NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's and women's swimming and diving teams will begin the 2014-15 season Saturday as the men host Georgetown while the women will face Georgetown and St. Francis (Pa.) at Rawstrom Pool beginning at 1 p.m.

This is the fourth consecutive year Delaware has opened its schedule against Georgetown. Last season, the UD men defeated the Hoyas 146-93, while the Blue Hen women beat Georgetown 160-78.

"Our first dual meet is always an eye opener. It's our first test of the season to see where we fit in with our opponents and compare ourselves to where we were last year at this time," said University of Delaware head coach John Hayman, who is entering his 25th season as head coach of the Blue Hens. "The first collegiate meet for our freshman is exciting in the fact that they want to prove their abilities to their teammates, coaches, and parents. We are looking for some good performances from freshmen Pat Savidge, Nick Badsky, Sarah Braatz, and Natalie Feola to name a few."

The Blue Hens return six swimmers who received All-CAA accolades last season, including sophomore Cory Camp who was named CAA Male Rookie Swimmer of the Year.

Dominique Montoya was All-CAA in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay for the Blue Hen women while Caitlin Stockwell was a NCAA Zone A Diving Meet participant a season ago.

Georgetown returns 18 swimmers who received All-Big East honors last season. The Hoya men's and women's teams are each coming off second place finishes in last year's Big East Championships.

The 2013-14 season was the first year St. Francis (Pa.) did not win the Northeast Conference since the 2008-09 season as the Red Flash finished in fourth place in the conference. St. Francis (Pa.), coached by former UD assistant Rory Coleman, returns five swimmers who received All-NEC recognition last season.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The University of Delaware's women's soccer team could not recover from two first half goals from William & Mary as the Blue Hens fell to the Tribe 3-1 Friday in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup.
Delaware, which came into Friday's matchup with an unbeaten CAA record, managed just seven shots against the Tribe's stout defense.
The Blue Hens (6-6-1, 2-1-1 CAA) received their lone goal from Rachel Vaccaro off an assist from Natalie Zelenky just minutes into the second half. The score cut William & Mary's lead to 2-1, but that was as close as Delaware would get.
"I am so proud of the way we responded in the second half. We showed how we can play, but unfortunately we came up short while we were chasing the tie," said University of Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda. "William & Mary is a very good team and a slow start against a quality opponent can really hurt. They played very well and deserve all of the congratulations."
The Tribe got on the scoreboard just 1:15 into the game on a goal from Anna Madden. William & Mary (10-2-1, 4-1 CAA) then added to their total when Madden registered her second goal of the game and fourth score of the season to give the Tribe a commanding 2-0 lead.
After Vaccaro pulled UD within one goal early in the second half, William and Mary's Emory Camper extended the lead to 3-1 with her sixth goal of the season to seal the Tribe's victory.
The Tribe outshot Delaware 21-7. The 14 shot deficit was the biggest shot discrepancy for UD this season. Vaccaro and Alison Slark led the Hens with two shots each in the losing effort.
The Blue Hens will look to get back on the winning track Sunday as Delaware wraps up its weekend road trip with a game at Elon at 1 p.m.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Volleyball Uses Balanced Effort To Defeat William & Mary, 3-0, in Throwback Match at CSB

DATE: October 10, 2014

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team returned to its old stomping grounds Friday night and came away with a familiar result as the Blue Hens posted a three-set victory over William & Mary before a raucous crowd at the Carpenter Sports Building.

Delaware, which played its home matches at the CSB through the 2011 season and captured CAA Tournament titles on Viera Court in 2007, 2010 and 2011, posted the victory by set scores of 25-16, 25-21, 25-18. The Blue Hens improved to 9-11 overall and 2-3 in the CAA following Friday night's win, while the Tribe fell to 5-14 overall and 1-4 in league play.

UD junior Katie Hillman led a potent Blue Hen attack as she posted a match-high 12 kills against just two errors to hit .400 for the night, while sophomore Autumn Jenkins contributed eight kills. Chandler Bryant and Alexa Swann each had seven kills while Jill Meyers chipped in with six, while those three players combined for just two attack errors. Featuring a balanced effort, Delaware hit .327 for the match, its third highest mark of the season.

Julia Anderson dished out 37 assists on the night, while Hillman and Taylor Hollingsworth each made 12 digs.

Liz Brown and Michelle Heath posted nine kills apiece for the Tribe, which fell to the Blue Hens for the ninth time in the last 10 meetings.

"I love this gym, I always have, just because of the people, the crowd, the tightness, and the atmosphere here," said Blue Hen head coach Bonnie Kenny. "We did a really nice job offensively, and passed really well. That allowed us to stay in system on offense; we had some really nice distribution and were able to get our middles involved. Having Jill (Meyers) back was helpful on the right side, and our outside hitters did a pretty nice job too."

Delaware dropped two of the first three points of the match, but would not trail in a set the rest of the night. UD led by as many as 10 points in the opening frame before putting the set away on a Meyers kill, and after the second stanza was knotted at 18-18, the Blue Hens ran off three straight points to take control.

The teams were tied at 16-16 in the third set, but Delaware won six of the next seven points to surge in front, while Swann and Meyers combined on a block to put the match away.

"It was really exciting tonight; the atmosphere here was absolutely incredible," Anderson said. "I think we played well. We definitely had our ups and downs, but we kept more consistent energy throughout the entire match."

Delaware will look to carry its momentum down to the Bob Carpenter Center on Sunday when the Blue Hens host James Madison at 1 p.m.

Match Notes:
• Delaware's nine attack errors tied for the season-low, along with the Sept. 2 win over Delaware State
• Katie Hillman recorded her fifth double-double of the season, tying her for the team lead with Erin Layne and Autumn Jenkins
• Chandler Bryant and Alexa Swann each had a team-high three blocks for UD
• Delaware was coming off a seven-match road trip and played in Newark for the first time since Sept. 16

SUBJECT: Peet and Patzner Connect to Give University of Delaware 2-1 Double OT Win at Princeton in Field Hockey

DATE: October 10, 2014

PRINCETON, N.J. - For the second time in three games, the University of Delaware field hockey squad needed double overtime to finish an opponent as the Blue Hens defeated Princeton, 2-1, Friday evening at Bedford Field.

Just 41 seconds into the second overtime, junior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) dished off a pass to sophomore Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos), who lifted the ball over the goalie into the cage for the victory.

The Tigers (3-8) got on the board first as Maddie Copeland gave Princeton the 1-0 advantage in the 11th minute.

Delaware (8-5) was held scoreless until the 52nd minute when junior Allie Mikelson (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) tipped in a pass from Peet off of a penalty corner to tie things at 1-1.

Princeton had numerous opportunities in the first overtime to close out UD, but Blue Hens freshman goalie Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected four saves in the 15-minute period.

In total, Oltmans registered seven saves in her first game back after missing three contests due to a knee injury.

The Blue Hens tallied three defensive saves for the second time this season as sophomore Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va./Westfield) collected the first two defensive saves of her career and Mikelson added a defensive save of her own for the fifth time this year.

Anya Gersoff was credited with the loss for the Tigers after finishing with seven saves and two goals allowed.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
"Great goal to win in OT again, but we have to stop putting up inconsistent performances throughout the game and limiting our team development and growth opportunities. The last couple of weeks Delaware field hockey has improved so much and now we have to continue that process. I would like to compliment our goalkeepers, Fran Orella and Emmeline Oltmans, for putting this team in the position to win games in the recent weeks. It is nice to know that we have two outstanding goalkeepers keeping us in the game when called upon."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Football Bounces Back with 34-24 CAA Victory Over Elon

DATE:  October 11, 2014

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens got touchdowns from five different players and scored three times in a span of three minutes late in the first half to post a 34-24 Colonial Athletic Association football victory over Elon at Delaware Stadium.

