SUBJECT: University of Delaware Football Opens 2014 Preseason Camp, First Scrimmage Set for Saturday

DATE:  August 4, 2014
sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- Beautiful sunny skies greeted the University of Delaware football squad as the Blue Hens took part in the first day of preseason practice Monday afternoon at the Delaware Practice Fields.

Delaware's 95-man roster went through multiple drills, position-by-position skill sessions, seven-on-seven drills, and plays from scrimmage as part of the two-hour plus session held under temperatures in the low-80s.

Blue Hen head coach Dave Brock, who will begin his second season at the Delaware helm this fall, was happy to finally get preseason drills underway and pleased with the team's reaction to the first day of practice.

"It's great to have the players back and on the practice field," said Brock, who led his first Delaware team to a 7-5 record last fall. "Our energy was good today and it was great to see a lot of guys running around and the younger guys flying around. It's nice to see the guys who you would expect to stand out really stand out. MJ (senior wideout Michael Johnson) had an outstanding practice as you might he imagine he would and (quarterback) Trent Hurley was phenomenal in his first day back. And we have brought in some talented kids. We will go back, watch the tape, and have a better feel for it. It's going to be a physical camp and we will practice a lot of situational football."

Hurley, a senior who led the Colonial Athletic Association in passing efficiency a year ago and will become the first Blue Hen to start three straight years at quarterback since Matt Nagy in 1998-2000, had several big throws during the scrimmage section of practice Monday, hitting Johnson on a 70-yard bomb for a touchdown down the right sideline and just a few snaps later finding senior wide receiver Stephen Clark on another long gain.

Delaware will continue single practices on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday beginning at 3 p.m. and will close out the week with the first scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 3:30 p.m. at Delaware Stadium. Delaware's annual Media/Photo Day is set for Sunday, Aug. 10, at 3:30 p.m. All Delaware practices as well as the scrimmage and Media Day are open to the public.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Football Finalizes Agreements to Play Five Atlantic Coast Conference Opponents Through 2020 Season

DATE:  August 8, 2014
sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- Atlantic Coast Conference opponents will be familiar names on the University of Delaware football squad's schedule in the coming seasons, UD Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Eric Ziady has announced.

Delaware has finalized deals with five ACC schools to play road games against teams from that powerful NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision conference over the next six seasons.

The Blue Hens, who will open the 2014 campaign Aug. 30 at ACC opponent Pittsburgh, have also worked out agreements to travel to the University of North Carolina (Sept. 26, 2015), Wake Forest (Sept. 17, 2016), Virginia Tech (Sept. 2, 2017), Pittsburgh (Aug. 31, 2019), and North Carolina State (Sept. 5, 2020).

Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina all played in bowl games following the 2013 season while Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, and Pittsburgh all appeared in bowl games during the 2012 campaign.

Ziady noted that he is still looking to schedule an NCAA FBS opponent for the 2018 season.

"It is exciting for us to have the opportunity to play some of the nation's top football programs on our schedule year in and year out," said Ziady. "Playing schools from the ACC gives our student-athletes the chance to compete against some of the top teams in the country and I know our fans will be excited to see these opponents on the schedule and to visit some outstanding venues to cheer on the Blue Hens."

"These future schedules represent a great opportunity for the players in our program to compete against some of the best teams in the country," said Delaware head coach Dave Brock. "We look forward to the opportunity to compete annually against some of the nation's best. This will create great excitement for our football team and for all the people who love Delaware football."

Since the 2003 season, the Blue Hens have played eight games against FBS opponents, facing Navy (2003, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2013), and Maryland (2008).

Former Dover High product Brian Bossard returns home to coach University of Delaware Blue Hens as wide receivers coach for 3rd time

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Editor-Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium-Newark, DE-August 10, 2014-Bryan Bossard a former product out of Dover High School and at the University of Delaware returns home to his native state as a wide receivers coach for 2nd year head coach Dave Brock.

The former Senator from Dover High School played both tailback and defensive linebacker and with the Blue Hens as a cornerback from 1985-88 under former head coach Tubby Raymond has earned the Most Valuable Player Award and graduated in 1989 with a Agricultural Business Management Degree. From there, Bossard has coached at Bucknell twice and just recently from 2010-13 under former Blue Hen standout and head coach Joe Susan, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Army, Wyoming, West Chester and Morehouse College.

I'm very excited that Coach Brock gave me a call asked if I was interested and I said extremely it is good to come back home as my wife Kimber is a Glasgow High graduate she is a Delaware grad everywhere I would look this is my first Saturday here to enjoy the Delaware football tradition."

"At the scrimmage we have got some great talent on our squad it is good to see the hitting along with the players competing our freshman I like how hard they compete there is nothing for you to compare to college football this is the learning curve in how you have to be along with a long process."

"I like all the receivers had plays we are still in the evaluation process in looking on who is going to do what in different positions my biggest concern is what you did yesterday is can you put the scrimmages on tape can you replicate good days consistently." "It is pretty simple game that is where the stress factor comes it is good to see Michael Johnson, 2013 All CAA and All American all the guys have been around he is a for real good football player and I'm glad he is wearing Blue and Gold I enjoy watch him (Michael Johnson)playing on the gridiron."

"At Dover High where I lettered as a running back and I have pride from Kent County I'm a downstate person I don't care if it's an upstate team as I consider Middletown to be an upstate team in which they are not I have pride in Kent County as I hear they are going to tear down the old Dover High School on Pat Lynn Drive which is a sad moment which is a part of my growth and has helped me to mature on the football field as where I am right now people who love Delaware are from The First State a little which is Blue Collar state my brother lives outside of Philadelphia where share things that I tell him that Delaware is for me not for him but I am excited to be back and to help rekindle that Coach Raymond has instilled in me I have a lot of my former teammates that I had played with are back and to come watch the football practices hopefully they can get a view there is the Delaware way this is what we do and it is good seeing former UD wide receiver Eddie Conti is moving back into town Jammin Elliott, current Colts linebacker Mike Adams and former fullback Darryl Brown are back to share with the current players on the tradition of what Delaware football this is a Blue Hen family."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Soccer to Kickoff 25th Season of Competition Tonight at Home vs. Monmouth

DATE:  August 22, 2014

sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- A historic season for the University of Delaware women's soccer program will kickoff tonight, Friday, Aug. 22, when the Blue Hens open their 25th season by hosting Monmouth University at newly-named Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium at 7 p.m.

Admission to all UD soccer games is free. Fans are reminded that seating will be limited in the stands while Grant Stadium (formerly known as Delaware Mini-Stadium) undergoes major renovations, but ample seating space is available for personal chairs to be placed on the track area.

