Sun, September 25, 2016
Columbia, Mo. (Sep. 24, 2016) --- Missouri racked up 506 yards and 58 points in the first half en route to a 79-0 victory over Delaware State at Memorial Stadium this afternoon. The two teams agreed to shorten the third and fourth quarters to 10 minutes.

Missouri sophomore quarterback Drew Lock completed 26-of-36 passes for 402 yards and five touchdowns in just the first half of play. Tiger wide receiver J’Mon Moore, also playing the first half only, had eight receptions for 114 yards and four touchdowns.

Mizzou (2-2) scored touchdowns on eight of its first nine first half possessions. The Tigers drove 94 yards on nine plays on the opening drive of the game, capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by Ish Witter.

Lock and Moore connected for their first touchdown of the game on a four-yard pass to cap a six-play, 99-yard drive on the Tigers’ second possession.

The duo also struck for two more first quarter touchdowns (six and nine yards) and another score in the second quarter.

Mizzou running back Damarea Crockett rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns (2, 11) on 12 carries.

The Tigers totaled 698 yards in the contest, 430 by the pass and 268 on the ground.

Delaware State (0-3) had 140 total yards, passing for 96 and running for 44 on 26 carries.

DSU crossed into Missouri territory on just one possession, reaching the Tigers’ 36 before throwing an interception with 54 seconds left in the first half.

The Hornets also hurt their cause by losing two fumbles and throwing two interceptions. Missouri did not commit a turnover.

DSU sophomore quarterback Kobie Lain came off the bench to complete seven-of-15 passes for 82 yards. Aris Scott (sr.) caught two passes for a team-high 32 yards, while freshman Mike Waters led the Hornets with 31 yards rushing on seven carries.

“We knew there was a possibility that something like this could happen, but I credit our kids for battling all the way through,” said Delaware State head coach Kenny Carter. “Missouri is an outstanding major college program with great athletes and coaches. They play at a fast pace that we are not likely to see again this year. We begin a new season with the start of MEAC play next week, and that’s always been our main focus this season.”

Carter said it made sense to shorten the second half due to the lopsided nature of the game.

“The NCAA provides an option to shorten a game and Mizzou approached us about it at halftime,” he said. “The coaches and A-Ds from both schools agreed to do it in the interest of player safety.”

DSU will return to action next Saturday (Oct. 1) at Morgan State in the Hornets’ 2016 MEAC opener. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.

The next DSU home game is Oct. 8 against MEAC rival Hampton. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

STINGERS
Delaware State freshman punter Fidel Romo-Martinez had a 63-yard punt that was downed on the Mizzou one-yard on his first attempt of the game … Hornet senior quarterback Gilbert Rivera saw his first action of the second, playing the entire abbreviated second half … Rivera completed two-of-four passes for seven yards and was sacked once … the crowd of 53,472 was the second largest the Hornets have played before … more than 106,000 were in attendance when Delaware State played at Michigan in 2009.

Mon, September 26, 2016
Dover, Del. (Sep. 26, 2016) --- Freshman Samantha Wanzer scored from close range in the 80th minute and goal keeper Michele Lammers recorded her eighth career shutout to lift Delaware State to a 1-0 victory over Mount St. Mary’s at Alumni Stadium this evening.

The goal was set up by a corner kick from Savannah Taylor (so.), who lofted a near perfect cross that Wanzer leaped to knock down with her head before booting a shot past Mount St. Mary’s goal keeper Sydni Surowiec with just under 11 minutes left to play (79:02).

The goal was the first of Wanzer’s career, while Taylor recorded her third career assist.

“I just mentioned to assistant coach (Taylor) Mims that we need Sam Wanzer to outleap everyone to give us a chance on the corner kick,” said Delaware State first-year head coach Kourtney Rhoades. “We couldn’t have asked for better execution on the play.”

Rhoades credited the entire squad for the defensive effort.

“I thought our energy level was great, particularly on defense,” she said. “Each line did its job, and Lammers came through when we needed her to make a play.”

Lammers had four saves in the contest to give her 61 for the season and lowered her goals against average to 3.12.

The Hornets had five shots in the game, four on goal.

Each of DSU’s wins this season has come by shutout.

The Hornets snapped a three-slide to improve to 3-7, while The Mount fell to 3-5-1 this season.

Delaware State is idle until Oct. 6 when LIU-Brooklyn visits Alumni Stadium for a 7 p.m. contest.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Overcoming a slow start in the first set, the Stevenson University women's volleyball team swept Arcadia University 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth action Tuesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium. The set scores were 25-23, 25-18, 25-18.

Stevenson (12-7, 4-0 MAC Commonwealth) was paced by junior Annika Schwartz, who totaled 15 kills and seven digs. She needs just eight kills for 1,000 in her career. Sophomore Moriah Savage notched nine kills and hit .438 on the evening, while senior Kristen Brooks added six kills and six digs. Junior Deanna Bradbury led Stevenson defensively with 16 digs, while senior Sara Bollinger handed out 19 assists and freshman Julie Nightwine 13. Nightwine also had a career-best five service aces.

Arcadia (5-10, 1-3 MAC Commonwealth) was led by Shannon Ryan and MaKenna Micklus who posted five kills apiece.