The Blue Hens (4-2, 2-0 CAA) remained one of just three unbeaten teams in league play as they jumped out to a 27-3 halftime lead and held off an Elon comeback in the second half on the way to the victory. Delaware, now tied with New Hampshire (3-0) and Villanova (3-0) atop the CAA standings, bounced back from a 10-7 non-league setback to Sacred Heart a week earlier.

Delaware quarterback Trent Hurley threw a short touchdown pass in the first half to Nick Boyle - his team high third scoring catch of the season - and scored himself on a six-yard run early the final stanza, Wes Hills and Jalen Randolph scored on short runs, and freshman cornerback Malcolm Brown returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown to lead Delaware, which won for the fourth time in the last five games.

"It feels good to win," said Delaware head coach Dave Brock, who improved to 8-3 in games at Delaware Stadium in his two seasons at the helm. "I thought we played a solid first half, made some plays, and did better offensively despite some challenges. I thought our kids played really hard, they were physical, and really competed. It feels good to be 2-0 in the league. I was happy that we had no turnovers and really made some explosive plays. We ran the football well (181 yards) and that's what we need to do to be what we want to be offensively. Our kids up front battled. We had more energy today."

Elon (1-5, 0-2 CAA), a first-year member of the CAA after years in the Southern Conference, suffered its third straight loss but didn't go down easy as the Phoenix pulled to within 10 points with nine minutes left to play but never could get closer. Quarterback Mike Quinn threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns and hit Tre Lennon on scoring plays of 10 and 35 yards in the second half to keep Elon in range.

Hurley completed 16 of 28 passes for 178 yards, Hills ran for a game-high 111 yards, and Michael Johnson caught nine passes for 134 yards to lead the offense, which posted a season-high 34 points. Defensively, senior defensive end Derrick Saulsberry registered two of Delaware's five sacks as the Blue Hens pressured Quinn throughout the day.

"We knew they had some good skill players on the outside," said Saulsberry, whose pressure on Quinn forced the interception return by Brown. "We knew we had to put pressure on them and get in the quarterback's face. I thought we were in his face for most of the game."

The Hens took control late in the first half, building on a 6-3 lead - thanks to Boyle's touchdown catch - and taking a 24-point advantage into halftime powered by a quick 21-point scoring spree. Hills capped an 84-yard drive with a one-yard dive with 5:00 left in the first half to give Delaware a 13-3 lead.

After Delaware held Elon to a three-and-out, the Hens got the ball back and moved 71 yards on just four plays, capping the drive with a one-yard burst by Randolph with 2:25 remaining to go up 20-3. The big play in the drive was Hurley's 59-yard pass to Johnson down to the Elon seven-yard line.

On Elon's next play from scrimmage after the touchdown, Brown stepped in front of a Quinn pass in the flat and sprinted 20 yards untouched into the end zone to give UD a 27-3 lead at the break.

Quinn's scoring tosses of five yards to Justin Osborne and 10 yards to Lennon in the third quarter helped Elon narrow the lead to 27-17 with 24 seconds left in the third quarter, but the Hens got one back as Hurley capped a 67-yard drive by moving out of the pocket, breaking a tackle, and diving into the end zone for a six-yard touchdown run with 10:56 remaining. Lennon's 35-yard scoring pass from Quinn with 8:58 left to play pulled the Phoenix to within 10 points again at 34-24 but it was too little too late.

Delaware will look to continue its winning ways next Saturday when the Blue Hens host CAA rival Towson for Homecoming at 12:30 p.m. The Hens have downed the Tigers six times in the last seven years, including last season when Delaware rallied for a late 32-31 victory against a Towson team that advanced to the NCAA FCS national championship game.

Hen Scratchings:
• The game was played in front a season-high crowd of 19,476 for Parents & Family Weekend
• The game marked the first meeting ever between the two schools in football
• Delaware has now scored a point in 208 straight home games since 1983
• Michael Johnson has now caught 19 passes for 262 yards over the last two games and extended his pass-catching streak to 29 straight games. He also went over 4,000 career all-purpose yards during the game
• Nick Boyle caught four passes for 27 yards and became Delaware's all-time leader for pass receptions by a tight end with 81, surpassing the mark of 78 by John Yergey in 1987-89
• Malcolm Brown's interception for a touchdown was the first by a UD freshman since Kenny Bailey in 1993 vs. Lehigh
• Delaware, Elon, and fellow CAA member Albany remain the only three teams at the NCAA FCS level who have not lost a fumble this season

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Volleyball Holds Off James Madison, 3-2, in Five-Set Thriller

DATE: October 12, 2014

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team won seven of the final nine points during the deciding fifth set as the Blue Hens claimed a 3-2 thriller over Colonial Athletic Association rival James Madison Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Delaware, which won its second straight match while improving to 10-11 overall and 3-3 in league play, captured the victory by set scores of 25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-10. The Dukes dropped their fourth consecutive match, falling to 10-9 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

The Blue Hens jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the fifth set, but JMU quickly answered with five straight points to pull even. However Chandler Bryant responded with a kill, before two service aces by Autumn Jenkins put Delaware back up three. The Blue Hens would not trail from there, putting the match away on a Katie Hillman kill.

UD sophomore Alexa Swann tied her career-high by posting 16 kills, as she hit .303 for the match while also pacing the squad with six blocks. Bryant chipped in with 15 kills and four blocks, while Hillman recorded her second consecutive double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs.

Sophomore setter Julia Anderson handed out 56 assists while making a season-high 13 digs on the afternoon, while classmate Taylor Hollingsworth led Delaware with 23 digs.

Kate Whitmire slammed a match-high 18 kills for the Dukes, while MacKenzie Kleespies led all players with 29 digs.

"We'll take a win any way we can get it," said Blue Hen head coach Bonnie Kenny. "We got a win at home, and had to earn this one. We've just got to keep building. Our serve got a lot better in the final three sets, which helped our block and allowed us to play better defense. So I was glad to see that come alive."

Delaware erased a 21-16 deficit by closing the first set on a 9-2 run to jump in front, but the Dukes led for a majority of the second set to pull even. The Blue Hens posted a three-point victory in the third frame before JMU responded in the fourth, setting up the dramatic fifth set.

"Our serving was great in the fifth set, which made it easy for me to block," Swann said. "Our team has struggled in the past sustaining momentum, but today we were able to bounce back to win it, so it's good that we're progressing in that area."

Delaware will look to extend its winning streak to three on Thursday when the Blue Hens travel to UNCW for a 7 p.m. match with the Seahawks.

Match Notes:
• Hillman notched her team-leading sixth double-double of the season
• Anderson recorded her second double-double in the last four matches
• UD snapped a two-matching losing streak to the Dukes
• Delaware reached the double figure wins mark for the 12th consecutive year

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Soccer Falls to CAA Foe Northeastern 3-2 in Overtime

DATE: October 22, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware men's soccer team was unable to close out the victory Wednesday as Northeastern scored the final two goals of the game to clinch a 3-2 come-from-behind overtime victory over the Blue Hens in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.

Wednesday's game was the third overtime game in UD's last five contests. The 3-2 defeat was the first time Delaware has lost a regular season overtime game since a 5-4 double overtime defeat to Seton Hall last season. The Blue Hens also lost to St. John's 2-1 in overtime last season in the NCAA Tournament.

"I thought this was a very disappointing result for us," said University of Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. "We had our chances to put them away and we just did not do it. When you score two goals you expect to win these games at home, but giving up three goals is just inexcusable."

After allowing an early first half goal to Northeastern's Frantzdy Pierrot, the Blue Hens (10-5, 3-2 CAA) tied the game when Ben Asante put a diving header into the back of the net. Marco Siverio was credited with the assist on Asante's third goal of the season.

Delaware then took the lead three minutes into the second half when Guillermo Delgado scored his team and CAA-leading 11th goal of the season on a free kick from just outside the box.