Delaware welcomes back 14 players with starting experience from a club that went 9-7-3 and advanced to the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. The Blue Hens have advanced to the CAA Tournament each of the last three years and a fourth straight trip is set squarely in the team's sights.

"We've had a great preseason," said Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda, the only head coach in the 25-year history of a program that played its first varsity season back in 1990. "The team worked very hard over the summer and it shows in our fitness and mental preparedness."

Among the group are six players who started 12 or more games a year ago led by senior defender Allegra Gray and junior midfielder Emily Market. Both Gray and Parker earned All-CAA honors a year ago and were named to the preseason All-CAA team was well. Delaware was picked to finish sixth in the conference in the preseason coaches poll.

"Our team always has the expectation of winning the conference," said Grzenda, who has posted 222 wins over his 24 seasons. "We need to put ourselves in the position of participating in the conference tournament and then winning the automatic bid.

"We are very excited to welcome five new freshmen to go along with our 11 sophomores and nine upperclassman," Grzenda continued. "Even though we will be young, our upperclassmen bring plenty of experience. Our experience is in our back line with Allegra, Maddie Parker, and Alison Slark all returning from great years in 2013. Allegra should compete for (CAA) defensive player of the year and we will rely heavily on her leadership. We are looking for Andi Arnold and Emily Market to anchor our midfield along with some very talented sophomores and freshmen.

"Our freshman class is very strong and all of them will compete for playing time this fall," said Grzenda. "With the loss of Shannon Kearney, we will look to Natalie Zelenky to pick up some of the slack. Rachel Vaccaro and Maddie Brosler along with our freshmen Krista Trinidad and Gina Tricocci will also need to put in a few goals. At keeper, we are very strong with senior Jess Figueroa, junior Kelsey O'Donnell, and redshirt freshman Kailyn Rekos pushing each other for the starting role (to replace Jess Levy)."

The Blue Hens will be looking to post their first-ever win over Monmouth, which owns a 5-0 all-time mark against Delaware, including a 1-0 win last year in West Long Branch, N.J. The Hawks tied a school record with 17 victories a year ago when they went 8-0-2 in league play, capturing the MAAC regular season and tournament titles and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Monmouth posted an incredible 16 shutouts on the season and eight starters return from that squad.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Soccer Gets Late Goal from Market to Down Monmouth 3-2 in Season Opener

DATE:  August 22, 2014

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women's soccer team got the 2014 athletics season off to a successful start Friday night as a goal by Emily Market with just 2:26 left to play lifted the Blue Hens to a 3-2 non-league victory over Monmouth at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.

Market, a preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association forward, snuck the ball under the hands of Monmouth goalkeeper Nicole D'Agostino from 15 yards out to break the second tie of the game and send the Blue Hens to their first season-opening win since a 7-0 victory over Delaware State in 2010.

Delaware (1-0), which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this fall since the program's first season in 1990, downed the Hawks (0-1) for the first time in six tries. Monmouth went 17-2-2 last season when it captured the MAAC title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament thanks to a school-record 16 shutouts.

"At times we played very well tonight," said Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda. "It was nice to come out and work as hard as we did and come back twice to put them away tonight. When you have 14 shots it means you've created a lot of opportunities. Emily was able to keep the ball low (on the winning shot), put pressure on the keeper, and it went in."

Delaware jumped out to a 1-0 lead on senior Rachel Vaccaro's first career goal just 18:08 into the game but Monmouth came back to tie the game on a goal by Alexa Freguletti with just under five minutes remaining in the half.

The Hens went up again 2-1 on a goal by Natalie Zelenky off a feed from Andi Arnold just 6:38 into the second half, but the Hawks answered once again when Freguletti connected on a penalty kick with 28:13 remaining.

Hen Scratchings: Market's goal was her fifth career score...Arnold dished out two assists, having also helped on Market's game-winner...Delaware sophomore goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos posted two saves and picked up the win in her first career start...Delaware returns to action Sunday at St. Francis (Pa.) at 12 noon.

SUBJECT: Boyle, Callaway, Giusti, Johnson Selected as Captains for 2014 University of Delaware Football Squad

DATE:  August 23, 2014
sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- Four standout seniors, each of whom will play a key role as the University of Delaware football squad looks to earn its first postseason berth since 2010, have been selected as captains for the 2014 season, head coach Dave Brock announced Saturday.

Tight end Nick Boyle (High Point Regional/Wantage, N.J.), linebacker Patrick Callaway (Martin Luther King/Decatur, Ga.), safety Jake Giusti (Fletcher/Neptune Beach, Fla.), and wide receiver Michael Johnson (Gainesville/Gainesville, N.J.) were selected as captains for the upcoming season from a vote of the 16 seniors on the squad and the coaching staff.

Delaware, which opens the season this Saturday, Aug. 30, at Pittsburgh, will have four captains for the first time since the 2011 team had five players serve in that leadership role. The Blue Hens also had four or more captains during the 1996 and 2008 campaigns.

"There will be a lot on each kid's table," said Brock of the captains, who will lead a young team that includes 23 true freshmen and 20 redshirt freshmen. "I think they are up to it. You want a lot of leaders on your team and a collection of guys bringing everyone together. These four know that it's more about what you do and not what you say. They have to be conscious of the example they set and that their legacy will be about whether they can make this a playoff team. They have to do it and not just talk about doing it.

"Where they can have the biggest impact is how they mentor this special group of freshmen in terms of teaching them how we do things, the expectations that are set, and holding them to those expectations," said Brock. "And of course, the obligation of good players like these four are is to play well."

Boyle, Callaway, and Johnson each earned All-Colonial Athletic Association honors a year ago while Giusti (pronounced "justy"), the only player left from that 2010 squad that advanced to the NCAA FCS title game, returns to action after missing all but three games with an injury in 2013.

Boyle earned second team All-CAA honors as a junior in 2013 when he caught 42 passes for 474 yards, averaged 11.3 yards per catch, and scored seven touchdowns, tops among league tight ends and among the national leaders. He has 64 career receptions and could break the UD mark for tight ends of 78.

"It is an honor to be named captain, especially at a school like Delaware," said Boyle, an economics major at UD. "To be nominated by your coaches and teammates speaks a lot about what they think of you. That means a lot and feels really good. The four of us are ready to get together and keep working to find ways to help us become a better team on the field, around campus, and in the community."

A fourth-year starter, Callaway was also a second team All-CAA pick in 2013 when he anchored the UD defense at middle linebacker. He led the team and ranked No. 2 in the CAA with 120 tackles, including 53 solo stops, while also recovering two fumbles, intercepting two passes, and breaking up four others. He recorded 10 or more tackles five times and ranked 18th in the NCAA with an average of 10.0 stops per game.

