Winning Streaks Ends For Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball In Wild 78-76 Loss at Bloomfield

In an intense battle between two first-place teams in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, Goldey-Beacom gave up a 3-pointer from Nick Davidson with two seconds left in a crushing 78-76 loss at Bloomfield in Bloomfield, NJ.

Bloomfield held a 69-58 lead with 6 1/2 minutes left before GBC went on a 10-2 run to close to 71-68 with 4:31 left. Senior Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) scored seven points in that spurt, including a 3-pointer to cap it.

A layup each way put the score at 73-70 before Davidson hit once from the line to give the Bears a four-point cushion with 1:56 remaining. Goldey-Beacom senior Nick Lawson (Woodbury, NJ) was summoned from the bench for the first time all game and brought his squad within 74-72 by canning a jumper with 1:46 to play.

Rakwan Kelly missed a jumper for the Bears and the Lightning now had a chance to tie or take the lead. They settled for the tie with sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) burying two free throws with 1:26 to go, making it 74-74.

Chiedozie Akawuaku hit once from the stripe for the Bears with 1:10 left for a 75-74 game and now the Lightning had an opportunity for their first lead in the second half. They got it when sophomore Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, NJ) converted a layup with 58 seconds left for a 76-75 cushion.

Bloomfield then almost coughed away the game when Marcus Fleming committed a crucial offensive foul with 48 seconds left. GBC then had the ball going for a two-possession game when Lawson missed a 3-pointer, but Shimou grabbed a huge offensive rebound and was fouled with 22 seconds to play.

It was a double-bonus situation and still be a one-possession game no matter what Shimou did at the line. But he missed both free throws and now the Bears could go for the win.

Davidson was the one who came through by receiving a pass from Ahmid Williams and nailing the go-ahead bucket. GBC had one more chance, but Shimou misfired on a 3-pointer as time expired.

Senior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) scored 17 points, Taite netted 16 and senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) added 10 for the Lightning, who shot 45 percent (29-of-64) from the field and had three players foul out.

Davidson’s shot capped his 25-point day with Kelly and Ignacio Diez getting 13 apiece for the Bears, who shot 42 percent (26-of-63) from the floor.

GBC (19-4, 13-3 CACC) saw its 12-game winning streak and seven-game road winning streak – both school records – snapped and as of Saturday at 5:00 pm leads Philadelphia U. (12-3) by one-half game atop the CACC South Division.

Bloomfield (18-7, 13-3) holds a 2 1/2 game cushion over Dominican (10-5) atop the CACC North Division.

Goldey-Beacom is home Wednesday against University of the Sciences at 8:00 pm. The women’s game precedes it at 6:00 pm.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Basketball Clinches CACC Tournament Spot Despite Loss at Bloomfield

The clouds were removed over Goldey-Beacom after learning it clinched a spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament despite a 60-54 loss at Bloomfield in Bloomfield, NJ.

The ticket was punched with Philadelphia U. falling at home to Caldwell, ensuring Goldey-Beacom’s seventh trip in the last eight years. The Lightning (15-10, 11-5 CACC) remain in second place in the CACC South Division, but now are 2 1/2 games behind University of the Sciences (14-3).

GBC only was down 51-50 with under four minutes left before going into a scoring drought. It did not help when Bloomfield’s Ilysia Lewis hit a layup with 3:37 left and then made another 21 seconds later for a five-point game.

Freshman Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) gave the Lightning some life thanks to a big 3-pointer with 2:52 to play for a 55-53 margin. The goose eggs then continued to plague both teams and one needed to break through to claim victory.

It was the Bears that did so, keyed by Zhane Robinson converting a layup with 55 seconds remaining for a 57-53 contest. Lightning junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) cut the deficit to three with 37 seconds to go by hitting a free throw.

Now it was time for the Lightning to get a stop, but it was not to be. The Bears milked the clock looking for the open shot and it was Robinson who converted, nailing a 3-pointer from the right wing with 12 seconds remaining for the final.

Junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) closed with 19 points and now has 1,442 career, moving into second place in team history. She also recorded three assists and is tied for the program’s career lead at 416 with Devonne Richardson (2009-13).

Bryson had 15 points and 10 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season for the Lightning, who only shot 34 percent (20-of-59) from the floor.

Tianna Smith netted 20 points and Robinson added 16 and 12 rebounds for the Bears (18-6, 15-1), who shot 52 percent (13-of-25) in the second half and 42 percent (25-of-59) for the game.

Goldey-Beacom trailed 31-26 at halftime despite Bruno scoring 13 points and Bryson adding nine. The Lightning shot just 33 percent (10-of-30) from the floor in the half.

Goldey-Beacom is home Wednesday against University of the Sciences at 6:00 pm. The men’s game follows at 8:00 pm.

Widener Men’s Swimming Places Second at MAC Championships

YORK, Pa. (Feb. 12, 2017) – Sophomore Aaron Green (Camden-Wyoming, Del.) factored into a pair of meet records in leading the Widener University men’s swimming team to a second-place finish at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships at the Graham Aquatic Center on Sunday evening.

The Pride picked up two of the three major individual awards at the end of the competition. Green was named the recipient of the David B. Eavenson Award, which is given to the MAC Swimmer of the Year, and freshman Martin Bohdan (Tobyhanna, Pa.) earned MAC Rookie of the Year laurels. Green also became the third straight Widener student-athlete to pick up the league’s top honor, while Bohdan was the program’s third rookie of the year winner in the last four seasons.

Albright won its sixth title in the last seven years, while Widener finished in a close second with 553.5 points. Arcadia (530.5), Misericordia (307), Messiah (307), King’s (287), Hood (277), Lycoming (188), Lebanon Valley (144), FDU-Florham (120), Stevenson (84) and Wilkes (66) rounded out the team standings.

Widener temporarily took the lead by having six student-athletes combine to score a jaw-dropping 76 points in the 100-yard freestyle. Green won the event in a meet-record time of 45.33 seconds, edging out senior teammate Ian Gaynor (Donegal, Ireland) and his mark of 45.57, while Bohdan and junior Tom Platt (Wallingford, Pa.) were fifth and sixth in 47.17 and 47.63. Green’s record-breaking performance also met the NCAA provisional standard.

The Pride ended the meet on a high note by having their 400 free relay team put forth a record-breaking effort. Gaynor, Platt, Bohdan and Green combined to punch in a time of 3:04.29 to set school and meet records while also eclipsing the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Green’s split on the anchor leg was an impressive 45.99 seconds to help the group finish more than six seconds ahead of runner-up Arcadia in the event.

Widener will now wait to see if it will send any swimmers to the NCAA Championships, which will take place in Shenandoah, Texas from March 15-18. Gaynor, Green and the program's 200 and 400 free relay squads are all eligible after registering NCAA "B" cut times over the weekend.

SUBJECT: Fourth-Ranked Florida Tops Blue Hens in Softball on Final Day of USF Tournament
DATE: February 12, 2017
TAMPA, Fla.
-- The fourth-ranked University of Florida softball team used a big second inning to post a 9-0 victory in five innings over the Blue Hens Sunday afternoon on the final day of the USF-Wilson DeMarini Tournament.
The Gators, who improved to 4-0 on the year, opened the scoring during the bottom of the first inning when Justine McLean led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a one-out single by Nicole DeWitt.
Florida then added eight runs the following frame, as after the first three batters of the inning reached base, Jaimie Hoover belted a grand slam over the leftfield fence. One out later Amanda Lorenz added a solo homer, while the final two runs scored when Jordan Roberts reached on a throwing error by UD third baseman Giovanna Kolofer.
Blue Hen junior centerfielder Devon Steiner singled to center in the top of the second inning to account for the lone Delaware (0-5) hit of the afternoon.
Gators pitcher Katie Chronister won her first decision of the year with the one-hit shutout, as she issued just one walk to Leanna Gearhart while striking out four. Blue Hen starter Jordan Cargile fell to 0-3 after allowing six runs in 1.1 frames, while Maddi Marsh gave up three runs before Kat Morris fired a pair of scoreless innings.
Delaware returns to Florida next weekend to play five games at the Orange Blossom Invitational in Orlando, including a 1 p.m. game with Marshall and a 3:15 contest with Bethune-Cookman on Friday.

Fourth-Quarter Rally Sends Lifts Widener Women's Basketball Over Arcadia; Rimmer Nets 37 Points

GLENSIDE, Pa. (Feb. 14, 2017) – Freshman Devan Rimmer (Parkasie, Pa.) poured in a career-high 37 points as the Widener University women’s basketball team rallied to win a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth road contest over Arcadia by an 83-73 decision on Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

After Maureen Fiocca closed out the third quarter by sinking a pair of free throws to put the Knights ahead by two, the teams would battle back-and-forth throughout the fourth frame and exchange the lead four times before it was all over. Junior Allison Gallagher (Souderton, Pa.), however, caught fire by netting nine points in the final 10 minutes, which included canning a trifecta to put her team ahead by a 65-63 score with 5:39 left, and freshman Madison Ireland (Garnet Valley, Pa.) added insurance baskets to allow the Pride to leave the gym with their second straight win.

Arcadia (7-17, MAC Commonwealth 3-12) jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never trailed in the opening half. Widener tied the game up at 5-all when Rimmer drilled a 3-pointer and tried to keep it close, but the Knights had an answer on the other end when they needed it to stay ahead. Fiocca made a layup to extend the lead to 20-11 with 2:09 remaining in the opening quarter, and the hosts got a buzzer-beating layup from Susan Bossler to build up a 35-25 advantage by halftime.

The Pride sliced the deficit in half to begin the third quarter with Rimmer leading the charge. Arcadia, however, once again was able to respond on the other end by getting a layup and a 3-pointer from Fiocca to keep the visitors at bay.

Widener continued to chip away at the deficit and was able to knot the score three times at 45s, 48s and then 50s before the end of the frame. Rimmer and Gallagher drained back-to-back 3-pointers, and Rimmer added a layup to keep the visitors in the game. Sophomore Emily Hardy (Lewisberry, Pa.) then converted two free throws to give the Pride their first lead at 52-50, setting up the scene of a game that would eventually be decided in its final minutes.

