LAST TIME OUT

- In their last time out, the Panthers hosted No. 25 North Dakota State and No. 18 Oklahoma Friday, Jan. 5 and Sunday, Jan. 7, respectively.

- Pitt opened the weekend with a 28-11 loss to NDSU. Senior Dom Forys (133), redshirt senior Nick Zanetta (141) and redshirt freshman Gregg Harvey (184) all recorded individual wins in the team loss.

- The Panthers bounced back Sunday as they upset No. 18 Oklahoma, 19-18, in thrilling fashion. Dom Forys (133), Nick Zanetta (141), Taleb Rahmani (157), Greggy Harvey (184) and Ryan Solomon (285) all recorded wins.

- Solomon’s pin lifted Pitt to victory as the team needed six points to push past the Sooners.

PANTHERS IN THE COACHES’ PANEL

- Five Panthers were ranked in the first round of NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings, released Jan. 19.

- 133, Dom Forys, #11

- The coaches’ rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class.

- To be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.

- Redshirt senior Ryan Solomon was named ACC Wrestler of the Week Jan. 10 after pinning his Oklahoma opponent to lift the Panthers to victory.

- Entering the final bout of the dual, Pitt was trailing the team race, 18-13, and needed a pin from Solomon to give the Panthers the win, and he did just that. The Milton, Pa., native was working with a 3-0 lead entering the second period and didn’t need much time after that as he recorded the fall in 3:51.

- The conference weekly honors is the third of Solomon’s career as he earned the honor in 2017 and 2016.

LOOKING AHEAD

- Pitt continues ACC action as the team makes the trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., Friday, Jan. 26 to take on North Carolina. The dual meet is set to get underway at 7 p.m.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

No. 14 Illini Wrestling Upends No. 24 Purdue, 21-12

Illini win six of 10 bouts against Boilers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Boosted by bonus points from redshirt freshman Dylan Duncan and redshirt senior No. 2 Isaiah Martinez, the No. 14 Fighting Illini wrestling team defeated No. 24 Purdue, 21-12, on Sunday afternoon at Holloway Gym. The victory improves Illinois’ record to 4-3 overall, 3-2 in the Big Ten, while Purdue falls to 5-5, 0-4 in conference action.

“I thought we showed some more fight this week,” said head coach Jim Heffernan following the victory. “Michael Carr had a good win, [Nate Limmex] has had a really good year. That was one of the bigger matches going into today. Duncan got us off to a good start. Emery [Parker] started a little slow, but Isaiah [Martinez] and Andre [Lee] looked good, and Kyle [Langenderfer found a way to win.”

Illinois won six of the 10 matches against the Boilermakers on Sunday, including six of the first eight to clinch the victory heading into the final two bouts at heavyweight and 125 pounds.

Winning four of the first five matches of the day to lead 15-3 at the dual’s intermission, the Illini received seven points from its redshirt freshmen Dylan Duncan and Mike Carr who combined for a total of six minutes, 27 seconds of riding time.

Duncan put Illinois on the board first with one of Illinois’ two bonus-point victories. Wrestling Devin Schroder, Duncan started fast with two takedowns in the match’s opening period to go along with 1:57 of riding time. After a reversal to start the second period, the Lombard, Illinois native tacked on two more takedowns in the third period, building his riding time to 4:30, for a 12-2 major decision.

At 141 pounds, Mike Carr continued Illinois’ ability to be tough on top, racking up 46 seconds of riding time in the first period after his opening takedown of Purdue’s Nate Limmex. After a Limmex takedown and Carr escape created a 3-3 tie, Carr regained the lead with a two-legged takedown in the second period, and then finished off the 141-pound Boilermaker in the third with his fourth takedown of the afternoon to go with 1:57 of total ride time.

After Austin Nash scored Purdue’s first team points of the dual at 149 pounds, the Illini tallied an 8-0 run by their two redshirt senior starters, Kyle Langenderfer (157) and Isaiah Martinez (165) heading into intermission.

A back-and-forth battle for Langenderfer against Cole Wysocki, the two 157-pounders traded the lead seven different times during the match. Using a pair of reversals to negate Wysocki takedowns in both the first and third periods, Langenderfer trailed by just one with under 20 seconds left in the final period. In on the right leg of Wysocki with 13 seconds remaining, Langenderfer worked his way to the match-clinching takedown with seven seconds on the clock, holding on for a 9-8 decision.

With the Illini holding a seven-point advantage through four bouts, Isaiah Martinez gave the Orange and Blue a commanding 12-point lead heading into the 10-minute break with an 18-3 technical fall of Purdue’s Jacob Morrissey. Needing just four minutes, 13 seconds to rack up the 15-point advantage, Martinez used five takedowns and eight back points to earn his fifth tech fall of the season.

Now 7-0 on the season, only one wrestler has gone the full seven minutes with the Illinois 165-pounder and are being outscored by a combined 125-41 against the two-time NCAA champion.

With the win today, Martinez moved into a four-way tie for 20th place on Illinois’ all-time wins list, joining current Illini assistant Mike Poeta and former Illini John Dergo and Kevin Puebla with 105 career wins. Next on the list is Jackson Morse (2010-15) and Jon Llewellyn (1988-91) with 106 wins.

Purdue earned its second of four decisions of the dual at 174 pounds coming out of intermission, as No. 12 Dylan Lydy won by a score of 10-3 over Illini true freshman David Riojas.

With the lead trimmed back to nine points, 15-6, No. 6 Emery Parker (184) and Andre Lee (197) clinched the dual for the Orange and Blue with a pair of decisions. Parker used three takedowns, plus Illinois’ third riding time point, en route to an 8-4 decision over Max Lyon. Andre Lee finished Purdue off with two takedowns against Kobe Woods, one in the first period and another with one minute remaining in the match following a Woods’ shot on Lee’s leg.

Purdue finished off the match with back-to-back decisions from ranked wrestlers at heavyweight and 125 pounds. No. 15 Shawn Streck defeated the Illini’s Deuce Rachal, 5-3, in the ninth match of the day, and then No. 12 Luke Welch earned a 7-5 win against No. 19 Travis Piotrowski despite a takedown and reversal for the Illini sophomore.

Illinois is now 24-4 against Purdue since Coach Heffernan joined the Illinois coaching staff prior to the 1992-93 season, including a current seven-match winning streak.

Up next, the Fighting Illini will return home where they will wrestle the first of three home duals in the season’s final four meets. The Orange and Blue are home each of the next three Sundays, beginning with Maryland on January 28 at 1 p.m.

The Huskers improve to 6-3 on the season and 4-1 in Big Ten action, as NU followed up a road win Friday night at No. 20 Northwestern. Rutgers falls to 5-4 on the year and 1-3 in Big Ten competition.

Patrick Grayson was NU's lone bonus-point winner of the day, as he won his first-career dual match with a 10-2 major decision over Razohnn Gross at heavyweight.

Rutgers won the first three matches of the day, as the first of Sunday's four matchups between ranked opponents went the way of the Scarlet Knights. U23 World Champion Richie Lewis outlasted NU's Isaiah White by a score of 2-1 in the first tiebreaker period at 165 pounds. The 12th-ranked Lewis escaped from White's control early in the 30-second session, but White, the 11th-ranked wrestler according to InterMat, could not escape as Lewis rode him out to a victory. The loss was White's first in a dual this season, as he falls to 16-3 and 7-1 in duals.

After Beau Breske dropped a 4-2 decision to Joe Grello at 174, Rutgers again emerged victorious in a matchup of ranked opponents, as No. 14 Nicholas Gravina defeated No. 7 Taylor Venz by a score of 9-3 at 184 pounds.

NU put a stop to the Rutgers momentum at the two upper weights, as Eric Schultz won a 3-2 decision over Kevin Mulligan, and Grayson earned his major decision. Grayson, a sophomore from Stafford, Va., nearly pinned Gross in the second period, as he won for the first time after earning his first varsity start on Friday night.