"I'm excited about being selected as a captain," said Callaway, a sport management major who has already earned his degree. "When I was recruited I was told I had a great chance to be captain before I left here. I'm glad I could meet those expectations. I'm looking forward to leading my teammates every day, showing them how to work hard not only in games but in practice, in the weight room, and in the training room."

Giusti has appeared in 39 career games for the Blue Hens and recorded 108 total tackles, including 78 solo stops. He played a key role for the 2010 national runner-up squad and was a part-time starter for the next three years before ending his 2013 campaign early with an injury. He also has three career fumble recoveries and 10 pass breakups.

"It is a blessing, that's for sure," said Giusti, an organizational and community leadership major at Delaware. "To become captain here at Delaware is something special. I am more of a show guy so I plan to lead by example and inspire the rest of the team to do great things."

One of the nation's most explosive multi-purpose threats, Johnson earned second team All-CAA accolades in 2013 when he caught 60 passes for 1,035 yards and nine touchdowns and averaged 17.2 yards per catch. He also carried the ball 13 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns and averaged 20.9 yards on 29 kickoff returns. For his career, he has caught 104 passes for 1,495 yards and 13 touchdowns, has scored 17 touchdowns overall, and has averaged 16.6 yards every time he touches the ball, the second highest mark in school history.

"It feels good to know that the team and the coaches look to me as a leader," said Johnson, a health behavior science major. "This is definitely something I have always wanted. I'm going to continue to work hard as a captain and show these guys that they chose the right person."

Delaware is coming off a 7-5 record in Brock's first season at the helm last fall. The Blue Hens open the season at Pitt next Saturday at 12 noon (ESPN3 broadcast) before returning for the home opener Sept. 6 vs. Delaware State at Delaware Stadium. Great season and single game tickets remain by calling 302-831-2257 or online at www.bluehens.com.

LORETTO, Pa. -- A goal by sophomore Maddie Brosler with 2:23 left in the opening half stood up the rest of the day and propelled the University of Delaware women's soccer squad to a 1-0 victory over host St. Francis (Pa.) Sunday afternoon at Degol Field.

Brosler, a forward from St. Millis, Mass. (Millis HS), made her first career goals a game-winner as she took a feed from senior co-captain Andi Arnold (Massapequa/Massapequa, N.Y.) to score the game's lone goal with time running down in the first half. Brosler's shot beat Red Flash goalkeeper Romina Kunze to the right side.

Following up to a season-opening 3-2 win over Monmouth on Friday night, the Blue Hens are now 2-0 for the first time since the 2009 campaign. St. Francis fell to 0-2 on the season after falling to St. John's 3-0 in its opener Friday.

"This has been a great weekend to learn about our team and evaluate what we need to accomplish next week," said veteran Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda, who is leading the Blue Hens during their 25th anniversary season. "The girls worked extremely hard this afternoon. We created a lot of opportunities, we just need to convert them into goals."

Delaware outshot the Red Flash by a commanding 20-10 margin. Blue Hen goalkeeper Jess Figueroa made three saves in her first start of the season to record her third career shutout.

Arnold, a senior co-captain who had just two assists in 53 career games entering the season, now has three in two games this year after helping on two goals, including the game-winner, vs. Monmouth Friday night.

The Hens will return to action this Friday, Aug. 29, when they host St. John's at 5 p.m. at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium. That game will be the opener to a doubleheader that will include the UD men hosting Sacred Heart at 7 p.m.

Sophomore Erin Layne handed out 35 assists while classmate Julia Anderson contributed 21 for Delaware, which hit an impressive .313 during the match. Fellow sophomore Taylor Hollingsworth set a career-high with 23 digs, while Swann added five blocks.

Amy Hunter paced Albany with 19 kills, while Mikala McCauley added a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs for the Great Danes.

After leading the entire way in the opening set, the Blue Hens trailed 22-18 late in the second. But Delaware rallied with five straight points to take the lead, and after UD trailed 29-28, Hillman posted three straight kills to give the Blue Hens a two-set cushion.

Albany countered with a 26-24 victory in the third set, but UD did not trail in the fourth set to close out the season-opening win.

"I thought we played well for our opening match of the season," said 13th-year Delaware head coach Bonnie Kenny. "I thought a big key was that we fought back and were really good at the end of the second set. We have five players who can terminate now, which is the biggest difference from last season."

Delaware continues action at the UD Courtyard by Marriott Invitational on Saturday when the Blue Hens take on Loyola Chicago at 1 p.m. and Rhode Island at 7 p.m.

Match Notes:
• Delaware improved to 5-8 in season openers under Bonnie Kenny
• The match was the first ever contest between the Blue Hens and Great Danes
• Katie Hillman recorded the 10th double-double of her career
• Delaware played without 2013 third team All-CAA selection Ariel Shonk, who sat out with a back injury

SUBJECT: No. 18 University of Delaware Field Hockey Blanked in Season Opener at No. 12 Stanford

DATE: August 29, 2014

STANFORD, Calif. - The season opener didn't go quite as expected for the University of Delaware field hockey squad as No. 12 Stanford shutout the No. 18 Blue Hens, 4-0, at Varsity Turf Friday evening.

The Cardinal (1-0) opened with a quick goal from Maddie Secco off a penalty corner in the sixth minute and Stanford never looked back in the game.

Lauren Becker added two goals for the Cardinal while Fran Tew also collected a score.

Stanford's Dulcie Davies held the Blue Hens (0-1) scoreless with eight saves for the win.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
"'Play and learn' is an expression we use a lot and that really sums up our season opener and game experience today. After a first half in which the team seemed to be having difficulties connecting with each other and playing as a team, the majority of the second half was a different story and a great example of how Delaware field hockey can be played. Our learning experience of the entire game and especially the quality performance in the second half today will put us in a much better position to take the next step in our team development and early season growth tomorrow versus Pacific."

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Football Has Tough Opener, Falls to Host Pittsburgh 62-0

DATE:  August 30, 2014
sws:

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- It was a tough day for the University of Delaware in its football season opener Saturday afternoon at Heinz Field as host Pittsburgh jumped out to big halftime lead and never looked back in dropping the Hens by a 62-0 verdict.

Delaware (0-1), beginning Year 2 of the Dave Brock era, had its troubles all day on both sides of the ball and suffered its first shutout loss since the 1996 season.

Pitt, a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference and the winner of last year's Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl, piled up 501 yards of total offense and took advantage of three turnovers on the way to setting a team record for most points scored in a game at Heinz Field.

The Blue Hens will look to get back to winning ways next Saturday when the Hens host in-state foe Delaware State at Delaware Stadium at 6 p.m.

