Dover, Del (Oct. 5, 2016) --- Former Delaware State and National Football League star John Taylor is among 25 finalists for induction into the Black College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2017, the organization announced today. The list of 20 players and five coaches was selected from a field of over 175 nominees by a 13-member selection committee of prominent journalists, commentators, historians, former NFL general managers and football executives.

The year’s inductees will be announced on October 26, 2016 and honored during the Black College Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Feb. 25, 2017 in Atlanta, Ga.

Taylor was a star wide receiver and kick returner for the Hornets from 1982-to-1985.

A 1984 Sheridan Black College All-America and 1985 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Offensive Player-of-the-Year, Taylor recorded 100 receptions for 2,426 yards and 42 touchdowns during his Delaware State career, each tops in team history at the time.

He still holds DSU records for longest pass reception (97 yards) and most receiving yards in a game (223).

Taylor was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 1986 NFL Draft (76th player taken), the second highest professional pick of a Delaware State player.

In nine seasons with the 49ers, Taylor was a member of three Super Bowl winning teams. He caught the winning touchdown pass from Joe Montana in the final minute of San Francisco’s 20-16 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XXII.

SUBJECT: Allison Briley Records 1,000th Career Dig But Post Sweeps Wilmington Volleyball

DATE: October 8, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - The two-time defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Champions form Post were too much to handle for the Wilmington University volleyball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Eagles swept their way to victory, 3-0, at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-17, 25-21, and 25-16.

Freshman Jill Braunsberg hit .364 with nine kills on 22 attempts, but the Wildcats (7-10, 4-4 CACC) couldn’t slow down the Eagles (15-3, 7-1 CACC) offense as the visitors hit .300 for the match while only committing nine errors. The Wildcats came into today’s match averaging seven blocks per match, but only amassed four block-assists on Saturday, totaling two blocks in the three sets.

Wilmington led early in the first set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before a mini 3-0 spurt put he home team ahead 11-9 in the early going. Tied at 13-13, the Eagles rattled off five of the next six points to take control of the set at 18-14. The Wildcats closed to within 18-16, but the Eagles scored six consecutive points to earn set point, 24-16.

The Eagles carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 9-3 lead before the Wildcats earned their way back into the game. A kill by Rebecca Rawlinson and a block by Eile Harris and Allison Briley brought the Wildcats to within 14-10, but the Eagles continued to hold onto the lead throughout. Three straight points got the Wildcats to within 22-19, but the teams traded points the rest of the way, putting Post ahead, 2-0, with a 25-21 second set victory.

Again the Wildcats started strong in the third set, taking a 5-3 lead in the early going. The tide turned in favor of the Eagles after the set was tied 10-10, however, as the visitors scored five straight en route to a 9-3 run. An Addalyn Flores ace brought the Wildcats to within 19-15, but the Eagles used another 5-0 run to earn match points before putting it away, 25-16.

Braunsberg’s nine kills led the team while Emma Kongevold added seven terminations. Briley chipped in with six kills while adding a team best 19 digs in the loss. Miranda Shaw dished out 16 assists while Flores added 11 digs to round out the double digits on Saturday.

Briley’s eighth dig of the match was her 1,000th of her career, becoming the ninth player in program history to reach the milestone, but she is only the fourth player in program history to have more than 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs for their career.

The Wildcats will look to get back in the win column when they return to CACC action on Tuesday night at Georgian Court. The match is set for a 6:00 p.m. first service in Lakewood, N.J.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Handed 2-1 Loss at Dominican (NY)

Goldey-Beacom held Dominican (NY) at bay for most of the contest, but a late goal from senior Becca Cordo (Roosevelt, NJ/Hightstown) was not enough in a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss in Orangeburg, NY.

The Chargers cracked the scoreboard in the 51st minute when Leanne Lavelle scored a long goal from the right side for her first tally of the season. Jenna Gray gave Dominican a huge insurance tally in the 87th minute when she netted her fifth goal of the year.

Cordo gave her squad some life with 1:36 left when she netted her third goal of the season and 11th career. But the Lightning could not get a second goal and saw their four-game unbeaten streak snapped.