Rimmer scored a career-high 37 points by shooting a blistering 75 percent (12-of16) from the floor, including 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from long range, and a perfect 6-of-6 at the line to lead the way for Widener. It was also the highest single-game point total since Jen Egee netted 36 on Jan. 25, 2014 and fell just shy of the school record of 39 set by Chelsea Luhta against Moravian on Jan. 18, 2006. Gallagher scored 18 points, which all came in the second half, and Ireland finished with nine points to go along with four steals.

Fiocca paced Arcadia in the setback by lighting up for 34 points and also tallying eight rebounds. Bossler chipped in 15 points and five boards, while Olivia Roseman concluded the evening with four of the team’s eight assists.

Widener (8-16, MAC Commonwealth 5-10) will conclude its 2016-17 campaign when it visits Alvernia on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom College Department of Athletics Announces Inaugural Hall of Fame Class

Goldey-Beacom College is proud to announce Michael Tobiason (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth), Toni Jones (Lewes, DE/Sussex Technical) and Jason McCloskey (New Castle, DE/St. Elizabeth) will comprise the school’s first class into its new Athletics Hall of Fame.

The three will be enshrined Sunday, April 23 during a ceremony at Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, DE. The ceremony also will be combined with the department’s celebration of all athletics teams.

Tobiason had a memorable run on the golf course from 2002-06 that included a slew of individual accomplishments. He was tabbed PING All-American in 2005 and 2006, picked a Collegiate Golf All-American in 2006, was a four-time Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference individual champion and a four-time conference Player of the Year.

Tobiason’s school-record 23 victories included the 2006 NCAA Regional championship, which helped GBC to the team regional crown for the College’s first win in an NCAA Tournament event in any sport. He also paced the Lightning to three straight CACC titles (2003-05) and his sixth-place showing at the 2005 NCAA Regional helped the squad end third.

Tobiason professionally played over 200 events with 13 victories, 51 top-five finishes and 75 top-10 showings. Most notably, he qualified for the 2011 U.S. Open after finishing third in both the local and sectional qualifying tournaments.

Jones was a reliable player for the women’s basketball team and could do it all whether with her scoring, ability to control the paint and defense. She was named first team All-CACC in 2008 after being tabbed second team in 2006 and 2007 as well as third team in 2005.

She scored 1,993 points and recorded 830 field goals during her career that both remain school records by decisive margins. Upon her graduation, she was tied for first in school history with 65 blocks, second overall with 929 rebounds, second with a .470 field goal percentage, second with a .784 free throw percentage, second with 297 free throws and second with 204 steals.

Jones twice played in the CACC Tournament and her teams helped lay the foundation for the program that in 2011 won the conference title and played in the NCAA Tournament.

When it came a dominating player on the soccer pitch who was counted on to lead the way, McCloskey was just that. His scoring touch, passing skills and ability to come through was it was needed most helped lead him to be named NAIA Honorable Mention All-America, Region X Player of the Year and CACC Player of the Year in 2002. McCloskey also was tabbed All-CACC in 2001 and Honorable Mention All-Conference in 2000.

McCloskey helped the 2002 unit win the NAIA Region X crown that earned the squad an appearance in the 16-team NAIA Tournament. He also was the 2003 CACC Tournament MVP with six goals and an assist over three games, leading Goldey-Beacom to the league title and a berth in the ECAC Tournament.

McCloskey’s 81 goals and 187 points are tops in school history by considerable amounts and he still owns the top three single-season marks for goals and points in team annals. His 25 assists upon graduation also were a school record.

Tickets are on sale for $40 each and can be purchased by e-mailing Sports Information Director Derek Crudele at crudele@gbc.edu.

DATE: February 17, 2017
BOSTON, Mass.
– Junior Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) registered a career-high six blocked shots, but the Hens struggled offensively Friday evening in a 50-41 loss at Northeastern.

Nicholas finished the night with her first double double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds while recording all of Delaware’s blocks. The forward has now swatted 109 career shots, tying Tiara Malcom (2001-05) for sixth all-time.

Senior Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) added 11 points with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

As a team, the Hens (14-11, 8-6 CAA) shot 26.8 percent on 15-of-56 shooting from the floor. The Huskies didn’t fare much better at 32.0 percent (16-of-50), but capitalized from behind the arc.

Claudia Ortiz led Northeastern (9-17, 5-9 CAA) with 14 points, three assists and three steals while Jess Genco posted 10 points with five rebounds.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Tina Martin

“We gave it a lot of good effort, but unfortunately we came up on the short end tonight. The decision-making wasn’t at the level that it’s been the last few games and we really made some questionable shot choices. You have to hand it to Northeastern, they made big shots when they needed to and their guards really hurt us in transition.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS
· With her six blocked shots, Makeda Nicholas also passed Christine Cole on the career charts as Cole registered 108 from 1999-03.
· Nicholas’ six blocks were the most since Nicole Enabosi logged seven at Georgetown in December 2015.
· The Blue Hens shot just 7.7 percent (1-of-13) in the third quarter.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
· Sunday, February 19 – Delaware at Drexel * – 3 p.m. – Daskalakis Athletic Center (Philadelphia, Pa.) – American Sports Network TV
· Friday, February 24 – Elon at Delaware – 7 p.m. – Bob Carpenter Center (Newark, Del.)
· Sunday, February 26 – Delaware at College of Charleston – 2 p.m. – TD Arena (Charleston, S.C.)

SUBJECT: Delaware Women's Basketball Can’t Overcome Dragons, Drop 53-49 Verdict in Overtime
DATE: February 19, 2017
PHILADELPHIA, Pa
. – It’s always a close one between the Delaware and Drexel women’s basketball teams and Sunday afternoon was no different as the Dragons defeated the Blue Hens, 53-49, in overtime at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Senior guard Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) led the Hens (14-12, 8-7 CAA) with 21 points, including all five of the team’s points in the overtime period.
Sophomore Nicole Enabosi (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) added eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds while junior Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) swatted a game-best three shots to go along with eight points and five rebounds.
The back-and-forth affair featured nine lead changes and nine ties. Senior forward Hannah Jardine (St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada/O’Donel) forced the game into overtime with 13 seconds remaining as she knocked down a jumper at the top of the key to tie things at 44-44.
Jessica Pellechio posted a game-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers, for the Dragons (20-6, 11-4 CAA).
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Tina Martin

“We had our opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize when we needed to. We had shots and layups that we just didn’t convert. It’s frustrating, but I’m proud of this team’s effort. We’re playing extremely hard and it’s disappointing not to finish this one out. We definitely didn’t lose because of lack of effort. This was a great game and it’s a shame someone had to lose.”
Senior Co-Captain Erika Brown
“We made some costly mistakes today. The defense is there; we played hard today. If we had less turnovers and boxed out more, we would’ve won this game.”
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Neither team led by more than seven in the game.
· Makeda Nicholas moved into sixth place in program history with 112 career blocked shots.
· Delaware held Drexel to a season-low 28.3 shooting percentage (15-of-53).
· The Hens outrebounded the Dragons, 37-34.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
· Friday, February 24 – Elon at Delaware – 7 p.m. – Bob Carpenter Center (Newark, Del.) – PINK GAME

SUBJECT: Wilmington Softball Finishes Myrtle Beach Trip With a Pair of Losses

DATE: February 18, 2017
djl

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - The Wilmington University softball team wrapped up its season opening weekend with a pair of losses on Sunday, falling to Merrimack, 5-0, before closing out the day with a 6-3 setback to Concord at the Ned Donkle Complex.

The Wildcats (3-3) got the bats going early in its first four games of the 2017 Snowbird Softball Freeze Out Tournament, but had trouble finding their stroke on Sunday against Merrimack and Concord. They were limited to just five hits in the two games.

Merrimack’s Megan Cook was dealing in the circle in the first game of the day, striking out five while not allowing the Wildcats to get anything going offensively. The Wildcats went down in order in each of the first five innings and Cook had a perfect game going with two outs in the sixth. Pinch hitter Jazmeen Llamas broke that up with a slap over the third baseman and down the left field line that dropped in. But she would be stranded at first as Cook got the next batter to foul out.

The Warriors scored a pair of unearned runs in the second inning and tacked on three more with three hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch for the 5-0 lead. The Wildcats were not able to get anything going with their final at-bat in the seventh as Cook only faced 22 batters in the contest.

Concord jumped out in front in the nightcap with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Wildcats answered in the top of the third. With two outs and Mirabella Klebart on second, Rosa’Lynn Burton singled to left to bring in Klebart and tie the game.

Burton was at it again with a two-out rally in the fifth, as Klebart and Llamas reach base to spark the inning. Burton doubled to left center chasing around Klebart and Llamas to move ahead 3-1.

But the Mountain Lions responded in the bottom of the sixth inning, changing the momentum of the game. Concord cut the deficit to 3-2 with a solo homer to lead off the inning and then loaded the bases with only one out. A bases loaded walk forced in a run to tie the game before a two-run single gave the Mountain Lions the lead, 5-3. An RBI groundout ended the scoring for Concord, but they were suddenly ahead, 6-3, with only three outs remaining.

The Wildcats couldn’t mount a comeback in the top of the seventh, going down in order to end the game.

Burton was the only Wildcat with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Meghan Brown and Klebart added hits for the Wildcats.

Caitlyn Whiteside was saddled with the loss against Merrimack while Danielle Bradley picked up the loss against Concord.

The Wildcats have 15 days to recharge and refocus before they play again, as they are off until their annual trip to Florida starting on Monday, March 6.

