The Opponents

» Lafayette Leopards (0-0, 0-0 Patriot League)

Coming off a 5-11-1 finish last season, Lafayette has 19 letterwinners returning in 2015, including seven starters. LU’s top returner is forwardKaelin King, who led the team in goals (3), assists (3), points (9) and shots (20) in 2014. In the net, Danielle Sedillo returns for her sophomore campaign as the team’s top keeper. Last season, she totaled 64 saves, four shutouts and allowed 26 goals on her way to a 4-8-1 record.

» The Series: The Hornets are 0-4 all-time against the Leopards. The two squads last met in 2010 with the Hornets falling at home, 1-0.

» Temple Owls (0-0, 0-0 AAC)

Posting an 11-8-1 overall mark, including a 3-5-1 finish in conference play, Temple’s win total last season tied a program single-season record. Leading offensive charge for the Owls is midfielder Kelly Farrell, who totaled a team-high nine goals and 20 points. Shauni Kerkhoff, meanwhile, returns after starting every game last season, finishing with 79 saves, 23 goals allowed and six shutouts.

» The Series: Delaware State is 0-4 all-time against Temple. Last season, the Columbia Blue & Red at home to the Owls, 1-0.

A Win Would Mean…

» DSU’s first-ever win in a season-opener.

» The Hornets would extend their program-best winning streak to four – dating back to last season.

»Delaware State would snap four-game losing skid to both teams.

Scroope Approaching Milestone

With seven career wins as DSU’s head coach, Kerri Scroope needs four victories to pass Matt Okoh (2005-07) to become the program’s all-time leader. In 2014, Scroope’s second season at the helm, she led the Hornets to their second best finish in team history (6-12-1), in addition to being named Independent Conference Coach of the Year by College Sports Madness.

2014 in Review

Coming off its second best finish in team history, in addition to winning the first-ever Independent Conference Tournament Championship, the Delaware State women’s soccer will aim for repeat success under third-year head coach Kerri Scroope. In 2014, Scroope not only received Independent Conference Coach of the Year honors, but nine Hornets earned All-Conference selections. The Hornets also closed the year on a program-best three-game winning streak.

Coming Up Next…

DSU will return home to face Quinnipiac next Friday evening (7 p.m.). The Hornets are 0-2 all-time against the Bobcats, as the last meeting between the program’s resulted in a 1-0 road victory in favor of Quinnipiac.

Last Time Out…

The Hornets suffered a 2-0 loss at home last Friday to Quinnipiac. During the 73rd minute, the scoreless tie was broken with forward Nadya Gill (2) scoring via a header shot at close range, after an attempt by midfielder Jess Gargan hit the crossbar. As a result, defender Jess Cascio sent a sharp free kick from the right wing to the front of the net, as forward Jessica Jankowski (1) scored after controlling it. At game’s end, Quinnipiac finished with 14 shot attempts – including 10 in the final 45 minutes. DSU, on the other hand, registered two attempts each half. The Hornets had a chance to take an early 1-0 lead in the first stanza, when midfielder Danielle Valente was awarded a penalty kick opportunity after drawing a foul inside of QU’s goalie box. Nevertheless, goalkeeper Natalia Grodzki (2-0) denied Valente for one of her two saves on the night, whereas Michele Lammers (0-3) collected three stops in the net for the Hornets.

At This Point Last Season…

The Hornets were 0-3, coming off a 2-1 double overtime loss at home to UMass Lowell.

Coming Up Next…

The Columbia Blue & Red will conclude their brief two-game road swing this Wednesday night (7 p.m.) against Rider. Last season, DSU fell at home to the Broncs, 2-1.

The Forwards

Topping the list of returnees are senior veterans Taylor Addison and Julia Bossert. Addison returns as DSU’s top scorer, tallying two goals and one assist for five points on her way to receiving Second Team All-Independent Conference honors. Bossert – a Second Team All-Independent Conference selection also – led the Hornets in assists (3) last season, which tied a team single-season mark. Providing depth behind the senior duo will be sophomore McKenzie Miller, who will look to build on a All-Independent Conference Tournament Team selection. Newcomers in freshmen Taylor Love, Bri Musco and junior transfer Ayanna Smith, meanwhile, will also battle for playing time. Spending her freshman season at Southern Connecticut State, followed by sitting out her sophomore campaign, Smith took four shots and scored once.

