MKR

WATERBURY, Conn. – Two runs in the bottom of the sixth gave South Division No. 2 seeded Wilmington University baseball a 2-1 lead over South Division No. 4 Jefferson, which would be enough to take game one of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury, Connecticut.

With the win, the Wildcats will play North Division No. 2 seeded Dominican tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m.

The Wildcats (36-12) and Rams were quiet in the firsts three innings of the ballgame as neither team would get a hit until the fourth. It was a pitcher’s dual for the most part throughout those innings, until Jefferson started the top of the fifth with a leadoff single. With only one out and a runner on first and third, the Rams were able to hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the game and take a 1-0 heading into the bottom half of the fifth.

Wilmington would go down in order in the inning, but a quick inning in the top of the sixth, including a double play, would send the Wildcats back to bat in the bottom of the sixth.

Dan Hyatt would get the inning started for WilmU on a dropped fly from the left fielder to reach first to lead off the inning. Kendall Small would lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance Hyatt to second. CACC Player of the Year Eddie Nevins would be the next batter for the Wildcats and draw a one out walk, as Dan Hyatt would advance to third on a wild pitch.

Luke Johnson would do his job and bring home Hyatt on a sacrifice fly out to right to tie the game up at 1-1 and advance Nevins to second. Max Carney then hit an RBI-single to right to score Nevins and give WilmU the 2-1 lead to end the inning trying to stretch a double on the play.

Kyle Maxwell would relieve Scull in the top of the seventh and get out of a jam, leaving runners on first and second. Zach Frederick and Dan Hyatt would pitch the final two innings, as Frederick got the Rams to groundout into a double play in the top of the eighth, before Hyatt was able to get a strikeout and fly out to end the ballgame, stranding a runner on second to get the save.

Brad Scull went 6.0 IP, allowing three hits, one earned run, and three walks, while striking out four batters. Maxwell, Frederick, and Hyatt would all strikeout one batter in each inning they pitched.

Eddie Nevins went 1-for-2 for the Wildcats with two walks, as Dan Hyatt, Luke Johnson, Max Carney, and Brett Nowell each went 1-for-3 in the ballgame. Johnson and Carney both had one RBI.

SUBJECT: Wildcats Defeat North Division No. 2 Dominican, 5-3, to Advance to CACC Championship Game

DATE: May 10, 2019
MKR

WATERBURY, Conn. – Down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, South Division No. 2 seeded Wilmington University baseball’s Luke Johnson hit a three-run home run to give the Wildcats a 5-3 lead over North Division No. 2 seeded Dominican to help advance Wilmington to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon in Waterbury, Connecticut.

The Wildcats (37-16) got the first inning started thanks to a hit by pitch to put leadoff hitter Dakota Graham on. Kendall Small and Eddie Nevins would both advance Graham, putting him in scoring position for Luke Johnson. Johnson would hit a two-out RBI single through the right side to score Graham and give WilmU a 1-0 lead over the Chargers. Max Carney would load the bases for WilmU, but the Wildcats would leave the bases loaded to end the inning.

Dominican tied the ballgame at one apiece in the top of the third on an error at home plate from the Wildcats, which was argued and eventually caused the ejection of head coach Brian August.

Kendall Small would start things in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff single, before the next two batters would advance Small to third with two outs. Small would then give the Wildcats back the one-run lead on a wild pitch after five full.

The Chargers wouldn’t get things going until the top of the seventh with a triple to tie the ballgame at 2-2. With one out and a pitching change for the Wildcats, the Chargers would score the runner from third on a single down the right field line to give Dominican their first lead of the game, making it 3-2. Pitcher Justin Mears would let up double, but then get two straight outs to strand the runners at second and third to head into the Wildcats at bats.

With one out, Kendall Small gave WilmU some momentum with a double down the left field line, before the Chargers intentionally walked Eddie Nevins to put two on and bring up CACC home run and RBI leader Luke Johnson. Johnson would take advantage of the decision, as he hit his 12th homerun of the season out to left field to give Wilmington a 5-3 lead heading into the eighth.

