Goldey-Beacom Softball Dealt a Pair of Losses by West Chester

Goldey-Beacom played down to the wire against West Chester in a 2-0 game-one loss before being handed a 10-0 setback in the finale at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

A classic pitchers’ duel was on tap in the opener with Lightning sophomore Alyssa Giampolo (East Windsor, NJ) and the Golden Rams’ Brooke Harner doing battle. The two over the first five innings refused to give an inch with the game scoreless.

West Chester broke through in the sixth when Sara Ercolani lined an RBI single to left that scored Sarah Walasavage. Heidi McCollester provided insurance in the seventh with a home run to left field.

Senior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) doubled and sophomore Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) tripled for the Lightning’s only hits. Giampolo (1-5) struck out three over seven innings, but yielded two runs and five hits.

Bri Garber went 3-for-3 and Harner (4-0) struck out seven over seven innings.

West Chester in game two plated five runs in the top of the sixth for a 10-0 lead. Ercolani delivered the key blow with a two-run double to left-center field and Alyssa Herion lined an RBI double.

Walasavage closed with three hits and Micaela McSpadden recorded two. Amanda Houck (14-2) struck out eight over six innings, allowing eight hits for West Chester.

Murphy had three hits to tie her career best and King had two for the Lightning. Tower City, PA junior Kylie Doyle (2-5) allowed 10 runs – one earned – and 12 hits over six innings with four strikeouts.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Post, beginning at 1:00 pm.

SUBJECT: DeMora’s Blast, Bradley’s One-Hitter Gives Wilmington Softball CACC Split with Dominican

DATE: April 2, 2017
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - A pair of four-run innings decided both games of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Asbury Field on Saturday, with Dominican winning the opener, 4-1, before the Wilmington University softball team came back to earn the split with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.

Dominican (10-9, 3-1 CACC) scored all four runs in its 4-1 victory in the third inning while the Wildcats (14-13, 2-6 CACC) came out and scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to carry them to the 4-0 victory in the nightcap.

The Wildcats scored first in the opener, getting a two-out hit by pitch to come around and score. With Becca Stanley on second base, Meghan Brown doubled over the head of the centerfielder to easily allow Stanley to score for the 1-0 lead.

But the Chargers retaliated with a four-run third inning, all starting with a one-out rally. A single and a double put runners on second and third before the Chargers tied the game on a fielding error. The visitors than picked up an RBI single to move ahead, 2-1, before a two-run, two-out double to center field extended the lead out to 4-1.

The Wildcats tried to make a comeback in the late innings, putting two runners on with two outs in the sixth. Mirabella Klebart singled to center field but Whitney DeMora was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second to end the frame. They made one final effort in the seventh as well, but Colby Wyatt was thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double to lead off the inning. Stanley and Alyssa Velasquez also hit singles in the inning, but Velasquez was caught trying to swipe second base on the play to end the game.

The bottom of the first inning of the nightcap was all junior Danielle Bradley needed, as she spun a one-hit shutout to pick up the split.

Rosa’Lynn Burton singled to start the inning before an error put Jazmeen Llamas on base too. Bradley walked to load the bases with no out, but the Wildcats needed a strike out, wild pitch to ensure their first run. Now with two outs, DeMora stepped in and laced an opposite field home run to right, plating three with her third bomb of the season.

The only hit Bradley gave up in the game was with one out in the top of the second inning, but she needed to work around a few walks and a hit-by-pitch in the game. She left single runners on base in the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning before slamming the door shut with a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.

Bradley walked four batters but only allowed the one hit while striking out two to improved to 5-5 on the year. Burton and DeMora collected two hits each in the nightcap.

The win snapped a six-game losing streak to CACC opponents for the Wildcats. They will look to build upon their win with another CACC doubleheader at Asbury Field on Tuesday. The matchup against Georgian Court is set for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.

SUBJECT: Late Game Magic Ensures CACC Sweep for Wilmington Baseball over Goldey-Beacom in First Ever Meeting

DATE: April 2, 2017
djl

HOCKESSIN, Del. - - Eight runs in the final two innings of the nightcap allowed the Wilmington University baseball team to sweep Goldey-Beacom, 8-2 and 10-9, in their first ever meeting at Doyle Field on Sunday afternoon.

Trailing 9-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Wildcats (15-9, 9-3 CACC) staged an epic comeback in their final two at-bats and then needed a magic trick to escape the top of the seventh for the sweep. Goldey-Beacom (1-19, 1-9 CACC) loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh before Noah Latshaw struck out the next three batters for the sweep.

The opener was the opposite for the Wildcats, as they jumped out to an early lead over the Lightning who is playing in their first year of competition. The Wildcats scored three times in the bottom of the first, added a run in the third, before opening the lead with a three-run fourth. They led, 7-0 after four full innings.

Game one starter Sean Deely struck out nine batters in five innings of work before giving way to the bullpen. He only allowed five hits while walking two in moving to 4-0 on the season.

Rocky Ferrier, Julian Kurych, Mike Annone, Kendall Small, and Max Carney all collected two hits in the opener. Kurych scored three runs while Ferrier and Small added two runs each.

Game two didn’t start off well for the Wildcats but ended in dramatic fashion.

The Lightning opened the scoring with a two-out RBI in the top of the first before the Wildcats tied it on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second. But the Lightning broke the game open with a six-run top of the third inning. They chased game-two starter Chuck Delagol after collecting six runs on five hits. John Hetterman came on to get out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts.

The Lightning tacked two more runs on in the top of the fourth inning and led the Wildcats, 9-2, going into the bottom of the fifth inning. But that is when the Wildcats came to life.

Mike Annone started the frame with a leadoff double before Logan Gilbert walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. An error brought in the inning’s first run before Nick Macey drove in Kendall Small with an RBI single. Max Carny cut the Wildcats’ deficit to 9-5 with a one-out RBI single through the right side.

Reliever Dan Hyatt worked around a leadoff single in the top of the sixth to bring the bats back up to the plate.

