SUBJECT: Dominate Second Half Brings Wilmington Men’s Soccer Back for 3-2 Victory at Philadelphia

DATE: October 19, 2016
djl

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - A dominating second half allowed the Wilmington University men’s soccer team to come back from an early deficit and defeat Philadelphia, 3-2, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Ravenhill Field.

The Wildcats (10-3-1, 6-2-1 CACC) overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit with three consecutive goals in the second half. Philadelphia (4-9-2, 3-6-1 CACC) cut into the lead with a goal with under five minutes to play, but the Wildcats held on for the CACC victory.

Although the Wildcats out shot the Rams, 6-5, in the first half, it was a dominating performance in the second half that led to the win. The Wildcats out shot the Rams, 15-6, in the second half to lead to a 21-11 overall tally.

The Wildcats came out with the first opportunity in the first half, but Daniel Loyo’s header in the 10th minute hit the post and remained in play. The Wildcats would collect six of the first eight shots of the match, but the Rams were the ones that found the back of the net first. A blast from just inside the penalty area found the netting on the far post in the 24th minute to put the home team ahead, 1-0.

It was all Wilmington after the break, however, as the Wildcats made Philadelphia goalkeeper Eric Gutierrez make four saves in the opening 14 minutes. But it was the seventh shot of the half that got the Wildcats going, as Deron Joe was at the right place for a rebound in the 59th minute. Juan Bernal’s initial shot was saved, but Joe was there to stuff it home for his fourth goal of the year.

The Wildcats continued to put the pressure on, getting off the next two shots and two corners, the last set piece paying dividends for the visitors. Fredrik Bentdal sent a left-footed corner across and found Loyo who slammed it home with the right foot for the 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute.

Bernal gave the Wildcats some breathing room in the 79th minute, launching a blast from 24 yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar and into the back of the net. It was Bernal’s fifth goal of the season, giving the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.

Philadelphia fought to get back into the contest, mustering another goal in the 86th minute off a set piece from just outside the penalty area. But the home team couldn’t register another shot in the final 4:33 of the match as Wilmington came away with the 3-2 victory.

Lorne Bickley collected an assist in the game while also leading the Wildcats with three shots on goal. Joe also collected three shots on goal in the game, putting four shots on the board overall. Jamie Burridge finished with three shots, two of which were on frame.

The Wildcats forced Gutierrez into making nine saves for the match while Vinny Tasca recorded five saves in the victory.

The Wildcats sit in second place in the CACC with three conference matches remaining in the regular season. They will host Nyack on Saturday for their final regular season home game of the season. The men will close the CACC doubleheader with an approximate start time of 2:30 at the WU Athletics Complex.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - An early second half goal carried Philadelphia to a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Wilmington University women’s soccer team on Tuesday afternoon at Ravenhill Field.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak inside the CACC for the Wildcats (8-6, 7-3 CACC) but keeps the team in third place in the conference with two CACC games to play. The win is the fifth in the last six CACC games for the Rams (7-6-1, 6-3-1 CACC) and puts them in a tie for fourth overall in the standings with two games to play.

Despite an early goalie change, the Wildcats fought through the first half to a scoreless tie. The Rams out shot the Wildcats, 6-5, while Melissa Gall needed to make the switch to goalkeeper in the sixth minute and make two stops during the first half.

Starting goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams came back on for the Wildcats to start the second half, but the Rams struck first with a goal in the 52nd minute. Williams came off her line to punch away a cross, but the ball landed right on the foot of Parisse Dawkins for her first goal of the season.

The Wildcats put the pressure on down the stretch, but Rebecca Dolhansky’s header in the 88th minute was saved by the Rams’ netminder Deanna Messner. Laura van Steveninck got on the end of a corner kick from Carin Essex-Arline, but her shot was blocked moments later. The Wildcats’ last chance came early in the 90th minute, but Kelly Robbins’ shot was also saved by the Rams’ goaltender.

The Rams out shot the Wildcats, 14-10, for the match while also earning more corners, 5-3. Williams recorded three saves in the second half while Messner finished the game with four stops.