Dominican looked to get the two runs back in the top of the eighth, as they put runners on first and second with one out, but Zach Frederick would get them to groundout into a double play to end the Chargers’ chances. Kendall Small would come into the ninth and close the game out, leaving a one out walk on first.

Sean Deely would get the start for WilmU and go 6.0 innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, and four walks, while striking out four batters. Justin Mears would get the win and go to 1-4 overall, while Kendall Small picked up his first save of the season.

Small would go 3-for-4 throughout the game with a double, as Luke Johnson went 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a three-run home run. Frank Nigro also went 2-for-4 for the Wildcats, while Max Carney, Eddie Nevins, and Dakota Graham all had one hit for WilmU.

Dominican would leave 10 runners on the bases throughout the contest, with the Wildcats committing two errors.

With the win, Wilmington advances to the CACC Championship game tomorrow afternoon against Dominican starting at 12:00 p.m., as they defeated North Division No. 4 Bloomfield in the elimination game.

SUBJECT: No. 3 Softball’s Record Breaking Season Comes to an End, 7-4, to No. 7 New Haven in NCAA East Regional Tournament

MKR

NEW CASTLE, Del. – Three runs in the final two innings would give seventh seeded New Haven a 7-4 lead over third seeded Wilmington University softball, ending their record breaking season in the NCAA Division II East 2 Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon at Asbury Field.

The Chargers would jump on the board first, scoring three runs off a three-run homerun to take an early lead, heading into the Wildcats first at bats.

Kiana Broderson-Jones would start the bottom half of the inning with a one out single to left center, before stealing second to get the Wildcats going. Alyssa Velasquez would be in the three-hole and come up with a double to center, which would score Broderson-Jones and bring the deficit to 3-1.

New Haven would get one more back in the top of the second on a double to make it 4-1 lead in their favor. The Wildcats would get two on in scoring position in the bottom of the third, but the Chargers would retire three in a row to get out of the inning, stranding the runners on.

A quick 1-2-3 inning for Caitlyn Whiteside in the top of the fourth would bring the Wildcats back to the plate. Lauren Lopez would start the inning with a leadoff walk, before designated player, Kiersten Comer followed her with another walk to put both on. Lexi Baughman would then do her job and lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners in scoring position, before Angela Antonini loaded the bases on a hit by pitch.

With the bases loaded and still with one out, Alexis Sann gave the Wildcats their second run of the game with a single to left, scoring Lopez, bringing up the top of the order in Rosa’Lynn Burton. Burton would get in on the action with a single, before advancing to second on a fielding error, which scored two for WilmU, tying the ballgame at 4-4. The Wildcats would have another chance with the bases loaded, but would get two straight outs to end the three run inning.

Wilmington would have a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth, but stranded another runner on third. With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Chargers would take the go-ahead lead with a bases loaded walk to head into the bottom half of the inning. Another opportunity for the Wildcats was there, as Sann and Burton hit back-to-back singles to start the inning off, but New Haven was able to retire the next three batters in order, leaving the two runners on.

Still a one-run game heading into the final inning, the Chargers would hit a two-out, two-run shot to left to extend their lead to 7-4, heading into the Wildcats’ final at bats. After coming back from the 4-1 deficit, the Wildcats could not get a seventh inning rally going, ending the ballgame, 7-4.

Juniors Rosa’Lynn Burton and Alexis Sann both went 2-for-3 in the ballgame, as Burton had two RBI, as Sann collected one. Alyssa Velasquez had a double and one RBI in the contest, while Kiana Broderson-Jones had one hit.

Senior Caitlyn Whiteside would finish out her dominating season and career, going 7.0 IP, allowing eight hits, six earned runs, and four walks, while striking out four batters. Whiteside would end the season with a single season wins record of 20-9. The CACC Pitcher of the Year leaves Wilmington, pitching the most innings in program history with 678.2 throughout her career, among other career program records.