The Midfielders

With nine players designated as midfielders, this position group is the deepest for the Hornets this season, led by senior Danielle Valente. In 2014, Valente was a First Team All-Independent Conference selection, appearing in 16 games while making 15 starts. Behind Valente are letterwinners from a season ago in juniors Dina Isham and Morgan Pottinger, whereas returners Kym Brewton and Tori Hamilton will battle for significant playing time. The newcomers, on the other hand, feature freshmen Dasia Busch, Logan Taylor, Kayleigh Leschinski and junior transfer from Stony Brook in Elise Pratt. Appearing in a combined 24 matches in two seasons, Pratt’s lone goal occurred as a freshman in Stony Brook’s double-overtime victory against Maine to complete the regular season.

The Defenders

The veteran trio of seniors Morgan Durham, Tere' Crawford and junior Taylor Pratcher headlines the backline for DSU in 2015. Durham, who started all 19 games last season on her way to earning First Team All-Independent Conference honors, likes the feel of the team with the regular season set to begin this Friday evening (7 p.m.) at home against Lafayette.

Goalkeepers

Aiming to fill void the left by Katelyn Koslosky (graduated), DSU’s all-time leader in saves (387) and shutouts (9), will be sophomore Michele Lammers and freshman Leslie Fazio. Lammers appeared in three games for a little over a combined 16 minutes as a freshman. Fazio – a product of nearby Sussex Technical High School located in Lewes, Del. - started all four years on the varsity level, garnering First Team All-Henlopen North Conference honors, along with First and Second All-State recognition during her final two seasons.

Dover, Del. (Sep. 4, 2015) —- The Delaware State volleyball team will take on North Carolina A&T at 4 p.m. today in the opening match of the 2015 UMES Courtyard Classic in Princess Anne, Md.

The Hornets (0-4) are seeking their first win of the season after dropping four contests at the Towson (Md.) Invitational last weekend.

North Carolina A&T (0-1) is coming off a loss to Campbell in its season opener last week.

Delaware State will battle host UMES (4-0) on Saturday at noon; and wrap up the tournament against Quinnipiac (1-2) on Sat. at 4 p.m.

The weekend tournament will also mark a homecoming for Delaware State interim head coach Whitney Johnson, who was a star player for the Hawks from 2007 to ’09. A three-time All-MEAC First Team selection, Johnson was voted the league’s Player-of-the-Year in 2007.

After falling to Tennessee 3-0 in its opening match at the Towson Invitational, Delaware State put up a good fight in its next two contests, coming up short 3-1 to St. Francis (Pa.) and 3-2 against Manhattan.

Senior Jasmine Jackson is off to a good start for the Hornets, collecting a team-high 41 kills (2.73 pg) to earn All-Tournament honors at the Towson Invite. Jackson also recorded 41 digs to rank second on the team, and contributed eight blocks (third-best on the squad) during the tourney.

Freshman setter Marisol Arredondo had an impressive collegiate debut last weekend. Arredondo recorded 90 assists (6.0 pg), 25 digs and three aces at the Towson Tournament. She had a career-high 36 assists in the five-set loss to Manhattan.

Alliyan McBean (so.) leads the Hornets with 49 digs (3.27 pg), while Janessa Helu (jr.) has a team-high 12 blocks (two solo) through four matches.

As a team, the Hornets have a .062 attack percentage, recording 124 kills and 97 errors in 438 attempts this season. DSU opponents are hitting at a .256 clip so far this season.

The UMES Classic is part of a 15-match road swing to begin the season for DSU. The Hornets will not play their first home match until Oct. 9 against Coppin State.

Fri, September 04, 2015
(Lowell, Mass.) – Despite allowing a season-high 27 shots – including 13 placed on-goal – the Delaware State women’s soccer team (1-3) pulled out a tough 2-1 road victory Friday night over the UMass Lowell River Hawks (0-3) for its first win of 2015, behind goals from freshmen Samantha Bahr and Taylor Love, in addition to a stellar night in the net by sophomore Michele Lammers finishing with a career-high 12 saves.

“We did a really good job as a team of preparing for this game”, said head coach Kerri Scroope, who now needs three more wins to become DSU’s all-time leader. “We made adjustments to our lineup to give our offense a boast and it worked with tonight’s tough win.”

With this victory, the Hornets avenged a gut-wrenching 2-1 double overtime home loss to the River Hawks last year, in addition to avoiding a fourth consecutive 0-4 start. UMass Lowell, meanwhile, remained winless to conclude its season-opening three-game homestand.

Trailing 1-0 in the first half, the Hornets knotted the match during 30th minute with forward Ayanna Smith hooking up with Bahr (1) via a crossing pass. The eventual game-winning goal, which turned out to be DSU’s first lead of the season, occurred during the 52nd minute with defender Morgan Durham sending a free kick deep into River Hawk territory, resulting in Love eventually controlling the ball and scoring.

