CEDAR FALLS, Iowa
– UNI wrestler Max Thomsen earned a spot at the NWCA All-Star Classic 2017 set for 3 p.m. ET Nov. 5 in New Jersey.

“It has always been a dream,” said Thomsen. “I have seen a lot of great wrestlers compete in this, and I’m excited I get this opportunity.”

Thomsen joins teammate Drew Foster for the prestigious event.

“Everything is a big stage, you know?” said head coach Doug Schwab. “You earn these opportunities, and you have to enjoy them and make the most of them. Being the all-star dual, it’s a big deal. It shows he is one of the best guys in the country, which Max has planned to be since day one. Now other people are recognizing it too.”

Only 20 collegiate male wrestlers nationwide will be competing. There also will be a women's division.

“I am just focusing on having a good time and soaking it all in and taking advantage of a good opportunity,” Thomsen said. “It’s a pretty prestigious event, and I’m just lucky I get to wrestle in it. Summer went great. It went fast, and I’ve been in Cedar Falls training all summer. I’m excited to get things going.”

Thomsen and Foster will be the first Panthers competing in the event since 2004.

“I don’t know how many other teams have more than one guy at this event,” Schwab said. “So that already makes it a big deal. It puts a spotlight on the program, and people take notice. I am excited for these guys to compete. It’s been a while since they have been out there. That’s what I am excited to see, the growth they’ve had in a big atmosphere. These guys are ready to compete.”

The event will be held Princeton University's Jadwin Gymnasium in Princeton, New Jersey. Thomsen will face sophomore Matt Kolodzik from Princeton. Kolodzik is the first freshman to earn All-America honors for Princeton. He earned the No. 4 seed and finished seventh at 141 pounds at the 2017 Division I National Championships.

Thomsen earned his first All-America title with a fifth-place finish at 149 pounds at the 2017 NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships. Thomsen, a business major, is a sophomore from La Porte City, Iowa. He was a four-time state champion competing for Union High School.

“For Max, I want to see all the things we’ve worked on all spring, summer and fall, to see those take hold in competition,” Schwab said. “The room is one thing, but to take hold in competition is another. You saw how much he grew through last season. So hopefully, he is at a different point this season and he grows that much again. It’s another starting point for the season.”

UNI wrestling will open its season Nov. 4 at the Harold Nichols Open in Ames, Iowa. The first home dual is set in the West Gym against North Dakota State 2 p.m. CT Nov. 12.

Foster will be facing senior Pete Renda of North Carolina State. Renda is a three-time NCAA qualifier and earned All-America honors in 2016. He redshirted last season after placing third at 184 pounds in 2016. He qualified as a true freshman and sophomore at 174 pounds.

ALL-STAR CLASSIC TICKETS
Fans wishing to attend the All-Star Classic may purchase general admission tickets for $20. A social will run prior to the event and cost $50.
Olympic champions Kyle Snyder, Helen Maroules and Brandon Slay will join two-time NCAA champion Joe Dubuque to conduct a clinic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET. Youth of all ages, up to and including graduating high school seniors are eligible for the clinic. The cost is $30 for the clinic or $40 for the clinic and ticket to the all-star match.
"It's really a showcase of the best guys in the country," Schwab said. "All eyes are on that dual that day. Hopefully we can get one more guy in. He's definitely in the hunt for that. We'll find out soon if we will get him in too. If not, we'll have Drew going."
BY THE NUMBERS
  • UNI finished 18th at the 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, the highest finish since 2014. The Panthers qualified seven wrestlers, the most since 2014.
  • Two All-Americans return for the Panthers, the most since the 2004-05 season. Sophomore Max Thomsen, a La Porte City, Iowa, native, returns after taking fifth at 149 pounds at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Junior Drew Foster finished seventh at 184 pounds.

Cream Rises to Top Crimson, 30-16

Six Hoosiers earn bonus point wins in preseason scrimmage

October 26, 2017

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana's wrestling team celebrated the start of the 2017-18 season with an intersquad scrimmage, dubbed the Cream & Crimson Dual, on Thursday evening at University Gymnasium. The Hoosiers' Cream team won eight of the 11 bouts on the slate for a 30-16 victory.

The Hoosiers' coaching staff evenly separated the teams with a blend of returning starters, prospects looking for a breakthrough into this year's lineup, and newcomers who have proven their mettle in their short time with the team. Six wrestlers picked up bonus points in their wins, with Cole Weaver and Jake Kleimola earning wins by fall.

The evening began at 133 lbs. with Brandon James and Michael De La Peña, but the bout order bounced around the weights from there. James emerged victorious with a 7-3 decision to spark a 7-0 run for the Cream team.

The pair of IU heavyweights, Fletcher Miller and Zach Horwitz, followed with the second bout of the night. Miller showed his offseason progress with a 16-5 technical fall, the first of two five-point wins for the Hoosiers.

The first fall of the night came in the third bout at 141 lbs. between Weaver and newcomer A.J. Raya. Weaver stuck his counterpart in 72 seconds to give Crimson their first points, pulling the match to 7-6.

Cream pulled away when they refused to yield points for the next five matches. Davey Tunon began that run in his 149 lbs. match with Austin Holmes, winning a 2-0 decision between two freshmen anxious to begin their first varsity seasons.

Junior and returning NCAA qualifier Jake Danishek capped his preseason on a high note with a 19-3 technical fall over promising newcomer Dillon Hoey, extending Cream's lead to 15-6. Garrett Pepple pushed the differential once more with an 8-3 decision victory over Kyle Luigs in the evening's second 133 lbs. match.

Next came a bout between two lengthy 197 lbs. grapplers, Jake Kleimola and Mike Maguire, to start the closing stretch of the dual meet. Kleimola secured Cream's only win by fall over Maguire, clearing the way for a thrilling match at 125 lbs.

Indiana's lightweight duo, Elijah Oliver and Liam Cronin, have been drilling together for the last season and exchanged starts throughout the 2016-17 campaign. Their competitive nature poured into the U-Gym during their preseason bout, leading to a 1-1 tie after two periods. Oliver emerged with the 3-1 win on a takedown in the final seconds.

Bryce Martin became the second Crimson grappler to put points on the board with a win by technical fall over Logan Herrera, 24-9. Devin Skatzka, ranked as high as No. 15 in the national preseason polls, followed with an 18-0 takedown against Gabe Koontz that included a quartet of four-point tilts.

The final match of the evening provided some of the biggest thrills when Norman Conley and Jake Hinz squared off at 184 lbs. The pair battled back and forth throughout last season at 197 lbs., but both guys are enjoying their ability to execute at the lower weight. That set up an exciting final period, when Hinz escaped early to cut Conley's lead to 3-2. The two grappled for position, hoping to score a decisive takedown and win the spot for at least a week. Hinz fired a shot with time winding down to zero, and had Conley in the air, but time expired before Hinz could secure his position.