The bulk of the work came with two outs in the innings as Annone walked to put runners on first and second. Logan Gilbert started the scoring with an RBI single through the left side. Small singled to right to bring the Wildcats to within 9-8 before Regan Hidalgo put the Wildcats in front with a two-run single with the bases loaded.

The win wasn’t easy, as the Lightning fought back in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back singles started the inning before Goldey-Beacom loaded the bases on an error with no outs. But Noah Latshaw buckled down and struck out the next three batters to earn the save and preserve the sweep.

Hyatt improved to 2-1 on the year with his scoreless inning of work before Latshaw earned his fourth save. Rudy Gervolino struck out three in 2.0 innings of work to get to the back end of the bullpen.

Logan Gilber and Macey led the Wildcats with two hits in the nightcap. Rocky Ferrier, Annone, Gilbert, Small, and Macey all scored two runs each in the win.

The Wildcats return home for their next two CACC doubleheaders, starting with USciences on Tuesday. The doubleheader at Wilson Field is set for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.

RIVERDALE, NYDelany DeMello (Roseville, CA/Roseville) had a pair of hits, but the Rider University softball team was swept at Manhattan, 8-0 and 5-0, Sunday in the Broncs’ league openers. With the setbacks, the Broncs slip to 3-20 (0-2 MAAC), while the Jaspers are now 15-9 (2-0 MAAC).

Manhattan scored three runs in the second inning of Game 1 and never trailed. The run support was all Jaspers starting pitcher Brianna Matazinsky would need, as she hurled a one-hit shutout, striking out six. The Jaspers scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to abbreviate the game.

The Jaspers again jumped on the Broncs in Game 2, scoring twice in the first and three more runs in the second. Kaitlyn Kallert (Woodland Park, NJ/Passaic Valley) pitched four innings of no-hit relief, allowing just one walk, while striking out six. But the Broncs couldn’t get on the scoreboard. The Broncs threatened in the fifth, with Kiera Swank (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) doubling and Brianna Parisio (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) singling to lead off the inning. Rider executed a successful double steal, but the play was nullified by umpire’s interference. A fielder’s choice and a double play got the Jaspers out the inning unscathed.

NOTES
• DeMello took the Game 1 loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks. She struck out three.
Emily Oltman (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) was tagged for the Game 2 loss, with allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits and a walk in 2.0 innings pitched.

BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
• The Broncs managed just four hits on the day, with two coming from DeMello (one in each game) and the other two in succession by Swank and Parisio to open the fifth inning in Game 2.
Amanda Jordan (Somerset, NJ/Franklin Township) and Elyse Cuttic (Easton, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) also reached safely with walks.

ON DECK
The Broncs continue MAAC play Monday, when they travel to Quinnipiac. The twinbill starts at 1 p.m.

SUBJECT: Delaware Baseball Comes Up Short Against La Salle in Liberty Bell Classic Semifinals
DATE: April 4, 2017
PHILADELPHIA
-- The University of Delaware's trip through the Liberty Bell Classic came to an end in the semifinals Tuesday afternoon as the Blue Hen baseball squad dropped a 7-3 decision at La Salle University.

The Blue Hens (15-11), who won their LBC first round game with a decisive 21-6 victory over Rider on Mar. 29, fell behind 7-0 after six innings against LaSalle and just could not muster enough offense late to overcome the early deficit.

“Today we struggled with our focus a bit,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “They were better for the first six innings and we were better the final third of the ball game. Certainly it’s tough to come off a key emotional victory on Sunday (a 5-4 comeback win over William & Mary in 11 innings) and come out flat today. We’ll take this as an opportunity to grow and get better from this. We need to use this as a learning experience heading into Northeastern this weekend.”

La Salle (5-20), which won its seconds straight game, got off to fast start, scoring three times in the first two innings of play. The Explorers extended their lead in the third, scoring their fourth run of the game.

The four-run outburst chased Delaware starter Scott Zimmer from the game after just two innings of work.

Blue Hens reliever Kyle Hinton came on to replace Zimmer and the hard-throwing right-hander threw four solid innings, allowing just two earned runs and striking out four. The Hens received scoreless innings from Colman Vila and Ron Marinaccio in the seventh and eighth innings respectively.

Delaware scored single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth, but could not muster together a big inning to complete a comeback. Jordan Glover (above right) hit his seventh home run of the season in the seventh.

The Hens' best chance to score came in the ninth inning. Shortstop Jeremy Ake led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a line-drive single to center by Calvin Scott.

Diaz Nardo then sent a screaming fly ball that missed going out of the ballpark by a matter of inches. LaSalle reliever Blake James then coaxed back-to-back groundball outs, preserving the win.

Delaware will return to the diamond Wednesday at 6 p.m. with a trip to UMBC. LHP Matt Hornich will pitch for the Hens while Mitchell Wilson will throw for UMBC.

HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware fell to 7-2 when it hits at least one home run.
• Nardo failed to produce a hit in a game for the first time in 12 games but extended his team-best 19 game on-base streak when he walked in the third.
• Nick Tierno has produced a hit in his last nine games.
• Trimble produced his team-best 14th multiple-hit game.

SUBJECT: Chestnut Hill Pulls Away from Wilmington Women’s Lacrosse for 22-5 CACC Victory

DATE: April 4, 2017
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team spotted Chestnut Hill the first four goals of the game and then couldn’t stop the Griffins as they ran away with a 22-5 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

After the Wildcats (4-8, 2-3 CACC) were down 4-0 in the early going, they battled back to within two goals twice, first at 4-2 and then again at 5-3. La’Dae Boykin scored with 8:52 to play in the first half to put the score at 8-5, but then the Wildcats didn’t score again for nearly 40 minutes of game time.

The Griffins (3-7, 3-1 CACC) rattled off the final six goals of the first half to take a 14-5 lead into the break and then scored the first eight goals of the second half to put the game away.

Auryonah Nash scored with 34 seconds showing on the clock to snap the scoreless streak at 39:58 of game time for the Wildcats.

Gabby Spalt and Boykin led the Wildcats with two goals each while Spalt added an assist for three points. Alexis Olsen scored in the first half while Nash rounded out the Wildcat scoring with a goal. Lashay Ross added an assist for the home team.

