorff(197) all recorded individual victories for UVU in the win over Oregon State, which included a much-needed major decision from Bastian and a upset victory from Orndorff. The redshirt freshman Ondorff managed to help the Wolverines seal the win by capping UVU's five-match winning streak with an 8-4 decision victory over the 2016 NCAA qualifier and then 14th-ranked Corey Griego, while Bastian managed record an eight-point third period en route to pulling out an 11-3 major over Weston Dobler.HeavyweightsJordan Karstand Dennison pace UVU on the season with respective 21-5 and 15-6 records, while the 197-pound Orndorff is next with a 15-10 clip and 174-pounder Bastian will enter Friday's contest with a 14-9 ledger.ABOUT AIR FORCEThe Air Force Academy will come to Orem with a 4-1 overall record and Friday's contest will too mark its 2016-17 Big 12 opener. AFA will enter the weekend showdown off of a 3-0 outing at the Tracy Borah Duals last weekend in Gunnison, Colorado, with a trio of wins over smaller division foes Simon Fraser (37-6), Cal Baptist (22-15) and Western State Colorado (31-9). The Falcons also hold a 29-9 victory on the year over UNC Pembroke and a 29-6 setback to No. 9 North Carolina State. Air Force went 8-6 overall a season ago and 2-3 in its first season of competition in Big 12 Conference duals. The Falcons return a pair of former NCAA qualifiers on their 2016-17 roster, in 125-pounder Drew Romero and 133-pounder Dylan Hyder. Romero advanced to nationals a year ago while Hyder punched his ticket as a freshman in 2012. Hyder is off to an 11-9 record this season while Romero is 9-7. Fellow 197-pound Falcons Anthony McLaughlin and Parker Hines too are having strong seasons, as McLaughlin holds a 13-6 record and Hines holds a 9-4 clip.ALL-TIME HISTORY VS. BLACKSBURG – The fifth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team head to the Tidewater region this weekend for the 37th Annual Virginia Duals where they will open with Kent State at 11 a.m. and Lock Haven at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13.

All matches from the Virginia Duals will be streamed live on TrackWrestling.com with a subscription. Fans can also follow along on Twitter, @VT_Wrestling.

The Hokies (7-1, 1-0 ACC) are coming off a 2-0 weekend that saw road victories at Princeton and in their ACC opener at North Carolina. With those wins and losses from a couple of higher-ranked programs, the Hokies moved up a spot to No. 6 in the NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll. It’s Tech’s highest ranking of the season and the highest since finishing fourth in the final NWCA Poll at the end of last season. The Hokies have won three duals in a row since narrowly falling to No. 5 Missouri, 23-19, in Columbia on Nov. 20.

SCOUTING THE FIELD
• Lock Haven enters the weekend with a 3-3 record and a 2-1 mark in PSAC play.
• The Bald Eagles were faced with a tough non-conference schedule that included a 20-18 victory over Maryland on Nov. 20 at the Cavalier Duals.
• Redshirt junior Ronnie Perry leads the lowerweights at 141 pounds where he holds a 21-5 record and is currently ranked No. 17 by FloWrestling.
• Virginia Tech heavyweight Ty Walz, who has faced one of the toughest individual schedules in collegiate wrestling this season, will once again be tested against Lock Haven’s Thomas Haines, who’s ranked 16th this week by InterMat.
• The Bald Eagles hold a 6-1 edge in the all-time series Hokies with their lone defeat coming in the last meeting – a 22-19 Tech victory at Cassell Coliseum on Jan. 16.
• Kent State enters the weekend at 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the MAC.
• The Golden Flashes have dropped their last two duals, a 22-17 loss to Gardner-Webb on Dec. 16 and a 22-19 loss to Chattanooga on Dec. 18.
• The Hokies narrowly lead the all-time series with Kent State, 5-4, and won the last meeting, 29-15, at the 2015 Virginia Duals on Jan. 9.

EPPERLY EARNS CO-ACC WRESTLER OF THE WEEK HONORS
• Redshirt junior Zach Epperly was named Co-ACC Wrestler of the Week with North Carolina’s Joey Ward after after defeating two top 20 opponents over the weekend.
• Epperly, ranked second nationally by InterMat and FloWrestling, scored a major decision (12-4) over 17th-ranked Jonathan Schlieffer of Princeton, in leading the Hokies to a 30-11 win over the Tigers.
• He then scored an 8-2 decision over seventh-ranked Ethan Ramos of North Carolina in Tech’s 28-8 win over the Tar Heels in the Hokies’ ACC season-opener

HOKIES HISTORY AT THE VIRGINIA DUALS
• Virginia Tech has won two of the last three Virginia Duals after falling to No. 18 Iowa State, 16-14, the finals last season.
• The Hokies, ranked No. 5 at the time, rolled through the Citadel, Bucknell and Arizona State en route to a rematch of their first dual of the season.
• Tech had topped then-No. 13 Iowa State, 32-3, at Cassell on Nov. 17, 2015 but they prevented a Hokies three-peat.
• Overall, the Hokies have a 26-23 record at the Virginia Duals entering their 15th appearance at the tournament this weekend.

HAMPTON, Va. - The fifth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team blitzed through its opening day competition at the 37th Annual Virginia Duals on Friday at the Hampton Coliseum. The Hokies (9-1, 1-0 ACC) topped Kent State, 41-3, before defeating Lock Haven, 35-6.

With the wins, Tech advances to the semifinals where they will face North Dakota State, the winner of the York River Pool, at 2 p.m. tomorrow. The winner of that dual will face the winner of No. 19 Arizona State vs. No. 15 Oklahoma in the championship match at 8:30 p.m.

“I liked the entertainment value that we brought today, I thought our guys came out and really, really hustled,” said head coach Kevin Dresser. “Obviously a lot of good things happened. We have to assess a couple of things but from a wrestling standpoint I think we’re doing pretty well. Be sure to come out and see us tomorrow if you’re in the area.”

The win over Kent State marked career-victory No. 150 for Dresser, who is in his 11th season at the helm of the Hokie wrestling program. Jerry Cheynet, who led the program for 22 years, holds the school record for career victories with 188. After recording two tech falls on Friday, senior Joey Dance is now one win shy of 100 career victories. One win tomorrow would make him only the 10th wrestler in program history to eclipse 100 wins.

Hokies 41, Kent State 3

Dance and redshirt junior Dennis Gustafson, wrestling in his first dual at 133 pounds this season, registered consecutive technical falls that set the tone early and gave the Hokies an early 10-0 lead. After the Golden Flashes picked up a decision at 141, the Hokies clinched the next three bouts by decision to extend their advantage to 19-3.

As has been the case for most of the season, the Tech upperweights dominated, starting with a pin from redshirt junior Zach Epperly with five second left in the bout at 174. Redshirt sophomore Zack Zavatasky’s 16-0 tech fall at 184 led the way for another fall from redshirt junior Jared Haught at 197 pounds. A 22-7 TF from redshirt senior heavyweight Ty Walz capped a dominating 41-3 victory.

Hokies 35, Lock Haven 6

Dance and Gustafson once again anchored the Hokies by picking up bonus points at 125 and 133, respectively, and giving the Hokies a 9-0 lead. Injury forced redshirt junior Kevin Norstrem to default at 141 but Chishko, battling through a stomach sickness, countered with a 8-3 decision at 149 that made the match score 12-6.

The Bald Eagles wouldn’t get any closer as redshirt senior Sal Mastriani, competing in his first dual since Nov. 20 at No. 5 Missouri, returned with a convincing 18-6 major decision at 157 pounds. Five-straight wins wrapped up an impressive victory for the Hokies.

Tomorrow’s duals will again be exclusively streamed on TrackWrestling.com with a subscription.

LEXINGTON, Va. – Hitting the road for the first time of the new calendar year, the VMI wrestling team heads to the Pitt Duals to take on Bloomsburg, Brown and Edinboro Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Keydets (0-6, 0-3) grapple with Bloomsburg at 10:30 a.m. before facing Brown at noon. The third and final dual of the day will be against No. 23 Edinboro at 1:30 p.m.

Going 2-0 last weekend at home, sophomore 157-pounder Neal Richards owns the best mark on the team with a 16-2 overall record and has won nine consecutive bouts dating back to Nov. 20. Freshman 184-pounder Chris Beck also went 2-0 in the tri-dual and looks to continue his momentum this weekend.

Senior 125-pounder Dalton Henderson was forced to forfeit his two matches last weekend due to injury but looks to resume action in Pittsburgh. Freshman Cade Kiely (165) earned his first career dual win against George Mason last weekend and also looks for continued success on Saturday.

PITTSBURGH, PAJ.R. Wert (Christianburg, VA/Christianburg), Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional [South Dakota State]), Evan Fidelibus (Easton, PA/Easton Area), B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) and Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) each won all three of their matches as the Rider University wrestling team (6-0, 2-0 EWL) went 3-0 at the University of Pittsburgh Duals on Saturday. The Broncs began the day with a 39-4 win over Columbia, before defeating West Virginia, 28-6. Rider wrapped up the three-match sweep with a 32-9 win over Brown.