Up Next: Indiana (0-0) at the 2017 Clarion Open

The Hoosiers are anxious to step on the mats at the 2017 Clarion Open and officially begin their season next weekend. Indiana's travel party for the first open tournament weekend will be determined in the coming days, and fans can follow all the action on FloWrestling.org and FloArena. Once the list of attending teams becomes clear, IUHoosiers will break down the potential matchups for Indiana's wrestlers.

Colton McCrystal won both of his matches at 149 pounds at Nebraska's Intrasquad Wrestle-Offs on Friday night.
The Nebraska wrestling team held its annual Intrasquad Friday evening at the Devaney Center, which this year featured wrestle-offs at each weight class, as fans got a chance to see the 2017-18 squad for the first time.

The Huskers competed in a total of 24 bouts on Friday, including at least one at each weight class while seven weight classes held multiple matches.

Returning NCAA qualifiers Tyler Berger and Colton McCrystal each put on a show for the fans at the Wrestle-Offs, as Berger, an All-American at 157 a season ago, won the final match of the evening in a 13-5 major decision. McCrystal, who qualified for NCAAs at 141 last year, is set to jump up a weight class to 149, and won both of his matches on the evening.

Isaiah White, an NCAA Division II national champion at Notre Dame College (Ohio) a season ago, also went 2-0 on the evening, winning his first bout in a decision and his second in a major decision at 165 pounds. Chad Red Jr. (141) won both of his matches, earning both a decision and a pin. Kris Williams (125), Beau Breske (174) and Patrick Grayson (HWT) each went 2-0 on the night as well.

Redshirt freshmen Taylor Venz (184) and Eric Schultz (197) both won their only matches of the night by pin.

Brian Peska won the only bout contested at 133 on Friday.

The Huskers open their season at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open next Sunday, Nov. 5, before beginning the dual season against Wyoming on Nov. 17 at the Devaney Center. Tickets to the Wyoming dual, as well as each of the seven home duals are on sale now and can be purchased at Huskers.com/Tickets or by calling 1-800-8-BIG-RED.

Team Green comes from behind to top Team Black, 28-25
10/27/2017 | Wrestling
OREM, Utah - Team Green took home seven of the final nine matches en route to defeating Team Black, 28-25, at Utah Valley University wrestling's annual Green & Black Intrasquad Dual on Friday evening at Lockhart Arena.

With the black squad holding to a 25-18 advantage with just two matches to go, freshman 174-pounder Dante Springsteen delivered a 16-3 decision and 125-pound redshirt freshman Taylor LaMont followed that up with a second-period fall (4:13) to complete the comeback and give the green squad the three-point win.

"It was good for the guys to get out of the room and get a chance to compete," head UVU coach Greg Williams said. "We saw a number of things that we can work on. We have some pretty good experience in our youth this season, and most of our redshirt freshmen and redshirt sophomores did a great job. I want to see us open up more throughout our lineup, but we've got some guys that will be very successful and we were able to see some of that talent on display tonight."

The black team jumped out to a quick 17-3 advantage in the exhibition contest after winning five of the first six bouts. Sophomore 165-pounder Koy Wilkinson and 2017 NCAA qualifier and 197-pound redshirt sophomore Tanner Orndorff led the spurt for Team Black with respective 12-3 and 12-2 major decisions.

Trailing 17-3, freshman 157-pounder Brooks Robinson then responded for the green team with a 5-2 decision over fellow freshman Spencer Heywood to start a four-match winning streak for Team Green. Robinson, redshirt freshman Gary Jantzer (184 pounds), redshirt junior Matthew Ontiveros (149) and redshirt sophomore Kieffer Taylor (165) all recorded wins during the spurt for the green team to pull within two at 17-15.

Boise State transfer Demetrius Romero (165) and freshman Tate Orndorff (285) then responded for the black squad by winning two of the next three bouts by major decision to give the black team a 25-18 advantage. That's when Springsteen and LaMont helped the green team complete the comeback, however, with back-to-back bonus-point wins in the final two bouts of the contest.

LaMont, Romero, Jantzer, Ontiveros, senior Jarod Maynes (141), and 2017 NCAA qualifiers Tanner Orndorff and Dustin Dennison (285) all earned challenge-match victories on the night.

Romero was also the lone Wolverine to record more than one victory in the contest, as he earned a 7-3 decision win over Taylor as well as a 22-8 major decision over Kyle Snelling.

"There's really nobody in our starting lineup that won't go out there and give us 100 percent. If somebody gets hurt, we might have a couple of wrestlers that aren't quite there yet, but we have a few others that are close to being at that level as well," Williams added. "Our fans are going to be able watch some really talented, aggressive wrestling this year and we're excited about it."

UVU will officially open its 2017-18 season at the Clarion Duals on Friday, Nov. 3 in Clarion, Pennsylvania. There the Wolverines face Big 12 foe West Virginia, Kent State and the host Clarion Golden Eagles. Utah Valley will then remain in Pennsylvania to take part at the Clarion Open later that weekend on Sunday, Nov. 5.

Another major decision at 141 gave CSUB an 8-3 lead. Jason Estevez responded with a 7-6 decision over Kalani Tonge to cut the Roadrunner advantage to 8-6.

BLACKSBURG - To get fans prepared for No. 9 Virginia Tech’s home and season opener against No. 21 Stanford on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., Inside Hokie Sports’ Jimmy Robertson put together previews for each weight class. Here’s Tech’s outlook in the upperweights:

174 pounds – Tech’s staff faces a little uncertainty at this weight class, as it tries to replace Zach Epperly. The competition for the starting nod really comes down to two wrestlers – redshirt sophomore Cody Hughes and freshman Hunter Bolen.

Hughes took a redshirt season last year, but went 15-8 in limited action as a true freshman two years ago. Bolen, from nearby Christiansburg, ranked as one of the top recruits in the nation. He won three state titles in his career, but perhaps more impressively, won the 160-pound crown at the prestigious Beast of the East tournament this past December.

“Cody has been in the program for two years, and he’s been a guy that is consistent with his work ethic and his effort,” head coach Tony Robie said. “He’s steadily and quietly improved over the course of the past two years. He seems to be the guy that I would have to pinpoint as the favorite.

“Hunter Bolen is right there with him. There is a possibility that Hunter redshirts this year. We’ll have to see how things progress over the course of the next several weeks, but those are the two top guys at 174.”