SUBJECT: Delaware Softball Concludes Action at Orange Blossom Invitational with 8-1 Triumph Over LIU Brooklyn
DATE: February 19, 2017
ORLANDO, Fla.
-- All nine Blue Hen starters reached the hit column as the University of Delaware softball team cruised to an 8-1 victory over LIU Brooklyn to conclude action at the Orange Blossom Invitational Sunday morning at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
The Blackbirds (3-6) took the early lead in the top of the first inning as Angie Rizzi singled with one out, moved to third on a single by Nereyda Gutierrez, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Angie Vazquez. However the Blue Hens (2-8) answered with two runs in the bottom half when Devon Steiner laced a double to rightcenter to drive home Mattie Nuccio and Anna Steinmetz.
Giovanna Kolofer and Sarah Coyne then opened the bottom of the second with singles, while Emily Neal followed with an RBI double to leftfield to allow Kolofer to score. Two outs later Mariah Kondravy delivered a two-run single to right, as Coyne and Neal each crossed the plate to make it a 5-1 game.
Delaware tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth as Leanna Gearhart led off with a single before Steinmetz blasted a two-out homer to left. The Blue Hens added their final run the following frame after Neal reached on an error and eventually scored when Kondravy worked a bases loaded walk.
UD pitcher Jordan Cargile improved to 2-4 in the circle after allowing just one run on three hits in six innings, before Taylor Curran fired a scoreless seventh.
Gearhart and Kolofer each finished 3 for 4 with a run scored for the Blue Hens, while Steiner added two hits and Kondravy drove home three.
Game Notes:
• Kondravy became UD’s career leader in RBI and now has 109, breaking the previous record of 107 held by Lauren Mark (1998-2001)
• Steinmetz belted her third home run of the season
• Coyne made her first career start as a Blue Hen
• Delaware improved to 3-3 vs. LIU Brooklyn, as the teams met for the first time since 1994

SUBJECT: Delaware Baseball Gets Quality Start from Milley but Pitt Posts 3-2 Win Florida Finale
DATE: February 19, 2017
KISSIMMEE, Fla
. -- The University of Delaware baseball squad closed out the Sunshine State Classic with a 3-2 loss against Pitt on Sunday morning at Osceola County Stadium.
The Hens (0-4) received another strong outing from a starter as Kevin Milley went seven innings, allowing just five hits and one run.
“It’s a shame we wasted that start from Milley, and did not get a win," head coach Jim Sherman said.
"Kevin did a great job for seven innings, but we just didn’t have enough offense today to crack the win column. Our guys played extremely hard all weekend despite not having the results to show for it. We now as a coaching staff need to take the positives and build on them going into next weekend.”
The game was deadlocked at 1-1 until the eighth inning when the Panthers took the lead for good at 3-1. The Hens put up a run in the ninth but left three runners on base to end the game.
With the game dead-locked at one in the eighth, Delaware replaced Milley with James Meeker.
Meeker retired the first two Pittsburgh (3-1) batters before allowing a double to Jacob Wright. Meeker then hit Caleb Parry and allowed an infield hit to Frank Maldonado to load the bases. David Yanni then singled to give Pitt a 3-1 lead heading to the ninth.
In the games final frame the Blue Hens battled hard, loading the bases with two outs for sophomore Kyle Baker. Baker singled home first baseman Nick Patten, cutting the Pittsburgh lead to just 3-2.
With the tying run just 90 feet away, Pittsburgh brought in closer Yaya Chentouf to face UD catcher Nick Tierno. Chentouf would get the better of Tierno in the end as the senior catcher lined out to second base to end the game.
Delaware will return to action next week when they participate in the Old Dominion Tournament in Norfolk, Va.
The Blue Hens open the weekend Friday against Old Dominion (4 p.m.) and continue action Saturday against Saint Joseph’s (12 noon) before finishing Sunday with a game against Kentucky (11 a.m.).
HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Milley has now thrown at least 6 innings in three straight starts dating back to last season.
• Milley has also struck out at least five batters in four consecutive starts and has pitched to a 1.36 ERA his last three starts dating back to the 2016 season
• Kevin Mohollen reached base in all four games this weekend.

Goldey-Beacom Softball Falls to Mount Olive and Catawba

Another tough test of softball was on tap for Goldey-Beacom, which was dealt a 12-2 loss by Mount Olive and an 8-3 setback by Catawba in Salisbury, NC.

GBC grabbed a 1-0 lead on Mount Olive in the top of the first when senior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) doubled to bring home sophomore Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE). After the Trojans grabbed a 2-1 lead, senior Charlee King (New Castle, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) in the third brought Mao home on a sacrifice fly for a tie game.

Mount Olive grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the third when Caitlin Ewers lined a two-run single down the right-field line for a 4-2 contest. The game ended via run rule in the sixth when Callie Ferrell launched a three-run homer.

Mao closed with two hits and Millville, NJ sophomore Alexa Calareso permitted four runs – three earned – and three hits over 2 2/3 innings.

Ewers, Ferrell and Alexis Hobson all had two hits for the Trojans (7-6). Ewers gave up two runs and four hits over six innings with three strikeouts.

Against Catawba, Goldey-Beacom drew to a 1-1 tie in the third when Murphy scored on a wild pitch. But the Indians plated four runs in the bottom of the frame for a 5-1 cushion, keyed by Kristen Stinnard’s two-run single.

The Lightning (1-5) looked for a rally in the seventh and cut into the deficit with senior Amber Wroble (Mechanicsville, MD) lacing a two-run double to left, scoring King and sophomore Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE).

Calareso was charged with five runs – four earned – and 10 hits over five innings.

Stinnard record three hits and Kaylee Cook allowed three runs and five hits over seven innings with three strikeouts for Catawba (3-8).

Goldey-Beacom is off until March 4, when it faces Bridgeport for a noon doubleheader in the home opener.

SUBJECT: Philadelphia Clinches the South Division’s Top Seed with 81-61 Victory over Men’s Basketball in Regular Season Finale

DATE: February 21, 2017
djl

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - An unbelievable second half performance from beyond the three-point arc sent Philadelphia to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division Regular Season Championship over the Wilmington University men’s basketball team, 81-61, on Tuesday night at the Gallagher Center.

The Wildcats (19-8, 14-4 CACC) already had a CACC Tournament First Round home game locked up, but a win would have given the squad its first CACC South Division Regular Season Championship in program history. Instead, the Wildcats will settle for the South Division’s No. 2 seed and will host the North Division’s No. 3 seed, Caldwell, on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.

Trailing by its largest margin of the first half, 30-23, with 4:19 showing on the clock, the Wildcats went on a run to take the lead into the halftime break. Two Nick Richards’ free throws started the spurt followed by a Tyaire Ponzo-Meek layup and a drive by Drew Johnson II. A Brian Adkins block at the defensive end turned into a fastbreak dunk at the other end for Richards, putting the Wildcats in front, 31-30, with 33 seconds to play in the half. The Wildcats picked up a defensive stop to end the half and go into the break leading by one point.

Omari Dill-Pettiford hit a jumper to start the second half and put the Wildcats ahead, 33-30, but that is when the Rams struck fire. Back-to-back three-points by Kaison Randolph put the home team up 38-33, before two more three-pointers by Josh Bradanese had the Rams ahead, 48-37, with 14:39 left in regulation. The Rams went on to hit their first seven three-pointers of the second half, finally missing at the 9:39 mark of the second half.

The Rams went on to shoot 13-of-17 from deep in the second half alone, finishing 15-of-27 (55.6 percent) from beyond the arc in the contest. Conversely, the Wildcats only hit 3-of-16 from three-point territory for the game, including just 1-of-9 in the second half.

There wasn’t much the Wildcats could do once the three-pointer started falling for the Rams.

The lead ballooned out to as large as 21 points on another Bradanese three-pointer with 5:57 to play, ending all hope of a late game comeback by the Wildcats. The Rams took their largest lead of the game with 1:19 to play, 81-59, on yet another three-pointer as the shot clock wound down.

The Wildcats shot 23-of-58 (39.7 percent) from the floor for the game while the Rams shot a hot 30-of-46 (53.6 percent) for the game. The Rams’ Bradanese and Randolph each hit five three-pointers while Andre Gibbs added four of his own.

Ponzo-Meek led the Wildcats with 19 points while Richards was the only other to reach double digits with 16 points. Tajee Almon grabbed a team high seven rebounds while Miles Gillette came off the bench to grab five boards.

Bradanese finished with a career high 27 points to lead all scorers while Randolph finished with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Wildcats will now look to the CACC Tournament, as they will make their second ever appearance in the postseason in the NCAA era. The Wildcats went to the CACC Tournament Championship in the 2013-14 season. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Records 20th Victory in 98-63 Triumph at Chestnut Hill

Goldey-Beacom tied the school record with its 20th victory of the season and was on cruise control in the second half for a 98-63 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia, PA.

The victory total matches that from the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, both of which resulted in a trip to the CACC final. The Lightning (20-6, 14-5 CACC) also break the school record for most league victories in a season and extend their team mark for most road wins in a season to 11.

GBC ends third in the CACC South Division and will travel to Dominican-NY (17-11, 12-7), which closed second in the North Division, in the conference quarterfinals on Saturday at 2:00 pm in Orangeburg, NY.

The Lightning turned a 65-61 lead with 7:21 remaining and scored the next 33 points to open a 37-point cushion, only giving up an innocuous basket near the end of the contest. Seniors Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) and Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) scored 10 points apiece in that spurt.

Williams ended with a season-high 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting, Swint poured in 19 points, junior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) scored 18, sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) netted 11 and senior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) added 10 for the Lightning, who shot 53 percent (32-of-60) from the floor.

Nasir Bell scored 16 points, Demetrius Isaac netted 14 and Liban Awl added 10 for the Griffins (5-21, 2-17), who shot 39 percent (22-of-56) from the floor.

