Dover, Del. (Mar. 19, 2019) --- The Delaware State softball team is home for the first time this season on Wednesday (Mar. 20). The Hornets will take on Fairfield in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the DSU softball complex on campus.

The Hornets hope that playing in front of their home fans will spark a change in fortunes for the team. DSU has lost seven straight and 13 of their last 14 games to stand at 2-14 this season.

Delaware State has been idle since competing in the HBCU Classic Tournament near Atlanta, Ga., on March 8-10.

Despite the slow start, some Hornets are putting up solid numbers this season.

Shortstop Jordan Casey (jr.) is second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in hitting with a .429 batting average (18-for-42), while second baseman Jasmine Melgoza (jr.) is eighth in the league with a .370 average (20-for-54).

Also, DSU freshman outfielder Jonah Cunnigan is batting .333 (16-for-48) to rank third on the team and 15th in the MEAC.

Melgoza, a Preseason All-MEAC First Team selection, was named MEAC Player-of-the-Week on Mar. 5 after collecting 10 hits in 17 at bats (.588), with a home run, two doubles and four scored in a five-game stretch, while Cunnigan was named MEAC Rookie-of-the-Week that day after batting .571 (8-for-14) with three stolen bases and four runs scored during that same five-day span. Fairfield was 11-3 this season heading into a Tuesday doubleheader at Villanova.

SUBJECT: Wildcats Win Game One with 3-2 Walk Off in the Ninth before Georgian Court Takes Game Two, 9-1, to Open Conference Play

DATE: March 19, 2019
MKR

NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Wilmington University softball team came away with one win in their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader, winning the first game 3-2 in nine innings, but losing the second, 9-1, in five innings against Georgian Court Tuesday afternoon at Asbury Field.

Game One:

It took until the bottom of the ninth inning for the Wildcats (11-6) to pull away with a 3-2 win over the Lions (18-5) on a sacrifice fly from freshman Kiersten Comer to score the go ahead run.

It was a slow start to the game, as the Wildcats were the first to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Rosa’Lynn Burton got the Wildcats started with a bunt single to the pitcher to give the Wildcats a baserunner. Kiana Broderson-Jones would follow right behind her as she was walked to bring up Lauren Lopez. Lopez singled to the second baseman to score Burton. On the next play, Lopez was picked off at first base, but Broderson-Jones was able to steal home before the final out was recorded to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning.

Through six innings, pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside only gave up two hits to the Lions. It wasn’t until with two outs in the top of the seventh that Georgian Court found some momentum to work with. The Lions would get a baserunner, before an error by the Wildcats would score the runner and make it a one run game. The next batter for the Lions singled to center field to bring home the tying run of the game, forcing extra innings.

Neither team would score in the eighth inning, to bring the intentional baserunner rule into place in the ninth inning. The Lions were able to bunt their runner over to third with only one out in the inning, but Whiteside was able to retire the next two batters on a strikeout and a pop up to get out of the inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Alyssa Velasquez would be the first batter for the Wildcats. She would lay a sacrifice bunt down to get Annie Davila over to third. Freshman Kiersten Comer would be the next batter, in which she got a ball just far enough into left field that Davila could tag up and score to give the Wildcats the walk off win.

The Wildcats finished with four hits in the game from Burton, Lopez (1H, 1RBI), Comer (1H, 1RBI), and Courtney Dellinger. Caitlyn Whiteside went 9.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs, one walk, and six strikeouts. Burton’s hit was the 200th of the junior’s career.

Game Two:

Although the Wildcats had more hits than the Lions in the first game and came out with the win, Georgian Court took advantage of the bats in the second game, scoring nine runs to force the eight-run rule in five innings.

GCU would get their first runs of the game in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run out to right field. Starting off the bottom of the first would be Burton who laid down a bunt to the pitcher, before Kiana Broderson-Jones moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Lauren Lopez would step up again for the Wildcats as she would double to right center to score Burton, and make it a 2-1 game. The Wildcats would get four more hits throughout the game, but the Lions would have a big third, fourth, and fifth inning, scoring seven unanswered runs to end the game, 9-1 after just five innings.

The Wildcats had six different players to get at least one hit in the contest, including another hit and RBI from Lopez. Rosa’Lynn Burton had two hits on the day to put her one hit away from tying the all-time record for career hits with 201.

Caitlyn Whiteside would go 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and five runs, before Lexi Baughman came in for the Wildcats, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and four runs, with one strikeout.

Next Up:

The Wildcats will end their eight-game home stand against Dominican on Saturday afternoon in another tough CACC matchup. First pitch of game one at Asbury Field is slated for 1:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: USciences Scores Late in CACC Doubleheader Sweep, 4-3 and 7-5, over #24 Wilmington Baseball

DATE: March 20, 2019
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Late scores by the USciences Devils ruined the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opening doubleheader for the Wilmington University baseball team, as the Wildcats fell, 4-3 and 7-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

A run in the top of the eighth proved to be the difference for the Devils (4-12, 2-0 CACC) in the opener before the visitors came back with five runs in the top of the seventh to steal a 7-5 victory in the nightcap form the Wildcats (10-7, 0-2 CACC).