As the second stanza progressed, so did UMass Lowell’s aggressiveness on the offensive end – tallying 16 shot attempts in the final 45 minutes. Nevertheless, Lammers’ tremendous second half efforts featured eight saves - including multiple game-saving stops at close range. The River Hawks actually managed to tie the game with a little less than four minutes to play with midfielder Carolyn Ragon firing a shot just out of the reach of Lammers. Luckily for the Hornets, Ragon was ruled offsides by the officials, nullifying the game-tying score.

For Lammers, this is the second time she’s totaled double digit saves in 2015, surpassing a previous career-high mark of 11 occurring in DSU’s 5-0 loss at Temple.

“She came up huge tonight. She was definitely the MVP for tonight’s game,” added Scroope. “She’s worked hard to get to this point, considering she had some really big shoes to fill in regards to replacing [Katelyn] Koslosky.”

When the final buzzer sounded, the Hornets finished with seven shots, while the River Hawks had six corner kicks to DSU’s zero. However, the foul count was in DSU’s favor, as UMass Lowell committed 21 infractions, compared to 13 for the Hornets.

“They overcame a lot of adversity tonight and we showed a lot of mental and physical toughness,” said Scroope. “This team has been through a lot over the years and this win really did a lot for our confidence.”

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will conclude their brief two-game road swing next Wednesday against Rider (7 p.m.).

HORNETS HOLD OFF AGGIES FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON AT UMES TOURNEY

Fri, September 04, 2015
Princess Anne, Md. (Sep. 4, 2015) --- Delaware State won the first two sets, then dropped the next two before holding off North Carolina A&T for a thrilling 3-2 win at the UMES Courtyard Classic this afternoon. The victory was the first of the season for the Hornets (1-4) and for interim head coach Whitney Johnson, who was a star at UMES before her coaching career.

DSU won the first set 25-23, and opened up a 2-0 lead with a 25-14 victory in the second set. The Aggies (0-2) staved off elimination by winning set three 25-19, and won 25-20 in the fourth set to tie the match.

The Hornets won the deciding fifth set 18-16.

Delaware State’s Jasmine Jackson (sr.) posted her third double-double in five matches this season with a team-high 17 kills and 11 digs.

Jae Jackson (jr.) had 10 kills and five blocks, including a season-high three unassisted; while NaKia Jones (so.) contributed 10 kills to the win.

Setter Taylor Marshall (jr.) had a solid floor game for the Hornets, dishing out a career-high 44 assists. She also had a service ace and four digs.

DSU’s Alliyah McBean (so.) led all players with 18 digs.

The Hornets never trailed in the first set, but had to survive a late NCA&T rally. DSU led 12-7 after an ace by Marshall and a kill by Jasmine Jackson on consecutive points. The Aggies trailed 21-18, but scored five of the next seven points to tie the set at 23-23. The Hornets scored the last two points, including the set winner on a Jasmine Jackson block.

The Hornets scored eight consecutive points to open up a 12-4 lead in the second set. DSU pulled ahead 19-10 lead on a kill by Jones off a feed from Marshall; and scored the last five points to win the set. It was the Hornets’ largest margin of victory in a set this season.

The third set was tied at 15-15 before NCA&T took control. Delaware State scored the first point of the fourth set and never led again as the Aggies evened the match.

In the deciding fifth set, DSU was two points away from victory after opening up a 13-9 lead. The Aggies rallied to score six of the next seven points and pulled ahead 15-14, and within a point of a stunning comeback win. The Hornets stayed alive on a NCA&T attack error on the next point.

DSU opened up a 16-15 lead on a kill by Jae Jackson, but the Aggies scored the next point to again tie the set.

NCA&T committed attack errors on the next two plays to hand the victory to the Hornets.

The Aggies committed 34 attack errors in the match, compared to 27 for Delaware State. The Hornets also had a better hitting percentage in the contest .196-to-.094.

DSU collected 57 digs and 14 blocks, while the Aggies had 54 and 10.

The win also tied Delaware State’s total for all of last season (1-24), and snapped a 15-match losing streak dating back to the 2014 campaign.

The Hornets will take on host UMES on Saturday at 12 p.m., and wrap up the tournament against Quinnipiac tomorrow at 4 p.m.

HORNETS OPEN SEASON WITH UMES LID-LIFTER INVITATIONAL
Courtesy DSU Athletic Media Relations
Fri, September 04, 2015
(Dover, Del.) – Delaware State’s cross country program opens its 2015 season with the UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational.

The event will start at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday at the Lexus Driving Range/UMES Cross Country Pavilion on the Maryland Eastern Shore campus.

