FH: 2016 Field Hockey Season Preview
Wolves open the 2016 Season Sept. 3 at Millersville
NEWBERRY – The Wolves return the top two scorers from a season ago and welcome 14 newcomers for head coach Anne Kietzman’s first season with Newberry. The Wolves, who are picked to finish fifth in ECAC, are looking to improve on last year’s conference semifinals appearance.

Kietzman enters her first season as the Wolves' head coach after successful run as an assistant and interim head coach at Dickinson College. She had an outstanding playing career at William Smith College, earning National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III All-America honors as a senior.

Newberry will host 10 home matches at Setzler Field, as well as the postseason ECAC Tournament for the first time in program history. Kietzman is energized about the opportunity hosting the conference's top four teams Nov. 4-6 affords Newberry. “It’s definitely an exciting thing for our campus a community and gives us the opportunity to bring some quality field hockey to our backyard,” remarked Kietzman.

The Wolves will see their first full senior class play their final season in the scarlet and gray, as the program's foundational players are in their fourth season.

As the southernmost field hockey program in the nation, the Wolves are now also one of the more experienced teams in the region with the addition of Belmont Abbey and Queens to the schedule.

Newberry returns its top two scorers from last season as twins Courtlyn and Caitlyn Warren look to lead a young Wolves squad in 2016. Courtlyn led the team with 17 points (8G-1A), while Caitlyn posted 11 points (5G-1A) last season to lead the way on offense. Both players are ranked in the top two in all-time career goals scored at Newberry.

Kietzman finds experience to be plentiful in the returning players. “We are really excited about the strength we are returning in the backfield and in the net. Olivia Fraunfelter, Talya Stocksdale and Katherine Thompson along with Dakota Elzy in goal are all veteran leaders that we expect to make huge contributions in the backfield along with Mariah Lee,” said Kietzman.

Courtlyn Warren and Amber Singer are also talented options at back that we expect to utilize throughout the season. Maia Lee and Alyssa Kessler also show potential in the backfield and deepen our prospects on defense. We have some depth in the cage as well, returning Allison Davis and adding Meghan MacIntyre to the roster,” Kietzman replied.

Elzy returns in net after starting 16 games as a sophomore and logging over 1,000 minutes on the season. Davis is also returning after starting two games as a freshman, posting 14 saves over six contests.

Lots of additions also figure to fight for starting sports in the lineup this season, with 14 players added to the roster.

“We have a lot of exciting newcomers and we are expecting them to really stand out in our midfield and on the attack. Kristyna Oyola has already made a big impact on our midfield in preseason scrimmages and is really clicking along with fellow rookie Elise Utne. Our midfield is going to be very robust this year with the addition of Jessica Cooke, Kayla Cooke and Shannon Springer. They are all true utility players that we can plug in almost anywhere on the midfield or attacking lines to increase the pace of play,” said Kietzman.

“Our attack will also feature some new faces as Meghan Jolikko and Brady Keeler are really meshing together well, creating an attacking combination with some truly lethal speed! Gabby Bazemore and Haley Smith have also proven to have a nose for goal and will give us additional options on attack along with Alex Gadson,” replied Kietzman.

Seven of the first eight games of the season will be played on the road, but Newberry will finish the year playing nine of their last 10 contests at Setzler Field. The Wolves will begin ECAC play on Sept. 14 against league newcomer Belmont Abbey. Newberry will close out the season with four straight ECAC contests.

Kietzman highlighted the importance of the final four ECAC matches. “The beginning of our schedule has some tough away matches, but I think what we are most excited for is the string of ECAC home games in the second half of our season. We are excited to be in front of our home crowd and back in the South Carolina sun for the season’s critical games,” Kietzman stated.

Increased roster size looks to be a strength for the Wolves this season. “I am really excited with the depth and energy we have on our bench. It has been nearly impossible to pick a starting 11 with this group but for a really good reason- we have so many players with the ability to contribute on the field. So you can expect a lot more substitutions this fall- something this young program has not had the luxury of doing in the past,” replied Kietzman.

Kietzman also expects to grow with such a young roster. “While I certainly expect some growing pains in my first year with this group I think we have a great deal of potential. We have been talking frequently about pushing our limits and being open to taking risks and embracing change and the energy of these young women at every practice, lift and meeting has been truly incredible. I can’t wait to see where this season takes us and for us to become a fully realized team,” said Keitzman.

The Wolves open their 2016 season on Saturday, Sept. 3 at Millersville.

Newark, Del. (Sep. 1, 2016) --- Delaware rushed for 395 yards and five touchdowns, and benefitted from six Delaware State turnovers in a 56-14 win over the Hornets in the season opener for both teams at UD’s Tubby Raymond Field this evening. The Hens improved to 7-0 in the series between the state’s two Division I football programs since the teams met for the first time in the 2007 NCAA playoffs.

Delaware’s Wes Hills rushed for a career-high 212 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, while Thomas Jefferson ran for 70 yards on 13 attempts and Jalen Randolph added 55 rushing yards and two scores on 11 tries.

Blue Hen quarterback Joe Walker completed six-of-nine passes for 66 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 39 yards and a score.