The Griffins controlled the bulk of the possession of the game, especially in the first half, explained by the 20-9 victory in draw controls. Chestnut Hill gathered more draws, 15-5, in the first half as well.

Julia Galantich led the Griffins with five goals and an assist while Jacklyn O’Leary and Spencer Fitzgerald added four goals each. Samantha Herron controlled 12 of the team’s 20 draw controls on the afternoon.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday when they take on Georgian Court at the WU Athletics Complex. The opening draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Whiteside and Bradley Shut Down Georgian Court as Wilmington Softball Picks Up the Sweep

DATE: April 5, 2017
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - A pair of complete games carried the Wilmington University softball team to a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference sweep over Georgian Court, 3-0 and 6-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Asbury Field.

The two wins were the first CACC sweep for the Wildcats (16-13, 4-6 CACC) on the season, as they road the strong arms of Caitlyn Whiteside and Danielle Bradley in the circle. The bats also came alive for the Wildcats, as they picked up 17 hits combined in the doubleheader.

The Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and that was all Whiteside needed. Rosa’Lynn Burton started the inning with a bunt single before Jazmeen Llamas put runners on first and second with another infield single. Whitney DeMora followed suit with a third straight single for the Wildcats, bringing in Burton from second.

Colby Wyatt made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to center before Meghan Brown added an insurance run with an RBI bunt single.

That was all Whiteside needed, as she only allowed four hits and one walk for her seventh complete game shutout of the season. The Lions (6-20, 5-7 CACC) left four batters on base, but Whiteside was able spread the runners out over four separate innings. Whiteside struck out four batters to improve to 9-5 on the season.

The nightcap was the Bradley show, as she went the distance while only allowing two runs on six hits and two walks. She struck out seven Lion batters to improve to 6-5 on the season.

The bats once again struck early for the Wildcats, as they scored two in the first and tacked on three more in the bottom of the second inning.

After the Lions struck first with a two-out RBI double in the top of the first, the Wildcats answered in the home half of the inning. Bradley did it at the plate as well, starting the inning off with a leadoff single. An error put runners on first and second before another error with DeMora batting brought in the Wildcats’ first run. Wyatt then hit a sacrifice fly to center to put the Wildcats ahead for good, 2-1.

Bradley set the Lions down in order in the second to quickly bring the bats back to the plate. Another Lion error started the inning before Becca Stanley and Alyssa Velasquez loaded the bases with back-t0-back singles. Lexi Baughman gave the Wildcats a 4-1 lead with a two-run single before Bradley was at it again with an RBI single and the 5-1 lead.

Stanley gave the Wildcats another insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, hitting a two-out RBI single through the left side to bring in Wyatt.

The Lions threatened in the sixth, putting runners on first and second with one out. But Bradley got out of the jam with a line drive double play, escaping the inning. She then worked around a leadoff walk in the seventh to close the door on the sweep.

Burton, Bradley, and Brown all collected two hits in the opener while Bradley and Stanley added two hits each in the nightcap.

The Wildcats will look to keep the ball rolling on Thursday as they head to Concordia for another CACC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

In the opener, Ash Grassini smacked a three-run homer and Jada Fields had a two-run shot to lead the Pirates.

Hampton opened the scoring with four runs in the second inning, highlighted by the Fields homer.

The Pirates added a run in the fourth to open up a 5-0 lead.

Delaware State was scoreless until tallying three runs in the top of the sixth to get back into the game. Desiree Moreno and Dani Velez had run-scoring singles in the inning, while the third run crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice.

Hampton responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. The big blow in the inning was the homer by Grassini to give the Pirates a seven-run lead.

Mika Lumsden had two of Delaware State’s seven hits in the game.

Hornet starter Jess Shalongo (1-8) was tagged with the loss.

In game two, Hampton starter Allie Hotetz shut down the Hornets on four hits, while left fielder Taylor Warrick was 4-for-4 with a triple, double and four RBI to lead the Pirates. Warrick doubled in a run in the third inning and smacked a two-run triple in the sixth.

The game was called after Hampton scored its fourth run of the sixth inning due to the eight-run rule.

SUBJECT: Late Game Rally Secures Doubleheader Sweep for Wilmington Softball, 10-0 and 7-6, at Post

DATE: April 8, 2017
djl

WATERBURY, Conn. - - Six runs in their final two at-bats allowed the Wilmington University softball team to come back and defeat Post, 7-6, in the nightcap, earning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference sweep on Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field.

The Wildcats (18-13, 6-6 CACC) jumped all over the Eagles (7-16, 3-8 CACC) in the opener, collecting 11 hits en route to a 10-0 victory in five innings. Trailing 6-1 after five innings in the nightcap, the Wildcats scored three runs in the six and three more in the seventh to come back and earn the CACC sweep, 7-6.

Freshman leadoff batter Rosa’Lynn Burton was the catalyst all afternoon for the Wildcats, going 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored in the opener. She tripled to leadoff the game before coming home to score on a Danielle Bradley single. She again singled to leadoff the third, eventually scoring on a Bradley RBI groundout. An error brought in another Wildcat run before Meghan Brown gave the Wildcats a 4-0 lead with a RBI double.

Burton than got into the RBI game as well, hitting an RBI double for the first run of the fourth. She would eventually come around to score on another Bradley base hit before Colby Wyatt capped the scoring in the fourth with an infield single, putting the Wildcats up, 8-0. Burton than capped the scoring in the top of the fifth inning as well, bringing in two on an RBI single to center for the 10- lead.

That was more than enough for starter Caitlyn Whiteside, as she went the distance for her eighth complete game shutout of the season. She struck out two while only allowing five hits, leaving seven runners on base throughout the game.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap, getting to Bradley with two runs in the first and two more in the second. A two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth gave the Eagles a 6-1 lead with only two innings left.

Burton and Jazmeen Llamas got on to start the sixth before Bradley moved them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Wyatt smacked a two-run double to right center to get the ball rolling. Whiteside followed up with a two-out single to left field, bringing the Wildcats to within 6-4.

