Jackrabbits come up short at No. 5 Virginia Tech
2/12/2017 | Wrestling
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Fifth-ranked Virginia Tech controlled the first half of the dual and went on to defeat No. 16 South Dakota State, 29-15, Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.

With the win, the Atlantic Coast Conference champion Hokies improved to 17-1 overall. SDSU dropped to 13-4 in duals this season, with all four losses coming against teams currently ranked in the top 12 of the latest Division I USA Today/National Wrestling Coaches Association poll.

The Jackrabbits grabbed an early 3-0 lead on the strength of a 9-4 decision by Luke Zilverberg over David Bergida in the 165-pound weight class. Zilverberg's victory was his 20th of the season against six losses.

Virginia Tech rattled off victories in the next five weight classes - all by ranked wrestlers - to take a commanding 22-3 lead. The Hokies' streak started in the 174-pound bout as fifth-ranked Zach Epperly recorded a 3-1 overtime decision over 16th-ranked David Kocer.

At 184 pounds, fourth-ranked Zack Zavatsky fended off a challenge from SDSU's Martin Mueller for an 8-3 decision that put the Hokies ahead 6-3.

After the Jackrabbits forfeited to third-ranked Jared Haught in the 197-pound matchup, the Hokies' fifth-ranked heavyweight Ty Walz scored a 20-5 technical fall over Alex Macki.

Third-ranked Joey Dance turned in the third bonus-point victory in a row for Virginia Tech with a 21-4 technical-fall victory over Ben Gillette as the dual moved to the lower weights at 125 pounds.

SDSU's Seth Gross ended the Hokies' string of victories with a third-period pin over Dennis Gustafson. The win was Gross's team-leading 25th of the season - against only one loss - and marked the 11th pin of the season for the second-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds.

Henry Pohlmeyer made it back-to-back pins for the Jackrabbits as he put Brendan Ryan's shoulders to the mat in the 141-pound bout in 1 minute and 14 seconds. Pohlmeyer's fifth pin of the season pulled SDSU to within 22-15 with two matches to go.

Virginia Tech, however, ended hopes of a Jackrabbit comeback with its second overtime decision of the day in a match between two ranked wrestlers. SDSU's Alex Kocer, ranked 16th, trailed sixth-ranked Solomon Chishko, 6-3, heading into the third period, but picked up two stalling points and a point for the riding-time advantage to force overtime. Midway through the overtime period, Chishko recorded a takedown for the 8-6 victory.

In the final match of the dual, 15th-ranked 157-pounder Sal Mastriani of Virginia Tech notched a 14-4 major decision over Logan Peterson.

SDSU is in line to compete in next week's NWCA National Duals Championship Series. An announcement on pairings and host sites is planned for late Sunday evening.

Badgers drop Spartans to cap Big Ten dual season

Wisconsin defeats Michigan State, 26-12, behind eight wins

Feb. 17, 2017

On the Web: http://go.wisc.edu/rho30x

MADISON, Wis. - It was an exciting night at the UW Field House, as the No. 18 Wisconsin wrestling team put on a show marking a 26-12 victory over Michigan State on Friday night to put a cap on its Big Ten dual season.

Wisconsin (6-5 overall, 4-5 Big Ten) suffered an early setback as Michigan State’s Drew Barnes pinned Santonio Cathery (157), which gave MSU a 6-0 lead. However, the Badgers immediately turned the tides, winning the next five bouts.

Connor Medbery (HWT) had a standout performance for the Badgers, adding five points to the board with a 15-0 tech fall. The victory was Wisconsin’s lone bonus-point win of the night.

In the second match, Hunter Ritter got the Badgers back on track. He came out strong with two takedowns in the first period and kept control throughout to finish the 5-4 decision.

Ricky Robertson (197) continued the Badgers successful rhythm starting with his first takedown in the first period. He attacked late in the second to take a 4-0 lead into the second period. He was taken down early in the third after escaping, but retaliated with a reversal at the last second to close the 7-2 decision.

The Badgers’ winning ways continued through Medbery’s win to defining decisions at 125 and 133 by Johnny Jimenez and Eli Stickley, respectively.

Andrew Crone ditched his “Comeback Crone” persona and attacked first for a 2-1 edge after the first period at 149. He slipped out of Trimble’s grasp more than halfway through the second and then tacked another takedown. Trimble hit Crone with a reversal late in the third, but the Badger escaped and held off to clinch the 6-3 decision.

Seniors TJ Ruschell and Isaac Jordan both came away with victories at 157 and 165, respectively, -and secured the 26-12 Wisconsin victory. Ruschell defeated Austin Thompson, 8-4, and Jordan dropped Drew Hughes with a tight 3-2 decision.

The Wisconsin wrestling team returns to the UW Field House on Sunday to host Central Michigan. The dual is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. (CT). UW's esteemed senior class will be honored in a ceremony before the start of the dual.

MATCH POINTS

-UW won eight out of 10 matches on the night, marking the fourth time Wisconsin has won five-or-more matches in a dual and also marking the most bouts won in a dual this season.

-The Badgers recorded their third-straight win headed into the final dual of the season.

-For the second-straight year, UW ended Big Ten dual season with a win. The Badgers trumped Northwestern last season, 38-3.

-Wisconsin improved to 27-17-2 in the all-time series with Michigan State and 14-8-1 in duals in Madison.

-Hunter Ritter claimed his third-straight victory over a Big Ten opponent with his 5-4 decision.

-Isaac Jordan eclipsed the 20-win mark with his 3-2 decision.

-Connor Medbery matched his career high for Big Ten wins in a season with nine.

-Sunday’s dual will serve as senior day honoring one of the most decorated groups of seniors the Badgers have ever had. Santonio Cathery, Jarod Donar, Isaac Jordan, Rylan Lubeck, Connor Medbery, TJ Ruschell and Ryan Taylor will be honored at the match.

MAT TALK

“Overall, I’d say we did pretty good. We won eight out of 10 matches, so that’s always good. We’re always looking to go 10-for-10, so we're not quite where we want to be at, but it’s something to improve on and we’re looking forward to Sunday. Hopefully we can capitalize on the matches that we didn’t win today and get big wins against a good team in Central Michigan.” - Junior Ricky Robertson

“I told my coach before the match that I’m going to make sure I don’t give up the first takedown. It’s kind of been a little bit of a problem, starting kind of slow, and I can always put some pace up at the end because I’m in pretty good shape. It was definitely good to get out to a good start this match and not really have to come back for a third.” -Andrew Crone

“We beat a Big Ten team. We won eight out of 10 weight classes. I felt like we saw a lot of the things we’ve been working on in practice and there’s things that are recurrent issues that stopped us from maybe building on our leads or finishing matches the right way, things we’ve been talking about for a month now. It’s time to straighten those out. We’re going to talk about it tonight, talk about it tomorrow and come out ready Sunday against Central Michigan.” -Associate head coach Trevor Brandvold

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - “This is a very special day. This is a special team. And it’s all the teams leading up to here that built the history and the quality of this program,” said Rider Head Coach Gary Taylor talking about the Rider wrestling team’s come-from-behind victory over the Maryland Terrapins. The Broncs won 23-20 on the strength of two pins in the middleweights.

The Broncs received wins from J.R. Wert (Christianburg, VA/Christianburg), B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), Dean Sherry (Brick, NJ/Brick Township), and Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, DE/Caravel Academy), along with a pair of pins from Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), and Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional).

The match began at 125 with an early 6-1 victory by Wert over Michael Beck to give the Broncs a 3-0 lead.

They would then fall behind quickly, with Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional [South Dakota St.]) losing a tight 5-3 sudden-victory match, and Evan Fidelibus (Easton, PA/Easton Area) and Gino Fluri (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) getting pinned to give Maryland a 15-3 lead through four matches.

The Broncs would get back on the winning track, starting with Clagon defeating Justin Alexander, 3-0, to push the score to 15-6 for a brief moment. The Broncs would be penalized one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct after the end of the match.

Walsh would then strike out of nowhere in what seemed like a fairly slow match, scoring the fall in 6:06 over Patrick Gerish. At 174, Sherry would fight hard on the way to a 7-3 decision over Josh Ugalde of Maryland. The match would end up tied at 14 when Maryland was penalized a team point of their own at the end of the 174 pound match.

Stinson would then strike in the heroic moment of the match, wrestling up a weight class at 184 and getting the fall in 1:46 to give the Broncs their first lead since 125 pounds, 20-14.

“I might as well go for it,” said Stinson about the big move. “I put him right on his back, and I knew I had to get the pin because it was huge for the team.”