Northeastern (6-9, 3-2 CAA) answered UD's score when Ackim Mpofu headed in a corner kick from Donovan Fayd at the 71:25 mark to tie the game at two.

As time ticked down in regulation, both squads had opportunities to take the lead, but neither could convert the would-be game-winning goal and the matchup headed for overtime.

Once in overtime, the Huskies wasted little time sealing the win as Pierrot headed in a corner kick from Daniel Arvidsson just 1:07 into overtime to record his second goal of the game and give Northeastern the 3-2 victory.

Delaware has now lost three of the last four matchups with Northeastern and, with the loss, UD missed a chance to get one step closer to clinching a CAA Tournament berth.

The Blue Hens will return to action this weekend as UD travels south to face College of Charleston in another CAA matchup with postseason implications. The contest between the Hens and Cougars will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium.

SUBJECT: Michaela Patzner Steers University of Delaware Field Hockey to Critical 3-2 CAA Victory Over No. 18 Northeastern

DATE: October 24, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - In a rematch of the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Championship game, the reigning champion University of Delaware field hockey team was victorious once again with a 3-2 win over No. 18 Northeastern Friday evening at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.

With the win, the Blue Hens extend their conference-winning streak to 12 games dating to last season and improve to 10-6 on the year and 4-0 in CAA play.

Vanessa Pryor got the Huskies (11-4, 2-1 CAA) on board first, but Delaware junior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) responded less than 30 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1 on a penalty stroke.

Patzner gave the Hens a 2-1 advantage in the 30th minute off a penalty corner with an assist from sophomore Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos).

NU tied the game once again in the 49th minute before UD took the lead for good with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. Junior Jacki Coveleski (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) was able to tip in a pass from Patzner off a penalty corner for the 3-2 advantage.

Patzner finished the game by tying a career-high with five points on two goals and one assist.

Delaware freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected six saves in the win.

Becky Garner was credited with the loss despite making six saves of her own for Northeastern.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
"We knew today would be a battle between two great teams. We were fortunate to pull it out in the end as it could have gone either way. Northeastern is a great, well-coached team. Defensively, we came up big a couple of times and on the attack we remained poised. In all, we never stopped fighting and I think that's the reason why we pulled it out in the end."

Junior Michaela Patzner
"This was a big win for us. We know we beat them twice last year, but it's a new year and they've been having a tremendous season."

HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Tonight's win was the first this season over a ranked opponent.
· Nine of UD's 16 games have been decided by just one goal. The Hens are 7-2 in one goal games this year.
· Delaware has won three straight against Northeastern.
· Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) leads the team with 24 points on eight goals and eight assists. Her five points this evening pushes the junior into 12th place in the Delaware record books with 81 career points (31g, 19a) to bypass Jodi Byrd (1995-98), who recorded 79 points (35g, 9a) during her career. Beth Manley (1983-86) is 11th all-time with 84 points (33g, 18a).
· Patzner's 19 career assists is good to tie for 10th all-time with former teammate Heather Hartman (2010-13).
· Allie Mikelson (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) added another defensive save to the Delaware records as the junior now has 10 on the season.
· As a team, the Hens have 12 defensive saves through 16 games played, the most since 2000 when UD recorded 12 in 20 games.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Swimming & Diving Stays Undefeated; UD Men Fall to George Mason
DATE: October 25, 2014
FAIRFAX, Va. - The University of Delaware men's and women's swimming and diving team had mixed results in its respective meets Saturday at George Mason. The women's team stayed undefeated as UD defeated the Patriots 151-149, while the men's team fell to George Mason by a 166-129 score at McKay Natatorium.
The UD women (3-0) tallied first place finishes in eight races as Brittany Lazear and Alyssa Sanders had a team-high three wins each. Lazear was victorious in the 1,000 freestyle (10:24.93), 500 freestyle (5:04.58), and was a part of the winning 200 freestyle relay squad (1:35.48). Sanders finished first in the 100 backstroke (57.94), 200 backstroke (2:04.96), and was also part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.
The women's team excelled on the diving board as Caitlin Stockwell, Lize Keefer, and Kristina Congdon finished first, second, and third respectively in the three-meter diving competition. The Blue Hens also swept the top three spots in the one-meter diving competition with Congdon taking first place. The Hens also got first place finishes from Madeline Maher in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.54).
"As expected the meet was very close on the women's side," said Delaware head coach John Hayman. "It came down to the last event and our women pulled out some fantastic performances for the win. "Brittany Lazear, Haley Farrell, Alyssa Sanders, and all of the divers should be congratulated. The men's meet had several close races but in the end we did not prevail. Alex Hillsley and Everett Albert brought home victories for UD with some great swims."
Hillsley led the men's squad (1-1) with three first place finishes as the sophomore was first to touch in the 100 backstroke (51.95), 200 backstroke (1:53.92), and was a part of the victorious 200 freestyle relay (1:25.14). Albert added a win in the 200 freestyle (1:44.25) and was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay. Patrick McCann swept both diving competitions as the junior won both the three-meter (291.23 points) and one-meter (253.20) events. Also taking home first place for Delaware was Patrick Savidge in the 400 individual medley (4:08.38).
Both Blue Hen teams will return to action next week at the Colonial Athletic Association Pod Meet at UNCW. In addition to the host Seahawks, the UD men will face William and Mary while the women will take on William & Mary and James Madison.

SUBJECT: Hofstra Puts End to University of Delaware's 12-Game CAA Winning Streak as Blue Hens Fall, 5-2, in Field Hockey

DATE: October 26, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - Hofstra University put the pressure on early and never let up as the University of Delaware field hockey team had its 12-game Colonial Athletic Association winning streak halted Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to the Pride at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.

A win would have clinched the CAA regular season title and home field advantage in the upcoming conference tournament for the reigning champion Blue Hens (10-7, 4-1 CAA). Now Delaware will need to defeat Drexel in addition to relying on Hofstra to lose to William & Mary and/or James Madison next weekend.

The Pride (12-5, 3-1 CAA) held a 3-0 advantage at halftime before UD redshirt sophomore Maddie O'Beirne (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall) put the Hens on the board in the 37th minute.

Hofstra senior Janel Boileau and sophomore Stella Schoen paired up three times in the game for goals, including twice in the second half, and gave the Pride the 5-1 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation.

Delaware appeared to have momentum in the final 10 minutes but would receive just one more goal as junior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) put in a penalty stroke to cut the score to 5-2 at 65:15.

Blue Hens freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected two saves in the loss while Carys Swan stopped five UD shots for the HU win.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
"At halftime, I wasn't worried about the score, but more about our performance. That improved, especially early on in the second half, but then we just have to keep pushing it. We allowed them to get back in it and we put back in the same scenario as the first half. I think after a great game on Friday, we got a bit comfortable with ourselves. We forgot to bring our fight and Hofstra did a great job in exposing us."

HEN SCRATCHINGS
· With her goal today, junior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) continues to lead the team with 26 points on nine goals and eight assists. She now has 83 career points (32g, 19a) and is just behind Beth Manley (1983-86) in the career record books. Manley is 11th all-time with 84 career points (33g, 18a).
· Redshirt sophomore Maddie O'Beirne (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall) now has five career goals.
· O'Beirne is the 12th player on the squad to have tallied at least one point this season.
· The Blue Hens had previously won two straight and four of the last five over the Pride. UD is now 22-7 all-time against Hofstra.
· Delaware's last loss in CAA action came on Nov. 3, 2012 as the Hens lost to No. 18 Drexel, 2-1, in the conference championship game.
· The Blue Hens recognized breast cancer awareness by wearing pink socks and ribbons.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
· Friday, October 31 - Delaware at Lafayette - 7 p.m. - Rappolt Field (Easton, Pa.)
· Sunday, November 2 - Drexel at Delaware* - 1 p.m. - Fred P. Rullo Stadium (Newark, Del.) - Senior Day

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Soccer Drops 4-2 Decision to Hofstra, Falls Short of CAA Playoff Berth
DATE: October 26, 2014
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The University of Delaware women's soccer team was unable to clinch a berth in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Tournament as Hofstra defeated the Blue Hens 4-2 behind three Leah Galton goals Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Hens needed a win or a Towson loss in order to punch their ticket to postseason play but the loss to Hofstra along with Towson's 2-0 win over William & Mary Sunday clinched the sixth and final playoff spot for the Tigers. Delaware and Towson each earned 11 points in league play but the Tigers won the tie-breaker thanks to a 1-0 win over the Blue Hens back on Oct. 17.