Wilmington would finish the season 39-15 overall, capturing their best overall record in program history.

SUBJECT: BACK-TO-BACK: Bats Come Alive in CACC Championship Game as Wildcats Claim Eighth Title, 14-8, over Dominican

DATE: May 11, 2019

WATERBURY, Conn. - - Last year it took the performance of the pitching staff of the Wilmington University baseball team to claim the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship, but the 2019 version was led by the bats, as the Wildcats won back-to-back titles with a 14-8 victory over Dominican on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.

It is the first time the Wildcats won back-to-back CACC Tournament Championships since they won three straight from 2011-13. This is also head coach Brian August and the Wildcats’ eighth conference championship since becoming NCAA eligible for the 2005 season. V

With the win, the Wildcats earn the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament and await their fate with the NCAA Selection Show scheduled for Sunday night at 10:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.

The Wildcats led the conference in hitting all season long, and needed the bats more than ever in Saturday’s championship game. They trailed at multiple points throughout the day, including 2-0, 4-1, and 7-5, before scoring nine runs in their final four at-bats to claim the trophy.

CACC Tournament MVP Max Carney put the Wildcats on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, and then gave the home team a 5-4 lead with a two-run single in the bottom of the third. But Dominican answered right back with a three-run top of the fourth, and carried their 7-5 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

But that is when the Wildcats’ bats took off, as Kendall Small reached by getting hit by a pitch to start the inning. CACC Player of the Year Eddie Nevins then tripled to chase home Small before Luke Johnson singled to score Nevins and tie the game, 7-7. Now with two outs in the inning, the Wildcats executed a first and third double steal to take the lead before Brett Nowell singled into right field to score Carney for the 9-7 advantage.

The Chargers tacked on a run with a sacrifice fly, but the Wildcats finished out the game with five unanswered runs to take the Championship. Nevins had an RBI ground out before Luke Johnson made it 11-8 with an RBI single. Dakota Graham then hit a double to the gap in right center for two more runs in the seventh before Brooks Ryan capped the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth for the 14-8 lead.

Starting pitcher Dan Hyatt didn’t have his typical start, but went five and struck out three while allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits to improve to 9-1 on the year. Danny Sullivan tossed 2.1 innings while only allowing one unearned runs before Zach Frederick came on and finished off the eighth. Kendall Small then struck out a pair in the ninth, including the championship out to spark the dog pile.

Max Carney went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Luke Johnson went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Dakota Graham, Eddie Nevins, and Brooks Ryan each had two hits as well, with Nevins collecting four RBI.

The Wildcats also have won CACC Tournament Championships in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2018.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Tennis Rolls to 4-0 NCAA Tournament Victory Over Concordia (NY)

Goldey-Beacom grabbed all the momentum early against fellow-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Concordia (NY) and did not relinquish, rolling to a 4-0 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Weymouth, MA.

The Lightning’s third NCAA Tournament triumph in program history is the first via shutout and the second against a CACC opponent. The first such CACC win came in 2015, a 5-3 victory over Chestnut Hill.

Third-seeded GBC (15-4) is on to the second round and will battle No. 2 seed Stonehill, beginning at noon at the Weymouth Club in Weymouth, MA.

Junior Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and freshman Maria Bruno (Maracay, Venezuela) got things going for the Lightning with a 6-3 triumph at second doubles over Kristel Kalm and Katrina Sta Cruz from the sixth-seeded Clippers (15-8).

The highly anticipated rubber at first doubles between 13th-ranked sophomores Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) and Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) against No. 40 Angelica Karlsson and Josefina Torres lived up to the hype. The battle went to a tiebreak before Goldey-Beacom found its way to a 7-6 (9-7) triumph for the doubles point.

It was their 20th victory of the year, the most by one team in school history and one off the mark set last season by Frekrika Regner.

The momentum and enthusiasm carried into singles play. This started with Zheng rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at second singles over Kalm. It was Zheng’s team-leading 17th singles triumph of the season, tied for the third most in program annals.

