Goldey Beacom College Athletic News

A blistering week for Goldey-Beacom Athletics not only was rewarding on the playing field, but off it as well with eight student-athletes garnering weekly awards from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Sophomore Sophie Woods (Manchester, England) was crowned Women’s Soccer Rookie of the week and senior Joe Traynor (Warminster, PA/William Tennant) was tabbed Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week to highlight the bunch. The remaining six made the Weekly Honor Roll for their respective sport and that includes junior Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) for men’s soccer, senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) for women’s soccer, senior Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) and freshman Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) for women’s tennis, junior Jordan Dodson (Port Deposit, MD/Perryville) for cross country and senior Grace McCarthy (Middletown, DE/Delaware Military Academy) for volleyball.

Woods scored twice to help Goldey-Beacom improve to its best start in school history. She scored in double overtime of Wednesday’s 2-1 victory at Chowan and then netted the Lightning’s first goal in their 2-1 triumph Saturday at Nyack.

Traynor was pressed into service Saturday at Nyack and got the victory in goal, making three saves in the Lightning’s 1-0 victory. For the week, he made four saves over 108 minutes.

Silvestre converted a penalty kick in the 59th minute of Saturday’s victory at Nyack. It was his fourth career goal and third against the Warriors, including an overtime tally last season.

Aguirre went 2-0 last week, only needing to make four saves over 193 minutes. She did not have to make a save over 103 minutes Wednesday at Chowan and came up with four Saturday vs. Nyack.

Sengl did not drop a set during singles play and also teamed for a double victory in her lone appearance last week. She rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at fifth singles over Emily Zygmunt of Philadelphia University and teamed with senior Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles vs. Jala Hamada and Linde Zwaan.

Garcia Valle won in both singles and doubles Friday against Philadelphia University, an 8-1 triumph for GBC. She recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory at fourth singles over Mariana Sampaio and also paired with freshman Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) for an 8-3 win at third doubles over Katelyn High and Emily Zygmunt.

Dodson continued to buoy the Lightning by ending ninth overall and second among non-Division I runners at the DSU Hornet Invitational. She closed in 21:53.10 over the 5,000-meter course.

McCarthy totaled 27 kills, 20 digs, a .368 hitting percentage, six aces and a block assist over two matches last week. She had 10 kills, a .474 percentage, 11 digs and three aces Tuesday at Bowie State before totaling 17 kills, a .316 percentage, nine digs and three aces Thursday vs. Cheyney, both GBC wins.

SUBJECT: Wildcats’ Offense Continues to Shine in 5-0 Blanking of Chestnut Hill in CACC Opener

DATE: September 13, 2016

NEWARK, Del. - - The offense continues to click on all cylinders for the Wilmington University men’s soccer team, as it opens Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action with a 5-0 victory over Chestnut Hill on Tuesday at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (3-0, 1-0 CACC) have now scored 14 goals in their first three games of the 2016 season, averaging 4.67 goals a game. Of the 14 goals, 10 have come in the first half so far this season.

The early scoring continued on Tuesday, as the Wildcats scored four in the first half to command the game. The CACC Player of the Week also remained red hot for the Wildcats, as Juan Bernal tallied two more goals against the Griffins (0-4, 0-2 CACC).

Bernal started the scoring in the 16th minute, finishing off a nice touch pass by Jamie Burridge into the box. Bernal went far post from the left side, banking it in off the post for the early 1-0 lead. Newcomer Sam Jester finished home a corner kick opportunity in the 25th minute, getting a head on the end of an in-swinging corner from Fredrik Bentdal at the near post.

Junior Alex Luke etched his name into the scoring column later in the first half, beating the Chestnut Hill goalkeeper to a rebound opportunity. Lorne Bickley’s initial shot was saved by the Griffin keeper, but managed to sneak under the arm and role towards the goal line. Luke got a toe on it before the keeper could scoop up the loose ball, making it 3-0 in favor of the Wildcats in the 39th minute.

Bernal was at it again just before the half, getting a fortunate bounce at the top of the penalty box off a defender and overtop of the Griffin goalkeeper with 21 seconds to play. It was Bernal’s fourth goal of the young season.

The Wildcats tacked another goal on in the second half, finishing the scoring in the 86th minute. The reigning CACC Rookie of the Week Bickley stayed hot as well, scoring his third goal of the year off a combo play at the top of the box with Joel Flores. Bickley slotted the shot past the keeper’s left side for the 5-0 lead.

Vinny Tasca recorded two saved in goal for the Wildcats, making one stop on a break-a-way opportunity in the first half when the score was just 1-0. Dominic Folarin also cleared a ball off the goal line in the second half to pressure the team’s first shutout of the season.

The Wildcats conclude their four-game homestand to start the season on Saturday, as they host Bloomfield. Saturday is also the 2017 Wilmington University Homecoming Festivities. Tailgating spots can be purchased at wilmu.edu/homecoming. The opening whistle is slated for approximately 2:30 p.m.

Garrett Brown Ends Tied for Seventh for Men’s Golf at the Glade Springs Intercollegiate

Senior Garrett Brown (Severn, MD/Glen Burnie) continued his solid start to the fall of 2016 by closing tied for seventh, propelling Goldey-Beacom at the Glade Springs Collegiate in Daniels, WV.

Brown followed his opening-round 78 with a second-round 76 and then concluded things with a 75 to shoot 229. The two-time NCAA Regional participant, who had 10 sub-80 rounds last year, ended seven shots behind Connor Sheehan from Millersville.

Junior Andre Primeau (Pontypool, ON) finished tied for 36th with 239 that included a final-round 78. Senior Chris Mandia (Catskill, NY) carded a second-round 78, closing tied for 65th with 246.

Freshman Shea Murphy (Wilmington, DE/Wilmington Charter) shot 266 and junior Barry Frankel (Sykesville, MD/Century) fired 285 for the Lightning, who finished 16th with 979. West Liberty shot 922 for a three-shot win over West Chester.