"We were certainly disappointed in the way we played today," said Brock. "We were outmatched, we played poorly offensively, and we struggled to tackle bigger and stronger people. It is frustrating, but in reality its just one game. We just have to move on, take a look at what we did, work hard, and put ourselves in a position to win a football game next week against Delaware State."

Delaware, coming off a 7-5 mark a year ago, was able to manage just 64 total yards as senior quarterback Trent Hurley, who grew up just about an hour away from Pittsburgh, completed 6 of 13 passes for 19 yards and was intercepted three times and sacked twice.

On the ground, the Hens managed just 33 net yards with Jalen Randolph and Wes Hills each picking up 27 yards. The Hens converted just 1 of 11 third down opportunities, recorded five first downs, and were hurt by seven penalties for 47 yards.

Blue Hen All-American sophomore punter Eric Enderson, who ranked No. 3 in the nation last year with a school-record 45.0 yards average, was a bright spot again as he punted eight times for a 46.6 yard average.

Defensively, first-year transfer safety C.J. Jones led the Hens with a team-high seven tackles while senior linebacker David Mackall made six stops and safety Simba Gwashavanhu had four stops, a pass breakup, and a forced fumble in his collegiate debut.

In all, 21 Delaware players were making their collegiate debut, including eight true freshmen.

Running back James Conner led Pitt as he carried 14 times for 153 yards and scored four touchdowns with all four scores coming in the first half as the Panthers built a 42-0 lead. Quarterback Chad Voytik hit on 10 of 13 passes for 84 yards and two scores.

Pitt wasted little time getting on the board. After Delaware gained just four yards on opening drive, the Panthers responded with 35 yards punt return by All-American Tyler Boyd to the Delaware 41-yard line. After a 12-yard pass from Voytik to Boyd, Conner carried three straight times, taking the final run seven yards into the end zone for a score.

Boyd followed with a 12-yard scoring pass from Voytik with 2:05 left in the first quarter and Conner followed with three straight scoring runs of 8, 1, and 19 yards to put Pitt up 35-0 midway through the second quarter. A one-yard scoring run by Chris James gave Pitt a 42-0 lead at the break.

The Hens didn't fare much better in the second half as Pitt scored twice in the third quarter and capped the day's offensive show with an 18-yard scoring run by James with 4:11 left to play.

Delaware did have its chances but could never capitalize. Andrew Opoku recovered a fumble on a Pitt punt return at the Panther 42-yard line early in the second quarter, but on Delaware's first play, Hurley was intercepted by Todd Thomas at the one-yard line.

"It's a long season and this isn't going to define us," said Delaware senior safety and co-captain Jake Giusti. "We just have to come back and work hard this week and be ready for Delaware State on Saturday."

Hen Scratchings: Delaware was held without a point for the first time since a 27-0 loss to Villanova in 1996, a span of 220 games that was the longest active streak among Colonial Athletic Association teams…Hurley had a streak of 10 straight games with a touchdown pass snapped…Michael Johnson extended his pass-catching streak to 24 games as he caught a team-high four passes for 16 yards...TE Nick Boyle had an 11-game pass-catching streak snapped....the game was the first-ever between the two schools in football.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Volleyball Falls To Loyola Chicago, Rhode Island at UD Courtyard by Marriott Invitational

DATE: August 30, 2014

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team struggled to get its serving and passing attack going on Saturday as the Blue Hens dropped a pair of matches to Loyola Chicago and Rhode Island at the Bob Carpenter Center on the second day of the UD Courtyard by Marriott Invitational.

Loyola Chicago edged Delaware 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 15-6) in the Blue Hens' afternoon match, before Rhode Island recorded a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-13) triumph over UD in the final contest of the tournament.

Autumn Jenkins led Delaware with 12 kills during the match against the Ramblers, while fellow sophomore Erin Layne posted her first career double-double with 19 assists and 11 digs. Taylor Hollingsworth added 16 digs during the match, while Katie Hillman contributed eight kills and 10 digs.

The Blue Hens posted a 25-22 fourth set victory to send the match to a deciding game, but the Ramblers never trailed during the fifth set to pull out the win.

Hillman posted a team-best eight kills against the Rams, while Hollingsworth added 13 digs and Julia Anderson handed out 17 assists. However Delaware hit just .058 during the match, after hitting .105 during the afternoon contest with Loyola Chicago.

"I thought all day our lack of serving and passing dictated our play, and because of it we could not get our offense going," said Blue Hen head coach Bonnie Kenny. "I'm disappointed we weren't a little more prepared to play at home, after starting the season well last night. We had many opportunities during the afternoon match but couldn't take advantage, and we never had a chance tonight."

Hollingsworth, who led the Blue Hens with 52 digs during the weekend, represented Delaware on the All-Tournament Team.

Delaware remains home on Tuesday to host Delaware State at 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Match Notes:
• UD faced Loyola Chicago for the first time in school history, and Rhode Island for the first time since 1982
• Erin Layne's 11 digs vs. Loyola Chicago were a career high
• Delaware led for just one point during the URI match, at 1-0 in the second set
• Freshmen Sheridan Wood (2 digs) and Jess Chakonis (1 kill/1 dig) made their UD debuts vs. URI

SUBJECT: Delgado Posts Second Straight Two-Goal Game as University of Delaware Men's Soccer Shuts Out St. Bonaventure, 3-0

DATE: September 7, 2014

OLEAN, N.Y. -- Blue Hen sophomore All-American Guillermo Delgado recorded his second consecutive two-goal game as the University of Delaware men's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 3-0 shutout at St. Bonaventure Sunday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.

The Blue Hens, who improved to 4-0 on the year with three clean sheets, have won their opening four matches for the first time since the 1972 season. St. Bonaventure was playing its season opener and fell to 0-1 on the campaign.

Delgado, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year who was selected to the Hermann Award Watch List, followed up his two-goal performance during Thursday's win over Iona by putting two more in the back of the net Sunday. He opened the scoring just 8:21 into the contest, knocking home a shot from the right side just outside the box.

The Blue Hens maintained their one-goal advantage until seven minutes into the second half, when Joe Dipre scored off a feed from Kyle Bruno. Delgado then capped the scoring with just 35 seconds to play with a goal off a pass from Ignacio Martin.

Meanwhile UD goalkeeper Borja Barbero made three saves to record his third shutout of the season, as the senior has yet to allow a goal in 270 minutes of action this year.

Delaware, ranked No. 20 in this week's Top Drawer Soccer Poll and receiving votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 Poll, returns home on Wednesday to host Seton Hall at 7 p.m. at Grant Stadium.

"I'm very pleased for the lads to keep another clean sheet today," said Blue Hen head coach Ian Hennessy. "We had terrific leadership today from our senior players in managing a game in what was a difficult environment on the road. They are eager to get back to try and stretch our unbeaten run to five against Big East foe Seton Hall Wednesday."