Stevenson found itself down 15-11 in the first set before scoring the next four points to tie the frame 15-15 on a Savage kill. The Mustangs took a 21-17 lead on back-to-back ball-handling errors by the Knights, but Arcadia ran off five straight points to take a 22-21 lead on a Kayla Resh service ace. Following a service error, back-to-back Schwartz kills gave Stevenson a 24-22 lead, and after a Mustang service error, a kill by junior Lauren Weaver closed out the set.

The Mustangs never trailed in the second set, opening up a 17-8 lead following an Arcadia attack error. Stevenson led 22-12 when the Knights made a late run to close within 24-18, but a kill by freshman Victoria Prokic closed out the match. Stevenson hit .186 in the second set while holding the guests to -.026 hitting, with eight kills and nine errors on 39 attempts.

In the third set, Stevenson trailed 4-3 when it reeled off six straight points to build a 9-4 lead following a Nightwine ace and an Arcadia ball-handling error. The Knights chipped away and got within two, 16-14, but four straight points capped by a Brooks kill put the hosts in front 20-14. A service ace by freshman Darian Hileman closed out the match.

Stevenson hit .202 as a team while limiting the Knights to .071 hitting, including .000 over the final two sets.

Stevenson returns to action Thursday night when it hosts Gallaudet University in a 7:00 non-conference match at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

UBJECT: Late Flurry Not Enough as Women’s Soccer’s Comeback Falls Short, 2-1, to Holy Family

DATE: September 28, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - A late game flurry wasn’t enough as the Wilmington University women’s soccer team fell to Holy Family, 2-1, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The action picked up late in the second half, but the Wildcats (4-4, 3-2 CACC) found themselves down 2-0 and couldn’t find the equalizer. The Tigers (5-3-1, 4-0-1 CACC) scored on their first shot of the game and continued to keep the Wildcats deep in their defensive zone until the final 20 minutes of the game.

The Tigers opened the scoring early in the first half on their first opportunity, turning a Wilmington miscue into a goal. The conference’s leading goal scorer was able to get in behind the Wildcats defense for a breakaway in the third minute. Rock tallied her eighth goal of the season to give the visitors the early lead.

A set piece goal gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead 14 minutes into the second half as Shannon Metzler headed home a long free kick from the right in front of the visitors’ bench by Casey Rodgers.

That is when the Wildcats’ offensive pressure picked up, as the Wildcats were able to cut the deficit in half in the 72nd minute. Gabrielle Perry carried the ball across midfield and found herself with three other teammates in a four-on-three situation. She sent an advancing ball to Teigha Ward on the left side and she buried her shot at the 71:51 mark.

Ward had an excellent chance to time the game in the 80th minute, getting her head on the end of a set piece at the back post, but just guided the ball wide. The Wildcats also earned back-to-back corners in the final minute of play, but couldn’t register a shot as the final buzzer sounded.

The Wildcats were out shot, 11-5, in the match while starting goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams recorded two saves. Carin Essex-Arline and Loran Wyrough each kept the game were it was by recording defensive saves on the goal line during the match.

Wilmington will look to break its three-game skip when it returns to action on Saturday at CACC foe Post. The opening whistle is slated for 12:00 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.

2016 Delaware Valley University Football

Game #5 at Lebanon Valley College Flying Dutchmen

Saturday, October 1 - 1 p.m.

Arnold Field (Annville, Pa.)

For Immediate Release (9-28-16)
Contact: Matt Levy (215) 489-2937

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University will look to return to the win column on Saturday, October 1 when the Aggies travel to Lebanon Valley College for a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) match-up. Kickoff at Arnold Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.

DelVal fell to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the MAC with last Saturday’s 21-17 loss to defending conference champion Albright College. The Lions scored the game-winning touchdown with just 6.3 seconds remaining to knock DelVal out of the top 25 in a pair of Division III polls (the Aggies were 13th in one ranking and 14th in another).

DelVal held a 356-230 advantage in total yards against Albright, but hurt itself with its first two turnovers of the season. The defense did notch five sacks on the afternoon and forced four fumbles, but did not recover any of the loose balls.

The Aggie offense is averaging 34 points and 412.8 yards through the first four games of the year. Sophomore quarterback Dashawn Darden (Norristown, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) leads the way as he has completed 56 of 91 passes for 827 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. He has also netted 145 yards and one trip to the end zone on the ground. Against Albright, Darden was 17-for-33 for 215 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed for a season-high 66 yards on 13 carries.

The DelVal running game is headed by the tailback tandem of 2015 all-conference honorees Devauntay Ellis (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and Robert Cleveland (Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro).

Ellis, a junior, has 171 yards and four scores on 43 carries. He had 49 yards on 15 carries last week, including a one-yard touchdown with less than five minutes left that gave the Aggies a 17-13 lead at the time. Cleveland had eight rushes for 23 yards against Albright to up the senior’s season totals to 38 carries for 162 yards. He has three touchdowns to his credit.