Goldey-Beacom is in action next Sunday and Monday at the Navy Fall Classic in Annapolis, MD.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Still Unblemished With 3-0 Triumph Over Queens (NY)

A four-for-four scenario actually exists in the Philadelphia area. It is not a contrived one, but one which describes the undefeated and untied Goldey-Beacom women’s soccer team.

Amy Runciman (Luton, England) recorded a second-half brace and fellow junior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) found the back of the net in the first half for Goldey-Beacom, which continued its best start in school history with a 3-0 victory over Queens (NY) at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

GBC (4-0) controlled the flow of the contest almost the entire way and patiently waited until the 36th minute to strike pay dirt. Off a corner kick from senior Lauren DeVault (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown), Runciman corralled the ball and nudged it to Turner-Rush for the latter’s second goal of the season and third career tally.

Runciman then moved over to the goal column in the 51st minute. Sophomore Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) got the in the box and fed Runciman, who chipped one off the left post and in for a 2-0 GBC cushion.

The Lightning in the 64th minute made sure the outcome no longer was in doubt. Junior Natalie Waltz (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) picked up the ball on the right side and passed it to Runciman, who buried it for her third career multi-goal game and a 3-0 contest.

Runciman, who last season was named first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and second team CCA All-East Region, now stands second in school history with 18 career assists and is tied for eighth with 46 points. Her 14 goals are one off the top 10.

Senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX), a reigning member on the CACC Weekly Honor Roll, notched a career-best 12 saves and becomes the second goalkeeper in school history with at least 10 shutouts. Stephanie Steele (2003-06) owns the record with 14.

Runciman closed with six of her team’s 12 shots.

Erin Vernillo attempted six shots and Megan Deak amassed three saves over 64 minutes for the Knights (1-3).

Goldey-Beacom continues its four-game homestand Thursday vs. Shippensburg, starting at 4:00 pm.

SUBJECT: Allison Briley Sets Single Match Kills Record in Leading Wilmington Volleyball Back to 3-2 Win at Kutztown

DATE: September 13, 2016
djl

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - - A record setting performance carried the Wilmington University volleyball team back from a 2-0 hole as the Wildcats battled back to take a 3-2 victory at Kutztown on Tuesday night in the Keystone Arena.

Set scores for the match were 22-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-18, and 15-13.

Senior outside hitter Allison Briley led the comeback charge and etched her name in the record books by doing so. She set a new single match program mark with 31 kills on Tuesday, committing only four errors while hitting .409 for the match. Her record setting 27th kill came late in the fourth set to put the Wildcats ahead, 19-13.

Briley’s 31 kills breaks the mark set by Kristin Wiedeman in 2005 when she put down 26 kills at NJIT. Wiedeman also had the second and third most kills in a match in program history, collecting 23 in two separate matches during the 2005 season as well.

But the match wasn’t as easy as Briley was making it seem, as the Wildcats (3-6) found themselves down 2-0 after the first two sets. The Wildcats rallied and jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third but the Golden Bears (2-5) fought back to tie the set at 11-11. The Wildcats surged ahead once more, grabbing a 19-14 lead before earning set point at 24-21. But the Golden Bears weren’t going away, as they came up with three straight points to tie the set, 24-24. Again tied at 25, Briley put down her sixth and seventh kills of the third set to keep the Wildcats alive and win the set, 27-25.

The Wildcats continued the momentum into the fourth set, turning a 10-9 deficit into leads of 18-12, 19-13, and 20-14. The teams continued to trade points when Rebecca Rawlinson ended the game with a kill at 25-18. Briley again finished the set with seven kills.

It looked as though the Wildcats were going to run away with the first set, going on a 6-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. But the Golden Bears made a run of their own, using a 7-1 spurt to regain an 11-10 lead. Briley ended the run with her 31st and final kill of the night to tie the set at 11-11, before an attack error put the Wildcats ahead, 12-11. Tied at 13, another Kutztown attack error gave the Wildcats match point and Megan Ward quickly ended it with a service ace for the 3-2 win.

Briley went for seven kills in the first, six in the second, seven in the third, seven in the fourth, and four in the fifth. She only committed four errors on 66 attempts to lead the team with a .409 attack percentage. The senior also added in a team high 19 digs for the double-double.

Eile Harris put down 11 kills while hitting .296 and added five block assists and a solo block. Rawlinson was the final Wildcat in double figures with 10 kills, adding three block assists and two solo blocks. Addalyn Flores and Brianna Cunha tallied 17 digs while Emma Kongevold tallied 13 and Jenna Brown collected 12 more.

Miranda Shaw finished with the third most assists in a single match in program history with 57, four away from setting a single match record. She added 14 digs for the double-double.

The Wildcats remain on the road for their next match but begin their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference slate on Saturday. The Wildcats will head to Felician for a North/South crossover with the first serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Women’s Tennis Earns Program’s First Ever Victory, Defeating Bloomsburg, 8-1

DATE: September 13, 2016
djl

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - - Led by a sweep in doubles matches, the Wilmington University women’s tennis team earned its first ever victory in just the program’s second ever match, defeating Bloomsburg, 8-1, under the lights on Tuesday night at the Burt Reese Tennis Center.

All three doubles matches came out on top for the Wildcats (1-1), putting the team in good position before the singles matches started. Five of the six singles won in straight sets while the final singles match was called in the second set due to an injury, after the Wildcats won the first set.

“I’m so proud of this team,” head coach Brad Rose said. “To come out and earn a victory in only their second match as a program is special. The girls worked hard all preseason and have gelled really well as a team after coming here from all over the world. I’m excited, and these girls are excited, to be a part of the first win here at Wilmington.”

The doubles match of the night was at number two doubles, as sophomore Anushka Sathe and sophomore Milica Knezevic jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to an 8-1 victory. Freshmen Laura Gil and Begona Gomar earned an 8-2 victory at number one doubles while freshman Sabrina Blasi-Smith and Dorotea Rankovic finished off the sweep with an 8-4 victory.

Sathe and Knezevic remained hot going into the singles matches as they both finished with 6-0, 6-1 victories. Sathe earned the victory at number one singles while Knezevic helped the Wildcats at number five singles.

