SUBJECT: University of Delaware Standout Ben Sampson Named CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Men's Soccer

DATE:  December 19, 2014

RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware men's soccer student-athlete Ben Sampson added yet another prestigious honor to his postseason list of accolades Friday as he was named the Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's soccer.

Sampson, a junior defender from Woodbury, Minn. (Woodbury HS), was among six student-athletes who were honored for being among the best in their sports both athletically and academically for the fall sports season.

In addition to Sampson, also earning Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors were College of Charleston senior Mackenzie Johnston in men's cross country, James Madison junior Kathleen Stewart in women's cross country, Hofstra senior Jonel Boileau in field hockey, Northeastern sophomore Mackenzie Dowd in women's soccer, and Hofstra senior Kelsie Wills in volleyball.

The conference honors one Scholar-Athlete in each of its 21 championship sports. Nominees for the award must be a starter or important reserve on their team and must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25. The winners were selected by a vote of the media relations directors at each CAA institution. Five of the fall sports honorees were all-conference selections in their various sports this season and three of them have cumulative grade point averages of 3.9 or higher.

Sampson, a computer engineering major with a 3.98 grade point average, has earned a host of honors after leading the Blue Hens to a 13-6-1 record, the CAA regular season title, and a berth in the CAA Tournament title game this fall for head coach Ian Hennessy. He was selected to the Capital One/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American third team after being named to the all-district first team.

He becomes the second UD player to earn conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, joining former Academic All-American Matt Haney who earned the CAA award in both 2005 and 2006.

A two-year starter, Sampson anchored a defense that allowed just 1.06 goals per game and posted seven shutouts while also scoring a goal and dishing out an assist in 2014. He has started 43 career games, led the team to 13 shutouts, and scored three goals.

Sampson is a three-time member of the CAA Academic Honor Roll, is a UD Dean's List student, conducted academic research for Delaware in the summer of 2014, and won the UD Presidential Achievement Xerox Scholarship. In addition to his academic and athletic responsibilities, he has volunteered as a youth math tutor and with the Tony Sanneh Foundation, which helps raise funds for students with brain cancer.

SUBJECT: ECAC Recognizes University of Delaware's Esmée Peet as Second Team All-Star for Field Hockey

DATE: December 19, 2014

DANBURY, Conn. - The Eastern College Athletic Association (ECAC) announced its 2014 Division I Field Hockey All-Star teams recently and University of Delaware sophomore Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) was named to the second team for the second consecutive year.

The ECAC honors joined a long list for Peet this season, who was also named a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) second team All-American and Colonial Athletic Association first team selection after leading the Blue Hens to their second straight CAA Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance.

Peet finished second on the UD squad and sixth in the league with 27 points off 11 goals and five assists. The midfielder earned CAA All-Tournament honors after posting a goal in the finals against James Madison.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Football Places League-High 28 Players on CAA Academic All-Conference Team

DATE:  March 19, 2015

RICHMOND, Va. -- The hard work in the classroom by members of the University of Delaware football squad was recognized Thursday as the Blue Hens placed a league-high 28 student-athletes on the Colonial Athletic Association Academic All-Conference Team.

To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must have earned a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average through the Fall, 2014 semester for their careers at the school.

A total of 205 student-athletes from the 12 CAA football schools were recognized on the team with Delaware's total of 28 leading all institutions. New Hampshire had 23 players honored followed by James Madison and Villanova each with 20.

The 28 players marks the highest number of Delaware players honored by the CAA since the league began in 2007 and is the first time that Delaware has led the league with the highest number of honorees. Additionally, the 28 student-athletes honored makes up nearly 30 percent of the 2014 team roster.

"We are very proud of our 28 student-athletes who were chosen as CAA Academic All-Stars," said Delaware head coach Dave Brock. "These young men are great representatives of Delaware football in all areas. We are extremely excited that we had the highest number of award recipients in the CAA."

"We are all proud of the hard work and commitment our football student-athletes have shown in the classroom this past year and I want to congratulate the 28 that have received this CAA honor," said UD Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Eric Ziady. "In addition, I want to commend the leadership and example that Coach Brock and his staff have provided in developing an environment where our football student athletes can achieve at high levels academically, athletically, and socially."

Earning CAA Academic All-Conference honors for Delaware were the following players with their year, position, and major listed:

Derek Battle (Jr., LB, energy & environmental policy); Craig Brodsky (Jr., DB, health behavior science); Justin Burns (Sr., QB, disaster management); Richard Czeczotka (So., QB, criminal justice); Eric Enderson (So., P, criminal justice); Troy Gallen (Fr., WR, undeclared); Justin Glenn (Jr., OL, health & physical education); Nate Haase (Fr., LB, mechanical engineering); C.J. Jones (Sr., DB, fashion apparel design); Jalen Kindle (Fr.r, LB, business);

Also, Christian Marchena (Sr., OL, electrical engineering); Kevin McLaughlin (So., K, finance); John Nassib (Fr., DE, business); Bilal Nichols (Fr., DT, undeclared); Blake Rankin (So., QB, communications); Christian Portale (Fr., QB, cognitive design); Jalen Randolph (So., RB, health behavior science); Bryan Reed (Fr., OL, political science); Randall Schiccatano (Fr.r, LB, health behavior science); Tim Sheridan (Fr.r, LS, accounting);

Also, Vince Sica (Fr., WR, university studies); Justice Smith (Fr., LB, accounting); Peter Thistle (So., OL, exercise science); Ryan Torzsa (So., DB, business); Joe Walker (Fr., QB, sport management); Laith Wallschleger (Sr., DE, MBA); Tommy Wilmoth (Fr.r, LB, biology); Kyle Yocum (Fr.r, TE/HB, business).