“We wrestled with energy and very aggressive today” said Rider Head Coach Gary Taylor while talking about the day full of dual meets.

The Broncs kicked the day off with a very strong start, winning the first nine matches they wrestled against Columbia wrestlers to open up a 39-0 lead. An early win by Wert at 125 kicked the Rider wrestlers off in the right direction. “Wert wrestled well having just come off knee surgery” said Taylor.

The Broncs would continue on with the wind at their back, taking the first eight matches of their second dual meet against West Virginia University. The Broncs would have the dual completely locked up by 197 pounds, leading 28-0.

The final dual meet of the day would see more success for Rider, kicking off the match against Brown on yet another run, this time winning the first three matches to take a 15-0 lead. They would never look back, going on to take the dual 32-9.

“Cefolo and Walsh beat two top notch kids from WVU,” said Taylor. B.J. responded extremely well from the Midlands tournament and returned to his old form. Fidelibus continues to improve as a true freshman. Ryan Wolfe also wrestled well, with his only loss coming to the #6 ranked kid in the country 5-4.”

The Broncs next action will be on Friday, January 20th when they Broncs play host to the EWL rival Edinboro Scots in Alumni Gymnasium.

Post-Dual Quotes: OSU vs. Iowa

Iowa Press Conference Video:

OSU Press Conference Video:

Head Coach John Smith

On the Iowa rivalry:

"It was nice to get one in the win column for us. The last three years we've been beaten by them and rivalries don't exist if you don't win both ways so we turned it into a little bit more of a rivalry today."

On how he feels about his team:

"I think that we found out a lot about our team today as far as where we need to go. It was a match that exposed us. As far as riding on top, we didn't want to do anything. Guys didn't want to put any effort into grinding guys out while on top and normally things don't work out the way that you want in big dual meets when you don't have that effort on top. In the end it definitely showed me an area where we can get better in. Overall though it goes back to what I've said all week in that you've got to win tough matches. Some matches might be 12 minutes like Anthony Collica's or like Kaid Brock's where the momentum gets flipped around. You've still got to find a way to win. Austin Schafer got hit with some stall calls. It was a 275-pound guy against a 228-pound guy. There's a difference there and you're not going to be able to push him around. Schafer got horsed around a bit, but kept his head and got the only two offensive takedowns to win it. That sort of gutsy win is the way to win it and I liked seeing that match end in that way."

On Chandler Rogers' pin:

"What I liked seeing more was his two takedowns. He stayed low, grinded out two takedowns and didn't get caught up in everything. In these dual meets I think you can get caught up in wrestling to the level of your opponent. Now, of course, today our opponents were tough. We're not going to go out in some of those matches and get a major decision, but we were going to have to wrestle our tails off to win by one or a takedown. I just liked that he was wrestling to separate himself from who he was competing with. It was one of those matches that we looked and were hoping there was an opportunity to get some bonus points and he went out and got them."

On Kaid Brock beating No. 1:

"If you dissect his match, it's a good win. It was a little bit ugly in the way he finished it up. He's wrestling a guy who is a multiple-time national finalist and someone that isn't going to drop his head when he gets down and not be there at the end. Kaid just has to recognize that there are some things that we've seen as coaches in his past that he just needs to grow through to get to another place. It was a great win though. Being up 5-0 and then being forced to get an escape to win at the end is just one of those things that you have to work with those guys on and get them to recognize that if you're not stretching out scores, it's usually going the other way."

On the atmosphere inside Gallagher-Iba Arena:

"I was excited about the number of people that were here. It was a tough weekend. When looking at the weather on Friday it looked like it was going to be a tough, tough weekend to fill this place up and I just really appreciate these people showing me some tough. These Oklahoma folks, a bunch of Cowboys, they showed some toughness by coming out, even in the rain. That was important and I really appreciate it. There were a lot of fears about how the roads were going to be and I just appreciate all of them getting out here and walking through the rain to come to the match. It resembles our team."

On Dean Heil's matchup:

"Both Dean and Kaid gave up takedowns at the end of their matches. They were wrestling great matches and you can't give up a takedown at the end. I don't care if you've got a comfortable lead and can't get beat and can afford to give one up. Just don't give up those points in that situation. I think he was disgusted when he walked off as well that he gave that up. His teammates don't want to see that. They don't want to see our national champion just give up a takedown because he can afford to. Just don't be that guy, and he's not that guy. That's what I told him. I told him that he's not that guy and that he needed to go get another takedown."

Anthony Collica – Sr., 149 pounds

On his long match:

"I mean I've had a couple of those but not many obviously go that long. I've had them a few times but it's always a little crazy when it goes that long. You know that guy is getting tired and you're pretty tired."

On if the crowd helped pump him up at all:

"I mean yeah, you hear them, but you have to focus on your match and just keep moving forward. You try staying on your toes a little bit and stay solid."

On what it was like to see Kaid with the upset:

"Yeah it was sweet. That guy doesn't lose much. Obviously Kaid is really good. It was real cool to see, especially as a freshman taking out an Iowa senior."

On if he felt like he closed the gap coming into the match:

"I mean I've worked hard all offseason. I changed my style a little bit, but it was just to get better and stronger in those positions. I definitely got stronger in my positions that I wasn't in last year, and I felt a lot better against him honestly."

On beating Iowa:

"I think we can wrestle better but we did well, and as a senior to finally get a win over Iowa is pretty cool. We're only getting better from here."

Chandler Rogers – RFr., 165 pounds

On if a fall was the only thing that was on his mind:

"Going for the pin has always been my go to. Growing up, we've always learned how to pin and gone to pinning camps, where we learned multiple pin combinations. When I say we, I mean Jordan (Rogers) and I. That's what has always made us pretty hard to scout because we can really pin someone from just about any position. In that match, (volunteer assistant coach Chris) Perry said I just have to keep working on this guy and the opportunity might present itself. I don't try to rush my pins because if I rush it then I'll end up getting pinned, and I don't want that to happen. I definitely paced myself and went with the intention of taking the guy down and scoring as many points as I can, and when the opportunity presented itself I took it."

On if he has been working on take downs:

"I'm trying to work on breaking guys and really like being able to withstand a long match, so having those points in the beginning, I don't know how much time was left on the clock when I pinned him, but let's say he got off his back. My arms were toast from holding him that long, and now I have to go out and score more points, so having those two takedowns was a good buffer and a good protection from if he were to come out. Getting pin downs has always been different with my style compared to Oklahoma State's style. Oklahoma State would focus on scoring points. I never really saw a lot of guys pin until Jordan Oliver. He pinned a lot of guys too. Scoring points has definitely been something different I've had to learn and do that more often."

On the grind of the next two months and not taking off as much time:

"Yeah I really like the schedule we have coming up. I feel like when you get out of that competitive atmosphere for that long you can kind of get nervous getting back into it, so I think that having matches over and over again is going to keep us competitive and focused on what we're doing."

Badgers drop tight 18-15 Border Battle to Minnesota
T.J. Ruschell upsets No. 9 Jake Short at 157 pounds

MINNEAPOLIS – It all came down to the final bout for the No. 17 Wisconsin wrestling team against No. 14 Minnesota with the dual tied up at 15-15. But it was the Golden Gophers who came out top with a deciding victory at 174 pounds and clinched the 18-15 victory.

The Badgers battled back tough in the lower half of the weight classes, grabbing four decisions at 157 pounds, 165 pounds, 184 pounds and heavyweight plus one major decision at 149 pounds.

“We wrestled a lot better than we did at Nebraska,” head coach Barry Davis said. “Our guys came out with way more fire in our bellies but we still missed some opportunities to score. Overall, it was a better performance and had some really good things like T.J. Ruschell’s win.

“We have a little bit of a break and we will do some individual work to get ready for Penn State.”

The two most exciting bouts of the dual came back-to-back at 149 pounds and 157 pounds.

Andrew Crone did it again, making another one of his famous comebacks. He rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the third period, tying the match up at 3-3 with a late takedown. And then the ball just kept rolling as Crone kept control and knocked down Minnesota’s Carson Brolsma for four nearfall points, giving him the 7-3 advantage. He wasn’t done yet, exploding in the final minute and grabbing another four nearfall points to give him the final 13-3 major decision with the riding time point. Crone tallied 10 points in the final period to clinch the Badgers’ only bonus-point win of the day.

It’s hard to follow a match like that, but the 157-pound bout did not disappoint.

Senior T.J. Ruschell had a tough test in UM’s No. 9 Jake Short, who was upset by Crone last season at 149 pounds.

Short struck quickly in the first period, taking down Ruschell for a 2-0 lead. Ruschell started on bottom in the second period but used a powerful reversal in to tie it up. Short took Ruschell down again in the third but he immediately escaped. With the riding time in Ruschell’s advantage, it came down to the crucial last seconds with Ruschell down 4-3.

