DATE: February 8, 2019

NORFOLK, Va. – Delaware took the opener 3-1 before dropping an 8-7 heartbreaker in the nightcap as the Blue Hens split a season-opening doubleheader at Norfolk State Friday night in head coach Jen Steele’s UD debut.

Delaware took the lead in the opener in the top of the third as Hanna Garber singled to left, move to second on an obstruction call, and scored when Reyna de Jesus singled to center. However the Spartans pulled even in the bottom of the fourth when Shelby Deschamps crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice.

The Blue Hens regained the lead in the top of the sixth as de Jesus reached on an error, moved to third on a single by Anna Steinmetz, and scored when Brooke Glanden laced a single to right. One out later pinch runner Julia Solderitch crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Karolina Flores.

UD freshman Katie Stahre then fired the final two of her three scoreless relief innings, allowing just two hits, to earn the victory in her first career appearance for the Blue Hens.

Norfolk State jumped out to a big lead in the nightcap, scoring twice in the bottom of the first, three times in the second and two more in the third to take a 7-0 advantage. But the Blue Hens would not quit.

Brittney Mendoza drove home Steinmetz and Flores with a double in the fourth before scoring on a Sarah Bessel single to cut the margin to 7-3. The following frame Glanden doubled home Garber, while Halle Kisamore then singled home Solderitch as Delaware pulled within a pair.

Mendoza then reached on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded in the seventh, allowing Glanden and Flores to score to tie the game at 7-7. The Blue Hens had a chance to take the lead later in the inning, but Flores was thrown out trying to steal home.

In the bottom of the seventh Hunter Halford led off with a single and eventually scored on a two-out double by Makenna Heimann to give the Spartans the victory.

Glanden led the Blue Hens with four hits on the day, while Steinmetz added three.

Fri, February 15, 2019
Charleston, S.C. (Feb. 15, 2019) --- Starter Garrett Lawson threw 6.2 solid innings and freshman Jeremy tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to lead Delaware State to a 3-1 victory over The Citadel in the Hornets’ 2019 opener at Riley Field this afternoon.

DSU scored first with three runs in the top of the seventh inning, highlighted by run-scoring hits by shortstop Tommy Jordan and designated hitter Tripp Kimmell.

Lawson, who was limited to just five games due to injury in 2018, allowed just two singles in the first six innings. The Hornets ahead 3-1 when he was relieved by Carrow after being touched for two hits and a run in the seventh. Carrow allowed a single to the first batter he faced to put Citadel runners on second and first with two outs, but recorded the third out on pop up to end the threat.

The Bulldogs put a runner on base in the eighth and ninth innings off Carrow, but were unable to score.

Lawson allowed just four singles, while striking out six without a walk to earn the win. He is 2-0 in his career vs. The Citadel. He also defeated the Bulldogs as a freshman in 2017.

Carrow allowed three hits, but also did not walk a batter.

“We were hoping to get five, maybe six innings out of Garrett and he delivered in a big way,” said Delaware State head coach J.P. Blandin. “He was really in command with great location throughout the game. Jeremey was extremely poised for a guy pitching his first college game. We couldn’t ask for more from our pitchers today. A good win to start the season.”

The game was scoreless until the DSU seventh. First baseman Miguel Rivera singled to lead off the inning. The next batter, right fielder Mark Herron, reached base on a fielder’s choice, with pinch runner Brandon Bly advancing to second on the play. After the next two batters went down on strikes, the Hornets still had runners at second and first with two outs when Kimmell singled through the left side to send home Bly with the first run of the game. Jordan followed with a single to center, scoring Herron from second to give DSU a 2-0 lead. The Hornets scored their third run of the inning on a dropped fly ball off the bat of John Weglarz.

The Hornets outhit the Bulldogs 10-6. Jordan led the way with three hits in five at bats.

“We had some scoring opportunities early in the game, but the pitchers kept The Citadel at bay until we picked some clutch hits in the seventh,” said Blandin.

The Hornets also did not commit an error in the contest.

The teams will play game two of their three-game series on Saturday. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Senior righty Sean McGrath is the scheduled starter for the Hornets.

SUBJECT: Three Homer Inning Plus Hyatt’s Dominance Powers Wilmington Baseball Past #19 St. Thomas Aquinas, 14-3

DATE: February 23, 2019
djl

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - A three homer fourth inning powered the Wilmington University baseball team past No. 19 St. Thomas Aquinas, 14-3, on Saturday night at the Ripken Experience’s Crosley Field.