Game One:

Trailing 1-0 after the top of the first, the Wildcats took a 2-1 lead with runs in the bottom of the first and second innings. Dakota Graham led off the inning with a double and Kendall Small grounded out to tie the game, 1-1. With two outs and a man on second, Julian Kurych doubled to the gap in left center to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.

The Wildcats left two runners on in the fourth and left two more on in the bottom of the fifth, opening the door for the Devils.

In the top of the sixth, a leadoff walk and a double quickly tied the game before a two-out, bases loaded walk gave the visitors the lead.

The Wildcats threatened again in the bottom of the sixth, but a strikeout left runners on second and third as the inning ended. The Wildcats put two runners with only one out in the seventh, but an inning ending double play erased the threat by the Wildcats.

The Devils were able to cash in on another cash in the top of the eighth, as they put their firs two runners on. It looked as the Wildcats would get out of the inning with a double play, but the Devils picked up a two-out RBI single for the 4-2 lead.

The Wildcats threatened again in the home half of the eighth, getting runners on second and third with only one out. Dakota Graham grounded out to score Luke Johnson, but that’s all the Wildcats would get as the Devils ended the inning with another ground out.

Wilmington put the tying run on base in the ninth, but another double play ended the game, 4-3.

Brett Nowell and Max Carney wach had two hits while Graham, Kendall Small, and Kurych all had an RBI. Tyler Campbell was saddled with the loss for the Wildcats.

Game Two:

It looked as though the Wildcats got over their game one loss quickly in the bottom of the first in game two. Wilmington started with three runs in the frame, taking control of the contest.

After Dakota Graham walked to start the inning, Quintin Ivy chased him around with an RBI double. Eddie Nevins followed with an RBI double of his own, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Brock Nowell hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Nevins for the early 3-0 lead.

The Devils cut into the deficit in the top of the third, starting with a leadoff walk, a triple, and a sacrifice fly in the first three batters to get to within 3-2.

Sean Deely had the third straight hit to start the bottom of the fifth, bringing in Ivy form third before Mitchell Leslie singled in Derek Donastorg with two outs to give the Wildcats a 5-2 lead.

Justin Mears shut the Devils down in the top of the sixth, but ran into trouble in the top of the seventh.

A triple started the inning before an RBI single set the inning in motion. With runners on first and third, another single brought the Devils to within 5-4. A grounder back to the pitcher looked like a double play, but the throw was dropped at second, allowing the tying run to cross the plate.

Now with two outs, the Devils came up with a bloop single to right, scoring two more runs to take a 7-5 lead.

Derek Donastorg doubled to start the bottom of the seventh and Brock Nowell walked to start a rally. Pinch hitter Kendall Small singled, but got caught on the base paths for the first out. A strikeout left the Wildcats with their final out, but pinch hitter Luke Johnson flew out to right to end the game.

Quintin Ivy and Eddie Nevins each finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Ivy had two doubles while Nevins had one double. Justin Mears was saddled with the loss in game two.

Up Next:

The Wildcats will take another crack at the Devils in their next contest, as the new CACC schedule has South Division opponents play four times in the same week. The Wildcats head to Philadelphia to take on USciences in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

Zach Roseman’s School-Record Five Hits Helps Goldey-Beacom Baseball Gain Doubleheader Split at Jefferson

Junior Zach Roseman (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall) collected a school-record five hits in game two, helping propel Goldey-Beacom to an 18-10 victory over Jefferson after opening the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with an 8-2 setback in Philadelphia, PA.

Roseman ended with two doubles and three singles to break the team mark of four hits accomplished by numerous players. The 18 runs and 20 hits for Goldey-Beacom each are one off team records, both accomplished against Caldwell on March 26, 2018.

Junior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE/Sussex Tech) in game two blasted a leadoff homer before the Lightning then got seven runs in the top of the second for a 9-1 lead. Hill and Roseman had RBI singles sandwiched around run-scoring doubles from freshman Maurice Parson (Philadelphia, PA) and senior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ).

If that was not enough, the Lightning in the fourth inning put up another seven spot for a 16-3 lead. Freshman Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) launched a solo homer, Roseman had an infield RBI single, freshman Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE/Conrad) drew a bases-loaded walk and Hill ripped a two-run double.

Sophomore Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE/DMA) lined an RBI double in the sixth and Awtry added a solo homer in the sixth for an 18-3 margin. The Rams got six runs back in the sixth, aided by Efrain Santiago’s three-run double, for an 18-9 contest.

Hill ended with three hits and four RBI with Parson and Gillis also getting three hits. Junior starter Brandon Ferrie (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) allowed three runs and six hits over three innings for the Lightning (2-14, 1-1 CACC) before Wauseon, OH senior Jake Trejo (1-2) struck out one and permitted just one hit over an inning.