In a turn of events, Ruschell was awarded with a penalty point due to Short’s stalling and upset Short 5-3.

Wisconsin was deducted a team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct on the bench during the 157-pound match.

Senior Isaac Jordan followed suit to the previous two wins, defeating No. 14 Nicholas Wanzek at 165 pounds. The third-ranked Badger started strong with a 4-2 lead after the first period. Wanzek escaped early in the second period but Jordan quickly took the Gopher down again. Jordan started on bottom in the third and slipped out of Wanzek’s grasp to grab the final point of the match and eventually win, 7-4.

Jordan’s win tied the dual up at 15-15 ahead of the 174-pound matchup. Ryan Christensen hit a big takedown just seconds into the match and continued to show control early on with some big returns over Chris Pfarr. However, Pfarr bounced back with a takedown of his own late in the second period, tying it up 3-3. Pfarr tacked on another takedown early in the third but Christensen escaped with 30 seconds remaining to come within one point, but Christensen fell 5-4 in the final match of the Border Battle.

Wisconsin started the dual with a big win from freshman Hunter Ritter. In his first dual back since picking up some injuries at Midlands, the 184-pounder pulled the 7-2 decision over Jordan Rothers.

Heavyweight and second-ranked Connor Medbery met up with conference foe No. 8 Michael Kroells for the third time this season and came away with a close 3-2 decision, marking his fifth win over a ranked opponent this campaign.

No. 13 Ricky Robertson dropped an 11-5 decision to No. 2 Brett Pfarr at 197 pounds. No. 20 Johnny Jimenez also lost a tough 2-0 decision to No. 6 Ethan Lizak, while Cole Martin suffered an 8-3 loss to No. 13 Tommy Thorn. Eli Stickley was pinned by No. 16 Mitch McKee in 1:21. All of Wisconsin’s losses were to ranked wrestlers.

Both teams grabbed four decisions and had one bonus-point win apiece. Wisconsin was the only team to notch nearfall points in the dual.

The Badgers will enjoy a nice break before returning to action against Penn State at home on Jan. 27 at the UW Field House.

Kasper Garners 20th Win; Duke Falls to No. 22 App State

January 17, 2017

DURHAM, N.C.—Duke redshirt junior Jacob Kasper earned his 20th win of the season, but three straight victories by visiting Appalachian State to finish the night proved to be the difference as the Blue Devils fell to the No. 22 Mountaineers 25-11 in non-conference wrestling action tonight.

Duke drops to 2-4 overall on the year with all four losses coming against top 25 foes. Appalachian State moves to 10-2 overall on the year. Zach Finesilver and Jake Faust also picked up wins for the Blue Devils in the setback.

The dual certainly did not lack excitement with Kasper leading the charge on the fireworks. With the Blue Devils trailing 3-0 after a loss at 197 pounds, Duke’s heavyweight got the capacity crowd on its feet with a thrilling final second victory over no. 12 Denzel Dejournette.

Dejournette, doing well to defend against a Kasper shot, scored a takedown late in the first period for the 2-0 lead. Kasper was able to get a takedown of his own in the second period, but couldn’t cut into the lead any more as he headed into the third period trailing 4-2.

Starting in the down position for the final two minutes, Kasper got to his feet and escaped to make it 4-3. With both wrestlers exhausted, the bout appropriately came down to the final seconds as the Ohio native capitalized on one final shot for the 5-4 decision as time expired. The win was Kasper’s fifth over a top 20 foe this season and pushed him to 20-1 on the year.

The Mountaineers responded with consecutive wins at 125 and 133, including getting bonus points at 125, for a 10-3 lead through four bouts.

Looking to rebound after a tough match at NC State last week, Finesilver wasted no time in getting to his offense. The 141-pounder jumped all over Appalachian State’s Irvin Enriquez, taking an 8-2 lead after three minutes. Finesilver continued to add to his advantage in the second and third periods, en route to the 19-3 technical fall in the third period to bring Duke within two, 10-8, in the team scoring.

Another major decision at 149 stretched the Mountaineers lead back to six points with four matches left. Faust took care of business for Duke at 157 pounds with a hard-fought 4-2 decision over Gavin Londoff. He led 1-0 after the first period and added two nearfall points and an escape in the third to pull Duke back within three, 14-11.

With Duke within striking distance of winning the match, the Mountaineers finished with fury as they notched a major decision and overtime decision in the final two matches for the 14-point victory.

Duke returns to action Sunday, Jan. 22 at Navy. The match is schedule to begin at 2 p.m.

BLACKSBURG - The fifth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team returns to Cassell Coliseum for the first time in over two months this weekend where the Hokies (11-1, 1-0 ACC) will face No. 23 Pitt on Friday at 7 p.m. and Virginia on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Both matches will be streamed live on the WatchESPN platform. Friday's dual will be Corp of Cadets and Military Appreciation Night at Cassell while Sunday features a "takedown" foam finger givewaway as part of Student Hokie Club Day.

The Hokies are coming off a 4-0 weekend where they took home the Virginia Duals championship, their third time winning the Duals in the last four years. After getting by a tough North Dakota State squad in semifinals, Tech topped No. 15 Oklahoma, 24-10, in the finals.

The Hokies were anchored by seniors Joey Dance at 125 pounds and Ty Walz at 285 pounds all weekend as the duo combined to register six bonus point victories. The weekend also saw Dance win his 100th career match and head coach Kevin Dresser win his 150th career dual as head coach of the Hokies.

Scouting The Field
• Pitt enters the weekend with a 7-2 overall record.
• The Panthers won their host-tournament, the Pitt Duals, last weekend and lost only two bouts in three matches against Frankling & Marshall, Davidson and Bloomsburg.
• Their only two losses of the season have come against No. 1 Oklahoma State in Stillwater (39-0) and No. 11 Lehigh (28-8) at home.
• The bout at heavyweight pits the third-ranked Walz against No. 16 Ryan Solomon, who enter the weekend with a 5-1 record this season.
• The 133-pound bout features No. 8 Dom Forys against redshirt junior Dennis Gustafson, who comes off a 3-1 weekend wrestling at 133 for the first time since his freshman year at the Virginia Duals.
• UVA, who’s receiving votes in this week’s NWCA coaches poll, will enter Cassell with a 3-1 overall record.
• The ‘Hoos went 3-1 at the Virginia Duals last weekend that included a loss to Tech’s semifinals opponent in North Dakota State.
• The Bison upset the No. 24 Cavaliers 27-13.
• No. 7 Jack Mueller serves as a formidable opponent for Dance, who will face a fellow top 10 wrestler for the second-straight weekend.
• The Hokies and ‘Hoos have faced off 76 times in a series that dates back to 1922.
• Tech has an edge in the all-time series, 43-32-1.

Hokies Take Virginia Duals
• After falling in the finals in last year’s Viriginia Duals, the Hokies knocked off Kent State, Lock Haven, North Dakota State and Oklahoma in the 37th installment to take home the title.
• Tech bulldozed through Kent State and Lock Haven in the first and second rounds though the Lock Haven dual saw redshirt junior Kevin Norstrem suffer an injury at 141 that kept him out the rest of the tournament.
• With redshirt sophomore Solomon Chishko suffering from a stomach illness, the Hokies looked vulnerable. But the upperweights were flawless, going a perfect 16-0 and picking up bonus points in six of those bouts.

Joey Dance - ACC Wrestler of the Week
• Joey Dance was named ACC Wrestler of the Week after his stellar weekend at the Virginia Duals.
• Dance, ranked second nationally at 125 pounds, began the Duals with technical falls over Cory Simpson of Kent State (22-7) and Jake Field of Lock Haven (20-4).
• He then defeated Josh Rodriguez of North Dakota State, the nation’s fourth-ranked wrestler, 5-3 to start a 22-15 Tech win over the Bison.
• The win over Rodriguez made him only the 10th wrestler in program history to eclipse 100 career victories.

Hoosiers Host Grapple With The Gophers

Story Link | Weekend Notes (PDF) | Watch Live on BTN2Go.com | TrackWrestling

January 21, 2016

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers will host their first home dual meet in over a month, and their second home Big Ten dual of the season, when Indiana and #11 Minnesota take the mat at University Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon, January 22 at 2:00 p.m. ET.

The Gophers and Hoosiers fondly remember last year's proceedings in Minneapolis, where Indiana secured their first dual win over Minnesota since 1968 in a 19-18 tiebreaker victory. This year, teams will recognize familiar faces on both benches, but the probable bout card produces first-time matchups at nine weights. Senior Nate Jackson (184) leads the Hoosiers with a No. 7 ranking and a 21-2 record. On the Gophers' sideline, fans will no doubt recognize No. 2 Brett Pfarr (197), who brings a 19-1 record into Bloomington.