Rutgers took a 13-7 lead after second-ranked Nick Suriano won a 14-4 major decision over Mitchell Maginnis at 125 pounds, but that was Rutgers' only bonus-point win of the day, as well as its final win in the dual.

Renteria, a true freshman from Chicago, Ill., sparked NU's race to the finish as he racked up five takedowns on the way to a 14-11 decision over No. 17 Scott DelVecchio. Renteria improves to 3-0 on the season (all dual matches), and takes his second win over a ranked opponent after knocking off No. 19 Colin Valdiviez of Northwestern by a major decision on Friday night.

No. 12 Red won a 3-1 decision over Michael Van Brill to give him a pair of wins this weekend and run his record to 14-6 on the year. 10th-ranked McCrystal gave NU a three-point cushion at 16-13 with his 7-2 decision over No. 13 Eleazar DeLuca.

With match points tied at 47-47 heading into the 157-pound bout, Nebraska needed an outright win of any kind from Berger to seal the match, and the All-American delivered a 6-4 decision in the first sudden-victory session over No. 18 John Van Brill to clinch the win for NU. Berger controlled most of the match, but Van Brill rode out the third period and earned penalty and riding time points to send the match to overtime. In the extra session, Berger took down the Rutgers grappler just past the halfway point of the period to score the win.

Nebraska will return home to host Indiana next Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Devaney Center. The dual will mark Senior Day for Nebraska’s four seniors. Tickets are available now at Huskers.com/Tickets or by calling 1-800-8-BIG-RED.

Lee Upsets Tomasello, but Hawkeyes Fall at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Iowa wrestling team fell to No. 2 Ohio State, 22-12, on Sunday afternoon at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The fourth-ranked Hawkeyes won four of the first six matches and built a 12-7 lead, but Ohio State finished the dual with four straight wins to hand Iowa its first loss of the season and snap the Hawkeyes’ 24-match winning streak in Big Ten road duals.

Spencer Lee, a true freshman ranked No. 6 at 125, used nearly two minutes of riding time to defeat top-ranked fifth-year senior Nathan Tomasello, 3-2. After a scoreless first period, Lee opened the second on top and spent two minutes driving Tomasello into the mat to finish the period on top.

After an optional start to the third, Tomasello grabbed a brief 2-1 lead with a takedown, but Lee quickly escaped and used his one minute, 53 seconds of riding time to walk off the mat a one-point winner.

Ohio State earned wins at 133 and 141 before the Hawkeyes strung together consecutive wins at 149, 157, and 165.

Brandon Sorensen, ranked No. 2 at 149, broke a 2-2 tied in the third with a takedown 1 minute, 13 seconds into the period and held on for a 4-2 decision against No. 6 Ke-Shawn Hayes.

Michael Kemerer, ranked No. 2 at 157, never trailed in his 8-4 win. Kemerer was on the board, 2-0, six seconds into the match and finished the next 2 minutes, 54 seconds of the period on top. He doubled his lead 24 seconds into the second, and used 3 minutes, 39 seconds of riding time to finish off No. 6 Micah Jordan.

Alex Marinelli, ranked No. 11 at 165, scored takedowns in the first and third periods to defeat No. 13 Te’Shan Campbell, 4-1. Marinelli improved to 9-0 in his career, and 17-0 all-time at the Schottenstein Center. He won four Ohio high school state titles at the facility from 2013-16.

The Hawkeyes led 12-7 after six matches, but Ohio State grabbed the lead with a decision at 174 and a major decision at 184, and closed the dual with a decision at 197 and technical fall at 285.

Badgers regain momentum after defeating Spartans, 28-7

UW picks up eight out of 10 victories
EAST LANSING, Mich.- Coming off a tough loss in Ann Arbor just two days earlier, Wisconsin wrestling had a chip on its shoulder entering Sunday's dual in Jenison Field House against the Michigan State Spartans. After being down 7-6 heading into the fifth match, the Badgers earned a victory in each of the final six matches to capture a 28-7 victory.

"Reflecting on the weekend, it's clear that we have a good wrestling team," associate head coach Trevor Brandvold said. "We are tough to beat when we are getting to our leg attacks, fighting through positions and riding hard. When we are getting beat in matches, we are losing focus or turning down from positions. That can and will be fixed by the time Indiana comes into town. We are looking forward to coming home."

Eli Stickley arguably had the biggest win of the day, defeating No. 20-ranked Javier Gasca in a 6-2 decision at 141 pounds. Neither Eli nor Gasca gave any ground during the entire match, but it was a mistake by Gasca that Stickley took advantage of to get a takedown and four near-fall points to secure the victory.

Coming off of his biggest win of the year on Friday against Michigan's fifth-ranked Alec Pantaleo, Andrew Crone kept his hot streak alive, defeating Michigan State's Jake Tucker by a 7-0 decision at 157 pounds. Like Stickley, Crone was able to capitalize on an opening in Tucker's stance to get a takedown and a cradle for four near-fall points.

Evan Wick was an offensive force once again, bringing opponent Austin Hiles down five times and cradling him to get two four-point nearfalls en route to a 19-4 tech fall in the 165-pound weight class. That tech was Wick's fifth of the year and second of the weekend, as he defeated Michigan's Reece Hughes in a 19-3 victory. His additional five takedowns in the bout brought his season total up to 65, which leads all UW starters by nearly 30.

Hunter Ritter is still riding the momentum from his ranked win at Michigan, leaving East Lansing with a 6-2 decision over the Spartans' 197-pounder Nick May.

Following three-straight losses, Ryan Christensen was able to turn the tide around, picking up a last-second nail-biting 3-1 victory with a takedown on MSU's Logan Ritchie at 174 pounds.

Jens Lantz took his Spartan opponent Matt Santos to the mat five times in a 12-3 major decision victory at 133 pounds.

Not getting the result he wanted against Michigan's Dominic Abounader, Ricky Robertsontallied his 20th victory of the season at 184 pounds, defeating Michigan State's Shwan Shadaia in a 7-2 decision.

Cole Martin got his first victory of the season in the 149-pound weight class, defeating Spartan Jwan Britton by a 13-5 major decision.

The Badgers will now come home to focus on their next competition after being away from the Madison for over a month-and-a-half, hosting conference rival Indiana on Friday at 7 p.m. (CT) inside the UW Field House.

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI – The University at Buffalo wrestling team won three of the first four matches against Central Michigan, but it wasn't enough as the Bulls lost to the 17th-ranked Chippewas, 26-9, at McGuirk Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Kyle Akins led things off with a 4-0 shutout of Drew Hildebrandt at 125 to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead in the dual.

Bryan Lantry followed with a 2-1 win over Dresden Simon. Lantry's win improved the redshirt-junior to 7-3 in duals on the season.

After Jason Estevez dropped a decision at 141, Nick Palumbo earned his first career Mid-American Conference dual win with a dominant 6-3 decision over Nolan Saxton. Palumbo's win gave the Bulls a 9-3 lead.

Unfortunately, the Chippewas flexed their muscle the rest of the way, winning the final six matches to pull away for the victory.

Buffalo fell to 5-7 overall and 2-2 with the loss. The Bulls will next wrestle at Hofstra on Saturday.

Quick 1-2 punch leads Jacks past UNI
1/21/2018 | Wrestling
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Connor Brown and Seth Gross opened the dual with consecutive pins, leading 15th-ranked South Dakota State to a 22-16 victory over 11th-ranked Northern Iowa in a college wrestling dual Sunday afternoon at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits, who won their ninth dual in a row, improved to 9-2 overall and 4-0 against Big 12 Conference opponents. UNI dropped to 5-3 overall and 2-1 against league foes. SDSU ended a 21-dual losing streak to the Panthers, which began in the 1973-74 season.

A freshman from Oak Grove, Missouri, Brown trailed 6-0 late in the first period against 18th-ranked Jay Schwarm on a takedown and four-point near-fall. However, Brown was able to wriggle out of a potential pinning situation and knotted the match at 8 late in the period with a pair of reversals and four-point near-fall of his own.

