RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware men's soccer student-athlete Ben Sampson added yet another prestigious honor to his postseason list of accolades Friday as he was named the Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's soccer.
Sampson, a junior defender from Woodbury, Minn. (Woodbury HS), was among six student-athletes who were honored for being among the best in their sports both athletically and academically for the fall sports season.
In addition to Sampson, also earning Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors were College of Charleston senior Mackenzie Johnston in men's cross country, James Madison junior Kathleen Stewart in women's cross country, Hofstra senior Jonel Boileau in field hockey, Northeastern sophomore Mackenzie Dowd in women's soccer, and Hofstra senior Kelsie Wills in volleyball.
The conference honors one Scholar-Athlete in each of its 21 championship sports. Nominees for the award must be a starter or important reserve on their team and must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25. The winners were selected by a vote of the media relations directors at each CAA institution. Five of the fall sports honorees were all-conference selections in their various sports this season and three of them have cumulative grade point averages of 3.9 or higher.
Sampson, a computer engineering major with a 3.98 grade point average, has earned a host of honors after leading the Blue Hens to a 13-6-1 record, the CAA regular season title, and a berth in the CAA Tournament title game this fall for head coach Ian Hennessy. He was selected to the Capital One/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American third team after being named to the all-district first team.
He becomes the second UD player to earn conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, joining former Academic All-American Matt Haney who earned the CAA award in both 2005 and 2006.
A two-year starter, Sampson anchored a defense that allowed just 1.06 goals per game and posted seven shutouts while also scoring a goal and dishing out an assist in 2014. He has started 43 career games, led the team to 13 shutouts, and scored three goals.
Sampson is a three-time member of the CAA Academic Honor Roll, is a UD Dean's List student, conducted academic research for Delaware in the summer of 2014, and won the UD Presidential Achievement Xerox Scholarship. In addition to his academic and athletic responsibilities, he has volunteered as a youth math tutor and with the Tony Sanneh Foundation, which helps raise funds for students with brain cancer.