Delaware State wide receiver Mason Rutherford, a transfer from San Bernardino JC (Cal.), caught six passes for a game-high 83 yards and a touchdown in his Hornet debut before leaving the game due on an injury on a punt return in the fourth quarter.

The Hornets used both newcomer Daniel Epperson (jr.) and Kobie Lain (so.) at the quarterback in the contest. Epperson, also a San Bernardino JC transfer, started the game. He completed 13 of 26 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns, but threw four interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown.

“It’s tough to beat anybody when you can’t stop the run and commit six turnovers,” said Delaware State second-year head coach Kenny Carter. “Delaware had the two long drives early in the game, and then came the turnovers. We continued to battle throughout, and I believe we did some good things to build on this season.”

The six turnovers were the most by the Hornets since committing seven, including six interceptions, in a 42-6 loss at Hampton in 2011.

Randolph capped off a 10-play, 74-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give Delaware the lead on the opening possession of the game.

After the Hornets, went three-and-out on their first possession, the Hens drove 48 yards on 11 plays in a more than six minute possession for their second touchdown. Walker capped off the drive with a one-yard score on a keeper.

Delaware added two second quarter touchdowns, on runs of 59 and 13 yards by Hills, to take a 28-0 lead at the half.

The Hornets trailed 42-0 before finally getting on the board.

Epperson and Rutherford connected on a six-yard touchdown pass to cap off a six-play, 75-yard drive midway through the third quarter.

Brycen Alleyne had a 22-yard run and the Hornets benefitted from two Delaware pass interference penalties during the drive. Wisdom Nzidee’s extra point kick cut UD’s lead to 42-7 with 7:18 left in the third quarter.

A 50-yard kickoff return by Alleyne following Delaware’s seventh touchdown set up the Hornets’ second scoring drive. Alleyne capped off the drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Epperson in the fourth quarter. Epperson completed first down passes to Rutherford and Aris Scott during the march.

Alleyne had 194 all-purpose yards in the game, including 141 on five kickoff returns. He also returned a kickoff 47 yards in the game. The former Concord HS (Del.) star also had four catches for 26 yards and 27 rushing yards on eight carries.

The Hornets return to action on Sep. 10 for the home opener against Monmouth. The Hall-of-Fame Day contest is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

STINGERS
Lain completed each of his two pass attempts for 31 yards … Scott had two receptions for 31 yards to surpass the 1,000 mark at DSU (1, 019) … freshman punter Fide Romo-Martinez averaged 40.7 yards on six kicks, with a long of 53 on his first collegiate boot … Hornet safety Logan Wescott led all players with 14 tackles, including eight solo stops … Delaware had just one turnover in the game when Hornet linebacker Kameron Rogers (jr.) recovered a fumble by Thomas Jefferson … the Hornets tallied just 35 net yards rushing in the contest, which included 23 yards lost as a result of Delaware sacks.

Sophomores Kayleigh Leschinski and Samantha Bahr scored second period goals, and Michele Lammers recorded eight saves for her sixth career shutout to highlight the Hornet win.

The match was scoreless until Bahr assisted on Leschinski’s first career goal on a shot past Wagner goal-keeper Katie Viscardi in the 52nd minute. Leschinski’s goal, on a rebound a yard from the net, was also the first of the season for the Hornets. The assist was the second of Bahr’s career.

Less than five minutes later, the Hornets added some insurance when Bahr was the beneficiary of a feed from Samantha Wanzor for her second career goal. The score occurred shortly after a corner kick from DSU’s Jasmine Warren. Wanzor, a freshman, collected her first career save.

Lammers was brilliant in the net, recording five saves in the first period. Wagner outshot the Hornets 9-6 in the opening period.

Lammers added three moves saves in the second period to keep the Seahawks off the board.

Ueberroth and Golden Bears with Memorable Season-Opening Victory on Saturday

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Saturday will be a memorable day for the Kutztown University field hockey team. Not only did the ninth-ranked Golden Bears look sharp in a 2-0 win over Saint Anselm on their home turf at Andre Reed Stadium, senior captain Courtney Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) scored on a day that holds strong significance to her and her family.

Five years ago in 2011, the Ueberroth family lost a husband and a father. Courtney and her three siblings unexpectedly lost their father on that fateful day. Her older brother, Kyle, was in the midst of competing with the Golden Bear football team in Massachusetts at the time - coincidentally, being part of a KU victory over Saint Anselm, the same as Courtney on Saturday.

While losing a parent at such a young ago can leave a scar that could never be healed, Ueberroth's Golden Bear family gave her a celebratory experience to remember on Saturday.

If a special song played pre-game that Courtney and her father shared wasn't enough, her second-half goal to give KU a 2-0 lead brought out excitement up and down the sidelines and into the stands.

Fellow senior Megan Tiwold (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) hooked Ueberroth up with the assist on the insurance goal. After a scoreless first half, junior Madison Stewart (New Castle, Del./William Penn) gave KU the lead shortly after the break on an impressive solo-effort to the right side of the cage. Stewart was KU's most active attacker Saturday, putting six of her game-high eight shots on-goal.