184 pounds – Tech lacks depth in this weight class, but it returns a stalwart in Zack Zavatsky, a two-time ACC champion entering his redshirt junior season. Zavatsky went 25-4 last season and qualified for the NCAA Championships, though he missed on earning All-America honors.

“He’s coming off two seasons when he had good regular seasons, but had some disappointments at the NCAA tournament,” Robie said. “There is no other way to say it. But Zack is incredibly talented and has proven that he can wrestle with the best guys in the country. To me, he’s a top-four guy [nationally], and that’s what he’s got to do. That’s what he has to prove when he steps out there in March. He knows that. We know that. Everyone who has watched him wrestle knows how good he is.”

Freshman Stan Smeltzer, a two-time state champion from Smithfield, Virginia, serves as the backup.

197 pounds – Jared Haught returns to the Hokies’ lineup as the team leader and a threat to win an NCAA title. A year ago, he advanced to the semifinals at this weight class before losing to Olympic bronze medalist J’Den Cox of Missouri – who ultimately went on to win the national title. Cox, though, graduated, along with runner-up Brett Pfarr from Minnesota, so Haught certainly has an opportunity. The two-time All-American went 28-4 last season.

“It’s pretty obvious what the goal is for him,” Robie said. “He’s got to set his sights on winning the national title, and he certainly has. We’re excited to watch him compete. It’s on for Jared. He’s got a chance to be a three-time All-American and a national champion and the most successful wrestler to come through Virginia Tech. That’s exciting.

“I know he’s excited. Nobody works harder than that guy, and nobody is tougher than that guy. He’s chomping at the bit to get back out there.”

Redshirt sophomore Dylan Cook and freshman John Borst went into the fall as backups behind Haught. Cook took a redshirt year last season, while Borst finished his career as a three-time state champion at Sherando High in Sherando, Virginia.

Heavyweight – Perhaps no loss on Tech’s roster looms bigger than that of Walz, who served as the heart and soul of the program the past two years. Walz concluded his career as a three-time All-American, twice finishing fourth. He went 26-4 last season and won at least 26 matches in all four years of his career.

The frontrunner to replace Walz is Andrew Dunn, a redshirt freshman from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

“I’m excited to see him compete,” Robie said. “It’s truly difficult to gauge these guys based on what you see every day in practice. You know what they’re putting into it, but I want to see him compete, and hopefully that optimism I have for Andrew right now carries over, and we see that as a finished product when he steps out on the mat.

“He’s a freshman. He’s going to have some good moments and bad moments. That’s a part of being young, but he’s proven to me that wrestling is important to him, and he’s willing to commit himself to it. He’s really done a good job of attaching himself to Ty Walz and training with Ty [who is helping this season] and trying to absorb everything that Ty brings to the table.”

Brooks Wilding goes into the season as the backup. Wilding used to wrestle at 184 and 197, but bulked up to give the Hokies some depth at heavyweight.

Tech opens the season Nov. 4 against Stanford, and that marks the start of a difficult slate. In addition to playing Stanford, the Hokies take on quality programs such as Chattanooga and Central Michigan, along with Missouri, which heads into the season ranked No. 5 nationally.

On the ACC level, NC State figures to be the frontrunner, as it returns a lot of its lineup and gets a couple of guys back from redshirt seasons. Virginia and North Carolina also will be tough, and Pittsburgh, under a new coach, could make things interesting.

Tech may not be picked to win the ACC, but Robie and this staff like this group. The coaches like the combination of experience, youth and talent – and they welcome the challenge of proving people wrong.

After all, this is a proud program. This group only knows one thing – winning – and the players and coaches plan on doing just that.

“When you look at how our team sets up, there is going to be a learning curve, with so many young guys and so many new faces in the lineup,” Robie said. “It’s going to be difficult to duplicate what we did the past two years, but I still think we have a very good team. We have some great individuals. We have some really good young kids that can do some great things. So I’m excited about that.”

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI wrestling opens its 2018 season on the road with an open tournament for most of the team, and feature matches for the returning All-Americans.

Most of the Panthers will be competing at Iowa State’s open tournament set to start 9 a.m. Saturday.

“We go to Cornell Nov. 17. This weekend certainly going to set our lineup for the upcoming duals,” said head coach Doug Schwab.

UNI returns to the mat with the most returning NCAA qualifiers since the 2009 season when seven returned.

UNI will be sending Max Thomsen and Drew Foster to the NWCA All-Star Classic. They are the first Panthers to compete at the featured event since 2004.

Thomsen of La Porte City, Iowa, will face sophomore Matt Kolodzik from Princeton. Kolodzik is the first freshman to earn All-America honors for Princeton. In 2017, he earned the No. 4 seed and finished seventh at 141 pounds at the Division I National Championships.

Thomsen, a sophomore, took fifth in the 149-pound weight class at the 2017 Division I National Championships.

Foster, a junior, was seventh at 184 pounds in the 2017 national tournament. He faces senior Pete Renda of North Carolina State.

Renda is a three-time NCAA qualifier and earned All-America honors in 2016. He redshirted last season after placing third at 184 pounds in 2016. He qualified as a true freshman and sophomore at 174 pounds.

DAVE SCHULTZ MEMORIAL
Four wrestlers with Panther ties will be competing in the freestyle division at the Dave Schultz Memorial.

Current Panther and two-time NCAA qualifier Bryce Steiert will be redshirting for UNI this year and will open his season this weekend in the 74-kilogram weight class.

Panther Wrestling Club member Joey Lazor will compete at 65K. Former Panthers Joe Colon and Blaize Cabell will compete at 61K and 97K, respectively.

Duke Opens 2017-18 at Hokie Open

November 3, 2017

FloWrestling Live Brackets

DURHAM, N.C.—After months of summer training that extended into the fall, Duke wrestling is back. The Blue Devils will hit the mat officially for the 2017-18 season at the Hokie Open Wrestling Tournament Sunday, Nov. 5. The tournament will be held at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Va.

Attend the Tournament

Wrestling commences at 10:01 a.m., in Roanoke. Admission for fans is $15 for adults and $5 for high school students and free for kids in grades K-8. Tickets can be purchased at the doors, which open to the general public at 9 a.m.

How to Follow the Action

Fans unable to attend can follow all of the live brackets on FloWrestling and also track Duke wrestling on Twitter (@DukeWRES) for updates throughout the tournament. There will be no live video due to ACC video rights restrictions.

Recapping the 2016 Southeast Open

The Blue Devils came away with a pair of titles at the 2016 Southeast Open, which has since been renamed the Hokie Open Wrestling Tournament this year. Jacob Kasper and Connor Bass finished atop the heavyweight and 174 pounds. Kasper returns to defend his title, while Thayer Atkins looks to improve on his consolation semifinal showing at 125 pounds. Redshirt freshmen Josh Copeland and Roman Romero were solid in the freshman – sophomore division last season, taking sixth and advancing to the quarterfinal, respectively.