Santiago went 2-for-2 with four RBI and Timothy Brodhag also collected two hits for Jefferson (3-13, 1-1).

Goldey-Beacom in game one permitted four runs in the last of the fourth inning and found itself in a 6-0 hole. Santiago scored on an error, Brodhag lined a two-run double and Matt McGee added an RBI single.

Down 8-0, the Lightning plated two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Parson ripped an RBI triple and Abdul followed with a run-scoring single.

Abdul and Hill closed with two hits apiece for the Lightning.

Patrick Hohlfield (1-2) struck out 15 over eight innings for the Rams, allowing just two runs, seven hits and one walk. Broadhag had two hits and three RBI.

Under the new CACC scheduling format, two teams in the same division are scheduled to meet four times in the same week. Goldey-Beacom on Friday hosts Jefferson at noon at Doyle Field in Hockessin.

HORNETS SWEEP TWIN-BILL FOR SERIES WIN
Dover, Del. (Mar. 24, 2019) --- The Delaware State softball team posted two walk-off wins to sweep Coppin State in a MEAC North doubleheader today. The Hornets won two of the three games in the opening division series for each team.

DSU won the first game 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and took the nightcap 3-2 in 10 innings.

In the opener, Hornet catcher Jaelyn Baker singled in the game-winning run in the last of the seventh inning. Jasmine Melgoza doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jade King. After a walk to Jordan Casey, Baker lined a shot to the fence in left field to score Melgoza with the winning run.

The Hornets opened the game one scoring with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. DSU scored the first two runs on a Coppin State error and third run crossed the plate when Casey scored on a double steal with King.

The Eagles tied the game with three runs in the top of the fourth. The big blow in the inning was a two-run homer by Milford (Del.) High School product Nia Bowe to tie the score.

Brianna Baker (2-9) was the winning pitcher in the opener for the Hornets. Baker allowed three runs and eight hits, while striking out two without a walk in the complete game performance.

Melgoza had two of the Hornets’ six hits in the opener.

In the nightcap, winning pitcher Tiffany Diao scored Sabrina Quarles on a sacrifice fly with none out in the 10th inning for the winning run.

Under extra inning rules, Quarles was placed on second base to start the inning. She moved to third when Coppin State first baseman Kayla Brown committed an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by DSU’s Alexis Roberson. Diao followed with a fly ball to right field, with Quarles sprinting home after the catch.

Delaware State opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first on a sac fly by Casey and run-scoring single by Jaelyn Baker.

Coppin State tied the game after scoring single runs in the second and fifth innings.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Baseball Drops the Opener, 4-3, But Splits With Chestnut Hill, 3-2, in CACC Play

DATE: March 26, 2019
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Chestnut Hill on Tuesday, dropping the first game, 4-3, before walking-off with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap at Wilson Field.

Game One:

The opener was a difference of which team could come up with the two-out hit, as the Wildcats (15-8, 5-3 CACC) left a runner on third in the first and second innings. The Griffins capitalized with a two-out RBI single in the third and another two-out RBI double in the fourth to take an early 2-0 lead.

A pair of unearned runs came back to haunt the Wildcats in the top of the seventh, as the Griffins were able to extend their lead out to 4-0. What looked to be an inning ending double play on a grounder to second, the throw to first was off the mark and allowed the Griffins to score a run and keep the inning alive. Two batters later, a low throw from third couldn’t be hung on to at first, scoring another run for the 4-0 lead.

The Wildcats would end up scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the second, cutting the deficit in half. The first three batters reached for the Wildcats, with Dakota Graham singling in Frank Nigro, but Graham was caught at second trying to stretch the single into left center into a double. Max Carney then hit a two-out RBI single to score Hyatt, but the Griffins escaped without further damage.

Frank Nigro started the ninth with a double, and was standing on third base with one out. But the Wildcats could only get one run in the inning on a sacrifice fly, as a fly ball to center ended the game, 4-3.

Kyle Maxwell went the first six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out two batters while allowing two hits. Mike Cottrell was victim of the two unearned runs in the seventh before Danny Sullivan threw two scoreless frames with two strikeouts.

Luke Johnson went 2-for-4 with a double for the Wildcats while Dakota Graham led the team with two RBI. Frank Nigro also had a double and two runs in a 1-for-3 day.

Game Two:

The Griffins used two more unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but then were shutdown the rest of the way by starter Noah Latshaw.

After getting the first two outs in the top of the first, an error sparked a two-run rally. With runners on first and third, a double over the head of the left fielder chased both runs home.

The Wildcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning, but the Griffins escaped with a strikeout. The Wildcats then left two more on in the bottom of the third, before finally striking in the fifth.

Quintin Ivy started the fifth with a single before Brett Nowell walked to put two on with no outs. Eddie Nevins put a bunt down the third base line, and a errant throw brought in a run and put runners on second and third. Kendall Small tied the game with an RBI groundout in the next at-bat.