Delaware will miss the postseason for the first time in three years, but the Blue Hens finished with seven wins for the fifth consecutive season.

"The girls gave everything they had this afternoon and we are very proud of their effort," said University of Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda. "I can't say enough about our four seniors and what they have meant to our program. They went out today with all the pride and effort they showed during their four years as Blue Hen soccer players. We wanted to send them out with their fourth CAA Tournament appearance, but just could not get it done."
Hofstra (11-6-1, 6-2-1 CAA) showed why it has one of the best offensive attacks in the country as the Pride scored the first two goals of the game on a pair of Galton scores. Galton gave the Pride the early lead with a goal just 5:55 into the game and then gave Hofstra a 2-0 lead with her 12th goal of the season at the 57:12 mark.
The Blue Hens (7-9-2, 3-4-2 CAA) cut the lead in half on Rachel Vaccaro's fifth goal of the season at the 69:46 mark, but that was as close as the Blue Hens would get.
UD's momentum, however, was thwarted moments later when Sam Scolarici scored her CAA-leading 15th goal of the season to give the Pride a 3-1 lead. Moments later, Galton sealed the game and clinched the hat trick with her third goal of the game, giving Hofstra a 4-1 lead with 12 minutes remaining.
Despite the large deficit, the Blue Hens continued to fight until the final whistle as Natalie Zelenky gave UD its second goal of the game at the 88:27 mark. Mikala Kin was credited with the assist on Zelenky's fifth goal of the season. Vaccaro and Zelenky tied for the team-lead in goals this season with five each.
Hofstra outshot UD 21-10 and the Pride's four goals were the highest single-game total allowed by Delaware this season.
Northeastern, who the Hens tied 2-2 on Friday night, earned the No. 1 seed for the upcoming CAA Tournament, which will begin this Sunday, Nov. 2. James Madison finished as the No. 2 seed followed by Hofstra, William & Mary, Drexel, and Towson.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Field Hockey Outlasted in Overtime as Delaware Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker to Drexel

DATE: November 2, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware field hockey team dominated in all offensive statistical categories Sunday afternoon, but Drexel University came out on top in the 1-0 overtime game to finish regular season play at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.

The loss stripped the Blue Hens (11-8, 4-2 CAA) from winning the CAA regular season title and the chance at hosting the league's postseason tournament next weekend.

The Dragons (10-8, 2-4 Colonial Athletic Association) had nothing to lose in the game as their season was over no matter what and went into overtime with that mindset.

Just 21 seconds into the extra period, Christina Conrad found Chloe Pachuilo for a cross as Pachuilo netted the golden goal into the lower left hand corner of the cage.

The Hens had plenty of opportunities to get on the scoreboard after collecting 10 penalty corners, but were never able to capitalize on the breaks.

Junior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) led all players with six shots, four of which were on goal, while sophomore Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) tallied four shots, all on goal.

UD freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) was credited with the loss despite making three saves.

Drexel's Jantien Gunter collected seven saves in the win. Allyson Fuller added two defensive saves while Rebecca Werner also tallied a defensive save for the Dragons.

The Blue Hens now await their postseason ranking and matchup as No. 18 Northeastern and William & Mary fight for the top spot in the CAA with an 11 a.m. game Monday. Inclement weather forced the Huskies and Tribe to postpone their game Sunday.

The CAA Tournament will be held next Friday (Nov. 7) and Sunday (Nov. 9). The winner of the NU/W&M game will serve as host for the postseason tournament.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
[On loss]: "We were not connecting today the way that we can. We have to find a way in the next two to three days to reconnect with everybody in order to be ready to go for the conference tournament semifinals."

[On dominating corners]: "Getting corners is one thing, but executing and finishing them is part two. That is the difference between a 3-4 goal win and an overtime loss to a very motivated Drexel team."

[On upcoming CAA Tournament]: "At the end of the day, today proves that if you take care of business, then your season continues. Otherwise you are done for the year."

HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Delaware outshot Drexel, 14-6 and held a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners.

NEWARK, Del. -- Blue Hen sophomore Alexa Swann tied her career-high with 16 kills while junior Katie Hillman added 10 as the University of Delaware volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak by posting a 3-0 victory over Northeastern Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Delaware took the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-16 as the Blue Hens improved to 13-14 overall and an even 6-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association. UD needs just one more victory to clinch a berth in the CAA Tournament on Nov. 21-23. Northeastern dropped its third straight contest, falling to 10-16 overall and 2-10 in league play.

Swann posted a match-best 16 kills on 28 swings while committing only three errors as she hit .464 for the match. Hillman contributed 10 hills against just one attack error, while Jill Meyers had six kills on day. Julia Anderson handed out 35 assists during the afternoon, while Taylor Hollingsworth made 19 digs.

Chandler Bryant had five blocks on the day while Alexa Swann added four, as Delaware enjoyed a 9-5 block advantage over the Huskies.

"We were extremely efficient offensively today," said Blue Hen head coach Bonnie Kenny, whose team posted a .292 attack percentage on the day. "Our number of kills, sideout percentage and attack percentage were all excellent. Julia (Anderson) did a good job of mixing it up today, so our hitters could do what they wanted. We were just very efficient in the middle of the court and on the pins."

Brigitte Burcescu and Taylor Reiter each led Northeastern with eight kills, while Kristen Walding dished out 25 assists and Natalie Skiba recorded 18 digs.

Delaware never trailed during the opening set, going up by as many as eight points before putting the set away on a Swann kill. The Blue Hens jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the second stanza, and again led from there. The Huskies never got closer than three points the rest of the frame, as Delaware took a two-set advantage into the intermission.

The squads were tied five times early in the third set, but the Blue Hens used a four-point run to go in front 11-7 and were not threatened from there. Delaware closed the match by winning 13 of the final 20 points, including Anderson's kill that ended the contest.

The Blue Hens return to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. match at James Madison.

Match Notes:
• Swann reached double figure kills for the fourth straight match, and for the seventh time in the last 10 contests
• Hillman went over the 900-kills mark for her career
• Anderson posted her third consecutive match of least 30 assists
• The Blue Hens' .292 attack percentage was UD's highest since Oct. 10

SUBJECT: Season-Best Times Highlight University of Delaware Swimming and Diving Performance on Final Day of CAA Pod Meet

DATE: November 2, 2014

WILMINGTON, N.C. - On the second and final day of the Colonial Athletic Association Pod Meet at UNCW's Seahawk Natatorium Sunday, the University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team earned the only team victory for the Blue Hens as UD defeated UNCW 210-143, but fell to both James Madison (219-143) and William & Mary (213-128).

The Delaware men's squad dropped both dual meets to UNCW (209-144) and William & Mary (213-128).

The men have now dropped three of their first four meets, while the women boast a 4-2 record this season.

Cory Camp led the Blue Hen men (1-3, 0-2 CAA) with two wins on the day while Everett Albert added a third victory for UD in the 200 freestyle (1:42.29). Camp, the 2014 CAA Rookie Swimmer of the Year, was victorious in the 500 freestyle (4:40.02) and 1,650 freestyle where he posted a time of 16:15.86.