Eric Shorter (Trenton, NJ/Princeton) and Mike Jensen (Woodbridge, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) head the receiving corps. Shorter, a sophomore, has 13 catches for 182 yards and one touchdown with three grabs and 46 yards coming last week. He also averages 32.2 yards on five kickoff returns, including an 89-yard touchdown in the win over Misericordia University.

Of Jensen’s 12 receptions this year, four have gone for touchdowns. The senior had five catches for 106 yards and a score against Albright and it upped his season yardage total to 212.

Defensively, DelVal is allowing just 13.8 points and 253.5 yards per game. The unit has also recorded 14 sacks and six interceptions.

Junior safety Shawn Miller (Laurel, DE/Laurel) head the group with 25 tackles and is tied for the team lead in interceptions with three. He had 14 stops and tied a school record with three picks in the season-opening win at seventh-ranked Wesley College. Miller had five tackles against Albright.

Junior linebackers Nicholas DiGati (Townsend, DE/Middletown) and Nick Wright (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) had six stops apiece last week. DiGati is second on the squad with 21 tackles while Wright has 14 tackles and is tied with Miller for top honors in interceptions with three. He leads the way with four pass breakups.

Sophomore lineman Christian Snowden (Williamstown, NJ/Saint Joseph Hammonton) is coming off his best performance as an Aggie as he had four tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble against Albright. Snowden is one of four players tied for the team leads in sacks with two and he also has six tackles to his credit.

LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE

The Flying Dutchmen are 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference following last Saturday’s 21-17 setback at King’s College. The team’s lone win this season was a 38-20 triumph over Wilkes University on September 10.

In the loss to King’s, Lebanon Valley gave up the game-winning touchdown with just 54 seconds left. The Flying Dutchmen were able to net 236 yards on the ground and finished with 376 yards of total offense. However, they turned the ball over three times and King’s amassed 407 total yards.

For the year, Lebanon’s Valley offense is averaging 18.5 points and 333 yards per contest. Heading the unit is junior quarterback Tim Pirrone, who has completed 33 of 69 passes for 413 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 211 yards and four scores. Last week, Pirrone was 10-for-19 for 140 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions and he also found the end zone on the ground.

Pirrone’s favorite target has been sophomore wideout Travis Saylor. Saylor has 11 catches for 107 yards, including a three-reception, 43-yard effort against King’s.

Sophomore tailback Brendon Irving is off to a good start in 2016 as he has lugged the ball 72 times for 300 yards. He netted 115 yards on 25 carries at King’s.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Flying Dutchmen are permitting 23.8 points and 352 yards per game. They have forced six turnovers, including five on interceptions.

Junior cornerback Spencer Moser leads the way with 30 tackles, four pass breakups and one interception. He had eight stops, three breakups and his lone pick in the loss at King’s.

SUBJECT: Brian August Elected to 2016 University of Delaware Hall of Fame Class

DATE: September 30, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - An argument can be made that there are few athletes with a better State of Delaware pedigree than Wilmington University baseball coach Brian August as he has recently been invited to join the 20th induction class of the University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame later this fall.

SUBJECT: Allison Briley Sets Career Kills Mark but Chestnut Hill Rallies to Defeat Wilmington Volleyball in Five Sets

DATE: September 30, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team couldn’t close out Chestnut Hill, as the Griffins battled back to take the final two sets for the 3-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division contest on Friday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 19-25, 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, and 10-15.

The loss overshadows a record-breaking night by the Wildcats’ (6-8, 3-2 CACC) Allison Briley, as she became the program’s all-time leader in kills, breaking the record with her 17th kill of the night. She needed to get to 1,199 career kills to break 2015 graduate and former teammate Kaitlin DiGiacinto’s mark set last year. Briley finished with 19 kills on the night and now has 1,201 career terminations.

After dropping the first set on Friday night, the Wildcats used a 7-3 spurt to break a 12-12 tie in the second set. The Wildcats didn’t allow the Griffins (6-9, 4-3 CACC) to earn back-to-back points the rest of the way and Rebecca Rawlinson picked up a kill on set point to tie the match, 25-20.

The third set was determined with a 5-0 run by the Wildcats, turning a 15-13 lead into a 20-13 advantage. The Griffins closed the gap to 21-17, but a Briley kill, a Jenna Brown ace, and a Jill Braunsberg kill put the Wildcats ahead, 2-1, in the match with the 25-17 set three win.

Trailing 13-10 in the fourth set, the Wildcats went on a 7-2 run to take a 17-15 lead, but the Griffins stemmed the tide and regained an 18-17 lead with a 3-0 run of their own. An Eile Harris kills tied the set, but then the Griffins scored back-to-back points en route to a 5-1 run and never looked back. The Wildcats saved two set points, but the Griffins forced a fifth set, 25-22.

The fifth set started in back and forth action, with Harris bringing the Wildcats to within 6-5 early on. But the Griffins picked up back-to-back points with the Wildcats in the net, switching sides with an 8-5 lead. They continued with the next two points as well, getting a solo block for the 10-5 lead. Briley’s record-breaking kill brought the Wildcats to within 11-7, but then she rattled off back-to-back kills and Miranda Shaw produced a service ace to bring the Wildcats to within 12-10. But again, the Griffins stemmed the tied and took the final three points of the match, finishing off the Wildcats, 15-10.