Match Notes:
• Joe Dipre's goal was his second of the season and the 10th of his career
• Guillermo Delgado posted the fifth two-goal game of his career and notched two for the second straight year vs. St. Bonaventure
• Kyle Bruno and Ignacio Martin each posted their second assists of the year
• UD is 4-0 for just the fourth time in school history, along with the 1968, 1970 and 1972 seasons
• Delaware improved to 3-0 in school history against St. Bonaventure

SUBJECT: First State Cup Remains in Newark as University of Delaware Knocks of Delaware State 27-9 in In-State Football Matchup

DATE:  September 7, 2014
sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware had to wait a day to earn its first victory of the season, but the delay was certainly worth it.

The annual First State Cup matchup between the Blue Hens (1-1) and Delaware State (0-2) was postponed due to heavy rains and lightning Saturday evening, so the two schools located just 45 minutes away hit the field Sunday afternoon with Delaware recording a 27-9 victory at sun-splashed Delaware Stadium.

Delaware sophomore running back Jalen Randolph earned the Nate Beasley Game Most Valuable Player Award after rushing for a career-high 118 yards and two touchdowns, senior quarterback Trent Hurley hit on 17 of 21 passes for 172 yards, and junior defensive tackle Vince Hollerman led the defensive effort with three sacks as the Blue Hens improved to 6-0 all-time in the series.

"We were excited to finally play the game and excited to get the win," said Delaware head coach Dave Brock. "At this point, we need to play football games, get things on tape, and make corrections. There is an awful lot of things we need to correct as we move forward. We don't want to be a team that kicks field goals, but we did some good things and finished some drives. It felt like we were close a few times today but we need to be more consistent and more aggressive on offense. We are making strides. If we grind away one week at a time, we have the chance to be a pretty good football team when it matters most."

The Blue Hens bounced back from a tough season-opening 62-0 loss at Pitt last week as they ran up 450 total yards, allowed just 325 total yards, and recorded four sacks. Senior Michael Johnson set up two scores with long kickoff returns, set two school records, caught seven passes for 67 yards, and finished with 186 all-purpose yards, while junior Garrett Greenway added his first two career field goals. Delaware jumped out to a 23-3 halftime lead and scored on five of its first seven possessions to win going away.

In addition to remaining perfect in the series with Delaware State, the Blue Hens also won their 10th straight home opener, captured their 21st straight non-league victory at home - all by double figures - and extended their scoring streak to 205 straight games at Delaware Stadium since 1983. The Hens had an overall 220-game scoring streak that dated back to 1996 snapped in the setback at Pitt.

Johnson, one of the top all-purpose threats in the country, returned two kickoffs for 84 yards with both leading to Delaware scores. In the process, he tied the school record for most career kickoff returns (72 by Eddie Conti in 1994-98) and set the all-time UD career kickoff return yardage mark with 1,689 yards, breaking the mark of 1,683 by Rashaad Woodard in 2003-06.

Johnson returned the opening kickoff 38 yards to set up a 72-yard scoring drive that was capped by a one-yard burst by sophomore Wes Hills just 3:53 into the game. After Delaware State answered with a 26-yard field goal by Mitchell Ward early in the second quarter, the Hens reeled off 13 straight points as Randolph scored from 20 yards out with 10:53 left to cap a short drive set up by Johnson's 46-yard return, and Greenway later converted field goals from 34 and 27 yards, the second one with just one second left in the half that gave UD a 20-3 advantage at the break.

Delaware never let the Hornets get back in the game in the second half as Randolph scored on a weaving 46-yard dash on the first drive of stanza to push the lead to 27-3. DSU managed to reach the end zone on a 14-yard run by Malcolm Williams with 5:16 left to play but couldn't get closer.

"It felt good,"said Randolph on his two-touchdown performance. "We just have to keep executing and getting better each week. We have to make sure that we are doing things the best that we can. They (the two touchdowns) were the same play and the blocking was great, not a lot I had to do. They were a little different from the runs I usually have, but you always have to be happy with a touchdown."

Hen Scratchings:
• Blue Hens continue action at home next Saturday when they host Patriot League entry Colgate (0-1) for Band Day at Delaware Stadium at 6 p.m. The game is a rematch of the 2003 NCAA FCS national championship game won 40-0 by Delaware in Chattanooga, Tenn.
• True freshman Kareem Williams ran for 60 yards and Hills finished with 48 yards to help UD gain 278 total yards on the ground, the fourth highest single game total in two seasons under Brock
• Hollerman's career-high three sacks were the most by a UD player since Matt Marcorelle posted three vs. Towson in 2007
• Neither team committed a turnover and the game featured just six total penalties for 48 yards
• Williams finished with 100 yards rushing for Delaware State while Milton Williams caught four passes for 90 yards
• Delaware true freshman Donte Raymond recorded a team-high seven tackles in his first career start
• Delaware was playing on a Sunday for the first time since defeating Kent State 19-7 in the Refrigerator Bowl on Dec. 5, 1954

SUBJECT: No. 18 University of Delaware Holds Strong Against No. 2 North Carolina in 5-1 Loss

DATE: September 7, 2014

NEWARK, Del. - The score wasn't indicative of the game the University of Delaware field hockey squad played Sunday afternoon as the No. 18 Blue Hens held their own in a 5-1 loss to No. 2 North Carolina at Rullo Stadium.

The Tar Heels, who upset No. 1 Maryland Friday night, tallied just two goals in the first half as the freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) held her own with four saves against one of the toughest offenses in the nation.

UNC (4-0) eventually went up 5-0 before the Blue Hens (3-2) erased the shutout. Juniors Jacki Coveleski (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) connected once again this weekend in the 60th minute as Coveleski put a Patzner pass into the top left corner of the net.

Charlotte Craddock and Gab Major tallied two goals apiece while Emma Bozek dished out two assists for the Heels.

Oltmans finished the game with a season-best seven saves while UNC's Shannon Johnson registered three saves.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
"We've seen a huge improvement since preseason. Carolina is going to be the No. 1 team Tuesday when the new polls come out. To take it to them from time to time is really phenomenal for a very young and talented Blue Hen group. In the first half, other than the goals, our stats were pretty much the same. In the second half, aside from two five-minute spans, we played with them. We competed today and were not afraid to put it to them. Emmeline [Oltmans] played phenomenal. She kept us in the game a few times and did a tremendous job."

HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Jacki Coveleski and Michaela Patzner combined for 12 points in this weekend's contests against UNC and Richmond.
· North Carolina improves to 6-1 all-time against the Blue Hens.
· Delaware's lone losses this season have come against Top 12 ranked teams.
· UNC held a slight 3-2 advantage in penalty corners.