In an end fitting only for the script of a Hollywood movie, Wolfe would come out to wrestle at 197 knowing that a victory would secure Coach Taylor’s 442nd and final dual victory. He did so in workmanlike fashion, defeating David-Brian Whisler, 8-3, to clinch the match, 23-14.

“I was happy to be put in that position, knowing that I could win for Coach Taylor, myself and the team,” said Wolfe about being put in position to clinch the match.

The Broncs would forfeit at 285 pounds and take home the 23-20 victory.

“EWLs are what we’ve got next, and we’ll be going into training for that. We’ve hit this thing pretty well over many years, and coming out of EWLs are the NCAA Championships. This is an incredible team, and I’ve been amazed by them,” said Coach Taylor in regards to the next step for the season.

The Broncs will next compete at the Nelson Fieldhouse on the campus of Bloomsburg University in the EWL Championships, looking to add conference titles and national qualifiers to the history of Rider Wrestling.

SoCon Wrestling Championship set for Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Southern Conference Wrestling Championship will take place Saturday at The Citadel’s McAlister Field House in Charleston, South Carolina, with the SoCon title and 18 NCAA allocations on the line. Two-time defending regular-season champion Appalachian State will try to defend its 2016 tournament title.

Six of last year’s SoCon individual champions will be back in the field this year, though two of them are in different weight classes. The SoCon was allocated 18 spots for the NCAA Championships, with three each at 125 pounds, 184 and heavyweight, two each at 149 and 157 and one each at the eight other weights.

Two-time SoCon Wrestler of the Year and top seed Denzel Dejournette of Appalachian State will try for his third straight heavyweight title, but he’ll have stiff competition in one of the league’s deepest weight classes. Five SoCon wrestlers appear in either the NCAA coaches’ panel rankings or RPI, with Dejournette and Chattanooga’s Jared Johnson, the league’s No. 3 seed, appearing in the top 10 nationally in both. No. 2 seed Jere Heino of Campbell, No. 4 Jake McKiernan of SIUE and No. 5 Boyce Cornwell of Gardner-Webb are also in either the coaches’ panel rankings or RPI.

Three other wrestlers will look to defend their 2016 titles. At 125 pounds, SIUE’s Freddie Rodriguez will try to claim his second title, but No. 1 seed Vito Pasone of Appalachian State and No. 2 seed Alonzo Allen of Chattanooga are seeded ahead of him. Also standing in the way of a Rodriguez repeat is Campbell’s Nathan Kraisser, the 2016 champion at 133 pounds, who is the No. 4 seed at 125 this year.

SIUE’s John Fahy will try to make it two in a row at 149 pounds, but he’s seeded third behind Appalachian State’s Matt Zovistoski and The Citadel’s Ty Buckiso, respectively.

At 184, defending champion Ville Heino of Campbell is the No. 1 seed. Chattanooga’s Bryce Carr and Gardner-Webb’s Hunter Gamble are seeded second and third, respectively, in another deep weight class.

Like Campbell’s Kraisser, Gardner-Webb’s Austin Trott has changed weight classes and won’t get a chance to defend his title. Last year’s champion at 165 has moved up to 174 and is the second seed behind SIUE’s Jake Residori.

The Citadel’s Aaron Walker, who recently became just the third wrestler to be named all-conference four times in his career since the coaches began voting on the award in 1993, will be vying for his third career title at 157 pounds. Walker, the top seed this season, won in 2014 and 2015 but has SoCon Freshman of the Year Austin Kraisser of Campbell lurking as the No. 2 seed at the weight class.

At 197, Citadel sophomore Sawyer Root is the top seed, but 2015 champion Jake Tindle of SIUE is the second seed.

First-time champions will be crowned at 133, 141 and 165. Chattanooga’s Chris Debien is the top seed at 133, while Campbell’s Josh Heil, the lone freshman on the All-SoCon team, is the top seed at 141. Chattanooga’s Justin Lampe is the No. 1 seed at 165.

Last season’s wrestling championship came down to the wire, as Appalachian State’s Dejournette downed Chattanooga’s Johnson in the heavyweight final to clinch the Mountaineers’ first title since 2003. Dejournette’s win pushed App State’s team score to 83.5 points, just half a point ahead of runner-up Chattanooga.

Tickets for Saturday’s action, which begins at 10 a.m., will be single-session. Doors open at 9 a.m.

Prices are $15 for adults, $10 for youth (6-12) and $8 each for groups of 10 or more. Students from Southern Conference schools, including wrestling associate member schools, can pick up a ticket free of charge simply by showing their school IDs.

As part of its partnership with Headlock on Hunger, the SoCon will offer $3 off the ticket price with the donation of a food item at the door.

Danishek, Skatzka Join Hoosiers Headed to NCAA Champs

Goldman continues qualifier streak

Story Link | Final Brackets | Tournament Central

March 5, 2017

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – What a weekend it was.

Indiana's wrestling team hosted for the 2017 Big Ten Wrestling Championships in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, which saw its first mat action since the 2006 championships. The tournament featured the best of the best, including seven title pairings of top-10 wrestlers.

For the Hoosiers, the final day saw a growth in their NCAA travel party. Sophomore Jake Danishek (157) and freshman Devin Skatzka (174) achieved qualifying finishes in the third session.

Danishek faced a win-or-stay-home situation in a deeply talented bracket. He scored a victory last night over Justin Alexander (Maryland) to enter Sunday's ninth-place match, a battle for the Big Ten's final automatic bid at 157 lbs. Danishek came through in crunch time to earn a vital decision against Ohio State's Jake Ryan.

The win came in sudden victory, for neither Danishek nor Ryan gave up anything in regulation beyond an escape point. Danishek took a shot early in the extra period, drove forward, and persisted for the drop on the edge of the mat.

The Hoosier section erupted. Danishek, in his second varsity season, booked his first trip to the season's final weekend.

"It's a good feeling," Danishek said after his crucial win. "It's a big step to get the spot, and a big encouragement, but at the same time I have a lot of work to do this week."

Skatzka, also in a class with nine automatic bids, sealed his NCAA fate on Saturday night, but had a chance to improve his podium stance in a seventh-place match with Jacob Morrissey (Purdue). The bout had implications beyond order of finish; however, as Skatzka gained an opportunity to return the favor from Morrissey's win at the dual meet with Purdue.

Skatzka triumphed with a 6-3 decision to win seventh-place and notch a podium finish in his first opportunity. He broke a 2-2 tie in the second period with a drop on a neutral start. Morrissey broke free after a long ride and Skatzka added a short time takedown for a 5-3 lead. Skatzka locked the ride point before the third period and resisted Morrissey's scoring attempts for the win.

The addition of Danishek makes Indiana's qualifying group the largest for head coach Duane Goldman since the 2013-14 season. Skatzka and Danishek join Elijah Oliver (125) and Nate Jackson (184), who head to the NCAA Championships together for the second time after both earned sixth-place finishes. Goldman continues a run of putting a Hoosier in the NCAA Championships in every season with IU, extending his streak to 25 years.

Sun, March 05, 2017
Bloomington, Ind. – Senior Tim Lambert finished second at 125 pounds during the final day of the Big Ten Championships at Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon.

As a team, Nebraska finished fourth with 102.5 points. Ohio State captured the team crown with 139.5 points, while Penn State (130) and Iowa (112.5) rounded out the top three. NU's fourth-place finish matches its best team result in the Big Ten Championships since joining the conference in 2011. For the second consecutive year, the Huskers scored more than 100 team points.

Seven Huskers placed in the top five at the conference tournament, led by Lambert’s performance. Top-seeded Thomas Gilman (Iowa) took down Lambert in the first period to lead 2-0. Lambert went on top in both the second and third periods, and allowed Gilman to escape both times en route to a 4-0 loss.

Junior Colton McCrystal (141) took third place in his second Big Ten Championships appearance, winning both of his matches on Sunday. McCrystal took out third-seeded Tommy Thorn (Minnesota), 15-9, and No. 5 seed Luke Pletcher (Ohio State), 6-2.

Sophomore Tyler Berger (157) went 2-0 on the final day in Bloomington en route to a third-place finish. He won a major decision in the consolation bracket before avenging an earlier loss in the tournament to Michigan’s Brian Murphy in the third-place match.

Two-time All-American TJ Dudley placed fourth at 184 pounds after a 1-1 day. Dudley won by medical forfeit over Indiana’s Nathan Jackson, but fell to top-seeded Bo Nickal (Penn State) in the third-place match, 14-9.

Senior Aaron Studebaker took fourth place at 197 pounds, splitting his Sunday matches. Studebaker fell to Penn State’s Matt McCutcheon in tiebreaker-1, 3-2, after defeating Rutgers’ Matt Correnti, 5-1.