Whiteside returned to the circle and shut down the Eagles in the bottom of the sixth and the Wildcats got back to the plate. Keara McCarthy started the rally with a one-out single before a fielder’s choice and a Llamas singled to load the bases. Now with two outs, Wyatt worked a walk to get to within a single run before Brown singled to shortstop to tie the game, 6-6. Whiteside came up clutch again but working another bases loaded walk, putting the Wildcats ahead, 7-6.

The Eagles put the tying run on second with no outs before a sacrifice fly put the runner on third with one out. Whiteside picked up a big strikeouts before inducing a game ending fly ball to left.

Whiteside came on in relief to pitch the final 5.1 innings of the nightcap, striking out three while allowing two runs on three hits. Burton went 2-for-4 with three runs in the nightcap while Llamas went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Wyatt finished 1-for-1 with four RBI in game two.

The Wildcats look to extending their winning streak to five straight on Sunday with a rescheduled doubleheader against Concordia. The Clippers will be the home team while playing at Asbury Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Delaware Drops CAA Softball Doubleheader at Hofstra, 8-0 and 6-5
DATE: April 8, 2017
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.
-- The University of Delaware softball team’s seventh inning rally in the nightcap fell just short as the Blue Hens dropped a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader to Hofstra, 8-0 and 6-5, Saturday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.
Hofstra (14-15, 4-3 CAA) took the early lead in the opener, as after a pair of two-out walks in the bottom of the first inning, Megan Patierno belted a three-run homer. The Pride maintained its 3-0 cushion into the bottom of the fifth, when Hofstra scored five times to end the game due to the mercy rule.
Patierno smacked a two-run shot for her second home run of the contest, while one out later Brittany Allocca added a solo homer of her own to increase the margin to six. Later in the frame Kristin Hallam and Brielle Pietrafesa delivered RBI singles to put the game away for the Pride.
Hofstra pitcher Sarah Cornell fired a two-hit shutout to improve to 11-7 on the year, while Delaware starter Jordan Cargile dropped to 12-9 as she gave up eight runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings. Leanna Gearhart singled in the third and Mattie Nuccio doubled in the fifth to account for the Blue Hens’ two hits.
The Pride again struck first during the opening frame of the nightcap, as Nikki Michalowski drilled a two-run homer. After Hofstra added a run in the second on a sacrifice fly, Michalowski added her second two-run shot in the third to increase the Pride advantage to 5-0.
Delaware (16-16, 4-4 CAA) finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Mariah Kondravy led off with a double and pinch runner Jess Bishop eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Emily Neal. Alyshia Dellatore then opened the fifth with a single, and after she moved to third base, she scored on a passed ball to bring the Blue Hens within three.
Pietrafesa doubled home a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 6-2 game, but Delaware rallied in its final at bat. Gearhart led off with a walk, Giovanna Kolofer followed with a single, and one out later Anna Steinmetz drilled a three-run homer to left field. The longball was the 24th of Steinmetz’s career, setting the new UD home run record.
However Jessica Peslak then relieved Alyssa Irons in the circle for the Pride and struck out the next two Blue Hen batters to seal the win for Hofstra. Irons earned the win while Peslak picked up a save for the Pride, while UD pitcher Taylor Curran dropped to 3-2 after allowing six runs on eight hits in six innings.
Delaware and Hofstra conclude their weekend series with a 12 noon game on Sunday.
Game Notes:
• The Blue Hens had won eight of their last nine games prior to Saturday’s losses
• In the opener, Delaware was shut out for the first time since a 9-0 loss to fourth-ranked Florida on Feb. 12
• Steinmetz’s 24 homers are one more than Michelle Grap and Kondravy
• Her nine home runs are tied for fourth most in a UD single season
• Kondravy is now tied for sixth place in Blue Hen history with 36 career doubles

The Wildcats (18-12, 12-4 CACC) needed six runs in their final two at-bats to comeback and defeat the Chargers (10-15, 5-7 CACC) in the opener before exploding for 11 runs on 15 hits in the nightcap for the CACC sweep.

The Chargers led 4-3 after the seventh inning in the opener before the Wildcats’ bats came alive. NEWARK, Del.

The Hawks (14-20) scored a run in the top of the first during the opener, but Delaware (17-18) answered in the bottom half when Giovanna Kolofer singled, moved to third on a Mariah Kondravy (below) double, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Anna Steinmetz.
Alyshia Dellatore (left) drilled a home run to centerfield in the bottom of the second, while Leanna Gearhart led off the third with a single and eventually scored on an error to give Delaware a 3-1 lead. However a three-run double by Molly Kapala gave Saint Joseph’s the lead back in the top of the fourth, while the Hawks added three more in the fifth to take a 7-3 advantage.
Delaware responded in the bottom half, as Mattie Nuccio scored on an error and Steinmetz crushed a three-run homer to center to pull the Blue Hens even. The game remained tied until the eighth, when Kapala delivered an RBI single for the game-winning run.
Hawks pitcher Madison Clarke improved to 4-6 after allowing seven runs on 10 hits, while Delaware starter Jordan Cargile dropped to 13-10 as she gave up eight runs, just one earned, on 10 hits. Gearhart and Kondravy each had two hits for the Blue Hens, while Steinmetz drove home four.

The Hawks added three runs during the fourth, including two on a homer by Caela Abadie, and tacked on three more in the fifth.

SUBJECT: Shippensburg Jumps Out Early en Route to a 16-8 Victory over Wilmington Baseball

DATE: April 11, 2017
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Shippensburg jumped out to an early lead over the Wilmington University baseball team and never looked back, winning the nonconference contest, 16-8, on Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Raiders (13-16-1) scored multiple runs in each of the first five innings, including six runs in the top of the fifth to take a 15-1 lead. The Wildcats (18-13) scored two in the seventh and five in the eighth, but it was too little too late as the Raiders cruised to the finish line.