DATE: September 8, 2014

PHOENIX, Md. -- The University of Delaware women's golf team successfully defended its Tignanelli Towson Invitational crown while Blue Hen junior Nathalie Filler became the first medalist winner in program history during UD's 2014 season-opening tournament on Sunday and Monday.

The Blue Hens, who won three team titles last year, including the 2013 Tignanelli Towson Invitational, finished tied for first place along with the host Tigers as both squads posted a 303 score on Sunday and a 305 on Monday. Delaware won the tiebreaker, giving the Blue Hens their second straight Tignanelli Towson Invitational championship and their fourth team victory in school history.

"We are very excited to start the season with a victory," said Blue Hen head coach Patty Post. "The team fought hard all the way through 18 today. Rachel (Lee) made a huge putt for birdie on 18 for the tie, but it was a team effort all the way around. Nathalie's individual win showed her progress as a player and we are very excited for her. Towson played great both rounds and we congratulate their efforts as well."

Filler earned medalist honors at the invitational, as she followed up her opening round 75 by tying the Blue Hen single round record with a one under par 71 on the par 72, 6,162-yard course at Towson Golf & Country Club. Filler, who won the tournament by two strokes while finishing at two over par, also set a UD record with a 146 two-round score.

Blue Hen freshman Rachel Lee, competing in her first collegiate tournament, finished in third place with a five over par 74-75-149. Playing in the final group of the day, Lee knocked home a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole to pull Delaware into a tie with Towson in the team standings.

Sophomore Vitoria Teixeira, who carded a 77-77-154 during the invitational, and junior Vimonthip Benjasupawan, who fired a 76-78-154, each tied for 14th place in the individual standings at 10 over par.

Junior Andi Slane finished with a 12 over par score of 81-75-156 to tie for 23rd place, while senior and fellow co-captain Baralee Theinthong also tied for 23rd after carding a 76-80-156 for the tournament. UD sophomore Marie Bogenez, who fired a 14 over par 78-80-158, ended in a tie for 30th place.

Delaware will take the next few weeks off before competing in the Diana Thomason Invitational hosted by the University of Iowa on Oct. 4-5.

DATE: September 9, 2014

NEWARK, Del. -- Blue Hen sophomore Autumn Jenkins recorded 10 kills while junior Chandler Bryant and Jill Meyers each added nine as the University of Delaware volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over Penn Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Delaware, which won its second straight match and fourth of its last five while improving to 5-3 on the year, posted the victory by set scores of 25-22, 25-9, 25-18.

The Blue Hens hit .282 for the night with four players hitting over .300, and also held a commanding 10-2 block advantage.

Jenkins had 10 kills against just one attack error while hitting .310, while Bryant and Meyers each hit .389 while adding six blocks. Freshman Daria Robinson, the current CAA Co-Rookie of the Week, contributed four kills and four blocks on the night. Erin Layne handed out a match-high 21 assists, while Taylor Hollingsworth posted 23 digs.

Alex Caldwell had nine kills, 10 assists and eight digs for Penn, which dropped to 2-2 on the year.

After a close opening set, Delaware used kills from Bryant and Alexa Swann to put the game away and take the early lead. A 10-point run in the second set propelled the Blue Hens to a 2-0 lead, while UD used a four-point spurt to go up 7-3 in the third and never trailed again.

"Our serving was a key tonight, and allowed us to really disrupt what they wanted to do," said Blue Hen head coach Bonnie Kenny. "We were really prepared defensively and had a good gameplan, but what we were able to execute was created by our serving. Jill (Meyers) and Chandler (Bryant) were both beasts in our blocking game; 10 blocks in a three-game match is pretty good."

The Blue Hens remain home this Friday and Saturday to host three matches in the 38th Annual University of Delaware Invitational.

Match Notes:
• Jenkins recorded her fifth double digit kills match of the season
• Myers reached season-highs in kills and blocks
• Bryant's six blocks were also her most of the year
• Hollingsworth has led the Blue Hens in digs during all eight matches
• UD improved to two games over .500 for the first time this year
• Delaware snapped a two-match losing streak to Penn

SUBJECT: No. 21 University of Delaware Men's Soccer Remains Undefeated With Thrilling 3-2 Comeback Win Over Seton Hall

DATE: September 10, 2014
kmt:

NEWARK, Del. -- Blue Hen freshman Thibault Philippe and junior Joe Dipre scores 37 seconds apart midway through the second half as the No. 21 University of Delaware men's soccer team remained undefeated with a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Seton Hall Wednesday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.

Delaware improved to 5-0 on the season, and has opened the year with five consecutive wins for just the third time in school history and the first since 1970. Seton Hall, which had posted one-goal victories over the Blue Hens in each of the past two seasons, dropped to 1-1-1 on the campaign.

After the teams were knotted 1-1 at the half, the Blue Hens found themselves trailing for the first time this season after the Pirates' Kai Greene headed home a beautiful 40-yard cross from Samuel Geiler at the 61:18 mark.

However Delaware pulled even just over 10 minutes later when Philippe's 25-yard free kick deflected off the Seton Hall wall and sneaked into the left corner of the goal. Just 37 seconds later Dipre unleashed a tremendous strike from 30 yards out that dropped just under the crossbar to put the Blue Hens in front for good.

"I think tonight was the best free college entertainment you will find within 100 miles," said UD head coach Ian Hennessy, a 1990 graduate of Seton Hall. "It was a passionate contest, the goals were fantastic, and the storylines were tremendous. I'm thrilled that we were able to stay undefeated and remain in the national rankings, which is where I feel this group belongs."

Delaware opened the scoring 17:14 into the match when sophomore All-American Guillermo Delgado collected a rebound off a block and blasted a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to put the Blue Hens in front. However Seton Hall answered in the 34th minute as Victor Manosalvas headed home a cross from Mateusz Brela.

Delaware is back home on Sunday to host Saint Peter's at 1 p.m. at Grant Stadium. A victory would tie the Blue Hens for the best start in school history, matching the 1970 squad.

Match Notes:
• Delgado now leads the CAA with five goals this season
• Delgado has scored in three consecutive matches
• Goalkeeper Borja Barbero had his consecutive scoreless streak stopped at 303:02, and allowed his first two goals of the year
• Dipre scored his third goal of the year, tied for second on the team
• Philippe's goal was the first of his career
• Delaware has outscored its opponents 16-4 on the campaign

DATE: September 10, 2014

RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware golfers Nathalie Filler and Erik Dulik were named the Colonial Athletic Association Women's and Men's Golfer of the Week respectively, the conference announced on Wednesday.