For the second consecutive year, senior All-American Eric Montoya finished fifth at 133 pounds. Montoya split his matches on Sunday, falling to Michigan’s Stevan Micic, 8-7, before avenging a loss from earlier in the tournament to Minnesota’s Mitch McKee in the fifth-place bout.

Senior Collin Jensen finished fifth with his pin of Razohnn Gross (Rutgers) at 3:47. Jensen dropped his first match of the day, but responded with bonus points in the fifth-place match to clinch his fourth NCAA berth.

The Huskers return to action at the NCAA Championships, set for March 16-18, in St. Louis, Mo.

Cowboys Shatter Points Record with Eight Big 12 Champions

TULSA, Okla. – With its 51st conference championship locked up on Saturday, eight members of the Oklahoma State wrestling team earned Big 12 titles Sunday afternoon to tie a program record. As a team, the Cowboys accumulated 176.5 points to set a Big 12 record, while the 83-point margin of victory is also a new conference record.

Individual title winners included Nick Piccininni, Dean Heil, Anthony Collica, Joe Smith, Kyle Crutchmer, Nolan Boyd, Preston Weigel and Austin Schafer. Collica became the eight wrestler in school history to win four conference titles, while Heil and Boyd claimed their third and Smith, Crutchmer and Weigel each won their second.

“It’s what you hope for when you come in heavy favorites. Actually doing it is a different story. As a whole, I saw my team wrestle better than they had all year. That was what I was hoping for. I saw a lot of things in the final matches that I didn’t like that were different than what I saw from those guys in the earlier rounds. I can really take those final matches and tell them that these aren’t the kinds of things that will get you on the podium in two weeks. It’s good to have a little bit of that, rather than everything being perfect. When you’re a heavy favorite and you deliver that, you feel good about what you’ve done.”

All 10 OSU starters advanced to Sunday’s final round, setting up a dual-like event where the Cowboys were matched up with many of the Big 12’s best at every weight. If the event had used dual scoring, the Pokes would have come out on top, 30-6.

“We had some closer matches than that this season,” Smith said. “I don’t want to rub that in. We have some great coaches in our league and we have some historically great teams and some teams that I know are going to be coming (in the future), so I’ll just say that when it counted most this weekend we were punching people right in the noise and that’s what you hope for.”

Nick Piccininni opened things up for the Cowboys with a big win over No. 4 Josh Rodriguez of North Dakota State for his first career Big 12 Championship. Tied at four at the end of regulation, Piccininni and Rodriguez battled through a couple of overtime periods before the Cowboy redshirt freshman tallied the decisive takedown in the second sudden victory period.

“It’s an awesome feeling finishing a shot like that in overtime and getting the win,” Piccininni said. “It was a fun one. It was exciting and I was happy with the outcome.”

After a tough loss in a back-and-forth match between Kaid Brock and South Dakota State’s top-seeded Seth Gross that served as the Cowboy redshirt freshman’s second defeat of the season, Dean Heil got the Pokes back on track at 141 pounds in a 10-7 decision over Bryce Meredith of Wyoming for his third conference title. Heil led throughout the match, tallying four takedowns and a reversal to clinch the championship. The win capped off an impressive weekend for Heil, which saw the NCAA Champion rack up his first two pins of the season on the way to the title bout.

“I know Bryce is a tough opponent,” Heil said. “Every time we wrestle, he gives me a go. Coach Smith came up to me before my match and told me to be ready for anything and to come out and continue wrestling. I expected scrambles and they happened. I was ready for them, so they all basically ended in my favor.”

Senior Anthony Collica registered a 7-4 decision over Oklahoma’s Davion Jeffries in Sunday’s 149-pound finals, claiming his fourth Big 12 crown and becoming only the eighth Cowboy to complete such a feat. Collica. With his lead cut to 5-4 with a minute to go in the match, Collica scored a takedown in the final seconds to lock up his win.

“It’s always fun being here,” Collica said. “The finals match didn’t go how I wanted, but I got the win and felt pretty good up until that match but to get out of here with a win feels great.”

Sophomore Joe Smith defended his title at 157 pounds in dominant fashion over second-seeded Clay Ream of North Dakota State. Smith shut out Ream in an 8-0 major decision to finish off a spectacular weekend in which he outscored his opponents, 32-0.

“It was a good tournament overall,” Smith said. “The Big 12 is getting a lot tougher and the teams that came here are tough. There are a lot of guys ranked in the top 20 or top 10 in the nation, and overall I thought it was a good tournament for both myself and the team. I thought I wrestled well. I wrestled a couple of tough kids. I’ve been working on top a lot, so I really felt my top game start to roll on as the tournament went on.”

The Cowboys’ final loss of the day came at 165 pounds, where redshirt sophomore Chandler Rogers came up short against West Virginia’s Dylan Cottrell in a 5-4 match. Tied at three in the third, Cottrell won a scramble for a takedown with just over a minute left. Rogers broke free and after nearly catching Cottrell on his back in the final seconds, was not awarded a takedown after review.

Competing in his hometown, Crutchmer got the BOK Center crowd on its feet after finishing off an 8-4 decision over Oklahoma’s Matt Reed. The senior was in control throughout, building his lead to as large as five in the third period to finish off his second career Big 12 title.

“It’s surreal,” Crutchmer said. “I’m excited and I’ve got a bunch of friends and family here. For me being a senior and getting to wrestle at my last Big 12 Championships here in Tulsa is awesome. I’m glad I came out on top.”

Senior Nolan Boyd claimed his third conference championship at 184 pounds with a 15-4 major decision over Northern Colorado’s Dylan Gable for his third major of the weekend. Boyd had no problem with Gable, racking up six takedowns in the match to get the win.

“That match felt good,” Boyd said. “Some of the other ones, I didn’t felt like I cut loose and had the matches I wanted, but that’s in the past, so we’re going to keep moving. My team wrestled incredibly and that was fun to watch. We’ve got stuff to work on, and it was a fun tournament.”

Preston Weigel picked up his second-straight Big 12 crown at 197, defeating the bracket’s top seed in No. 5 Jacob Smith of West Virginia. Late in the first period, Weigel converted on a takedown and was initially awarded a fall; however, it was ruled that Smith injured himself as he was falling to the mat, and the pin was changed to an injury default.

Senior heavyweight Austin Schafer finished off his first Big 12 Championship run with a 9-0 major decision over Utah Valley’s Dustin Dennison. The win wrapped up an outstanding weekend for the Edmond, Okla., native, as he earned a pin and a pair of majors to earn top honors.

“It was pretty cool environment,” Schafer said. “It felt like a dual. When guys lost, the other guys picked up the pace and kept us all in line and kept the motivation going. We really wrestled for each other out there and that’s what you want to see in the postseason.”

The Cowboys will bring all 10 starters to this month’s NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo., which is set for March 16-18 at the Scottrade Center. OSU will be looking for its 35th national title.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The March magic that Ohio State captured last night carried over into Sunday, as the Buckeyes crowned four champions and won the fourth Big Ten wrestling team title in school history as Indiana’s Assembly Hall.

THE SHORT STORY
The Buckeyes got two dramatic title match victories at 133 and 174 pounds, respectively, and added wins at 197 and 285 pounds by Kollin Moore and Kyle Snyder to distance itself from second-place Penn State. Along the way, Nathan Tomasello became just the third three-time Big Ten champion with his 5-4 decision over Cory Clark and Bo Jordan scored an overtime takedown to defeat Mark Hall of the Nittany Lions.

In the team race, Ohio State finished ahead of top-ranked Penn State by 9.5 points, 139.5-130.0. Iowa was third with 112.5 points.

TOMASELLO MAKES HISTORY
The championship round started with Tomasello scoring a buzzer-beating escape against Cory Clark after Clark tied the match at 4-4 with a takedown on the edge of the mat. A redshirt junior, Tomasello previously two titles at 125 pounds before making the move to 133 lbs. this year. Trailing 1-0 entering the final period, the match was tied of a locked hands call against Clark and then Tomasello went ahead 2-1 with an escape. He scored a takedown with 34 seconds left, only to have Clark counter with a takedown of his own.

JORDAN TOPS HALL, BUCKEYES INCH CLOSER TO TITLE
After Penn State creeped to within two points in the team score following Zain Retherford’s win over Micah Jordan in the 149 lb. final, B. Jordan finished on a takedown in sudden victory against second-seeded Mark Hall to secure a 6-4 victory. The title, Jordan’s first, comes after two previous trips to the finals at 165 lbs. It also was an eight point swing in the team race, giving Ohio State much needed breathing room.