Many Blue Hen swimmers earned their best times of the season during the two-day weekend meet. Freshman Patrick Savidge continued his strong swimming by coming in second in the 400 individual medley with a season-best time of 4:03.33. Alex Tooley turned in his best time in the 400 IM with 4:04.71, which gave him third place in the event.

Tim Ware finished in third place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.66, which was his best time of the season in that event. Alex Hillsley gave his best performance to date in the 200 backstroke as the sophomore registered a time of 1:52.61. Nicholas Badsky had a season-best time of 47.10 in the 100 freestyle event.

"Our first two swimming and diving sessions resulted in season-best performances by most members of our team," said University of Delaware head coach John Hayman. "The energy we had in the pool and on the sideline was truly unbelievable. We have a few weak events to fill, but overall I could not be more impressed. Our 200 and 400 IMs were exciting races that resulted in big points for us. If we keep up the high energy, we will again turn in some outstanding swims."

Winning efforts from Hailey Farrell and Brittany Lazear highlighted the women's performance this weekend. The Hens moved their record to 4-2 (1-2 CAA).

Farrell put forth a time of 4:32.71 in the 400 IM, which was good for the win and for her best time in the event this season. Lazear also had top time for 2014-15 as the senior recorded a time of 5:02.27 in her winning effort in the 500 freestyle.

Alyssa Sanders tallied a top performance in the 100 backstroke event as her time of 57.94 was good for a second place finish. Annie Nunes posted top season times in both the 200 IM (2:10.46) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.05) events. Both of those performances earned her third place finishes. With a 1:54.08 finish, Dominique Montoya tallied her best time of the season in the 200 freestyle.

Both Delaware teams will return to action next Saturday as UD hosts a dual meet with LaSalle and Rider. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at Rawstrom Natatorium.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Sophomore Running Back Jalen Randolph Named to CoSIDA District 2 All-Academic Football Team

DATE:  November 6, 2014

NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware sophomore running back Jalen Randolph, who has combined outstanding academic work with solid performances on the football field, was named to the Capital One/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District 2 All-Academic Football Team on Thursday.

Randolph, a 6-1, 230 lb. sophomore from Ridley Park, Pa. (Ridley High School), was among 25 student-athletes selected to the team from a vote of member sports information directors.

To be eligible, student-athletes must carry a minimum 3.3 grade point average, be a starter or key reserve, and have spent at least four semesters at their school. District 2 includes all Division I (FBS and FCS) schools in Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia.

Also nominated for the award from Delaware was sophomore safety Ryan Torzsa, who carries a 3.74 grade point average as a business undeclared major.

A health behavior science major with a 3.36 grade point average, Randolph is now eligible for Academic All-American honors that will be announced later this month. He is a Dean's List student who is also a two-time member of the Colonial Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll. He has also volunteered with several team community service initiatives while at UD.

"It is a great honor to be able to represent my team and my University on such a prestigious team," said Randolph. "Education has always been one of my core values and I am excited about the opportunities it will create for me in the future."

"The University of Delaware football program is extremely proud of Jalen on earning this award," said Delaware head coach Dave Brock. "He has done a great job on the field as a player and as a leader and he has done an equally great job in the classroom. Jalen exemplifies what we want Delaware football to be about."

Randolph becomes the 33rd football student-athlete at Delaware to earn All-District honors since 1970 and is the first since defensive end Ethan Clark was honored in both 2011 and 2012. The Blue Hens have had at least one player on the All-District team 14 times in the last 16 years and the last UD gridder to earn Academic All-American honors was in 2004 when linebacker/defensive end Ben Cross and defensive lineman Chris Mooney were both honored.

A two-year standout in the Delaware backfield, Randolph currently ranks second on the team in rushing with 78 carries for 430 yards and a team-high six touchdowns and has also caught six passes for 79 yards. He has two plays over 75 yards this season and rushed for a season-high 118 yards vs. Delaware State back in September. He ranked third on the team with 319 yards rushing and four touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2013.

Delaware (5-4, 3-2 CAA) will return to action this Saturday when the Blue Hens travel to CAA foe Albany for a 3:30 p.m. game on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Bob Ford Field.

DATE:  November 6, 2014

NEWARK, Del. -- Non-league games vs. North Carolina, Lafayette, and Jacksonville (Fla.) and a rare Colonial Athletic Association opener vs. Villanova highlight the 2015 University of Delaware football 11-game schedule announced Thursday.

The Colonial Athletic Association announced the complete league schedule Thursday for all 12 schools.

Delaware will play CAA home games vs. William & Mary, New Hampshire, Albany, and James Madison and will hit the road to take on Villanova, Rhode Island, Towson, and Elon as part of the eight-game slate. For the second straight year, Delaware will not play league opponents Stony Brook, Maine, and Richmond. The Hens have yet to face Stony Brook since the Seawolves joined the CAA in 2013.

Delaware and Villanova have traditionally played during the final week of the season and have done so each year since 1999 but that will change for just one year next fall when Delaware opens league play by traveling to the Wildcats on Sept. 19. The move comes about in order to accommodate Villanova, which needed to alter the dates of several games due to the scheduled visit of Pope Francis to the Philadelphia area next September.

The Blue Hens will open the season with two non-league games vs. Jacksonville (Fla.) on Sept. 5 and vs. Lafayette on Sept. 12 followed by the visit to Villanova on Sept. 19. A first-ever game vs. Atlantic Coast Conference foe North Carolina closes out the month on Sept. 26 in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Delaware will play Jacksonville for the second time in three years after also opening the 2013 season vs. the Dolphins at Delaware Stadium in head coach Dave Brock's UD coaching debut. The Blue Hens last played Patriot League foe Lafayette during the 2004 NCAA Tournament opening round, winning by a score of 28-14 at Delaware Stadium. The teams have not met during the regular season since a 27-0 Delaware victory in 1972.

October action will begin with Delaware hosting William & Mary on Oct. 3 followed by an Oct. 10 visit to Rhode Island, a bye week on  Oct. 17, a home game vs. current CAA leader New Hampshire on Oct. 24, and the short trip down to Towson on Oct. 31.

In November, Delaware will host Albany on Nov. 7 and James Madison on Nov. 14 before closing the regular season Nov. 21 with another trip to the state of North Carolina at CAA newcomer Elon.

The dates for special events such as Homecoming and Parents Day will be announced later as will game times.

With the win, the second-seeded Blue Hens (12-8) will face the fourth seed, James Madison, in Sunday's 1 p.m. final contest. JMU advanced to the final after defeating top-seeded Northeastern, 3-0, in the first game of the day. Earlier this season, Delaware defeated the Dukes, 6-5.

UD came storming out of the gates by scoring three goals within the first 4:14 of the game.

Freshman Taylor Lister (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) grabbed the initial score less than two minutes into the contest. Juniors Jacki Coveleski (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) followed with goals of their own in the fourth and fifth minutes, respectively.

Coveleski finished the day with a career-high two goals after giving Delaware the 4-1 advantage in the 11th minute off an assist from sophomore Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va./Westfield).

Pippin Saunders put the Tribe (7-12) on board in the 55th minute, but the Blue Hens continued to put the pressure on in the waning minutes en route to the win.

Freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected three saves on the day while W&M's Meredith Savage picked up six saves.

The winner of Sunday's CAA Championship game will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Volleyball Cruises To Three-Set CAA Road Victory at William & Mary

DATE: November 8, 2014

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team played its final regular season road match of the season Saturday night, posting a decisive three-set victory over William & Mary at Kaplan Arena.

The Blue Hens, who improved to 14-15 overall and evened their CAA mark at 7-7, won the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-23. The Tribe fell to 6-23 overall and 2-12 in the league after dropping its sixth consecutive match.