Preseason Rankings

Jacob Kasper and Mitch Finesilver are peppered throughout the various preseason rankings. Kasper is a consensus No. 6 pick at heavyweight and is the preseason favorite to take home the 2018 ACC title, while Mitch is 11th in the preseason FloWrestling rankings. He also is considered the ACC’s top 157-pounder according to Flo. Mitch will suit up in a Duke singlet in December, competing unattached up to that point.

Big Rookie Class Makes Collegiate Debut

The largest freshman class in head coach Glen Lanham’s career will be making its debut Sunday. The majority of the 11-man group will hit the mat in Roanoke as it gets its first taste of collegiate wrestling. Nine different weights are represented in the group and as many as three or four could earn spots in the dual lineup in January.

Schenk Moving Up to 197

Redshirt junior Alec Schenk will see his first action as a 197-pounder this weekend. Working tirelessly over the summer in the weight and wrestling rooms, Schenk will bump up one division from 184. He posted a 12-14 record last season as the starter, including a 3-2 mark against ACC foes. The Perry, Ohio native went 1-2 last season at the Hokie Open.

Looking Ahead

Duke will take a weekend off from competition before much of the Blue Devil lineup heads to Philadelphia for the Keystone Classic. The remainder of the squad will stay close to home for the Wolfpack Open in Raleigh. That will be the final competition until the Cliff Keen Open the first weekend in December.

Four Panthers Reach Podium at #CKLV

Zanetta, Solomon Place Sixth; Rahmani, Forys Place Seventh

Pitt Results

LAS VEGAS – Four Panthers reached the podium at the 36th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

A pair of redshirt seniors took sixth in their respective weight classes in Nick Zanetta at 141 pounds and Ryan Solomon at heavyweight.

Senior Dom Forys placed seventh at 133 pounds and redshirt sophomore Taleb Rahmani also took seventh at 157 pounds.

"We came here to test ourselves against some high-level competition and the trip definitely served its purpose," said head coach Keith Gavin. "This is a very tough tournament and I'm glad we decided to attend. We have some good competitors on this team and each of our guys know where they need to improve on moving forward. We will continue to work and trust the process."

Forys got the day started with a 6-1 decision over Ali Naser of Arizona State in the consolation round of eight. He then fell in the consolation quarterfinals to the No. 11 seed Austin DeSanto of Drexel in an 11-9 decision. In his final match of the weekend, Forys downed North Carolina’s Zach Sherman in a 15-3 major decision to take seventh place.

Zanetta continued his winning ways in his first match of the day in the consolation round of eight, defeating Russell Rohfling of CSU-Bakersfield in a 10-6 decision. Zanetta previously lost to Rohfling two weeks ago in Bakersfield in sudden victory. In the consolation quarterfinals, Zanetta won in a 4-2 decision over Kanen Storr of Iowa State. However, Zanetta’s run would fall short as he had to medical forfeit his remaining matches to take sixth place.

Rahmani opened his day by pinning West Virginia’s Zach Moore in 4:55 to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. He then took on Coleman Hammond of CSU-Bakersfield, who he pinned two weeks ago in a dual meet versus CSUB, and dropped a 14-8 decision. Rahmani captured seventh place after pinning Tristan Rifanburg of Binghamton in 2:04.

Solomon also started the day strong as he defeated Columbia’s Garrett Ryan in a 7-2 decision to push him to the consolation quarterfinals. He posted another win by decision, this time over Jeramy Sweany of Cornell, 8-1. In the consolation semifinals, Solomon dropped a 3-1 decision to the No. 5 seed Nathan Butler of Stanford. Solomon’s run in the tournament came to an end in the fifth place match as he was stopped by Purdue’s Shawn Streck again as he was pinned in 33 seconds.

The Panthers have some time off before resuming action as they host Clarion Dec. 16 in the home opener in the Fitzgerald Field House.

Wrestling Drops Big Ten Opener at No. 2 Ohio State

Three Hoosiers start conference campaign with wins

Story Link | Results (PDF) | TrackWrestling

December 10, 2017

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio – Indiana's wrestling team sparked their Big Ten dual meet season on Sunday afternoon inside Tim Beyerle Memorial Gymnasium at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, facing No. 2/2 Ohio State on a neutral mat. The Hoosiers (6-2, 0-1) picked up a trio of bout wins but fell 26-9 to the Buckeyes (4-0, 1-0).

Following junior Elijah Oliver's (125) decision win to open the meet, the Buckeyes grabbed five straight bout wins—two by one-point decisions—to gain an insurmountable lead. Redshirt sophomore Devin Skatzka (174) and redshirt junior Fletcher Miller (285) collected decision victories to help the Hoosiers split the final four bouts.

Oliver (13-6) earned his 60th career victory by taking a 9-5 decision over Brakan Mead (6-8) in the first bout of the day. Leading 4-3 after two periods, IU's two-time NCAA qualifier scored two takedowns in the final period to secure a 1-0 start to Big Ten dual season and his first career win over a Buckeye grappler. Oliver is now 6-2 this season in dual meets and continues a five-match winning streak.

Skatzka (12-2) didn't find a rematch with No. 3 Bo Jordan but took care of business in his 8-5 decision victory over Fritz Schierl (16-3). Skatzka gained a 4-0 lead in the first period on a takedown and a two-point tilt. He continued in the second and built a 7-1 lead after five minutes, holding off Schierl's comeback effort in the final period. The 2017 NCAA qualifier remains unbeaten in dual meets (5-0) this season with a +24 team point differential.

Miller (9-3) ended the meet with a dramatic 3-1 victory against Kevin Snyder (12-6), his second career Big Ten dual win. The big guys were tied late at 1-1 on their respective escape chances, but Miller swung around for the bout's only takedown and the positive result.

13th-ranked redshirt junior Cole Weaver (141) saw his seven-match win streak snapped in a loss to No. 6 Joey McKenna (2-0). Weaver (14-3) couldn't break McKenna's defense and allowed the Buckeye to build a 6-1 first period lead on two takedowns and two back points.

Redshirt junior Bryce Martin (165) dropped an airtight 3-2 decision to Cody Burcher (1-0) after the midpoint. The bout was textbook for Martin's (12-5) career in terms of the close score line and its bizarre circumstances, as the match called for an injury timeout just as Martin appeared to be going for a fall. The ensuing official review determined that no points were scored before the stoppage, and Burcher's third-period takedown gave the Buckeyes their fifth consecutive win.