Gil used a strong return game to win at number three singles, 6-2, 6-2, while Rankovic earned a ton of points at the net in a 6-4, 6-1 victory at number six singles. Gomar capped the night with the team’s eight win at number two singles, 6-3 and 6-1. Blasi-Smith took the first set, 6-4, on the strength of her forehand at number four singles, but retired due to injury in the second set.

The win propels the Wildcats into Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday, as they will play on their home court at the Delcastle Tennis Center. Splitting the Center with Goldey-Beacom, the two will meet on Wednesday with Goldey-Beacom slated as the home team. First service is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: Pair of Second Half Tallies Lead Wilmington Women’s Soccer to 2-0 Victory against Chestnut Hill

DATE: September 14, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - A pair of second half goals carried the Wilmington University women’s soccer team to a 2-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Chestnut Hill at the WU Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

The ball remained in Chestnut Hill’s side of the field for the bulk of the game, resulting in the Wildcats (3-1, 2-0 CACC) out shooting the Griffins (1-3, 0-2 CACC), 18-4. But it was hard to find the finishing touch on Wednesday, as only six of the shots were on frame.

The best chance in the first half came off the foot of Rebecca Dolhansky, as her shot form outside the 18-yard box beat the goalkeeper but glanced off the crossbar and out of play in the 35th minute.

Dolhansky had a say in both the second half goals, however, sending timely through balls down the middle to allow her teammates to get on the end. The first through ball came in the 54th minute, as Dolhansky stole the ball at midfield and slotted Gabrielle Perry down the middle. Perry beat her defender to the ball in the box and beat the goalkeeper to her left for the 1-0 lead.

Dolhansky was at it again in the 76th minute, receiving a ball in her own half after Laura van Steveninck stripped the Griffin of the ball on an attack. Dolhansky took her space before sending a through ball down the middle and past the defense. Kelly Robbins got on the end of it and went one-on-one with the keeper. Her first attempt went off the post, but she stayed with her shot and buried the rebound for her first goal of the year.

Carin Essex-Arline had an opportunity late to add to the lead, but her header off a corner went just high in the 88th minute.

Kierstyn Williams faced four shots but did not need to make a save before giving way to teammate Martina Stewart in the 88nd minute. It is the second shutout of the season for the Wildcats.

It is the first time since the 2012 season that the Wildcats started the CACC portion of the schedule at 2-0.

The Wildcats remain home for their next contest, as they host Bloomfield on Saturday to kick off the 2017 Wilmington University Homecoming festivities. There is still time to purchase a tailgating parking spot by logging on to wilmu.edu/homecoming. The opening whistle for the women’s game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

Chahin Aghrim Nets a Pair for Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer in 3-0 Win over UDC

Sophomore Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) notched his first career brace and senior Rerom Delys (Vila Velha, Brazil) had two assists for Goldey-Beacom, which posted a 3-0 victory over the District of Columbia at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

Aghrim in the 15th minute put away the only goal his side would need. Delys won a 50/50 ball in the box and worked it to Aghrim, who put it home for a 1-0 GBC lead.

The margin doubled in the 68th minute thanks to Aghrim’s fourth career goal. Junior Alvaro Martinez (Zaragoza, Spain) placed a perfect corner kick from the right side on the forehead of Aghrim, who headed it just under the cross bar.

The Lightning made it 3-0 in the 82nd minute when, after Delys’ initial shot was blocked, junior Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) buried the rebound for his second goal of the season and fifth career.

Junior Lorenzo Gama (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) attempted four shots and sophomore Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) totaled three saves for GBC, which closed with a 15-9 shots edge and have outscored its opponents 10-5 this season.

Gabriel Torres and Kevin Claure Guzman each attempted three shots for the Firebirds (0-5).

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Concordia (NY) as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team. The men’s game starts after 3:15 pm, which follows the women’s 1:00 pm contest.

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis team dropped its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener, 7-2, to crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

The Wildcats’ (1-2, 0-1 CACC) first experience in the CACC came against one of the preseason favorite in Goldey-Beacom (2-0, 2-0 CACC). Despite close matches throughout, the Wildcats could only muster one doubles match and one singles match on the afternoon.

Sathe stretched the opening set at number one singles to an extra game, but couldn’t overcome Lea Schmuecker in falling 7-5 and 6-1. Gomar also played a close set to begin her match at number two singles, but fell to Anna Hortelano Pey, 6-4 and 6-3.

SUBJECT: Loran Wyrough Ties Record as Wilmington Women’s Soccer Runs Away from Bloomfield, 6-2, on Homecoming

NEWARK, Del. - - Trailing 2-1 in the first half, the Wilmington University women’s soccer team scored the final five goals in a 6-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Bloomfield on Homecoming Weekend at the WU Athletics Complex.

In what can’t even be described as a career day because she also had a game like this last year, redshirt junior Loran Wyrough tied her own program mark by scoring four goals on Saturday, including the eventual game winner in the 41stminute.

It is the second time in her career that she has scored four goals in a game, doing so last season at Nyack on October 20. She’s tied with herself and Kirsten Stallone for the single game program record.

Wyrough started the scoring in just the fourth minute, finding herself alone and in front of the goal after Teigh Ward made a run down the right side.

But Saturday wasn’t an easy task for the Wildcats, as Bloomfield scored back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead. The game-tying goal came in the 29th minute followed by the go-ahead goal in the 33rd minute.

But the Wildcats were able to retaliate late in the first half, tying the goal in the 40th minute on a set piece. Rebecca Dolhansky took the free kick from the right side and found the head of Carin Essex-Arline who buried her first goal of the season at the 39:37 mark. Wyrough gave the Wildcats a 3-2 halftime lead just moments later, receiving another feed from Ward for her second goal of the game at the 40:52 mark.

It was all Wilmington after the break, as Wyrough added to the lead in the 57th minute. She secured her hat trick by again finding herself in front of the goal mouth unmarked, getting on the end of a cross from the left side by Melissa Gall. Gall made a long run into the box and laid it across for Wyrough to slam home.

Ward was the catalyst for the Wildcats’ fifth goal of the day, making a run down the left side all the way to the end line. She found a charging Stephanie Alvarez for a the backwards pass and the junior transfer found the back of the net for her first goal as a Wildcat 69:01 into the match.