As good as the KU offense was with a 17-12 lead in shots, the defense stood its ground all game to open the season with a shutout. The backline of Jessica Strohecker (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry), Morgan Aldinger (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) were aggressive and forced multiple takeaways from the Hawks (0-1).

Goalkeeper Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) captained the defensive effort with her first career shutout. She made a career-high 10 saves - all in her first career start as a team captain.

Kutztown remains at Andre Reed Stadium for a special holiday game on Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 5. Action against Assumption College begins at 12 p.m.

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Aaron DaCosta (Newark, Del./Archmere Academy) scored in the 85th minute for the only goal on Saturday, and the Saint Michael's College men's soccer team wrapped up its second Catholic Cup title in four years by blanking Stonehill College, 1-0, in the championship game at Saint Anselm College's Melucci Field. Senior back Nolan Villeneuve (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) was named tournament MVP.

Now 2-0, the Purple Knights had also defeated the Skyhawks for the crown in the 2014 title tilt. Stonehill slips to 1-1, with its three-game winning streak in the series coming to an end. In the consolation game, Saint Anselm tipped Assumption College, 2-1 in overtime.

DaCosta, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored the winner on Saturday after picking up two assists on Friday. With 37 career points, he is three short of the program's all-time top 10. In his first appearance of the season, junior Daniel du Feu (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) made a career-high eight saves for his second career shutout, making four stops in each half to stifle a Stonehill squad that held a 21-9 advantage in shots. Junior Conor McDonough made two saves for the Skyhawks.

In addition to DaCosta and Villeneuve being named all-tournament, sophomore Cole McIntire (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) and Brady Channell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) earned nods to the squad. Head coach Wade Jean, who on Friday became the third coach in program history with 50 wins and owns the mark for winning percentage, moved into second place in school annals with his team's triumph on Saturday, pushing his total to 51.

After Saint Michael's fired off the first three shots and two corner kicks of the game, du Feu denied a pair of Skyhawk bids in the 10th and 16th minutes to keep the contest scoreless, as Stonehill ended the half with a 12-4 advantage in shots. The teams stood scoreless at halftime.

The Purple Knights had an opportunity early in the second stanza, but first-year Justin D'Orlando's (Middleton, Mass./Bridgton Academy) shot was turned away in the 51st minute. During a 63rd-minute corner kick sequence, first-year Jacob von Giebel (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) had a header stopped by McDonough, and DaCosta sent a follow-up try high of the target. Du Feu followed with three stops of his own in a 6:33 span, including stopping junior Adam Branco on back-to-back shots in the 70th and 71st minutes.

Du Feu turned away another Branco header in the 83rd minute, and the Purple Knights broke through with the lone goal less than three minutes later. Following a foul at midfield, first-year Nico Bared (Miami, Fla./Immaculata-La Salle) sent the ensuing free kick toward the box, and DaCosta volleyed the ball home at the back post at 84:59. That proved to be the final shot of the game.

The Purple Knights rest until next Saturday, when they visit Queens (N.Y.) College at 11:30 a.m.

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton football team dropped its season-opening game to Plymouth St. on Saturday afternoon, falling by a final score of 20-7 at Spartan Stadium.

It was a tale of two halves, as the Spartans took a 7-6 lead into the break, but were outscored 14-0 in the second half. Soren Pelz-Walsh had the team's only touchdown of the day on a 17-yard reception from Nick Boles in the first quarter. Darren Callan had a career-high in tackles, recording 19 stops in the defeat. Moe Harris averaged 4.6 yards per carry on the ground, getting the ball 11 times for 51 yards.

For Plymouth, Blair Zentek was seemingly everywhere, intercepting two passes and recovering a fumble to go along with three tackles. David Hamilton led the way on the ground for the Panthers, rushing for 65 yards with a touchdown. Zach Edwards was 14-for-22 passing in the game, recording 157 yards and a touchdown.

Plymouth St. won the first down battle, moving the chains 18 times to Castleton's 14. The Panthers also dominated the ground game, gaining 151 rushing yards as a team while Castleton mustered only 49 yards. Overall, Plymouth St. out-gained Castleton 308-182 offensively.

Plymouth got out to an early lead, scoring on its opening drive. A key third-down conversion on a reception by Mitch Banuskevich went for 27 yards, and after a personal foul was tacked on to the end of the run the Panthers had the ball deep in Castleton territory. Six consecutive rushing plays ended with Banuskevich breaking it outside for a walk-in touchdown to give the visitors a 6-0 lead.

Castleton answered back with 1:11 left in the first quarter, taking a 7-6 lead after a 10-play drive that spanned 4:15. Nick Boles went 7-for-8 on the drive, capping it off with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Pelz-Walsh. Pelz-Walsh had five catches on the drive, including one for a first-down conversion to keep the drive alive prior to his score.

The Spartans forced a quick three-and-out to end the first quarter, taking over with the ball in Plymouth territory after 22-yard punt return by Joe DeAlesandro down the right sideline. Castleton couldn't convert the field position into point, putting up a three-and-out of its own.