Thirteen of the Top-25 teams in the latest USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll will be in attendance at Midlands, including ranked Big Ten opponents No. 7 Iowa, No. 13 Illinois, No. 16 Wisconsin, and No. 23 Purdue.

2016 Midlands Recap

No. 11 Rutgers wrestling placed fourth (93 points) at the 54th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, earning a total of six placewinners in the two-day tournament at Welsh-Ryan Arena. 141-pounder Anthony Ashnault placed third to lead the Scarlet Knights in the event.

Ashnault's third-place match against Nebraska's Chad Red ended in a 17-0 tech fall rout. The match concluded with Ashnault pulling Red to the mat for a four-point near fall. The third-place finish is the highest for a Rutgers wrestler since Mario Mason's runner-up result in 2011 and bests Ashnault's fourth-place performance last season.

At 184 pounds, Gravina took sixth with a medical forfeit in the fifth-place match. At 133 pounds, DelVecchio earned a sixth-place finish. Current Scarlet Knights Jordan Pagano (7th - 174) and John Van Brill (8th - 157) also placed at last year's Midlands Championships

Knight Notes

• No. 2 Suriano (125), No. 9 Gravina (184), No. 14 DelVecchio (133), No. 14 DeLuca (149) and No. 15 Lewis (165) all appear in the latest rankings by Intermat.

• In total, 15 Scarlet Knights are set to compete this weekend in the 20-team field. Matthew Correnti, who is redshirting this season, will also appear unattached.

• Since 2000, Rutgers has had 27 wrestlers place at the Midlands Championships. The Scarlet Knights competed in the tournament last season, when they finished fourth as a team with six placewinners. The best individual finish at the event came from runner-up Mario Mason (149 Pounds) in 2011.

Collin Purinton is one of seven Huskers set to compete at the Midlands Championships this weekend.
Seven Nebraska wrestlers are set to take the mat against some of the nation's best competitors this Friday and Saturday at the 55th-annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships.

The two-day event will be held at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. The group of Huskers attending the tournament includes wrestlers who have not been among NU's regular starters through the first four duals this season, as well as potential redshirt candidates who will be looking to gain experience that comes from going toe-to-toe with some of the best wrestlers in the country.

A pair of Huskers, Collin Purinton and Jordan Shearer, are set to enter at 149 pounds. Purinton is 8-3 on the season, while Shearer is 7-2 as the two shared the title at the UNK Holiday Inn Open in November.

Luke Weber (157), Johnny Blankenship (165) and Patrick Grayson (HWT) each own at least 12 wins on the season and are set to compete for Nebraska this weekend. Blankenship is 16-5 on the year with a tournament title at the Doane Open, while Weber is 13-4 and Grayson is 12-5.

Jason Renteria and Mikey Labriola are set to compete unattached at the Midlands Championships. Renteria, a Chicago, Ill., native, is set to see the first action of his freshman season. He was named a top contender at 133 pounds by the Midlands Championships Committee. Labriola has rolled to three open tournament titles with three wins over ranked opponents this season, on the way to a 13-0 record with 10 bonus-point wins.

The tournament begins Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. (CT) with the first session, while the second session begins at 7 p.m. The semifinals will begin at noon on Saturday, with the finals, third-place and fifth-place matches set for 7 p.m. A live stream of the entire tournament will be available on BTN Plus and FloWrestling (subscription required), and live brackets can be found at TrackWrestling. More information, including a complete tournament schedule, can be found at the Midlands Championship Central page.

The 55th installment of the annual event, hosted by Northwestern University, sets up to be one for the ages as 38 teams convene at its new temporary home, the Sears Centre Arena. The Hoosiers have seen two wrestlers achieve podium finishes in each of the last two seasons, including returning fifth-place finisher Devin Skatzka (174), but this year's field is one of the best in recent memory.

Indiana will bring 15 grapplers in their travel party with first-time appearances from recent transfer Breyden Bailey (149) and IU volunteer assistant coach Brandon Wright (149). Follow all the action on the mat via BTN2Go.com and FloWrestling.com.

Last time: Entering the Lion's Den
The Hoosiers wrestled their final dual meet of 2017 two weekends ago, facing No. 1 Penn State at Rec Hall. Indiana fell on the team score, 44-3, as the top-ranked Nittany Lions earned seven wins with bonus points.

Hoosier junior Elijah Oliver started the meet with a decision win, his sixth consecutive victory and first career win against Penn State. Oliver is 2-0 in conference dual meets this year.

Midlands Championships Overview
The 34 teams entering this year's Midlands Championships have potential to bring dozens of the nation's top-ranked wrestlers to Sears Centre Arena. It's one of the deepest tournament fields in years as wrestlers from six top-ten teams are in attendance. Among the top contenders at every weight class, 18 grapplers rank in the national top ten.

The entrants also present a load of possible matchups against conference foes. The field includes 12 Big Ten teams, all but Ohio State and Michigan State.

IU Wrestling in the Rankings
The Hoosiers maintain a pair of ranked grapplers nine weeks into the season. Junior Cole Weaver (141) is as high as 15th (Open Mat) and found rankings from four polls, including 16th by InterMat. Weaver enters a 141 lbs. bracket that will feature a first-time Midlands Champion, regardless of result.

Devin Skatzka (174) held his No. 18 ranking (Open Mat) and earned a No. 20 spot from Amateur Wrestling News. Skatzka faces a bracket that includes five additional Big Ten contenders and No. 1 Zahid Valencia (Arizona State).

Back in Action
An exciting subplot to Indiana's Midlands weekend is the debut of two newcomers in the Hoosiers' wrestling room. Volunteer assistant coach Brandon Wright (149) continues a long-standing Midlands tradition of college graduates throwing their name into the field.

Wright is currently Team USA's third-ranked wrestler at 61 kg (134 lbs.) after earning the No. 2 podium spots at the US Open and the World Team trials.

Semester transfer Breyden Bailey (149) will be on the mat for the first time as a Hoosier as well. Bailey began his career last semester at Northern Illinois, where he tallied an 8-1 unattached record.

A reigning IHSAA State Champion, Bailey is the second active Hoosier to wrestle at Cathedral (Blake Rypel) and the fourth to hail from Fishers, Indiana (Rypel, Spencer Irick, Austin Holmes).

Up Next: Welcoming Wolverines
Indiana returns after the semester break with a their third Big Ten dual meet and a third consecutive meet versus a top-10 foe when they host No. 9 Michigan on Friday, January 5 at University Gymnasium. The 7:00 p.m. ET meet will be Indiana's first against the Wolverines since the 2015-16 season and their first at home in the series since 2014-15. The clash doubles as the ninth return visit to Bloomington for former Indiana head coach Joe McFarland (1989-92).