Along with DSU and UMES, Morgan State and Norfolk State will also be at the invitational.

Delaware State is hoping to start the season strong after a lackluster 2014 campaign: best finish was third the women (who did it twice). The previous season ended last November when the Hornets hosted the MEAC Championship, as the men finished 11th (253 points) and the women finished sixth (202 points).

In the hopes of a better season, Delaware State announced the appointment of a new head coach on August 25th: Damion Drummond – who actually graduated from UMES in 2006.

Drummond had amazing success as the head track & field/cross country coach at Lincoln, PA. During his tenure, Drummond led the Lions to their first conference title, took them to the 2014 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship and earned CIAA Coach of the Year honors.

On the women’s side, the Hornets have big shoes to fill as they try to replace Ketsia Dornevil (graduated), who was their best finisher in the conference last season. The team will look to now-senior Nicole Gazzola who was right behind Dornevil in 2014. In the MEAC Championship, Dornevil finished seventh with a time of 19:26.40, while Gazzola finished 32nd with a time of 20:53.80.

On the men’s side, Irving Baker and Presten DeMarreau will look to be the leaders of the team. DeMarreau finished 29th with a time of 29:44.50 in the MEAC Championship, whereas Baker finished 45th with a time of 31:13.90.

This weekend is the first of three events the Hornets will compete in during the month of September. Next week, the Columbia Blue & Red will host the first of four meets this season, beginning next Saturday with the Hornet Invitational (9 a.m.).

HORNETS FALL TO NATIONALLY-RANKED LIBERTY IN SEASON OPENER

Sun, September 06, 2015
Lynchburg, Va. (Sep. 5, 2015) --- Delaware State opened a new football era with a frustrating 32-13 loss to nationally-ranked Liberty before an enthusiastic crowd 18,803 in the season opener for both teams at Williams Stadium this evening. The contest against the FCS No. 15 Flames marked the debut of new Hornet head coach Kenny Carter, who saw hopeful signs in the loss.

“I am so proud of the way our guys competed throughout the game,” Carter said. “For the most part, I thought we got a solid effort by our defense and the offense made some big plays, but our kicking game was disappointing, giving Liberty good starting position on too many possessions.”

Desmond Rice rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns and Darrin Peterson had eight catches for 83 yards and two scores to lead Liberty’s 417-yard attack. Quarterback Josh Woodrum completed 19-of-32 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns for the Flames.

Delaware State quarterback Esayah Obado connected on 16-of-27 passes for 227 yards but was intercepted twice in his first game since 2013. Obado was sacked five times in the contest, including one that resulted in a safety.

“Esayah played quite well, especially considering the pressure he was under from a veteran Liberty defense,” said Carter. “He made some great throws downfield and was able to make plays in pressure situations.”

Liberty took advantage of good field position after a short DSU punt to open the scoring. Five plays after an 18-yard punt by Jeremiah McGeough gave Liberty the ball at its 46 yard, Josh Woodrum connected with Darrin Peterson on a 26-yard touchdown pass for the game’s first score. John Lunsford’s extra point kick gave the Flames a 7-0 lead with 7:17 left in the opening quarter.

A Delaware State turnover led to Liberty’s second touchdown. The Hornets’ second possession ended when Wesley Scott intercepted Esayah Obado pass at the DSU 32 yard line. Three plays later, Rice scored a 23 yard run around the right end to give the Flames a two-touchdown lead. The extra point kick by Lunsford stretched Liberty’s lead to 14-0 with 4:53 remaining in the first quarter.

The Hornets got on the board and back into the game with a well-executed eight-play, 75-yard drive midway through the second quarter. The three-minute-27-second march was highlighted by a long pass play and a gutsy fourth down call by Carter to keep the possession alive.

The Hornets were facing a fourth-and-one at the DSU 34 when Obado connected with Malik Golson on an 11-yard pass to the 45. On the next play, Obado found Aris Scott downfield for a 47-yard pass to the Liberty 8. On third-and-goal from the two, Obado rushed up the middle for a touchdown to complete the drive. The Hornets attempted a two-point play after the score, but Obado was stopped short of the endzone on a rush attempt to keep Liberty’s lead at 14-6.

The DSU defense forced Liberty into a three-and-out on the next possession, but the Hornets couldn’t take advantage. Obado was sacked on the first play of the Hornets’ next possession and the Flames forced a punt from the DSU six yard line.

Starting from its 38 on the next possession, Liberty drove 27 yards on seven plays to the DSU 35. Lunsford capped off the drive with a 52-yard field goal to give the Flames a 17-6 lead with 2:56 left in the second quarter.