The Spartan defense was holding strong late in the second quarter, forcing Plymouth to punt for the third consecutive drive. Ryan Waldecker sent a ball end-over-end down field, but before it could be downed it deflected off the back of a Castleton blocker and was recovered by Zentek to give the Panthers the ball inside the red zone at the 20-yard line. After making three stops to force a field goal attempt, Jeff Madden missed his 31-yard attempt to keep the score at 7-6.

Coming out of the break, a Spartan drive stalled after six plays resulting in a punt by Pat Powers that went for a touchback. Edwards and the Panthers then manufactured an eight-play, 80-yard drive to take their first lead since early in the first quarter. On second down, Edwards found Chris Kelly wide open for a 37-yard score, followed by a converted extra point, to make it a 13-7 game in favor of the visitors.

Two plays after the Panther touchdown, Boles was picked off by Zentek to give Plymouth the ball in prime territory at the Castleton 42-yard line. Five plays moved the ball up to the Castleton 13-yard line, but a botched snap by Edwards gave the Spartans the ball back when Allen Justice scooped it up for Castleton.

Another costly turnover by the Spartans led to Plymouth's third touchdown of the day, as the Panthers used nine plays to cover 31 yards over 4:20 of game time. The drive was capped off with a three-yard touchdown run by Hamilton, followed by an extra point by Madden to give the game a score of 20-7.

The ensuing drive by Castleton returned hope to the team, as they moved the ball deep into the Plymouth St. end of the field. A pair of third-down conversions kept the drive alive before Harris sprung a 16-yard run down to the Plymouth 10-yard line. A fourth-down field goal attempt turned chaotic, as a bad snap led to an interception thrown by Castleton kicker Ryan Payne. An ensuing personal foul gave the Panthers the ball at their own 19-yard line. Neither offense could muster anything else the remainder of the way, allowing time to expire with the score still at 20-7.

The Spartans will travel to Fitchburg St. next Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.

SUBJECT: First Half Goal Stands as Wilmington Women’s Soccer Opens 2016 with 1-0 Victory at Roberts Wesleyan

DATE: September 3, 2016
djl

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - - A first half goal holds for the Wilmington University women’s soccer team as it took down East Region power Roberts Wesleyan, 1-0, in the 2016 season opener on Saturday afternoon at RWC Stadium.

The win was only the second nonconference victory for the Wildcats since the 2011 season. Roberts Wesleyan advanced to the NCAA East Regional Tournament a season ago.

The Wildcats (1-0) made the most of their opportunities and scored in the 22nd minute of the game, despite being out shot by the Redhawks (0-2), 15-5, in the match.

A combination of newcomers was the key for the Wildcats, as a cross from Kelly Robbins found the head of Teigha Ward inside the six-yard box for the lone mark of the game.

Goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams made three saves for her first shutout of the season and also had the help of a netminder’s best friend, as the Redhawks hit the crossbar just 10:05 into the match.

The Wildcats earned more corners, 4-2, including three in the first half, but were outshot in the match 15-5, including 11-3 in the second half.

Ward and freshman Laura van Steveninck recorded two shots apiece while van Steveninck put both on frame to lead the team.

The Wildcats return to Newark to begin their 2016 home slate on Monday, as they face another NCAA East Regional Tournament opponent in Saint Rose. The opening whistle is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.

Hamden, Conn. (Sep. 4, 2016) ---Delaware State scored on two of its three shots on goal, but it was not enough in a 6-2 loss at Quinnipiac to wrap up a two-match road swing this afternoon. The Hornets split the two contests to stand at 1-4 this season, while Quinnipiac improved to 3-1-1.

The Bobcats scored two goals in the first 10 minutes to key today’s win. Sarah Pandolfi had two goals and an assist to lead Quinnipiac.

Kayleigh Leschinski (so.) scored for the second straight match and Savannah Taylor (so.) notched her second career goal to account for DSU’s scoring.

The Bobcats pulled ahead 2-0 on a goal by Jess Fontaine in the 10th minute.

Delaware State got on the board when Leschinski scored on a free kick from 25 yards out in the 12th minute. She now has two career goals, one in each of the last two matches.

Quinnipiac answered with two straight goals, including Pandolfi’s first of the match, to open up a 4-1 lead.

The Hornets scored again in the 35th minute when Toni Washington assisted on Taylor’s goal, a left-footed shot past Bobcat keeper Charlotte Edmunds, to pull to within 4-2.

Pandolfi scored her second goal in the first two minutes of the second period to give Quinnipiac a 5-2 lead.

The Bobcats closed out the scoring in a goal by Katrina Friedman in the 76th minute.

Delaware State has scored four goals in the last two contests.

DARDEN, MILLER EARN MAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

ANNVILLE (PA) – Delaware Valley University sophomore quarterback Dashawn Darden (Norristown, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) and junior safety Shawn Miller (Laurel, DE/Laurel) were selected as the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week respectively for their standout performances in the Aggies’ 21-14 upset of seventh-ranked Wesley College on September 2.

Two of his picks came in the fourth quarter, including one in the end zone to preserve the team’s seven-point lead. Miller also added a sack and a pass breakup in the contest.