Braunsberg finished a kill shy of an elusive triple-double, collecting nine kills, 18 assists, and a team high 28 digs. The freshman also finished with a match high four service aces. Briley finished with a double-double with 19 kills and 16 digs while Shaw added another double-double as well with 19 assists and 11 digs. Rawlinson chipped in with six kills but finished with three solo blocks and two block assists to go along with three aces. Addalyn Flores led the back row with 24 digs for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats out blocked the Griffins, 13 to 6, but Chestnut Hill was able to collect more digs, 123 to 105. The Griffins ended up out-hitting the Wildcats, .182 to .166, as well.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer’s Unbeaten Streak Ends with 1-0 Loss to Felician

A dreary day at Caravel Academy in Bear, DE got worse for Goldey-Beacom when it permitted a goal in the 13th minute in a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Felician.

A first half that saw the shots level at 5-5 also saw the game’s only marker. Jovan Poggi lifted a perfect corner kick from the right side to Bashkim Saiti, who headed it home for his first goal of the year. It was the Golden Falcons’ only shot on cage.

GBC controlled most of the second half to the tune of a 16-1 shots edge, but could not get one through. Goalkeeper Jasur Tursunboyev saved the day in the 90th minute when he saved a shot from Alvaro Martinez (Zaragoza, Spain) right on the goal line after fellow junior Declyn Brown (Glasgow, Scotland) had his initial shot blocked.

Tursunboyev closed with five saves and Saiti amassed two shots for Felician (2-6-2, 2-3-1 CACC).

The loss ended the Lightning’s six-game unbeaten string, their longest since winning six straight in 2002. GBC (6-2-1, 4-1-1) now sits in a first-place tie with Georgian Court (4-1-1) in the league at the halfway mark.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Wednesday to face West Chester for a 3:00 pm match.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Draws, 1-1, With Felician

Goldey-Beacom and Felician went to overtime for the fourth consecutive time in the series and the squads played to a 1-1 tie at Caravel Academy in Bear, DE.

Felician grabbed the 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when a failed clear resulted in Amanda Nowak getting the ball and rocketing home a 10-yard shot for her sixth goal of the season.

GBC in the 60th minute leveled the match, 1-1. Senior Jane Grimley (Franklinville, NJ) had the ball on the left and fed a cross to junior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA), who put it in from six yards for her third goal of the season.

The game went into overtime thanks to a spectacular save from Lightning senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX), who dove to her right to rob Danielle Stoll in the 90th minute. Aguirre made two more saves in the second overtime as the Lightning ran their unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1).

Aguirre closed with six saves and junior Amy Runciman (Luton, England) attempted five shots for the Lightning (7-2-1, 4-1-1 CACC), who now sit in third place by themselves in the league.

Nowak had five shots and Bjonda Ademi made three saves for the Golden Falcons (2-6-1, 1-4-1), who are unbeaten in their last 10 games vs. the Lightning (7-0-3).

The four overtime games in this run have produced three draws and one Felician win.

Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday visits Lincoln (PA) for a 4:00 pm match.

Goldey-Beacom Volleyball Handed 3-0 Loss by West Chester

Goldey-Beacom ran into a buzzsaw in West Chester and was dealt a 3-0 loss (7-25, 5-25, 13-25) in West Chester, PA.

The Golden Rams closed the match with a 36-18 kills advantage and an astonishing .456 hitting percentage. West Chester over the first two sets recorded a combined 22-8 kills edge with just three errors.

Sophomore Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) dished 17 assists one night after becoming the fifth player in school history to reach 1,000 career assists. Senior Grace McCarthy (Middletown, DE/Delaware Military Academy) had eight kills and freshman Lindsay Przywara (Williamstown, NJ) amassed seven digs for the Lightning (4-6).

Karleigh Lutz notched eight kills and Jillian Grammer recorded 31 assists for the Golden Rams (13-4).

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Tuesday at Millersville for a 7:00 pm match.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson University downed No. 13 Eastern University to open the Middle Atlantic Conference crossover in women's volleyball Saturday morning at Owings Mills Gymnasium by a 3-1 score, followed by a 3-1 win over DeSales University in the evening. The set scores against Eastern were 26-24, 18-25, 25-18, 27-25. The win over the Eagles is the first over a ranked opponent for the Mustangs since downing No. 8 Juniata in the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2013.

Sophomore Moriah Savage led Stevenson (15-7) with 15 kills on .480 hitting, while junior Annika Schwartz posted her sixth double-double of the season with 10 kills and a career-high 23 digs. She also finished with four service aces. Senior Kristen Brooks notched nine kills and 12 digs, while freshman Victoria Prokic posted eight kills and four blocks.

Junior Deanna Bradbury recorded 26 digs, while senior Sara Bollinger registered 23 assists, 10 digs and six service aces. Freshman Julie Nightwine added 20 assists.

Eastern (15-2) was paced by Alicia Weigel's 18 kills, while Stephanie Elechko added 14.

In the fourth set, Stevenson held a 19-9 lead following a Nightwine service ace before the Eagles started to chip away, pulling within 21-17 on a Stevenson attack error. Eastern pulled within 23-22 when a Savage kill put Stevenson up 24-22 and serving for match point.