Back Points...
• Devin Skatzka's six pins have occurred in 15:14 aggregate time. The sophomore set a career best with a fall in 0:47 against Northern Illinois (12/2).

• Skatzka is IU's only returning Midlands podium-finisher (5th at 174 lbs. in 2016). He came one match short of a podium finish as a redshirt in 2015, when he pinned his first ranked opponent to enter the blood round.

• Indiana University has earned five Midlands titles across four wrestlers, with 40 podium finishes since 1964. 30 of those podium placements came under the watchful eye of IU head coach Duane Goldman.

• The Midlands Championships will serve as Indiana's last out-of-conference competition for the 2016-17 regular season.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

Jim Heffernan, Mark Johnson to be Inducted into Midlands Hall of Fame

Heffernan, Johnson first Illini to be inducted

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Current Illinois wrestling head coach Jim Heffernan and former Illini head coach Mark Johnson will be inducted into the Ken Kraft Midlands Hall of Fame on Saturday, December 30, prior to the finals of the 55th annual tournament. The first two Illini to ever be inducted into the exclusive club, Coach Heffernan and Coach Johnson have combined to coach all four of Illinois’ Midlands team titles and 11 of the 12 individual champions.

The first with Illini ties to enter the Hall of Fame, Coach Heffernan and Coach Johnson are the 52nd and 53rd members of the Midlands Hall of Fame.

A part of six team and five individual Midlands titles as an athlete or a coach, Jim Heffernan boasts continued success at the midseason holiday tournament.

As a four-time All-American wrestler at Iowa, Heffernan won the 150-pound Midlands title three times to go along with Iowa team titles in 1983 and 1985. In his last of the three individual crowns, Heffernan was named the 1986 Art Kraft Champion of Champions which goes to the top overall wrestler at each Midlands tournament.

Since joining the Illinois coaching staff as an assistant in 1992 under fellow inductee Mark Johnson, Heffernan has been a part of four more team Midlands titles, a three-peat from 2003 to 2005 and fourth team title in 2012 after taking over for Coach Johnson as head coach in 2009. In 2014 and 2016, Heffernan has guided two-time NCAA champion Isaiah Martinez to Midlands titles at 157 pounds and 165 pounds, respectively.

The Midlands induction will mark the third Hall of Fame induction for Jim Heffernan, adding to his 2006 National Wrestling Hall of Fame and 2015 Iowa Hall of Fame inductions.

Former Illini head coach Mark Johnson joins Heffernan in the 2017 Hall of Fame Class after leading the Illini to three straight Midlands team titles from 2003 to 2005 and eight individual Midlands champions. Of the eight Midlands titles, seven came during an eight-year span from 2002 to 2009 with one in every year except 2008.

A two-time NCAA Finalist at the University of Michigan, Johnson placed three times at the Midlands tournament, finishing runner-up in 1976 and 1979.

Coaching 17 seasons at the helm of the Illini, Johnson left the program with the most wins, NCAA Champions, All-Americans and NCAA qualifiers of any coach in Illini history. In 2005, Johnson broke Illinois’ 53-year Big Ten title drought and won a pair of Big Ten dual titles in 2005 and 2006. In 2001, Johnson led the program to its highest finish at NCAA Championships with a fifth-place finish behind NCAA Champions Adam Tirapelle and John Lockhart.

Johnson was named the 1995 National Coach of the Year and a two-time Big Ten Coach of the Year (2001, 2005).

'U' Handles Spartans in B1G Opener, 29-3
Match-By-Match Results at Bottom of Release

The University of Minnesota opened up the Big Ten wrestling season with a dominant performance against Michigan State, winning 29-3 despite having four regular starters out of the lineup.

Minnesota had to wrestle without No. 5 Ethan Lizak, No. 8 Mitch McKee, Owen Webster and Hunter Markowho have all made at least six starts this season in dual competition. Steve Polakowski, Skyler Petry, Ben Brancale and Dylan Anderson all stepped up and obtained victories for the Gophers who were wearing alternate anthracite singlets in the dual.

“It was an exciting day,” head coach Brandon Eggum said after the dual. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy today, but when you want to do great things, you have to have guys who step up to the challenge and make it happen. We talked about each one of those guys having to be a leader and set an example and get to their spots, and I think they did exactly that.”

The dual started at 141 with No. 10 Tommy Thorn taking on No. 18 Javier Gasca III. Thorn capitalized on a Gasca takedown attempt, spinning and scoring two of his own in the first. Thorn was able to earn an escape, and then a two-point near fall in the third after beginning the period on top and riding out Gasca for the victory over his ranked opponent.

At 149, Ben Brancale made his home dual debut and made the best of it. His aggressiveness was obvious, but the score was even in the third period. Brancale stepped up, and scored the match’s first takedown with just under a minute to go, and came away with a 3-2 decision over Austin Eicher.

After Jake Short was upended at 157 in a close 7-6 decision, fellow senior Nick Wanzek was there to get things rolling again for the Gophers. The ninth-ranked wrestler was once again scoring in bunches. He scored two takedowns, and on the second Wanzek had a tight grip on Austin Hiles arm, but time ran out before he could secure the pin. Wanzek went on to taking the match by major decision, 15-7. The major decision is his fifth in six matches, and it also gave the Gophers a 10-3 lead after four matches.

The final match before the halftime break was Chris Pfarr at 174 taking on Logan Ritchie. Pfarr and Ritchie both fought off takedowns, and headed into sudden victory time tied at one. Pfarr made quick of Ritchie with a takedown in sudden victory, earning him his sixth straight victory, marking the longest winning streak of his collegiate career. Minnesota would head to the locker room up 13-3 on the Michigan State Spartans.

After the 10-minute break, Anderson followed in Pfarr’s footsteps with a win in sudden victory. Anderson trailed for most of the match, and was down 5-4 with under a minute to go against Shwan Shadaia. Anderson, looking exhausted, came up with a huge score with just two seconds left in the third period to force overtime. Shadaia shot first in overtime, but Anderson sprawled and spun around Shadaia and earned his first home dual victory.

“Dylan’s match was just exciting,” Eggum said. “He made some mistakes, but he kept wrestling and fighting and as the match went on he continued to force his positions. Eventually his conditioning took over and he was able to put it into the overtime and win the match there. I know he felt good, he was excited, and we are glad he was able to step up today.”
With the Gophers running away with the dual, up 16-3, Bobby Steveson stepped onto the mat and continued where he left off on the second day of the South Beach Duals. Steveson wasted no time in his match, earning three takedowns in the first period alone, leading 6-2. He would double that number before the end of the match, giving him a 14-8 decision victory over Nick May.