The Wildcats close out their nonconference schedule on Thursday when they welcome Millersville to the WU Athletics Complex. The opening whistle is set for 3:30 p.m.

Elena Power’s Hat Trick Sends Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Back to CACC Tournament

Junior Elena Power (Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) recorded her first career hat trick and Goldey-Beacom punched its third straight ticket to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 4-3 win at Holy Family in Philadelphia, PA.

The Lightning grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute courtesy of an own goal before Power went to work. She got a cross on the right side from senior Lauren DeVault (Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) and scored in the 15th minute for a 2-0 margin.

Power was not done, completing her first career brace in the 25th minute. Sophomore Sophie Woods (Manchester, England) this time provided the helper as her shot was blocked and Power was there for the rebound and a 3-0 cushion.

To put this in perspective, it marks only the third time the Lightning have scored at least two goals against the Tigers in 19 all-time meetings.

Stefanie Ulmer scored in the 51st minute to bring the Tigers within 3-1, but Power’s career day continued to flourish four minutes later. She took a pass from sophomore Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) and found the back of the net for her fourth career goal.

The Tigers made things way too interesting with Brianna Rock scoring in the 77th minute and Taylor Walker following suit five minutes later for a 4-3 contest. But the home side, which closed with a 27-6 shots edge, could not get another shot on frame the remainder of the contest.

Senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) made seven saves and now has 244 career, moving into third place on the school’s career list.

Rock closed with eight shots for the Tigers (6-7-2, 5-3-2 CACC).

GBC (10-4-1, 6-3-1) reached double figures in wins for the fourth time in school history and the first time since 2005. It is tied for fourth place in the league with Philadelphia U.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday visits Post for a noon contest in Waterbury, CT. The men’s game follows at approximately 2:30 pm.

Elena Power’s Golden Goal Lifts Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer to Overtime Win at Post

It has been a dream week for junior Elena Power (Glassboro, NJ) and she continued that with two goals, including an overtime tally 3:22 into the second overtime to give Goldey-Beacom a big 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Post in Waterbury, CT.

Power was coming off a hat trick Tuesday at Holy Family and sustained her torrid run in today’s pivotal match. Her first tally came in the 57th minute when she went sent on a breakaway by senior Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ) and found the back of the net for the all-important 1-0 lead.

The Lightning’s defense looked to hold, but the Eagles got the equalizer in the 88th minute. A corner kick from Hope Wilson was loose in the box and after Fitore Kilobocishta got a toe on it, Katharina Mertz scored for her third tally of the season.

GBC had one shot in the overtimes and it was Power again, scoring her fifth consecutive goal for the squad. She took a long pass from senior Lauren DeVault (Williamstown, NJ) and tucked it inside the left post for her fifth goal of the season and sixth career.

The win was vital as it kept Goldey-Beacom (11-4-1, 7-3-1 CACC) in a tie for fourth place in the CACC with Philadelphia U. (7-3-1). The Lightning would need to equal or better the Rams’ result from next week and hope Holy Family does not beat Georgian Court if those results are a loss or draw.

GBC hosts Wilmington (DE) on Wednesday at 3:00 pm at a site to be determined. Please check GBCAthletics.com and Twitter.com/GBCLightning for updates. Philadelphia U. is home Tuesday against Chestnut Hill.

The victory also give GBC its greatest total since gaining a school record 14 triumphs in 2001 and 2002.

Senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) had nine saves for the Lightning with Wertz and Sam Rodriguez attempting four shots apiece for the Eagles (4-9-1, 4-6-1).

SUBJECT: Wilmington Women’s Soccer Closes 2016 Regular Season Home Slate with 5-1 Victory over Nyack

DATE: October 22, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s soccer team wrapped up its 2016 home slate with a 5-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Nyack on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Although the shots represent a closer game than the final outcome, the Wildcats (10-6, 8-3 CACC) were able to bury their opportunities in the match while Nyack (6-10, 6-6 CACC) couldn’t capitalize. The Wildcats outshot the Warriors, 11-8, for the match.