Brown started the second period on the bottom, but quickly scored his third - and final - reversal of the match, putting Schwarm on his back for a pin 23 seconds into the period.

Gross, the top-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds, wasted little time to put the Jackrabbits up 12-0 in his match against Jack Wagner. Gross recorded a takedown in the opening minute, then came up with another takedown and tilt, putting Wagner's shoulders to the mat in 1:32.

UNI trimmed the deficit to 12-7 with a decision from ninth-ranked Josh Alber at 141 pounds and seventh-ranked Max Thomsen scored a 15-1 major decision at 149 pounds.

SDSU's Luke Zilverberg countered with a 15-1 major decision of his own at 157 pound and Logan Peterson pushed the Jackrabbit lead back to 12 points at 19-7 with 4-2 decision over Isaiah Patton at 165 pounds. Peterson took advantage of three penalty points for stalling against Patton to pull out the victory.

The two squads split their matches featuring ranked wrestlers on both sides. UNI's Taylor Lujan, ranked seventh at 174 pounds, upended the Jackrabbits' ninth-ranked David Kocer, 3-1, while SDSU's 11th-ranked Nate Rotert scored a 5-1 decision over 15th-ranked Jacob Holschlag. Rotert's victory sealed the dual win for SDSU and kept the senior 197-pounder undefeated in duals this season at 10-0.

UNI also received wins by decision from Drew Foster, who is ranked 10th at 184 pounds, and heavyweight Carter Isley.

UP NEXT
The Jackrabbits return to road action next Sunday (Jan. 28), traveling to Oklahoma for a Big 12 dual. Action is slated for a 2 p.m. start at McCasland Field House on the OU campus in Norman.

PITTSBURGH - A win by fall from redshirt freshman Kyle Norstrem at 125 pounds in sudden victory overtime set the tone for No. 10 Virginia Tech’s convincing 31-6 victory over P! itt on Sunday afternoon.

The Hokies (9-2) won eight of the 10 bouts with four bonus point wins. The victory over the Panthers was Tech’s 16th consecutive ACC dual meet win, a streak that started in 2015.

Norstrem’s bout saw two challenges and both calls reversed that led to a 1-1 score at the end of three periods. Norstrem got Bentley on his back and secured the pin on a throw.

After Pitt picked up a 4-1 decision at 133, Brent Moore got the Hokies back on track with a 2-0 upset over No. 15 Nick Zanetta. Moore escaped in the second period after starting on bottom to take a 1-0 lead and was able to ride Zanetta the whole third period to pick up the riding time point.

Solomon Chishko returned for his first match since Nov. 25 against Missouri and scored a 3-1 decision over Robert Lee. After wins from B.C. LaPrade and David McFadden, Hunter Bolen put the match out of reach with an 18-3 tech fall in 4:57 for the Hokies’ second of four bonus point wins.

Tech returns to Cassell Coliseum on Friday, Jan. 26 when they take on No. 7 Lehigh at 7 p.m. Duke will then travel to Blacksburg to face the Hokies for a 1 p.m. dual on Saturday, Jan. 27.

BROOKINGS, S.D. –
UNI wrestling won a key top-10 matchup at 174 pounds, but the Panthers fell to South Dakota State, 22-16.

No. 11 UNI falls to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12. No. 15 South Dakota State improves to 9-2 and 4-0 in the Big 12.

The Panthers fell behind early losing the first two matches by fall before No. 7 Josh Alber narrowed the team score with a 9-2 decision over Henry Pohlmeyer at 141 pounds. Alber is on a seven-match win streak for UNI.

At 149 pounds, No. 7 Max Thomsen was the only Panther to earn bonus points. A late escape had Thomsen settling for a 15-1 major decision instead of a tech fall over Colten Carlson. Thomsen led the team in takedowns with three.

South Dakota State would take the next two matches before momentum started to swing in favor of the Panthers.

Taylor Lujan fought off the attacks of No. 9 David Kocer to win 3-1 at 174 pounds. The decision gives Lujan five wins over top-20 opponents. Earlier this year, he beat No. 6 Brandon Womack of Cornell, No. 9 Jadaen Bernstein of Navy, No. 12 Keaton Subjeck of Stanford and No. 18 Forrest Przbysz of Appalachian State. Lujan leads the team with dual points with 29.

Foster gave UNI back-to-back wins with a decision at 184 pounds. Trailing 3-2 to start the third period, Foster went on the attack in the third period with an escape, takedown and nearfall points. His riding time closed the 8-4 win over No. 23 Martin Mueller.

“It’s definitely important to keep the offense going and get the energy back in our favor,” Foster said. “I personally need to do a better job at getting more attacks and being more offensive. The result isn’t what we wanted but it’s not a dual that we will let define us.”

Three-time NCAA qualifier No. 9 Nate Rotert sealed SDSU’s team win with a 5-1 decision at 197 pounds.

Heavyweight Carter Isley improved to 4-4 in duals with a 3-1 decision over Alex Macki. Isley has won four of his last five duals. His last dual loss was to No. 4 Tanner Hall of Arizona State.

Alber, Thomsen, Lujan and Foster remain undefeated in Big 12 duals.

UNI continues to lead the series that dates back to 1954. The Panthers are now 38-4-1 against the Jackrabbits. It was head coach Doug Schwab’s first loss to South Dakota State, now 4-1.

UP NEXT - UNI will face No. 5 Oklahoma State on the road Feb. 3.

"We have a big one coming up in a couple of weeks that we aren’t supposed to win on paper, but I’m confident in this team and the output that’s coming," Foster said. "These are the guys I’m going to war with and there are more back in Cedar Falls. We continue to trust the process.”

Tickets for Jan. 28 against Northwestern

The University of Minnesota wrestling team suffered their first home loss of the 2017-18 season against No. 8 Michigan on Sunday afternoon.

The Gophers picked up two victories during the dual. No. 10 Nick Wanzek defeated No. 5 Logan Massa by decision at 165 and then No. 10 Tommy Thorn picked up a victory at 141.

“Losing the close one’s can be a little frustrating,” head coach Brandon Eggum said after the dual. “We had opportunities today and couldn’t come up big in some close matches that we feel we could of won today. We know losing this dual isn’t what we wanted, but we know when March comes around we will be using these moments to become better.”

The dual began at 149 pounds, where Steve Bleise took on Malik Amine. Amine escaped, and Bleise earned a point on an illegal hold, putting the score at 1-1 heading into the final period. Amine was able to turn Bleise, and earned a four point near fall, and a late takedown for Bleise had the match end 6-4 in favor of Amine.

A top-20 matchup was in place at 157-pounds when Jake Short took on No. 5 Alec Pantaleo. Pantaleo used a first period takedown to take an early 2-1 lead. In the second, Short nearly had a pin in place on Pantaleo, and a challenge came from Eggum, but the call stood, and Pantaleo went on to take Short down a second time and secure the 5-2 decision.

Nick Wanzek continued his best career start when he took the mat at 165-pounds. The top-10 matchup started with Massa applying most of the offensive pressure, which gave him a 6-2 lead after one period. Wanzek responded with a reversal to open the second period, and turned it into a four point near fall, giving him a 8-7 lead after Massa eventually got to his feet.

Wanzek wouldn’t relax with the lead, the senior took down Massa for the first time in the match and extended his lead to 10-7 in the second period. Massa escaped to begin the third period, and looked to tie the match up, but Wanzek used the aggressiveness from Massa to his advantage, earning another takedown and putting his lead to 12-8, and a stall call made it 13-8.

Wanzek was close to a two-point near fall as time expired, but after further review, it was determined there was not enough time remaining to give Wanzek another major decision, and he settled for a 14-8 decision.

“Big win for Wanzek today,” Eggum said. “I could just tell he was exciting and looking forward to it. He has been wrestling really well, but I also think he is in a really great spot mentally. He fights hard, and when you do that, good things will happen.”