At heavyweight, Rylee Streifel was relentless in his victory over Matt Lloyd. An early takedown seemingly broke Lloyd, and Streifel rode out May for 1:43 in the first period. In the second, Streifel escaped, and then scored once again to go up 5-0. Stalling was called before Streifel obtained the riding time point, giving him a 7-0 decision and his second shutout of the season.

Streifel’s victory at heavyweight was enough to clinch the dual victory for the Gophers, putting the score at 22-3.

Coming back to the top of the lineup, Polakowski stepped into the starting 125 role for Lizak. Polakowski, who wrestled at 125 at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships last week, was able to take an early lead against Rayvon Foley, who came in with an 18-3 record this season. Polakowski scored two takedowns in the first two periods, but a late takedown from Foley made it 4-4 heading into the final period.

In a mad sequence, Polakowski and Foley both him the mat chest to chest, but Polakowski fought and earned two, giving him a 6-5 decision when the horn rang out at Maturi Pavilion.

With McKee out, the Gophers were put into a situation where Skyler Petry moved up to 133-pounds to take on Matt Santos. The match was Petry’s first match at 133-pounds, and it would have been hard to notice after Petry’s 14-6 major decision.

Petry trailed for two periods in the match, but earned a takedown to cut the score to just 4-3 heading into the final period. Petry fired forward in the final period, eventually flipping Santos to his back and close to a pin. Petry wasn’t awarded the pin, but he settled for a four-point near fall and then the major decision.

“The most important thing is we just keep going out and do what we know we can do, and that is to fight hard,” Eggum said. “Not focusing on winning losing, but competing and representing the University of Minnesota in the best way possible.”

The Gophers will now shift their focus to Ohio State, who they will wrestle in Columbus, Ohio on Friday Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. That match will be able to be seen BTN Plus and FloWrestling.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

Gopher Comeback Defeats Illini Wrestling, 17-14

Isaiah Martinez defeats No. 9 Nick Wanzek

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Illinois wrestling had their two-match winning streak snapped on Sunday afternoon, as the 14th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the 12th-ranked Fighting Illini, 17-14. Minnesota won six of the ten matches, as the Gophers improve to 2-1 in the Big Ten, 5-2 overall, while the Illini drop to 2-2 in conference, and 3-3 overall.

“We made some really poor decisions and lacked fight in some matches today,” said head coach Jim Heffernan. “Disappointing to say this, but we weren’t very tough today.”

After trailing 3-0 following the opening match at 174 pounds, the Orange and Blue maintained the lead up until the eighth match of the afternoon when No. 15 Steve Bleise (Minnesota) defeated Eric Barone at 149 pounds to give Minnesota the lead. The Gophers added three more points at 157 pounds to clinch the match before Illinois’ Isaiah Martinez finished the match with a win by decision at 165 pounds.

Despite the match being decided due to Minnesota leading by six points, and having clinched the first criteria advantage with six bouts won, second-ranked Isaiah Martinez ended the match on a high note for the Illini with a victory over No. 9 Nick Wanzek. Two familiar foes, meeting last year at both NCAA Championships in March and at U.S. Last Chance Trials in May, Martinez won for the third straight time. Martinez tallied three takedowns in the match, all coming in the first period, and held Wanzek from scoring one of his own in an 8-4 decision.

With the win, the first over a ranked opponent this season, Martinez improves to 6-0 on the season. Wanzek is the first wrestler in six tries to go a full seven minutes with the three-time Big Ten champion, as Martinez had won his first five matches by either tech fall or pin. The win also moves Martinez into sole possession of 23rd place on Illinois’ all-time win list with 104 career victories.

Also getting their hand raised on Sunday inside Maturi Pavillion was No. 6 Emery Parker (184), Andre Lee (197) and Dylan Duncan (133).

The sixth-ranked 184-pounder had to battle back on Sunday after Minnesota’s Dylan Anderson scored two takedowns early in the match to put Parker in a 6-3 deficit. After an escape to cut the Anderson lead to two, 6-4, Parker took control of the match with a pair of takedowns late in the second frame to hold an 8-7 advantage entering the final two minutes. Starting on bottom in the third, Parker added six more points to his total, first with a reversal and two back points, and then his fourth takedown of the day. A riding-time point finalized the 15-9 decision, giving Parker (14-1) his ninth straight victory.

With the match tied 3-3 after Parker’s decision, the Illini got their biggest boost of the day with a a third-period injury default at 197 pounds. Behind four takedowns and two back points, Andre Lee routed Robert Steveson to a tune of 15-2 before Steveson injury defaulted with 1:14 left in the third period. The 15 points scored is the most for Lee this season.

After two straight Minnesota decisions cut the Illinois lead to 9-8, Duncan got the Illini back in the win column at 133 pounds. Paced by a takedown in both the first and second periods, Duncan built a 5-0 advantage through five minutes of action and held on for a 6-2 decision.

Leading 12-8 with four matches to go, Minnesota won the next three matches by decision, a 9-0 run by No. 11 Tommy Thorn, No. 15 Steve Bleise and No. 18 Jake Short, to enter the 165-pound bout with the victory clinched.

Despite the loss to the ranked Gopher at 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Mike Carr put up an aggressive third period that kept Minnesota from tying the match, 12-12. Trailing 8-0 to Thorn after five minutes, Carr came out hard in the third frame, surprising Thorn with a shot five seconds into the frame. Behind three takedowns in the two-minute final period, Carr denied Minnesota the bonus points, keeping the Illini in the lead.

With tempers flaring a couple times on both sides, both Minnesota and Illinois had a point deducted during the match. A point was taken from the Minnesota team score due to the bench after the 197-pound bout, while Illinois’ was assessed on Kyle Langenderfer after the 157-pound match.

The Illini will again have a full week to prepare for its next opponent, as the Orange and Blue aren’t back in action until next Sunday, January 21, when the Illini battle No. 24 Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana at 12 p.m. central time.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling gained late leads in both matches but fell to American University, 18-17, via tiebreaker criteria D and to the University of Maryland, 19-16, in a pair of dual meets to close out its home-opening weekend at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Sunday.

The Bears (0-3, 0-1 EIWA) held a 17-0 lead in their first dual of the day against the Eagles (4-3, 1-1 EIWA) who came back to tie the match at 17-17 and won on the fourth tiebreaker prior to a second dual in which the hosts claimed a 16-15 edge in an eventual setback to the Terrapins (4-8, 0-6 Big Ten).

Four Bears – senior Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), junior Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), and freshmen Bryce Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) and Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) – won twice on the day. Viruet and Rogers each earned major decision wins against American.

Next, Brown competes in its first road dual meets of the year with contests at Franklin & Marshall (Jan. 20, noon), at Bucknell (Jan. 20, 6:00 p.m.), and at Lock Haven (Jan. 21, 1:00 p.m.).