The scoring started early for the Wildcats, as they were able to convert on their first shot of the game. Rebecca Dolhanksy lofted a ball into the box from the right sideline. The ball carried over all her intended targets, including the Warrior goalkeeper and into the upper left hand corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.

Teigha Ward gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break with her ninth of the season in the 39th minute. Loran Wyrough played a ball into the left side of the box and Ward spun around a defender before putting her left foot on the ball for the goal.

Nyack cut the deficit in half to start the scoring in the second half, using a short corner in the 58th minute to find the back of the net. But the Wildcats were able to quickly respond; using back-to-back goals to extended the lead once more.

Dolhansky fed a ball to the left side and a hard charging Gabrielle Perry. Perry raced around her defender and into the box, beating the goalkeeper with a high shot in the 67th minute. Less than a minute later, Wyrough turned a Warrior turnover in the backfield into her ninth goal of the year, getting a through ball from Ashley Cafarella for the breakaway.

Stephanie Alvarez capped the scoring for the Wildcats in the 83rd minute, volleying home a cross from the left corner by Kelly Robbins for her second goal of the season.

Saturday was the final regular season home game for the Wildcats’ lone senior, Kim Richer. The defender has started in 63 of the 64 career games she’s played thus far, and has scored five goals while adding six assists for 16 career points.

The win keeps the Wildcats on pace with Caldwell in second place with the 8-3 CACC record, but Caldwell holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with one game to play. The Wildcats’ 2016 regular season comes to a close when they head across town to play Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday afternoon. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: Wilmington University Volleyball Breaks Six-Match Losing Streak with 3-0 Win Over Nyack

DATE: October 22, 2016
eth

NEWARK, Del. - - Wilmington volleyball finally found their winning ways with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Warriors of Nyack College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-17, 25-14, and 25-7.

The Wildcats’ (8-14, 5-8 CACC) win helped the squad breaking a 6-match, and 18-set losing streak, as a balanced offensive attack, coupled with strong play at the net, gave the hosts the three-set sweep.

Wilmington jumped out early in the first set, marching out to a quick 12-3 on a kill from Allison Briley. Nyack (7-16, 4-8 CACC), got as close 17-13 after a kill by Hadley Spresser, but the ‘Cats put down three of the set’s final four points to secure the win.

It was all Nyack to start the second set, as the visitors opened with a 4-0 lead. That lead would grow to as many as five (6-1) before Wilmington used runs of two different runs of four straight points to take a 14-10 lead. Back-to-back kills from Briley stretched the lead to 19-11, and shortly thereafter, three consecutive points ended the set in favor of the home team.

Wilmington jumped out early to start the third set, rolling to a quick 7-0 lead courtesy of strong serving from the arm of Briley. The Warriors never got closer than seven points (10-3) down the stretch, and the Wildcats cruised to the shutout victory.

It was Briley who led the ‘Cats, notching 10 kills and seven digs, while hitting .333 for the match. Freshman Jill Braunsberg added nine kills and 15 assists, while hitting .389, while junior Eile Harris chipped in with five kills on eight swings, and tied a team-high with three blocks. Sophomore Miranda Shaw dished out a match-high 16 assists and recorded 14 digs for the double-double effort. Libero Jenna Shaw rounded out the defense with 15 digs.

The Wildcats hit .316 for the match, while holding Nyack to a negative .009 hitting percentage. Wilmington was stronger at the net, recording eight total blocks, while the Warriors didn’t record a single block in the match. The ‘Cats picked up seven service aces, with three coming from Brown.

Wilmington hits the road for their next match, as they travel to take on CACC South leading Philadelphia University on Tuesday evening. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Men’s Soccer Can’t Find the Back of the Net in 1-0 Setback to Nyack on Senior Day

DATE: October 22, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - Missed opportunities harmed the Wilmington University men’s soccer team as it dropped a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference decision to Nyack on Senior Day on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (10-4-1, 6-3-1 CACC) outshot the Warriors (7-8, 6-5 CACC), 16-5, for the match, including an 11-2 advantage in the first half, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Of the two first half shots for the Warriors, the visitors were able to get on the scoreboard, proving to be the lone mark of the game.