A Weigel kill, followed by points from Sarah Roberts and Elechko, put the guests up 25-24 and serving to force a fifth set. Sophomore Chelsea Ireland capped a long rally with a kill to tie the set 25-25, then back-to-back kills by Brooks closed out the match.

In the first set, Stevenson fell behind 18-12 before a 5-1 run by the Mustangs capped by back-to-back Savage kills made it 19-17. Stevenson took its first lead of the set at 25-24 on an attack error, then an ace by Bollinger closed out the set.

Against DeSales (11-8), Stevenson dropped the first set 23-25 before rallying to win 25-11, 25-22, 25-13 to extend its win streak to six matches.

Savage finished with 15 kills against the Bulldogs, with Schwartz notching 12 and junior Lauren Weaver 11. Schwartz recorded her second double-double of the day with 10 digs. Bradbury led the way with 16 digs defensively, followed by Brooks' 11, while Bollinger notched 23 assists and Nightwine 20.

Stevenson led 20-13 in the first set and held a 23-17 lead when the Bulldogs ran off the final seven points of the set to take a 1-0 lead. DeSales took advantage of five straight Mustang attack errors. The hosts gathered themselves to jump out to an 8-0 lead in the second set and were never seriously threatened.

The third set was tied 20-20 when a service error followed by a Savage kill gave Stevenson a 22-20 lead. Schwartz recorded an ace to make it 23-20, with another Savage kill closing out the frame. Stevenson again charged out strong in the fourth, opening up a 15-5 lead.

Stevenson returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Widener University for a 7:00 MAC Commonwealth contest.

WATERBURY, Conn. - - The Wilmington University women’s soccer team rebounded and snapped a three-match losing streak with a clutch Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Post, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field.

The Wildcats (5-4, 4-2 CACC) got back in the win column with a pair of first half goals, widening the margin to two goals once again with an early goal in the second half. Post (3-5, 3-3 CACC) cut the deficit to a single goal just 2:23 into the second half, but the Wildcats held on for the conference win.

The visitors had four corners in the first half, but it wasn’t until the final one where they were able to find the back of the net. Rebecca Dolhansky sent the ball into the box and found the head of Carin Essex-Arline for the 1-0 lead at the 36:24 mark.

Less than three minutes later the Wildcats took a 2-0 advantage, this time Dolhansky being the beneficiary of a nice pass. Teigha Ward found Dolhansky and she was able to put the Wildcats up, 2-0, with her first goal of the year at the 39:06 mark.

The Wildcats had the first two shots of the second half, but it was the Eagles that got on the board to cut the deficit in half. A long ball over the top beat Wilmington net minder Kierrstyn Williams just 2:23 in the half.

But the Wildcats kept the pressure on the Eagles, offering up the next shot in the game and the first corner of the half. The set piece off the corner was working for the Wildcats on Saturday, as Essex-Arline flicked on a corner kick from Dolhansky to the back post, finding Laura van Steveninck for the insurance goal at the 55:33 mark.

The Eagles had an opportunity in the 63rd minute, but Williams saved the first shot before the rebound chance sailed high. The Wildcats’ Valerie Bragg nearly made it a three-goal advantage in the 70th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar and stayed out.

The Wildcats out shot the Eagles, 15-10, for the match while also earning more corners, 7-3. Williams recorded five saves for the Wildcats while the Eagles’ goalkeeper made five stops as well.

The Wildcats remain in CACC play with their next contest, as they host Georgian Court on Tuesday night. The game will be played at Caravel Academy in Bear, Del., with the opening whistle slated for 7:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: No. 7 James Madison Breaks Away to Spoil Delaware’s CAA Football Opener, Posts 43-20 Victory Over Blue Hens

DATE:  October 1, 2016

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Things were looking good for the University of Delaware football team early in the second quarter Saturday when Wes Hills finished off a 78-yard drive with a nifty 24-yard scoring run to knot the score with James Madison 7-7.

But things quickly went south for the Blue Hens after that as the No. 7 ranked Dukes reeled off 33 straight points and never looked back in ruining the Blue Hens’ Colonial Athletic Association opener with a 43-20 victory at Bridgeforth Stadium.

Delaware (2-2, 0-1 CAA) did manage to rush for 312 yards as part of a solid 437-yard performance, but there was no stopping the powerful James Madison attack as the Dukes (3-1, 2-0 CAA) piled up 607 total yards on the way to their second straight win.

“It was a bad day for Delaware football,” said Delaware head coach Dave Brock, whose team had defeated JMU three of the last four meetings, including a 30-23 overtime win at Bridgeforth Stadium in 2014. “We didn’t play well and you have to tip your hat to James Madison. We knew they were a pretty good team and they confirmed that today. The game got away from us after it was 7-7, which is very disappointing. It was a tough day and we got a bad result.”

Delaware will look to regroup next Saturday when the Hens host Maine for Parents and Family Weekend at Delaware Stadium. The game will be the Hens’ first at home since a season-opening 56-14 win over Delaware State back on Sept. 1.