SUBJECT: Strong Second Half Not Enough for Wilmington Women’s Soccer as Saint Rose Claims 2016 Home Opener, 2-0

DATE: September 5, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s soccer team out shot Saint Rose in the second half, but couldn’t find the back of the net as the Golden Knights clipped the Wildcats, 2-0, on Labor Day at the WU Athletics Complex.

A pair of goals in a six-minute span in the first half gave the Golden Knights (3-0) the advantage, but the Wildcats (1-1) charged back with six shots in the second to put the pressure on East Region Power Knights. Saint Rose received votes in the NSCAA Division II National Preseason Poll a couple weeks ago.

The first half was predominately controlled by the Golden Knights, leading in shots, 9-1. The visitors broke through in the 21st minute, converting on a corner kick opportunity, headed in by Elisa Galbiati in the middle of the goalmouth. Just over five minutes later, Morgan Burchhardt made it a two goal advantage with a breakaway opportunity just 25:49 into the match.

After the break, the Wildcats came out and produced the first four shots of the second half. Two of the four shots were on frame, making substitute goalkeeper Madison Taylor record the saves.

Loran Wyrough produced one of the better opportunities for the Wildcats in the second half, getting behind the defense in the 50th minute. Wyrough’s toe-poke trickled wide right to keep the score at a 2-0 deficit.

Rebecca Dolhansky led the Wildcats with three shots and two shots on goal while Wyrough added a pair of shots. Kierstyn Williams recorded five saves in the loss.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday as they open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on the road at Dominican. The opening whistle is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College men's soccer senior Aaron DaCosta (Newark, Del./Archmere Academy), junior Daniel du Feu (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) and sophomore Cole McIntire (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) were all named to the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending on Sunday, September 4. DaCosta nabbed the fourth weekly accolade of his career, while du Feu and McIntire were lauded for the first time.

DaCosta had one goal and two assists while helping Saint Michael's go 2-0 and win the Catholic Cup over the weekend for the second time in three years. In a 4-3 win against Assumption College on Friday, he handed out two assists, both in the final 28:41, including assisting the tie-breaking winner with 9:42 remaining. During a 1-0 win in the final versus Stonehill College on Saturday, DaCosta netted the game's lone goal in the 85th minute. He landed on the all-tournament team and is currently tied for the league lead with two assists.

With 37 career points, DaCosta is three short of the program's all-time top 10. He has 14 goals and nine assists, leaving him one and two shy, respectively, of joining the top 10 in those categories.

Du Feu recorded a career-high eight saves to backstop Saint Michael's to a 1-0 victory over Stonehill on Saturday to clinch the Catholic Cup title in his only contest of the week. It was the second clean sheet in five career starts for du Feu, whose first season of college soccer was last fall. He leads the NE-10 in saves per game.

McIntire scored twice during the Catholic Cup, landing on the all-tournament team. In the 4-3 victory against Assumption, McIntire scored in the 33rd and 62nd minutes to make it 3-1 in the eventual win. McIntire has already matched his goal total from last year, which was achieved in nine contests.

The Purple Knights visit Queens (N.Y.) College on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University field hockey team earned its second home victory of the season Tuesday afternoon with a 7-2 win over McDaniel.

The Hornets (7-2) peppered the Green Terror (1-2) goal with 12 first-half shots on their way to a 3-0 lead at the break. Senior Taylor Little put the hosts on top to stay with her unassisted goal just 47 seconds in while Kayla Alderman and Maddie Lamarca scored just 26 seconds apart in the 31st minute.

Lamarca's goal, off of an Elizabeth Pardo assist, proved to be the game-winner.

Maddie Price made it 4-0 with an unassisted goal 12:22 into the second half before McDaniel got on the board in the 53rd minute.

Shenandoah then cruised home to the win by scoring three of the game's final four goals. Katelyn Curtis, Morgan Payne and Sarah Reed all scored with Little and Pardo registering assists on Payne's and Reed's goals, respectively.

SU outshot the Terror 19-12 and had an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Jenna Rampale had five saves in playing the final 35 minutes.

The seven goals scored is the greatest offensive output since an 8-0 win over Hood on September 3, 2013. The Hornets had played 57 games since that blowout victory.

Shenandoah is back in action on Saturday at noon versus York (Pa.).

Goldey-Beacom's Volleyball team opened the 2016 season with a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-12, 25-13) at Bowie State. Jada Canteen recorded 12 kills, Grace McCarthy had 10 and Olivia Florence dished 35 assists.

Sophie Woods’ Goal Lifts Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer to Double OT Win at Chowan

Sophomore Sophie Woods (Manchester, England) took a pass from freshman Kiera Young (Aberdeen, MD) in the 104th minute and scored in helping Goldey-Beacom to a 2-1 victory at Chowan in Murfreesboro, NC.

The goal was worth the wait as the match’s tap was delayed 80 minutes by rain. When the curtain lowered 3:06 into the second overtime, Woods had her first goal for GBC and Young had her first collegiate point for their squad’s first 2-0 start since 2002.

The win was well deserved, especially since GBC held a 26-3 shots edge that included 20-0 after halftime. The Lightning also had a 12-1 advantage in shots on cage.

But it was Chowan who had the upper hand early, getting a penalty-kick goal from Kimberly Surio for a 1-0 contest. Junior Natalie Waltz (Leola, PA) changed that in the 37th minute when she scored off a breakaway for her first collegiate goal.