The Griffins put a rally together in the sixth, and was sending a runner home with two outs. But the relay between Julian Kurych, Kendall Small, and Frank Nigro gunned down the runner to keep it tied at 2-2.

Ivy started the rally in the bottom of the seventh with another leadoff single to right. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position before an intentional walk put runners on first and second.

Kendall Small bounced one to second, but the throw to second was off the mark and traveled into left field. Ivy came home for the walk-off run, 3-2.

Latshaw went six full with two strikeouts and one walk. He allowed two unearned runs on four hits in the no decision. Zach Frederick came on and pitched the seventh, evening his record to 1-1 on the year.

Up Next:

The Wildcats head to West Chester University for a nonconference game on Wednesday, playing in the Bill Giles Invitational First Round. The winner of the game tomorrow advances to play USciences in the championship at Citizens Bank Park at a later date. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University softball team picked up an impressive nonconference sweep over PSAC foe West Chester, winning the opener, 9-8, in 10 innings before earning the sweep with a 7-3 game two victory on Tuesday afternoon at Asbury Field.

Game One:

The Wildcats (13-8) needed to come from behind three different times just to force extra innings in the opener, and Angela Antonini capped it with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th.

Trailing 2-0 in the second inning, Rosa’Lynn Burton had one of her five hits in the game for a two-run single before Kiana Broderson-Jones tripled in Burton. Broderson-Jones then scored on an error later in the inning, giving the Wildcats a 4-2 lead.

The Golden Rams (19-12) scored three times in the third and one more in the fourth before taking a 7-5 lead in the top of the sixth.

But the Wildcats fought back in the bottom of the sixth, as Broderson-Jones doubled in Burton for the first run of the inning. A fly ball couldn’t be fielded in right on a ball by Lauren Lopez, bringing Broderson-Jones in to tie the game, 7-7.

A sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh gave the visitors an 8-7 lead, but then Burton came up with a big two-out RBI single in the home half, extending the game into extra innings.

The Wildcats turned double plays in the eighth and ninth innings to keep the Golden Rams off the board. In the bottom of the tenth and the international tiebreaker in effect, the Wildcats had runners on second and third and only one out. Angela Antonini then singled back up the middle to score Courtney Dellinger for the walk-off win, 9-8.

Burton batted 5-for-6 with three RBI, three stolen bases, and two runs scored. Kiana Broderson-Jones batted 3-for-6 with a double and a triple, two RBI, and three runs scored. Lauren Lopez went 2-for-5 with an RBI while Jazmeen Llamas scored two runs.

Caitlyn Whiteside went all 10 innings, allowing eight runs (three earned) on 10 hits while picking up five strikeouts. She is now 8-6 on the year.

Game Two:

In the nightcap, it was a seven-run inning bottom of the fifth that set the Wildcats apart for the nonconference sweep.

Trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth, the Wildcats loaded the bases without recording an out. Rosa’Lynn Burton singled off the pitcher and into no-mans land in the infield, brining in the first two runs. Broderson-Jones then lined one into left center for another two-run single and the 4-1 lead.

The Wildcats reloaded the bases with one out and Angela Antonini forced in a run with a walk. An error brought in another run before Courtney Dellinger forced in the final run of the inning for the 7-1 advantage.

Lexi Baughman was able to work around three hits and two errors in the top of the seventh to secure her first victory of the year. She came on in the top of the fifth and tossed three innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits.

Rosa’Lyn Burton went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Lauren Lopez and Kiersten Comer added two hits each as well.

Up Next:

The Wildcats are back in action on Wednesday as they return to CACC play at Holy Family. The first pitch of the doubleheader starts at 2:00 p.m.

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware posted a 6-1 win over Saint Joseph’s in the opener before dropping a 3-1 decision in the nightcap as the Blue Hens split a non-conference doubleheader with Saint Joseph’s Wednesday afternoon.

Delaware (12-16) took the lead during the opener in the bottom of the second when Anna Steinmetz led off with a single and scored on a double by Brittney Mendoza. After Ali Davis drove home Steinmetz with a sacrifice fly, Chayanna Gallardo doubled and crossed the plate on a Miranda O’Donald single to give the Blue Hens a three-run advantage.

Mendoza then blasted a home run to leftcenter in the bottom of the fourth, before the Hawks (13-12) got on the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Sarah Ostaszewski.

Steinmetz belted a homer to centerfield in the bottom of the sixth, and after Mendoza tripled, she scored on an infield single by Davis to close the scoring.

Blue Hen starter Maddi Marsh earned her third win of the year after allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work, while Katie Stahre picked up her first career save with two scoreless frames of relief.

Wed, March 27, 2019
Dover, Del. (Mar. 27, 2019) – Delaware State’s Kevin Larkin has been selected to participate in the 2019 Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship, scheduled for April 5-7 at Minnesota’s Mall of America. Larkin is one of four players selected from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference selected to compete in the event.