The Blue Hens’ running attack was a bright spot as the running back trio of Wes Hills, Jalen Randolph, and Thomas Jefferson combined to pile up 241 of the team’s 312 yards on the ground and each scored a touchdowns. Jefferson posted a team-high 92 yards on 12 carries while Hills added 78 on eight carries and Randolph contributed 71 yards on five tries. Hills returned to action for the first time since injuring an elbow vs. Lafayette on Sept. 10.

Delaware quarterback Joe Walker, who also returned to action after missing the Wake Forest game with an injury, hit on 8 of 19 passes for 124 as the Hens reached a season-high in that category. Junior wide receiver Diante Cherry caught six passes for a career-high 92 yards.

James Madison, which entered the game with an offense that ranked No. 2 in the NCAA in rushing (328.0 yards per game), second in scoring offense (48.0), and fourth in total offense (512.3), was on the mark once again. The Dukes piled up 607 total yards - the most ever by JMU against Delaware and the seventh highest total ever against Delaware - including 398 yards on the ground.

“We didn’t tackle particularly well and for a unit on defense that I certainly have a lot of confidence in, we struggled,” said Brock. “It was disappointing and its my job to make sure it doesn’t happen. We will have to find a way to fix it going forward.”

Khalid Abdullah rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns, quarterback Bryan Schor ran for 103 yards and three scores and also threw for 209 yards and a touchdown, and Cardon Johnson added 93 yards on the ground.

After each team hit the uprights on a long field goal attempt in their first possessions, JMU drew first blood with a seven-yard run from Schor with three minutes left in the opening stanza. But the Hens came right back to knot the score at 7-7 as they drove 78 yards and Hills completed the drive with an impressive 24-yard run that saw him emerge from a pile of defenders and scamper the rest of the way untouched for the score on the first play of the stanza.

But the rest of the day held little success for the Blue Hens.

James Madison answered quickly with three straight scores over an eight-minute span to take a 26-7 lead at the break and then scored with 6:12 left in the third to increase the lead to 33-7. A 41-yard scoring run up the middle by Abdullah seven seconds into the final stanza increased the lead to 40-7 and sealed the deal.

Delaware refused to lay down and added two more scores, a 12-yard run by Randolph with 11:02 left to play and a 12-yard burst by Jefferson with 3:39 remaining.

“I don’t think this week will be any different than anything we usually do,” said Randolph about bouncing back from the loss. “We will watch the film, make the corrections, and put it behind us. We will get better from this. We can still be the team we want to be. We will learn from this.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware’s 26-7 deficit was its largest since a 42-0 halftime deficit vs. Pitt in the 2014 season opener
• Delaware became the first team to win the time of possession battle with JMU this year, holding a slim four-second lead
• Penn State transfer Troy Reeder led the UD defense with nine tackles while Charles Bell contributed eight
• The Blue Hens, who were idle last week after falling to Wake Forest 38-21 on Sept. 17, had won six straight games following bye weeks, including three under Dave Brock
• Delaware entered the game ranked No. 3 in the NCAA in turnover margin at +8, did not force a turnover for the first time this season
• Joe Walker interception in the third quarter was the first thrown by the Blue Hens this season and snapped a streak of 100 straight passes without an interception since the Towson game on Oct. 31, 2015

SUBJECT: Gomar Advances to Second Round but Wilmington Women’s Tennis Knocked from Singles Bracket at ITA East Regional Championships

DATE: October 1, 2016
djl

SYOSSETT, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis team will rely on its doubles team to make a deep run at the 2016 ITA East Regional Championships as the four remaining singles players were eliminated on day two of the event on Saturday.

Freshman Begona Gomar was the only Wildcat to advance in the bracket on Saturday, defeating the number-three qualifier from the Qualifying Bracket, 6-1 and 6-2. But the freshman ran into a familiar foe in NYIT’s Karoline Pondusova in the second round, and the Bears’ player got the best of Gomar for the second time this season, 6-2 and 7-5.

After advancing to the second round of the Qualifying Bracket on Friday, Milica Knezevic dropped her match on Saturday, 8-3, to Queens. Wilmington’s number one singles Anushka Sathe fell in the first round of the Championship Bracket, 6-3 and 6-2, while Laura Gil also lost in the first round on Saturday, 7-5, 0-6, and 10-5, to a Southern New Hampshire player.

Again, the Wildcats will rely on their doubles teams to make a deep run through the ITA’s when they return to the court on Sunday for Day Three.

SUBJECT: Eighth Ranked LIU Post Strikes Early in 4-0 Win over Wilmington Men’s Soccer

NEWARK, Del. - - Four first half goals were too much to overcome for the Wilmington University men’s soccer team as No. 8 LIU Post remained undefeated with a 4-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

A goal in the opening minute of play put the Wildcats (6-2) on their heels in the first half, and the Pioneers (9-0) took advantage. Ranked eighth in the latest NSCAA National Poll, the Pioneers converted four of their nine shots in the first half into goals to carry them to the shutout victory.

Looking to respond after having the Pioneers knock them out of the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament a season ago, the Wildcats aimed for the upset. But it was the Pioneers that struck in the opening minute of play to take the momentum.