MOORE WINS BIG AT 197
Moore took the remaining drama out of the team race when he scored an impressive 15-11 win over top-seeded Brett Pfarr of Minnesota. Moore scored 11 first-period points, highlight by a takedown a four-point near fall, to give him all the distance he’d need on the scoreboard. Moore was also named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year.

SNYDER FINISHES IT OFF
Snyder added yet another line to his resume in the 285 final, topping second-seeded and second-ranked Connor Medbery of Wisconsin 8-5 behind two first-period takedowns and another in the third. Snyder is now a three-time Big Ten finalist and two-time champion. He’s won 23 collegiate matches in a row while over the last 12 months claiming two Big Ten crowns, a NCAA title and Olympic gold medal.

A HISTORITICAL CONTEXT

·Ohio State’s team title is the fourth in school history and first outright championship since 1951.

·The Buckeyes put six wrestlers into the finals – a program record – and the four champions are the most in school history. Ohio State also set a record with 139.0 team points.

·Head coach Tom Ryan earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors for the second time in the last three seasons.

·For the second time in the last four years, a pair of brothers wrestled for the Scarlet and Gray in the finals. In 2013, both Logan and Hunter Stieber did it; today, it was Micah and Bo Jordan.

NCAA AUTOMATIC QUALIFERS

Maryland Places Three at Big Ten Championships

Day One RecapFinal Brackets

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Redshirt sophomores Ryan Diehl (141) and Alfred Bannister (149), in addition to sophomore Youssif Hemida (285) all placed for Maryland to end the Big Ten Championships Sunday afternoon. Diehl and Bannister, in addition to senior Billy Rappo (133) all secured automatic qualifier bids to the 2017 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo.

The three placers is the most ever for the Terps in three years of competition at the Big Ten Championships, as the Terps took 11th in the team standings with 32 points.

Diehl added another highlight win to his Big Ten Championship resume, defeating #11 Tommy Thorn (Minnesota) in the fifth place match with a convincing 12-2 major decision. Diehl and the Gopher 141-pounder provided a ton of early action, before the Berkeley Springs, W.V. native connected on a cement mixer to go up 6-0 at the end of the first.

Diehl then fought off Thorn’s turn in the second period, and added an exclamation point on his weekend with another takedown/near fall combo to end the match. Diehl opened his day vs. 12th-ranked Luke Pletcher of Ohio State, wrestling the Buckeye tough through three periods. A pair of takedowns ultimately won it for Pletcher, 4-2.

In all, Diehl knocked off three top-20 opponents on the weekend, and will ride a solid wave of momentum into the NCAA Tournament. His fifth-place finish is the highest ever for a Terrapin wrestler at the event.

“Overall I was pretty happy,” said Diehl. “We had people going out there and getting bonus points, and just getting after it. It’s been an awesome last half of the season, and this weekend was a big confidence booster.”

Rappo wrestled one of the more wild matches of the early session, winning 7-5 in sudden victory to clinch an automatic qualifier bid to NCAAs. Rappo came out ahead in a hectic back-and-forth ninth place match with Wisconsin’s Eli Stickley. Rappo was the aggressor early, getting a quick first period takedown to take the lead.

Rappo began building riding time, but was reversed to even the score at two. The Holland, Pa. native avoided the turn from Stickley before the whistle in the first, and again took the lead in the second with a takedown. Stickley managed to escape to make it 4-3 to start the third, and erased Rappo’s ride time on top.

Stickley eventually built up the RT point in his favor, and Rappo was hit with a stall to make it 5-4. But, Rappo forced a locked hands call in the closing seconds on an escape attempt, and the matched sent to sudden victory. Rappo came through in overtime, hitting an ankle pick to win the 7-5 decision and clinch his first ever appearance at the NCAA Championships.

“This is what I’ve been wrestling for my entire career, to get to the NCAA Tournament,” said Rappo. “I’m really fortunate to have my coaches, teammates, trainer and support staff behind me. I got the job done this weekend, but we’re not finished yet.”

Youssif Hemida cemented a seventh place finish with his second win of the season over Northwestern’s Conan Jennings. Hemida never trailed in the match, getting a takedown and reversal for the eventual 4-1 decision. Hemida will await a potential at-large selection to NCAAs in the heavyweight class.

Bannister wrestled his eighth overtime match of the season in his consolation semifinal bout vs. Zach Hall (Michigan). Bannister and Hall both notched escapes in the second and third, sending the match into sudden victory. After neither could notch a takedown, Hall held in the first ride out period to keep the score at 1-1. Bannister cut the Wolverine grappler and went for the win in tiebreaker, but couldn’t get the take down and was bounced to the fifth place match. Bannister medicaly forfeited to take sixth.

Ohio State captured the team title with 139.5 points, followed by Penn State (130.0) and Iowa (112.5). Maryland will now prep for the 2017 NCAA Championships March 16-18 in St. Louis, Mo.

Medbery finishes runner-up at Big Ten ChampionshipsSix Badgers make it to the podium

http://www.uwbadgers.com/news/2017/...ishes-runner-up-at-big-ten-championships.aspx
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In a match that fans have been anticipating since the start of the season, No. 2 Connor Medbery and top-ranked Kyle Snyder of Ohio State lived up to the hype in the final bout of the Big Ten Championships at Indiana’s Assembly Hall. Medbery’s second-place title highlighted the final session for the Wisconsin wrestling team that finished in a tie for eighth place.

After trailing 4-1 following the first period, Medbery held 2016 Olympian Synder scoreless in the second. Medbery got on the board first in the third period with an early escape, but Snyder received one penalty point and takedown to bring the score to 6-2. With just 33 seconds remaining, Medbery wouldn’t go down without a fight as he recorded one more escape and takedown to cut Snyder’s lead to 6-5. One final escape and riding time handed Snyder the 8-5 decision in the battle of the undefeated. The second-place finish marked Medbery’s best finish in the Big Ten tournament.

In the extra-competitive 165-pound bracket, Isaac Jordan faced Penn State’s Vincenzo Joseph for the third-place title. Joseph got on the board first and back-to-back takedowns proved to be too much for Jordan to overcome as Joseph clinched the tight 5-2 decision.

Ricky Robertson got his hand raised in the fifth-place match at 197 pounds. Facing Rutgers’ Matt Correnti, Robertson recorded an early takedown to get things going and piled it on from there to walk away with the 9-1 major decision.

Up against Iowa’s Alex Meyer in the fifth place match, Ryan Christensen tallied a reversal in the second period but Meyer ultimately came away with the 4-2 decision.

NOTES TO KNOW:

-In all, six Badgers earned NCAA automatic qualifier bids as Hunter Ritter and Cole Martin secured their podium finishes in the prior session.

-With 67.5 points, Wisconsin tied Rutgers for eighth place. Ohio State took home the team title with 139.5 points, followed by Penn State with 130.

TALK FROM THE MAT:
“First session was great, second session we came out a little bit flat but some guys had some big wins too. Ricky came back to take fifth and Christensen gave himself a chance to win today and Martin won. There were areas that we could have been a little bit better, but it is what it is and now we just have to go back and regroup. We’ll talk about NCAAs and I’m hoping for a couple wildcards too on Tuesday.”

“You sit down and talk with them and ask them what they’re feeling out there, you watch video and then you work on those positions and work from there. There are going to be slight changes but nothing big because right now nothing is big so we just have to do slight adjustments to figure it out.”

-Head Coach Barry Davis

UP NEXT:
With the Big Ten Championships in the books, the Badgers will now set their sights on the NCAA Championships in St. Louis’ Scottrade Center from March 16-18.

BOONE, N.C. — Fourstudent-athletes will represent Appalachian State University wrestling on the biggest collegiate stage on Thursday when they battle in St. Louis for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship.

The Mountaineers had three wrestlers qualify by winning their respective weight class in the 2017 Southern Conference tournament and one wrestler qualify as an at-large candidate.

Appalachian is represented by seniors Denzel Dejournette at the heavyweight and Vito Pasone at the 125-pound division. The Black and Gold will also have sophomore Matt Zovistoski at 149 pounds and freshman 133-pounder Colby Smith.

Two-time SoCon Wrestler of the Year Dejournette went 23-5 to go along with both him and App State going undefeated in SoCon play at 6-0 and 7-0, respectively. Dejournette had 10 bonus point victories and two seven-match win streaks on the season. The senior was also named SoCon Wrestler of the Year this year. His 106 career victories rank him fifth all-time. In the conference tournament, he made quick work of his opponents, getting a 30-second pin to start things off before a 20-4 technical fall put him in the championship match where he won 7-4.