Wyrough capped her day and the scoring for the Wildcats in the 75th minute. Riley Thompson made a run down the right side of the field before crossing it towards the top of the 18-yard box. Wyrough made an excellent touch to corral the ball and buried a low shot for her record tying fourth goal of the afternoon.

The Wildcats out shot the Bears, 23-10, including 12-6 in the second half. They also earned more corners, 6-1, for the afternoon.

Kierstyn Williams recorded three saves for the Wildcats before giving way to Martina Stewart for the final 15:02. Stewart made two stops in her time to secure the victory.

The Wildcats head out of conference for a game this week when they travel to LIU Post on Wednesday. The Pioneers ranked fourth in this week’s NSCAA East Regional Poll. The opening whistle is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Men’s Soccer Drops First Decision of Season, 3-1, to Bloomfield on Homecoming

DATE: September 17, 2016

NEWARK, Del. - - A pair of second half goals stifled the Wilmington University men’s soccer team as they were beaten for the first time this season, 3-1, against Bloomfield at the WU Athletics Complex on Homecoming Weekend.

In a matchup of two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference teams that always seem to battle each other tough, the Bears (2-3, 1-1 CACC) got the better of the Wildcats (3-1, 1-1 CACC) on Saturday afternoon. It snapped a four-game winning streak by the Wildcats in the all-time series.

Bloomfield out shot the Wildcats, 11-8, for the match, using a 9-5 advantage in the second half to tilt the tide. Although they only collected two shots in the first half, they were the team that struck first.

On a set piece opportunity, the Bears beat Vinny Tasca with a low header for the 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. The Bears put the free kick from the right side into the box, and Hugues Douyon get on the end of the one-hop service for his second goal of the season.

The Wildcats retaliated in the first half, tying the game in the 31st minute. Manuel Ruiz-Luque was the recipient of a nice run by Keith Sanderson down the right side. Sanderson got all the way to the end line before centering the ball. Alex Luke got a touch on the ball at the near post, directing the ball towards the center of the goal. Ruiz-Luque was there for the one-time goal at the 30:49 mark.

The Bears came out of the break and put the first four shots and two corners in the books before the Wildcats settled in. But it was the Bears that broke the 1-1 tie in the 78th minute.

A fortuitous bounce in the backfield allowed the Bears to put a through ball down the middle and into the top of the box. Bloomfield’s Amin Miller’s one touch shot beat the Tasca who came off his line to challenge the shot with 12:07 left in the second half.

The Wildcats had an opportunity to tie the match, but Lorne Bickley’s shot was wide in the 81st minute. The ensuing goal-kick was headed into the Wildcats end and allowed Shaunavon DeSouza to get in behind the defense. Tasca forced DeSouza to the end line, but the Bears were waiting in the box with an open goal. Nathaniel Valencia was able to score his first of the year after DeSouza kept the ball in play on the end line.

The Wildcats collected three shots in the 3:55, but the ball wouldn’t find the back of the net.

Tasca made three saves in goal for the Wildcats while Bloomfield’s goalkeeper Wilson Cisneros recorded one stop for the victory.

After going 3-1 at home to start the season, the Wildcats hit the road this week for two games. They open the week on Tuesday at West Chester with a 4:00 p.m. start.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Rallies From Two Down for Stunning 3-2 Win Over Concordia (NY)

Sophomore Chahin Aghrim’s goal in the 89th minute capped Goldey-Beacom’s furious comeback from two goals down in the second half for an incredulous 3-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Concordia (NY) at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

In an incredible turn of events, Aghrim got the Lightning going in the 69th minute with his first goal for a 2-1 deficit. He was able to corral the ball passed to him by junior Mateus Silvestre (Picarras, Brazil) and raced up field, turning it into a fast-break tally.

Junior Declyn Brown (Glasgow, Scotland) was the next beneficiary of a great pass from Silvestre as his shot in the 73rd minute found its way inside the right post for a 2-2 tie. It was Brown’s third goal of the season.

This all set the stage for the final moments. Concordia’s Cristian Perez committed a foul roughly 20 yards from goal that resulted in a yellow card and a free kick. Silvestre was called upon to do the honors and as if the climax really was in doubt, he found a wide-open Aghrim sprinting on the right side and the latter found the back of the net with 72 seconds remaining.

It was Aghrim’s second consecutive brace, his fourth goal of the season and sixth career.

It only was Goldey-Beacom’s second victory over Concordia and snapped a five-game skid in the series.

Brown finished with three shots and sophomore Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) made five saves for the Lightning (4-1, 2-0 CACC), who are unbeaten in two league games for the second time in three seasons.

Oakley fired seven shots and Jaime Gonzalez ended with four saves for the Clippers (2-3, 2-1).

Ovan Oakley got the Clippers on the board in the fifth minute, taking a pass from Javier Alvarez Vispo and putting a shot inside the left post. Oakley again come through in the 36th minute, rebounding a shot from Alvarez Vispo and scoring for his fourth tally of the season and a 2-0 Concordia bulge.

Goldey-Beacom is home Monday against East Stroudsburg, starting at 4:00 pm.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Battles to the End in 3-1 Loss to Georgian Court

Goldey-Beacom held a first-half lead against the top seed from last year’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, but surrendered three markers in the second half for a 3-1 setback at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning garnered the early momentum when sophomore Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) scored in the 10th minute, marking the first time the Lions had been breached in four league games this season. After getting a cross from senior Jane Grimley (Franklinville, NJ), Crammond corraled the ball and booted one home from six yards for her first goal of the season and seventh career.

Georgian Court turned on the pressure in the second half and leveled the match, 1-1, in the 65th minute. Kaitin Lister lofted a corner kick from the right that took a weird bounce off Amanda Astudillo and somehow found its way inside the right post.

Astudillo again was on the case for the Lions for another odd deflection, this time in the 82nd minute. A high pass from Taylor Bramley was deflected high in the air and when it came down, Astudillo was right on the doorstep to nudge in her fourth goal of the season and a 2-1 GCU lead.