A turnover in the midfield led to a LIU Post breakaway as Charlie Ledula scored just 45 seconds into the contest. The Pioneers made it a 2-0 lead in the 17th minute with a header by Joey Forgaard before adding to their lead on another goal by Ledula in the 23rd minute. Harry Pearse capped the Pioneer scoring after capitalizing on another Wilmington turnover in the midfield in the 37th minute.

The Wildcats put four shots on the board in the second half but were still out shot, 5-4, en route to being out shot, 14-7, in the game. The Wildcats did earn more corners, 4-1, in the match, but couldn’t capitalize on any of their opportunities.

A tough stretch of games continues this week for the Wildcats, as they host Bridgeport on Tuesday before hosting Georgian Court on Wednesday afternoon. Tuesday matchup at the WU Athletics Complex is set for a 3:30 p.m. opening whistle.

SUBJECT: Women’s Soccer Give Georgian Court First CACC Loss, 3-2, in Dramatic Fashion

DATE: October 4, 2016
djl

BEAR, Del. - - It took the entire 90 minutes but the Wilmington University women’s soccer team knocked off Georgian Court, 3-2, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference clash on Tuesday night at Bob Peoples Stadium at Caravel Academy.

Trying to hold on down the stretch, the Wildcats (6-4, 5-2 CACC) couldn’t get the ball out of their own 18-yard box in the waning seconds. The ball ended in the back of the net as time expired, but a foul was called on Georgian Court (7-3, 6-1 CACC) for running into the goalkeeper, ending any chance of a tied game.

The end of the game was a representation of the entire game, as both teams battled back and forth throughout.

The Lions struck first in the first half, taking a Wildcat turnover in the backfield and taking a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Amanda Astudillo noticed Wildcat goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams off her line and immediately took a shot from distance.

The Wildcats were able to tie the match in the 33rd minute, converting on one of their four corner kicks in the first half. After the corner was taken, the ball was headed in the box multiple times, but never cleared. The ball eventually found the back post and the head of Valerie Bragg who put it in the back of the net for her first collegiate career goal.

The Wildcats came out of the gate in the second half with a purpose and put the pressure on the Lions in the early going. The Wildcats’ first shot of the half put the home team in front, as Teigha Ward slipped through the back line of the defense. Gabrielle Perry played the ball over the top of the back line, giving Ward a chance in behind the defense. Ward cut the ball back to her left foot and shot from just inside the 18-yard box, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute.

Another scramble in the box completely swung the momentum into the Wildcats favor, as they extended the lead in the 79th minute. Another Rebecca Dolhansky corner resulted in the ball being on the foot of Loran Wyrough and she buried her shot for her sixth goal of the year.

The Lions were able to stay in the match late, scoring in the 88th minute to cut the deficit to 3-2. Although the Wildcats struggled to fully clear the ball in the final two minutes, they held on to give the Lions their first conference loss.

The Lions outshot the Wildcats, 10-8, but the Wildcats held the advantage in corners, 6-2. Williams recorded five saves on the night, including tipping one away while backtracking in the first half, for the win. Georgian Court’s Natalie Axelsson made three saves on the night.

The Wildcats return to action on Thursday afternoon when they host Bridgeport at the WU Athletics Complex. The opening whistle is slated for 3:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: Deron Joe’s Blast Gives Wilmington Men’s Soccer a 2-1 Victory over Bridgeport

DATE: October 4, 2016

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington men’s soccer team came out with a victory, 2-1, over the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Complex.

The game-winning goal came in the second half in the 81st minute off the foot of Deron Joe with an assist from Lorne Bickley. The Wildcats held composure in the last 10 minutes of the game to bring their record to 7-2 overall with the nonconference win.

During the first half, the Wildcats made the first move with a corner kick opportunity by senior Juan Bernal. Classmate Jamie Burridge made a run to the near post and was able to finish with a header to the far post. It was his fourth goal of the season.

But the lead didn’t last long, as Bridgeport (0-8) answered back within four minutes to bring the first half to a 1-1 tie. With a bouncing ball in the box, the Wildcats’ defensive clear was slammed right into the Purple Knight’s Jake Atkinson and into the back of the goal.

Wilmington had the bulk of the possession during the game, finishing with a crushing 16-3 advantage in shots over Bridgeport, including an 8-0 advantage in the second half. But it wasn’t until the eighth shot of the half that the Wildcats were able to find the back of the net. Bickley kept the ball alive in the box by keeping it away from the Purple Knight goalkeeper. Now on the endline, Bickley played a ball back into the field and found a charging Joe just into the box. Joe’s blast was his third of the season and proved to be the game-winner.

Vinny Tasca recorded one save in goal for the Wildcats. The home team also earned more corners, 8-1, than the Knights.

The next match for the Wildcats will be against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference leading Georgian Court University (4-1-1) tomorrow, Wednesday, at 3:30 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom’s Nina Sengl Named CACC Student-Athlete of the Month

Senior Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) has enjoyed one of the most outstanding careers in Goldey-Beacom history and today added to that in being named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Student-Athlete of the Month.

The award is given to only one student-athlete a month, no matter what gender, based on what he or she has done in athletics, academics and within the community.