The Wildcats (3-0) continued its solid start to eh 2019 season with great pitching and powerful hitting, scoring in five straight innings en route to the big win. St. Thomas Aquinas is ranked No. 19 in the latest NCBWA National Poll.

As the previous two games, the stage was set with powerful pitching from the Wildcats’ starter Dan Hyatt. Hyatt would end up striking out the side in the bottom of the first, and end with 12 strikeouts in six innings of work.

The scoring started in the top of the second for the Wildcats, as Julian Kurych nearly had a grand slam, but settled for a sacrifice fly to the wall for the 1-0 lead. A wild pitch brought in Darren Donastorg for the early 2-0 lead.

Luke Johnson continued his hot start in the third inning, knocking in Kendall Small with a single through the right side. St. Thomas Aquinas got to Hyatt in the third inning, as a one-out walk came around to score on an RBI double off the wall in center.

But that is when the fun started for the Wildcats.

Dakota Graham took the first pitch he saw in the top of the fourth inning and deposited it over the wall in right for the solo blast, 4-1. Kurych walked and moved to third on a sacrifice and a wild pitch, but would have come home from anywhere as Kendall Small launched a two-run shot to center to put the Wildcats up 6-1. Two batters later, Brooks Ryan set a ball into the night in left center, capping a three-homer inning and giving the Wildcats a 7-1 lead.

With the bases loaded in the fifth, Eddie Nevins doubled to the gap in right center, scoring two more to make it double-digits for the second time in three games, 10-1.

Luke Johnson capped the scoring in the top of the ninth, bringing in both Matt Frost, who doubled, and Brett Nowell to bring the game to 14-3.

Hyatt allowed one run on three hits, striking out 12 while only giving up two walks. Rich Albrecht made his collegiate debut in the seventh before Mike Cottrell and Ryan Bradigan finished out the game with clean innings. Bradigan struck out two in the ninth.

Brooks Ryan finished 3-for-5 with a home run while Dakota Graham went 3-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored. Eddie Nevins went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Luke Johnson was the final Wildcat with multiple hits, going 2-for-6 with three RBI.

Baltimore, Md. (Feb. 25, 2019) --- Kevin Larkin led three Delaware State double-figure scorers with 16 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds to key the Hornets’ 70-60 MEAC men’s basketball win over Coppin State at the CSU Physical Education Complex Monday evening.

DSU snapped a three-game losing streak and avenged a 64-60 home loss to Coppin State on Jan. 7 to improve to 5-21 overall and 2-11 in the MEAC. The Eagles dropped their second in a row to fall to 6-23 and 6-8.

Larkin’s point total included the 1000th of his college career on a first half basket. Despite missing five of the Hornets’ 26 games, Larkin has a team-high 345 points this season.

Jonathan Mitchell came off the bench to add 15 points, while D’Marco Baucum contributed 11 points to the win.

“We had major contributions from so many guys this evening,” said Delaware State first-year head coach Eric Skeeters, who led the Hornets to their second road win of the season. “Of course, Kevin (Larkin) was not only aggressive offensively, but played big on the boards with 18 rebounds. Jon Mitchell gave us some gutsy play off the bench and we were solid for most of the game on the defensive end.”

The Hornets forced Coppin State into 18.5% shooting in the first half (5-for-27) and 29.4% for the game (15-for-51).

Delaware State also held a 46-35 rebound advantage.

The Hornets led 28-26 at the half, and pulled ahead 52-41 when Pinky Wiley (9 points) hit a three-point basket and free throw with 11:29 left to play.

After DSU led 57-46 on another three-pointer by Wiley, Coppin State went on a late second half run to pull back into the game.

Ibn Williams capped off the 9-2 Eagle rally with a three-pointer to cut the Hornets’ lead to 59-55 at the 4:45 mark of the second half.

Delaware State responded with a 6-2 run off its own, and opened up a 65-57 lead on a jump hook in the lane by Ronald Lucas with 1:58 remaining.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - - After taking the lead in the top of the seventh, the 21st ranked Wilmington University baseball team couldn’t hold off Barry, as the Sunshine State foes took the 12-9 victory on Tuesday night Feinbloom Field.