On the ensuing Hornet possession, Obado was sacked by Liberty linebacker Nick Newman in the endzone for a safety to give the Flames a 19-6 with 1:56 to go before halftime.

After Liberty regained the ball on a free kick, the Flames drove 46 yards to the DSU nine, but Kevin Jocelyn intercepted a tipped pass by Woodrum to keep the Hornets in the game.

Woodrum and Peterson connected for their second touchdown of the game on a six-yard pass to cap off a seven-play 51-yard drive, giving Liberty a 25-6 lead with 8:15 remaining in the third quarter.

The Hornets answered on the ensuing possession, marching 76 yards on seven plays for their second touchdown of the game. Jamaal Jackson capped off the two-minute-35 second drive with a two-yard touchdown run. Obado connected on each of his three passes for 49 yards, including a 27-yard strike to Malik Golson and a 15-yard connection with Kamal Abrams, during the drive. The extra point kick by Wisdom Nzidee cut Liberty’s lead to 25-13 with 5:32 left in the third quarter.

Rice scored his second touchdown of the game on a six-yard run to begin the fourth quarter to give the Flames a 32-13 lead.

Later in the quarter, the Hornets drove to the Liberty 23. On second down from the 23, Obado appeared to rush for a touchdown, but the play was called back due to a holding penalty at the two yard line. The drive ended when Chris Turner intercepted an Obado pass at the Liberty one yard line.

The Hornets collected 227 total yards, but only 42 on 25 rushing attempts. DSU lost 27 rushing yards on the five Liberty sacks.

Golson had seven receptions for 74 yards, each a DSU high. Abrams hauled in three passes for 51 yards in his Hornet debut. A former Dover High School star, Abrams played three seasons at Connecticut before transferring to Delaware State. Jackson had three catches for 44 yards and a team-high 31 yards rushing on 15 carries.

DSU linebacker Malik Harris led all players with 12 tackles, including six solo stops. Jocelyn had 11 tackles (five unassisted) to go along with the interception.

Defensive end Gabe Sherrod recorded seven tackles, including 3.5 behind the line of scrimmage, a sack and a blocked field goal attempt.

The Hornets return to action next Saturday (Sep. 12) at FBS Kent State. Game time is 3 p.m. in Kent, OH. DSU will play its home opener on Sep. 19 against Chowan. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Sun, September 06, 2015
(Princess Anne, Md.) – Saturday afternoon, the Delaware State cross country program kicked off the 2015 season with the UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational, as the men finished fifth (138 points) out of five teams, while the women finished fourth (106 points) out of six teams.

The best finish of any Hornet runner came on the women’s side with Nicole Gazzola finishing 15th with a time of 22:20.78.

Erin Cooper of Delaware State was right behind her at 16th with a time of 22:25.56.

Gazzola and Cooper were the only two women Hornets to finish inside the top-20.

The overall best time in the women’s race came from Morgan State’s Karen Escobedo, who finished in 18:59.49.

Although Escobedo had the best time, it was Maryland Eastern Shore who finish ahead of everyone, followed by Morgan State, Norfolk State, Delaware State, Coppin State and District of Columbia.

For the men, Emanuel Hitch had the best time for the Hornets with 19:07.44, and that was good enough to finish 22nd.

Wed, September 09, 2015
Phila., Pa. (Sep. 9, 2015) --- The Delaware State volleyball team got off to a slow start, but was much more competitive in the last two sets of a 3-0 loss to La Salle at Tom Gola Arena this evening.

The Explorers cruised to a 25-8 win in the first set. The Hornets battled to a 25-17 loss to set two, and made their hosts work overtime in a 27-25 setback in the final set.

La Salle’s Bryanna Davis led all players with nine kills, while teammate Laura Kulmeier had eight.

Nevershi Ellis (so.) had a team-high eight kills for the Hornets. DSU’s Alliyah McBean (so.) recorded a match-high 15 digs.

In the first set, La Salle scored the first eight points and never looked back.

The Hornets scored seven of the last nine points, but it was too late to overcome a 13-point deficit in the second set.

In the third set, Delaware State trailed 15-10 before battling back. The Hornets scored 11 of the next 16 points, and pulled ahead 21-20 on a kill by Marisol Arredondo off a feed from McBean.

DSU trailed 24-23 before winning the next two points to pull to within one of taking the set. La Salle answered by scoring the next three points to close out the set and match.

The Hornets were outhit .145-to-(-.011) in the contest. DSU had 20 kills and 21 errors on 91 attacks.
La Salle did a great deal of damage on the serve, collecting 13 aces to zero for the Hornets.

Delaware State recorded eight blocks, including four by Janessa Helu (jr.) to top all players.