The tournament is comprised of all-star teams of seniors, who have exhausted their collegiate eligibility, representing all 32 Division I conferences. The teams will compete for a $150,000 prize pool, with the champions taking home $100,000, double the prize money from a year ago. Additionally, the winners will earn the right to compete in the 2019 USA Basketball 3x3 Open National Championship later this spring.

Larkin, a 2018-19 All-MEAC Third Team selection, was tops on the Hornets and fourth in the MEAC in scoring at 16.0 points per game, and was third in the league in rebounding at 8.9 per game. In addition, he was tied for second in the conference with 11 “double-doubles” this past season.

On Dec. 3, 2018 vs. Cairn, Larkin scored a career-high 40 points, the top single-game total in the MEAC this season. He also had 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals to lead the Hornets to a 102-66 victory in that contest.

Larkin reached double-figures in scoring in 20 of the 24 games in which he competed, topping the 20-point mark five times.

His season was also highlighted by the game-winning basket with 3.4 seconds left to play in the Hornets’ 73-71 victory at Delaware on Dec. 19.

A native of Georgetown, Del., and product of Sussex Tech High School, Larkin attended Cheyney University (Pa.) and Niagara (N.Y.) before returning to the First State to attend DSU and compete for the Hornets this season.

Larkin is the second Hornet selected to compete in the national 3x3 tournament in its two years.

DSU Artem Tavakalyan was a member of the MEAC squad that reached the final four of the 2018 tournament in San Antonio, Tex.

All games of the 2019 Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship will be carried live on Twitter or ESPN2. Pool play will begin at 3 p.m. ET on April 5, with 24 games streamed live exclusively on Twitter. Pool play will continue on April 6 at 9:30 a.m. ET with 24 more games streamed live exclusively on Twitter. Round of 16 and quarterfinal games will be streamed live exclusively on Twitter at 10:30 a.m. ET on April 7, with semifinal, consolation and championship games televised live on ESPN2 later that day at 3 p.m. ET. Returning to call all the action throughout the tournament will be the voice of FIBA 3x3 basketball, Kyle Montgomery, with Robbie Hummel of ESPN and Tate Frazier and Mark Titus of The Ringer’s One Shining Podcast providing color commentary and sideline coverage.

“The attention from the inaugural Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship last year has really elevated the anticipation for this year’s event at Mall of America,” said Drew Russell, executive vice president at Intersport, the Chicago-based agency which operates the event. “We are incredibly excited about the field of players that will be competing in the event and believe the talent that will be on display will create an unforgettable atmosphere for everyone involved. Additionally, we’re confident these players are going to enjoy a one of a kind experience that will help position them for the next steps in their basketball careers.”

Each team roster will be comprised of four eligible seniors from the same Division I conference. Teams will be organized into eight pools of four and each team will be guaranteed three pool play games, earning $1,000 for every victory on Friday and Saturday. The top two teams in each pool will move on to Sunday’s knockout stage, where the stakes skyrocket. Only the teams competing in the tournament final will earn additional prize money, with the champions winning $100,000.

The setting for the second annual Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship will be unlike anything the 128 players have seen when they take to the half-court inside Mall of America, the most popular tourist destination in Minnesota with more than 40 million visitors each year. The Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship will be staged in the Rotunda at the Mall, which hosted the first WCW Monday Nitro in September 1995, and will be just the second live sporting event to be broadcast in the Mall’s history.

Bragging rights for the winners won’t end in Minnesota; the 2019 champion will earn the right to represent the Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship at the USA Basketball 3x3 Open National Championship later this spring. There, athletes will have the opportunity to be selected to represent the United States in the 2019 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, held June 18-23 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Participating athletes will also be considered for the USA Basketball 3x3 athlete pool, which may lead to future opportunities in other FIBA 3x3 competitions. SUBJECT: Wildcats Cruise to 18-4 Win Over No. 18 West Chester In First Round of the Bill Giles Invitational

DATE: March 27, 2019
MKR

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – In the first round of the Bill Giles Invitational, the No. 22 Wilmington University baseball team defeated No. 18 West Chester, 18-4, at Serpico Field on Wednesday afternoon to advance to the Bill Giles Invitational Championship.

With the win over the Rams, the Wildcats advance to the Bill Giles Invitational Championship at Citizens Bank Park in April, where they will face USciences. WilmU won the tournament last year, and look to repeat for the first time in program history. No date has been set yet. USciences defeated Jefferson in the other First Round contest.

A big fourth and sixth inning and a total of 18 hits for the Wildcats (16-8) would help them jump out to a big lead over the Rams (12-5) in a rematch of last year’s Bill Giles Championship.

There was no action until the third inning for the Wildcats, as Julian Kurych started the inning off with a double to right field. With Kurych in scoring position, Dakota Graham would put down a safety squeeze to the pitcher to score Kurych and give WilmU a 1-0 lead.