The dual could feature as many as 10 ranked wrestlers between the two teams. Catch the action live via BTN Plus on BTN2Go.com, or follow the meet on TrackWrestling.

Hoosier Notes:

Last Time Out: Mackey Mayhem
The Hoosiers took the mat at the unique setting of Mackey Arena last weekend in their dual at Purdue. Indiana won three consecutive bouts at a crucial juncture to tie the meet, but the Boilermakers closed with a major decision and a sudden victory win to take a 19-12 win.

Jake Danishek (157) stood out for the Hoosiers with his 9-3 upset decision over #12 Alex Griffin. Other successes included decision victories by Chris Perez (149), Bryce Martin (165), and Nate Jackson (184).

Five in First Coaches Poll
With the unveiling of the first ranking period by the NWCA, it was announced that five Hoosiers currently sit in the top 33 of their respective weight classes. Elijah Oliver (#30 at 125) and Nate Jackson (#7 at 184) are back in the rankings after qualifying for last year's NCAA Championships; Devin Skatzka (#17 at 174), after his fifth-place finish at Midlands, received his first spot in the ranking period.

Two other sophomore standouts made the cut at their weights. Jake Danishek (#27 at 157) entered the rankings after his first career ranked win last weekend, and Bryce Martin (#30 at 165) earned a spot after his 12-3 start to the year.

Turning Back the Clock
The last meeting between these two teams was an historic one for Indiana, who snapped a 47-year losing streak against the Gophers with a 19-18 tiebreaker win. Indiana dropped the first bout, but they responded with wins from Nate Jackson (174) and Matt Irick (184) to cut Minnesota's lead to 12-6 at the midpoint.

The Hoosiers stormed back in the second half. Elijah Oliver (125) secured a decision win after the break, followed by Alonzo Shepherd's (133) stunning second period pin over Sam Brancale. Luke Blanton (149) stamped the victory in the ninth bout, scoring a 17-10 upset over #10 Jake Short.

Back to the Grind
The dual with Minnesota is the final weekend of the regular season where Indiana wrestles just one dual meet in a weekend. The season continues next weekend with a dual at Northwestern and a home dual with #7 Nebraska. On the final weekend, the Hoosiers host #3 Iowa on Senior Night before traveling to #14 Illinois that Sunday.

At the conclusion of the dual season, Hoosier fans will be able to take advantage of short travel to the Big Ten Championships, hosted at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on March 4 and 5.

Up Next: at Northwestern
Indiana hits the road again next Friday for their first dual at Northwestern since the 2013-14 season. The Hoosiers aim to snap a 5-meet losing streak to the Wildcats, with their last win coming in 2010 at Northwestern.

Fans are immediately drawn to the potential rematch at 184 lbs. between #7 Nate Jackson and Mitch Sliga. Jackson and Sliga met this season at the 2016 Midlands Championshps, where Jackson won a 14-3 major decision.

Keep it Locked on #IUWR
Fans can follow the happenings of Indiana Wrestling this season on Twitter and Facebook at the handle @IUWrestling, along with the hashtag #IUWR.

Fans can gain first access to probable starters, weekly award announcements, and more on social media and at IUHoosiers.com.

Back Points…
• As a team, the Hoosiers have an 142-91 (.609) record this season with 28 major decisions, 10 tech falls, and 36 wins by fall. They've only conceded 5 pins.
Nate Jackson picked up his 93rd career win over Purdue's Tanner Lynde, climbing closer to the milestone 100-win mark.
• Jackson leads the Hoosiers in total takedowns (98), riding time points awarded (9), and bonus point wins (15).
Elijah Oliver (125), Jake Danishek (157), Norman Conley (197) and Chris Perez (149) haven't conceded back points to their opponents this season.
• This dual marks the 53rd meeting between Indiana and Minnesota. The Gophers lead the series, 46-5-1.
• The Indiana wrestlers will host a free middle school clinic prior to the dual meet with Minnesota. The clinic will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by free pizza and an autograph session with the Hoosiers.

Panthers Outlast Keydets, 37-6

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 23rd-ranked Pitt wrestling team improved to 8-3 on the season after taking nine of 10 bouts from VMI Saturday afternoon in Cormack Hall.

“It was great to see our guys respond after a loss with solid performances today,” said acting co-head coach Drew Headlee. “We pressed the offense the entire dual and were able to put up a large number of points on the board.”

Of the nine victories, four Panthers were able to earn wins with bonus points including two pins and two technical falls.

Sophomore LJ Bentley got things going at 125 pounds, using a first period takedown to hold off VMI senior Dalton Henderson, 2-1, who entered the dual 17-7 overall. Starting on bottom entering the second frame, Dalton escaped, but neither wrestler would be able to score again.

Sophomore Robert Lee used Bentley’s momentum at 141 pounds to earn his seventh pin of the season in 1:07. Lee took down John Reed just a few seconds into the bout and never looked back, boosting the Panthers to a 9-6 lead.

At 149 pounds, redshirt freshman Alex Murray outlasted Stevan Smith, 11-4, after jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first period. Murray added on two more points in the second after taking down Smith early on and would ride him out for the remainder of the period. With the bout in his favor, 6-1, Murray started the third on bottom and quickly escaped. Murray would escape and take down Smith once more to secure the win with riding time.

Redshirt freshman Taleb Rahmani extended Pitt’s lead to 17-6 after picking up a 19-1 technical fall in 4:39 over Dolan Walsh. Rahmani racked up 12 points in the first period and a takedown and four point nearfall would lock up his 15th win of the season.

Ranked 12th in the country by InterMat this week at 165 pounds, sophomore TeShan Campbell recorded his eighth technical fall of the season and has won his past five matches by technical fall. Campbell dominated Cade Kiely, 21-6, which included seven takedowns and extended Pitt’s lead to 22-6.

At 174 pounds, freshman Christian Dietrich held off Shabaka Johns, 7-3. Dietrich struck first in the opening frame jumping to an early 2-0 lead. The two started in neutral to open the second and Dietrich took Johns down again. Dietrich tacked on three more points in the third by way of escape and riding time to secure the win.

Feeding off of the Panthers’ momentum, sophomore Donovan McAfee turned in a 3-2 decision over Chris Beck, extending Pitt’s lead to 28-6. After a scoreless first period, McAfee escaped to start the second and took down Beck in the third for the win.

Senior John Rizzo also picked up a win by decision as he defeated Taylor Thomas, 7-4. Rizzo scored the first takedown in the opening frame and escaped and scored a takedown in the second giving him a 5-0 lead entering the final period. Thomas was ready for Rizzo in the third as he took him down twice, but Rizzo would escape each time to lock up the win.

In the final bout of the day, redshirt junior Ryan Solomon jumped to an early 8-0 lead in the first thanks to a takedown and recording six nearfall points. Soon after, Solomon pinned Thomas Shea-Roop in 1:17 giving the Panthers a 37-6 victory.

Pitt resumes action Saturday, Jan. 28 as it hosts ACC foe North Carolina. The conference match-up is set to get underway at 7 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Field House.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Travis Vasquez posted his second pin of the season at 149 lbs., but Brown University wrestling fell to Bucknell University, 25-15, at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Sunday afternoon in an EIWA dual meet.

Closing their home-opening weekend, the Bears (3-3, 1-1 EIWA) pulled within 16-12 and 19-15 of the Bison (5-4, 3-1 EIWA) after wins at 165 and 184 lbs., but the visitors captured the last two bouts of the match to secure the team win.

Vasquez (Fair Lawn, N.J.) paced the Bears with a pin in 2:11 at 149 lbs. while sophomore CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) won 4-3 at 184 lbs., and sophomore Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) earned a victory via injury default at 165 lbs.

Jacks battle, but fall to top-ranked Cowboys
1/22/2017 | Wrestling
STILLWATER, Okla. - South Dakota State won some key battles, but the top-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team proved to be too much in a 31-9 dual victory Sunday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

The 19th-ranked Jackrabbits, who had their seven-match winning streak snapped, dropped to 8-3 overall and 4-1 against Big 12 Conference opponents. Oklahoma State, whose entire 10-man lineup in Sunday's dual featured a ranked wrestler, stayed unbeaten in duals at 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big 12.

"It was good to win the three matches we did, but we still lost the dual and it was a Big 12 dual," SDSU head coach Chris Bono. "We've got to get home and get better."

All three of SDSU's wins came against a Cowboy wrestler in the top five of their respective weight classes in the most recent Intermat rankings. Seventh-ranked Seth Gross recorded only one takedown in his match against second-ranked Kaid Brock, but came away with a 6-4 decision. Gross led 3-2 after the first period and rode out the entire second period before scoring on a pair of escapes and a riding-time advantage. With the win, Gross improved to 19-1 overall and 9-0 in duals.