Zovistoski finished the season with a 23-8 record, including eight bonus point victories before being the champion at 149 pounds in the SoCon Tournament. He began with a 12-0 major decision over Joby Armenta of Gardner-Webb before narrowly defeating Ben Barton of Campbell with a 2-1 decision. Zovistoski then faced SIUE’s John Fahy for the first place batter where App State got the 6-5 decision victory.

SoCon all-conference selectionPasone went 14-7 on the season and 10-3 in duals – undefeated in league action. This year, the senior has seven bonus point victories, including a string of three straight over a group that included nationally ranked opponents. His 88 career victories place him eighth all-time at Appalachian. Pasone fell to Campbell’s Nathan Kraisser, 16-1, before he was able to battle back to blast Gardner-Webb’s Landon LoAlbo with a 20-7 major decision before defeating Alonzo Allen in an 18-1 technical fall in the third-place match.

Conference all-freshman selection Smith finished the regular season with an impressive 24 wins (14 bonus point victories) and only eight losses, going 13-3 in duals. He started off the conference tournament with a 9-1 major decision before getting another major decision when he defeated Jonathan Ryan of Campbell, 12-1, to get to the first place bout. The freshman would fall to Chattanooga’s Chris Debian 7-4 in double overtime to finish second overall.

ST. LOUIS, MO - With the EWL Championships closed and the at-large qualifiers announced, the dust has settled and the Broncs have qualified four wrestlers for the 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Missouri. Live video coverage will be provided on the ESPN family of networks, ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN app.

The Broncs left the EWL Championships with three qualifiers. These qualifications were given to their three EWL champions, juniors at 157 and 165 B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River HS South), Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), and senior 197 Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, DE/Caravel Academy).

During the at-large selection process, one Bronc managed to hit the selection lottery with Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) receiving a bid at 184 pounds for his third place finish at EWLs.

While the Broncs may not be seeing great quantity, they make up for the lack of wrestlers with great quality. The Broncs drew two top 10 seeds with Walsh seeded 5th overall at 165 and Wolfe seeded 8th at 197. Clagon and Fagg-Daves are both unseeded.

Clagon carries a tough draw at 157 pounds, being placed in the bracket’s single pigtail match against Colt Shorts of Cal Poly. Clagon must win this match in order to continue wrestling, as losing a pigtail eliminates you from the tournament. If Clagon were to win, he’d draw 8th-seeded Jake Short of Minnesota in the round of 32.

Walsh’s 5th seed set him up against unseeded Johnny Sebastian of Northwestern, where a victory will reward him with a possible rematch against Edinboro’s Austin Matthews for the third time this year. Walsh lost to Matthews in last year’s EWL finals, but has defeated him in both their meetings this year including for the 2017 EWL title.

Fagg-Daves is the only qualifier this year on his first trip to NCAA’s, and will have to learn on the fly with a tough round one matchup against 2016 NCAA finalist and 7th seed at 184 pounds T.J. Dudley of Nebraska.

Wolfe will begin his quest for an NCAA title with Jacob Holschlag of the University of Northern Iowa. Wolfe would draw two-time NCAA champion and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist J’Den Cox of Missouri if seeds were to hold through the round of eight.

Wrestling starts at the Scottrade Center Thursday morning with the first matches being kicked off at 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET, while All-American matches at the championship finals will take place on Saturday.

Dance, Hokies seek another big finish at NCAA Championships
The Tech senior enters the tournament with a 25-1 mark and is ready to rebound from his past two NCAA appearances

BLACKSBURG – Winter Storm Stella altered the travel plans up and down the East Coast, and those of the Virginia Tech wrestling team were of no exception. Her rain, sleet and snow forced the Tech contingent to spend Monday night in Charlotte, North Carolina before flying to St. Louis on Tuesday to get ready for the NCAA Wrestling Championships, which commence Thursday at noon.

The changes didn’t bother the Hokies. The seven wrestlers who qualified are more than ready to get the competition started – none more so than senior Joey Dance.

Dance, who enters Thursday’s first-round action with a sterling 25-1 record and a No. 2 ranking in his weight class by Intermat, already rates as one of the greatest wrestlers in program history. He became one of just five wrestlers to win three ACC championships when he claimed the 125-pound crown on March 3. His 109 wins stand 10th on Tech’s all-time list. He earned All-America honors as a freshman in 2014, becoming the first Tech wrestler to do so as a freshman.

Yet the past two NCAA appearances haven’t gone as one might have expected.

A year ago, he entered as the No. 2 seed at 125, but was upset 5-3 in the second round by No. 15 seed David Terao of American University and then lost 4-3 in the consolation round to Old Dominion’s Brandon Jeske. In 2015, he fell 7-5 in sudden victory in the quarterfinals to Iowa’s Thomas Gilman and then lost 3-1 in sudden victory to Conor Youtsey of Michigan.

He missed out on earning All-America honors both years, as the top eight in each weight class receive such recognition.

“I feel like at the last two NCAAs that I was too worried about losing,” Dance said in a recent interview. “I was out there not moving around too much and not trying to score a lot of points because I was so worried and so stressed out about losing the match.

“Now, if I just go out there and have fun and let the fur fly, then I can put up the points and not have to worry about winning 3-2 or 4-2. Just go out there and score points.”

So far this season, that is exactly what he has been doing. Fourteen of his 25 wins have been of the bonus variety. He won the prestigious Cliff Keen tournament out in Las Vegas in early December and then he won the Virginia Duals in dominating fashion in mid-January.

At the Virginia Duals, he won his first two matches by technical fall and then he beat North Dakota State’s Josh Rodriguez – who is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation – by a score of 5-3. In the finals, he pinned Oklahoma’s Christian Moody.

Three bonus-point wins in four matches are exactly the type of commanding performances any wrestler wants.

“I had a slow start [to the season]. I wasn’t winning matches by a big amount,” Dance said. “Then I went into the Virginia Duals with a different attitude. I realized that this is my senior year, and this is my last shot at really going after a national title. I looked at it that way and really just let it all fly and scored a lot of points.

“If I wrestle the same way I wrestled at the Virginia Duals, where I’m moving a lot and throwing a lot of fakes in there and getting guys to react to what I’m doing, then that’s when I’m at my best.”

Dance expects to be wrestling in the finals of his weight class on Saturday night. Of course, every wrestler harbors those same thoughts, but Dance went 10-1 against the 125-pound field this season, with the lone loss coming against Lehigh’s Darian Cruz, who is seeded fourth in the Championships.

The road, though, will not be easy. He faces a potential rematch with Youtsey in the second round, though he owns a win over Youtsey, having beaten him last year at the National Duals. Also, No. 3 seed Nick Suriano of Penn State sits on Dance’s side of the bracket, and if the bracket goes all chalk, then a rematch with Gilman and his 27-0 record await in the finals. Dance has beaten Gilman in the past – 3-1 in sudden victory at the Midlands Championships two seasons ago.

Survive and advance, however, needs to be the mantra both for Dance and the Hokies. All seven qualifiers were seeded, with Ty Walz being a No. 3 seed at heavyweight and both Zach Epperly (174 pounds) and Jared Haught (197 pounds) being No. 4 seeds. Zack Zavatsky was seeded fifth at 184 pounds, while Sal Mastriani came in 15th at 157.

Led mostly by these seven, the team spent nearly all season ranked in the top 10, much of it in the top five. The group knows how to win.

“Up and down the lineup, we have a lot of great guys,” Dance said. “We’re a big family. It’s really good if I go out there and get things started. If I do well, then they’ll see that and think, ‘OK, it’s time to get going. Joey did well, and I need to one-up him.’ We’ll try to out-do each other.

“I think this is the best team we’ve had. We could be a national championship team this year. I really do believe that. We have some guys that could sneak in there.”

Tech’s wrestling program has finished in the top 11 at the NCAA Championships for five consecutive years and in the top 10 on four straight occasions. It finished a program-best fourth a year ago.

Dance and the Hokies still want more. Despite Stella’s meddling, that road begins Thursday at noon.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After being announced as a semifinalist for the prestigious AAU James E. Sullivan Award last week, Big Ten, NCAA and Olympic champion Kyle Snyder is now a finalist and will attend the awards ceremony on Tuesday, April 11 at the New York Athletic Club in New York City.

The AAU Sullivan Award has been presented annually since 1930 to the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. Representatives from the AAU created the Sullivan Award with the intent to recognize contributions and achievements across the country of amateur athletes.

“I’m really honored to be a finalist for the 87th AAU James E. Sullivan Award,” said Snyder. “This award has been presented to some of the greatest athletes of all time, athletes that not only have reached the top of their game, but also competed with great character. I work extremely hard to be a leader in my sport and I am very humbled to be considered for such a prestigious prize.”