“I’d say my game plan worked pretty well today,” Wanzek said after the dual. “I gave up some first period takedowns, but I knew if I could keep it close in the third period, he was going to break and I was going to start to get my stuff.”
Chris Pfarr and Dylan Anderson each dropped matches at 174 and 184, giving Michigan a 15-3 lead after five matches.

At 197, Brandon Krone took the mat, giving up nearly 15-pounds to Minnesota native, Jackson Striggow. Krone would hang with the heavier Striggow. Krone was taken down twice in the first period, but was able to get on top and forced a stall call on Striggow, making it 4-2 in the third. Krone rode out Striggow for the remaining two periods, but was unable to score on a turn, ultimately falling 4-3.

Rylee Streifel then faced No. 2 Adam Coon at heavyweight, and wrestled hard for seven minutes, but couldn’t secure a takedown, falling by decision, 7-2.

At 125-pounds, Ethan Lizak held a lead after a second stalling call in the second period on No. 13 Drew Mattin. Lizak wasn’t able to secure a turn on Mattin, and the two were at their feet in the third. Mattin was able to secure a takedown with just seconds left in the match, and forced sudden victory.

In sudden victory, the two went scoreless in the first period, and then a reversal put Mattin up 4-2. Lizak would get back on top in the final extra period, but couldn’t score and fell 4-2.

After a pin for Michigan at 133-pounds, No. 10 Tommy Thorn took the mat at 141-pounds for the Golden Gophers. The All-American started the match with high pace, scoring the first takedown within the first 15 seconds. Thorn obtained a 6-1 advantage after a near fall, and then went up 9-1 after an escape and takedown. Thorn went on to finish off the major decision, 12-4, wrapping up the dual on a positive note for the Gophers.

The Gophers will shift their focus to the road this next Friday with No. 1 Penn State on Jan. 26 at 7:00 p.m. Minnesota will return home on Jan. 28 to take on Northwestern at Maturi Pavilion to wrap up their home schedule and honor the seniors.

Huskers Use Late Rally to Take Down Rutgers

Lincoln - Nebraska won each of the last four bouts by decision Sunday to complete a weekend sweep, as the 18th-ranked Huskers rallied to knock off No. 16 Rutgers by a score of 19-13 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, extending the NU win streak to four duals in a row.

The Huskers trailed in the dual 13-7 with just four bouts to go, but consecutive decisions by Jason Renteria (133), Chad Red Jr. (141), Colton McCrystal (149) and Tyler Berger (157) sealed the win for Nebraska. The Huskers improve to 6-3 on the season and 4-1 in Big Ten action, as NU followed up a road win Friday night at Northwestern.

Duke Wins Thriller over Navy on Criteria

http://goduke.us/2F0SoWY

January 21, 2018

DURHAM, N.C.—Duke redshirt senior Jacob Kasper put his Navy opponent on his back with 30 seconds left in the final period of the final match of the day to lead the Duke wrestling team to a heart-stopping victory over Navy in Cameron Indoor Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils and Midshipmen finished tied 22-22, but Duke’s two falls were the difference in the criteria tiebreak.

In nearly identical fashion to the 2017 match in Annapolis, the dual came down to Kasper at heavyweight and Duke emerged victorious this time on its home mat. Both Kasper and senior Thayer Atkins earned falls and Navy managed just one, giving the Blue Devils the win on criteria B. It was the first win for Duke over Navy since 1928.

“We knew it was going to be a tight match and they got us last year,” said head coach Glen Lanham. “Our guys wrestled tough, tough enough to win that one. In some spots we have to make some improvements, but overall I’m satisfied because to lose how we did to them last year and to come back and win in the same fashion is big for the program.”

Kasper walked out onto the mat determined to get the fall. The nation’s fifth-ranked heavyweight scored early and started working immediately to turn Austin Faunce on his back. The Navy senior battled tough, knowing he couldn’t give up the pin, as the pair headed into the final two minutes of wrestling.

Starting in the neutral position, Kasper quickly scored the takedown and nearfall points and with time ticking away and the Blue Devils fans on the edge of their seats, Kasper exerted his will on Faunce and got the fall and the Duke team victory.

“I don’t know if [Kasper] saw the worry on my face, but he told me ‘relax Coach, I’m going to get the fall’,” Lanham said. “I believe it, but seeing it is believing it. Everybody is going to give him their best match and he wrestled within his ability and got the fall for us. He’s a true leader for us.”

The Blue Devils and Midshipmen both posted five wins apiece in the dual as Duke grabbed wins at 125, 133, 157, 174 and 285. The team score see-sawed with the Blue Devils getting out of the gates quick 9-0 and Navy responding with three straight wins for a 10-9 advantage.

Mitch Finesilver, ranked 11th nationally, put Duke up 13-10 at the intermission with a crucial major decision over Zack Davis. It was his eighth major decision of the year and win No. 19 for the redshirt junior.

Coming out of the break, Navy won three of the next four bouts for its largest lead of the afternoon 22-16 to set up the thrilling finish by Kasper.

Atkins started the dual strong for the Blue Devils, pinning Aslan Kilic in the third period to give Duke the 6-0 lead. Trailing 2-0 to start the third, Navy’s Kilic escaped to cut the lead in half, but Atkins went right after the Midshipman rookie and put him on his back for the fall. It was his first pin of the year and pushed his overall record to 9-10 on the year.

Rookie Josh Finesilver tacked on three more points for the Blue Devils with a gutsy performance at 133 pounds. Josh and Cody Trybus were knotted 2-2 after five minutes of wrestling, but it was Josh’s two minutes of riding time that proved to be the difference in the end. Trybus was aggressive in the third, scoring a takedown, but Josh was able to hold him off in the final 30 seconds for his 17th win of the year.

The Midshipmen registered consecutive technical falls at 141 and 149 to grab their first lead of the afternoon, 10-9, before Mitch swung momentum back in Duke’s favor with a major decision at 157.

The Blue Devils and Midshipmen traded decisions at 165 and 174 with Matt Finesilver picking up the win for Duke in a hard-fought 3-2 decision at 174. Zach Finesilver lost in similar fashion, 3-2.

Matt used strong hand fighting and defense in the final minute to garner his 17th win of the year and second of the weekend. His takedown late in the second period proved to be the different after AJ Alford was unable to score in the third stanza.

The Blue Devils hit the road next to take on No. 10 Virginia Tech. The match is Jan. 27 with a 1 p.m., start in Blacksburg.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Looking for momentum heading into next weekend’s All-Academy Championships, the VMI wrestling team fell to Sacred Heart, 27-13, in a neutral matchup before falling to host Bloomsburg by a 39-12 score Sunday in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

Facing Sacred Heart in an early 10 a.m. matchup, the Keydets kept pace with the Pioneers for most of the dual, jumping ahead in the first bout (141 lbs.) and later regaining the lead, 13-12, when Max Gallahan earned a 6-3 decision over SHU’s Mark Boyle at 197 pounds with just three bouts left. Sacred Heart claimed two of the final three bouts by fall and another by decision to tack on 15 points and make the score appear more lopsided than the actual flow of the match.

Senior Michael Hulcher opened the match with a dominating 18-5 major decision over SHU’s Shaun Williams for the quick 4-0 team lead. After dropping the next two bouts, junior Blake Hohman picked up a 6-2 decision over Chris Zaccaria to trim the team deficit to 9-7 for the Pioneers. Sophomore Chris Beck logged a hard fought 5-3 decision over Sacred Heart’s Joe Toci at 184 pounds to give VMI momentum heading into Gallahan’s match.

Bloomsburg 39, VMI 12

With the dual again starting at the 141-pound weight class, the Keydets struggled from the start in their noon matchup against the host Huskies as Bloomsburg took the first three bouts for a quick 15-0 advantage. VMI took a forfeit at 149 pounds and VMI’s Steven Midkiff was pinned at 157 pounds by Husky Kevin Laubach for 12 of the 15 Bloomsburg points.