Junior Amy Runciman (Luton, England) attempted six shots and senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, TX) made four saves for GBC (8-3-1, 4-2-1 CACC), which closed with a 16-7 shots edge and a 10-5 corner-kicks advantage.

Angelica Contreras made 10 saves that included eight in the second half and Gray had two shots for the Chargers (4-7, 4-3).

The loss drops the Lightning into a tie for sixth place in the CACC with five games remaining. The league’s top eight teams go to the conference tournament.

Goldey-Beacom is home next Wednesday against Philadelphia University, beginning at 3:00 pm.

Brown found the back of the net in the 10th minute to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead. He received a pass from sophomore Chahin Aghrim (Bonn, Germany) and found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Hernandez gave GBC some much-needed breathing room in the 32nd minute for a 2-0 lead. He scored an unassisted tally for his second goal of the season and 11th career, tying junior Fernando Sanchez (Madrid, Spain) for 10th place in school history.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - First-year Jake Durham scored 5:05 into overtime as the Saint Michael's College men's soccer team lost to American International College, 4-3, on Saturday evening at Abdow Field. The Purple Knights, who lost their third straight one-goal decision, slipped to 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Yellow Jackets are 5-6 and 3-4. Eight of the past nine meetings have now been decided by a goal or less.

Senior Aaron DaCosta (Newark, Del./Archmere Academy), sophomore Cole McIntire (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) and first-year Brady Channell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) all scored for Saint Michael's, with Channell netting his first goal as a collegian. Junior Daniel du Feu (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) made a career-high 12 saves. DaCosta's goal was the 16th of his career, moving him into a tie for eighth in program annals with Pablo Noguera '05. With 42 points, DaCosta is in a four-way tie for seventh all time.

AIC, which has now played five consecutive one-goal affairs, with four extending to overtime, received two goals and an assist from Durham. Graduate students Jason Burnusuz and Benjamin Jepson also scored, and first-year Steven Hernandez handed out two assists. Senior Sebastian Tamayo made four saves.

AIC scored on the first shot of the game, as Jepsen converted Durham's assist with just 2:07 gone. McIntire had his first team's bid, being denied by Tamayo in the ninth minute, and du Feu countered with a save of his own in the 10th minute that led to a fruitless corner kick for the Yellow Jackets.

Down 1-0, Saint Michael's potted three straight goals in a matter of 4:47 to forge ahead. Early in the 20th minute, first-year Andres Rivas (Caracas, Venezuela/Palmer Trinity School) sent a corner entry pass and DaCosta finished the play with a bicycle kick to knot the contest at 19:15. In the 23rd, Rivas had an initial shot blocked, but McIntire curled a shot off the rebound inside the near post at 22:34. Du Feu kept it a one-goal game less than a minute later with a save, and Channell headed home a teammate's cross at the 24:02 mark to make it 3-1.

Saint Michael's carried the two-goal edge into halftime, but AIC took eight straight shots between the end of the opening half and the start of the second stanza, with du Feu stopping all three sent on goal. Junior Francisco Fernandes' blocked shot in the 51st minute led to consecutive corner kicks, and he finished the second set play by sending a shot that du Feu turned away. DaCosta's bid to extend the lead was denied by Tamayo in the 53rd minute, and du Feu made two more stops before the Yellow Jackets tied the game with two goals 1:03 apart later in the stanza. Durham knocked home Hernandez's cross at 67:15 before Burnusuz knotted the contest.

Du Feu made four more stops before the end of regulation, including going high to deny Burnusuz's attempt at hitting the upper left corner in the 80th minute and turning away Durham's header from the doorstep in the 87th. Rivas' last-second shot from 30 yards trickled into the penalty area as time expired, and the teams headed to overtime.

Sophomore Bradley Anair (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) had a shot 25 seconds into overtime saved before Durham sent a bid just wide 13 seconds later. AIC nearly ended the contest at 92:31, but an offside call negated a goal. Less than a minute later, McIntire had a step on a defender while breaking in on Tamayo but sent a low shot into the keeper, and du Feu countered with a stop of his own 17 seconds later. Early in the 96th minute, Durham took a pass in close from Hernandez and scored from the left side of the box at 95:05.