Fans can vote for Snyder starting today (Wednesday, March 15), through next Wednesday, March 22 at 11:59 p.m. Click here to vote Snyder: bit.ly/AAUSullivanAward2017

Snyder added a second Big Ten title at 285 lbs. to his two weeks ago, topping previously undefeated and second-ranked Connor Medbery of Wisconsin, 8-5. His win helped the Buckeyes win their second team title in the past three years. This weekend, he is the top seed at the NCAA Championships and is seeking his second consecutive title.

A junior from Woodbine, Md., Snyder is 12-0 this year and 10 of those wins coming by bonus points. Dating back to last season, he’s won 23 consecutive collegiate matches and averaged over 15 points per match with five falls, eight technical falls and five major decisions. In one of the most memorable championships matches in NCAA history, he ended Nick Gwiazdowski’s 88-match win streak in front of a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden.

On the international scene, Snyder won the gold medal at 97kg last August in the Rio Games, becoming the youngest gold medalist in U.S. wrestling history and first active Ohio State student-athlete to win an Olympic championship since Jerry Lucas (basketball) in 1960. Most recently, he won the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia, regarded as the toughest Open international freestyle event of the year.

Only three wrestlers have ever won the James E. Sullivan Award, Olympic champions John Smith (1990), Bruce Baumgartner (1995) and Rulon Gardner (2000).

Four Hoosiers enter the greatest weekend of the wrestling season

Story Link | Brackets | Weekend Notes | WatchESPN | Schedule

March 15, 2017

ST. LOUIS – The best weekend in college wrestling is nearly upon us.

The Hoosiers enter four wrestlers to this year's installment at the Scottrade Center. Nate Jackson (184) leads the pack as Indiana's lone senior in the championships. Sophomore Elijah Oliver (125) joins Jackson for the second year running, as he was his travel partner from last season. Jake Danishek (157) and Devin Skatzka (174) double Indiana's travel party as first-time qualifiers this year.

The weekend is, as always, bound to be jam-packed with thrilling matchups, stunning upsets, and ultimately, 10 sets of hands raised as NCAA Champions. Let's see what the weekend has in store for the Hoosier wrestlers.
2017 NCAA Championships
March 16-18 • St. Louis, Mo. • Scottrade Center
First Round Matchups

125: Elijah Oliver (Indiana) vs. (8) Nick Piccininni (Oklahoma State)
157: (Pigtail): Jake Danishek (Indiana) vs. (2) Michael Kemerer (Iowa)
174: Devin Skatzka (Indiana) vs. (2) Brian Realbuto (Cornell)
184: (8) Nate Jackson (Indiana) vs. Alex DeCiantis (Drexel)Last Time: Four Punch NCAA Tickets
The Hoosiers took advantage of a grand opportunity, hosting the Big Ten Championships at Indiana's Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, by qualifying four wrestlers to the ensuing NCAA Championships. Leading the way for Indiana were Nate Jackson (184) and Elijah Oliver (125), who took sixth-place finishes after reaching the championship semifinals.

Devin Skatzka (174) put on a show in the Carnegie Hall of college basketball. His seventh-place finish included a trio of wins and a near-upset of No. 3 Bo Jordan (Ohio State) in the quarterfinals.

The last to join the party was Jake Danishek (157) who secured two wins in his last two matches to take the final qualifying spot at his weight, winning the ninth-place match over Jake Ryan (Ohio State).

One More Chance
The Hoosier fans have eyes fixated on Nate Jackson's final NCAA tournament run, the third of his career. After a 3-2 showing as a sophomore, Jackson took the mat last season and made a marauding run to the semifinals, giving up zero takedowns in his first three bouts. A last-second takedown pushed No. 2 Bo Nickal (Penn State) past Jackson, who eventually finished in fifth-place with his first All-American Honors.

This year, Jackson is just one state removed from his hometown of Crete, Illinois, and will leave it all on the mat. He begins with Alex DeCiantis (Drexel). With a win, he would likely meet No. 8 Jack Dechow (ODU) for a possible spot against Hodge front-runner Gabe Dean (Cornell) in the championship quarterfinals.

Welcome to the NCAAs
Jake Danishek (157) and Devin Skatzka (174) will receive anything but a warm welcome in their first NCAA Championships. Both randomly drew into a first-round matchup against the second-seeded wrestler in their respective brackets.

For Skatzka, that's a showdown with No. 2 Brian Realbuto (Cornell). Realbuto is a two-time All-American and a finalist at 157 lbs. in 2014, but Skatzka hasn't wavered against top competition this season. It'll be his highest-ranked opponent of the season; recently, he faced No. 3 Bo Jordan and pushed the Buckeye to a 10-7 decision in Jordan's favor.

Danishek faces a rematch with No. 2 Michael Kemerer (Iowa), whose only two losses came from top-ranked Jason Nolf (Penn State). Kemerer won the last meeting in Bloomington with a 2:26 fall.

Back in Action
The Hoosiers' exciting lightweight, Elijah Oliver (125), makes his second appearance at the NCAA Championships as a sophomore. Last year, he cut his postseason teeth with a No. 16 seed, eventually bowing out with losses to No. 1 Nathan Tomasello (Ohio State) and Freddie Rodriguez (SIUE).

This year, he enters unseeded and draws No. 8 Nick Piccininni (Oklahoma State). Piccininni was one of the Cowboys' eight Big XII Champions and posted a 22-6 record in his first freshman season.

Watch Live with the Worldwide Leader
Once again, all of the NCAA Championships action will air live on the ESPN family of networks. The afternoon sessions (I, III, & V) will air live on ESPNU; the primetime sessions (II, IV, & VI) will be broadcast live on ESPN.

Additionally, every individual mat will stream live on ESPN3 and WatchESPN. Check the season schedule on IUHoosiers.com for links.

Back Points…
• Head coach Duane Goldman has now brought at least one wrestler to the NCAA Championships in all 25 seasons with Indiana. He has led 53 of those grapplers to 80 All-American honors.
Nate Jackson leads the Hoosiers in total takedowns (130), riding time points awarded (14), and bonus point wins (18).
Devin Skatzka (174) has a commanding team lead for the most pins this season with 10. He's scored two wins by fall against Big Ten grapplers.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

- All four Panthers earned automatic qualifying spots out of the ACC Championship March 4 in Raleigh, N.C.

- Forys entered the Championship as the No. 1 seed at 133 pounds and needed to reach the finals in order to punch his ticket to St. Louis. In his first match, he picked up an 8-4 win over Virginia Tech’s Dennis Gustafson in the semifinals. The Pittsburgh native then faced familiar foe Jamal Morris of NC State where he won in a 5-0 decision en route to his first ACC title.

- Rahmani entered his first conference championship as the No. 3 seed and also just needed one win to secure his spot to NCAAs. The 157-pounder won his first match by major decision before avenging a regular season loss as he recorded a 4-2 win over NC State’s Thomas Bullard. In the finals, Rahmani made a statement by picking up a 13-5 major decision over top-seeded Sal Mastriani of Virginia Tech.

- Campbell’s situation at 165 pounds was nearly identical to Forys: entered as the No. 1 seed and needed to reach the finals to earn an automatic qualification. The Pittsburgh native received a first round bye before cruising to a 12-4 decision over Virginia’s Ray Bethea. In the finals, the sophomore captured his first ACC title after shutting out NC State’s Brian Hamann, 7-0.

- Although placing third at the Championship, Solomon was one of four heavyweights to earn an automatic bid out of the ACC. The Milton, Pa., native, started the day strong winning by technical fall, 17-1, over Virginia’s Tyler Love, but was unable to hold off Duke’s Jacob Kasper in sudden victory. Solomon worked his way to the podium after defeating NC State’s Mike Kosoy, 2-0, and posting a 5-3 decision over North Carolina’s Cory Daniel.

MARCH TO THE ARCH

- The NCAA Championships return to St. Louis for the eighth time and last hosted in 2015.

- The 2015 Championships saw Pitt’s 174-pounder Tyler Wilps earn a runner-up finish.

- St. Louis first hosted in 2000. Iowa and Iowa State took the top two places that year, respectively.

- The Scottrade Center is home to the St. Louis Blues NHL team, which first opened its doors in 1994, seats 22,000 people.