Lister worked her magic on a corner kick to settle matters, scoring directly off the free boot from the left in the 88th minute for the visitors fourth straight win.

Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ) attempted three shots and fellow senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) made four saves for Goldey-Beacom (5-2, 2-1 CACC).

Astudillo took four shots off the bench and Natalie Axelsson did not have to make a save for the Lions (4-2, 4-0).

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday at Bloomfield as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team. The women’s game starts at 1:30 pm, followed by the men’s contest after 3:45 pm.

QUECHEE, Vt. - - The Wilmington University golf team placed a pair of student-athletes in the top five at the Quechee Division II Challenge, as senior Miguel Siercke earned a share of the medalist honors to open the 2016-17 season at the Quechee Club on Tuesday.

Siercke tied with Bentley’s Cal Meyers with a 142 (-2) two round score to earn top billing at the tournament while senior Sam Clark finished tied for fourth overall with a 72-72, 144 (E) in the two-day tournament.

The five Wildcats in attendance were playing as individuals at the tournament, but if they were playing as a team, the Wildcats would have won the Quechee Division II Challenge with a 288-299 score. The team’s 587 (+11) would have been one shot better than Bentley for the lowest combined score for the tournament.

Newcomer Zac Moore was the third Wildcat in the Top 10 of the individual scores, finishing tied for ninth overall with a 73-75 for a 148 (+4). Freddy Braun closed out the first tournament of the year with a 75-78, totaling a 153 (+9) and sitting in a tie for 25th overall. Freshman Jack Dixon moved up five spots on the leaderboard from his first round, finishing in a tie for 36th overall with a 78-79 for a 157 (+13) in his first collegiate tournament.

The Wildcats are back in action on October when they will either travel to Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., for the GolfRanks Invitational or to Watertown, Conn., for the Post University Eagle Invitational.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis program earned its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on Tuesday, defeating the University of the Sciences, 6-3, at the McNeil Athletic Fields.

The Wildcats used a pair of doubles wins to gain momentum heading into the singles events. The Wildcats went on to capture four of the singles match, improving to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the CACC.

The strongest doubles victory came at number two doubles, as Anushka Sathe and Milica Knezevic combined for an 8-3 victory to set the wheels in motion. Begona Gomar and Laura Gil earned a hard fought and close, 9-7, doubles victory at number one doubles. The Devils prevented the clean doubles sweep by the Wildcats at number three doubles, despite a close match by Sabrina Blasi-Smith and Lauren Kriger. The duo battled hard but dropped a 9-7 decision.

Gil continued with her momentum from doubles into her singles match, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory at number three singles. Blasi-Smith picked up her first singles victory of the year, 6-4 and 6-3, at number four singles while Gomar continued her success on Tuesday with a win at number two singles, 6-3 and 6-0. Knezevic secured the team victory at number five singles, winning in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1.

The Wildcats have an opportunity to get above .500 for the first time in program history when they again head to Philadelphia for another CACC contest on Thursday. The Wildcats head to Holy Family for another 3:30 p.m. start.

Game #4 vs Albright College Lions

Saturday, September 24 - 1 p.m.

Robert A. Lipinski Field at James Work Memorial Stadium
(Doylestown, Pa.)

For Immediate Release (9-19-16)
Contact: Matt Levy (215) 489-2937

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University will put its undefeated record to the test on Saturday, September 24 when the 14th-ranked Aggies host defending Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) champion Albright College. Kickoff at Robert A. Lipinski Field at James Work Memorial Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.

The DelVal Hall of Fame ceremony, which was rescheduled following the heat-related move of the home opener against Misericordia, will take place at halftime as Tony D’Amico ’00 (baseball), Mike Margelis ’01 (wrestling) and Adam Knoblauch ’06 (football) will officially be inducted.

DelVal and Albright were picked one-two and were separated by just one point in the MAC preseason coaches’ poll. The Aggies had 75 total points while the Lions received more first-place votes (6 to 4).

DelVal enters the game a perfect 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play following last Saturday’s 49-14 triumph at King’s College. It marked the second week in a row that the Aggies led a MAC opponent, 42-0, at halftime as they did the same to Misericordia on September 9 before finishing with a 49-7 rout.

DelVal scored on its first seven drives of the game against King’s. The offense racked up 440 total yards, including 278 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Meanwhile, the Aggie defense held the Monarchs to just two rushing yards and 125 yards of total offense.

DelVal’s offense is averaging 39.7 points and 431.7 yards per game. Heading the unit is sophomore quarterback Dashawn Darden (Norristown, PA/Cardinal O’Hara), who took over as the starter prior to the Aggies’ meeting with undefeated Albright (6-0) last year and led the team to a 28-23 road victory.

This year, Darden has completed 39 of 58 passes for 612 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. He has also rushed for 79 yards and one score. Darden had a strong showing at King’s as he was 11-for-19 for 121 yards and two touchdowns in the air while netting 49 yards on seven rushes.

Darden’s favorite targets are wideouts Eric Shorter (Trenton, NJ/Princeton) and Mike Jensen (Woodbridge, NJ/Bishop George Ahr). Shorter, a sophomore, has hauled in 10 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown and he also has a kickoff return for a touchdown to his credit. He had four grabs for 21 yards last week.

Jensen caught three passes for 41 yards and a pair of touchdowns against King’s. The performance upped the senior’s season numbers to seven receptions for 106 yards and three trips to the end zone.

The DelVal rushing attack is paced by the tailback tandem of 2015 all-conference honorees Robert Cleveland (Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro) and Devauntay Ellis (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) as the two combined for 1,310 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Last week against King’s, they each found the end zone two times and finished with a combined 116 yards on 23 touches.

Individually, Cleveland, a senior, has carried the ball 30 times for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Ellis, a junior, has 122 yards and three scores on 28 carries. Ellis has also caught four passes for 116 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Aggies have allowed just 35 points on the year, only 14 by the first unit. They also are permitting just 261.3 yards per contest.