Hohman provided a boost for the Keydets with his second victory of the day by pinning Bloomsburg’s Nate Newberry in 4:11 to cut the VMI deficit to 15-6. The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Huskies were victors in the following four bouts as the Husky lead skyrocketed to 33-6 with only two bouts remaining.

The final six VMI points came by way of a Bloomsburg forfeit at 125 pounds. VMI’s Jacob Mills was then pinned in the final Keydet bout of the day as the Huskies took the 39-12 victory.

VMI returns to league action Thursday night on the road at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, which also serves as the host of this year’s All-Academy Championships slated for all day Saturday.

Michigan Rallies Past Iowa for 19-17 Win

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa wrestling team fell to No. 7 Michigan, 19-17, on Saturday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The fourth-ranked Hawkeyes won four of the dual’s first six matches, but the Wolverines won the final four to erase a 17-7 deficit and snap Iowa’s streak of nine straight wins in the series.

The Hawkeyes got wins from Spencer Lee, Vince Turk, Brandon Sorensen, and Alex Marinelli.

Lee opened the dual with a 15-0 technical fall at 125, and Sorensen recorded his fifth pin of the season at 149. He led 8-3 before securing the fall with six seconds left in the second period.

Lee won for the third straight time against a top 10 opponent. He turned a first-period takedown into three tilts and 12 nearfall points, and ended No. 9 Drew Mattin’s night with an escape to open the second.

Turk and Marinelli both won by decision. Turk worked overtime to earn his first Big Ten dual win, 13-11, at 141. Turk and Sal Profaci shared seven takedowns through the first seven minutes, but Turk got the eighth and decisive takedown 33 seconds into the first sudden-victory period.

Marinelli picked up his third win over a top 10 opponent. He scored a takedown nine seconds into the match and used a third-period escape to top No. 8 Logan Massa, 3-2, at 165.

Marinelli’s win gave Iowa a 17-7 lead in the team score, but Michigan won the final four matches by a combined seven points to end the dual on a 12-0 run.

Utah Valley takes down Oklahoma, 19-18, by criteria
2/2/2018 | Wrestling
OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University wrestling team won six of the 10 bouts en route to defeating Big 12 power Oklahoma for the first time in program history by criteria, 19-18, on Friday evening at Lockhart Arena.

With OU (7-8, 3-4 Big 12) holding to an 18-15 lead entering the final match, UVU 141-pound redshirt freshman Matt Findlay pulled out a 12-10 overtime victory over No. 26 Mike Longo to deadlock the team score at 18-18. The dual then headed to criteria, and Utah Valley (8-3, 4-1 Big 12) held the tiebreaker thanks to winning six individual matches on the night.

"I'm really pleased with how the guys wrestled. I told the team that if they went out and fought, we would win this match because we know that we are good enough," head UVU coach Greg Williams said. "Despite having Taylor LaMont out of the lineup tonight, I'm not surprised with how we wrestled. It was just a wonderful outcome and I'm thrilled for our team, our coaching staff and our fans."

Trailing 9-0 after two matches, 16th-ranked sophomore Demetrius Romero got the Wolverines going with a hard fought 3-2 come-from-behind decision over #24 Dewaylon Barnes to jumpstart a five-match winning streak for Utah Valley. Sophomore Kimball Bastian then immediately followed with a 2-1 upset victory over 10th-ranked Yoanse Mejias, 184-pound redshirt freshman Gary Jantzer picked up a 9-6 win of his own over OU's Matthew Waddell, sophomore 197-pounder Tanner Orndorff continued UVU's winning ways with a 6-2 decision over #32 Andrew Dixon, and 26th-ranked senior heavyweight Dustin Dennison capped the spurt with a 2-1 decision over Connor Webb to give Utah Valley a 15-9 lead on the team score.

With Romero trailing 1-0 entering the final stanza, the Wolverine 165-pounder got things going with an escape and followed things up with the decisive takedown to hold on to the 3-2 win over the fellow ranked foe and improve to 23-4 overall and a perfect 11-0 in duals on the year. Bastian (12-7, 5-2 overall) then followed with the upset of the night by recording the 2-1 victory over the 10th-ranked Sooner and 2017 NCAA qualifier Mejias. After being granted a penalty point in the first and an escape in the second, Bastian held a 2-1 lead over Mejias with time winding down in the final period. Mejias then looked to have scored the go-ahead takedown with mere seconds remaining, but after review, the official erased the takedown off the board and Bastian held on for the big upset.

Jantzer (18-10, 7-3 duals) then continued the Wolverine spurt with a 9-6 win of his own over Waddell. The UVU 184-pounder recorded three takedowns, two escapes and an additional riding time point en route to earning the 9-6 decision. Orndorff (17-10, 7-4 duals) then had a strong final two periods against Oklahoma's Dixon to score the 6-2 win over the OU senior. Trailing 2-1 in the second, the UVU 2017 NCAA qualifier Orndorff scored an escape to even the score and followed that up with a two-point nearfall, a stall point and a riding time point to beat Dixon, 6-2. The 26th-ranked and fellow 2017 NCAA qualifier Dennison (25-7, 7-2 duals) then capped UVU's spurt by holing on to a 2-1 win over Oklahoma's Webb. Dennison scored an escape and a stall point on his way to earing his career-best 25th victory of the season.

With sixth-ranked Wolverine Taylor LaMont out of the lineup on the night due to an injury, 16th-ranked Sooner Christian Moody (125 pounds) then put an end to UVU's streak with a second-period fall over junior Josh Jensen to tie the team score at 15-15. OU's Jake Rubio then followed with a tightly contested 2-0 victory over Durbin Lloren at 133 pounds to give the Sooners an 18-15 lead heading into the final match.

Facing a must-win challenge against No. 26 Longo, UVU's Findlay (8-5, 4-1 Big 12) didn't disappoint the home crowd by knocking off Longo in overtime to seal the win for the Wolverines. With Findlay and Longo seemingly matching one another move-for-move, the Wolverine redshirt freshman managed to score six points in the final two periods to tie the bout at 10-10 and send the contest into overtime. Findlay then didn't ease up, as he scored the match-sealing takedown in the first sudden-victory period to take the bout by a score of 12-10 over the three-time NCAA qualifier Longo.

As a whole, the Wolverines defeated a total of four ranked opponents in the contest. Oklahoma is also currently receiving votes for the USA Today/NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll.

With the win, Utah Valley remains in third place in the Big 12 standings with a 4-1 league record. UVU only trails No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 12 South Dakota State, who are both tied for first with identical unblemished 5-0 Big 12 records.

The contest marked UVU's first home dual against a core Big 12 Conference member since joining the league as an affiliate nearly three years ago, and its second win of the year over a core Big 12 foe after previously defeating West Virginia earlier in the season.

"I don't think you can ask for a anything better than to have your crowd come into a big match like we did tonight. It really came down to the wire and our guys could feel that energy," Williams added when asked about the home crowd of 1,488 fans. "It meant a lot and it was great."

The Wolverines will now hit the road for their final road trip of the regular season next week, as they'll head to the Front Range to face No. 22 Wyoming in Laramie on Feb. 9 and Air Force in Colorado Springs on Feb. 10. Both contests will begin at 7 p.m. MT and will be streamed live on FloWrestling.org. Following the trip, UVU will return home for its final dual of the season when it welcomes Northern Colorado to town on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.

No. 19 Rutgers Wrestling Secures 22-13 Win at No. 17 Northwestern

Scarlet Knights defeat six Wildcats for Friday night victory in Evanston, Illinois

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 1 Nick Suriano (125) secured a win over a top-10 opponent, No. 17 John Van Brill (157) contributed to the pin pool and No. 11 Richie Lewis (165) won by major decision as No. 19 Rutgers (6-5, 2-4) delivered a 22-13 victory over No. 17 Northwestern (8-3, 3-3) Friday night at Patten Gymnasium in Evanston, Illinois.