SUBJECT: Charleston Men’s Basketball Holds Off Delaware For 78-65 CAA Win Over Blue Hens
DATE: February 23, 2017
kmt:
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men’s basketball team used a commanding run spanning the end of the first half and the beginning of the second to take control, before holding off the Blue Hens down the stretch as the Cougars recorded a 78-65 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Delaware Thursday night at TD Arena.
Charleston (22-8, 13-4 CAA), which won its third straight game, remained in second place in the league standings with its 11th home win of the season. The Blue Hens (12-18, 5-12 CAA) dropped their second straight and will be the ninth seed in next week’s CAA Tournament at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Jarrell Brantley finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars while Joe Chealey also notched a double-double, the first of his career, with 20 points and 10 rebounds to go with seven assists. Charleston shot 46.9 percent from the field, knocked down 25 of 29 free throws and held a 38-33 rebounding advantage.
Blue Hen senior guard Cazmon Hayes scored a season-high 20 points for Delaware, knocking down four three-pointers, and now needs just five points to reach 1,000 for his career. Eric Carter added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Blue Hens, while Ryan Daly reached double figures for the eighth consecutive game with 10 points while grabbing a team-high nine boards. Delaware shot just 34.9 percent from the floor, including 8 of 26 from three-point range.
“I’m proud of how we battled back, digging ourselves out of a 20-point deficit to cut it to six; that shows a lot of maturity and belief from our group,” said Blue Hen head coach Martin Ingelsby. “We just couldn’t get enough stops when we needed to down the stretch. “Eric (Carter) had a big night for us and has really shown his development lately, while Cazmon (Hayes) hit some big shots and was able to get to the rim. We had a good tempo for most of the first half, but we really struggled late in the first half and early in the second, and that’s where we lost control of the game.”
The opening half was a back and forth affair that featured 11 lead changes, and neither team led by more than four points for the first 18 minutes. A baseline jumper by Carter gave the Blue Hens a 26-23 lead with 4:25 on the clock, but Charleston answered with a nine-point spurt to take a six-point advantage. Darian Bryant ended the run with a pair of free throws, before Grant Riller added two of his own to give the Cougars a 34-28 halftime edge.
Charleston then opened the second period by scoring the first 14 points, extending the margin to 48-28 on a Jaylen McManus three-pointer at the 15:09 mark. Bryant converted a layup with 14:27 left to give Delaware its first points of the half and snap a 10-minute field goal drought, before the Cougars took their largest lead of the night at 51-30 with 14:37 to play.
The Blue Hens were still down 20 two minutes later but responded with an 14-2 run, including 10 points in a row, to get within 56-48 on a Carter layup with 5:08 left. Charleston extended the margin back to 12, but Daly and Hayes hit consecutive triples to make it a 64-58 game with 2:04 on the clock. However Riller answered with a three-pointer play and Delaware would not threaten the rest of the way.
The Blue Hens close their regular season on Saturday when Delaware travels to Elon for a 7 p.m. game with the Phoenix.
Game Notes:
• Daly’s eight-game double figure scoring streak is tied for the second longest by a freshman in UD history
• Carter reached double figures for the sixth time this season
• Riller reached double figures for the 14th straight game
• Charleston is ranked No. 13 in this week’s CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll
• Charleston has now won four of the last five meetings with Delaware, including three straight

SUBJECT: Late Game Heroics Earn Wilmington Baseball Opening Day Sweep over Southern Connecticut State and Molloy

DATE: February 24, 2017
djl

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - Down to their final at-bat against Molloy, the Wilmington University baseball team put up four runs to secure the second of two wins on Opening Day on Friday, defeating Southern Connecticut State, 14-4, before coming back to take down Molloy, 6-3, at the Polo Grounds at the Ripken Experience.

Tied 3-3 with the bases empty and two outs in the top of the ninth, the Wildcats (2-0) loaded the bases before Rocky Ferrier cleared them to give the Wildcats the come-from-behind victory over Molloy and earn the Friday sweep.

In most baseball scenarios to start the season, the pitching always seems to be ahead of the curve compared to the bats, but that wasn’t the case in the season opener for the Wildcats against Southern Connecticut. The bats started hot and collected 22 hits in the game, crossing the plate 14 times.

Ferrier started the day with a solid 4-for-5 performance at the plate against SCSU while Kendall Small matched him with a 4-for-6 game. Max Carney was right behind the duo by going 3-for-4, including launching a home run to right field in his first plate appearance of the season. Regan Hidalgo and Jesse Long also collected multiple hits for the Wildcats, going 2-for-6 with a team leading three RBI and 2-for-5, respectively.

Carney’s homer opened the scoring in the top of the second but it was Hidalgo’s two-run single to right in the fourth that broke the 1-1 tie. The Wildcats never looked back. Logan Gilbert collected an RBI single in his first collegiate at-bat in the fifth, putting the Wildcats up, 6-1. Two more runs came across on an error in the eighth inning before Small put the Wildcats up 9-1 with an RBI single back up the middle.

The Owls got to reliever Nick Grant in the bottom of the eighth, scoring an unearned run, but the transfer escaped without further damage to finish off his first appearance as a Wildcat.

The Wildcats put the game away in the top of the ninth, as Kyle Fries doubles in Gilbert before Joey Cautillo collected his first collegiate hit and RBI with a two-run single. The Wildcats capped the scoring with two more runs on an error, started by a single through the right side by Small. Micky Foytik came on for his first collegiate appearance and allowed a two-out unearned run, but closed the door on the season opening victory.

Zach Rumford started the game and pitched four strong, allowing five hits and one run while striking out four batters before turning it over to Grant. Grant picked up the win with four innings on the mound, striking out six while allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits.

The Wildcats got out to the early lead against Molloy as well, as an error brought in Ferrier to open the scoring in the third inning. Molloy tied the game with a single in the fifth off starter Chuck Delagol before taking the lead with two runs in the seventh off reliever John Hetterman.

The comeback started in the eighth for the Wildcats, as they put runners on second and third with no outs in the inning. Gilbert scored on a wild pitch, but Jesse Long was stranded at third base as the Lions came up with three straight outs, keeping the lead 3-2.

Noah Latshaw came on to relieve Zach Frederick and stranded a runner at third base to end the eighth, giving the Wildcats a chance.

Nick Macey started the ninth with a leadoff walk before Small singled back up the middle to put runners on first and third. Hidalgo grounded into a 6-4-3- double play, but the tying run came home from third on the play.

With the bases empty and two outs in the inning, Carney walked to be the spark and Gilbert and Long followed suit with two more base on balls. Ferrier stepped in and doubled to right field, chasing all three runners home in the process. Latshaw gave up a one out walk in the ninth, but got two ground balls to end the game and pick up the win.

Delagol went five while allowing one run on five hits, but striking out three batters. Hetterman also struck out three batters in his 1.2 innings of work while Frederick allowed just one hit in his 1.0 inning.

The Wildcats opening weekend in Myrtle Beach continues with a contest against last season’s East Regional Champion and nationally ranked Franklin Pierce. First pitch is slated for 10:30 a.m.

SUBJECT: Delaware Wins in Thrilling Fashion, Rallies to Defeat Monmouth 11-10 in Overtime in Men’s Lacrosse
DATE:  February 25, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- A furious comeback from a first half deficit, a brilliant performance by a freshman goalkeeper in his first career start, and a goal with 1:04 left in the first overtime period all resulted in a thrilling victory for the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse squad Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens knocked off Monmouth 11-10 at Delaware Stadium.
Delaware sophomore Andrew Romagnoli scored his third goal of the game with 1:04 left in the first overtime to lift the Blue Hens (2-2) to the comeback victory in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
The Blue Hens scored six goals in the third quarter to overcome an early 5-2 deficit in a game that eventually saw the score tied six times in the second half. Delaware appeared to have the game won when Joe Eisele tallied his fourth goal of the game with 3:26 left but Monmouth (2-2) sent the game into overtime when Tyler Keen scored with 17 seconds left in regulation.
Monmouth won the opening faceoff in overtime and got two shots off but Delaware freshman goalkeeper Matt DeLuca saved both and the Hens regained possession. After a timeout with 1:21 left, the Hens worked the ball around until Romagnoli slipped a shot from the left side from 15 yards out for the game winner, setting off a wild celebration on the field.
DeLuca, a freshman who had played just three minutes all season, did not find out he was making his first career start until the pre-game breakfast as Blue Hen starter Parker Ferrigan was home sick in bed. DeLuca finished with 15 saves to highlight a solid defensive effort.
“This was gutsy win for our guys,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw. “We kept grinding away and made some plays. There are no easy teams out there so this was certainly a good win for us. We are pleased to walk away with the victory. It makes it even more exciting to win in this fashion after coming back from being down in the first half and winning in overtime. Our defense played great and Jake (Hervada) was a great against a very good faceoff specialist. We had complete confidence in Matt (DeLuca). We have two very good goalkeepers and while we are disappointed Parker couldn’t experience this today, we are excited for Matt. He made some great saves.”
The Hawks, who earlier this season knocked off nationally-ranked Villanova, jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second quarter and went into halftime up 5-2. But the Hens scored five of the first six goals of the second half in a span of 10 minutes, including two by Romagnoli, to take a 7-6 lead. The game was tied two more times, setting up the overtime session.
Eisele finished with a game-high four goals while Romagnoli scored three times and dished out an assist, Will Hirschmann had a goal and two assists, and Charlie Kitchen had a goal and an assist. Hervada won 14 of 24 faceoffs for the Blue Hens.
Monmouth, which held a 42-29 advantage in shots, including a 20-12 first half edge, got three goals and an assist from Bryce Wasserman and two goals each from Keen and Dan Bloodgood.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
• Shillinglaw won his 329th career game, including his 305th at Delaware
• The game was Delaware’s fifth overtime game since the 2015 season and first since a 6-5 loss to Drexel on Apr. 23, 2016
• Delaware will continue action Tuesday, Feb. 28, when the Hens head to VMI for a 3 p.m. game in Lexington, Va.
• Delaware freshman Charlie Kitchen is the first player in UD history to have multiple points in each of his first four career games
• Romagnoli has now scored a point in eight straight games since last season

Goldey-Beacom once again battled against Newberry and was dealt a pair of losses, 19-1 and 11-5, in Newberry, SC.

Game one saw Newberry plate seven runs in the second inning to open a 10-0 lead. Robert Kosch opened the scoring in the frame with a two-run single and Ben Herring delivered the key blow with a three-run homer.

Goldey-Beacom got its lone run in the seventh when senior CJ Wood (Newark, DE) lifted a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Calvin Clark (Millville, NJ).