The Wildcats (5-3) scored four runs in the sixth and three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-8 lead, but the Buccaneers battled right back with a four spot in the bottom of the seventh to take the nonconference contest.

Kendall Small remained red hot to start the season, coming up with an RBI single in the top of the first. But Barry fought back to tie the game in the home half of the first with a two-out RBI single.

Brooke Ryan started the top of the second off with an opposite field home run, giving the Wildcats the lead once more, 2-1. WilmU starter Kyle Maxwell left a pair of runners on in the second, and retired the side in order in the third before the Buccaneers struck in the fourth.

A leadoff double would come around to score, as Barry picked up another two-out RBI with a single into right center, tying the game, 2-2.

Barry would open the scoring and take a big lead with a six-run fifth inning. Another leadoff double would score for the Bucs, but the big damage was a two-out, three-run double to center. At the fifth inning, the home team led 8-2.

The Wildcats answered back quickly however, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth. Two walks and a single started the inning, loading the bases with no outs. Frank Nigro brought in a pair with a two-run single while Darren Donastorg followed suit with another two-run single, bringing the Wildcats to within 8-6.

Small started the top of the seventh off with a single and the Wildcats had runners on second and third with one out. Luke Johnson brought both runners in with a single up the middle, and three batters later Luke Johnson forced in the go-ahead run with a bases loaded walk, 9-8.

But the lead wouldn’t hold for the Wildcats, as three errors in the bottom of the seventh hurt the visitors. A single and a walk started the inning, while a wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs. The Bucs then scored a run each on an error, a fielder’s choice, a balk, and a dropped fly ball in the inning.

The Wildcats went quietly in the eighth and left a two-out walk on first in the ninth to end the game.

Darren Donastorg went 3-for-4 with two RBI while Kendall Small, Luke Johnson, and Frank Nigro all collected two hits each. Johnson and Nigro added two RBI each as well.

The Wildcats continue within the Sunshine State Conference with their next game, as they head to West Palm Beach to play Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

The Hornets again pulled to within one with a run in the seventh. Alex Vasquez doubled with one and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Bly. Vasquez scored DSU’s second run of the game on a passed ball.

Norfolk State responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh when Womack singled home Dionte Brown, who doubled to lead off the inning, to stretch the Spartans’ lead to 4-2.

NSU added three insurance runs in the eighth on two sac flies and a wild pitch.

Walker (2-3) pitched the first eight innings to earn the win for the Spartans.

SUBJECT: Baseball Splits Home Opener with Bridgeport, Winning Game One 6-0 Before Falling, 3-2, in Nightcap

DATE: March 16, 2019
MKR

NEW CASTLE, Del. – In their home opener at Wilson Field, the Wilmington University baseball team split games with East Coast Conference contender, Bridgeport, winning the first contest, 6-0, but falling to the Purple Knights, 3-2, in the second game of the day on Saturday afternoon.

Game One:

The Wildcats (9-5) took advantage of Bridgeport’s nine errors throughout the game to secure their second shutout of the year with the help from starting pitcher Brad Scull, who went 8.0 innings, allowing three hits, no walks, and striking out 11.

Scull and the Wildcats had a one-two-three outing throughout the first four innings, before Scull gave up his first hit of the day in the top of the fifth inning. Redshirt junior Eddie Nevins was due up first for the Wildcats in the bottom half of the inning and hit a double into left center, before Brooks Ryan reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to allow Nevins to score. Ryan would advance to third on a wild pitch to then give Luke Johnson an opportunity. Johnson would hit a sacrifice fly out to center field to score Ryan and give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.

WilmU would start the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out for Kendall Small who singled through the right side, scoring Max Carney and Julian Kurych to make it a 4-0 game. Bridgeport was forced into a pitching change, but the Wildcats would load the bases again, now with two outs for Johnson, who reached on fielding error by the shortstop to score Max Carney, to take a 5-0 lead heading into the top of the eighth.

Scull would only allow one more hit in the eighth inning, before the Wildcats got another run in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a bases loaded fielder’s choice by Kendall Small to score Dan Hyatt and give WilmU the 6-0 lead. Redshirt senior Zachary Frederick would come in to close it out for the Wildcats in the top of the ninth inning, going 1-2-3 to complete the shutout.

Julian Kurych, Frank Nigro, and Dakota Graham all had a hit for the Wildcats, as Kendall Small had one hit and two RBI along with Luke Johnson who added one hit and one RBI. Scull improved to 4-0 on the year.