UD junior Katie Hillman led the offensive attack with a match-high 13 kills, while sophomore Autumn Jenkins celebrated her 19th birthday by adding eight kills and nine digs. Chandler Bryant contributed seven kills against no attack errors as she hit .467 for the night, while the junior also posted a season-high eight blocks.

Taylor Hollingsworth made a match-high 18 digs during the victory, while Julia Anderson dished out 36 assists.

"It sure is nice to rebound tonight after a tough loss (at JMU Friday)," said Blue Hen head coach Bonnie Kenny. "We are a team that constantly plays hard and gives great effort almost to a fault, so I am proud we worked together for a road win."

Mallory Brickerd slammed 14 kills for William & Mary, while Dessi Koleva paced the Tribe with 17 digs.

The opening set was tight early on, but the Blue Hens won six consecutive points to go in front 16-8 and cruised from there. Delaware led by as many as 10 points in the frame, before Hillman posted a kill to end the set.

UD never trailed in the second stanza, eventually leading by as many as seven before putting the set away on a kill from Bryant.

The Tribe won two of the first three points in the third frame, but Delaware took the next three and did not trail again. A four-point run increased the UD margin to 15-9, but William & Mary later rallied with five consecutive points to pull even at 20-20. The teams were still tied six points later, before a Hillman kill and an attack error by the Tribe's Liz Brown ended the match.

Delaware, which has already clinched a berth in the upcoming CAA Tournament, wraps up its regular season next weekend by hosting Elon on Friday and UNCW on Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Match Notes:
• Hillman reached double figure kills for the fourth straight match
• Bryant's eight blocks were one shy of her career-high set last year vs. Hofstra
• Alexa Swann and Jill Meyers each had four blocks for UD, which held a 12-7 block advantage
• Delaware went 5-5 in its 10 road matches on the year

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Fresh off its second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association title, the University of Delaware field hockey team learned on the bus ride home it will host Kent State University in a NCAA Play-In Game Wednesday at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.

Game time has yet to be determined and is expected to be announced late Monday morning.

"What a neat experience to watch the NCAA Selection Show together on the bus coming home from winning the CAA," remarked Delaware's fourth-year head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "We are very excited to return to our home turf and welcome Kent State to Rullo Stadium. It's now up to us to prepare for our next game as we have prepared for every 'next game' throughout the season."

The Blue Hens (13-8) advanced to NCAA Tournament play after defeating James Madison, 2-1, earlier today in the CAA Championship final.

SUBJECT: Balanced Effort Leads University of Delaware Volleyball To 3-0 Home Victory Over Elon

DATE: November 14, 2014

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team received at least six kills from five different players as the Blue Hens posted a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-14) Colonial Athletic Association victory over Elon Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Delaware, which claimed its second consecutive match, improved to 15-15 overall this season including 8-7 in league play. The Phoenix dropped its fourth in a row, falling to 6-25 overall and 1-14 in the conference.

Blue Hen junior Katie Hillman slammed a team-high nine kills for Delaware, while classmate Jill Meyers added eight kills on just 13 swings while not committing an attack error as she hit .615 for the night. Meyers also had five blocks during the win, while sophomore Alexa Swann recorded six blocks in addition to six kills.

Chandler Bryant blasted eight kills for UD, while Autumn Jenkins chipped in with six. Julia Anderson handed out 35 assists on the night, while Taylor Hollingsworth led the defensive effort with 15 digs.

"That is exactly what we need our right side player to do; Jill Meyers was excellent with her blocking and attacking tonight which was nice to see," said Blue Hen head coach Bonnie Kenny. "We ran the middle well and defensively we won some long rallies, which was good."

Megan Gravley led Elon with a match-high 11 kills, while Chanelle Smith posted 10 digs.

After the teams were tied at 14-14 midway through the opening set, the Phoenix eased out to a 21-18 advantage. However the Blue Hens responded by winning the final seven points of the frame, putting the set away on a kill by Hillman.

The second set was also tight, and Elon earned a pair of set points late in the frame. However after trailing 25-24 the Blue Hens answered with three straight points, the final one coming on a block by Meyers and Swann, to take a two-set cushion.

Delaware and Elon were knotted at 5-5 early in the third, but the Blue Hens exploded for a nine-point run and were not threatened from there.

The Blue Hens, who have already qualified for next weekend's CAA Tournament, conclude their regular season on Saturday with a 7 p.m. home match against UNCW.

Match Notes:
• Delaware swept the season series from first-year CAA member Elon
• Ariel Shonk made 10 digs, her third double figure digs match of the year
• Katie Hillman had her four-match streak of double digit kills matches snapped
• Taylor Hollingsworth went over the 700-digs mark for her career

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Men's Soccer Advances to Colonial Athletic Association Title Game with 1-0 Overtime Victory Over Northeastern
DATE: November 14, 2014
NEWARK, Del. - In a game that saw both teams unable to score in regulation, the University of Delaware men's soccer team was finally able to find the back of the net in overtime to give the Blue Hens a 1-0 win over Northeastern Friday in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
The victory gives Delaware a berth in Sunday's CAA Championship game where the Blue Hens will take on No. 6 James Madison, who upset No. 2 UNCW 2-0 in the first semifinal Friday.
Freshman Carlos Perales proved to be the hero Friday for Delaware as the freshman scored the game-winning goal on a free kick just minutes into the first overtime session.
"What a great way to send a great crowd home happy tonight," said Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. "Carlos has battled two ACL injuries and to see him step up and finish with such a quality strike was terrific. Our defenders were very solid tonight against a team that gained some momentum toward the end of the season, so I give our lads a lot of credit to keep a clean sheet. The group is excited to bring a first ever CAA Championship game against our old rivals from James Madison, so I am hoping that we have standing room only yet again Sunday at 1 p.m."
Delaware (13-5-1, 5-2-1 CAA) had many scoring opportunities in regulation, but Northeastern goalkeeper Dylan Faber made multiple outstanding saves to preserve the scoreless tie.
Guillermo Delgado used his speed to put pressure on the Husky defense all night and that speed put Perales in position to win the game. The game-clinching score was setup by a Northeastern foul on Delgado early in overtime. The freshman then showed tremendous poise and buried the ball in the top left corner for the game-winner.
Delgado and Joe Dipre led UD with two shots each on the night, while Donovan Fayd, Brad Fountain, and Frantzdy Pierrot led Northeastern with two shots apiece. UD outshot Northeastern 9-7 in Friday's winning effort.
"Tonight was an amazing game and an amazing win for us," said Perales. "I am so happy right now. To win the CAA in the regular season and to play at home in the postseason is great. I am just happy I was able to come through when my team needed me to."
Friday was the second time this season the Blue Hens and Huskies played an overtime contest. Northeastern defeated UD 3-2 in overtime on Oct. 22. This is the second consecutive year where the Huskies downed Delaware in the regular season, only to see the Blue Hens get revenge with a victory in the postseason. UD needed two overtimes to knock off Northeastern in last season's CAA quarterfinals.
In Friday's first semifinal matchup, the James Madison University men's soccer team was able to upset UNCW by a 2-0 margin.

The Dukes scored one goal in both halves and used a strong defensive effort to thwart the Seahawk offense.
Josh Grant put the Dukes on the board in the first half at the 33:52 mark, while Jonathan Barden gave JMU the all-important two-goal advantage when senior converted a penalty kick opportunity.
On Sunday, the Blue Hens will look to win the CAA Championship for the second time in four years and clinch a NCAA Tournament berth for the third time in four years.
Top-seeded Delaware will take on No. 6 JMU Sunday at 1 p.m. for the CAA Championship at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium. The game will be televised on the America Sports Network. Check your local listings for the channel in your area.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Drops Lid-Lifter to Lafayette, 63-52, Despite Double Doubles From Bell and Caracciolo

DATE: November 14, 2014

EASTON, Pa. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team was unable to recover Friday after shooting 13.8 percent in the first half en route to a 63-52 loss at Lafayette in the season opener.