The Purple Knights host Assumption College next Saturday for a Senior Day contest at 2 p.m.

indell Aguirre Breaks Career Shutouts Record in Goldey-Beacom 1-0 Women’s Soccer Victory Over Philadelphia U.

Senior Cindell Aguirre (El Paso, Texas) became Goldey-Beacom’s career shutouts leader and junior Amy Runciman (Luton, England) converted a first-half penalty kick in their team’s 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Philadelphia University at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

Philadelphia U. had its best chance in the first half, when it owned an 8-3 shots advantage. But Dena Noiseux had a great shot from just outside the box that ringed off the crossbar.

Goldey-Beacom’s first best chance came later in the half when a foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick. Runciman in the 31st minute booted it home for her sixth goal of the season and she is now 4-for-4 for her career from the spot.

It was Runciman’s 18th career goal, putting her in a tie for fifth place in team history with Kristin Johnston (2004-04), and her 59 points keeps her fourth in team annals.

But the day belonged to Aguirre, whose 15th clean sheet breaks a tie she shared with Stephanie Steele (2003-06). Aguirre, who made three saves, notched her seventh shutout this year that ties her with Steele (2003) and Alexis Bastien (2002) for the school’s single-season mark.

Goldey-Beacom (9-3-1, 5-2-1 CACC), which is 4-1-1 in its last six matches, moves into a tie for third place with Holy Family in a hotly contested CACC race. Only four points separates third place from ninth and the top eight teams make the league tournament.

Senior Jane Grimley (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea) attempted three shots for the Lightning and Hanna Glass had three for the Rams (5-6-1, 4-3-1), who ended with a 12-7 shots edge.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday vs. Caldwell as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team. The women’s game starts at 12:30 pm, followed by the men’s contest at 2:45 pm.

SUBJECT: Wildcats Comeback To Take 6-3 Victory over Philadelphia; Lock Up No. 2 Seed in CACC Tennis Tournament

DATE: October 12, 2016
djl

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s tennis team clinched the number two seed in the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 6-3 come-from-behind victory over Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

With one CACC match to play in the regular season, the Wildcats (6-3, 5-1 CACC) clinched the number two seed no matter the outcome of their next match on Thursday. The Wildcats hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Post if they were to both finish 5-2 in the conference. Philadelphia (5-7, 2-4 CACC) is currently tied for the fifth and final playoff spot with one match remaining.

The Wildcats needed to comeback against the Rams on Wednesday, falling behind, 2-1, after the three doubles matches. Anushka Sathe and Milica Knezevic were able to win at number two doubles, 8-1, but both the Wildcats number one and number three doubles dropped their matches.

But the home team stormed back in the singles matches, earning victories in five of the six to steal the match, 6-3.

Leading 3-0 in the first set, Sathe earned the Wildcats first singles victory as the Ram’s student-athlete needed to retire due to an injury. Both Begona Gomar and Laura Gil earned revenge after falling in doubles, taking number two singles, 6-1 and 6-2, and number three singles, 6-2 and 6-0, respectively.

Sabrina Blasi-Smith kept the momentum rolling with another sweep at number four singles, winning 6-1 and 6-3. Knezevic secured the victory at number five singles, blanking her opponent, 6-0 and 6-0, for the victory.

The Wildcats wrap up the fall regular season with another home game on Thursday, hosting Caldwell at the Delcastle Tennis Center. The first serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Late Game Runs Leads Holy Family to 3-0 Sweep of Wilmington Volleyball

DATE: October 14, 2016
djl

NEWARK, Del. - - Holy Family pulled away from the Wilmington University volleyball team late in each set, giving them a three-game sweep, 3-0, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division action on Friday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the night were 25-19, 25-23, and 25-20.

Each set was tightly contested through the first three quarters of the game before the Tigers (9-11, 6-4 CACC) used late-game runs to steal the momentum. The Wildcats (7-12, 4-6 CACC) lost their fourth straight CACC contest, third straight by the sweep.

With the first set tied at 19-19, the Tigers went on a 6-0 run to take the first set, 25-19. The Tigers collected four kills and an ace during the run, moving ahead 1-0 in the match.