Juan Bernal had a free shot at the goal in the 15th minute, but a sprawling Wiktor Lasota saved his shot from 19 yards out. Fredrik Bentdal put a shot on frame in the 32nd minute following a great play from Jamie Burridge, but his left footed shot to the far post was also saved.

The Warriors were able to capitalize one their one opportunity in the first half, using a long throw-in to get the ball into the penalty box. A clearing header by the Wilmington defense was blocked and the ball bounced right to Finn Reese who headed it home from in close for the 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute.

The Wildcats came right back and had another pair of chances, but Burridge’s shot form 12 yards out was blocked before Juan Bernal’s rebound shot went wide.

It was more of the same for the Wildcats in the second half, as Sam Jester had back-to-back chances in the 83rd minute. Lasota saved jester’s initial shot in the box with the rebound trickling wide of the goal frame.

Daniel Loyo had the final chance to tie the match for the Wildcats in the 89th minute, getting his head on the end of a long ball from the defensive line. But his header from 10 yards out went right into Lasota to secure the shutout victory.

Jester, Bernal, and Loyo all finished with three shots in the match with Jester putting two on frame. Wilmington netminder Kenny Caballero made one save while Lasota made seven stops for the win.

The Wildcats slip to fourth place in the CACC standings with two conference matches remaining. They first head down the road to the Kirkwood Soccer Club to take on crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday afternoon. Opening whistle is set for 3:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: Fall Season Closes for Wilmington Women’s Tennis with 5-0 Defeat to Post in CACC Tournament Semifinals

DATE: October 22, 2016
djl

MEDIA, Pa. - - An unprecedented fall season came to a close for the Wilmington University women’s tennis team on Saturday, falling to Post, 5-0, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinals at the Springton Tennis Club.

The Wildcats (7-4) earned the number two seed for the tournament after a 6-1 conference record. The team beat Post in the regular season, 5-4, dropping the Eagles to the number three seed in the tournament.

Head coach Brad Rose’s thought prior to the match was that it would come down to the three doubles matches, in which he thought the Wildcats needed to come out on top in two of the matches in order to carry momentum into the singles.

But the Wildcats couldn’t get things going in the early part of the match, dropping all three doubles matches to the Tournament. Number three doubles finished first, with Lauren Kiger and Sabrina Blasi-Smith falling, 8-4. Number one doubles were the next to complete their match, with Laura Gil and Begona Gomar dropping a 8-5 decision. Number two double partners Anushka Sathe and Milica Knezevic were on serve but trailing 5-4 at one point in the match, but the Eagles took the final three games to win, 8-4.

In tournament play, once a team reaches five points, the match is considered complete. Kiger dropped her match at number six singles, 6-0 and 6-1, and Blasi-Smith fell, 6-2 and 6-1, for the final two points of the match.

But the Wildcats were leading in three singles matches when the match was decided, as Gil took the first set, 6-0, at number three singles. She was also leading the second set 4-1. Knezevic also won the first set, 6-4, at number five singles while also leading the second set, 1-0, when the match was called. Gomar took the first set, 6-3, at number two singles, giving the Wildcats three leads when the match was complete.

The Eagles advance to face the CACC Regular Season Champions and CACC Tournament number one seeded Goldey-Beacom on Sunday in the Final. Goldey-Beacom defeated USciences, 5-0, in the first semifinal on Saturday.

CHAMPIONS: Goldey-Beacom Women’s Tennis Wins its First CACC Title, 5-1 Over Post

When freshman Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) let out a scream for all to hear, Goldey-Beacom had won the match point it took 12 years to get.

Goldey-Beacom cruised through a trio of singles matches after two doubles wins and captured its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title with a 5-1 victory over Post in Philadelphia, PA.