Woods and senior Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ) each had four shots for the Lightning and senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) played all 103 minutes without having to make a save.

Olivia Borer came up with 10 saves for Chowan (1-2).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday visits Nyack in its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team. The women’s game starts at noon, which precedes the men’s 2:30 pm contest.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Falls, 4-3, to Saint Thomas Aquinas

Goldey-Beacom found itself locked in a physical encounter with Saint Thomas Aquinas and came up on the wrong end of a 4-3 decision at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The Spartans grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when Luis Morales converted a penalty kick. Junior Declyn Brown (Glasgow, Scotland) came right back for the Lightning, taking a back-heel pass from sophomore Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) and tallying in the 15th minute for a level contest.

STAC regained the lead, 2-1, in the 23rd minute when Charlie Crane knocked the ball down with his body and fed Christian Jones, who banged it home.

GBC then scored twice in just over three minutes for a 3-2 lead. Senior Joe Traynor (Warminster, PA) put home the initial shot from junior Lorenzo Gama (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) in the 68th minute and Alvaro Martinez (Zaragoza, Spain) then directed in a corner kick from fellow junior Artur Zvinchuk (Bonn, Germany).

Morales then was called upon for a penalty kick in the 72nd minute and he tallied for a 3-3 game. Morales completed his hat trick in the 75th minute by tapping in a cross from the right side from Jones.

Aghrim and senior Rerom Delys (Vila Velha, Brazil) each had four shots and sophomore Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) made five saves for the Lightning (1-1).

Morales attempted five shots and Jack Nicholson totaled seven saves for the Spartans (3-0).

Both teams had 10 players on the field at game’s end and the Spartans closed with a 17-12 edge in fouls.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday visits Nyack in its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener as part of a doubleheader with the women’s team. The men’s game starts at 2:30 pm, which follows the women’s noon contest.

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Stevenson University women's volleyball team dropped the first set to Messiah College before rallying for a 3-1 win in Middle Atlantic Conference action Wednesday night at Brubaker Auditorium. The set scores were 26-28, 25-23, 25-15, 25-18.

Stevenson and Messiah have met in the last four MAC Commonwealth championship games, with the Mustangs winning each times.

The Mustangs (4-2, 1-0) were paced by sophomore Moriah Savage and her 11 kills. Junior Lauren Weaver had 10 kills on .404 hitting, while classmate Annika Schwartz added nine kills and nine digs. Defensively, junior Deanna Bradbury led the way with 27 digs, while senior Kristen Brooks added 10. Senior Sara Bollinger recorded 26 assists, with freshman Julie Nightwine adding 14.

Messiah (4-1, 0-1) was led by Jane Underman's 10 kills.

Stevenson trailed 22-18 in the first set before reeling off four straight points, including kills by Savage and freshman Victoria Prokic, to tie the set 22-22 before a Kristen Douglas kill swung serve back to the Falcons. The Mustangs got the next two points and were serving for set point, but a setting error tied things again 24-24. The two teams alternated the next four points before two straight for the hosts gave them the opening frame.

In the second set, the Mustangs held a 21-17 lead before three straight points pulled Messiah within one. Following an attack error that gave serve back to the guests, a Savage kill made it 23-20. Messiah would pull within one, 24-23, and serving to tie the match, but a kill by senior Kelsey Stave knotted the match 1-1.

Stevenson hit .241 in the third set while limiting Messiah to .000 hitting as it cruised 25-15 to take a 2-1 lead. Trailing 8-7, the Mustangs rattled off six straight points, including a pair of service aces by junior Megan Hren, to build a 13-8 lead. Stevenson took advantage of eight Messiah attack errors as well as four service aces in the frame.

The Mustangs hit a match-high .278 in the final set with 15 kills while the Falcons had just six kills hitting at an .097 clip. Stevenson never trailed and opened up a 17-8 lead following a kill by Brooks. Back-to-back Messiah errors closed out the match.

Stevenson hit .197 as a team while limiting the Falcons to .097 hitting.

The Mustangs return to action Friday with two matches at the Lynchburg Invitational, facing Maryville (Tenn.) at 5:00 pm before squaring off with the host Hornets at 7:00.

SUBJECT: Fifth Set Comeback Gives Wilmington Volleyball a 3-2 Victory over Millersville in Home Opener

DATE: September 7, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - Trailing by as many as 10-7 and as late as 12-10 in the fifth set, the Wilmington University volleyball team rallied back to take the final five points of the match and defeat Millersville, 3-2, in the 2016 home opener at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-18, 18-25, 25-10, 25-27, and 15-12.

The Wildcats (1-3) scored the final eight points of the first set to turn an 18-17 deficit into a 1-0 lead, but the Marauders fought back with a 25-18 second set victory of their own. The Wildcats jumped all over Millersville to begin the third set, scoring eight straight en route to a 13-1 run to take a commanding 15-5 lead. The Wildcats went on to win the set, 25-10.