PANTHERS IN THE CORNERS

- Pitt’s current coaching staff is made up of three alumni and are among some familiar faces in St. Louis as five other former Panthers will be coaching at this year’s NCAA Championships:

- Pat Santoro, Head Coach at Lehigh / Pitt, ‘89 – Pitt’s only four-time All-American and is a two-time national champion

- Keith Gavin, Assistant Coach at Oklahoma / Pitt, ‘08 – Pitt’s last national champion (2008), two-time All-American

- Zack Sheaffer, Assistant Coach at Drexel / Pitt, ’09 – All-American and three-time NCAA qualifier

- Shelton Mack, Volunteer Assistant Coach at Virginia / Pitt, ’14 – Three-time NCAA qualifier

- Michael Gregory, Volunteer Assistant Coach at Harvard / Pitt, ’14

Dennison's run continues at NCAA Championship
3/16/2017 | Wrestling
ST. LOUIS, Missouri - Utah Valley University junior Dustin Dennison stayed alive at the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships with a pair of wins on Thursday night at Scottrade Center. Dennison will face Appalachian State senior Denzel Dejournette, the No. 9 seed, in Friday morning's session, which begins at 10 a.m. CT/9 a.m. MT and can be seen on ESPNU and ESPN3.com.

Freshman Tanner Orndorff (197 pounds) went 1-1 during the evening session, seeing his maiden run at the championships come to an end after finishing the day 1-2.

"I thought both guys wrestled well. They didn't wrestle intimidated at all, they looked fresh and solid throughout their matches," UVU head coach Greg Williams said.

Dennison (285 pounds) wrapped up Friday's action with a commanding 9-3 win over Joseph Goodhart of Drexel. Tied 2-2 in the second, Dennison took the lead with a takedown before riding out Goodhart for the rest of the period. He pulled away with a pair of takedowns in the third and capped it with riding time.

"He's (Dustin) been wrestling really well and has been very aggressive. He had a tough first-round draw but had a chance to win it and has looked really good in the last two matches," Williams said.

Wrestling simultaneously on neighboring mats early in Thursday's evening session, Orndorff and Dennison both staved off elimination, each garnering their first NCAA Tournament wins within moments of one another.

Orndorff survived a comeback attempt by Rutgers' Matt Correnti to win 11-6 while Dennison scored a late takedown to upend Zack Parker of Ohio, 3-1.

At 197 pounds, Orndorff took a commanding 8-0 lead before Correnti nearly erased the deficit with back points right before the end of the second period. Orndorff gave himself a cushion in the third and also accumulated 3:40 of riding time to pick up the win. Dennison was tied with Parker at 1-1 in the third before earning the win with the decisive takedown.

In his final match, Orndorff was locked in a 3-3 tie with 15th-seeded Ricky Robertson of Wisconsin before succumbing to a fall in the second period.

"I came in here expecting to win but it didn't go as I'd hoped. I made some mistakes but it's all part of the process. I'm just trying to learn from each of the losses and build for next year," Orndorff said.

No. 14 UNI wrestling at NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships
March 16-18, 2017
St. Louis, Missouri • Scottrade Center

March 17 schedule (CT):

March 18 schedule (CT):

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Two Panthers are still alive for an NCAA title at the national wrestling tournament, while four more are still in the hunt for third place.

The team was tied for 16th place after the first day.

Max Thomsen at 149 pounds and Drew Foster at 184 pounds are making the most of their national debut with two wins on the championship side of the bracket.

Foster avenged a loss to Virginia Tech’s No. 5 Zack Zavatsky with a 4-3 decision.

“I am really ecstatic, but I’m not done,” said Foster “It’s just one win. So basically, I take the five seed and keep climbing.”

He will have the chance to avenge another loss when he faces No. 5 Nolan Boyd of Oklahoma State. Boyd beat Foster, 10-5 before Foster was forced to sit out the rest of the tournament due to injury during that match.

“I think he is competing as well as I have ever seen him compete,” said head coach Doug Schwab. “It’s a testament to him and what he has done and the work he has put in. I am excited for that match tomorrow.”

Thomsen faced two opponents he had beaten earlier in the season.

“He’s attacking in big situations,” said Schwab.

He will face No. 15 Ken Theobold of Rutgers tomorrow. Theobold beat Thomsen 8-1 last year at Midlands when Thomsen competed unattached as a true freshman.

“Right now is the big dance, and when you’re wrestling upperclassmen, you know, this is some of their last chances at this tournament,” said Thomsen. “So they are coming at me hard, and I just need to keep on wrestling.”

CONSOLATIONS

Two-time All-American Dylan Peters (125 pounds) lost his first-round match to No. 4 Darian Cruz of Lehigh before bouncing back with two wins, including one that bumped Barlow McGhee of Missouri out of the tournament. McGhee beat Peters mid-February.

Peters was down 6-0 before taking down Sean Nickell of Bakersfield with an 8-7 decision to stay alive.

“He is fighting through it,” said Schwab. “You get down 6-0 in that match and it’s easy to bag it. How many guys got pinned this round? Guys were bagging it left and right. To have him have that kind of guts and fight, that’s the kind of kid he is. That’s why I am so proud of him and how he is fighting for this team.”

Peters has the chance to be UNI’s 10th Panther to earn three Division I All-America honors. He faces Buffalo’s Kyle Akins Friday.

After a first-round win by fall, Josh Alber fell to the 133-pound consolations with a 5-2 loss to No. 5 Stevan Micic. It will be a MAC Championship rematch for Alber, as he will face No. 23 Corey Keener of Central Michigan. Alber beat Keener 9-2 for third place at the MAC.

Bryce Steiert had a first-round win but was bumped to consolations by 165-pound MAC champion Daniel Lewis, who won 6-0. He will face Cole Walter of Lehigh, whom he beat 8-3 at the Southern Scuffle earlier this year.

At 174 pounds, Taylor Lujan looked to avenge a loss to No. 4 Zach Epperly of Virginia Tech, but Epperly edged him out, 5-2.

Session 2: Rahmani Returns to Win Column

Forys, Campbell, Solomon suffer losses, move to consolation brackets

Updated Brackets | Photo Gallery

ST. LOUIS – Redshirt freshman Taleb Rahmani defeated ACC-foe Andrew Atkinson of Virginia in the first round of consolations to survive and advance to another day of competition at the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

The three Panthers competing in the round of 16 all dropped their matches, but will wrestle in the consolation rounds Friday morning looking to reach their eventual goal of All-America status.

Session 3 of the Championships is set to get underway at 11 a.m. ET and will feature quarterfinals and wrestlebacks. The Friday night session of semifinals and wrestlebacks starts at 8 p.m. ET.

SESSION 2 RECAP

Round of 16 - 133 pounds - Bryan Lantry (BUF) dec. Dom Forys (UP), 5-3

Forys fell behind late in the opening frame as Lantry took him down with under one minute to go. Starting on bottom, Forys quickly escaped to cut Lantry’s lead to 2-1. Forys then took a 3-2 lead late in the second off a takedown. Lantry started the third on bottom and escaped to tie it 3-3 with one minute to go. He then secured the win with a takedown with under 10 seconds on the clock.

Lantry handed Forys just his second loss of the season and snapped his 13-match win streak that began Jan. 14.

UP NEXT: Forys will face first-time opponent Austin Eicher of Michigan State.

Round of 16 - 165 pounds – Anthony Valencia (ASU) dec. TeShan Campbell (UP), 9-2

Campbell and Valencia got off to a slow start in the first period as Valencia took down Campbell about two minutes into the first. Campbell quickly escaped and trailed 2-1 entering the second where he would start on bottom. The sophomore tied it 2-2 after an escape, however neither wrestler would score any more points in the second. Campbell started the third on top and Valencia escaped to take a 3-2 lead. He extended his lead late in the third to what would be the final after a takedown and four nearfall points, 9-2.

The loss is Campbell’s third on the year and snapped his 14-match win streak.

UP NEXT: Campbell is set to face North Dakota State’s Andrew Fogarty for the first time.

Round of 16 – 285 pounds – Connor Medbery (WISC) dec. Ryan Solomon (UP), 5-0

Solomon suffered his first loss of the NCAA Championships to the No. 2 seed from Wisconsin, Connor Medbery, 5-0. After a scoreless first period, Medbery escaped in the first and wouldn’t score again until the third. The Badger picked up two nearfall points and added on a penalty point and riding time en route to the decision.

UP NEXT: Solomon will take on Newton Smerchek of Central Michigan Friday morning.

Cons. First Round – 157 pounds – Taleb Rahmani (UP) maj. dec. Andrew Atkinson (UVA), 18-7

Rahmani was able to avenge a regular season loss in thrilling fashion as he downed Virginia’s Andrew Atkinson in an 18-7 major decision in the first round of consolations. The redshirt sophomore built up a 6-4 lead at the conclusion of the opening frame. Rahmani jumped to the eventual final score, 18-7, in the second period and never looked back.