Old Bridge, NJ sophomore Brandon Abdul (0-2) permitted 10 runs and 11 hits over 1 1/3 innings for the Lightning, who managed just six hits.

Trejon Smith went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Herring closed with five RBI for the Wolves. Evan Estridge (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings, striking out two with no walks and allowing just three hits.

Newberry in game two busted open things with a five-run fourth inning for a 10-4 lead. After Herring had an RBI single and Daymon Totherow drew a bases-loaded walk, Smith cleared the bases with a three-run double.

Junior Keegan Marsden (Stratford, ON) homered twice for the Lightning, each a solo shot that gives him four long balls on the year. He also closed with three of his squad’s eight hits.

Freshman Tevin Thomas (Dover, DE) recorded a hit in each contest and is the only player for the Lightning to get a hit in all six games this season. Wauseon, OH junior Jake Trejo (0-2) allowed 10 runs – eight earned – and 10 hits over four innings with five strikeouts for GBC (0-6).

Herring and Danton Hyman had three hits apiece and Smith amassed five RBI for Newberry (7-8). Hunter Hill allowed four runs and five hits over four innings with three strikeouts.

The teams will conclude their four-game series Sunday, beginning at noon.

SUBJECT: Shippensburg Uses Final Run to Secure 13-9 Victory over Wilmington Women’s Lacrosse in Season Opener

DATE: February 25, 2017
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - in a game of three-goal surges, Shippensburg had the last say in the 2017 season opener, defeating the Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team, 13-9, at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats (0-1) answered every Raider (1-0) run with a goal streak of their own, but the Raiders were able to produce the last laugh, separating themselves from the Wildcats down the stretch.

The game started with the Raiders jumping out to a 3-0 lead before the Wildcats were able to find their offensive groove. Megan Card produced the first goal of the 2017 season for the Wildcats followed by back-to-back goals from Gabby Spalt to tie the game with 10:39 left in the half.

But back came the Raiders, scoring the next three goals of the contest to take a 6-3 lead with 4:25 on the clock before the break. Alexis Olsen buried her free position shot to end the streak before Card added another with 10 seconds left to put the Wildcats only down one at the half.

Out of the break, Spalt quickly tied the game with her third goal of the day but the Raiders once again had an answer for the Wildcats. Allison Fugate assisted on the first and scored the next two goals for the Raiders to once again grab a 9-6 advantage with 22:03 to play.

Lashay Ross scored her first collegiate career goal to break up the Raiders’ momentum, but Shippensburg responded with another free position goal to again take a 10-7 lead. Ross converted another shot before Auryonah Nash scored her first collegiate career goal with 5:54 to play to close the gap to 10-9.

Still trailing by one, Zameria Jones came up with the turnover the Wildcats needed, stripping the Raiders offensive player and scooping up the ground ball. Followed a good clear attempt, however, the Wildcats turned the ball over themselves with 2:54 remaining and the Raiders took advantage.

Shippensburg scored out of a timeout to move ahead 11-9 and the Wildcats couldn’t recover another draw control. The Raiders tacked on two more down the stretch to secure the victory, 13-9.

Spalt led the Wildcats with a hat trick while Card and Ross added two goals each. Card added an assist for three points on the day. Ross also led the team with six draw controls while Nash, Card, and Christina Ziegler added two draws each. Maddie Hurm made eight saves in goal for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats take off for Florida to compete in their next two contests, first with a game against Keiser on Monday afternoon. The opening draw is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: No. 7 Franklin Pierce Uses Big Sixth Inning to Take Down Wilmington Baseball, 7-2

DATE: February 25, 2017

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - A five-run sixth inning hindered the Wilmington University baseball team against nationally seventh ranked Franklin Pierce on Saturday, as the Ravens went on to a 7-2 victory on day two of the team’s trip to Myrtle Beach and the Ripken Experience.

The Wildcats (2-1) couldn’t get the bats going as freely as they did on Friday, collecting just five hits while giving up eight hits and five earned runs. Franklin Pierce was able to get to the bullpen of the Wildcats after Sean Deely produced five strong innings in his Wildcats debut.

The Wildcats did strike first however, as Rocky Ferrier hit a one out triple to right in the third. Julian Kurych was able to get one deep enough into the outfield for the sacrifice fly and the 1-0 lead.

Deely dealt the first five innings of the game, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out a pair. He was able to induce a 6-4-3 double play in the second inning after the first two Ravens collected hits to start the inning.

But things unraveled for the Wildcats in the top of the sixth, as the Ravens scored a pair on a dropped third strike and throwing error to start the frame. Franklin Pierce than loaded the bases with only one out in the inning before a double brought in two more for the 4-1 lead. Another passed ball in the inning allowed the fifth and final run to cross the plate for the 5-1 lead.

The Wildcats had two runners on with only one out in the seventh, but the Ravens were able to escape without any damage. They also added a pair of two-out runs in the top of the eighth to extend the lead once more.

The Wildcats again threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with only one out. An fielder’s choice and error allowed a run to come home and keep the bases loaded, but the Ravens once against escaped without further damage, picking up a strikeout and a line out to end the frame.

Ferrier went 2-for-5 with a triple while Mike Annone, Nick Macey, and Max Carney also collected hits in the loss. Rudy Gervolino was saddled with the loss by allowing five runs (three earned) in the sixth inning.

The Wildcats wrap up their Myrtle Beach trip on Sunday with another NE-10 program, as they square off against New Haven starting at 12:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Record Breaking Season Comes to an End as Caldwell Upsets Wilmington Men’s Basketball, 81-74, in CACC Quarterfinals

DATE: February 25, 2017

NEWARK, Del. - - A large first half hole was too deep to climb out of for the Wilmington University men’s basketball team as they fell to Caldwell, 81-74, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (19-10) earned the South Division’s No. 2 seed by virtue of a 14-5 conference record during the season. They hosted the Cougars (17-11), the North Division’s No. 3 seed, in the program’s first ever home playoff game.

Playing in front of a packed house, it was the visitors that jumped out in front early in the first half. Leading 13-8, the Cougars went on a 9-4 spurt to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 22-12, with 10:08 to play in the first half. The lead continued to balloon to 32-15 and eventually 40-24 with another three-pointer. Caldwell ended the first half with another three-pointer, going into the break on top, 44-26.

The visitors shot 15-of-28 from the floor in the first half, hitting 6-of-11 from beyond the three-point arc. The Wildcats went just 8-of-28 from the floor, 3-of-11 from deep, and just 7-of-12 from the foul line.

The lead grew to as large as 20 points early in the second half, as the Cougars came out of the break with a dunk from Eric Johnson-Alford. The Wildcats didn’t start to claw back until the 17:30 mark, still down 48-28.

Tyaire Ponzo-Meek started a much needed 11-0 run with a pair from the free throw line and capping it with a three-pointer to get to within 48-39 with 14:45 showing on the clock. The Cougars were able to stem the tide and keep the Wildcats at an arms length until a Nick Richards three pointer had the Wildcats to within 58-48 once more. An offensive rebound and put-back by Richards brought the Wildcats to within striking distance, 58-51, with 7:50 to play in regulation.

Caldwell had an answer, however, as the Cougars went on an 11-3 run to extend the lead back out to 15 points with less than five minutes to play. Brian Adkins tried to get the Wildcats going offensively, hitting back-to-back three-pointer to again get it to single digits at 69-60. But Derek Dorn came down and stuck a three-pointer of his own, hitting the shot despite being heavily guarded. The Cougars would go 9-of-14 from the foul line from that point forward, keeping the margin between nine and 11 until the end of the game.

Ponzo-Meek ended his illustrious career with 30 points on Saturday, shooting 9-of-20 from the floor, hitting three three-pointers, and going perfect 9-of-9 form the foul line. He finished his career with a program record 1,808 career points and 174 career steals while finishing second all-time with 533 rebounds and 336 career assists.

Richards finished with 18 points on 8-of-19 shooting while Omari Dill-Pettiford and Brian Adkins chipped in with 10 points each.

The Wildcats shot 25-of-63 (39.7%) from the floor for the game, including just 10-of-29 (34.5%) from three-point territory.

The 19 wins are an NCAA era record for the Wildcats, besting their previous win total by eight wins. It is the first time the team finished above .500 on the year, both overall and in CACC play.

ELON, N.C
. – Dmitri Thompson scored 22 points and Elon thrived at the free throw line as the Phoenix posted an 81-59 Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball victory over Delaware in both teams’ regular season finale Saturday night at Alumni Gym.
Thompson notched his second straight 20-point game for Elon, which improved to 18-13 overall and 10-8 in league play. Dainan Swoope added 14 points and Steven Santa Ana contributed 10 off the bench for the Phoenix, which knocked down 10 three-pointers and finished 25 of 36 from the foul line.
Delaware, which dropped its third straight while falling to 12-19 overall and 5-13 in the CAA, was again led by freshman Ryan Daly who finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Eric Carter added 12 points and eight rebounds, wile Anthony Mosley chipped in seven points and four steals. Cazmon Hayes scored five points on the night, becoming the 33rd player in UD history to reach the 1,000-point mark.
The Blue Hens shot just 35.5 percent from the floor, including a 4 of 24 performance from three-point range.
“Congratulations to Elon, they’re hard to guard and I love the way they play,” Delaware head coach Martin Ingelsby said. “They have a lot of weapons, and we didn’t do a good job of guarding the three-point line in the opening half. We lost control of the game in the middle of the first half, and could never really get back into it. We just didn’t have enough offensive firepower, and missed too many free throws in the second half.”
Delaware led for the first nine minutes of the game, and was still down just a point at 22-21 after a follow by Carter at the 7:28 mark. However Elon erupted for an 11-point spurt over the next three and a half minutes, going in front by 12 on a Santa Ana three-pointer.
Carter ended with the run with another bucket, while a late layup by Daly cut the Phoenix margin to 40-29 at the break.
Elon’s lead stayed between eight and 13 points through the first 10 minutes of the second half, before Chivarsky Corbett drilled a three-pointer and Carter added a basket to bring the Blue Hens within 54-47 with 9:27 to play. However Brian Dawkins answered with a layup before Thompson added five points to push the margin back to 14, and Delaware did not get within single digits the rest of the way.
The Blue Hens will be the ninth seed in next week’s CAA Tournament, and will face eighth-seeded Hofstra on Friday at 6 p.m. in the first round at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Game Notes:
• Daly reached double figures for the ninth straight game, the second longest streak by a UD freshman (Devon Saddler, 13 in 2010-11)
• The Phoenix held a 42-36 rebounding advantage
• Delaware handed out just five assists, tying a season-low
• Elon improved to 6-1 all-time vs. Delaware and avenged a 76-74 overtime loss to the Blue Hens on Feb. 9 in Newark
• The Phoenix is now 3-0 against Delaware in Alumni Gym

SUBJECT: Wilmington Baseball ends Myrtle Beach Trip with Loss to New Haven, 7-3

DATE: February 26, 2017
djl

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - Missed opportunities loomed large for the Wilmington University baseball team as it fell to New Haven, 7-3, on the final day of the Northeast Challenge at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.