Junior safety Shawn Miller (Laurel, DE/Laurel) head the defense with 20 tackles and is tied for the team lead in interceptions with three. He had 14 stops and tied a school record with three picks in the season-opening win at seventh-ranked Wesley College. Miller had four tackles at King’s.

Fellow junior Nick Wright (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) recorded two of his three interceptions on the year at King’s and both gave the Aggies excellent field position (they converted both into touchdowns). Wright has eight tackles and a team-best four pass breakups on the year.

Linebackers Nicholas DiGati (Townsend, DE/Middletown) and Frank Law (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley), along with safety Jarren McBryde (Brigantine, NJ/Atlantic City) are tied for second on the team in tackles with 15. The trio combined for eight stops at King’s.

ALBRIGHT COLLEGE

The Lions dropped its first two games with setbacks to Salisbury University (34-18) and Stevenson University (31-26), but bounced back with last Saturday’s 17-3 triumph over Lycoming College.

Albright held the Warriors to their lowest point total in Reading since 1976. The Lion defense forced three turnovers on the day while the offense, without starting quarterback Mike Knight, racked up 414 total yards.

Knight, who was the MAC Rookie of the Year in 2015, has played just a game and a half this season and has completed 28 of 53 passes for 272 yards and three interceptions. Junior Alec Vignola got the start against Lycoming and was 19-for-27 for 253 yards and one score.

Junior Malik Jackson is the team’s leading receiver with 17 catches for 201 yards. He had three grabs for 36 yards last week. Kyle Dickerson and Vinny Williams follow with 13 catches apiece and they have gone for a combined 333 yards and three touchdowns. They combined for 10 catches for 159 yards and one trip to the end zone in the win over Lycoming.

The Lion ground attack is led by junior Roemello Monroe as he has lugged the ball 60 times for 320 yards and three touchdowns. He has 117 yards in back-to-back games and his output against Lycoming came on 25 carries.

Defensively, Albright is permitting 22.7 points and 306.7 yards per game. Senior linebacker Kevin Mason paces the unit with 30 tackles, including a team-high 11 stops (10 solo) against Lycoming.

Two other players to watch are junior linebacker Grant Boehler and senior end Rich Kuhn. Boehler has 20 tackles and one sack on the year with two stops coming against Lycoming. Kuhn had six tackles and two sacks last week to up his season totals to nine tackles and a team-high three sacks.

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Senior Aaron DaCosta (Newark, Del./Archmere Academy) and sophomore Cole McIntire (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) both recorded a goal and an assist, and the Saint Michael's College men's soccer team held off Saint Anselm College, 2-1, on Wednesday at Melucci Field.

The Purple Knights moved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, posting a perfect 3-0 mark at Melucci Field this season after winning the two-game Catholic Cup in early September. Saint Michael's is 8-2 in its last 10 one-goal games, as well as 6-3-3 against the Hawks since 2006. The victory was the Purple and Gold's first over Saint Anselm on its home field since 2007, while 14 of the last 16 meetings have now been decided by one goal or less. The Hawks are 1-4 and 0-3.

DaCosta and McIntire accounted for all of the Purple Knights' points, and first-year Gabriel Pineda (Miami, Fla./Immaculata-La Salle) stopped two shots. DaCosta reached a pair of milestones on the day, moving into a tie for ninth in program history in career goals (15) and a tie for 10th in points (40). With 10 assists, he is one shy of moving into the top 10 in that category, as only three Purple Knights are among the top 10 in all three.

Senior Jack Lynch scored for Saint Anselm, while classmate Stephen McLeod made one save. The hosts held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks, while each team took eight shots.

On the game's first shot, McIntire broke the deadlock 9:51 after the opening whistle, heading home DaCosta's long overhead pass beyond an advancing McLeod. The only other shots on net in the half - and all three saves in the game - came in the final 3:37, as Pineda stopped junior Jack Heintzelman in the 42nd and 43rd minutes before Purple Knight first-year Jacob von Giebel's (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) countered the second bid 17 seconds later but was denied by McLeod.

DaCosta converted the first shot of the second period to double the lead at 51:20, depositing McIntire's long ball over the defense into the lower right corner. On the next shot of the game, Hawk senior Eddie Conroy crossed a free kick from the right end line to the far post, where Lynch headed it home at 58:41. However, the hosts were able to fire off only two other shots in the half, with neither reaching the net, including senior Zach Heckt having a bid blocked that led to a fruitless corner kick sequence in the 84th minute.

After playing five of its first six games away from home, Saint Michael's hosts its next two, beginning by opposing 17th-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Panthers' national ranking is according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), and they also sit third in the East Region poll. Adelphi qualified for last year's NCAA Tournament.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Despite a combined 27 kills from juniors Annika Schwartz and Lauren Weaver, the Stevenson University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Marymount (Va.) University Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium. The set scores were 25-22, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23.

The loss snapped a 13-match home win streak for the Mustangs.

For Stevenson (9-7), Schwartz finished with 14 kills and 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Weaver hit .333 for the contest en route to 13 kills, while sophomore Moriah Savage added nine kills and senior Kristen Brooks eight to go along with 15 digs. Junior Deanna Bradbury had 19 digs. Senior Sara Bollinger notched 22 assists, with freshman Julie Nightwine adding 21.

Marymount (8-4) was led by Margaret McAlpin's 16 kills, while Cailyn Thomas added 11.

Trailing 2-0, the Mustangs forced a fourth set with a 25-21 win in the third frame. The set was tied 8-8 when Stevenson scored 10 of the next 12 points to open up an 18-10 lead. Schwartz had a pair of kills in the run while the Mustangs took advantage of six Saint errors. The guests cut the lead to 21-18, but that was as close as they would come as the set was closed out by a kill by freshman Victoria Prokic.

Marymount jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the fourth set before four straight Mustang points made it 9-6 following a block by Brooks and senior Kelsey Stave. The Saints pushed the lead back to 13-7 before Stevenson started to again chip away, using three straight points to tie the set 19-19 on a Marymount attack error. From there, the two teams were tied four more times. Stevenson led 23-22 when a service error, an attack error and a McAlpin kill closed out the match for Marymount.