The Scarlet Knights produced wins in six bouts during their dual with the Wildcats, as No. 20 Scott DelVecchio (133), Michael Van Brill (141) and No. 12 Nicholas Gravina (184) also contributed individual victories. The win marked the second in Big Ten Conference action during 2017-18 and was the third ranked dual victory for RU this season.

“Anytime you get a win in the Big Ten on the road against a nationally-ranked program, it’s big,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “I thought we wrestled hard again. We backed up our Penn State effort with another really good effort and we won a lot of close matches, which is important.”

Suriano faced No. 10 Sebastian Rivera.to start the dual, a rematch from when they both squared off at the Midlands Championships back in December. Suriano collected a takedown in the first period, escaped in the third and added the riding time point for the 4-1 decision over Rivera.

The win moved Suriano to 20-0 on the season, as the Bergen Catholic product now owns a perfect 11-0 mark in dual action with victories over five ranked opponents. Suriano defeated Rivera, 7-6, in the semifinal bout at Midlands in their first meeting.

Decisions from DelVecchio and Michael Van Brill followed, as Rutgers sprinted out to a 9-0 lead on the Wildcats.

DelVecchio trailed Colin Valdiviez, 4-3, after two periods, but landed a takedown with 1:40 left in the match to regain a 5-4 lead. Another takedown followed in the closing seconds of the match, as DelVecchio left Patten Gym with an 8-4 decision.

Michael Van Brill also muscled a win for the Scarlet Knights, courtesy of his 5-1 decision over Alec McKenna. Van Brill earned a takedown in the first period, rode McKenna out in period two and added an escape and takedown in the final two minutes for the result.

After a 9-3 loss from No. 12 Eleazar DeLuca (149) to No. 5 Ryan Deakin put Northwestern on the team scoreboard, John Van Brill followed with an exclamation mark. The Mullica Hill, New Jersey, native got Shayne Oster on his back for the fall at 2:43, his fourth pin of the season and second in dual action.

After five bouts, Rutgers led Northwestern, 15-3.

Lewis continued the momentum for the Scarlet Knights, outworking Michael Sepke for the 10-2 major decision. Up 7-2 with 17 seconds left in the match, Lewis delivered his fourth takedown of the night by almost driving Sepke into the scorer’s table. The riding time point gave Lewis his fifth major of the season and put Rutgers ahead, 19-3

A close loss by Joseph Grello (174) to No. 17 Johnny Sebastian made it 19-6. Gravina followed with another gritty performance, this time against former NCAA qualifier Mitch Sliga. An escape by Gravina was the only difference after two periods, but Gravina earned the riding time point while Sliga was hit with a caution. Gravina would win the bout, 3-0, and secure the dual match for Rutgers.

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Sunday (Feb. 4), when they compete at No. 14 Illinois for a 2 p.m. dual on BTN2Go.

Knight Notes

• The win marked the third over a ranked foe this season. Rutgers has defeated No. 17 Northwestern, then-No. 19 Oklahoma (Nov. 11), then-No. 24 North Carolina (Jan. 12) in 2017-18.

• Rutgers moved to 3-0 all-time against the Wildcats.

• Goodale now owns 159 wins for his career, passing Deane Oliver for second most in program history. Goodale needs just eight more victories to surpass John Sacchi for the all-time mark at Rutgers. Sacchi owns 166 career wins.

• Surinao is now 5-0 against ranked Intermat foes this season, outscoring them 27-9 in those matches.

• Lewis has now captured victories in seven of his last eight outings, which includes ranked victories over then-No. 11 Isaiah White (Nebraska), then-No. 11 Te’shan Campbell (Ohio State) and then-no. 13 Anthony Valenica (Arizona State).

• This was the third dual that both John and Michael Van Brill delivered wins. They also both had victories in duals against Oklahoma and Hofstra this season.

Willie Scott made his 2017-18 dual debut, competing at 197 pounds.

Panthers Fall to No. 6 Wolfpack

Bruce, Bentley and Forys Earn Individual Victories in Pitt’s Loss to NC State

Gavin Postmatch

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team fell to No. 6 NC State in ACC action, 23-9, Friday night at the Fitzgerald Field House.

With the loss, the Panthers drop to 2-9 overall and 0-3 against ACC foes, while the Wolfpack improve to 13-1 overall and 3-0 in conference competition.

Redshirt junior Zach Bruce (197), junior LJ Bentley (125) and senior Dom Forys (133) were Pitt’s lone wins on the day.

NC State ripped off five consecutive wins to start the night, taking a commanding 17-0 lead as the dual got started at 149 pounds.

The Panthers got on the board at 197 pounds after Bruce picked up a 5-0 decision over Tyler Johnson. Bruce earned all five points in the third period after Johnson was hit with stalling twice, Bruce then added a reversal and tacked on one more point with riding time.

The Wolfpack led 17-3 entering the heavyweight bout as redshirt senior Ryan Solomon dropped a 5-3 to Michael Boykin.

Pitt responded at 125 pounds as Bentley picked up a 3-1 victory over Tommy Cox. Bentley entered the third period with a 3-1 lead, however Cox tied the match after a reversal. Bentley escaped to take the lead and secure the win to bring the team score to 20-6 in favor of the Wolfpack.

The Panthers captured its third and final win of the dual at 133 pounds as Forys won in a 7-5 decision over No. 13 Tariq Wilson. Forys fell behind 4-3 after the first period but quickly took the lead in the second after an escape off bottom and a takedown. Entering the third, Forys led 6-4 but let Wilson escape to bring the score to 6-5, however it wouldn’t be enough as Forys added another point with riding time en route to the decision.

The Wolfpack finished off their day with a win at 141 pounds, as Jamel Morris won in a 12-8 decision over No. 19 redshirt senior Nick Zanetta, giving NC State the 23-9 victory over the Panthers.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Cleveland State University wrestling team came up short at host Bloomsburg Friday evening, 23-15, in Eastern Wrestling League action in Nelson Field House.

Four Vikings notched wins Friday, including junior Evan Cheek winning by fall.

Redshirt freshman Ryan Ford got the Vikings started off on the right foot at 149 pounds. He came out two points ahead after a high-scoring first period that saw 14 total points scored. Ford maintained that two-point advantage after five more minutes and claimed a 12-10 win.

After dropping a match via decision at 157 pounds, the Vikings looked poised to retake the lead, holding a three-point edge after two periods at 165. However, the hosts rallied to claim the victory.

Redshirt senior Gabe Stark rallied from a deficit after two periods to force a sudden-victory session at 174 pounds. However, he came up short in the extra frame, dropping the bout via decision.

Redshirt senior Nick Corba has yet to allow a point in EWL action, and that trend continued Friday. Corba posted a 2-0 win over Trevor Allard at 184, who had entered with a 22-8 record on the campaign.

True freshman John Kelbly then notched his first-career EWL win with a 5-3 decision at 197, pulling the Vikings within three points on the team scoreboard.

However, that was a close as CSU would get. The hosts won the following three matches to clinch the team victory.

Cheek ended the night with a bright spot for the Vikings, opening up a 12-2 lead after the first period before winning by fall within 30 seconds of the start of the second period.

Cheek, who won his third straight EWL match, is now 13-6 at 141 pounds with 10 bonus-point wins, including four pins.

Corba now owns a team-leading 22 wins this season and is 9-1 in dual action.

Kelbly's first EWL win moved his season win total into double digits in his rookie campaign.

Cleveland State will be right back in action as it has its EWL road finale Saturday at nationally ranked Lock Haven.

Late surge pushes Jackrabbits past Pitt
2/9/2018 | Wrestling
PITTSBURGH - In a dual that went down to the wire, the South Dakota State University wrestling team extended its dual winning streak to a school-record-tying 12 matches with a 25-13 win at Pittsburgh Friday night.

The 12th-ranked Jackrabbits, who were propelled to the win by four bonus-point victories, improved to 12-2 overall. Pitt dropped to 2-10 in duals this season.