In its fifth trip to the CACC final, the Lightning slammed the door on the automatic bid to their sixth NCAA Tournament. The East Regional will be held on two consecutive days to be determined, ranging from April 29-May 2, 2017.

It is the ninth CACC title overall for the athletics department and first since the women’s basketball team captured the 2011 crown.

The victory also gives the Lightning a 9-0 record for the best start in program history after beginning 8-0 in 2010-11. Their 7-0 mark in league play also was a team record and marked the first time the squad had been the top seed in the CACC Tournament.

GBC opened with a 2-1 lead through doubles. Garcia Valle and freshman Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) rolled to an 8-0 triumph at third doubles vs. Sarah Namazi and Jessica Bergen before seniors Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) and Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) gutted out a 9-8 (7-4) win at No. 1 doubles over Liza Dubrovskaya and Brianna Miah.

Hortelano Pey and Garcia Valle now are 8-0 as a doubles team.

Sengl was the first to close her singles rubber and did so at number five with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Namazi. Hortelano Pey followed shortly thereafter with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at sixth singles vs. Bergen, moving to 9-0 at singles.

With one more point needed, it became clear Garcia Valle had the best chance. Receiving serve at 30-40, she put away a winner at fourth singles for a 6-2, 6-2 clincher over Miah and one of the program’s signature moments since its 2005 debut. Garcia Valle now is 8-0 at singles.

Sengl was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, going 4-0 win a pair of wins at singles and doubles, and losing just one game in singles. She is 9-0 at doubles with Beg and is fourth in school history with 42 triumphs. Sengl also is 9-0 in singles and her 40 such wins put her tied with Anastasia Melnikova (2011-15) for fourth in team annals.

Garcia Valle, Silvia Hortelano Pey and Anna Hortelano Pey join Sengl on the all-tournament team.

Post ends the fall 9-8.

Junior Declyn Brown (Glasgow, Scotland) had three shots and Suhail Bismilla (Johannesburg, South Africa) made four saves for the Lightning, who closed with a 13-9 shots edge.

SUBJECT: Volleyball Battles But Falls to Philadelphia’s Late Game Runs in 3-1 Loss

DATE: October 25, 2016
djl

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team jumped out in front early but couldn’t hold on late as Philadelphia won the final three sets to win the match, 3-1, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division action on Tuesday night in the Gallagher Center.

Set scores for the match were 26-24, 19-25, 20-25, and 23-25.

The Wildcats (8-15, 5-9 CACC) were in every set with the momentum shift not coming until around the 20-point mark. The first place Rams (19-4, 11-1 CACC) closed out the second set on a 5-0 run, the third set on a 3-1 run, and the fourth set on a 6-0 run to earn the comeback victory.

With the Wildcats leading 22-18 in the first set, the Rams battled back to tie the match at 22-22. Deja Stanek regained the lead for the Wildcats with a kill before the Wildcats had set point on a Ram error. But the Rams again battled back, scoring back-to-back points to tie the set at 24. A Ram service error gave the Wildcats the ball and set point before the visitors took the opening game, 26-24, on another Ram attack error.

The Wildcats led the second set, 15-14, before the Rams made their move. The home team went on a 4-0 run to take an 18-15 lead before Allison Briley closed the gap to 18-17 with a kill. Another kill by Briley brought the Wildcats to within 20-19, but the Rams then went on a 5-0 run to even the match, 1-1.

With the Wildcats leading, 14-10, in the third set, the Rams used a 9-1 run to gain a 19-15 lead. Briley and Jill Braunsberg put down back-to-back kills to close to within 21-19, but the Rams retaliated with back-to-back points of their own to gain a 23-19 lead. The Wildcats could only get back to within 23-20 before the Rams closed out the set.

A 4-0 run early in the fourth set gave the Wildcats a 12-7 lead, capped by a Miranda Shaw service ace. With the Wildcats still leading 18-14, the Rams turned in three straight points to get to within 18-17. Harris put down a kill before Rebecca Rawlinson and Briley combined for a block and a 20-17 lead. Briley then followed up a kill with an ace to give the Wildcats a 23-19 lead. But the Rams fought back and earned three straight kills before a Wilmington timeout. A Wildcat ball handling error tied the set, 23-23, before a Ram kill and a Wildcat error ended the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.