UP NEXT: Rahmani will face Josh Shields of Arizona State in the second round of consolations. The two last met at the 2016 Midlands Championships, which resulted in Shields picking up a 12-3 major decision over Rahmani.

Four remain in contention at nationals
3/16/2017 | Wrestling
ST. LOUIS - South Dakota State University wrestlers Seth Gross and Alex Kocer each advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships by winning a pair of matches Thursday at Scottrade Center.

Gross, the second-seeded wrestler in the 133-pound weight class, outscored his opponents by a 20-0 margin in improving to 32-1 this season. A sophomore from Apple Valley, Minnesota, Gross posted a dominating 5-0 decision over Maryland's Billy Rappo during the morning session. He scored an early takedown and kept Rappo on the mat for the majority of the match, racking up nearly six minutes of riding time.

In the Round of 16 Thursday night, Gross raced out to a 6-0 first-period lead en route to a 15-0 technical fall victory over unseeded Joseph Palmer of Oregon State.

Gross will attempt to avenge his only loss of the season in Friday morning's quarterfinals as he meets seventh-seeded Eric Montoya of Nebraska. Montoya, 28-4 overall, defeated Gross, 2-0, in overtime Dec. 30 at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Illinois.

Alex Kocer, who was making his third NCAA appearance, knocked off a pair of seeded wrestlers to move on to Friday's quarterfinals. A senior from Wagner, Kocer drew eighth-seeded Patricio Lugo of Edinboro in the first round of the 149-pound division. Trailing 4-2 entering the third period, Kocer recorded an escape and takedown in the third period, then picked up the decisive point with a riding-time advantage for a 6-5 victory.

Kocer, who improved to 29-8 this season, came away with a 5-4 victory over ninth-seeded Justin Oliver of Central Michigan in the night session. The match was tied at 4-all entering the third period with Kocer in the top position. He rode out the entire period, holding off an Oliver attempt at a reversal in the closing seconds, to pick up the decisive point.

In Friday's quarterfinals, Kocer will meet top-seeded Zain Retherford of Penn State.

Also advancing to the second day of competition were 165-pounder Luke Zilverberg and Nate Rotert at 197 pounds.

Zilverberg went 2-1 in Thursday action, opening competition with a 6-5 victory over Tyrel White of Columbia in a preliminary round match. In the Round of 32 later in the morning session, Zilverberg dropped an 8-0 major decision to sixth-seeded Daniel Lewis of Missouri.

A junior from Belle Plaine, Minnesota, Zilverberg stayed alive in the championships with a 4-3 decision over Andrew Mendel of Army. He will meet 12th-seeded Austin Matthews of Edinboro in the wrestlebacks Friday morning.

Rotert, seeded ninth at 197 pounds, was knocked off by North Carolina's Daniel Chaid, 10-5, in first-round action. He came back in the evening session to record a 4-1 decision over Northern Iowa's Jacob Holschlag to set up a third meeting this season with Nebraska's Aaron Studebaker in Friday morning's wrestlebacks.

Studebaker, seeded seventh, defeated Rotert in the finals of the Midlands Championships in December, while Rotert scored an overtime win in the first matchup of the season at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open in November.

David Kocer was the lone Jackrabbit qualifier to be eliminated on Thursday as he turned in a 1-2 record. Kocer began the day with an 8-2 loss to fifth-seeded Mark Hall of Penn State.

Kocer opened the evening session by avenging a loss he suffered to Matt Reed of Oklahoma at the Big 12 Conference Championship two weeks ago, turning in a convincing 8-0 major decision over the Sooner wrestler. However, Kocer was eliminated by another nemesis later in the evening as Penn's Casey Kent knocked Kocer out of the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row with a 6-0 decision. Kocer ended his junior season with a 24-10 record.

The Jackrabbits ended Day 1 tied for 21st in the team standings with nine points to rank second among Big 12 Conference schools. Penn State leads the team race with 30.5 points, followed by Ohio State (26), Oklahoma State (25.5) and Iowa (24.5). Missouri rounds out the top five with 20 points.

Friday's morning session begins at 10 a.m.

NU WRESTLING: Conan Jennings Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Redshirt-sophomore Conan Jennings put forth a remarkable effort on the first day of the NCAA Championships, pulling two major upsets and doing so convincingly to advance to the quarterfinals in front of more than 18,000 fans at the Scottrade Center.

"Conan does a great job of just taking it one match a time," head coach Matt Storniolo said. "He knows where he is good, and he knows where he doesn't want to be. He is a fighting fool, and when you work that hard, good things happen.”

Jennings started his day with a 4-0 shutout of No. 11 seed Jared Johnson from Chattanooga in the first round. He then picked up a huge win in the Round of 16, dominating No. 6 Austin Schafer of Oklahoma State to the tune of an 8-0 major decision.

"I had been losing to these guys by one or two points all year, and it has been killing me," Jennings said. "I am just not going to let it happen anymore. I am going to go out there and give it my all every match and leave nothing behind.”

The heavyweight from Centerville, Ohio, will wrestle No. 3 Ty Walz of Virginia Tech in the quarterfinal round tomorrow morning, which will be televised live on ESPNU.

Junior 184-pounder Mitch Sliga also advanced to Day 2 by going 1-1 on Thursday. Sliga had a tough opener, taking on No. 2 Bo Nickal of Penn State, and he dropped that match by 15-0 tech fall. But he bounced back and beat Jason Grimes of American 7-2 in the wrestleback round to stay alive. Sliga will wrestle No. 16 Jordan Ellingwood of Central Michigan in the second round of wrestlebacks tomorrow morning.

Both Johnny Sebastian and Jacob Berkowitz saw their time at the NCAA championships come to an end on Thursday.

Session III starts at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Redshirt-sophomore Sean Fausz (125 pounds) and junior Kevin Jack (141) both went 2-0 in the first day of the 2017 NCAA Championships and have advanced to the quarterfinals. In all, six of the Pack’s 10 NCAA Qualifiers have advanced to the second day of action, as four more are alive in the consolation brackets.

Action resumes at 11 AM (ET) tomorrow starting with the quarterfinals then two rounds of the consolation brackets.

Round of 16 Recap

The Pack started the day’s second session with four in the Round of 16.

R-So. Sean Fausz was the first to punch his ticket into the quarterfinals. After a pin in his first round bout, #12 seeded Fausz downed #5 seed Tim Lambert of Nebraska 3-1 to advance to the quarters. Fausz took a couple of shots in the first, and on his third attempt he landed the takedown to go up 2-0 after the opening period. An escape point to start the second pushed the lead to 3-0. Lambert would get his own escape point to start the third, but could not answer Fausz’s first period takedown.

Jr. Kevin Jack also picked up a second win on the day to advance to the quarterfinals. The #2 seed at 141 pounds started the day with a 10-0 major decision, and followed that win up with a 4-0 defeat of #15 seed Tyler Smith of Bucknell in the night session. St. Louis, Mo. – Nebraska won six of seven matches during Session I of the NCAA Championships at the Scottrade Center on Thursday afternoon.

The Huskers are in 10th place as a team with 9.5 points. Penn State leads the team race with 16 points, while Oklahoma State (15) and Ohio State (14) round out the top three.

After the Huskers opened with four decisions, seniors TJ Dudley (No. 7 seed at 184) and Aaron Studebaker (No. 7 seed at 197) provided a spark with bonus points in each of their matches. Dudley, a two-time All-American and 2016 NCAA runner-up, won a 17-0 technical fall over Rider’s Michale Fagg-Daves in 3:49. The win marked Dudley’s team-leading 11th technical fall of the season, as 22 of his 28 wins in 2016-17 are by bonus points.

Studebaker, a three-time NCAA qualifier, pinned Princeton’s Brett Harner in 4:52. The fall marked Studebaker’s fourth of the season, as he improves to 28-8. Studebaker has made the Round of 12 at the NCAA Championships in each of the last two seasons.

No. 5 seed Tim Lambert (125) opened Nebraska’s tournament with a 9-2 decision over Brock Hudkins (Northern Illinois). Lambert, making his fourth NCAA appearance, is 29-6 this season following the first-round victory.

Reigning All-American Eric Montoya, the No. 7 seed at 133 pounds, notched a 6-1 decision over Cornell’s Mark Grey in the first round. Berger, the No. 4 seed at 157 pounds, defeated Garder-Webb’s Ryan Mosley, 9-2. Berger is making his second NCAA Championships appearance after advancing to the Round of 12 as a redshirt freshman last season.

The six Huskers who won in Session I will compete in the second round tonight. No. 13 seed Collin Jensen (HWT), who fell to NC State’s Mike Kosoy by a 5-2 decision, will compete in the consolation bracket tonight.