Shippensburg’s all-time home run leader Jake Kennedy belted his 14th of the season to open the scoring, a two-run shot to left in the top of the first. The Wildcats’ got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Regan Hidalgo blasted a double to the gap in left center, chasing Julian Kurych home to cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Raiders added to the lead with another two-run home run in the top of the third, and made it 9-1 in the top of the fourth with a three-run triple inside the first base bag. The visitors than stretched the lead out to 15-1 in the top of the fifth with six runs on hive hits, getting a pair of two-run doubles in the inning. A solo homer to left in the to of the seventh capped the scoring for the Raiders.

Joey Cautillo cut into the deficit with a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Rocky Ferrier and AJ Lerro with two outs in the frame. The Wildcats edged closer in the eighth, getting an RBI double from Logan Gilbert, RBI singles from Julian Kurych and Lerro, and scoring the final two runs on passed balls.

Kurych led the offense by going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Gilbert batted 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored while Hidalgo was the final Wildcat with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with the RBI double.

The Raiders’ Zack Sims improved to 3-2 with the win, throwing 6.0 innings with six strikeouts, giving up one run on five hits. Tyler Newton was saddled with the loss, pitching the first two innings while allowing four runs on four hits. Lance Gilbert and Kyle Menchaca each threw a scoreless inning for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats have a chance to wash this loss away with a quick turnaround as they head to Philadelphia for a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday. The teams will play a pair of seven-inning games with the first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: Crooked Innings Propel Wilmington Baseball to Sweep at Philadelphia, 15-8 and 11-4

DATE: April 12, 2017

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Big innings propelled the Wilmington University baseball team to a nonconference sweep of Philadelphia, 15-8 and 11-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Playing a pair of seven-inning games, the Wildcats (20-13) scored all 15 runs in the final five innings of the opener, including a six-run sixth inning and a four-run seventh inning. The nightcap was paced by a four-run fourth inning and a seven-run fifth inning to secure the sweep over the Rams (10-21).

The Rams jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first two innings in the opener before the Wildcats started their scoring spree in the top of the third. Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, Kendall Small smacked a three-run homer to take the lead for good.

Both teams scored a single run in the fifth inning before the Wildcats broke it open in the top of the sixth. Mike Annone started the scoring with an RBI single to score Jesse Long for the 6-4 lead. Julian Kurych followed suit with an RBI single before Nick Macey hit an RBI single with the bases loaded. Small walked to force in a run before Lance Gilbert was hit by a pitch to force in another run. Long reached on an error as another run came, capping the sixth inning and putting the Wildcats up 11-4.

Annone led off the top of the seventh with a double before Kurych brought him in with an RBI single. With the bases loaded, Lance Gilbert singled into left field to bring in another run before Long doubled to the gap in left center for the 15-6 lead. Despite giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, John Hetterman closed out the game for the victory.

Zach Rumford went five innings while striking out seven batters to earn the win, improving to 1-0 on the year. He allowed four runs on seven hits, but was backed by his offense on Wednesday. Annone and Kurych finished game one with three hits while Macey, Lance Gilbert and Long added two hits each. Small finished with four RBI.

Brad Scull was cruising through the Rams’ lineup to start game two getting through three innings before the Wildcats’ offense came alive.

All with two outs and the bases empty, Logan Gilbert extended the inning by reaching on an error. Small walked and Lance Gilbert made it hurt with an RBI double down the right field line. Lone extended the pain by hitting a three-run homer run to put the Wildcats up 4-0.

Scull then left two runners on in the bottom of the fourth, bringing the red-hot bats back to the plate. With the bases loaded, Dan Hyatt was hit by a pitch to force in a run before Small doubled down the right field line to plate two more. Lance Gilbert added his second double of the game, this time to the gap in left center to score two more. Rocky Ferrier capped the seven-run inning with a single through the right side, scoring both Gilbert and Long for the 11-0 lead.

Scull turned it over to the bullpen as Rudy Gervolino pitched the sixth and Zach Frederick pitched the seventh, eventually earning the sweep. Scull only gave up two hits while striking out four to improve to 2-3 on the year.

Small, Lance Gilbert, and Long led the offense in the nightcap with two hits and two runs each while Gilbert and Long collected three RBI each.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday with a makeup date at Post University. The first pitch against the Eagles is slated for 12:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Three-Run Seventh Inning Propels Delaware to 10-9 Baseball Victory Over Penn
DATE: April 12, 2017
NEWARK, Del
. -- The University of Delaware erupted for six runs in the first inning, but needed three more in the seventh to regain the lead and went on to defeat Penn 10-9 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Blue Hens (17-14) received three hits from outfielder Calvin Scott and right-hander Cole Benjamin pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory. Four Blue Hens had multiple hits and every starter reached base. The Quakers fell to 14-14 on the year.
“Today’s win was an example of winning ugly,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “That game is the type of game that you’re really mad if you lose, but we’ll take the victory. I thought [Matt] Hornich threw well in his couple of innings, and Burk FitzPatrick came in and threw well. Those two performances were the silver lining from an otherwise tough day for the staff. Offensively we came out strong, but got a bit complacent in the middle innings, before turning it on in the seventh. We won and now we have to get ready for an important conference weekend.“
Delaware got off to an early 6-0 lead after the first inning as the Hens sent 11 batters to the plate in the opening frame. In the third the Hens and Quakers each scored a run, as Delaware enjoyed a 7-1 lead after four innings of play.
LHP Matt Hornich pitched the first two innings and Ron Marinaccio worked the third. For the fourth, the Hens summoned Kyle Hinton to the mound.
Hinton worked a scoreless fourth inning, but found trouble in the fifth. The hard throwing righty allowed a two-out grand slam to Penn catcher Matt O’Neill that cut the Hens lead to 7-5.
Returning to the mound for the sixth, Hinton again ran into a bit of a jam, allowing three more runs (two earned) in the sixth. The three-run output gave Penn an 8-7 lead.
Benjamin retired the final batter of the sixth and fired a scoreless seventh, allowing the Hens to go to work in the bottom half.
In the bottom of the seventh, a pair of Quakers relievers walked the bases loaded with one out for Kevin Mohollen.
Mohollen ripped a ground ball that Penn first baseman Sean Phelan couldn’t handle, resulting in an error. On the play, Phelan tried to throw out Mohollen but committed his second error as his throw sailed over the head of his pitcher. The pair of errors allowed the Hens to score twice, giving Delaware a 9-8 lead.
Two pitches later, Delaware added the third run of the inning on a throwing error by O’Neill.
In the top of the eighth, Penn tried to mount a bit of a rally as the Quakers' first two batters led off with singles. With the tying runs on base, Hens reliever Burk FitzPatrick came through again in the clutch, striking out the next batter before ending the inning on a double play.
Penn added a run in the ninth on a home run and loaded the bases with two outs, but FitzPatrick ended the game, coaxing a lazy fly-out right to earn his first save of the season.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Hens and was the 13th win in the last 15 games for Delaware at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware returns to action this weekend when it welcomes Hofstra for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series. Friday’s game will start at 3, with the final two games beginning Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - La’Dae Boykin only needed 11 seconds overtime to complete the comeback victory over Philadelphia, 16-15, for the Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Action on Wednesday afternoon at Raven Hill Field.