Briley ended with 11 kills and a team high 24 digs, collecting 14 points on the night. Braunsberg put down six kills while adding 12 assists and 14 digs for the double-double. Stanek collected five kills while Harris ended with eight kills and a .350 attack percentage. Shaw dished out 16 assists while adding nine digs while Jenna Brown chipped in with 19 digs. Brianna Cunha finished with 19 digs on the back row as well.

The Wildcats remain on the road for their next CACC contest on Friday night. They head to Holy Family for a South Division contest with the first serve slated for 7:00 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Dealt Heartbreaking 3-2 Loss by Holy Family in CACC Quarterfinals

In a back-and-forth contest with multiple momentum changes, Goldey-Beacom was handed a crushing 3-2 loss by Holy Family in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament in Hockessin, DE.

The Lightning (12-6-1) close an outstanding season in which they hosted a conference tournament game for the first time since 2005, also the last time they were a number three seed prior to this year. The season also saw junior Amy Runciman (Luton, England) named second team all-conference and Dan Frick tabbed BSN Sports Coach of the Year.

Holy Family, which never trailed, struck first in the 11th minute. Ashley Shackleford had the ball on the right side and fed a great pass in front to Stefanie Ulmer, who put home a six-yard touch for her seventh goal of the year.

GBC responded just 80 seconds after halftime. Sophomore Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) has been a valuable player all year and once again proved it, getting the ball six yards out and putting it in for her fourth goal of the season and 10th career.

The Tigers got a corner kick in the 61st minute and cashed in. Alyssa Christiansen put a perfect ball in the box that Shannon Metzler headed in for her fifth goal of the year and a 2-1 Holy Family lead.

The Lightning for the second time got the equalizer, this time less than two minutes later. Runciman got a ball that was put in the box by senior Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ) and banged it home to make the contest a brand new one.

With overtime and even penalty kicks looming, Holy Family in the 83rd minute grabbed its third lead of the match. Brianna Rock got a long pass from Taylor Adair, put one touch on it and then scored on the second for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.

After the teams combined for nine shots in the first half, Holy Family held a 9-8 edge in the wild second half. Metzler had four shots and Kacie Booth made two saves for the sixth-seeded Tigers (9-7-2).

Senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) made four saves in her final game and ends her career third in school history with 264. She also holds the team record with 15 shutouts.

SUBJECT: Late Goal for No. 5 Wilmington Upsets No. 4 Philadelphia, 2-1, in CACC Tournament First Round

DATE: October 31, 2016
djl

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - A goal in the 86th minute decided a closely contested Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference First Round matchup with the No. 5 Wilmington University women’s soccer team defeating No. 4 Philadelphia, 2-1, on Monday afternoon at Ravenhill Field.

The Wildcats (11-7) outshot the Rams (9-8-1), 14-8, for the match, but the Rams earned more corners, 8-4, in the tight, defensive battle.

The visitors struck first late into the opening half, getting in on the left side. Teigha Ward made a run down the left side for the Wildcats, putting a cross into the box with her left foot. She found the head of Loran Wyrough who redirected the ball over the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead in the 38th minute.

The Rams battled right back, however, using one of their six corners in the first half to tie the match. Alexa Karakitsios played a short corner before receiving the ball back from Dena Noiseux. Karakitsios played a ball to the back post, bending it home over the goalkeeper in the 41st minute.

The Wildcats controlled the pace of play for the majority of the second half, but the Rams collected the best chance in the 79th minute .Noiseux found herself through the defense and alone in on the Wilmington goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams. Noiseux’s shot to the near post was saved and the ensuing corner kick was cleared from danger.