Despite the first half's offensive woes, the Blue Hens (0-1) received double doubles from junior Alecia Bell (Newport News, Va./Woodside) and senior Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson). Bell registered career-highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds while Caracciolo notched 15 rebounds and 10 points.

Sophomore Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J./John F. Kennedy) added 13 points of her own while classmate Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) exploded for a career-best 15 rebounds.

Delaware was held to just 17 points in the first half after shooting 4-for-29 from the floor. The Blue Hens recovered slightly in the second half by shooting 11-for-15 (.314), but it wasn't enough, as they then couldn't make the defensive stops that were necessary.

Free throw shooting seemed to be the Hens' only saving grace as UD went 22-for-32 (.688) from the charity stripe during the game.

Delaware outrebounded the Leopards, 60-35, but also committed 19 turnovers to just 10 for LC.

Lafayette's Emily Homan and Jamie O'Hare each tallied 16 points in the win for the Leopards (1-0).

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Tina Martin
"For me, it all started at the defensive end. We've been harping at our kids about defense all preseason about making stops. We then got ourselves in a lot of trouble after we actually played some quality defense but missed a lot of point-blank shots. At that point it started snowballing from missing a lot of layups to getting frustrated to not rotating on defense. We'll go through some growing pains, but we can and will bounce back from this."

HEN SCRATCHINGS
· The Blue Hens snapped a 10-game winning streak in season openers and are now 23-21 all-time in the lid-lifter.
· The last time UD lost a season opener came on November 21, 2003 when the Blue Hens lost, 80-78, to Richmond in overtime. Delaware finished the 2003-04 season with a 19-10 record.
· Delaware recorded two 60-plus-rebound games last season after tallying 63 at Rider (Nov. 24, 2013) and tying a CAA Tournament record with 60 against the College of Charleston (March 15, 2014).

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
· Sunday, November 16 - #rv Marist at Delaware - 2 p.m. - Bob Carpenter Center (Newark, Del.)

SUBJECT: Turnovers Prove Costly as Top-Ranked New Hampshire Football Pulls Away From Delaware in Second Half For 43-14 Victory

DATE:  November 15, 2014

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of Delaware stayed within striking distance of top-ranked New Hampshire for over a half, but could not overcome four turnovers as the Wildcats eventually pulled away for a 43-14 Colonial Athletic Association football victory Saturday afternoon at Cowell Stadium.

The Blue Hens, who were facing their first No. 1 ranked opponent since Eastern Washington in the 2010 FCS national championship game, had their two-game winning streak snapped while falling to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the CAA. No. 1 ranked New Hampshire won its ninth straight game since an opening week loss at FBS opponent Toledo, improving to 9-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 in league play. UNH also won its school-record tying 12th straight home game and claimed at least a share of the CAA title.

New Hampshire piled up 493 yards of total offense and averaged 6.8 yards per play in posting the victory. Quarterback Sean Goldrich hooked up with tight end Harold Spears on touchdown passes of 12, 16, and 19 yards and finished the day completing 24 of 33 passes for 285 yards. Spears caught eight passes for a season-high 108 yards.

For Delaware, quarterback Trent Hurley hit on 18 of 30 passes for 182 yards and Wes Hills posted his third 100-yard rushing effort of the season with 115 yards and two touchdowns.

"This was certainly a disappointing loss but give credit to Coach (Sean) McDonnell and New Hampshire, they are worthy of their ranking and I'm very impressed with them," said Blue Hen head coach Dave Brock. "I'm disappointed with how we played in the first half, we had some opportunities but couldn't capitalize. In the second half, on the first couple of drives we weren't able to stop them. Our focus was to limit R.J. Harris and we did a decent job there, but we weren't able to stop the run game. We've got to regroup and try to win our last game, have a winning season, and send the seniors out on a positive note in a rivalry game against Villanova."

The Wildcats struck first with a 26-yard Christian Breda field goal, while Nico Steriti scored from six yards out on the final play of the opening quarter to give UNH a 10-point lead. The Wildcats extended the advantage to 17 when Goldrich connected with Spears on a 12-yard scoring toss with eight minutes to play in the second stanza, but Delaware would not go away.

On a fourth-and-one, Hills scampered 47 yards for a score to put the Blue Hens on the board, and UD immediately recovered an onside kick - with Kevin McLaughlin kicking and Justin Watson recovering the loose ball - to maintain momentum. Delaware eventually moved the ball to the UNH 20 yard line, but the drive stalled and Garrett Greenway's 37-yard field goal attempt hit the right upright.

UD had another chance late in the half when Patrick Callaway recovered a fumble forced by David Mackall on the Wildcats' 40, but Hurley was intercepted as New Hampshire took a 17-7 lead into the locker room.

The Wildcats received the third quarter kickoff and marched right down the field, capping a 75-yard drive when Goldrich hit Spears for a 16-yard strike. However Delaware would answer in just five plays, as Hurley connected with Jerel Harrison on a 47-yard pass to the UNH 2 before Hills scored on the ensuing play to bring UD within 23-14 at the 9:02 mark of the quarter.

But UNH would counter with a four-play, 65-yard drive, as Spears hauled in his third touchdown pass of the game from 19 yards out to again make it a 16-point game.

Early in the fourth quarter Nick Boyle caught a pass from Hurley but then fumbled, while the Wildcats recovered on the Delaware 30 and scored four plays later on a two-yard rush by Jimmy Owens with 12 minutes remaining. On the Blue Hens' next possession Hurley fumbled while being sacked, giving the Wildcats the ball on the Blue Hen 28 yard line. The Wildcats again capitalized on the UD turnover, when Goldrich hit Harris for a nine-yard strike to close the scoring.

Michael Johnson caught a team-high seven passes on the day for Delaware and now has 72 receptions for the year, becoming the fourth UD player in school history to haul in at least 70 passes in a season. Mackall and freshman linebacker Donte Raymond led the UD defense with 11 tackles each.

"We had an opportunity to cut the lead to three points late in the second quarter, but we just weren't able to capitalize," Hurley stated. "I missed some shots, and when we tried to make some plays late in the game, it kind of got away from us."

Delaware closes out its 2014 regular season next Saturday when the Blue Hens host rival Villanova at 12 noon at Delaware Stadium.

HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware is now 3-8 all-time vs. top-ranked team, including an 0-2 mark vs. New Hampshire
• Delaware has now scored in the first half in 10 straight games and in 70 of the last 71 games since 2009
• The Hens were looking to win three straight games in the month of November for the first time since 2004
• Delaware senior FS Jake Giusti played in his 50th career game at Delaware, becoming the 26th UD player to reach that milestone
• Between Hills and fellow sophomore Jalen Randolph, the Hens have had a 100-yard rusher in six of the last eight games

SUBJECT: Liberty Edges University of Delaware Men's Basketball, 61-55, in Blue Hens' Season Opener

DATE: November 17, 2014

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team held a two-point lead with three minutes remaining but missed its final seven shots from there as Liberty edged the Blue Hens, 61-55, Monday night at the Vines Center in UD's season opener.

Maurice Jeffers slammed home a follow dunk at the 3:03 mark to put Delaware in front 55-53, but Liberty's Davis Andoh hit one free throw before burying a tough 18-foot jumper with 1:38 remaining to give the Flames the lead for good. The Blue Hens had the ball in the final minute, but Blue Hen freshman Chivarsky Corbett's three-point attempt from the right corner was off the mark, while Tomasz Gielo hit two free throws at the other end to put Liberty up three with 23 seconds to go.

Cazmon Hayes then misfired from deep, before Gielo connected on three more free throws to close the scoring.

Liberty, which opened its season last Friday with a win over Division III Randolph College, improved to 2-0 on the young season. Delaware dropped its season opener for the ninth consecutive year.