Filler, a junior from Bloomfield, Conn. (Westminster School), became the first medalist winner in UD women's golf history during the Blue Hens' season-opening tournament win at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational.

She followed up her opening round 75 by tying the Blue Hen single round record with a one under par 71 on Monday on the par 72, 6,162-yard course at Towson Town & Country Club. Filler, who won the tournament by two strokes while finishing at two over par, also set a UD record with a 146 two-round score.

The Blue Hen women's squad, which successfully defended its Tignanelli Towson Invitational team crown and captured its fourth title in school history, posted a 608 two-round score and won the tiebreaker over the host Tigers.

Dulik, a freshman from Great Falls, Va. (Dominion), finished in second place after falling in a sudden death playoff during his first collegiate tournament over the weekend at the Navy Fall Classic.

He opened with an even par 71 on Saturday before firing a five under par 66 on the par 71, 6,528-yard Naval Academy Course on Sunday, finishing in a tie for first place along with Cole Berman of Georgetown. The two players then squared off in a sudden death playoff, with Berman edging Dulik to earn medalist honors.

Playing in his first collegiate tournament, Dulik tied for the third lowest round in UD history by carding the 66 on Sunday. He helped lead the men's team to a second place finish at the Navy Fall Classic, as the Blue Hens fired a two-round score of 570 to finish just one shot back of Seton Hall.

The UD men's team returns to action on Sept. 20-21 at the Cornell Fall Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y., while the Blue Hen women next compete at the Diane Thomason Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa on Oct. 4-5.

SUBJECT: Blue Hen Volleyball Defeats Manhattan, Falls to Princeton on First Day of University of Delaware Invitational

DATE: September 12, 2014

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team defeated Manhattan, 3-1, Friday afternoon before dropping a 3-2 heartbreaker to Princeton that night at the Bob Carpenter Center as the Blue Hens opened play at the 38th Annual University of Delaware Invitational.

Delaware, which is now 6-4 on the season, opened tournament play by defeating Manhattan 16-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-20, before Princeton prevailed in the evening match 25-14, 20-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-10.

Katie Hillman led the Blue Hens over the Jaspers with 15 kills and a career-high 17 digs, while Jill Meyers and Autumn Jenkins each added seven kills. Taylor Hollingsworth set her career-high by making 33 digs, while Erin Layne handed out 26 assists.

Malia McGuinness recorded 11 kills for Manhattan, which dropped to 6-2 on the year.

Jenkins paced Delaware against the Tigers with 18 kills against just four attack errors to hit .318 for the night. Meyers established a career-high with 14 kills as she hit .303 for the match, while Hillman added her second double-double of the day with 13 kills and 12 digs.

Hollingsworth again led the UD defensive effort with 25 digs, while Layne dished out 27 assists and Julia Anderson added a season-high 22 helpers.

Cara Mattaliano smashed a match-high 19 kills while Kendall Peterkin contributed 18 for Princeton, which won its second five-set match of the day and improved to 3-2 on the campaign.

"We didn't come out ready to play tonight which was a little disappointing, and that set the tone for the match," said Blue Hen head coach Bonnie Kenny. "Give credit to Princeton, they fell behind but kept coming at us. In the fifth set even though we didn't make many mistakes, we weren't aggressive enough. (Kendall) Peterkin is a really good player, and she kind of had her way with us. In the fifth set we didn't side out and they did, and that was the difference."

The University of Delaware Invitational concludes on Saturday as Princeton takes on Manhattan at 10 a.m. before the Blue Hens face George Mason at 12 noon.

Tournament Notes:
• Delaware had its three-match winning streak snapped by Princeton
• UD, which had already defeated Harvard and Penn, fell to 2-1 vs. Ivy League opponents
• Chandler Bryant had seven kills in both matches and recorded nine blocks on the day
• Katie Hillman now has 12 double-doubles for her career

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Football Mounts Big Comeback, Downs Colgate 28-25 on Last Minute Touchdown by Hurley

DATE:  September 13, 2014
sws:

NEWARK, Del. -- Quarterback Trent Hurley somersaulted into the end zone from five yards out with just 41 seconds remaining as the University of Delaware mounted a spirited comeback and defeated Colgate 28-25 in a non-league football battle Saturday night at Delaware Stadium.

Trailing 25-14 midway through the final stanza, the Hens (2-1) pulled to within 25-20 on a one-yard touchdown run by Wes Hills with 7:03 left and then tallied the game-winner as Hurley sprinted to his right, leaped into the end zone, was hit in midair, and went head over heals into the end zone for the dramatic score. Michael Johnson then ran in for the two-point conversion to seal the win.

"I just rolled out and tried to make something happen," said Hurley of the winning touchdown. "I'm a quarterback so I want to throw the ball, but I'm not afraid to run a little bit. Once I made my mind up there was no way I wasn't going to get in."

Colgate then drove inside Delaware territory on the final possession and made a desperate attempt for the end zone on the final play, laterally the ball several times before fumbling at the 30-yard to end the game, setting off a wild celebration by the Blue Hens.

"We are thrilled with the result," said Delaware head coach Dave Brock. "It was hard-fought, back and forth, and there were some challenging situations for our team. We really battled and I'm proud of the guys in our lockerroom. The guys we need to play really well for us saved their best for last. It was what we needed and what will give us a chance to have a great year. Colgate battled and played the way we thought they would. They shortened the game and limited our possessions."

The Raiders (0-2), coming off a bye week following a season-opening 30-10 loss at Ball State, seemed to have the game in hand after reeling off 16 straight points that included field goals of 40 and 32 yards by Jonah Bowman in the second quarter, a 32-yard field goal by Bowman midway through the third stanza, and a 25-yard run by quarterback Jake Melville with 2:03 left in the quarter.

The teams met for the first time since the 2003 season when Delaware downed Colgate 40-0 in the NCAA FCS national championship game in Chattanooga, Tenn. to claim the Blue Hens' sixth national title. Delaware has now defeated the Raiders in all six meetings and the Blue Hens extended their non-league home winning streak to 22 straight games dating back to the 2006 season.

Delaware took the opening kickoff and drove effortlessly down the field, completing the 75-yard drive with an eight-yard scoring pass from Hurley to senior tight end Nick Boyle. But Colgate came back to take the lead as Bowman converted a career-long 43-yard field goal - his first of a stadium-tying record four on the day - on the Raiders' first possession and James Travellin scored on a two-yard dive. Travellin's score was set up by a 75-yard interception return by linebacker Josh Diener down to the Delaware four-yard line.

The Hens regained the lead at 14-9 on another short Hurley to Boyle scoring toss with 42 seconds left in the opening quarter, but Colgate came back to take a 15-14 advantage into the break on field goals of 40 and 32 yards by Bowman.