Luke Zilverberg, ranked 14th at 157 pounds, scored the first SDSU victory of the night with a 10-2 major decision over Taleb Rahmani. It was Zilverberg's team-leading 22nd victory of the season.

After the Panthers grabbed a 7-4 lead, SDSU took the lead for good by winning the next three matches to go ahead 14-7. David Kocer, the 12th-ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, started the streak with a 15-3 major decision over Tommy O'Brien for his 99th career victory. Martin Mueller at 184 pounds and 11th-ranked Nate Rotert at 197 pounds each won by decision.

Pitt pulled to within a point at 14-13 with two bouts to go as heavyweight Ryan Solomon and 125-pounder L.J. Bentley each won by decision.

However, SDSU put an emphatic stop to the Panthers' upset bid. What figured to be a marquee matchup between top-ranked Seth Gross and 10th-ranked Dom Forys of Pittsburgh never materialized as Gross lived up to his top billing by recording a takedown and trio of four-point near-falls in the first period for a 14-0 lead. Gross finished off his 16-0 technical fall victory with a takedown 20 seconds into the second period after a neutral start.

Needing only to avoid being pinned to win the dual, Henry Pohlmeyer trailed 1-0 entering the third period against the Panthers' Nick Zanetta. Pohlmeyer, who rode out the entire second period from the top position, escaped early in the third period, took Zanetta down and put him to his back for a pin 35 seconds into the final stanza to seal the Jackrabbit victory.

UP NEXT
The Jackrabbits will go for a program-record 13th consecutive dual victory Sunday afternoon at Big 12 Conference rival West Virginia. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Central) at WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

Colton McCrystal pinned Jake Barry in 41 seconds to help Nebraska close the dual season with a win over Stanford on Friday.
Stanford, Calif. - Colton McCrystal (149) and Isaiah White (165) won bonus points for Nebraska in two of the first three matches, and the 14th-ranked Cornhuskers held off a late Stanford rally to win a 23-14 decision Friday at Maples Pavilion.

Nebraska closes the dual season with a record of 10-4, as the Huskers, winners of eight of nine duals, reach double-digit wins in duals for the eighth-consecutive season and the 16th time in 18 seasons under Head Coach Mark Manning. Stanford falls to 7-5 on the year.

Ninth-ranked McCrystal got the Huskers started with a pin in less than a minute, as he put Jake Barry on his back in 41 seconds for his quickest pin of the season. McCrystal improves to 17-3 overall and 10-2 in duals, as he earned his 30th-career win in dual meets on Saturday night.

Tyler Berger continued the Husker momentum, as he rebounded from an early deficit for a 3-2 decision over All-American Paul Fox, aided by a second-period rideout. The 11th-ranked Berger has won eight of his last 10 duals and is 18-6 on the year and 9-4 in duals

White found bonus points for the Big Red at 165 pounds, as he racked up seven takedowns and a pair of nearfalls to cruise to a 21-5 technical fall over Jared Hill in just 3:17. White, ranked 10th by InterMat, has now accumulated 44 takedowns in dual meets, and has been taken down just twice as he improves to 11-2 in duals and 20-4 overall.

Seventh-ranked Taylor Venz also joined the 20-win club on Friday, as he was tough on top in the third period to seal a 7-3 decision over Austin Flores. Venz scored a pair of takedowns and a reversal in the bout, and is now 20-5 on the year and 10-4 in duals.

With Nebraska leading 17-5 at halftime, Eric Schultz picked up right where the Huskers left off, as the redshirt freshman won a 9-4 decision over Cole DePasquale to improve to 15-7 on the season and 10-4 in duals.

Heading into the final bout of the night, NU clung to a 20-14 lead, but Chad Red Jr. stamped out Stanford's glimmer of hope with a 7-2 decision over Isaiah Locsin to clinch the dual for Nebraska.

Stanford's two ranked wrestlers picked up wins Saturday, as ninth-ranked Keaton Subjeck won an 18-3 technical fall over Eric Engler at 174 pounds, and eighth-ranked Nathan Butler defeated David Jensen by a 7-3 decision.

The Cardinal won back-to-back bouts at 125 and 133 before Red clinched the dual. At 125 pounds, Stanford's Gabriel Townsell won a 10-4 decision over Mitchell Maginnis, while Mason Pengilly scored a takedown and a four-point nearfall in the first sudden-victory period for a 7-1 win over No. 19 Jason Renteria.

Nebraska will have a week off from competition before the 2018 Big Ten Championships, held March 3-4 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich. Tickets for the championships are available at MSUSpartans.com.

Full Results

MADISON, Wis.-
On a day to celebrate the collegiate careers of seven young men, No. 18 Wisconsin wrestling (7-5, 4-5 Big Ten) was in the UW Field House one last time, falling to Purdue (9-7, 3-6), 25-15 in the regular season finale.

"It's not over yet," Head Coach Barry Davis said about the regular season coming to a close. "Even though today was the last regular season dual, we still have Big Tens and the NCAA's yet. For the guys, we have to step it up, turn it up a notch and give that final push into the postseason. We'll make adjustments and make sure when the conference championships come around in just a couple weeks, our guys will win those close decisions."

Evan Wick got back into the win column, tallying a fall against NCAA qualifier Jacob Morrissey in just 1:07. The freshman was able to take down his opponent before locking in a cradle to get both of Morrissey's shoulders on the mat.

In his final competition in the UW Field House, senior Ricky Robertson shined, got back on track by tallying five takedowns and a reversal in a 13-5 major decision over Purdue's Max Lyon.
The other source of team points came from Sophomore Cole Martin, who was on an offensive frenzy. Martin took down Purdue's Austin Nash twice. In addition, Martin got two, two-point near-falls and a four-point near fall in a seven minute, 15-0 tech fall.

The Badgers will now have two weeks to rest up and prepare as tournament season nears. The Big Ten Championships will take place in East Lansing, Michigan on March 3 and 4, with the NCAA Championships occurring just two weeks later in Cleveland, Ohio from March 15-17.

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – Penn State proved why it's the best wrestling program in the country as the top-ranked Nittany Lions shut out Buffalo, 55-0, at Rec Hall on Sunday afternoon. The loss capped one of Buffalo's most difficult schedules in recent memory as Penn State was the fifth nationally-ranked program the Bulls faced this season.

It was a raucous scene as a sell-out crowd of 6,431 fans packed Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions rolled out six top-ten nationally-ranked wrestlers, four of which ranked in the top three. Penn State dominated the dual, winning seven of the 10 matches by pin to improve to a perfect 14-0 on the season.

Buffalo finished the regular season with a dual record of 5-12. The Bulls will next begin their preparation for the Mid-American Conference Championships which begin on March 3 at Central Michigan. Redshirt-junior Jake Gunning will look to repeat as MAC champion at 285 lbs. and Bryan Lantry, ranked 15th in the nation, is pursuing his first MAC title.

No. 21 Rutgers Wrestling Closes Dual Season with Dominate 28-7 Win over In-State Rival Princeton

Scarlet Knights collect eight wins en route during Sunday afternoon action inside Jadwin Gym

PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 12 Nicholas Gravina (184) joined the pin pool, John Van Brill (157) collected his second ranked victory of the weekend and No. 21 Rutgers wrestling (8-7, 3-6) defeated in-state foe Princeton (4-9, 3-2), 28-7, Sunday afternoon inside Jadwin Gymnasium.

The Scarlet Knights earned wins in eight of 10 bouts against the Tigers, which included a major decision from Michael Van Brill (141) and decisions from Shane Metzler (125), No. 20 Scott DelVecchio (133), No. 7 Richie Lewis (165), Joseph Grello (174) and Razohnn Gross (HWT).

The win secured the 12th consecutive winning dual season for Rutgers and head coach Scott Goodale – who picked up his 161st-career victory with the program – and also proved to be the 22 consecutive win over the Tigers.

“It’s a rivalry match, so I’m proud of our guys and proud of our program,” Goodale said. “I love the way we handled the travel, fought through adversity all year long with some of our best guys in and out of the lineup. It’s a product of what goes on in our program and the guys in it.”