DSU fell to 2-6 this season, while La Salle improved to 4-4.

The Hornets will return to action on Saturday (Sep. 12) against Penn in a tournament hosted by the Quakers. The match starts at 10:30 a.m. in Philadelphia. DSU will face Fairfield at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Penn Tournament.

Wed, September 09, 2015
(Lawrence, N.J.) – In the first of three games in five days, the Delaware State women’s soccer team (1-4) were no match for the Rider Broncs (2-3) on the road Wednesday night, as the Hornets allowed three first half goals on their way to suffering a 3-0 shutout loss.

With this defeat, the Hornets were denied their first 2-3 start since 2006, whereas the Broncs snapped a three-game slide in Wednesday night’s home opener.

Scoring all of its goals in an eight-minute span, Rider’s first strike occurred during the 26th minute with forward Alanna McDougall (1) finding the net, as forward Caroline Healy picked up the assist. The second goal featured midfielder Shannon Kelly placing the ball deep into DSU territory during the 32nd minute, resulting in defender Meghan McGabe (1) connecting for the score. Rider’s first half flurry concluded about two minutes later with Healy (1) scoring with a header attempt, as forward/midfielder Kourtney Cunningham was credited with an assist.

At game’s end, Rider was the aggressor throughout, totaling 13 shots, led by Healy’s four attempts. DSU, meanwhile, tallied just four attempts – with three resulting in Bethany-May Howard stops. Her counterpart sophomore Michele Lammers, on the other hand, collected a game-high five stops.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will begin a season-long four-game homestand this Friday night (7 p.m.) against the Wagner Seahawks.

DELAWARE STATE PLAYS HOST FOR THE HORNET INVITATIONAL
Courtesy DSU Athletic Media Relations
Fri, September 11, 2015
(Dover, Del.) – Delaware State’s cross country program will host its first home meet of the 2015 season this Saturday with the Hornet Invitational (10 a.m.) at the Delaware State Outreach and Research Center in Smyrna, Del.

Along with the Hornets, Coppin State and Howard will both be competing in Saturday’s festivities.

The Hornets will look to improve on last week’s season opener at the UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational, where the women placed fourth (106 points) and the men placed fifth (138 points).

Delaware State’s top runners for the contest were Nicole Gazzola placing 15th (22:20.78) on the women’s side, while Emanuel Hitch finished 22nd (19:07.44) for the men.

Coppin State was also at the Lid-Lifter Invitation this past Saturday and finished second in the men’s race (46 points) and fifth in women’s (124 points).

Unlike the other two competing schools, this will be Howard’s first cross country meet of the young season.

The Hornet Invitational will be the first of four home events for Delaware State’s cross country program this year. Next weekend, the Columbia Blue & Red will head to Princess Anne, Md. for the Cappy Anderson Invitational, hosted by the UMES Hawks.

(Smyrna, Del.) – In what was the first of four home competitions this season, the Delaware State cross country program battled wet and muddy conditions during Saturday’s 5K Hornet Invitational with the women placing fourth (104 points), while the men finished fifth (132 points).

“This meet was an eye-opener and not so much of a wake-up because we kind of knew what we had coming in,” said newly appointed head coach Damion Drummond. “It wasn’t a high demand to run a great time, it was more about being competitive and finishing the race and doing what you have to do.”

On the women’s side, UMES finished first (26 points) with six runners finishing in the top 10, whereas Morgan State placed second (33 points) with Karen Escobedo (19:45.00) and Jada Boyd (20:32.00) crossing the finish line in first and second, respectively. Nicole Gazzola, meanwhile, registered DSU’s best performance with a time of 21:49.30 to finish 11th.

“Today, I think it went a lot better than at UMES, the first race,” said Gazzola, who finished 15th (22:20.78) in last week’s Lid-Lifter Invitational. “I’m getting a little bit used to it now and think I’ll get better from here on out.”

Rounding out notable performances for the DSU women were Erin Cooper (16th – 22:38.70), Sabrina Burrell (23rd – 23:21.40) and Ashley Robinson (25th – 23:37.80).

Winning the men’s race were the Hawks, led by Khalil Kinini Rmidi finishing first with a time of 15.48.00. Behind him were teammates Jordan Leon (16:34.60) and Stanley Meli (16:42.40). In the case of the Hornets, Emmanuel Hitch placed 20th (19:37.30) to lead all runners for Delaware State.

“As a whole, I think we did good considering the fact that none of us run cross country,” said Hitch of his team’s performance. “Everyone really tried and put effort into the race, so I’m satisfied with that.”