Dual 1: American 18, Brown 17 (Tiebreaker Criteria D)

Brown gained the dual’s first five bouts, including major decision wins for junior Jon Viruet and freshman Bryce Rogers, but American took the next five matches and won the dual on tiebreaker criteria D on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

In their Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association opener, the Bears earned a 17-0 lead in the team score through their five victories before the visiting Eagles claimed the match’s final five bouts to knot the team score at 17-17. American won the match, 18-17, on tiebreaker criteria D – total near fall points scored only from decisions, major decisions, and technical falls.

Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) posted his second major decision in as many matches while Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) notched his second major decision of the year. Senior Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), sophomore Zach Krause (Plainfield, Ill.), and freshman Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) each earned a win via decision.

With the meet starting at 149 pounds, Krause opened the dual with a 4-2 decision, tallying a reversal in the second period and a takedown in the third en route to the victory.

Staudenmayer pushed Brown’s team lead to 6-0 with a 3-1 decision at 157 pounds. He scored all his points after the second period with a pair of escapes and a riding time point.

At 165 pounds, Viruet extended the hosts’ edge to 10-0 with a 16-6 major decision triumph. Viruet totaled six takedowns, a reversal, an escape, and a riding time point in the win.

Rogers made the team score 14-0 behind a 14-6 major decision win at 174 pounds. With the score tied 2-2 entering the third period, Rogers tallied 12 points on three takedowns, a 4-point near fall, an escape, and a riding time point to gain his final margin.

At 184 pounds, Bastianelli picked up a 2-0 win to give Brown a 17-0 lead. He notched an escape in the second period and tacked on a point for riding time.

In the fourth tiebreaker, American took the match with an 8-4 edge in total near fall points.

GREELEY, Colo. – Duke used a fast start and a strong finish to secure a pair of victories in Colorado Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils held off a late charge from Cal State Bakersfield in a 25-17 victory and used a fantastic finish for the 19-18 triumph over host Northern Colorado.

Fifth-ranked Jacob Kasper, 11th-ranked Mitch Finesilver, Matt Finesilver and Josh Finesilver all went 2-0 on the day. It was a homecoming of sorts for the Finesilver quartet. They went 7-1 on the day as Duke picked up its first dual victories of the year.

Full recaps of both duals below.

Fast Start Propels Duke to 1st Dual Victory

GREELEY, Colo.—The Duke wrestling team used a fast start to capture its first dual victory of the season, besting Cal State Bakersfield 25-17 at Northern Colorado Sunday. The Blue Devils won six of the 10 bouts with the Finesilver brothers going 4-0 in their return home.

Duke jumped out to an 18-0 lead after just four matches thanks to a pair of falls from Brandon Leynaud at 149 pounds and Zach Finesilver at 165. The pin for Leynaud was his fourth of the year and second in the first period, while Zach needed just a couple more minutes to record his fourth fall of the year. They improve to 2-2 and 3-1 in duals with the victories.

At 157 pounds, 11th-ranked Mitch Finesilver and rookie Matt Finesilver, at 174, added decisions to make it 18-0 Blue Devils. Mitch garnered his first top 20 win, upending No. 17 Coleman Hammond by an 11-5 score. Matt used and early first-period takedown and never looked back en route to the 8-2 win in his first career dual.

The Roadrunners put six points on the scoreboard with a pin from Dom Ducharme at 184 and tacked on three more points with a narrow 5-4 decision on riding time from No. 14 Matt Williams.

Redshirt senior and fifth-ranked Jacob Kasper tacked on four more points to Duke’s total with a 10-1 major decision at heavyweight. The victory was his third bonus-point win in four duals as he pushed his season record to 22-2 and within nine victories of 100 for his career.

After Cal State Bakersfield pulled closer, 22-13, with a major decision at 125, Josh Finesilver sealed the dual with a hard-fought 8-4 decision at 133. He used a solid second period to pull away for his 15th victory of the year.

Duke makes its home debut Jan. 19 against No. 5 NC State. The dual is slated to start at 7:30 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra and can be watched at WatchESPN.com or via the ESPN app.

Blue Devils Finish Strong; Beat Northern Colorado 19-18

GREELEY, Colo. – The Blue Devils won four of the final five matches of the afternoon to come away with a thrilling 19-18 victory over host Northern Colorado in non-conference wrestling action this afternoon at Bank of Colorado Arena. Duke leaves Colorado with a 2-0 mark after defeating Cal State Bakersfield earlier in the day.

Duke, trailing 14-6 midway through the dual, received victories at 197, 285, 125 and 133 to rally to its second win of the season. The Blue Devils benefited from a crucial major decision from redshirt senior Jacob Kasper, proving to be the decisive point they needed for the win over the Bears.

Both Mitch and Matt Finesilver captured decisions at 157 and 174, respectively to keep the Blue Devils in striking distance at 10-6 after four bouts. In their homecoming the Finesilver brothers went 7-1 overall in the two duals.

With Duke down 4-0 after the opening bout at 149, Mitch put Duke on the scoreboard with an 8-2 decision as he just missed getting the major. He improves to 4-1 in duals and, while Matt notched his second dual win of the day with a 6-1 decision. Matt debuted in the starting lineup after missing the Carolina Duals to injury.

The Bears extended their lead back to eight with a major decision at 184, but the last half of the dual belonged to the Blue Devils.

Redshirt junior Alec Schenk sparked the comeback with a hard-fought 7-5 decision over Tanner Davis. Schenk was outstanding in the third period, outscoring Davis 4-1 to pick up win No. 15 of the year.

Kasper followed suit and contributed four points as he exerted his will on Robert Winters in the third period for the 12-2 win. He extends his win streak to 12 matches and pushes his record to 23-2.

After a tough match to start his day in Colorado, Thayer Atkins responded by outlasting Sean Cannon 9-5. Down early, Atkins roared into the lead and never looked back, securing his first dual victory of the year and bringing Duke within two.

Josh Finesilver completed the comeback at 133 pounds, but not without slight controversy as he held off a final effort from Rico Montoya to get the 7-6 decision. The true freshman scored a reversal at the end of the second period. to take the 6-4 lead and then was able to fight his way through a scramble down the stretch for the 7-6 triumph and 19-14 lead on the team scoreboard.

Rookie Jeremiah Reitz, wrestling a senior, did well to hold Ben Polkowske to a major decision as the Bears’ senior was in search of the technical fall for the win.

Duke makes its home debut Jan. 19 against No. 5 NC State. The dual is slated to start at 7:30 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra and can be watched at WatchESPN.com or via the ESPN app.