The bout of the afternoon came courtesy of John Van Brill versus No. 13 Mike D’Angelo, and Van Brill did not disappoint. With D’Angelo up, 2-1, after the first period, Van Brill caught D’Angelo with a single leg at the 50-second mark in period two and tripped his opponent for the takedown and a 3-2 lead. With D’Angelo starting on top in period three, Van Brill then worked a reversal for the 5-3 result.

It marked Van Brill’s second ranked victory in as many matches, as he also collected a win over No. 14 Andrew Krone last Friday against Wisconsin.

Rutgers sprinted off to a quick 10-0 lead with wins in its first three bouts. Metzler, who filled in for No. 1 Nick Suriano (125), earned his second win of the weekend and his varsity career with a 9-7 decision in sudden victory over Matteo DeVincenzo. Metzler produced two takedowns in the first two periods for a 7-4 lead, but DiVincenzo was able to come back with a last-second takedown to make it 7-7 after regulation.

With the clock ticking down in sudden victory one, Metzler drove DiVincenzo into the mat for two and a 9-7 final result. Metzler’s overtime victory put RU up, 3-0, to start the match.

DelVecchio followed with a strong 10-4 decision over Jonathan Gomez. With a 7-3 lead after two periods, DelVecchio muscled his second takedown of the match to extend his lead and added the riding time point.

Hungry for a win, Michael Van Brill also performed well in his match with Jordan Reich. The redshirt freshman raced out to a 6-1 lead after period one courtesy of two takedowns and two back points in the opening three minutes. A takedown with 1:05 left in the match and the riding time point gave Van Brill the 9-1 major decision.

After a tough 8-1 loss from No. 11 Eleazar DeLuca to No. 12 Matthew Kolodzik, John Van Brill followed with his upset victory to give Rutgers a 13-3 lead at intermission.

Lewis wasted no time keeping the momentum in favor of the Scarlet Knights in his bout with two-time national qualifier Jordan Schleifer. With just a 1-0 lead midway through the second period, Lewis worked a single leg for the takedown and a 3-0 lead. Lewis countered a Schleifer escape in the third period with another takedown, and walked out of Jadwin with a 5-1 decision.

Rutgers closed out the dual with wins in three of its final four bouts. Grello earned a tough 7-0 decision over Matthew Gancayco, highlighted by four near-fall points in the closing period. Gravina followed with a first-period fall over Kevin Parker, stuffing his opponent at the 1:58 mark in the match for six team points to give the Scarlet Knights a comfortable 25-3 lead.

A loss at 197 pounds followed, but Gross made sure the RU faithful in attendance left on a high note. Trailing 3-2 to Christian Araneo midway through period two, Gross spun around for the takedown and a 4-3 lead. Araneo was able to escape to make it a 4-4 score at the end of regulation, but Gross worked another takedown for the 6-4 decision in sudden victory. Gross’ second win of the weekend gave Rutgers its final 28-7 tally.

Rutgers shifts its focus to the Big Ten Championships, held from March 3-4 in East Lansing, Michigan.

Knight Notes

• Rutgers is now 43-33-5 all-time against Princeton, which includes 22 straight wins over the Tigers. The Scarlet Knights have not loss to Princeton since 1991.

• The win also marked the 161st of Goodale’s career at Rutgers. He now needs just six more to surpass John Sacchi for the most in program history.

• Metzler is now 2-0 in his short varsity career for Rutgers with a pin and a decision.

• DelVecchio picked up his 81st-career varsity win with his 10-4 decision Sunday, which makes him 32nd in program history.

• Van Brill now owns wins over five ranked foes this season, which includes victories over No. 13 Mike D’Angelo (Princeton), No. 14 Andrew Krone (Wisconsin), No. 11 Luke Zilverberg (South Dakota State) and No. 19 Larry Early (Old Dominion). Van Brill also has a medical forfeit over No. 1 Jason Nolf of Penn State, which counts as a win towards his overall record.

• The 5-3 decision over D’Angelo was the second this season for Van Brill. The redshirt junior also defeated the Tiger, 7-4, to claim third place at the Midlands Championships.

• Lewis has now captured victories in nine of his last 10 outings, which includes ranked victories over No. 11 Evan Wick (Wisconsin), then-No. 8 Nick Wanzek (Minnesota), then-No. 11 Isaiah White (Nebraska), then-No. 11 Te'shan Campbell (Ohio State) and then-No. 13 Anthony Valencia (Arizona St.). During that span, Lewis has outscored his opponents, 85-30, with three majors and a tech fall.

NU WRESTLING: No. 17 Wildcats Tame SIUE Cougars, 36-10, In Dual Finale

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — No. 17 Northwestern (11-4, 5-4 Big Ten) wrapped up its monumental 2017-18 dual slate with a resounding, 36-10, victory over SIUE (6-15, 4-3 SoCon) at the Vadalabene Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Wildcats finished their dual slate with a .733 winning percentage, tying their best mark since posting a .733 finish in the 2011-12 slate.

NU's three pins tied its season-high, also done against Maryland on December 2, 2017, en route to eight individual wins overall.

Northwestern came out of the gate with three-straight wins, including heaps of bonus points from No. 5 Ryan Deakin (149) and Shayne Oster (157).

Alec McKenna (141) started the afternoon off with a clean, 5-0 decision over Dakota Leach to hand the Wildcats three team points.

Deakin followed up with a first-period pin, his team-best eighth win by fall of the campaign. He wrapped up his dual mark at 14-1, with his only setback coming to #2 Brandon Sorensen (Iowa) in a controversial, overtime decision.

Oster continued his scorching-hot wrestling with a 16-0 tech fall of Karsten Van Velsor. Oster stretched his winning streak to three-straight, a stretch that started with a match-clinching pin of Griffin Parriott against No. 22 Purdue last Friday.

Before the intermission, No. 20 Johnny Sebastian (174) notched a shutout, 8-0 major decision over Bryce Shewan to extend the Wildcat lead to 14 points heading into the break.

Mitch Sliga (184) notched his second pin of the season — and Northwestern's second of the afternoon — with a win by fall in 4:17 over SIUE's Jake Godinez.

The Wildcats received another pin from Zack Chakonis (197), a 6:51 winner. Chakonis's fourth pin of the season tied him for second-most on the squad.

Conan Jennings (285) showcased some late dramatics in his heavyweight bout, accumulating all of his scoring in the final period. He topped SIUE's Tommy Helton, 3-0.

In Northwestern's final bout of the afternoon, Colin Valdiviez (133) needed a come-from-behind finish to earn the victory. He did, notching a late-time takedown to put down John Muldoon, 4-2.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action for the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Michigan, from March 3-4.

Updated RPI | Update Coaches Panel Rankings | Full NCAA Allocations Release

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The NCAA released its qualifier allocations per conference for the 2018 NCAA Championships from March 15-17 in Cleveland. Seven Rutgers wrestlers appeared in the latest NCAA RPI Rankings, while six Scarlet Knights appear in the latest update to the NCAA coaches panel rankings.

Each qualifying tournament was awarded spots per weight class based on current year data. Each wrestler was measured on the following: Division I winning percentage at the weight class; ratings percentage index (RPI); and coaches’ ranking.

For each wrestler that reached the threshold in at least two of the three categories, his qualifying tournament was awarded a qualifying spot in that weight class. Each qualifying tournament, with automatic qualifying status, was awarded a minimum of one wrestler per weight class, which will go to the tournament champion, even if they did not have any wrestlers reach at least two of the three thresholds. NCAA tournament spots for each qualifying event will be awarded at the tournament based solely on place-finish.

This season, the Big Ten Conference led the way with 80 of the total 281 automatic bids on the table.

All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers. The at-large selections will be made based on the following criteria: head-to-head competition; quality wins; coaches’ ranking; results against common opponents; RPI; qualifying event placement; and winning percentage.