Junior Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) kept things going at fifth singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Franziska Putschbach for a 3-0 GBC lead. Lesscher y Post ended things with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Karlsson for her 15th singles victory of the season.

The Lightning also won their opening sets in the three unfinished matches. Freshman Elin Anderson (Conwy, Wales) was up 6-4 at third singles, junior Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) held a 6-4 cushion at No. 4 singles and freshman Andrea Fresneda (Valencia, Spain) opened a 6-1 margin at sixth singles.

SUBJECT: Three Run Eighth Inning Ends Baseball’s Season, 6-3, as NYIT Advances to East Super Regional Series

DATE: May 18, 2019
djl

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - - A three-run bottom of the eighth inning was too much to overcome as the fourth seeded Wilmington University baseball team fell to fifth seeded NYIT, 6-3, in the NCAA Division II East 1 Regional Final on Saturday at Bonomo Field on the campus of Adelphi University.

The loss ends the 2019 season for the Wildcats, being only the second team in the program’s NCAA era to win 40 games. They finished 40-17 overall, winning their eighth Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, and second straight Bill Giles Invitational. The 40 wins are second most in program history, second to only the 2013 team who posted 43 wins.

Trailing for the majority of the game, the Wildcats had life late, tying the game, 3-3, with a two-run top of the eighth inning. But the Bears (35-14) answered right back with a three-run bottom half, regaining the lead, 6-3, heading into the ninth and final inning.

The Wildcats then brought the tying run to the plate with one out in their final at-bats, but a pair of ground balls ended the game and allowed NYIT to advance to the NCAA East Super Regional next weekend.

Kendall Small broke his own single season hits record in the top of the first inning, collecting his 78th base knock of the year. He went 3-for-5, ending his storybook career with his name plastered all over the record books. He had 80 hits this year, totaling 238 for his career. He also set a new single season RBI record with his sixth inning double, bringing in his 63rd run of the year to break Jason Rust’s mark set in 2007. His 165 career RBI are also a new program record.

The Bears took an early lead on the Wildcats, scoring three times in the bottom of the second inning. A one out single put runners on first and third before a double scored the game’s first run. A second run came home on a chopper to first, as the runner was able to beat the throw home. A sacrifice fly then put the Bears on top, 3-0, after two complete innings.

It looked as though the Wildcats were starting something in the top of the third, as Frank Nigro avoided a tag running to first to put the first two runners of the inning on. But it was finally ruled Nigro was out of the base line, and a runner was left on third to end the inning.

The Wildcats had a chance in the sixth, as Nigro started the inning off with a double down the left field line. Dakota Graham walked to put two runners on but Quintin Ivy’s hard hit ball up the middle was stopped and turned into a double play to halt a big rally. Kendall Small scored the runner from third with a double inside the first base bag and back-to-back walks loaded the bases with two outs. But Max Carney’s fly ball to right was caught to end the threat.

Kendall Small doubled to put runners on second and third with one out in the eighth, and the Wildcats were looking to roll once more. Eddie Nevins delivered with a sacrifice fly to bring the game to 3-2, and Brooks Ryan beat out a single down the third base line, scoring Small to tie the game, 3-3.

Max Carney kept the inning alive with a bunt base hit, but Luke Johnson’s pinch-hit attempt was fielded, ending the inning with two runners on base.

A leadoff walk came around to score in the bottom of the eighth and then a pair of two out hits tacked on two more runs and the 6-3 lead for the Bears.

Frank Nigro singled and Dakota Graham was hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth. But a chopper to third produced the second out before a grounder to first ended the game.

Dan Sullivan threw 3.1 innings of relief, allowing only one hit while Rudy Gervolino came on and got out the sixth and went 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.

Max Carney finishes his career second all time with 222 hits, going 1-for-4 on Saturday. Kendall Small went 3-for-5 with two doubles while Frank Nigro ended his career with a 2-for-4 performance.