With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning, Kurych hit a single to right field to score the first two runs of the inning for the Wildcats. Brooks Ryan would be the next to single to the shortstop to bring home Kurych, before Eddie Nevins watched four pitchers go by for a bases loaded walk. The Rams would be on their third pitcher of the inning, before Kendall Small gave the Wildcats their sixth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left field and head into the bottom half of the inning with a 7-0 lead.

With the bases loaded again to start the top of the sixth inning, Max Carney singled to right field scoring two runs, before Luke Johnson hit a single to center scoring another for WilmU. Joey Cautillo would get into the action with a two-out single to center field to score Carney and extend Wilmington’s lead to 13-0.

West Chester would break the shutout for the Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh inning as they got their first run of the game. The bats would keep rolling for the Wildcats though, as they would get four more hits in the bottom of the eighth. Senior Luke Johnson would hit his fifth homerun of the year out to left field, before Julian Kurych would follow him with a two-run shot to right field to give himself his fourth hit and fourth RBI of the game.

Kurych would go 4-for-5 in the ballgame with four RBI and four runs, while Luke Johnson went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three hits. Max Carney had two hits and two RBI, as Dakota Graham had two hits and one RBI for the Wildcats. The Wildcats had 11 players with at least one hit in the win.

Wilmington would have nine pitchers throughout the game, changing every inning. Rudy Gervolino would get the start for the Wildcats and strikeout two, while Sean Deely would strikeout two and get the win for the Wildcats to improve to 3-2 on the year. Freshman Rich Albrecht would strikeout out three for WilmU.

The Wildcats are back on the road Friday when they travel to Chestnut Hill for a CACC doubleheader. Game one is slated for 12:00 p.m.

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – The Wilmington University softball team won their third straight doubleheader Saturday afternoon as they swept Bloomfield, 4-1 and 3-2, to win their sixth straight game in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup at Shannon D. Forde Field.

Game One:

A three-run fifth inning for the Wildcats (17-8, 5-1 CACC) helped them secure the 4-1 win over the Bears in game one of their doubleheader.

Bloomfield would get the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning with two runners on with no outs on a single to third base to take an early 1-0 lead.

It wasn’t until the top of the fifth inning, though, that the Wildcats got on the board thanks to a single to left field from Kiana Broderson-Jones to score Rosa’Lynn Burton from second. Lauren Lopez would be the next batter and would hit her first triple of the season to right field scoring Broderson-Jones. Makayla McCarthy would then follow up with a single to right field to score Lopez and give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom half of the fifth.

WilmU would get one more in the top of the seventh as Rosa’Lynn Burton started the inning off with a double to left field for Lopez to hit a sacrifice fly out to center field two batters later to score Burton for the insurance run heading into the Bears’ final at bats.

Game Two:

With a tied game heading into the top of the seventh inning, Lauren Lopez hit her 10th double of the season to give the Wildcats the go-ahead run, before taking the contest from Bloomfield, 3-2.

The Bears would score the first run of the game again in the bottom of the first inning on a bases loaded wild pitch to take the early 1-0 lead. Alyssa Velasquez would start the top of the second inning off with a single up the middle, before she could get in scoring position on a wild pitch. Velasquez would then steal third and score on an error by the second baseman to tie the game up at 1-1.

WilmU would threaten in the top of the fifth inning on a single to right field from Rosa’Lynn Burton, but Courtney Dellinger was thrown out at home on the play. The Bears would get two runners on in the bottom half of the inning and hit a single up the middle to take the lead back from the Wildcats, making it a 2-1 game. Caitlyn Whiteside would get the next two batters and end the inning stranding three runners left on base.

Kiana Broderson-Jones started the top of the sixth inning off for the Wildcats with a single to second base, before Lopez could slip one through the left side and advance both her and Broderson-Jones on a Bears’ error. With no outs, Angela Antonini would reach first on another error from the Bears to score Borderon-Jones and tie the game at two apiece. WilmU would leave the bases loaded as Bloomfield made three straight outs to end the inning.

In their final at bats, Alexis Sann would walk to start the inning, but Bloomfield would strikeout the next two batters to bring the Wildcats down to their final out. Lauren Lopez would step up to the plate and hit a double to right field, scoring Sann and give the Wildcats the go-ahead run, making it a 3-2 game heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Goldey-Beacom Baseball Drops a Pair to Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom could not hold off a late lead in game one and could not quite rally from an early deficit in game two for a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference losses, 4-3 and 6-4, at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

GBC in the third inning brought game one to a 1-1 tie when junior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) singled through the left side to plate senior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ). It took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when an error on a steal attempt allowed sophomore Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE) to score from third.

Abdul’s RBI groundout in the sixth plated freshman Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) for what looked to be a huge insurance run, making it 4-3.

But the Cougars hastily scored three times in the seventh for a 4-3 margin. A throwing error allowed two runs to score for the tie and Luis Rullan lined an RBI single to center field, scoring Dhillon Barbetti, for the lead.