The Wildcats (5-9, 3-4 CACC) scored the final four goals of regulation in the final 3:30 to force overtime. Boykin then secured the opening draw and marched right down the field to scored the game-winner just 11 seconds into the extra period. The Rams (4-7, 2-3 CACC) scored their final goal of the game with 5:04 remaining in regulation, taking a 15-11 lead.

Lashay Ross put home a free position shot with 3:30 to play starting the comeback bid. Gabby Spalt scored again with 3:00 showing on the clock before Ross converted another free position show with 2:05 to play to cut the deficit to 15-14.

The Rams controlled the ensuing draw but Megan Card stripped the ball loose with 1:44 to play. Shawna Chopko came through and scooped up the loose ball and Ross tied the game with 1:21 to play in regulation. Ross then gained the ensuring draw, but the Wildcats were unable to get a shot off as the clock wound down, sending the game into overtime.

That’s when Boykin did her thing.

She won the draw and raced right to goal, scoring with 2:49 left on the overtime clock for the game-winner.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead and grabbed a 4-2 lead with 14:22 to play in the first half. The Rams scored two of the final three goals of the half to head into the break down just 5-4.

The Rams then scored five consecutive goals to take a 10-6 lead before the Wildcats answered with four straight marks to cut the deficit to 12-11. Philadelphia then scored three straight to take a 15-11 lead before the Wildcats made their comeback.

Ross led the Wildcats with six goals while Boykin added four goals and an assist for five points. Card chipped in with four goals as well while Spalt finished off the scoring with a pair of goals, adding two assists.

Chopko led the team with six assists while Card and Ross controlled three draws each. Maddie Hurm made 10 saves in goal for the Wildcats.

The Rams earned more draws, 24-10, than the Wildcats, including 17-5 in the second half, but it was the 1-0 advantage in the overtime that mattered.

The Wildcats close out the regular season with a pair of home games, starting with Felician on Tuesday afternoon. The opening draw at the WU Athletics Complex is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Winning Streak Stopped at 10 Straight for Wilmington Softball with CACC Split against Goldey-Beacom

DATE: April 12, 2017
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The 10-game winning streak came to a halt for the Wilmington University softball team, as it split with Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday afternoon, winning game one, 12-0 (5 innings), before losing the nightcap, 2-1 (9 innings), in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at Asbury Field.

The team’s winning streak turned to double digits with a 12-0 win in game one as the Wildcats (23-13, 11-6 CACC) collected 12 hits including two doubles, a triple, and a home run. But they couldn’t come up with the timely hit in the nightcap and fell to the strong pitching of the Lightning’s (8-20, 7-7 CACC) Kylie Doyle.

The bats came out of the gates hot for the Wildcats, as they scored once in the first but then poured it on with three runs in the second, three more in the third, and finished with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Kaitlyn Slater led the charge in the opener, batting a perfect 3-for-3 with a two-run double in the third and a three-run homer to dead center field in the fourth. She had five RBI in the game while scoring three runs as well. Slater is now tied with classmate Colby Wyatt for the team lead with four homers on the year.

Rosa’Lynn Burton was in the thick of things again as well, batting 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. She scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first before tripling in Alyssa Velasquez in the bottom of the second. She knocked in Slater in the third with an RBI single before capping her day with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth.

That was more than enough for starter Caitlyn Whiteside as she tossed her ninth complete game shutout of the season, this one of the five-inning variety due to the mercy-rule. She struck out three while not allowing a walk and only giving up three hits. She improved to 13-5 on the year with the win.

The nightcap was a completely different game for the teams, as Doyle was locked in a pitching duel with the Wildcats’ Brooklyn Lachette. The Wildcats out-hit the Lightning in the nightcap as well, but couldn’t find the timely hit as they left six runners on base throughout the game.

Lachette went the first six innings and struck out five batters, but allowed an unearned run to come across in the top of the fourth. The Lightning’s Shelby Murphy led off the inning with a double and eventually came home to score on a squeeze play. The Wildcats played the squeeze perfectly, but the slide of Murphy knocked the ball out of the catcher’s glove at the plate, putting the visitors in front, 1-0.

The Wildcats answered right back in the bottom of the fourth, as Danielle Bradley singled up the middle to start the frame. Meghan Brown doubled to the fence in left center, easily chasing Bradley home with the tying run, 1-1.

The Wildcats left a runner at third in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. The action didn’t pick up until the ninth inning with the international tiebreaker. The Lightning were able to successful execute their squeeze play in the top half while the Wildcats weren’t able to get the job done in the bottom of the ninth.

Brown was the only Wildcat to pick up multiple hits in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Whiteside pitched the final three innings for the Wildcats and allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out four. But Whiteside was saddled with the loss, falling to 13-6 on the year.

The Wildcats will take Easter Weekend off form game play and return to action in six days with another CACC action on the road. The Wildcats will travel to Felician on Tuesday for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.

Goldey-Beacom Softball Gains Split at Wilmington (DE)

Goldey-Beacom needed extra time in game two for a 2-1, nine-inning triumph at Wilmington following a 12-0 loss in the opener during Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play in New Castle, DE.