David Kocer, the 20th ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, pulled off the biggest upset of the day with a 7-2 decision over fifth-ranked Kyle Crutchmer. Kocer recorded an early takedown and four-point near-fall to build a 6-0 lead in the first period and never allowed Crutchmer to mount any sort of offensive attack. A returning NCAA qualifier, Kocer improved to 14-5 overall and 9-2 in duals this season.

Also victorious in a matchup between highly ranked wrestlers was Jackrabbit 197-pounder Nate Rotert, who notched a 3-1, sudden-victory decision over fourth-ranked Preston Weigel. Rotert, ranked eighth, was awarded a point for stalling near the end of the second period and gave up an escape to open the third period. With time winding down in the overtime period, Rotert recorded a takedown to up his season mark to 13-3 and 7-2 in dual action.

The only matchup between ranked wrestlers that Oklahoma State won was at 149 pounds, where second-ranked Anthony Collica posted a 23-8 technical fall win over No. 20 Alex Kocer.

The Cowboys received two other wins by technical fall - from 11th-ranked Nick Piccininni at 125 pounds and sixth-ranked Nolan Boyd in the 184-pound weight class. Seventh-ranked heavyweight Austin Schafer ended the dual with a first-period pin of Alex Macki.

Top-ranked 141-pounder Dean Heil won by major decision for Oklahoma State over Isaac Andrade, with 157-pounder Joe Smith and 165-pounder Chandler Rogers, both ranked sixth, turning in wins by decision.

SDSU returns to action Saturday with a pair of duals in Edwardsville, Illinois. The Jackrabbits will take on host SIUE at 2:30 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. dual against Gardner-Webb.

He followed that up with a 15-7 major decision over Virginia Tech’s Ty Walz, who was ranked third nationally by InterMat, in the Blue Devils’ loss to the Hokies on Sunday. The loss by Walz was only his third in 19 bouts and his first to someone other than Wisconsin’s Connor Medberry, the nation’s second-ranked heavyweight.

About the Blue Devils

·Duke heads to Gardner-Webb in search of its fourth win of the season. The Blue Devils are 3-6 overall following a hard-fought setback to fifth-ranked Virginia Tech. Four of Duke’s six losses came against ranked opponents, while the wins are against Hofstra, Old Dominion and LIU Post.

·Kasper leads the Duke contingent with a 23-1 overall record and is riding a 17-match win streak dating back to Nov. 18. He is 5-0 against top 20 opponents and has his sights set on joining the 30-win club.

·Zach Finesilver (141), Thayer Atkins (125) and Bass (174) all are in the double digit wins column with 13-8, 17-7 and 15-8 records, respectively. Finesilver has scored bonus points for the Blue Devils in four of his six dual wins this season, while Bass looks to even his dual record Wednesday. ·Garrett Neff, with more experience under his belt, will try to avenge a loss to Marinelli at the Wolfpack Open in November. Alec Schenk will look to do that same and garner quality RPI points against Gamble, who defeated Schenk 3-0 in the Wolfpack Open.

·Finesilver aims to match his performance from last season when he pinned Ryan Hull in the second period.

Cal Poly to Host Northern Colorado for Final Home Dual Meet of 2016-17 Season Sunday
— Cal Poly Wrestling —

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly’s final home dual meet of the 2016-17 wrestling season will be held on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Mustangs will host Northern Colorado, with the first bout slated to begin at noon.

Cal Poly split a pair of dual meets last Saturday at Righetti High School. After falling to No. 24 North Dakota State 30-6, the Mustangs edged Central California rival CSU Bakersfield 21-18.

Senior Colt Shorts snapped an 18-18 deadlock with a 6-0 decision in the final bout to put Cal Poly over the top, raising the Mustangs’ record to 5-8 for the season and 1-2 in Pac-12 duals.

Northern Colorado enters Sunday’s dual with a 1-6 mark, falling 35-6 to No. 14 Oklahoma last Sunday in Greeley, Colo. Only winners for the Bears were 125-pounder Trey Andrews and 165-pounder Keilan Torres, both by decision.

Andrews and Torres are two of four nationally ranked wrestlers on the Northern Colorado roster. Andrews, ranked No. 28, is now 20-12 after his win last week while Torres, ranked No. 25, improved to 20-10.

Other nationally ranked Bears are 141-pounder Timmy Box (21-8), ranked No. 24, and Dylan Gabel (18-7), ranked No. 20 at 184 pounds.

Northern Colorado’s lone dual meet win this season was a 29-12 nod over Boise State. In addition to Oklahoma, the Bears have lost to North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Oregon State, Iowa State and Arizona State.

Northern Colorado, which wrestles at CSU Bakersfield on Friday, is coached by Troy Nickerson. In his third season with the Bears, Nickerson was an assistant coach at Iowa State for two seasons and also served as co-head coach of the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club from 2011-2012 in Ithaca, N.Y. He wrestled at Cornell from 2006-10, earning All-American honors all four seasons, including a national championship at 125 pounds in 2009 and a pair of runner-up finishes.

A year ago in Greeley, Colo., Northern Colorado edged the Mustangs 22-19, improving its advantage in the series to 3-1. Cal Poly’s lone win over the Bears was a 22-16 decision in 2007 at the Mott Athletics Center.

Shorts is ranked anywhere from No. 18 to No. 20 in the major national wrestling polls, sporting an 18-11 record with four falls.

Other Mustangs scheduled to compete Sunday with winning or .500 marks include Colton Schilling (1208) at 141 pounds, 174-pounder Travis Berridge (11-6), 184-pounders Mitch Woods (11-5) and Sohrab Movahedi (12-5), 197-pounder Thomas Lane (11-11) and 285-pounder Spencer Empey (14-13).

In addition to CSU Bakersfield, Cal Poly has beaten San Francisco State, Indiana, Cal Baptist and West Virginia. The Mustangs’ five dual meet wins this season are the most since the 2011-12 squad posted a 6-7 mark.

Next week, Cal Poly will wrap up the dual meet portion of its schedule with Pac-12 matches at Oregon State on Friday, Feb. 10, and at Boise State on Sunday, Feb. 12.

Stanford will host the Pac-12 Conference Championship on Sunday, Feb. 26, with the NCAA Division I National Championship slated for March 16-18 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

Cowboys Wrap Road Trip with Dominant Win at Kent State

KENT, Ohio – The top-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team wrapped up its whirlwind road trip with a dominant, 36-6 victory over Kent State on Saturday afternoon. The win moved the Cowboys to 12-0, and came less than 24 hours after the team dropped No. 24 Edinboro on Friday night in Edinboro, Pa.

Despite being down three starters for the second dual this weekend, the Cowboys tallied six bonus-point victories, along with six points from a forfeit at 133 pounds. OSU turned in four major decisions on the day to go along with a pin from Anthony Collica at 149 pounds and a technical fall from Nick Piccininni at 125.

“Bonus points early on gets your team rolling,” Head coach John Smith said. Sometimes, when you’re wrestling teams that are a little bit undermanned you can take advantage of that, so it was good to see us do that.”

Piccininni got back on track with a 20-5 technical fall on Saturday after a tough loss to ninth-ranked Sean Russell of Edinboro Friday night. Leading, 9-1, over Kent State’s Cory Simpson after two periods, the Cowboy redshirt freshman scored five takedowns in the third on the way to an 11-point period to finish off the tech in 6:25, his sixth of the season.

After redshirt freshman Kaid Brock was awarded the win by forfeit at 133 pounds, Ohio natives Dean Heil and Anthony Collica piled on to boost OSU’s lead to 21-0.

Heil used three takedowns in the third to finish off a 16-5 major decision over Chance Driscoll at 141 pounds. The win served as the 2016 NCAA Champion’s 20th-straight win and boosted his undefeated record on the season to 21-0. Fresh off his 100th career win Friday night, Collica would put the exclamation mark on a hot start for the Cowboys with his second pin of the season, decking Kent State’s Tim Rooney in 4:52 to move to 15-1 for his senior campaign.

Davey Dolan turned in the first of two losses for the Cowboys Saturday, as he came up short, 11-5, to No. 30 Casey Sparkman at 157 pounds. Derek White would also drop his match to Stephen Suglio at 197 pounds.

“Our two losses at 157 and 197 just weren’t enough,” Smith said. “We need to stay in a little better position, and we need to score defensively. We just didn’t get it done.”

Redshirt sophomore Chandler Rogers had no trouble putting points on the board at 165 pounds, scoring seven takedowns and a nearfall for the 20-7 major decision over Jared Walker. The win was a nice rebound from Friday night against Edinboro, which saw the Stillwater native suffer a fall at the hands of No. 17 Austin Matthews.

Senior Kyle Crutchmer got in on the bonus-point action at 174 pounds, as he handled Kent State’s Isaac Bast, 19-6, for his third major of the season. Crutchmer led, 6-2, heading into the third, but opened up the match late with five takedowns in the final frame that would lock up the major decision and his 13th win of the season.