Abdul had three hits with Solis continuing his solid play by getting two.

Rullan rapped three hits for the Cougars with Barbetti and Kyle Richards getting two apiece. Jerry Gamone (1-4) allowed just three runs – one earned – and seven hits over six innings before Anthony Frascati struck out six over three scoreless frames for his first save of the year.

Caldwell (7-13, 5-7 CACC) in the first inning of game one exploded for five runs. Anthony Parente, Tavis Bruson and Jack Zosulis each had RBI before Jalen March ripped a two-run double.

Solis lined an RBI single in the last of the frame for a 5-1 deficit. GBC (4-22, 3-9) then got two runs in the third with Abdul recording an RBI grounder and junior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) crossing home on a balk for a 5-3 margin.

Zosulis lined an RBI single in the sixth for a 6-3 contest and Lightning freshman Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh for the final.

Solis ended with two hits and now has reached base in 13 straight contests. Hill also finished with two hits.

Parente and March each had two hits for the Cougars. Frank Lehmann (2-1) threw the final 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing just a run and two hits with a strikeout.

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday hosts 22nd-ranked Wilmington (DE) for a noon doubleheader at Doyle Field.

Goldey-Beacom Softball Handed a Pair of Setbacks at Dominican (NY)

Goldey-Beacom did not leave upstate New York with the results as planned with a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference setbacks, 7-3 and 7-0, at Dominican (NY) in Orangeburg, NY.

The Lightning in the fourth inning of game one moved to a 3-3 tie. Freshman Braydee Whitman (Dagsboro, DE) drove home a run on a fielder’s choice and sophomore Ali Henriquez (Hoboken, NJ) continued her strong play with a two-run double, plating Whitman and junior Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, MD).

But the Chargers took the lead for good with three runs in the last of the fourth. Rajene Bowe lined a two-run triple to right field and then crossed home on an error for a 6-3 contest.

Alyssa Siess launched a one-out homer in the fifth for the final.

Henriquez and Goshorn had two hits apiece for the Lightning (6-14, 4-6 CACC).

Emily Luzetsky batted 4-for-4 with Rowe, Samantha Fitzgerald and Madison Newman getting two hits apiece for the Chargers. Madeline Uschock struck out six over seven innings, yielding three runs and four hits.

Dominican in game two plated all of its runs in the second inning. Bowe continued her onslaught with a two-run single in addition to Luzetsky lining an RBI single.

Shelby Smith (2-2) was great for the Chargers (8-11, 5-1) in tossing a one-hit shutout, striking out two over seven innings. Bowe and Luzetsky notched two hits apiece.

Goldey-Beacom next Tuesday hosts the University of the Sciences for a doubleheader at the Jackson Complex, beginning at 2:30 pm.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Delaware rallied for eight runs in the sixth inning to post an impressive comeback victory over Hofstra as the Blue Hens and Pride split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.

Hofstra countered by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a two-run single by Imani Myint and a two-run double by Kasey Collins, before the Blue Hens responded with an eight-spot in the sixth.

Steinmetz opened the rally by hitting her team-leading sixth home run of the season, while Sarah Bessel doubled home Gallardo to make it a 5-4 game. After Miranda O’Donald legged out a bunt single to load the bases, Garber walked and Kisamore was hit by a pitch to put Delaware in front.

One out later Steinmetz walked to force in another run, before Brooke Glanden capped the rally with a bases-clearing double to left.

Hofstra answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame, but Kisamore gave Delaware an insurance run with an RBI groundout in the top of the seventh. Tue, April 02, 2019
Dover, Del. (Apr. 2, 2019) --- The Delaware State Equestrian Team has again qualified for national post-season championship competition. The Hornets have been selected to compete against the nation’s best in the 2019 National Collegiate Equestrian Association Event Championships Apr. 17-20 in Waco, Tex.

Under the NCEA tournament format devised last year, event championships are added, allowing schools to vie for national titles in Hunter Seat Equitation over Fences and Equitation on the Flat, in addition to Western Horsemanship and Reining.

Delaware State will compete in each of the four events.

The Hornets are seeded ninth in the Fences national championship field, its best seeding in the four events. DSU is No. 10 in the Reining field, 10th in Horsemanship and 13th on the Flat.

The Delaware State Fences team, led by 2018-19 All-United Equestrian Conference First Team selection Gabrielle Fournier, will face No. 8 Sweet Briar in the national championship opening round. The Hornets will try to avenge a 4-1 Fences loss to Sweet Briar when the teams met last October, with Zoe Kirsch capturing the lone win for the Hornets.

The Hornet Horsemanship team will battle No. 7 Texas Christian in the tournament’s first round. TCU was a 3-2 winner in Horsemanship when the teams met earlier this season.