The fourth had all the fixings of a great set, with multiple lead changes and comebacks. The Wildcats were close but trailed 15-13 before the Marauders rattled off four straight for a 19-13 lead. A kill from Megan Ward brought the Wildcats to within 21-18, but the Marauders reached set point at 24-21. Freshman Jill Braunsberg put a kill down and followed it up with an ace to stave off two set points before a block by freshmen Rebecca Rawlinson and Emma Kongevold tied the game 24-24. Another service ace by Braunsberg gave the Wildcats its first match point but the visitors got the ball back on a service error before coming up with back-to-back points to force a fifth set.

The Wildcats jumped out to a large 6-1 lead on the serve of Allison Briley, but the Marauders fired back with a 9-1 run of their own to take a 10-7 lead. A Rawlinson kill tied the set, 10-10, but Millersville again took a 12-10 lead with back-to-back kills. A costly service ace gave the ball back to the Wildcats and the home team never relinquished its serve. Jenna Brown served out the match, starting with consecutive kills from Rawlinson and Briley. A Marauder error gave the Wildcats their second match point and Brown ended it with an ace, 15-12.

Briley led the Wildcats with 15 kills, hitting .289 for the match on 38 swings. The senior also added two aces, seven digs, and three block assists. Rawlinson hit .458 from the middle position, putting down 14 kills while adding seven block assists. Addalyn Flores came up with a match high 22 digs while Brown added 12 from the back row. Braunsberg dished out a team high 23 assists while adding seven kills and six digs. Miranda Shaw added 21 assists as nine digs as well.

The Wildcats hit .196 as a team, holding Millersville to a .138 attack percentage by claiming 10 blocks and 62 digs in the match.

The Wildcats remain home for four matches this weekend, hosting the 2016 Wildcat Regional Invitational. They welcome seven teams to the WU Athletics Complex and start with matches against Pace and American International on Friday afternoon.

SUBJECT: Four First Half Strikes Lead Wilmington Men’s Soccer to 6-2 Triumph over the District of Columbia

DATE: September 7, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - A fast start allowed the Wilmington University men’s soccer team to cruise to a 6-2 victory over the District of Columbia on Wednesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Following a 90-minute delay to the start of the game, the Wildcats (2-0) jumped all over the Firebirds (0-3), scoring in the third and 13th minutes to control the game. Despite only outshooting the Firebirds, 10-8, in the first half, the Wildcats were able to tack on two late goals as well to head into the halftime break leading, 4-0.

Newcomer Sam Jester recorded his first goal as a Wildcat just 2:55 into the match, getting a slotted ball down the middle from Jamie Burridge for the quick 1-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later, Manuel Ruiz-Luque played a ball across the goalmouth from the left end line, finding the foot of Juan Bernal for the 2-0 lead just 12:36 into the match.

Bernal was at it again in the 41st minute, getting on the end of a beautiful run and touch pass. Off of a goal kick, Lorne Bickley made a run down the left side and got all the way to the end line. His pass to the six-yard box and continued on by Daniel McDonald-Taylor to an open Bernal on the back post.

Bickley continued to work and was on the scoring end of play to close out the first half, receiving the pay-out from the work of Dimitris Topouzlis. This time Topouzlis worked him way into the box and to the end line on the left side, flicking it up and over the drawn out keeper and right to the foot Bickley on the six.

The Firebirds tried to get back into the game to start he second half, coming out strong and even putting a goal on the board in the 48th minute. But the Wildcats stemmed the tide and again increased the lead. Deron Joe played an excellent cross with the outside of his right foot and Burridge was able to beat the Firebird goalkeeper to the ball at the top of the box. Burridge slotted the ball home in the 53rd minute for the 5-1 lead.

Bickley made it a day for himself in the 72nd minute, heading home a free kick from Bernal from the left sideline. Both Bernal and Bickley finished with two goals and an assist in the contest.

Vinny Tasca recorded five saves in goal for the Wildcats before giving way to Conor Halsted for the final 11 minute of action. The Wildcats out shot the Firebirds, 17-13, for the match.

The Wildcats have the upcoming weekend off and will return to action when they open the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on September 13. The Wildcats will host Chestnut Hill at the WU Athletics Complex with a 4:00 p.m. start.

The Hornets scored their two touchdowns in the second half on Daniel Epperson passes of six yards to Mason Rutherford and 13 yards to Brycen Alleyne. Rutherford, a transfer from San Bernardino JC (Cal.), caught six passes for a game-high 83 yards and a touchdown in his Hornet debut. Alleyne had 194 all-purpose yards in the game, including 141 on five kickoff returns, highlighted by returns of 50 and 47 yards. Goldey-Beacom righted itself over the final three sets and remained unbeaten with a 3-1 victory (21-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-7) over Cheyney at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning leveled the match in the second set with 15 kills, a .406 hitting percentage and six aces. Senior Grace McCarthy (Middletown, DE/DE Military Academy) had six kills and a .500 percentage in the set with sophomore Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) amassing nine assists.

The third set was even more of a mismatch with GBC owning a 16-5 kills edge with no errors and a .516 percentage. McCarthy and freshman Lindsay Przywara (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) notched five kills apiece and Florence totaled 11 assists for GBC (2-0), off to its best start since opening 3-0 in 2008.