Wilmington used a long throw-in from Valerie Bragg to break the 1-1 tie in the 86th minute. Bragg’s flip throw landed in the middle of the box but a diving Deanna Messner saved Melissa Gall’s initial shot. Wyrough pounced on the rebound, but her shot went off the right post and into the middle of the goalmouth. Ward was there for the tap-in goal at the 85:38 mark.

The Rams didn’t record a shot in the final moments, allowing the Wildcats to move on to the CACC Tournament Semifinals on Friday.

Messner recorded seven saves for the Rams while Williams made four stops for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats advance to play CACC Regular Season Champion, host, and No. 1 seed Georgian Court on Friday in the semifinals. They will play the first semifinal at 11:00 a.m. in Lakewood, N.J.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team took the first set of the match on Wednesday night but Chestnut Hill came back to win the final three, taking the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division match, 3-1, inside Sorgenti Arena.

Set scores for the Wildcats were 25-20, 22-25, 16-25, and 28-30.

The Wildcats (9-16, 6-10 CACC) hit a team best .176 in the first set, but finished the match by committing 27 of their 33 errors in the final three sets. The team ended with a .107 attack percentage for the match.

Trailing 14-11 in the first set, the Wildcats used a Chestnut Hill (11-13, 9-6 CACC) service error to spark a 7-0 run and take an 18-14 lead. The run continued and after a combined 12-3 spurt, the Wildcats led 23-17. Allison Briley gave the visitor set point with a kill before a Griffin attack error put the Wildcats in front, 1-0.

A back and forth second set had the Griffins up by as many as 18-14 before the Wildcats scored three straight to get within 18-17. An Eile Harris solo block eventually tied the game at 20-20, but the Griffins scored back-to-back points on a pair of Wildcat errors before scoring two more to take a 24-21 lead. A block error gave the Griffins the set, 25-22.

The Wildcats were once again down early in the fourth set to the Griffins, but used a 10-4 run, including the final four points to take a 19-17 lead. The teams traded points until a Briley kill gave the Wildcats set point, 24-22, and a chance to stay in the match. But the Griffins earned back-to-back kills to tie the game, 24-24. A Rebecca Rawlinson kill gave the Wildcats set point again, but back-to-back errors put the Griffins in front. The teams traded points until 28-28, and the Griffins picked up a block on Briley before an error ended the match, 30-28.

Briley started off slow with only three kills in the first set, but ended with a team high 16 on the night. SUBJECT: Early Counter Leads to 2-0 Loss for Wilmington Women’s Soccer to Top Seeded Lions in Semifinals

DATE: November 4, 2016
djl

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - An early goal forced the Wilmington University women’s soccer team to play from behind in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinals and top seed and host Georgian Court dropped the Wildcats, 2-1, on Friday afternoon.

The loss ends the Wildcats season with an 11-7 overall record while the Lions (14-4-1) advance to the CACC Tournament Championship match against the winner of the Caldwell/Holy Family matchup playing later Friday.

With the ball off the opening whistle, the Wildcats produced a corner kick just 44 seconds into the contest. The ball was cleared out of the penalty box and the Lions took off the other way. It ended with Kaitlin Lister streaking down the right side, getting in on Wilmington goalkeeper Kierstyn Williams. Lister’s shot beat Williams low and to her left side, finding the back of the net just 1:08 into the game.

Teigha Ward had an excellent opportunity in the 16th minute, putting a shot on frame but Lion netminder Natalie Axelsson tipped the ball over the cage for a corner.

The Wildcats’ best opportunity in the second half came early on, as Laura van Steveninck put a shot on frame just 40 seconds in but Axelsson again guided the ball over the crossbar. The ensuing corner was cleared from danger.

The Wildcats didn’t record another shot until the 78th minute, but in the meantime the Lions added an insurance goal in the 76th minute.

The Lions edged the Wildcats, 10-9, in shots but the Wildcats held the advantaged, 5-4, in corners, including the only two in the second half.

Axelsson made four stops for the Lions while Williams recorded two saves in the game for the Wildcats.

The 11 wins for the Wildcats are the most by the team since the 2012 season when they finished 13-7-2 overall and won the CACC Tournament Championship.