Delaware State will face No. 7 Tennessee Martin, also a member of the United Equestrian Conference, in the opening round of the national Reining championships. Amber Van Segbrook was DSU’s lone winner in Reining vs. UT Martin in the regular season match-up between the teams.

The Hornets’ Flat team will battle No. 4 SMU in the opening round of the national tournament. Delaware State edged the Mustangs 2-1 on the Flat when the teams met in the regular season.

The top eight programs in the country will also vie for the 2019 overall team championship. The Hornets were not selected for the national team championship field, which has been reduced to eight schools from 12 in the past.

Delaware State posted its first-ever post-season victory with a win over South Dakota State in the 2018 NCEA Flat championships. The Hornets fell to Oklahoma State in the Flat semifinals last season.

DATE: April 2, 2019
MKR

NEW CASTLE, Del. – It took to the bottom of the eighth inning in the first game for the Wilmington University softball team to defeat Jefferson, 3-2, on a walk-off, but then Makayla McCarthy threw a five-inning no-hitter in the 16-0 second game at Asbury Field on Tuesday afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup.

Game One:

Down to their final at bats in the bottom of the seventh inning, Annie Davila hit a homerun to tie the ballgame at 2-2 to send it into extra innings, before Wilmington could take the win in the bottom of the eighth on two Jefferson errors.

The Wildcats (19-9, 7-2 CACC) saw themselves down for most of the game as the Rams (10-16, 5-7 CACC) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. It wasn’t until the bottom half of the inning that Makayla McCarthy sparked a rally as she was hit by a pitch to start the inning. With two outs, Courtney Dellinger was able to hit a double into left field to score pinch runner Alexi Sann and get the Wildcats on the board.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kiana Broderson-Jones gave the Wildcats some momentum with one out as she tripled to left field, but the Wildcats couldn’t bring her home and would strand her on third.

Down 2-1, with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, junior Annie Davila came up big for the Wildcats as she homered to left field to tie the ball game up at 2-2 and force extra innings.

Pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside would retire the side in order in the top of the eighth and bring the Wildcats to bat. Jazmeen Llamas would start the inning with a walk to bring the top of the lineup and Rosa’Lynn Burton up. Burton would lay down a sacrifice bunt to third base, but reach on a throwing error, advancing both her and Llamas. The Rams’ right fielder’s throw into the infield then got away from the catcher for Llamas to score and give the Wildcats the walk-off win.

Caitlyn Whiteside would throw a complete game, going 8.0 IP, allowing four hits, two runs and two strikeouts. Burton, Kiana-Borderson-Jones, Annie Davila (1 RBI), and Courtney Dellinger would all have hits for the Wildcats.

Jefferson’s Stephanie Pepper would strike out 11 batters and hit a solo homer for the Rams.

Game Two:

After the come from behind win, the Wildcats had momentum on their side, as they got out to a fast start in game two, scoring seven runs in the first two innings.

Annie Davila would bring in the first two runs as she singled to right field to start the Wildcats 16-hit game in the bottom of the first.

The hits kept coming in the next three innings for the Wildcats, as Alexis Sann, Kiana Broderson-Jones, Alyssa Velasquez, and Lauren Lopez all brought home runs in the bottom of the second to give them a 7-0 lead.

Sann would start the scoring in the bottom of the third inning for WilmU with a double, before Rosa’Lynn Burton followed her up with a triple to left field. Kiana Broderson-Jones would them single up the middle to score Burton and give the Wildcats a 10-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth.

The Wildcats were still not finished, as the first three batters in the bottom of the fourth inning got on for Wilmington to bring up Rosa’Lynn Burton. Burton would single up the middle to score one and keep the bases loaded for Broderson-Jones. Kiana Broderson-Jones would then connect for the fifth consecutive hit for the Wildcats, sending a ball over the left center fence for a grand slam to give the Wildcats a 15-0 lead.

Kiersten Comer would also get into the mix, reaching on a fielder’s choice to score Alyssa Velasquez and give WilmU their 16th run of the game heading into the top of the fifth inning.

Sophomore Makayla McCarthy would be dominant on the mound for the Wildcats, as she retired the first six batters of the game in order. The only inning she allowed a person on base was in the top of the third, but other than that, McCarthy struck out the side in the top of the fifth inning to give herself the no hitter in the contest. She would go 5.0 IP, allowing no hits, no runs, one walk, hit one batter, and had nine strikeouts.

Alexis Sann went 3-for-3 with two RBI, as Rosa’Lynn Burton went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kiana Broderson-Jones finished with two hits, one run, and six RBI. Lauren Lopez and Annie Davila each had two RBI for Wilmington.

In game one, the Wildcats’ (19-13, 8-8 CACC) Kendall Small (Dover, Del./Dover) broke the program’s all-time hits record, collecting his 197th career hit to surpass Mike Godwin and Jordan Oncay’s mark of 196 set from 2009-12.

Max Carney walked and stole second in the top of the second with only one out, but a line out and a strikeout left the senior on second to end the frame.