The Wildcats (2-2) collected nine hits in the game but left 11 runners on bases, while New Haven (4-0) was able to convert on its chances, collecting nine hits as well but only leaving five runners on base.

The Chargers got on the board first with a run in the top of the second inning before adding two more in the top of the third on an RBI single and a failed pickoff attempt at third base.

The Wildcats were able to get back into the game in the home half of the third inning with a pair of two-out RBIs. Logan Gilbert started the inning with a lead off double, but he was still on second as two outs were recorded. Max Carney stepped in and singled to right, putting the Wildcats on the board as Gilbert came home. A hit by pitch loaded the bases and Nick Macey walked to bring in the second run of the inning to bring the Wildcats to within 3-2. But the Wildcats left the bases loaded as the Chargers were able to induce a foul out to end the inning.

A double and a walk started the fifth inning for the Chargers and a double to left brought in two more runs for New Haven. The Wildcats left two on in the sixth and had a chance in the seventh to get back in the ball game. Rocky Ferrier started the inning with a single followed by a walk and a Mike Annone infield single to load the bases without an out recorded.

But that was quickly erased as Frank Nigro sharply lined a pitch but right at the third baseman who made the catch and flipped it to second for the double play. Kendall Small than flew out to right to end the inning and the threat, keeping the game at 5-2.

Another double brought in a run for the Chargers in the top of the ninth before a throwing error settled the score at 7-2. The Wildcats late game comeback fell short in the bottom of the ninth, as they were only able to get one run despite collected three straight singles and had runners on first and second with one out. Annone brought in the inning’s run with a hot shot to center, scoring Ferrier.

Ferrier, Carney, Annone, and Gilbert collected two hits each for the Wildcats with Gilbert’s double being the only extra base hit.

Brad Scull took the loss while pitching into the fifth inning, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits. He struck out five batters while allowing two walks as well. Justin Mears made his Wildcats debut with four innings pitched, striking out three while only giving up two hits.

The Wildcats have a week off before returning to action with their annual trip to South Florida. They will return to the diamond on March 6 with a doubleheader against Stonehill on the campus of Lynn University.

LEXINGTON, Va.
-- Delaware jumped out to a big 9-4 halftime lead and used an overpowering five-goal fourth quarter to win its second straight game Tuesday afternoon as the Blue Hens men’s lacrosse squad knocked off host VMI 15-9 at Drill Field.
The Blue Hens (3-2), who downed the Keydets for the second straight year and remained unbeaten in four all-time meetings, prevailed thanks to a big finish in the fourth quarter. VMI (1-2) had cut the Delaware lead to 10-8 early in the final stanza but the Blue Hens pulled away, outscoring them 5-1 the rest of the way for the victory.
Delaware sophomore Andrew Romagnoli led all scorers with four goals - his fourth hat trick in five games this season - and also dished out an assist while senior midfielder Steve DeLargy scored three times, including twice in the final 8:09, and dished out an assist.
In all, seven different Blue Hens found the back of the net as senior Trupert Ortlieb scored three times, freshman Charlie Kitchen scored twice and dished out an assist, senior Paul Major had a goal and three assists, senior Will Hirschmann contributed a goal and an assist, and sophomore Campbell Parker scored once.
“We are really pleased to come away with this win today,” said Bob Shillinglaw, who won his 330th career game. “Give credit to VMI as they played hard all four quarters. It was a hard-fought victory for our guys.”
Also for the Blue Hens, freshman Crosby Matthews won 14 of 19 faceoffs attempts and freshman goalkeeper Matt DeLuca, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, turned back eight shots to earn the win in his second straight start.
Romagnoli and Ortlieb each scored three times in the first half to stake the Hens to a 9-4 lead at halftime. VMI used a 4-1 run to pull to within 10-8 eight seconds into the final stanza, but Hirschmann and Romagnoli scored two minutes apart to give the Hens some breathing room and DeLargy put the game away with two goals in the final 8:09.
Delaware held a commanding 53-25 advantage in shots, a 37-31 edge in groundballs, won 16 of 27 faceoffs, and were successful on 21 of 22 clear attempts. The Hens also forced a season-high 17 turnovers.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Hens have started out 2-0 on the road this season, outscoring opponents 33-14 with Ortlieb scoring nine of those goals

• DeLargy, a fifth-year graduate student, notched his third career hat trick
• Kitchen has now scored two or more points in each of his first five collegiate games, a UD record

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – March Madness has come to the Northwestern State basketball team a week earlier than the schedule said it would, and that’s fine with Demons’ coach Mike McConathy.

With two games left in the regular season, beginning Thursday night at 8 with a visit to rival Stephen F. Austin, NSU needs two wins to preserve its hopes of reaching the Southland Conference Tournament next week in Katy, Texas.

“This is what tournament play is about. You win and you stay in, you lose and you’re done,” said the 18th-year head coach, who has guided seven NSU teams to the Southland Tournament finals and three into the NCAA Tournament. “Maybe we needed this, our backs against the wall, to help us become the best we can be. I like the way we’re going about it right now because it’s that level of approach we need to take on the challenges ahead.”

NSU (11-16 overall, 5-11 in the Southland) has won two of its last three, each in dramatic fashion, coming from behind on the road to top Nicholls 80-78 on Feb. 18, and getting the last of 22 lead changes last Saturday on Zeek Woodley’s game-winning layup with 4.3 seconds left to upset league-leading New Orleans 83-82, scoring more points than the Privateers had allowed since Dec. 11.

McConathy senses the Demons peaking at the last moment, bolstered by the return of their leading scorer, Woodley, out for 15 games until last week due to a broken wrist just before Christmas.

“We had a great effort, executed, competed and played hard against UNO. We had probably one of the best practices of the year Tuesday and it’s been an encouraging week,” he said. “I think we’re headed in the right direction, I think we’re doing all the little things, and I know that’s what we need to do in our two games this week.”

If NSU can beat SFA (16-12, 11-5), and Nicholls loses at Lamar Thursday night, the Demons’ postseason hopes hinge on Saturday afternoon’s home game against Central Arkansas along with UNO winning at Nicholls that day.

The Lumberjacks escaped Prather Coliseum Feb. 8 with a 75-73 overtime victory, the latest of nine consecutive SFA wins over NSU dating back to the 2013 Southland Tournament finals won by the Demons.

“Coach Kyle Keller’s done a great job in his first year. They’re in the thick of the race (tied for second, one game back) going to the last week of the season,” said McConathy. “They’ve had a remarkable run in the previous three years, and really, throughout my time as coach they’ve had great success. We’ve had tremendous games with them, with one exception at the end of last season, and the one earlier this year here was indicative of the rivalry.

“Twice, we had the ball at the end, in regulation and overtime, and weren’t able to make the game-winning play. SFA got two stops, then in overtime did a fantastic job getting the ball up the floor for a layup to beat us just before the buzzer,” he said.

Woodley, who scored 28 points in the UNO win and is 26 away from NSU’s 40-year-old career scoring record of 2,009 points by Billy Reynolds (1973-77), didn’t play in the first matchup. He has an 18.3 scoring average, while fellow senior Sabri Thompson is at 13.5 per game and sophomore center Ishmael Lane scores 10.9 per contest and leads the Demons with 6.3 rebounds per game.

SFA has an extremely balanced roster with six players averaging between 11.8 and 8.5 points, led by T.J. Holyfield and Ivan Canete (11.3). The Lumberjacks have won five of their last six, falling 82-65 last Thursday at UNO and escaping UCA with a 90-85 overtime triumph two days later.

Woodley’s approach of Reynolds’ record provides an intriguing subplot for the week, admitted McConathy.

“They’re two great, great players. It’s bittersweet for me, because I’m tied to both players. I played against Billy, I coach Zeek. The pursuit of records like this is so exciting to watch, because when you get in that neighborhood, there’s no doubt you are seeing something extraordinary,” he said.

“Billy just wanted to win. Zeek is the same way. I think as difficult as it has been for him to watch for two months, he’s come out of it with even a greater passion for the game. He’s not yet close to 100 percent of his physical capabilities, but he’s very locked in on anything needed for this team to win.”

The game will be carried through ESPN3 and will be available on the WatchESPN app. It follows a 5:30 women’s contest between the rivals.

The Demon Sports Network will carry both games, flagshipped by 100.7 KZBL FM of Natchitoches. Shreveport’s 92.1 KSYR FM and KWLA FM 103.1 serving Many and Leesville are affiliates, with NSUDemons.com providing an audio stream.

NSU’s final home game is Saturday at 3 on Senior Day in Prather Coliseum in the only game of the week for UCA, which took the first contest on Feb. 2 by 107-97 in Conway.