“The coaches have really been stressing putting up points and getting takedowns,” Crutchmer said. “Anytime you’re on a road trip, it can be a little harder. (Bast) came out firing at the beginning, but you just move forward and push the pace. I ended up scoring a couple of takedowns, which is really good for me at this point in the season.”

After gutting out a 10-8 win over Edinboro’s Dakota Greer on Friday night, senior Nolan Boyd registered a 7-0 decision over Shane Mast at 184 pounds to improve to 16-3 for the year. Despite only getting the decision, Boyd was in control throughout, as he racked up over six minutes of riding time in the win.

Redshirt sophomore Tanner Allen had an impressive day at heavyweight for the Pokes, as he posted a 10-2 major decision over Devin Nye for the first dual win of his career. Allen jumped up early with a pair of takedowns in the opening period and never looked back, adding a couple more scores in the final frame to finish off the victory.

“That was nice to see,” Smith said. “Those guys look forward to opportunities, and I thought he had a good outing against one of the top 10 heavyweights at Edinboro, and I thought he followed it up today with a good outing. You don’t often see a heavyweight score four takedowns in a match, so it was good to see and it was a good win for him.”

The Cowboys now look ahead to their final weekend of the regular season that will bring Big 12 foes Wyoming and Oklahoma into Gallagher-Iba Arena next weekend. OSU will face Wyoming Friday night at 7:30 p.m., before returning to host the 15th-ranked Sooners on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Bastian upsets No. 15 Kocer in 29-10 setback to No. 19 SDSU

Feb. 4, 2017

Final Results

BROOKINGS, S.D. –Utah Valley University redshirt freshmanKimball Bastianled the way for the Wolverine wrestling team on Saturday evening by earning a 3-1 upset victory over No. 15 David Kocer. Despite Bastian's big victory, UVU couldn't pull out its second straight win over a ranked Big 12 Conference opponent in as many nights as it fell to No. 19 South Dakota State, 29-10, at Frost Arena in Brookings. The Wolverines drop to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in Big 12 action with the setback, while the top-20 Jackrabbits improve to 12-3 on the season and remain in second place in the Big 12 standings with a 6-1 league record."We had some great efforts in a few of the matches tonight. Kimball's was an especially big win, beating a highly ranked opponent," head coachGreg Williamssaid. "There were a few weights where we didn't wrestle with intensity through the whole match and that hurt us. Our team has been doing some really positive things this year. We need to keep building on that."With the 31st-ranked Bastian and 15th-ranked and 2016 NCAA qualifier Kocer all tied up at 1-1 with an escape apiece at the end of regulation, the Wolverine 174-pounder was the aggressor in the opening sudden victory period as he got deep in on a single-leg attack just a few seconds into the opening overtime round. Bastian then managed to convert the single-leg shot into a takedown to defeat the higher ranked foe by a score of 3-1. The victory marked Bastian's fifth consecutive win and his 19th of the season (19-9).In all the Wolverines won a total of three of the 10 matches on the night, as 141-pound seniorTrevor Willsonand junior heavyweightDustin Dennisonalso won their respective bouts. Willson led the duo by winning his second match of the road trip by major decision by defeating SDSU's Isaac Andrade by a score of 14-5, while Dennison won his ninth straight match and 20th of the season (20-6) with a tightly contested 6-5 decision over Alex Macki. With the dual meet beginning at 165 pounds, SDSU's 17th-ranked Luke Zilverberg got the Jacks off to a strong start with a 12-4 major decision over UVU freshmanKoy Wilkinsonto give SDSU a 4-0 lead. That's when Bastian countered back with his big upset win over No. 15 Kocer to cut the deficit to just a point at 4-3. South Dakota State then answered back with a decision win from Martin Mueller (184 pounds) and a first-period fall from two-time NCAA qualifier and seventh-ranked Nate Rotert (197) to extend its lead to 13-3.UVU heavyweight Dennison then managed to score four of the last five points of his match to record his 6-5 win to trim the team score to 13-6 before SDSU's Ben Gillette (125) answered with a 7-6 decision of his own over UVU 125-pounderMitch Brownand the 2016 NCAA qualifier and second-ranked Seth Gross (133) followed with the Jacks' second fall of the night to extend their lead to 22-6. That's when senior 141-pounder Willson answered for Utah Valley with his 14-5 major decision over SDSU's Andrade to cut the score to 22-10. That's as close as the Wolverines would get the rest of the way, however, as South Dakota State went on to win the final two bouts with victories from No. 19 Alex Kocer (149) and Logan Peterson (157) to take the conference dual by a score of 29-10.Despite dropping the meet, UVU still holds an 8-4 all-time series advantage over the Jackrabbits. The Wolverines also finish the road trip with a 1-1 weekend split after pulling out a 22-16 upset over No. 23 North Dakota State on Friday evening in Fargo.UVU will now return home to close its regular season against No. 22 Stanford and Big 12 Conference foe Northern Colorado next week. The Wolverines and the Pac-12 Cardinal will first do battle on Friday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. at Utah Valley's newly named Lockhart Arena before UVU welcomes the UNC Bears to town on Saturday, Feb. 11 for a 3 p.m. contest.No. 19 South Dakota State 29, Utah Valley 10165: #17 Luke Zilverberg (SDSU) MDKoy Wilkinson(UVU), 12-4174: #31Kimball Bastian(UVU) Dec. #15 David Kocer (SDSU), 3-1 (SV-1)184: Martin Mueller (SDSU) Dec.Will Sumner(UVU), 7-4197: #7 Nate Rotert (SDSU) Fall #24Tanner Orndorff(UVU), 2:38285:Dustin Dennison(UVU) Dec. The Jackrabbits gained control of the dual with wins by Martin Mueller at 184 pounds and Rotert in the 197-pound division. Mueller turned in a 7-4 decision over Will Sumner, while the seventh-ranked Rotert posted three first-period takedowns before pinning Tanner Orndorff in 2 minutes and 38 seconds.

UVU and SDSU split a pair of one-point decisions as the dual moved from the upper weights to the lower weights. The Wolverines' Dustin Dennison earned a 6-5 decision over Alex Macki at heavyweight, while SDSU's Ben Gillette recorded a takedown with five seconds remaining to pull out a 7-6 decision against Mitchell Brown in the 125-pound match.

Gross, ranked second at 133 pounds, led Jarod Maynes 14-1 through one period before racking up the pin in 4:28. Gross upped his season mark to 23-1 and remained unbeaten in duals at 13-0 with his 10th pin of the season.

After Trevor Willson notched a 14-5 major decision for Utah Valley over the Jackrabbits' Isaac Andrade, SDSU closed out the dual with two more victories. Alex Kocer and Grant LaMont battled through two scoreless periods in their 149-pound match before the 19th-ranked Kocer countered from the bottom with a reversal early in the third period and added six back points en route to a 9-2 decision.

At 157 pounds, SDSU's Logan Peterson avenged a loss to Raider Lofthouse of Utah Valley earlier this season at the Cyclone Open with a convincing 12-4 major decision. Peterson did not allow a takedown by his opponent in the match.

SDSU will be on the road for a pair of duals next week, wrestling Thursday (Feb. 9) at West Virginia and Feb. 12 at nationally ranked Virginia Tech.

Justin Portillo was scheduled to square off against his twin brother, Josh, in the 125-pound championship match, but Josh Portillo withdrew from the match due to injury, resulting in a medical forfeit. Sun, February 05, 2017
BOONE, N.C. — With first place on the line, the day wouldn’t get any less dramatic over the course of 10 weight classes as Appalachian State University wrestling went to the tie-breaking rules to defeat Chattanooga, 17-16 (55-54), on Sunday afternoon in Varsity Gym.

The 16th-ranked Mountaineers (12-2, 6-0 Southern Conference) were tied with the Mocs (5-9, 3-2 SoCon) at the end of the match, 16-all. The first tiebreaker is the total amount of weight classes won, but even then, the two teams were tied at five apiece. The tie-breaking rules then dictated that the winner is whoever has the most match points when all individual weight classes are added up.

Appalachian finished with 55. Chattanooga finished with 54.

The Sunday matinée action began at the heavyweight class as two nationally ranked wrestlers squared off. Senior Denzel Dejournette ranked No. 9 in TrackWrestling’s polls, while UTC’s Jared Johnson ranked No. 9 in InterMat. Both wrestlers battled hard, but Dejournette would bring the attack early on, taking a lead and never giving it up to outlast Johnson, 10-4.

At the 125-pound weight class, No. 22 senior Vito Pasone took on Alonzo Allen and got the lone bonus point match for the Mountaineers on the day. Pasone downed Allen 15-4 in a major decision to put App State up 7-0.

Chattanooga fought back hard though at the 133- and 141-pound matches, crawling within one point, 7-6, by winning them back-to-back. Chris Debien downed No. 21 freshman Colby Smith in a barn-burner, 2-1 decision, while Chase Zemenak defeated sophomore Irvin Enriquez in another close 8-5 decision.