Another 32-yard field goal by Bowman and Melville's 25-yard scoring jaunt in the third quarter increased the Colgate lead to 25-14, setting the stage for Delaware's dramatic comeback.

Colgate moved 30 yards on its first drive of the final quarter but Travellin fumbled after being hit by Patrick Callaway and David Mackall recovered at the 50-yard line. The Hens then used nine plays to score their first touchdown since the first quarter when Hills bulled his way in from one-yard out with 7:03 left.

Delaware's defense clamped down again on Colgate's next possession, forcing the Raiders to punt for the only time in the game from their own 34-yard line. Delaware's Johnson returned the punt 17 yards to the 43-yard line to set up the final drive. Hurley completed five of six passes for 48 yards during the possession before running in from five yards out for the game-winner.

Hen Scratchings
• Hurley completed 25 of 36 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 32 yards and a score.  He surpassed the 400 completion mark and 5,000 yards of total offense for his career at Delaware
• Colgate quarterback Jack Melville was 15 of 25 for 135 yards passing and led all rushers with 118 yards on the ground
• Delaware redshirt freshman Blaine Woodson recorded a team-high six tackles and had two sacks
• Johnson caught a game-high eight passes for 85 yards for Delaware and led the team with 139 all-purpose yards
• Delaware has now scored a point in 206 straight home games at Delaware Stadium since 1983
• The Hens have now won 16 straight home games in the months of August and September
• Delaware will have a bye this week followed by the Hens' Colonial Athletic Association opener Sept. 27 at rival James Madison

Last week, the Blue Hens cracked the Top 25 for the first time in program history and backed up that ranking with victories over Seton Hall and St. Peter's.
"Polls are very fluid, and with the parity in Division I soccer, can change from week to week," said University of Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. "I honestly don't feel like we are playing as a No. 11 team at the moment and firmly believe that there is much to improve upon.
"That said, I also feel it is really important to acknowledge this group and for me to praise them, because the national recognition is symbolic of what can happen if you come into preseason in shape and are mentally ready to buy into our culture," continued Hennessy. "This is also a team with some very challenging majors and whose team GPA is over a 3.0."
Delaware will next be in action this weekend as the Blue Hens head west to take on a pair of ranked Pac 12 opponents in California and Stanford. The Golden Bears are ranked No. 15 in this week's poll while the Cardinal come in at No. 24.

Since 1999, the Blue Hens are 4-10-1 against ranked teams and this weekend will mark the first time in program history that UD will face ranked opponents in back-to-back games.
In the NSCAA poll, North Carolina is ranked No. 1 followed by UCLA, Creighton, New Mexico, Notre Dame, UC-Irvine, Virginia, Washington, Louisville, Penn State, Delaware, American, Georgetown, Indiana, California, Michigan State, Marquette, George Mason, Furman, Saint Louis, Denver, Navy, Syracuse, Stanford, and UNC-Charlotte.
In the Top Drawer poll, Creighton comes in at No. 1 followed by Notre Dame, Washington, UCLA, New Mexico, North Carolina, Virginia, UC-Irvine, Georgetown, Louisville, Delaware, George Mason, Marquette, Syracuse, California, Michigan State, Stanford, Penn State, Indiana, Coastal Carolina, UMBC, Wake Forest, UNLV, American, and Campbell.
In the College Soccer News poll, North Carolina is ranked No. 1 followed by UCLA, Washington, Notre Dame, Virginia, New Mexico, UC-Irvine, Penn State, Creighton, Louisville, California, Georgetown, Michigan State, Marquette, Stanford, Delaware, Coastal Carolina, Indiana, George Mason, UNC-Charlotte, Maryland, American, Syracuse, Wake Forest, San Diego State, UC-Santa Barbara, UMBC, Furman, Navy, and Oregon State.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Women's Soccer Falls to Penn 1-0DATE: September 21, 2014
NEWARK, Del. - Despite an offensive flurry in the closing seconds of the game, the University of Delaware's women's soccer team could not capitalize on its chances Sunday as the Blue Hens lost to Penn 1-0 at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Penn midfielder Kaitlyn Moore scored on a header from a cross-field pass from Erin Mikolai to put the Quakers up 1-0 at the 39:07 mark. That goal would prove to be enough for the Quakers, but UD did not back off.
The Hens (4-5) provided themselves with numerous scoring chances in the second half but were unable to convert them into the tying goal.
Rachel Vaccaro and Mikala Kin led the team with two shots in the game, while Emily Market and Natalie Zelenky each tallied one shot.
"Today's game really came down to us not coming out with a sense of urgency," said University of Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda. "I thought we played with a sense of urgency in the second half, but we just could not get a goal."
Sunday's game was a tale of two halves for UD. Penn outshot the Blue Hens 5-0 in the first half, but the Blue Hens came out strong in the second half and outshot the Quakers 6-1 in the final 45 minutes.
Mikolai led the Quakers with two shots, while four other Penn players registered one shot on the day.
Sunday's game was the final non-conference game of the season for UD as Colonial Athletic Association contests begin next weekend.
"The first nine games really is about us finding ourselves," said Grzenda. "Next week is when everything really starts to matter. We have outplayed most of the teams we have played against this season, but it all comes down to finishing."
Delaware will open CAA play Friday against UNCW. The game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 11 ranked University of Delaware men's soccer team lost its second game in a row Sunday as the Blue Hens fell to No.24 Stanford 2-1 in the final game of its two-game West Coast swing.
After a scoreless first half, the Cardinal (5-1) drew first blood on an Eric Verso goal at the 53:43 mark to give Stanford a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Hens did not waste much time answering. Three minutes after Stanford took the lead, Ben Asante put the equalizer in the back of the net for Delaware. The goal was Asante's second goal of the season.
The Cardinal then to look the lead for good at the 65:03 mark when Corey Baird chipped the ball over UD goalkeeper Borja Barbero and into the back of the net to give the Cardinal a 2-1 lead.
"That is a completely devastated dressing room right now," said University of Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy, whose team fell to No. 15 Cal by a 4-2 score on Friday. "When you go on the road against two Top 25 teams, score three goals and have your nose ahead on just about every statistical category, you expect more than what we got."
Asante led the Blue Hens with three shots in the game, while three other UD players registered two shots each. Delaware outshot the Cardinal 14-13.
Although Delaware (6-2) was unable to notch a victory against the two highly-touted programs they played this weekend, the Blue Hens' play demonstrated that they deserve to be on the same playing field as some of the top programs in the country.
"This weekend was a great lesson for these terrific young men that the difference between us and the best boils down to a matter of moments," said Hennessy. "We are very close and our program will continue to build. We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend and thankful for the experience against two quality teams."
Delaware will next be in action Wednesday on the road against Temple. The game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