In game two with the contest level at one after eight innings, the international tiebreaker was in place with junior Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) put at second for GBC. She took third on a wild pitch and then scored when senior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) laid down a perfect bunt single for a 2-1 contest.

Wilmington had its turn in the eighth with Danielle Bradley on second. She reached third on a sacrifice bunt from Colby Wyatt, but was caught off third base when freshman catcher Dianna Gatto (Jefferson, NJ) made a perfect throw to get her.

Tower City, PA junior Kylie Doyle (4-8) permitted one run and seven hits over nine innings with a strikeout for the Lightning. Sophomore Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) had two hits.

Meghan Brown rapped two hits and Caitlyn Whiteside (13-6) struck out four over three relief innings, but allowed an unearned run.

The Wildcats in game one scored in every inning they batted. Kaitlyn Slater had a two-run double to spark the third inning and then delivered the key blow in the fourth with a three-run homer.

Brandle rapped two hits and East Windsor, NJ sophomore Alyssa Giampolo (3-7) permitted seven runs and six hits over 2 1/3 innings for the Lightning.

Slater closed 3-for-3 with five RBI and was a triple short of the cycle. Whiteside struck out three over five scoreless frames, yielding three hits.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Friday for a non-league doubleheader at Bowie State, beginning at 2:30 pm.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJGabby Bram (Jackson, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) led the Rider University softball team with two hits, but the Broncs were swept by Fairfield, 9-1 and 5-0, Saturday afternoon. With the losses, the Broncs fall to 6-27 (1-7 MAAC), while the Stags improve to 17-21 (7-5 MAAC).

The Stags struck early in both games, scoring twice in the first and three more in the second of Game 1, before using a three-run sixth to abbreviate the game with a 9-1 victory. The Broncs lone run in Game 1 was scored in the fifth, when Bram led off with a double, Amanda Jordan (Somerset, NJ/Franklin Township) was hit by a pitch and Josettee Spencer (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) singled on a bunt to load the bases for Toni Nino (Adelanto, CA/Silverado), who walked to push across the run.

In Game 2, the Stags used a four-run first to gain all the run support they’d need. A Courtney Hankins RBI double, a two-run triple by Molly Roche and a run-scoring single from Gianna Kinhofer did the damage. Hankins doubled home another run in the second to account for the fifth and final run scored of the game.

QUOTES & NOTES

“We had a lot of mental mistakes and we didn’t make the adjustments. At practice, we work on our swings and we work on defense and we have to apply that to a game-ready mentality and put a stop to it in the first inning and not wait until the end to try to spark something.” – Rider Head Coach Jaclyn Timko

Emily Oltman (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) took the Game 1 loss in the circle, allowing five runs, two earned, on seven hits and a walk in 1.2 innings pitched.
Elyse Cuttic (Easton, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) was the losing pitcher in Game 2, surrendering five earned runs on seven hits and a walk in two-plus innings pitched.
• Sophomore catcher Kiera Swank (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) caught the only attempted base stealer of the game, Kinhofer, with a dart to second base in the third inning of Game 2.

BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
• In addition to Bram’s two hits, DeMello, Spencer and Shelby Miller (Roseville, CA/Whitney) added a hit apiece.
Delany DeMello (Roseville, CA/Roseville) hurled five scoreless innings of relief in Game 2, scattering two hits and two walks, while striking out five to lower her team-leading ERA to 3.44.

ON DECK

The Broncs return to action Wednesday, when they play host to Columbia in a non-conference doubleheader. The Code Cranberry twinbill starts at 3 p.m.

SUBJECT: Tom Freeland Squeezes Home Game-Winner as Wilmington Baseball Sweeps Bloomfield, 8-4 and 3-2, on Senior Day

DATE: April 29, 2017
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University secured the second seed in the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a sweep of Bloomfield, 8-4 and 3-2, on Senior Day on Saturday at Wilson Field.

Senior Day was capped by a junior however, as Tom Freeland executed a squeeze play in the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap for the walk-off victory for the CACC sweep.

The Wildcats (27-17, 17-5 CACC) need to wait until Bloomfield makes up a game with Chestnut Hill scheduled for Sunday before determining if they play the Bears or Dominican in the play-in game next Saturday.

The Wildcats got off to a quick start in the opener, scoring in each of the first four innings. Kendall Small got things started with a two-out single to right to play Dan Hyatt in the bottom of the first. With two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the second, Jesse Long reached on an error and the Wildcats took full advantage. Rocky Ferrier and stole second and Hyatt came up with a two-run single to right for the 3-0 lead.

Bloomfield’s (17-20, 11-9 CACC) first came in the top of the third and it also produced the Bears’ first run, as Anthony Lantigua homered the opposite way down the right field line.

But the Wildcats answered with another run in the third, as Julian Kurych started the frame with a leadoff triple. Regan Hidalgo ground out to second to plate Kurych for the 4-1 lead. Hyatt added another RBI single with two-outs in the fourth, giving the Wildcats a 5-1 lead after four full innings.

Sean Deely struck out eight batters through seven strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking three. He improved to 7-0 on the season with the win. Zach Rumford left a runner on in the eighth inning before Dan Hyatt closed out the contest, despite the Bears scoring two on a two-out triple.

Ferrier cleared the bases with a three-run double in the bottom of the eighth to give Hyatt and the Wildcats a cushion, however. Ferrier and Hyatt each collected three hits and three RBI in the opener while Small went 2-for-4.

Offense was harder to come by in the nightcap, as the teams traded single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Small knocked in Kurych in the second before a Hyatt RBI groundout gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. But the Bears tied it again in the top of the fourth, using a two-out error to score a run.

Senior Tyler Newton went the first 3.2 innings for the Wildcats, allowing two runs (one earned) n four hits. Classmate John Hetterman came in and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts before turning it over to senior Kyle Menchaca for the seventh.

Menchaca worked around a two-out walk and stolen base in the seventh, inducing a fly ball to center to send the top half.

Small doubled to the fence in right field with one out to spark the bottom of the seventh. Max Carney then looped one into the outfield, but Small needed to freeze at second and could only advance to third. Freeland stepped in and bunted a pitch up in the zone to the right side of the mound, far enough from the pitcher to allow Small to beat the toss home with the game-winning run.