SUBJECT: Brown and Jardine Lead Delaware Women's Basketball Past Towson, 75-59, on Senior Night
DATE: March 1, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
– Seniors Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) and Hannah Jardine (St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada/O’Donel) were determined to leave it all on the court in their final game at the Bob Carpenter Center, and they did just that Wednesday evening.
The pair combined for 37 points, including seven 3-pointers, as Delaware picked up the 75-59 victory over Towson in the regular season finale for both squads.
Brown (at left) finished the night with 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor while Jardine tallied 12 points on a season-high four treys to go along with five rebounds.
Sophomore Nicole Enabosi (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) added 10 points and 11 rebounds for her 16th double double of the season.
The Blue Hens (16-13, 10-8 CAA) jumped out to an early lead and went up by as much as 17 points in the first quarter and never looked back in the victory.
Sianni Martin and Raven Bankston each notched 16 points for the Tigers (12-17, 5-13 CAA) while Mary Cuevas grabbed 11 rebounds.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Tina Martin

“I thought we shared the ball and had energy; I thought we came out rested and ready to go. The kids had energy because it’s senior day. Erika and Hannah are well-respected by their teammates and they weren’t going to lose their senior day on their home floor. I’m really happy with how we’re playing, and I thought the kids really came together. I feel good that we got our 16th win, and we have a winning season again. I feel good that the kids gave a lot of good effort and stayed together through everything. I think the kids really hung tough and did a good job.”
Senior co-captain Erika Brown
“Tonight was a great last game for Hannah and me. Every year that we have been here we try and go out on senior night and try and win for the seniors. Tonight was the first time that we’ve won on senior night in four years, so I’m just happy that my team played hard for us, and that we got a win. That’s the best way to leave the Bob Carpenter Center.”
“Everything was going in early on. As long as we stay confident, set our feet and don’t rush, and we look for people to get open shots. I think we made a lot of good decisions, and they didn’t really have an answer because everyone was making shots.”
Senior co-captain Hannah Jardine
“We haven’t won a senior night game since I’ve been here, so it was great because my family was here and we were able to get the win. Obviously they came back a bit in the fourth quarter, but we handled it. This is stuff we’re going to see next week at the CAA Tournament so it prepared us for that.”
“Whenever you make your first shot it gives you confidence, and I think during the first half we really shared the ball and got everyone equal opportunities which really got us going. I think we got away from that toward the end, we got us in trouble. The way we were sharing the ball got us some open shots and open looks.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS
· With the win and a William & Mary victory over Drexel, the Tribe secure the No. 4 seed while the Hens will be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament.

· Delaware shot 64.3 percent (9-of-14) in the first quarter, including four 3-pointers.
· The Hens tied a season-high with eight 3-pointers made.
· UD scored 75 points for the first time since December 7, 2015 when the Hens tallied 83 at George Mason.
· The Blue Hens honored seniors Erika Brown and Hannah Jardine, in addition to senior athletic training student Jennifer Worrall, in a pre-game ceremony.

Men's Basketball Falls In MAAC Opening Round

The Red Foxes Season Ends With Tough Loss To Canisius

ALBANY, New York – The #10th-seeded Marist Men’s Basketball team fell to the #7 seed Canisius Golden Griffins, 77-73, in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship. The loss ends the Red Foxes’ season.

Brian Parker led the Red Foxes in scoring with 22 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the field. Khallid Hart scored 16 points for the Red Foxes, and Kentrall Brooks was the Red Foxes’ third scorer in double-digits with 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field.

The Red Foxes entered the half trailing by just four, 36-32, despite 11 turnovers. The Marist defense was able to force the Griffs into eight turnovers of their own but a 14-8 scoring disparity in points off turnovers had Canisius ahead.

Hart led Marist in the first half, scoring 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field. Brooks added six points on 3-for-4 shooting from the floor and Brian Parker contributed with six points and four rebounds of his own.

Forced turnovers and forays to the basket by Isaiah Lamb helped keep Marist afloat in the first half as he went 0-for-1 from the field but knocked down four free throws.

After Parker started the new half with a basket to cut the deficit to two, Canisius rattled off a 10-1 run to take a 46-35 lead with 16:33 to go in the game.

An and-one from Parker, a deep triple by Funk, and a tough take to the hoop and an acrobatic lay-up from Hart would spark an 8-0 run for the Red Foxes that would pull them back to within three, 51-48.

Canisius would build the lead up again to as much as eight before back-to-back takes from Funk and Richie Mitchell would cut the Griffs lead down to four, 60-56, with 9:52 to go.

A monster baseline jam from Ryan Funk with just over seven minutes to go cut the Red Foxes deficit to just one. A defensive stop and then another hoop plus the harm from Parker would put the Red Foxes ahead for the first time since three minutes into the game.

With under two minutes to go in the game Canisius would capitalized off another Marist turnover, knocking down a triple to take the lead again, 70-69. The Griffs would stave off a Red Foxes comeback and hold on to win from there.

The Marist men's basketball team finished the season with an overall record of 8-24. This was the final game for the 2017 senior class of Khallid Hart and Kentrall Brooks. Hart finishes his career as Marist’s fourth all-time leading scorer (1,879 points).

Fri, March 03, 2017
Dover, Del. (Mar. 3, 2017) --- The Delaware State men’s basketball team will play its 2017 MEAC Tournament opener against Bethune-Cookman in a first round contest on Tuesday, Mar. 7 at 4 p.m. at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va. The Hornets are the tournament’s eighth seed, while the Wildcats are seeded ninth.

The winner of the DSU/Bethune-Cookman contest will face No. 1 seed North Carolina Central on Wednesday (Mar. 8) at 6 p.m.

Delaware State and Bethune-Cookman met once during the 2016-17 regular season. The Hornets won the contest 88-82 in overtime on Feb. 4 in Daytona Beach, Fla. DeAndre Haywood led four Delaware State players in double figures with 17 points, including his 1000th career point, in the game. Bethune-Cookman’s Quinton Forrest led all players with 28 points (12-19 FG) in the regular season meeting between the teams.

Delaware State and Bethune-Cookman have met three times in the MEAC Tournament, most recently in 2010, a 57-55 quarterfinal win by the Hornets. DSU also defeated the Wildcats 66-43 in the 2005 MEAC Tournament quarterfinals. Bethune-Cookman won the first tournament contest between the teams 64-63 in the 1987 quarters.

North Carolina Central is the No. 1 seed in the 2017 MEAC Tournament by virtue of its regular season title. Norfolk State, Morgan State and Hampton round out the top four seeds. Hampton is seeking its third straight tournament championship.

This year’s title game is set for Saturday, Mar. 11 at 1 p.m., and will be televised live on ESPN2.

Delaware State has an all-time record of 26-45 in the MEAC Tournament. The Hornets won their only tournament championship in 2005, and also made title game appearances in 1991, ’93, 2006, 2007 and 2015.

Fri, March 03, 2017
Statesboro, Ga. (Mar. 3, 2017) ---The Delaware State softball team pounded out 18 hits in a 16-0 win over South Carolina State for the Hornets’ first win of the season in the opening game of the Georgia Southern Eagle Classic today. DSU dropped its second tournament game 9-0 to Eastern Kentucky to fall to 1-5 this season.

In the South Carolina State contest, the Hornets exploded for 13 runs on 11 hits, including two home runs, in the second inning.

After a scoreless first inning, Delaware State broke an 18-inning shutout streak in the second.

Micaela Cummings smacked her first career home run, a three-run shot to left, to open the scoring. The Hornets led 5-0 when Vanessa Washington launched a two-run blast over the fence in center field to continue the hit parade. The home run was Washington’s first of the season and 22nd of her career.

Delaware State opened up an 8-0 lead when Sabrina Quarles drew a bases loaded walk. Dani Velez and Desiree Moreno each had two-run singles, while Jasmine Melgoza had a run-scoring hit later in the second.

DSU sent 18 batters to the plate in the inning.

Cummings drove in her fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the third inning to give the Hornets a 14-0 lead.

Delaware State closed out the scoring when Moreno hit her first career home run, a two-run shot to right, in the fourth inning.

Moreno was 3-for-3 with five runs batted in, while Cummings has two hits and four RBI. Washington and Velez drove in two runs each.

Alexis Goldsby threw four shutout innings, allowing six hits, to earn the win for the Hornets. Hannah Shields pitched a perfect fifth, striking out one, for DSU.

The game was halted after SC State batted in the fifth due to the eight-run rule.

In the Eastern Kentucky contest, the Hornets had six hits, including two by Velez (2-for-2), but failed to score. EKU starter Mollie Paulick threw four shutout innings, striking out three and walking two.

Rachel Minogue and Amber Murray homered for the Colonels. Murray’s was a three-run shot in EKU’s six-run fifth inning to end the game.

Starter Jess Shalongo allowed five hits and the first three Eastern Kentucky runs to suffer the loss for the Hornets.

Delaware State will face Presbyterian in the Georgia Southern Classic on Saturday, and close out the tourney with games against Marshall and Georgia Southern on Sunday.