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will head to Princess Anne, Md. for the second time of 2015, this time to take part in UMES’s Cappy Anderson Invitational next Saturday (10:30 a.m.).

EARLY FIRST HALF STRIKE BY UMBC DOOMS DSU IN HOMESTAND FINALE

Fri, September 18, 2015
(Dover, Del.) – In what was the finale of a season-long four-game homestand, the Delaware State women’s soccer team (2-6-1) suffered its second consecutive 1-0 loss, this time to the visiting UMBC Retrievers (2-6-1) Friday night at Alumni Stadium.

With this defeat, the Hornets remained winless against UMBC, while Friday night’s win for the Retrievers snapped a four-game slide.

“I just think we’ve lost two tough 1-0 games, but we’re much improved from last year,” said head coach Kerri Scroope after the match. “Being this close and having the amount of shots we’ve had the last two games and not being able to finish has been our problem.”

The lone goal occurred early in the first half, when UMBC’s Alexa Quaranta (1) controlled the ball at close range after a shot by forward Amanda Dailey. As a result, Quaranta – who finished the night with a game-high six shots - fired an attempt past DSU’s Michele Lammers during the 12th minute.

Despite trailing 1-0 heading the rest of the way, DSU totaled 12 out of its 15 shots in the second period. During the 66th minute, the Hornets had a grand opportunity to tie the game, when UMBC committed a foul deep in DSU territory, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for defender Morgan Durham. Unfortunately, the senior out of Clayton, N.J., could not capitalize, as her attempt went wide left.

DSU had yet another chance to make it a tie ball game thanks to UMBC committing another one of its game-high 10 infractions. Nevertheless, the Hornets were unable to take advantage, as midfielder Elsie Pratt’s back-to-back attempts during the 79th minute from about 20 yards out were to no avail.

At game’s end, UMBC totaled 11 shots and eight corner kicks, while winning goalkeeper Jen Nance moved to 2-4-1 on the season with a four-save effort for her first shutout victory of 2015. Lammers, on the other hand, collected three saves, despite allowing the early first half goal.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will hit the road for back-to-back road games, beginning with George Washington this Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.).

“George Washington is going to be a tough for one us,” said Scroope. “They’re usually a Top-100 team. We’re just going have to keep our composure, apply some pressure and play hard.”

HORNETS HEAD TO UMES FOR CAPPY ANDERSON INVITATIONAL
Courtesy DSU Athletic Media Relations
Fri, September 18, 2015
(Dover, Del.) – The Delaware State cross country program is set for its third meet of the season with the Cappy Anderson Invitational this Saturday, which will take place at the Lexus Driving Range/UMES Cross Country Pavilion in Princess Anne, Md. (10:30 a.m.).

In the first two events of the season, the women have had two fourth place finishes, while the men have had two fifth place finishes.

The Hornets will see many familiar faces at this event, including the runners for the UMES Hawks, who have won both races in the first two meets of the year.

Along with the Hawks and Hornets, Morgan State, Coppin State, Norfolk State, Navy and Seton Hall will also be competing.

For Delaware State, the top finisher so far through 2015 for the men and women has been: Nicole Gazzola and Emmanuel Hitch.

Gazzola placed 15th (22:20.78) in UMES’s Lid-Lifter Invitational (Sept. 5), followed by an 11th place finish (21:49.30) last weekend at the Hornet Invitational.

Hitch, meanwhile, clocked a 19:07.44 to place 22nd to open 2015, but rebounded the following week by crossing the finish line at 19:37.30 to place 20th.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will back in action on Oct. 2 when they host the DSU Farm Run invitational.

The Opponent

» Saint Peter’s Peacocks (1-6, 0-1 MAAC)

Despite its lone victory of 2015 – an 11-2 home victory over first-year program Hampton on Sept. 7 – the Peacocks have lost each contest by at least two goals. In its previous match, Saint Peter’s were shutout at Siena, allowing a season-high seven goals. Offensively, the Peacocks have totaled 16 goals in 2015, led by forward Barbara Paiva (4). Behind Paiva, forward Michelle Laz and midfielder Jasmine Tartis both have three goals on the season, whereas Tartis leads Saint Peter’s in shots on-goal (11). In the net, sophomoreTaylor McLean secured the Peacocks’ lone victory, as she’s allowed 23 goals and totaled 31 saves.

» The Series: The Hornets are 2-8-1 all-time against Saint Peter’s. Last season, DSU secured a convincing 3-0 home victory over the Peacocks.

A Win Would Mean…

» DSU’s first win since 2-1 home victory over Manhattan on Sept. 13.

» The Hornets’ second road victory of 2015.