UD sophomore Cazmon Hayes scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Blue Hens, while freshman Kory Holden produced 13 points, six rebounds and five assists in his impressive Delaware debut. Marvin King-Davis was the third Blue Hen in double figures with 11 points, while Barnett Harris corralled a team-high nine rebounds.

Delaware held a 47-37 rebounding advantage and attempted 14 more shots than Liberty, but the Blue Hens went just 3 of 24 from long range.

Gielo posted a double-double for the Flames with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Joe Retic added 11 points and Andoh chipped in with nine.

The teams were knotted 30-30 at the half, but after falling behind by five, Delaware went back in front 38-37 when Holden found Eric Carter for a dunk. UD was still up a point at 40-39 after a Jeffers basket, but Liberty erupted for a 10-point run to take a 49-40 advantage with 8:57 to play.

Delaware was still down seven a minute later but the Blue Hens responded with a 9-0 spurt of its own, going back in front 53-51 at the 4:49 mark on a Hayes layup. UD was back up two after the putback dunk by Jeffers, but Liberty scored the final eight points of the game to pull out the win.

"When we got down nine I didn't know what to expect, but for our kids to fight back the way they did, we'll be alright," said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. "We missed some shots at the end, but we got the shots we wanted. We got great looks from deep but they just didn't go in - sometimes that happens. I'm also proud of the way we battled and fought on the offensive glass."

Delaware opened the game with an 8-4 lead as Holden scored six early points, but UD missed its next nine field goal attempts as Liberty used an 8-0 spurt to take a four-point advantage midway through the period.

The Blue Hens responded and led by as many as seven points at 23-16 following a Corbett three-pointer, before the Flames scored four straight points to knot the contest at 27-27. Hayes then drilled a triple with 30 seconds on the clock, before Retic answered from deep for Liberty as the teams went into the break even at 30-30.

"Once the ball went up I just played my game," said Holden, who committed just two turnovers in 32 minutes of action. "We're just going to keep working hard at practice; this is just the beginning."

Delaware returns to action on Friday with a 10 p.m. Eastern game at Cal Poly.

Game Notes:
• Liberty avenged a 77-64 loss to Delaware in Newark on Jan. 1, 2014
• UD dropped to 6-3 all-time vs. Big South opponents
• The Blue Hens opened the season on the road for the fifth straight year
• Delaware played without Kyle Anderson, who will miss the first month of the season with a right hand injury

SUBJECT: Cal Poly Uses Dominant First Half Run To Race Past University of Delaware Men's Basketball, 78-60

DATE: November 21, 2014

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly closed the first half with a dominating run as the Mustangs opened up a huge halftime lead and went on to defeat the University of Delaware men's basketball team, 78-60, in non-conference action Friday night at the Mott Athletics Center.

The Mustangs, who improved to 2-1 on the year, led 20-16 at the 7:46 mark of the opening half following three free throws by Blue Hen sophomore guard Cazmon Hayes, but took over from there.

Cal Poly scored the next seven points, and following a Kory Holden three-pointer, went on a 16-0 tear to extend the margin to 43-19 with 1:13 on the clock. Hayes finally ended the spurt with a three-point play, but Ridge Shipley buried a three-pointer and Brian Bennett beat the horn with a jumper to make it a 48-22 margin at the break. From there Delaware only got closer than 20 when Chivarsky Corbett drained a last minute three-pointer to cap the scoring.

Shipley finished with a career-high 21 points for the Mustangs, who shot 18 of 33 (54.5%) during the opening half and knocked down 12 triples for the game. Bennett contributed 12 points for Cal Poly, David Nwaba chipped in with 10, and Maliik Love dished out a game-high eight assists.

Hayes paced Delaware (0-2) for the second straight game with a career-high 22 points, as he knocked down three treys and finished 9 of 10 from the foul line. Holden reached double figures for the second consecutive contest with 12 points, while Corbett added nine on three shots from long range. Barnett Harris grabbed six rebounds as he led UD in boards for the second straight game.

Delaware, playing without junior forward Marvin King-Davis who missed the contest with a recurring hamstring injury, utilized a nine-man rotation that featured five freshmen and four sophomores.

"We ran into a buzzsaw in the first half; they didn't miss many shots and we didn't force them to miss," said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. "But we learned a lot about our team in the second half. Our intensity was good during the second period, we just need to play with that intensity for 40 minutes. There are a lot of things we need to get better at; we have a bunch of young guys and they need to understand what it takes to succeed."

After shooting just 6 of 25 from the field during the opening 20 minutes, Delaware responded to score 38 second half points as the Blue Hens outscored Cal Poly by eight in the final stanza.

The Mustangs increased the lead to 64-29 six minutes into the period but UD would not quit as the Blue Hens scored nine straight points, culminated by a Devonne Pinkard three-pointer, to close within 26 points with 11:39 left.

Three minutes later Anthony Mosley scored seven consecutive Delaware points, burying a three-pointer from the top of the key to cut the margin to 69-45. However the Blue Hens would never seriously threaten as the Mustangs put the finishing touches on the victory.

Game Notes:
• Delaware fell to 2-7 in games in the state of California
• Cal Poly avenged an 82-72 loss to the Blue Hens in Newark in Jan. 4, 2014
• The game featured two teams that competed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, as Cal Poly captured the Big West Tournament
• Cal Poly held a 41-36 rebounding edge and committed just four turnovers
• The margin was Delaware's worst loss since a 19-point defeat at North Dakota State last December

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The fifth-seeded University of Delaware volleyball team fell to No. 4 seed UNCW, 3-1, Friday afternoon in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Quarterfinals at the College of Charleston's F. Mitchell Johnson Center.

The Seahawks, who improve to 21-10 on the season, advance to the tournament semifinals where they will take on top-seeded Charleston Saturday at 1 p.m. The Blue Hens, competing in the CAA Tournament for the eighth time in nine seasons, end their year with a 15-17 mark.

"I'm sorry I cannot coach this team another match," said Delaware head coach Bonnie Kenny. "It was a fun season and one we all enjoyed. Hopefully this postseason experience will benefit us in the future. We will get better and the best part about this team is we don't lose anybody."

UD sophomore Autumn Jenkins led the Blue Hens by slamming a match-high 17 kills, while second team All-CAA selection Katie Hillman chipped in with 13 kills along with nine digs. Chandler Bryant contributed eight kills on the afternoon, while Alexa Swann paced Delaware with five blocks.

Sophomore setter Julia Anderson dished out 41 assists for the Blue Hens, while libero Taylor Hollingsworth led the defensive effort with 22 digs.

Morgan Kline posted a double-double with 16 kills and 17 digs for UNCW, while Nicole Lott supplied 15 kills and 12 digs. The Seahawks hit .235 for the match, while Delaware mustered only a .156 attack percentage.

The teams were knotted at 9-9 in the opening set, but UNCW won the next four points and led the rest of the way. The Blue Hens never got closer than three, while a kill by the Seahawks' Meredith Peacock ended the set.

The second frame was tied 17-17 before a kill by Jenkins and an ace from Hollingsworth put Delaware in front for good. The margin was still two at 24-22 when Hillman notched a kill to even the match at a set apiece.

The Blue Hens captured six consecutive points early in the third stanza to take a 6-2 lead, and UD was still in front 14-11 following two straight ball handling errors by UNCW's Victoria Phillips. However the Seahawks responded by taking the next six points and cruised from there to win the third set.

The fourth set was tight early on, as a kill by Hillman brought Delaware within 15-13 of the Seahawks. But the Blue Hens could not get closer, as UNCW took 10 of the final 14 points of the set to put the match away.

Match Notes:
• Jenkins reached double figure kills for the 14th time this season
• Hillman notched double digit kills for the 12th time in 15 matches
• Anderson posted her seventh match of at least 40 assists
• Hollingsworth surpassed the 20-digs mark for the 14th time on the year
• Delaware faced UNCW in the postseason for the first time in school history