The Wildcats wrap up the regular season this week at home, first with a single nonconference matchup with West Chester on Tuesday afternoon. The matchup against the Golden Rams is set for 3:00 p.m. at Wilson Field.

Mon, May 01, 2017
Dover, Del. (Apr. 28, 2017) --- Delaware State head men's basketball coach Keith Walker has announced that five recruits have signed the National Letter of Intent to attend the university and compete for the Hornets beginning in the 2017-18 season.

The list includes two junior college transfers and three including freshmen. The breakdown by position is: three forwards, two of whom are also listed as centers, one point guard and one shooting guard.

Joining the Hornets next season is power forward Amiri Waddell of Charlotte, N.C. Waddell averaged 15.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game as a senior at Concord First Assembly Academy last season.

Listed at 6-6, 235 pounds, Waddell tallied 1,298 points during his scholastic career. He was All-North Carolina Independent Secondary Schools Athletic Association First Team honoree and 2017 North Carolina Private School All-Star selection.

The Hornets have also inked former Brunswick Community College (N.C.) teammates Saleik Edwards and Daivon Gamble.

Edwards, a 6-3 shooting guard from Winterville, N.C., was Brunswick's second leading scorer at 13.9 points per game as a sophomore during the 2016-17 season. He also averaged 4.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game last season. Edwards scored a career-high 25 points on 9-for -12 shooting from the field, including 6-of--9 on three-point FGs, vs. Caldwell last season.

Edwards and Gamble will each have junior eligibility with the Hornets during the 2017-18 season.

Gamble, a 6-8 power forward/center from Charlotte, N.C., averaged 9.5 points and was Brunswick's second leading rebounder at 6.4 per game during the 2016-17 campaign. He had career-highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Clinton Junior College last season.

Former Richmond, Va., high school star Ameer Bennett has also signed to join the Hornets next season. A 6-8, 200-pound forward, Bennett averaged 12 points and nine rebounds per game and earned Virginia Prep All-Conference honors as a senior at St. Christopher's High School during the 2016-17 season.

A three-year starter, Bennett helped lead St. Christopher's to 20 or more wins in each season, a conference championship as a junior and state tournament final four appearance in sophomore year.

Bennett posted a 48 percent field goal percentage, including 40 percent on three-point shots, during his senior season.

Rounding out the list is Johquin “Pinky” Wiley, a former standout point guard at L.C. Bird High School in Chesterfield, Va,

The 2016-17, 5A South Region Player-of-the-Year, Conference 12 Player-of-the-Year and 5A State Co-Player of the Year, Wiley averaged 11 points and seven assists per game during his senior season. Also a 2016-17 Richmond Times-Dispatch All-Metro First Team player, the 5-11 Wiley helped lead L.C. Bird to the Virginia 5A state championship as a senior last season. He nailed to game-winning shot with four seconds left to send the team to the championship game.

Delaware State men's basketball returns one regular starter from its 2016-17 squad, which posted a 10-22 overall record and was eighth in the MEAC with a 7-9 regular season mark.

Delaware State 2017-18 Men's Basketball signees
Name Cl Ht Pos Hometown/Previous SchoolAmeer Bennett
FR 6-8 F Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's HS
Coach Walker's comments: “Ameer is a highly skilled combo forward. He can shoot with either hand and possesses a nice mid-range shot. He's a solid defender, what I would consider a rim protector. I'm looking forward to his development with the team.”

Saleik Edwards JR 6-3 G Winterville, N.C./Brunswick CC
Coach Walker's comments: Saleik can play both guard positions, although we envision him challenging to replace graduating senior and 1000-point scorer DeAndre Haywood. He's a complete guard who shoots well, can handle the ball and make plays on defense. His junior college experience is helpful as he steps up to the Division I level.”

Daivon Gamble JR 6-8 F/C Charlotte, N.C./Brunswick CC
Coach Walker's comments: “Davion is a high energy guy who is a capable scorer, but sets himself apart with his defense and rebounding abilities. He makes the hustle plays on offense and defense that teams need to be successful.”

Amiri Waddell FR 6-6 F Charlotte, N.C/Concord First Assembly Academy
Coach Walker's comments: “Amiri is capable of playing multiple positions for us. He's equally effective as an outside shooter and inside scorer, and could be a match-up nightmare for our opponents. Although he's capable of putting up big numbers, his unselfish play is perhaps his biggest asset.”

Johquin “Pinky” Wiley FR 5-11 PG Chesterfield, Va./Chesterfield HSCoach Walker's comments: Pinky is the consummate floor general point guard. Many considered him the best high school player in Virginia last season. He led his team to a state championship during his senior year. He's a double-figure scorer, but his best attribute is making his teammates better.”

In a battle that was much closer than the final score, Goldey-Beacom received a test from Southern New Hampshire in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and advanced with a 5-1 victory in Flushing, NY.

It was the program’s second NCAA Tournament triumph, following a first-round win over Chestnut Hill in 2015. The Lightning (14-3) move on to the second round to face 44th-ranked Queens on Tuesday at noon. That winner advances to the “Sweet 16” in Altamonte Springs, FL.

The women’s tennis squad is the owner of the only two head-to-head NCAA Tournament victories in school history in any sport.

The third-doubles team of freshmen Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) and Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) opened things by improving to 12-2 with an 8-1 triumph over Lindsay Baum and Rachel Wagner. The first-doubles unit of seniors Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) and Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) moved to 13-4 with an 8-3 victory over Sofia Morais and Kaitlyn Poje.

The No. 2 doubles match of GBC junior Raquel Morais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and freshman Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) vs. Abla Chadli and Anna Salla was an intense battle with momentum clearly hanging in the balance. Playing just their 10th match together, the Lightning’s duo took the rubber with a huge 8-6 win for a 3-0 margin in the tie.

Sengl provided the only easy part of the singles competition for Goldey-Beacom, moving to 17-0 on the year with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Poje. Her 48th career singles win is tied with Filipa Correia (2011-15) for second in team history.