Despite the late run, the Wildcats came out of the gates in the second set and scored seven straight to take a 7-1 lead. But the Tigers responded with four straight en route to a 6-1 run. The Wildcats scored three straight to tie the set, 17-17, before continuing the run to take a 21-19 lead on a Rebecca Rawlinson termination. Holy Family retaliated with a 4-1 run of their own before a service error tied the set at 23-23. But the Wildcats couldn’t capitalize as the Tigers scored the final two points of the set to take a 2-0 lead at 25-23.

The Wildcats again came out strong in the third set, using an 8-3 spurt to grab a 12-8 lead. But a Wildcat service error led to a 4-0 run by the Tigers, giving them the lead, 15-14. Allison Briley put down a kill before MIrans Shaw served an ace to give the Wildcats the lead once more, 16-15. Another 4-0 run gave the Tigers a 19-16 lead, this time being a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. An Eile Harris kill beought the home team within 21-19, but the Tigers rattled off the next three points to reach match point. They would end the match at 25-20.

The CACC leader in kills per set was at it again for the Tigers, as Chase Wassel collected 16 kills to lead the match.

Briley led the Wildcats with 11 kills on 35 swings, only committing three errors for a .229 attack percentage. She added 12 digs for a double-double. Harris ended with seven kills while hitting .250, adding three block assists for 8.5 points in the match. Addalyn Flores finished with a match high 19 digs while Jill Braunsberg led the Wildcats with 17 assists.

The Wildcats will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they take to the road for a CACC cross-divisional matchup at Bloomfield. The first serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Subject: University of Delaware Athletics Announces Changes in Coaching Staff
To:

NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware Director of Intercollegiate Athletics & Recreation Services Christine Rawak announced today two changes with the athletics coaching staff.

· Head Football Coach Dave Brock has been relieved of his duties.
· Head Volleyball Coach Bonnie Kenny and Associate Head Coach Cindy Gregory have been relieved of their duties.

All three personnel changes take effect immediately.

Brock was 19-22 in his four seasons at Delaware, including a 2-4 record in 2016.

“After thorough consideration and assessment, we have made the decision to change leadership of our football program and I informed Dave this afternoon,” said Rawak. “As he has been throughout his time at UD, Dave was a true professional. We want to thank him for his four years of service to the University of Delaware. Ultimately, the hard work and effort off the field did not result in the success that we expect on the field. We wish Dave and his family the best.”

Rawak has appointed Co-Defensive Coordinator Dennis Dottin-Carter as the Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the football season. A national search for Brock’s successor will begin immediately.

Rawak also announced that Kenny and Gregory have been relieved of their duties for the women’s volleyball program. Kenny and Gregory coached at Delaware for 15 seasons and helped lead the Blue Hens to five CAA team championships and multiple NCAA Tournaments between 2007-2011.

Brian Toron and Dana Griskowitz will continue to lead the team for the reminder of the season, along with Colleen (Walsh) Caskey, a record-setting four-time All-Colonial Athletic Association hitter who played for the Blue Hens in 2004-07, who has joined the staff during the transition.

“A change in the leadership of our volleyball program was appropriate at this time,” said Rawak. “Our full support will go toward our student-athletes and coaches both on and off the court as they look to finish the season on a high note. We want to thank Bonnie and Cindy for their many years of service and wish them all the best.”

A search for a permanent replacement for head coach will begin immediately.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - A pair of female student-athletes led their respective sports to undefeated records last week, earning positions on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Reports for women’s soccer and women’s tennis on Monday.

Junior transfer Teigha Ward (Ilion, N.Y./Central Valley Academy) tied a program record with four goals against Concordia to earn CACC Co-Player of the Week for women’s soccer while women’s tennis freshman Milica Knezevic (Novi Sad, Serbia) was named CACC Rookie of the Week after a perfect 4-0 week.

Ward became the third player in the program’s NCAA era (2004) to score four goals in a game, a feat that has been accomplished four times now. She scored both goals of the first half to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead at the break. She came back and secured her hat trick with a goal in the 71st minute before tying the record with her fourth goal in the 87th minute. She joins teammate Loran Wyrough in tying Kirsten Stallone’s mark of four goals set back in 2007. Wyrough has performed the feat twice in her career. Ward is now tied for second in the CACC with 20 points, scoring seven goals and adding six assists on the year.