Game Two:

The bats were hard to find in the second game, as the Wildcats did not get their lone hit of the game until the bottom of the seventh inning, whereas the Purple Knights (2-12) had 10 throughout the contest.

The Wildcats would take the early lead in the bottom of the first inning off of pass ball and a steal home from Small and Nevins, but both runs would be the only ones scored for the Wildcats throughout the game.

Bridgeport’s bats came alive in the top of the third inning as their leadoff hitter doubled to right field, before scoring on a fielder’s choice to the second baseman. The Purple Knights would then tie it up on another double to left field, before Sean Deely got out of the inning with two straight outs. Bridgeport would then take their first lead of the day on a homerun out to right center to give them the go ahead run in the top of the fifth inning. The Wildcats would threaten in the bottom half of the inning, but would leave runners in scoring position.

Catcher Frank Nigro would give the Wildcats life in the final inning with the first hit of the day through the left side, before Quintin Ivy was walked to put two on for the Wildcats. With two outs though, WilmU would go down swinging to end the game, 3-2.

Sean Deely pitched 6.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and three runs, with nine strikeouts. Justin Mears went the final inning and allowed only one walk. Deely would fall to 1-2 on the season.

Next Up:

Wilmington is right back at it tomorrow, as they host Bridgeport for one game starting at 12:00 p.m. at Wilson Field.

Goldey-Beacom Baseball Falls to Delaware and No. 10 West Chester

Goldey-Beacom went against some of the best today in Division I Delaware and perennial Division II power West Chester, but fell to both in Newark, DE.

GBC opened with a 4-0 loss to Delaware before a 6-3 setback to 10th-ranked West Chester.

The Delaware contest saw GBC not take advantage of two strong pitching performances. Senior Jake Trejo (Wauseon, OH) was solid over six innings, allowing just four runs – three earned – and seven hits over six innings. Junior Brandon Ferrie (Royersford, PA) also gave the Lightning a chance, striking out three and yielding just one hit over two frames.

Junior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE/Sussex Tech) closed with two hits for Goldey-Beacom.

Chris Ludman went all the way for the Blue Hens in tossing a six-hit shutout, striking out six over nine innings with one walk and facing just six batters above the minimum. Kevin Buglio recorded a pair of run-scoring doubles and Jack Goan also had two hits for Delaware (3-14).

Goldey-Beacom in its game with West Chester opened the scoring in the last of the second. Junior Cole Collins (Laurel, DE/Sussex Tech) lined a leadoff single and scored when freshman Anthony DiMartino (Sicklerville, NJ) crushed an RBI double to right-center field.

The Golden Rams plated the next six runs for a 6-1 lead, keyed by a three-run sixth inning. Justin Horn lifted a sacrifice fly, Joey Coyle lined an RBI single and Joe Zirolli added a run-scoring single.

The Lightning (1-12) got two runs back in the last of the sixth for a 6-3 deficit. Collins lined a two-out double, took third on a wild pitch and DiMartino walked. Freshman Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) followed with a run-scoring single for his first collegiate RBI and sophomore Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE/Sussex Tech) then lined an RBI single.

DiMartino ended 3-for-3 with Collins and Hill getting two hits apiece. Senior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ) struck out seven over five innings, but yielded three runs and four hits.

Jon Fisher struck out three over five innings for West Chester (8-2), allowing one run and four hits. Evan Snyder fired a perfect ninth inning for the save, striking out two.

Goldey-Beacom and West Chester play again Sunday in Newark, beginning at 3:00 pm.

Norfolk, Va. (Mar. 17. 2019) --- Jonathan Mahoney pitched a six-hit shutout to lead Norfolk State to a 9-0 MEAC North victory over Delaware State in the finale of a three-game series at Marty Miller Field today.

The Spartans swept the series to improve to 7-10 overall and 3-0 in the MEAC. The Hornets dropped their fourth straight to fall to 5-11 and 0-3.

Norfolk State catcher Kam Holland was two-for-four with six runs batted in on a grand slam and two-run double to lead the Spartans’ 12-hit attack.

Catcher Adrian Hill has three singles in four at bats for the Hornets.