The Saints opened up an 11-5 lead in the first set, but Stevenson scored seven of the next nine points to pull within 13-12 on back-to-back Weaver kills. The Mustangs were down 19-15 when they reeled off five straight points to take a 20-19 lead on a kill by Savage. Marymount scored the next two points to take a 21-20 lead, and although the set was tied two more times, the guests scored the final three points to take a 1-0 lead.

Marymount led 15-10 in the second set before a 9-4 run by the hosts pulled Stevenson within one, 20-19, on a block by Schwartz and Prokic. The Saints led 24-23 and were serving for set point when a Brooks kill tied the set 24-24, but kills by Thomas and Emily Abramaitys sealed the set for Marymount.

Stevenson hit at a .181 clip while holding Marymount to .169 hitting, but the Saints had eight service aces to two for the Mustangs.

Stevenson returns to action Saturday when it travels to Lycoming for a Middle Atlantic Conference tri-match. The Mustangs face the host Warriors at 1:00 pm, followed by a league match against Hood College at 3:00.

SUBJECT: Five Set Thriller Goes in Favor of Philadelphia in Matchup of CACC Rivals

DATE: September 21, 2016

NEWARK, Del. - - The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Preseason Poll had Wilmington University and Philadelphia as one and two, respectively, in the South Division and if Wednesday night was a test of knowledge, the coaches were right.

In a back and forth fight, the Rams (10-3, 3-0 CACC) came out on top, 3-2, in the first of two meetings against the Wildcats (4-7, 1-1 CACC) this season.

Set scores for the Wildcats for the match were 25-21, 19-25, 25-27, 25-22, and 11-15.

Trailing 14-10 in the opening set, the Wildcats went on a 8-1 run to turn the game into an 18-15 advantage. Still leading 20-18, Rebecca Rawlinson put down a kill before an attack error put the Wildcats up 22-18. Another kill from Rawlinson and a kill by Jill Braunsberg gave the home team set point. Out of a timeout, the Rams’ service went into the net giving the game to the Wildcats.

The Rams turned their game around in the second, sprinting out to a 14-4 lead. The Wildcats fought back with an 8-3 run, but the Rams rattled off three straight points to extend their lead to 20-12. The Wildcats saved four set points, but it was too much to overcome as the Rams evened the match, 25-19.

The third set was a back and forth affair. The Rams looked to take momentum at 19-14, but the Wildcats went on a 6-1 run, tying the match at 20-20 with a block from Rawlinson and Megan Ward. The Rams answered with a 4-1 run of their own, looking at set point and a 2-1 lead. But a Rawlinson kill kept the Wildcats alive before Allison Briley served up three straight points. A Ram Attack error gave the home team set point, 25-24. But the Rams battled back once again, getting a kill, a Wildcat attack error, and another kill to take the set, 27-25.

Tied 11-11 in the fourth set, the Wildcats scored three consecutive points to lead 14-11, getting a big solo block from Eile Harris on the last point. The Wildcats were able to stay ahead of the Rams throughout the game, and pulled away with three straight points when leading 21-20. Another block by Harris and Emma Kongevold put the Cats up 23-20 before an attack error gave the home team set points, 24-20. The Rams scored twice but Harris kept the Wildcats alive with a kill, forcing a fifth set, 25-22.

After scoring the first point in the fifth, the Wildcats found themselves down 4-1 after the Rams picked up two kills, a block, and an ace. Another 4-0 run put the Rams ahead 9-4 before the Wildcats made their move. Briley started a 5-0 run with a kill before Jenna Brown collected back-to-back aces. Briley ended the run with a kill, tying the match, 9-9. But the Rams stemmed the tide and regained the lead. The closest the Wildcats would get the rest of the way would be 11-10. The Rams scored three straight to lead 14-10 before finishing off the match, 15-11.

Braunsberg was a kill away from a triple-double for the Wildcats, collecting nine kills, 18 assists, and 18 digs. Briley led the team with 12 kills and 11 digs while Rawlinson finished with a team high 14.5 points, collecting eight kills, four aces, three block assists and a solo block. Harris added seven kills, four block assists, and her lone solo block.

Miranda Shaw also dished out 18 assists while adding 11 sigs for the double-double. Braunsberg 18 digs led the way but Addalyn Flores picked up 15 digs while Brown chipped in with nine.

The Wildcats remain in CACC play at the WU Athletics Complex this weekend, as they host Concordia on Saturday. The matinee match is slated for a 12:00 p.m. first service.

Wed, September 21, 2016
Dover, Del. (Sep. 21, 2016) --- Marist scored three goals in a three-minute span of the first period and en route to a 7-1 women’s soccer victory over Delaware State at Alumni Stadium Wednesday evening.

The victory was the fourth of the season for Marist (4-5), while the Hornets fell to 2-6.

Keri Bradley and Camille Bowen scored three goals each to lead the Red Foxes. Bowen also recorded an assist, while Bianca Furci had two helpers for the visitors.

Junior Kalyn Fauntleroy tallied her first career goal in the second period to account for the DSU scoring.

Marist scored first when Bradley scored off a feed from Burci in the 13th minute. It was déjà vu a little more than two minutes later (15th minute) when Furci fed Bradley for the second goal of the match to give the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead.

Marist scored again less than a minute later on a goal by Brianna Robinson to open up a 3-0 lead. The Foxes pulled ahead 4-0 on Bowen’s first goal of the match in the final minute of the opening period.

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team fell in a Northeast-10 Conference contest against nationally-ranked Adelphi University, 2-0, on Saturday at Duffy Field. The Purple Knights fall to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in NE-10 play. The Panthers, who qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season, move to 6-1 and 4-0 with the win. Adelphi is ranked No. 17 in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll, and was also spotted third in the East Region poll.

First-year goalkeeper Gabriel Pineda (Miami, Fla./Immaculata-La Salle) made four first-half saves in a losing effort for the Purple Knights. Junior goalkeeper Daniel du Feu (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) subbed in at halftime and recorded one save.

For Adelphi, junior Florent Girardin and sophomore James Thristino registered tallies, while juniors Federico De Oliveira and Joey Sanchez had assists. Senior goalkeeper Spenser Powell made five saves on his way to a clean sheet for the Panthers.