Knezevic perfectly navigated two matches for the women’s tennis team this past week, helping the team to a 2-0 mark and secure the number two seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament this weekend. Playing at number five singles, Knezevic defeated both her opponents from Philadelphia and Caldwell, 6-0 and 6-0, this week. She also teamed up with doubles partner Anushka Sathe to win both their matches, 8-1, against Philadelphia and 8-2 against Caldwell. Knezevic is now 8-4 overall at number five singles this year, 7-3 in dual matches, and 6-1 against conference opponents. Her and Sathe ate 8-3 overall in doubles, 8-2 in dual matches, and 6-1 against CACC opponents.

Ward will lead the Wildcats into three games this week, first at Philadelphia on Wednesday. Knezevic takes the team to the CACC Tournament this weekend, squaring off against Post on Saturday in the semifinals.

Mon, October 17, 2016
Dover, Del. (Oct. 17, 2016) --- Delaware State running back Mike Waters (fr.) and center Ernest Mengoni (sr.) have been honored by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for their play in the Hornets’ 41-27 loss to Florida A&M last Saturday.

Waters was selected as the MEAC’s Co-Rookie-of-the-Week after rushing 25 times for a career-high 150 yards last week, his first collegiate 100-yard game and the most rushing yards by a DSU freshman since 1984.

For the season, Waters is second on the Hornets and fifth in the MEAC in rushing at 58.7 yards per game (352 total). His previous high this season was 96 yards vs. Morgan State on Oct. 1.

Mengoni has been recognized as the MEAC’s Co-Offensive Lineman-of-the-Week after helping pave the way for DSU’s 510-yard outburst vs. Florida A&M last week, the most by the Hornets since tallying 512 vs. Hampton in 2012.

The Hornets rushed for 325 yards in the game, their most since matching the total in a 63-28 victory over St. Francis (Pa.) in 2006. Last week’s rushing yardage included a career-best 169 by Brycen Alleyne (so.), marking the first time DSU had two 100-yard runners in a game since 2008.

Alleyne’s rushing total last week was the most by a Hornet since Kareem Jones ran for 230 vs. Winston-Salem State in 2008. He is now fourth in the MEAC with 400 rushing yards (66.7 pg) and fourth in the league at 131.5 all-purpose yards per game.

This marks the second week in a row that a Hornet has honored by the MEAC. Wide receiver Fatu Sua-Godinet (fr.) was named Rookie-of-the-Week by the league after catching five passes for 84 yards and a touchdown vs. Hampton on Oct. 8.

The Hornets begin a two-game road swing on Saturday (Oct. 22) at South Carolina State. Game time is 1:30 p.m. in Orangeburg, S.C.

DSU will also visit Bethune-Cookman on Oct. 29 before returning home to face North Carolina Central on Nov. 5 (2 p.m.).

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women’s soccer team closed out its nonconference schedule with a 5-1 victory over Millersville on Thursday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (9-6) used four different goal scorers to get their five goals as freshman Gabby Perry scored twice to cap the victory. Millersville (5-9) closed the gap to 2-1 in the first half but the Wildcats scored the final three goals of the game to run away with the win.

A strong first half carried the Wildcats, outshooting the Marauders, 10-3, to open things up. Loran Wyrough regained the team lead with her eighth goal of the year in the seventh minute, shooting one over the Millersville’s goalkeeper from just outside the 18-yard box.

The Wildcats put in their next shot in the game as well, taking a 2-0 lead in the 14th minute with a cannon shot form Teigha Ward. The junior transferred tied Wyrough for the team lead with her eighth goal of the year, her third goal in three games with her left foot from outside the penalty area.

The Marauders cut the lead in half in the 28th minute, using a long ball over the top to free Amanda Mcelhare behind the defense.

But the Wildcats quickly responded with a first half insurance goal in the 33rd minute, slotting a pass down the middle to Gabrielle Perry. Perry scored her fourth goal of the season off a feed from Rebecca Dolhansky to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead at the break.