The Mountaineers, however, would answer strong back, rattling off three-straight weight class victories beginning at 149 pounds. No. 15 sophomore Matt Zovistoski took down Roman Boylen in a 7-3 decision before freshman Gavin Londoff won out a tight contest at 157 over Dylanger Potter, 3-1. No. 28 junior Forrest Przybysz also had to edge out the victory, but did so without allowing a point himself, winning 2-0.

The Mocs, however, would come back to tie the match by winning the final three weight classes of the day. Sean Mappes downed No. 17 junior Nick Kee in UTC’s lone major decision of the day, 17-7. No. 19 Bryce Carr took down No. 30 junior David Peters-Logue in a close 9-4 decision. And sophomore Randall Diabe was unable to defeat Clay Dent, 5-1, as Chattanooga tied the match up 16-16 and forced the tie-breaking scenario.

The Mountaineers will go on to wrestle in their last SoCon match at VMI on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. Looking to remain perfect through league play for the first time since 2011-12 and win the conference regular season championship outright, a win on Wednesday will allow Appalachian State to host the 2017 NWCA Division I Dual Championship Series presented by The United States Marine Corps and Theraworx.

That match would be held on Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. against a to-be-determined Big Ten Conference team. For updates, keep it here.

Duke Falls to No. 24 Virginia, 23-14

February 5, 2017

DURHAM, N.C.—Duke captured four victories, including two my major decision, but came up short against No. 24 Virginia in ACC wrestling action this afternoon at Card Gymnasium. Jacob Kasper extended his win streak to 19 matches with his major decision at heavyweight.

Duke falls to 4-7 overall and 0-3 against ACC foes with the setback, while Virginia improves to 10-5 and 2-2 in conference action. The Cavaliers were ranked 24th in the InterMat Dual rankings. Duke honored its nine seniors – Joey Abbate, Connor Bass, Cole Baumgartner, Alex Belaia-Martiniouk, Jake Faust, Spencer Neff, Tyler Patrick, Xaviel Ramos and Michael Wright – prior to the match.

Also picking up victories for the Blue Devils on Senior Day were Bass (174), Faust (157) and Alec Schenk (184). Duke led 10-9 at intermission, but four straight victories from the Cavaliers after the break sealed the match with a 23-10 lead.

Virginia got off to a strong start at 165 pounds with Ray Bethea capitalizing late in the third period to get the fall and 6-0 lead on the scoreboard.

Bass, looking to rebound from a tough loss Wednesday, turned in a gutsy performance at 174 to capture the narrow 4-3 decision over Garrett Peppelman. The Cavalier redshirt sophomore scored first and led 3-1 heading into the third period. Bass, in the down position, escaped to make it 3-2 and tacked on a takedown for the 4-3 lead with 60 seconds left. Bass was excellent in the final minute, riding out the match to earn the three points for Duke.

Trailing 6-3 in the team score, Schenk came on the mat at 184 and controlled the action from the opening whistle to earn the 7-1 decision. The junior scored early and cruised to his eighth victory of the year and first ACC triumph.

After Virginia answered with a decision at 197 to regain the 9-6 lead, Kasper followed with his typical dominance at heavyweight. Cal Poly Rallies For 21-18 Dual Meet Victory Over Northern Colorado
— Cal Poly Wrestling —

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sohrab Movahedi’s takedown with seven seconds remaining sparked the Cal Poly wrestling team to a come-from-behind 21-18 victory over Northern Colorado in a non-conference dual meet Sunday afternoon in Mott Athletics Center.

Trailing 3-2, Movahedi scored the go-ahead points for a 4-3 decision over No. 20-ranked Dylan Gabel at 184 pounds as Coach Jon Sioredas’ Mustangs overcame 14-0 and 18-6 deficits for their sixth dual meet victory of the season.

For Movahedi, it was his sixth consecutive win as the junior improved his season record to 13-5.

Cal Poly won six of the 10 bouts and four of the six victories were by one or two points.

After Northern Colorado won the first three bouts by a fall and two major decisions for a 14-0 advantage, Mustang 149-pounder Joshy Cortez began the comeback with a 6-5 decision over Ben Polkowske.

Cortez jumped to a 4-1 lead in the first period with a pair of takedowns and added escapes in each of the final two periods for his 12th win of the season.

At 157, No. 18-ranked Colt Shorts and Northern Colorado’s Jimmy Fate were locked in a scoreless duel for two periods. Fate nearly rode out the third period for what appeared to be a 1-0 victory on riding time but locked his hands with four seconds to go, giving Shorts a penalty point and a 1-1 tie.

Shorts scored the only takedown of the bout 27 seconds into the overtime period for the 3-1 decision.

Northern Colorado 165-pounder Keilan Torres recorded his team’s third major decision of the dual meet for an 18-6 Bears lead with four bouts to go.

All four were won by the Mustangs.

Xavier Johnson overcame a 3-2 deficit with a second-period reversal and added an escape, takedown and riding time in the final period for an 8-3 decision over Tanner Davis at 174.

Movahedi’s 4-3 upset of Gabel at 184 closed the gap to 18-12.

At 197, Mustang redshirt freshman Thomas Lane (12-11) sprinted to a 12-0 lead in the first period with a takedown, a pair of four-point near falls and two penalty points before Jamarcus Grant was warned for stalling a fourth time and disqualified with 12 seconds to go in the opening period.

The disqualification gave Cal Poly six team points and knotted the team score at 18-18 heading into the final bout.

And for the second consecutive dual meet, the Mustangs prevailed by the same score. Cal Poly edged CSU Bakersfield 21-18 last week at Righetti High School as Shorts scored a 6-0 decision in the final bout.

This time, it was Spencer Empey clinching the dual for the Mustangs with a 2-0 decision over Jack Kuck at 285.

After a scoreless first period, Empey tallied an escape in the second period and was awarded a point in the third period as Kuck was penalized for stalling, resulting in the victory and lifting Empey’s mark for the season to 15-13.

Cal Poly, which closed out the home portion of its dual meet schedule with Sunday’s win and snapped a three-match losing streak to the Bears — Northern Colorado still leads the series 3-2 — visits Oregon State on Friday and Boise State on Sunday for Pac-12 duals.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

Illini Grapplers Stop Boilermakers In Their Tracks

Illinois defeats Purdue 30-6

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois wrestling won seven straight matches, highlighted by a pin from Kyle Langenderfer, as the Orange and Blue defeated the Purdue Boilermakers, 30-6, on Sunday afternoon at Huff Hall. After winning three of the first four matches to start the dual, Kyle Langenderfer, Isaiah Martinez and Zac Brunson scored a combined 15 points to clinch the victory. Illinois improves to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the Big Ten.

"I think our guys are doing some better things, getting better in certain spots," said Head Coach Jim Heffernan after the match. "We still got some things we need to iron out, but we still go a month until the Big Ten Tournament."

After Purdue's 125-pounder Ben Thornton gave the Boilers an early 3-0 lead, the Fighting Illini strung together seven straight victories and 27 team points.

No. 6 Zane Richards got the scoring started with an 8-2 decision over Nate Limmex at 133 pounds. The Illini senior used three takedowns and riding time to pick up his 101st career victory, tying him with current Illini volunteer assistant coach Jesse Delgado for 22nd place on the all-time list.

With the dual tied, 3-3, the Illini picked up hard-fought decisions from Mousa Jodeh (11-13) and No. 20 Eric Barone (8-5) to take the momentum of the match. Following a scoreless first period, Jodeh received a penalty point after Kyle Ayersman was twice called for stalling, and then earned an escape to win the match, 2-1. Barone added three more points to Illinois' score with a 4-1 decision against Nate Limmex. The two 149-pounders traded escapes, but Barone's 1:20 ride to start the third period, coupled with a late takedown, gave the Illini a 9-3 lead over Purdue.

Illinois' strength at the middleweights showed again on Sunday, as No. 12 Kyle Langenderfer, No. 1 Isaiah Martinez, No. 12 Zac Brunson and No. 12 Emery Parker tallied 18 points, stretching the team lead to 27-3.

Langenderfer (20-4) notched his fifth fall of the season in the first period against Purdue's Mario Leveille, pinning the Boilermaker in one minute, 50 seconds. With his eighth straight victory, Langenderfer becomes the fourth Illini to reach the 20-win plateau this season, joining Martinez, Brunson and Parker.

"I thought my approach was pretty good, I was kind of slow early," explained Langenderfer. "I knew Purdue likes to slow you down, hold on to you, and make sure there's no space, and I fell into that early in the match. I got that takedown, which is something I've been working on with the coaches, lifting, and ended up getting the fall there."

After the six points from Langenderfer, Martinez (21-0) continued the onslaught with 12 takedowns, including five in the first period, to dispatch of Dylan Lydy by technical fall, 25-10. The 12 takedowns are the most by an Illini in a dual meet this season, while the technical fall is Martinez's ninth of the season.