The fourth set featured an almost-unheard-of 14-0 run that took the Lightning from a 6-3 lead to an insurmountable 20-3 cushion. The home side only needed eight kills and just one error in the set versus three kills and eight errors for the Wolves.

McCarthy closed with 17 kills, one off her career best, nine digs and a .316 hitting percentage with Przywara getting 11 kills and 11 digs for her first collegiate double-double. Florence closed with 35 assists with Jax Babezki (Warrington, PA) and fellow junior Jada Canteen (Newark, DE) totaling seven kills.

Sat, September 10, 2016
Dover, Del. (Sep. 10, 2016) --- Delaware State cut a 27-point deficit to seven early in the fourth quarter before running out of gas in a 34-20 loss to Monmouth in steamy conditions at Alumni Stadium today.

The Hornets (0-2) trailed 27-0 after a third-quarter Monmouth touchdown.

On DSU’s first play from scrimmage on the ensuing possession, Brycen Alleyne scored a touchdown on a career-best 64-yard run to put the Hornets on the board. The touchdown run was the fourth of Alleyne’s career and his second score of the season. He had a 13-yard touchdown catch in the Hornets’ season opener at Delaware. Wisdom Nzidee’s extra point kick cut Monmouth’s lead to 27-7 with 4:03 left in the third quarter.

After the Hornet defense forced Monmouth to go three-and-out, Delaware State used a big play to pull even closer on its next possession.

The three-play, 62-yard drive was capped off with a 46-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Epperson to Jerimiah Williams. Epperson was forced out of the pocket and nearly sacked on the play before finding Williams behind the Monmouth secondary for his first career touchdown catch. DSU’s extra point attempt following the score was blocked, but the Hawks’ lead was cut to 27-13 with 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Hornet defense again held Monmouth without a first down on the next possession, giving DSU’s special teams a chance for a big play.

The punt attempt by Monmouth’s Matt White was blocked by Kameron Rogers. The ball was scooped up by DSU freshman Brock Nichols, who dashed to the endzone from 13 yards out to cut the Hawk’s lead to eight. Nzidee’s extra point kick capped off the 20-point DSU run, and pulled the Hornets to within 27-20 with 14:47 left in the fourth quarter.

Monmouth (2-0) answered with a long scoring drive to grab the momentum back from the Hornets. Reserve running back Ed Royds capped off the 17-play, 79-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run to give the Hawks a two-touchdown lead. Back-up quarterback Cody Williams completed six-of-seven passes for 40 yards, and Darren Ambush had a 20-yard run to highlight Monmouth’s seven-minute-44-second scoring drive.

The Hawks took advantage of two special teams plays and a Delaware State turnover to open up their big lead. Monmouth scored 10 points on drives that started after blocking two Hornet punts, and the Hawks added a touchdown four plays after a recovering a fumble at the DSU 26.

Monmouth outgained the Hornets 441-to-221 in the contest. The Hawks rushed for 206 yards and passed for 235. Delaware State had 124 yards rushing and 97 by the pass.

Alleyne rushed for a career-high 94 yards on just nine carries, while freshman Mike Waters added 33 yards on six rushing attempts.

Delaware State again used both Kobie Lain and Epperson at quarterback. Lain started the contest, and connected on six-of-12 passes 20 yards, while Epperson was three-for-seven for 77 yards. He threw his third TD pass of the season and was intercepted once in the game.

Royds led the Hawks with 97 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries.

DSU linebacker Malik Harris had a game-high 11 tackles, including five solo stops, while fellow linebacker Rashawn Barrett recorded 10 tackles, highlighted by two behind the line-of-scrimmage.

The Hornets will have a week off before taking on FBS Missouri on Sep. 24. DSU returns home Oct. 8 to face MEAC rival Hampton. Game time is 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Widener Women’s Soccer Plays Washington College to a 2-2 Draw

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2016)– Junior Eva Reyes (Cranbury, N.J.) and senior Erica McDonough (Glendora, N.J.) each found the back of the net as the Widener University women's soccer team played Washington College (2-1-1) to a 2-2 draw on Saturday at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

The Shorewomen opened the scoring early in the first half with a goal by Arianna Sabatino. Sixteen minutes later, Reyes answered right back with her first marker of the season. Freshman Lexi Slusher (Pennsville, N.J.) played the junior a square ball through the box, which was drilled on the ground into the back of the net.

The teams continued to trade goals in the second half. Washington College regained the lead just three minutes after the start of the frame. The Pride, however, pulled through with an answer in the 71st minute as McDonugh dribbled the ball past the goalkeeper and unleashed a shot to make the score 2-2 and sending the match into overtime.

Widener (2-1-1) and the visitors were back and forth with their shots at a 16-15 ratio at the end of the match. The Pride had an opportunity late in the second overtime when McDonough crossed a ball into the box and found Slusher's head at the end of it. However, neither team was able to add another mark to the scoreboard. Freshman Jenna Keating (Havertown, Pa.) turned away six shots for Widener, while the Shorewomen's Courtney Colbert tallied eight saves.

Widener resumes action on the road on Wednesday Sept. 14th at 7:30 p.m. when it takes on Rutgers-Newark.