On the tennis court, Sengl has helped elevate the Lightning to parts unseen in school history. One of the squad’s most prolific players, she is tied for fifth in school history with 37 doubles victories and seventh overall with 35 singles triumphs. Sengl’s 14 doubles victories in 2014-15 are tied for fourth in school history and her 14 singles wins from the prior season are tied for seventh.

Her historic 2014-15 campaign saw her end 14-5 in doubles and 8-3 in singles. It also was an historic season for the Lightning as they became the first team in school history in any sport to win a head-to-head contest in the NCAA Tournament. The squad went 18-5 for a school record in victories, tied the team mark with 10 shutouts and closed the season ranked 31st in the country according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

For September, Sengl went 3-0 in singles and doubles to help Goldey-Beacom open 3-0 in the CACC for the fourth time in five years.

The academic honors are just another part of Sengl’s game. She won the 2015-16 CACC Women’s Tennis Top XV Award for having the best GPA among those participating in the league championship. The Marketing Management major also is a three-time member of the league’s Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Sengl helped the team participate in Tennithon, assisting 65 junior players with various parts of their game in a five-hour tennis marathon to benefit the Delaware Tennis Foundation. She also helped with Adopt-a-Family, soliciting GBC gear from coaches and student-athletes that was given to a Wilmington family who lose their home in a fire. Sengl also assisted the athletics department last October with Bras for a Cause, which raised money and collected bras during breast cancer awareness month.

Sengl is the first for Goldey-Beacom so honored since Lillian Chukwueze from women’s basketball was presented in January 2015.

CHESTER, Pa. – Junior Annika Schwartz posted her third straight double-double and eighth of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs as the Stevenson University women's volleyball team swept Widener University 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth play Wednesday night at the Schwartz Center. The set scores were 25-16, 25-18, 26-24.

Stevenson (16-7, 5-0 MAC Commonwealth) extended its win streak to seven matches with the victory. Schwartz's 12 kills led a balanced attack that saw senior Kristen Brooks notch nine kills, junior Lauren Weaver and sophomore Moriah Savage each register eight, and freshman Victoria Prokic add six. Prokic and Weaver each had three block assists, with sophomore Chelsea Ireland leading with four block assists.

Junior Deanna Bradbury finished with 15 digs, while senior Sara Bollinger handed out 20 assists and freshman Julie Nightwine 19.

Widener (8-13, 2-2 MAC Commonwealth) was paced by Nicole Dorman's 10 kills.

In the first set, the Pride held a 15-14 lead following a Kierston Forney kill, but back-to-back kills by Brooks and Schwartz gave the Mustangs a 16-15 advantage. A Dorman kill tied the frame 16-16, but from there, Stevenson rattled off nine of the final 10 points, including the final six, and a Savage kill closed it out.

Stevenson clung to a 16-15 lead in the second set when a Bradbury kill, followed by back-to-back assisted blocks by Weaver and Ireland, gave the guests a four-point cushion. Coming out of a timeout, a Schwartz kill extended the lead to five, and the Mustangs maintained at least a four-point lead the rest of the way.

Widener, trying to extend the match, jumped out to a 14-10 lead in the third before the Mustangs pulled within one, 15-14, on a Brooks kill. The Pride rebuilt a 20-15 lead before a 6-1 Stevenson run capped by an attack error by the hosts tied the set 21-21. Widener scored the next two points to go up 23-21, but kills by Weaver and sophomore Lauren Jan and a Pride attack error put Stevenson back in front.

A Dorman kill knotted the set 24-24, the eighth tie of the set, before the Mustangs notched the final two points to take the victory.

Stevenson hit .297 for the match while limiting Widener to a .067 clip, including .014 over the final two frames (15 kills, 14 errors on 69 attempts).

Stevenson is idle until Tuesday, October 11, when it hosts Albright College in a 7:00 MAC Commonwealth contest at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

WILMINGTON, Del. - - Despite winning the first set, the Wilmington University volleyball team fell to crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom, 3-1, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday night at the Joseph West Jones Center.

Set scores for the match were 25-10, 20-25, 19-25, and 23-25.

The Wildcats (7-9, 4-3 CACC) came out of the gates on fire, hitting .619 in the first set with 14 kills and only one error on 21 attempts. But after the first set, the Lightning (5-7, 2-5 CACC) outhit the Wildcats, putting down 47 kills in the final three games to the Wildcats’ 27.

Everything was working for the Wildcats in the first set, as they jumped out to leads of 6-1 and 11-2. Freshman Emma Kongevold put down three straight kills and four kills in a 5-0 run to give the visitors a 16-4 lead. Jenna Brown served an ace before Eile Harris gave the Wildcats a 23-7 lead. The Lightning scored three straight to make it respectable before the Wildcats closed out the set, 25-10.

The Lightning carried the momentum into the third set, opening with a 5-2 lead. The Wildcats battled back to tie the set, 7-7, but the Lightning went on another 5-2 run to regain a 12-9 lead. It was tough for the Wildcats to gain back-to-back points the rest of the way, as the Lightning continued to hold leads at 16-12, and 20-15. The Lightning finished off the set with back-to-back kills, 25-19.

Looking to stay in the match, the Wildcats jumped out to early leads in the fourth, taking the first three points and held a 7-5 lead.