Brunson (24-5) used a dominant first period to earn a major decision against Jacob Morrissey at 174-pounds, extending the Illini lead to 24-3. After scoring 12 back points on Friday at Northwestern, Brunson added eight more on Sunday to pick up the 13-1 victory. The win is the 99th of Brunson's Illini career, taking sole possession of 24th place in program history.

Finishing off the 27-0 Illini run was Emery Parker, winning 8-4 against Tanner Lynde. After Lynde took a 2-0 lead into the second period, Parker fought back with an escape and two takedowns in the to take the lead. After an escape by Lynde to start the final period closed the gap to 5-4, Parker issued a third takedown along with riding time to finish off Lynde.

After Purdue's Christian Brunner gave the Boilers their final victory of the day with a 2-0 decision at 197 pounds, Brooks Black (10-4) closed out the match with an escape in period two and a riding time point, shutting out Tyler Kral 2-0.

Up next, the Fighting Illini will carry their six-match winning streak into University Park, Pennsylvania for a dual against No. 2 Penn State at 6 p.m. central time on Friday, February 10.

Illini Notes:

  • Illinois improves to 54-27-2 all-time against the Boilermakers, including 34-12-1 in Champaign.
  • The Illini have won six consecutive matches dating back to their 34-6 victory against No. 13 Michigan on January 20. The Illini are 8-2 in duals this season, 5-2 in the Big Ten.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana's wrestling team competed in their final home dual meet of the 2016-17 season against No. 3 Iowa on Friday evening at University Gymnasium. Two Hoosiers secured impactful match wins, but the Hawkeyes (11-2, 7-1) captured a 32-7 team victory. Indiana slips to 9-8, 2-6 in the Big Ten, with one dual remaining in the season.

The meet was not without its unforgettable moments for Hoosier fans. Foremost of those was watching IU senior Nate Jackson (184) wrestle at the U-Gym for the final time. Jackson's major decision win over Iowa's Mitch Bowman, 23-9, capped a 21-2 career record inside the Hoosiers' home gymnasium.

"It was more of an emotional experience than I thought it was going to be," Jackson said. "I'm going to miss the U-Gym and all the things it has done for my life. I'm happy that we had a great crowd out today and a lot of support; this was a memorable experience."

Jackson (27-2, 17-0) won his eighth Big Ten dual meet and ninth match by major decision against Bowman tonight. He opened with a 6-1 scoring run in the first period, adding two back points before Bowman slipped a late reversal into his tally. Following another two takedowns in the second period, Jackson opened up with a ferocious run of five takedowns and two back points to close the match.

The victory is Jackson's 99th of his collegiate career, which sets up a compelling encounter with Illinois' #12 Emery Parker on Sunday afternoon. A win would not only put Jackson at the century mark; he would become the first Hoosier with an unbeaten dual meet record since All-American Matt Powless (2011-12).

"We always say, 'One match at a time.' And I guess that last dual match is up," Jackson said on the upcoming meet in his home state. "I'm hoping the crowd will have a warm welcome for me, that a lot of my family members come out. I'm looking forward to building on this match and use it as a stepping stone to be better at Illinois in a couple of days."

On the other end of the spectrum, one Hoosier saw the beginning of great things to come. Sophomore Fletcher Miller (285) ended the dual meet in dramatic fashion on his way to a 3-1 decision over Iowa's Steven Holloway. The victory is his first career Big Ten duals win; his first Division-I decision in Bloomington.

"It was good to finally get a Big Ten win at home," Miller said. "Last weekend I had close matches that I lost off of my mistakes, but I should've won. It was great to come through today and get that win."

Miller has been in this situation before. After a scoreless first period, Holloway broke the tie with an escape point in the second. Miller broke free in the third to tie the bout.

With the clock winding down in the third, it started to look like Miller was headed for his fifth sudden victory match of the season; that is, until an opportunity presented itself. Miller and Holloway entered a short time scramble at the mat's edge. With seconds left on the clock, Miller swung around for the match-winning takedown.

"It's a good win to get right at the end of the season knowing that I can beat some of these guys that I've had close matches with this year," Miller continued. "Hopefully I'll be able to knock off a couple of those guys at the Big Ten Tournament.

The night was full of moments that had the home crowd at full throat. Bryce Martin's (165) match with #16 Joey Gunther was the bout of the night, entering rare territory with a double overtime decision.

Martin and Gunther prepared for theatrics after a 1-1 draw in regulation. The first sudden victory period went scoreless, and both grapplers picked up escape points in the first overtime. Another sudden victory period passed without incident, and both wrestlers surprisingly held their opponent to the mat for zero escape points. Gunther ultimately won the decision on 10 seconds of riding time.

Up Next: Indiana (9-8, 2-6) at #10 Illinois (8-3, 5-3)

The Hoosiers will bring their regular season to a conclusion on Sunday afternoon with their second leg of the year's toughest weekend, at 10th-ranked Illinois. Indiana's wrestlers are set to take on a lineup with seven ranked wrestlers, led by #1 Isaiah Martinez (165).

For the first time this season, the Hoosiers' dual will broadcast to a global audience on the Big Ten Network. The meet is set for a 4:00 p.m. ET start.

BLACKSBURG – Less than 16 hours after winning the ACC’s dual meet championship with a victory over NC State, the Virginia Tech wrestl! ing team took to the mat again and showed no sign of a letdown, as the No. 5 Hokies rolled to a 29-15 win over No. 16 South Dakota State at Virginia Tech Carilion Court on Sunday.

Getting wins from three of the five seniors who were recognized on Senior Day – Ty Walz, Joey Dance and Sal Mastriani – the Hokies pulled away to move to 17-1 overall on the season and 7-1 against ranked opponents. South Dakota State fell to 13-4.

“I intentionally put a back-to-back [matches] together where we got done late and had to get up and make weight again just because I wanted to simulate the NCAA tournament a little bit,” Tech coach Kevin Dresser said. “That was my thought process. When I set it up, I didn’t realize South Dakota State would be as good as they are. I knew NC State would be formidable, and there would be a lot of pressure on us, so I wanted to have a pressure situation and I wanted to have a back-to-back situation.

“They [South Dakota State] were fresh, and we weren’t. We didn’t wrestle great in situations, but we grinded. That’s what we’ll have to do in St. Louis [site of the NCAA Championships], and we haven’t been great on a lot of Friday mornings [the second day] in St. Louis. So we needed to do this.”

For the second straight match, the Hokies fell behind, as Tech’s David Bergida lost 9-4 at 165 pounds. But the Hokies quickly recovered when Zach Epperly downed South Dakota State’s David Kocer 3-1 at 174 pounds with a takedown in sudden victory. Epperly, ranked No. 5 at 174, moved to 17-1 on the season.

Tech’s Zack Zavatsky then rebounded from his loss Saturday night with an 8-3 win over Martin Mueller at 184 pounds. Zavatsky, who is ranked fourth in his weight class, registered two of his three takedowns in the third period and received a point for riding time to get the victory.

Tech pushed its lead to 12-3 when Jared Haught won by forfeit at 197 pounds. Then Walz and Dance sealed this one with technical falls in the next two matches.

Walz, who is ranked fifth nationally at heavyweight, jumped on Alex Macki right from the start, scoring twice on takedowns and adding four points on a near fall in the first period. He finished the match with seven takedowns and won 20-5 (5:49), moving to 19-2 on the season.

Then Dance, ranked third at 125, easily handled the Jackrabbits’ Ben Gillette. He, too, started fast, taking down Gillette three times in the first period. He finished with six takedowns and two near falls to record a 19-4 (6:07) win and move to 22-1 on the season.

“We still need to improve at some weights, but those are some guys who can get on the podium,” Dance said. “We’ve got to get that right in the [wrestling] room. We’ll go back and fix that, and they’ll be ready. We’ll all be ready for ACCs coming up and National Duals next weekend.”

Dance’s victory pushed the Hokies’ lead to 22-3. The Jackrabbits recorded pins at 133 and 141 pounds to cut the lead to 22-15, but the Hokies’ Solomon Chishko survived a tough match at 149 pounds to end things. Chishko, who is ranked sixth in this weight class, led 6-2 in the third period and wound up needing a takedown in sudden victory to get an 8-6 win.

Mastriani closed things with an impressive 14-4 major decision victory over Logan Peterson at 157 pounds. Like classmates Walz and Dance, the No. 15 wrestler at 157 got out quickly, leading 6-2 after the first period thanks to three takedowns. A takedown and an escape in the second period pushed his lead to 9-2, and he moved to 15-4 on the season.

“Sal’s on an upswing,” Dresser said. “He’s really wrestling well right now. I think he’s healthy, and he’s paid his dues. He’s doing the right things right now.”

The Hokies now gear up for the National Duals, which will take place next weekend. Tech will face a Big Ten opponent to be determined next Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Virginia Tech Carilion Court. The matchups will be announced Monday.