»Delaware State’s third overall victory against Saint Peter’s.

Last Time Out…

The Hornets were shutout for the third consecutive contest – this time resulting in a 2-0 loss on the road to the George Washington Colonials Sunday afternoon. For GW, leading point-getter Mackenzie Cowley connected for both of Sunday’s goals. The first occurred early in the first half during the 12th minute with put it past DSU’s Michele Lammers from about 22 yards out, after receiving a pass from defender Mia Barreda. The second strike, meanwhile, took place during 69th minute with midfielder Ingrid DiClemente finding Cowley at close range.

Scroope Approaching Milestone

With nine career wins as DSU’s head coach, Kerri Scroope needs two victories to pass Matt Okoh (2005-07) to become the program’s all-time leader. In 2014 - Scroope’s second season at the helm - she led the Hornets to their second best finish in team history (6-12-1), in addition to being named Independent Conference Coach of the Year by College Sports Madness.

At This Point Last Season…

The Hornets were 2-8, coming off a 2-0 loss at home to George Washington.

Coming Up Next…

The Columbia Blue & Red will return home this Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.) to face Mount St. Mary’s.

The veteran trio of seniors Morgan Durham, Tere’ Crawford and junior Taylor Pratcher headlines the backline for DSU in 2015.

HORNETS PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN 2015-16 MEAC RACE
Courtesy DSU Athletic Media Relations
Tue, October 13, 2015
Dover, Del. (Oct. 13, 2015) --- After reaching the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship game last season, the Delaware State men’s basketball team has been given long odds in the league’s 2015-16 regular season race.

The Hornets have been picked to finish ninth in the 13-team MEAC this season, according to a poll of league head coaches and sports information representatives announced today.

Delaware State was sixth in the final 2014-15 MEAC regular season standings with a 9-7 record. The Hornets won three straight MEAC Tournament contests before falling to Hampton in the championship game.

North Carolina Central is the voters’ choice to capture its third straight MEAC regular season title. The Eagles were 16-0 in last year’s race and the No. 1 MEAC Tournament seed, but lost to the Hornets in the tourney semifinals.

Defending MEAC Tournament champ Hampton has been picked to finish second in this year’s regular season race, while Norfolk State, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Howard round out the top five.

"Given the talent we graduated from last year’s squad, I’m not surprised about our standing in the poll,” said Delaware State head coach Keith Walker. “I believe we have a young and talented team that is capable of doing big things this season. Preseason polls are good for conversation, but the games are won on the court; and I believe we will surprise some people in the conference this season.”

The Hornets must replace five seniors that helped lead the 2015 MEAC championship game run, including three of the school’s all-time greats. The departures include center Kendall Gray, the 2014-15 MEAC Player-of-the-Year and Defensive Player-of-the-Year; guard Amere May, the MEAC’s top scorer last season; and sharp-shooting forward Tyshawn Bell, the school’s third all-time leading three-point marksman.

Other departures include guards Kendal Williams and Charles Burley. Williams averaged 8.5 points and dished out a team-high 93 assists, while Burley was second on the squad with 88 helpers.

Gray, the Hornets’ all-time leading shot blocker with 305, became the second player in MEAC history to capture player-of-the-year and top defender honors.

May averaged a league-high 21.0 points per game last season, highlighted by 48 points vs. St. Francis Brooklyn, the top scoring contest in Div. I during the 2014-15 season.

Bell tallied 204 three-point field goals in his four seasons with the Hornets.

The MEAC also announced its Preseason Player-of-the-Year and all-conference teams.

Redshirt senior guard Jeff Short of Norfolk State has been selected as the league’s Preseason Player-of-the-Year. Short is joined on the first team by guard James Daniel of Howard (jr.), Hampton swingman Quinton Chievous (gr.), forward Bruce Beckford of North Carolina A&T (sr.) and UMES center Dominqiue Elliott (sr.).

No Delaware State player was selected to the MEAC’s preseason first, second or third team.

The Hornets will tip-off the 2015-16 season at home against the University of Delaware on Nov. 13. DSU also has home contests against Penn (Nov. 17) and Lamar (Nov. 21) in the season’s first week.

Delaware State will begin a three-game California road swing at Cal-Riverside on Nov. 24. The Hornets will also visit Cal State Fresno (Nov. 27) and San Francisco (Nov. 29) during the Golden State trip.

DSU's non-conference schedule also includes road contests at Old Dominion (Dec. 4), Michigan (Dec. 12), Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. (Dec. 15), Temple (Dec. 19), Utan (Dec. 22) and Texas Christian (Dec. 28).

The Hornets will begin MEAC play on Jan. 9 at Morgan State.