The Spartans opened the scoring with five runs in bottom of the second inning off Delaware State starter Jeremy Carrow. The first three batters in the inning reached base on two singles and a walk. Holland then launched a shot over the left field fence to clear the bases and put Norfolk State ahead 4-0. Norfolk State led 5-0 when Alsander Womack singled in a run with two outs in the inning.

Holland doubled in two more runs off Carrow in the third to push the Spartans’ lead to 7-0.

Norfolk State scored single runs in the fourth and eighth innings to round out the scoring.

Hill had singles in the third, sixth and eighth innings to raise his season average to .318.

Also, the Hornets turned a 4-3-5 triple play on a pop out to second by James Deloatch in the Norfolk State fifth. Brandon Crosby, who was on third base and Holland on first were also out on the play.

SUBJECT: Whiteside Shines in both Games as Wildcats Win Game One, 8-2, but Pace Takes Game Two In Nine Innings, 3-1

DATE: March 17, 2019
MKR

NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Wilmington University softball team took one game from Pace University in its doubleheader at Asbury Field, winning game one, 8-2, but falling in the second game in nine innings, 3-1 on St. Patrick’s Day.

Game One:

The Wildcats (10-5) came out swinging in game one from the start, as they had 10 hits and eight RBI to the Setters’ three hits.

WilmU started the bottom of the first inning with the first three batters reaching base on a bunt and error from the Setters. Lauren Lopez, who was in the cleanup spot, singled to left field, scoring Rosa’Lynn Burton to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. With the bases still loaded, Lexi Baughman hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to give the Wildcats their second run of the game and take an early 2-0 lead heading into the second inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Burton hit her second bunt single of the game, before Kiana Broderson-Jones was walked to bring up Alyssa Velasquez. Velasquez than tripled to left field to score both Burton and Broderson-Jones to bring Lopez up to the plate again. Lopez kept it going with a double over the left fielder’s head to score Velasquez and give WilmU a 5-0 lead.

The Setters would get two runs back in the top of the third inning, but freshman Kiersten Comer would make it a four run game in the bottom of the inning when she hit her first colligate career home run out to right field. The Wildcats wouldn’t get their last two runs until the bottom of the sixth inning when Burton started the inning off with her fourth single of the game. With runners in scoring position, Lauren Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Burton, before Annie Davila got into the action with her first hit of the game to right center to score Broderson-Jones and make it an 8-2 game in favor of the Wildcats.

Caitlyn Whiteside would retire the side in the top of the seventh for the Wildcats. She went 7.0 innings, allowing just three hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Rosa’Lynn Burton went 4-for-4 in the game with three runs and three stolen bases. She is now two hits away from tying the all-time career hits record leader, Cambria Ziemba (2013-16) who has 201.

Lauren Lopez went 3-for-4 with two hits and three RBI, as Alyssa Velasquez had one hit and two RBI for the Wildcats.

Game Two:

Caitlyn Whiteside was dominant on the mound in game two for the Wildcats as she went seven innings without a hit, but the Wildcats could not find the bats as they fell to the Setters, 3-1, in nine innings.

Whiteside pitched a 1-2-3 inning six out of the first seven innings. The Wildcats got their first hit of the game on a single to left field from Lexi Baughman, but their second and final hit of the game wouldn’t come until the bottom of the eighth inning from Courtney Dellinger, who doubled down the left field line to score Comer and tie the game up at one.

Pace would get runners in scoring position with only one out, and take their first lead of the game on an error by the Wildcats in the top of the ninth. Looking for a double play, the Wildcats got just that with a sacrifice fly hit out to center field, before they touched second base to get the runner who advanced to third out for leaving too early. The setters would still get a run from the sac fly, and take a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the ninth, though.

The Wildcats would have one last chance in the bottom half of the inning to tie things up or end the game on a walk off. Alyssa Velasquez would start the inning with a walk to put her and the ITB runner, Kiana Broderson-Jones on first and second, for Lauren Lopez to advance them on a sacrifice bunt. With the bases loaded now, the Wildcats were down to their final out, but could not come out on top as Pace would end the game with a strikeout.

Whiteside went 8.1 innings, allowing only two hits and one walk with five strikeouts. She is now 6-3 on the year. Lexi Baughman and Courtney Dellinger had both hits for the Wildcats, as Dellinger had one RBI.

Next Up:

The Wildcats are back at Asbury Field for the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup with Georgian Court on Tuesday afternoon. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 2:30 p.m.