Adelphi created a scoring chance early when Thristino made firm contact with his head on a cross sent to the right side of goal, and his redirection forced Pineda to make a diving stop in the second minute. The game remained scoreless until 16:04 when Girardin received a pass from Sanchez in the center of the box. With no one but the keeper to beat, Girardin launched a shot into the upper left corner of the goal to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

The Purple Knights had a quick flurry of scoring chances during a 14-second span in the 30th minute, ringing the crossbar once and having a pair of shots denied by Powell. In the 31st minute senior Aaron DaCosta (Newark, Del./Archmere Academy) got his head on the end of a cross. His redirection toward goal was tipped over the crossbar by Powell, who got his finger tips on the ball at the very last moment to make the save and force a corner kick. The Purple Knights were unable to take advantage of the set piece, and the teams went into halftime with the score remaining at 1-0.

The majority of the second half for Saint Michael's was spent in its defensive end, as it worked to dispel pressure from Adelphi's forwards, as the Panthers fired 12 shots, but only two on goal, and registered nine corner kicks. The Purple Knights' lone opportunity to tie came off the head of sophomore Bradley Anair (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) in the 74th minute, but Powell made the save. At 76:24 the Panthers broke through for their second goal when De Oliveira played a through ball to Thristino at the top of the box. Thristino gathered the ball before sending a shot past du Feu and into the right side of the goal, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead. In the last 13 minutes, the Purple Knights were unable to generate another attempt on goal.

The Purple Knights are set to face the University of New Haven, another NE-10 foe, on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. on Duffy Field.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis team took four of the six singles matches to comeback and defeat Chestnut Hill, 5-4, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the CHC Tennis Courts.

The Wildcats (4-2, 3-1 CACC) took a big step in the direction of reaching the CACC Tournament on Saturday, as Chestnut Hill (0-5, 0-5 CACC) was the 2015 CACC Tournament Runner Ups.

Begona Gomar and Laura Gil salvaged the double matches by coming back from a 6-1 deficit to win 9-7 at number one doubles. But Chestnut Hill went into the singles matches with a 2-1 lead by taking the number two and number three matchups.

Gomar and Gil carried the momentum into their singles matches as Gomar swept the number two singles match, 6-0 and 6-0. Gil had a little more difficulty at number three singles, but still swept her opponent, 6-3 and 6-3.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Does it Again With 2-0 Victory at Bloomfield

Goldey-Beacom continued its first-half dominance with a pair of goals and stayed red-hot with a 2-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Bloomfield in Bloomfield, NJ.

Senior Courtney Casterlin (Chenango Forks, NY) got her first start of the season and made it count with her second career goal, which both have been game-winning tallies. She received a pass from junior Amy Runciman (Luton, England) and scored in the ninth minute to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead.

For Runciman, her 19 career assists already had her second in school history and her 49 points are just two behind Kelli Parsons (2003-06) for fifth place.

The margin grew to 2-0 in the 33rd minute when sophomore Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) converted on a penalty kick for her second goal of the season and eighth career.

Of the 15-6 scoring edge the Lightning have enjoyed this season, they have outscored their opponents 10-1 in the first half. Last season, GBC had a 22-19 advantage over the first 45 minutes of its games.

Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ) attempted three shots and fellow senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX), who joined Runciman on the CACC Weekly Honor Roll, made five saves for the Lightning. GBC (6-2, 3-1 CACC) has won its last three meetings with Bloomfield by a combined 11-0 and now sit tied for fourth place in the league with Wilmington (DE).

Adeline Argabrite came up with seven saves for the Bears (0-7, 0-4).

SUBJECT: HARRIS’ STRONG PLAY AT THE NET LEADS VOLLEYBALL TO SWEEP OF CONCORDIA

DATE: September 24, 2016
eth

NEWARK, DEL - - Wilmington used solid play at the net to power itself to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Clippers of Concordia College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference volleyball action at the WU Athletics complex on Saturday afternoon.

Set scores for the match were 25-13, 25-20, and 25-15.

The Wildcats (5-7, 2-1 CACC) out-blocked Concordia 7-1, and used a 9-3 service ace advantage to lead the charge. Wilmington hit .312 for the match, compared to just .059 for the Clippers.

The first set started with a bit of back-and-forth action before an Eile Harris kill at 6-5 led the hosts on a 6-2 spurt. That run was bookended by a kill from Megan Ward, and gave Wilmington a 12-7 lead. Concordia would not get any closer than six points down the stretch, as the ‘Cats ran off the set’s last five points to take the 25-13 victory.

It was all Wilmington early in the second set, as the home team jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead cemented by a kill from Emma Kongevold. The lead grew to 16-9 in favor of the Wildcats, courtesy of an attack error from the Clippers. Concordia showed fight, battling back on a run of seven straight points, using a pair of kills from Michelle Klimas, to tie the game at 16-16. Two kills by Kongevold , coupled with two straight Clipper attack errors, allowed Wilmington to run off seven straight points of their own and take a 24-17 lead. The Clippers fought off three straight match points, before a Kongevold kill ended the rally and gave the hosts the 25-20 victory.

Concordia continued to keep the pressure on in the third set, as the teams remained within three points of each other until an attack error from the Clippers gave the Wildcats a 14-10 lead. The visitors still battled, and got within three again after a kill from Kiakahi Violetti closed the deficit to 16-13. Wilmington turned it on, using a strong serving run from Rebecca Rawlinson. The ‘Cats closed out the match on a 9-3 run to take the 25-16 victory and complete the three-set sweep.

Harris led the way for the Wildcats, posting six kills, five blocks, and hit an astounding .667 for the match. Jill Braunsberg added eight kills, 13 assists, and seven digs, while Kongevold chipped in with seven kills. Miranda Shaw dished out 14 assists, while Flores had a team-high 13 digs. Rawlinson served up four aces, while Allison Briley notched six kills and 12 digs for the home team.

Wilmington remains in CACC play next week, as they hit the road on Tuesday to take on the University of Sciences on Tuesday evening. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