SUBJECT: Delaware Men's Basketball Battles to the End, Suffers 91-82 Setback to Top Seed UNCW in CAA Quarterfinals
DATE: March 4, 2017
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C.
-- The University of Delaware men’s basketball team cut a 20-point deficit to seven late in the second half but could not get closer as the Blue Hens dropped a 91-82 verdict to top-seeded UNCW in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum.
The Blue Hens, the ninth seed in the tournament and coming off Friday’s 81-76 win over Hofstra in the first round, end their season with a 13-20 record. The Seahawks improved to 27-5 and advanced to the CAA Semifinals on Sunday afternoon.
Delaware guard Ryan Daly capped his fantastic freshman season with game-highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds, posting his sixth double-double of the year and his second in as many days. Anthony Mosley contributed 20 points on the afternoon, one shy of his season-high, while Darian Bryant chipped in 14 for the Blue Hens. Senior guard Cazmon Hayes supplied nine points and five rebounds in his final game for Delaware, which shot 57.7 percent from the floor.
UNCW shot 50.9 percent from the field and put five players in double figures, including a team-high 17 points from sophomore guard C.J. Bryce. Jordon Talley came off the bench to score 16 points, 12 coming on free throws, while Denzel Ingram contributed 15 points and eight assists.
“UNCW is really good and tough to defend because they have so many weapons,” Delaware head coach Martin Ingelsby said. “I’m really proud of our group, and the resiliency they showed cutting a 20-point deficit to seven. Anthony Mosley got into a good rhythm, and we went small to spread them out and were able to get back in the game, we just couldn’t get enough stops. I thank the seniors, and am excited about the guys we have returning next year. We played well during our two games down here, which gives us great momentum heading into the offseason.”
UNCW took a 41-32 lead into the break, and quickly extended the margin to 12 early in the second half before consecutive triples by Daly and Bryant made it a 46-40 game with 17:28 left. The Blue Hens were still within eight at 55-47 after a Hayes layup, but UNCW scored the next nine points to go in front 64-47 with 12:05 remaining.
The Seahawks led by as many as 20 and were still up 74-57 at the six-minute mark, but Delaware hit six straight field goal attempts and used a quick 10-0 run to pull within seven on two Mosley free throws with 4:15 to play.
The Blue Hens got within seven twice more, the final time at 80-73 on a Mosley three-point play at the 2:07 mark, but would not get closer the rest of the way.
Delaware trailed 15-8 early on before five straight points from Daly brought the Blue Hens within a pair at 15-13, but the Seahawks answered with five of their own to go up 20-13 at the 12:03 mark of the opening half. An Eric Carter dunk off a feed from Bryant cut the UD deficit to 27-26 with six minutes remaining in the half, while a leaner by Daly had the Blue Hens within three at 35-32. But Delaware went scoreless over the final 2:24 of the period, as UNCW closed with a six-point spurt to take a 41-32 lead into the halftime break.
Game Notes:
• UNCW has won all five postseason meetings between the two schools
• The Seahawks improved to 22-11 vs. the Blue Hens, with five straight wins in the series
• Delaware fell to 4-8 in CAA Quarterfinal games
• Hayes tied the school record by appearing in his 124th career game
• Daly notched his 11th 20-point game of the season and finishes the season with a UD freshman record 511 points
• The Blue Hens shot over 50 percent during five games on the year, including all three vs. UNCW

THE GAME
The Lady Hornets (3-26; 2-14 MEAC regular season) hobble into the MEAC Tournament as the No. 12 seed. Delaware State brings an eight-game losing streak into the tournament, including a 93-76 setback to Howard in the regular season finale last Thursday. NaJai Pollard led the Lady Hornets with 26 points and nine rebounds. DSU played the game without Mikah Aldridge , Ivana Negron and Kia Abrams due to injuries. Pollard, who was named to the 2016-17 All-MEAC First Team last week, has put together one of the most outstanding seasons in team history. She leads the league in scoring (18.6 ppg), rebounding (9.8 pg) and field goal percentage (.540) entering the tournament. Aldridge is second on the team and sixth in the league in scoring at 13.5 points per game. She ‘s also second in the MEAC in three-point field goals, knocking down 2.3 per game.

SUBJECT: Ninth Inning Rally Comes Up Short vs. Rider as Delaware Baseball Falls 4-3 in Home Opener
DATE: March 5, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware dropped its home opener Sunday, falling to Rider 4-3 at Bob Hannah Stadium in the opening day of the Bob Hannah Invitational.
“We’re 2-6, but we’re playing ok baseball,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “We’ve gotten four really good pitching performances in losses, and just not gotten any offense which is surprising because we thought our strength was going to be offense. I know it’s going to be there at some point, we’re just slow out of the gate. So that’s another wasted effort out of Walter and Marinaccio. We just have to be better at the plate. Today there were some routine plays that we didn’t make out there that hurt us. We’re not swinging the bats well enough right now to overcome those mistakes."
Entering the final inning trailing by a run, the Blue Hens (2-6) received a lead off walk from Calvin Scott and a clutch pinch-hit single by freshman Andrew Reich to put runners on first and second with one out.
After Kevin Mohollen bunted the runners to second and third, senior catcher Nick Tierno popped up to the left fielder.
The Broncs (3-4) then intentionally walked Jordan Glover to load the bases for senior designated hitter Doug Trimble, who smoked a line drive that Rider third baseman Christian Estevez was able to snare for the final out of the ballgame.
On the mound, the Blue Hens received another great start from ace Brandon Walter, who pitched seven and two-thirds innings, allowing just one earned run recording seven strikeouts in the process.
Offensively, the Blue Hens received a two-RBI triple from Scott in the second inning and an RBI single from Trimble in the fifth.
The Blue Hens return to the diamond Monday morning when they will place Rider again (11 a.m.) before closing the day with a game against Delaware State (2:30 p.m.).
In the opening game of the Bob Hannah Invitational Sunday, the Broncs defeated Delaware State 4-2.
Junior Captain Nick Spadafino is projected to face off with Rider's Harrison McClure in the opener tomorrow while lefty Kevin Milley will oppose Delaware State's Garrett Lawson in the finale of the Bob Hannah Invitational.
“Looking ahead to tomorrow we just need to continue to get good pitching and we have to play better situational defense. I thought at the end we almost had a walk off hit. Dougie hit a screamer right down the line that was just right at the kid. We need to do a better job of coming through with runners in scoring position,” Sherman added.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
· Mohollen has reached base in all eight games this season
· Walter has now thrown at least six innings in 12 of his last 15 starts.
· Ron Marinaccio stuck out one batter in 1.1 innings of work, and has not allowed a run in his last four innings of work. He has allowed just one run in five appearances this season.
· Trimble stole his fifth base of the year, when he and Glover double stole in the fifth
· Jeremy Ake produced his second multiple hit game this season.
· Tierno has now thrown out four base runners in his five starts behind the plate.

SUBJECT: Delaware Bats Stay Hot as Hens Down UMBC 17-6 for Third Straight Baseball Win
DATE: March 7, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- Behind 10 extra base hits, 17 runs, and 19 hits, the University of Delaware baseball team defeated UMBC 17-6 at Bob Hannah Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
“Today and yesterday (at 15-5 win over Delaware State) were certainly the offensive performances we were expecting coming into the year,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “Today our offensive approach early was excellent. Nick (Tierno) and Kevin (Mohollen) had great games, and (Matt) Hornich was solid on the mound. We now have to try and keep it going as we head toward the weekend and another two tough teams coming in here.”
Nick Patten and Brian Mayer each homered for the second consecutive day and the Blue Hens received a pair of triples from outfielder Kevin Mohollen and second baseman Nick Tierno en route to posting another lopsided win.
On the mound, the Blue Hens (5-6) received a good outing from starter Matt Hornich. Hornich (2-1) went six innings, scattering six hits and two runs against the Retrievers (1-6).
At the plate, Delaware produced two home runs, four doubles, and four triples. Every member of the starting lineup produced a hit and five players scored multiple runs. In addition, six Delaware players produced multiple hits and five players drove in multiple runs.
In total the Hens had five innings where they scored two runs or more, including scoring four in the third and five in the seventh.
The Blue Hens have now won three in a row and five of their last six games. Delaware has now scored 15 runs or more in consecutive games for the first time since April of 2015.
Delaware will look for its fourth consecutive win in a row on Friday when the Blue Hens welcome in Binghamton and Wagner for the Delaware Invitational.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware tied a program record by producing four triples for the game. This was the first time that the Blue Hens produced that many three-baggers since May 10, 2002 against William & Mary.
• Mohollen went 3-3 with two triples and three runs scored and raised his batting average by nearly 60 points to .333
• Mayer has thrown out six runners this season in his six starts.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Softball Bounces Back with Sweep of Le Moyne, 5-0, and Findlay, 5-4, on Day Two in Florida

DATE: March 7, 2017
djl

CLERMONT, Fla. - - A walk-off single capped a good comeback performance for the Wilmington University softball team on day two of their Florida trip, as it defeated Le Moyne, 5-0, before walking off against Findlay, 5-4, at the National Training Center on Tuesday.

After a pair of losses on Monday to start the week, the Wildcats (5-5) answered back with a pair of wins, collecting 20 hits combined in the two games.

The Wildcats jumped out in front of East Region foe Le Moyne early before tacking on insurance runs later in the game to secure the victory. It was Rosa’Lynn Burton was the catalyst once again for the Wildcats.

Burton doubled down the left field line to start the bottom of the first before getting moved over to third by Alyssa Velasquez. Kaitlyn Slater put the Wildcats on the board with a squeeze bunt, scoring Burton for the 1-0 lead.

Jayme Richardson led off the third inning with bunt single before another infield single put runners on first and third with one out. Slater added another RBI single, scoring Richardson and Mirabella Klebart capped the third with a single down the right field line, giving the Wildcats the 3-0 lead.

A wild pitch scored a run in the bottom of the fifth before Jazmeen Llamas scored in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout by Velasquez.

On the other side of the ball, sophomore Caitlyn Whiteside only gave up four hits while only walking one in the complete game shutout. She struck out a pair for her third complete game shutout of the season.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats needed to use a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to secure the sweep despite leading 4-1 going into the top of the seventh.

The Wildcats scored twice in the bottom of the third to break a 1-1 tie. Llamas scored on a throwing error on a double steal before Velasquez singled through the left side to bring home Burton. Becca Stanley came home in the bottom of the fourth inning following a Danielle Bradley infield single.

But with one out and runners on first and second in the top of the seventh for the Oilers, Madison Arnold tied the game with one swing of the bat, homering to center for the three-run bomb. Bradley was able to get out of the inning though, giving the bats one more chance with the game tied 4-4.

And the Wildcats came through.

Llamas started the inning with a single back to the pitcher before Burton put runners on first and second with no outs with another infield single. Velasquez leaded the bases with a bunt single, setting up the walk-off. Slater took a pitch back up the middle and into center field, scoring Llamas for the win.

Bradley struck out eight while giving up five hits for the win, improving to 2-2 on the year.

Burton went 2-for-4 against Le Moyne before adding a 4-for-4 performance against Findlay. Velasquez added two hits in each game as well while slater had three hits in the doubleheader.

The Wildcats return to action at the NTC on Wednesday when they play Wayne State (Neb.) and Stonehill. Their day starts with a 9:00 a.m. first pitch before playing Stonehill at 2:00 p.m.