In addition to the CAA Academic All-Conference Team, the CAA also announced that Villanova linebacker Don Cherry was named the CAA Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year from a vote of the league's sports information directors.

Delaware will open spring drills this Tuesday, March 24, and will have 14 practice days leading up to the annual Blue-White Spring Game and Fandemonium VI on Saturday, May 2, beginning at 10 a.m.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - - The top seed in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament was too much for the fourth seeded Wilmington University women's lacrosse team, 21-10, as Holy Family captured the CACC Tournament Semifinal match Saturday afternoon at Georgian Court University.
A five-goal stretch midway through the first half put the Tigers (13-3) ahead, 6-1, before the Wildcats (7-11) went into the halftime break by the same goal difference, 9-4.
The teams traded goals in the first four minutes of the second half as Megan Keffer and La'Dae Boykin tallied goals for the Wildcats, but the visitors were still down 11-6 with 26:08 to play. The Tigers then used four consecutive goals to open a 15-6 lead and put the game away.
Gabby Spalt and Keffer scored back-to-back goals to pull to within 15-8, but the Tigers scored six of the last eight goals of the game to settle on the final score.
Holy Family outshot the Wildcats, 24-8, in the first half while out-shooting them 45-24 for the game. Turnovers hurt the Wildcats, as they gave the ball away 16 times while the Tigers only turned the ball over nine times on the day. The Tigers also used an 11-3 advantage in draw controls in the first half to produce the early lead.
Sara LeBrun led the Wildcats with four goals on Saturday, upping her season total to a single season program record of 60 goals. Keffer scored twice in the second half while Boykin added two goals on the day as well. Spalt scored once while McCurry added a goal and an assist. McCurry added to her single season points record with her two points today, setting a new mark with 74 this year.
Corinne Dries made 10 saves in the first half, totaling 15 on the day. Tigers' netminder Grace Deckert made seven stops in the second half to keep the Wildcats from coming back, totaling 10 on the afternoon.
The Wildcats captured their first CACC Tournament win in program history in the CACC Quarterfinal round and advanced to the CACC Semifinals for the first time since the 2012 season.
Seven Wildcats played their final game of their career as Dries, McCurry, Keffer, Ashley Koll, Chelsie Maher, Maddie Hewitt, and Katie Spence donned the Green, Black, and White for the last time.

Sat, April 25, 2015
(Dover, Del.) – The Delaware State softball team (16-21, 10-4 MEAC) continued its winning ways in Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader, combining for 25 runs and 25 hits against the visiting Howard Bison (14-26, 8-9 MEAC) to take both games, 13-6 and 12-7.

With these victories, the Hornets extended their season-long winning streak to nine, in addition to defeating the Bison for the 11th and 12th consecutive times.

In the opener, trailing 2-0 in the first frame, the Hornets took a one-run advantage with RBI-singles by infielder Jordan Stamps and freshman Dominique Little. In the fourth, with the game now knotted at three, HU scored three runs on two hits, capped off by outfielder Deja Henderson driving in a run with a sac-fly RBI. However, DSU regained the lead later in the inning with a six-run output, headlined by a Stamps two-run RBI-double and outfielder Nkili Matthews driving in a run with a double of her own. Still leading 9-6, Delaware State put the finishing touches on its eighth consecutive win in the sixth by scoring four runs, capped off by catcher Sandy Hawthorne driving in a pair scores with a double to left.

At game’s end, outfielder Nicole Gazzola, Stamps, infielder Danielle Velez and Little all tallied two hits, while Stamps finished with a game-high four RBI. Gazzola, who also stole two bases, scored a game-high three runs and extended her hit streak to a season-high 12 games. In the circle, reigning MEAC Pitcher of the Week Tara Tursellino (11-14), recorded seven strikeouts, despite allowing nine hits and five walks in the winning effort.

Game two, meanwhile, started off with a bang, beginning with DSU freshman sensation Vanessa Washington (8), who was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for the second straight time on Monday, connecting for a two-run homer in the first inning. In the following frame with the bases loaded, HU leadoff man Al’Asia Davis (2) connected for a two-out home run over the right field fence off starter Jessica Shalongo (5-7). Coming in, Davis led the conference in runs (42) and doubles (17), while sitting second in batting (.446), on-base percentage (.551) and hits (50).

After DSU cut the deficit to one in the third with a Washington sac-fly RBI, the Hornets exploded for six runs on five hits with the help of two HU errors, as infielder Chloe Oro (single) and Hawthorne (single) drove in two scores each. The Bison answered in the following frame with a three-run output to make it a 9-7 ball game, highlighted by a Jasmine Gammons two-run RBI-double. Nevertheless, Delaware State answered with Hawthorne (2), who was named MEAC Player of the Week on Monday, hitting a two-run bomb to center, followed by Little driving in Velez from second with a single up the middle during the sixth to put the Hornets up by five.

When the two squads shook hands, every Hornet in the starting lineup record a hit, led by Hawthorne going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Oro and Stamps, meanwhile, tallied two hits, whereas Gazzola pushed her hitting streak to 13 with a 1-for-5 effort. Pitching wise, Shalongo picked up the victory, despite allowing 11 hits, seven earned runs and two walks in four innings of work. Replacing Shalongo was Tursellino (1), who recorded her first save of the season surrendering two hits, no runs and fanning two HU batters.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will aim for the series sweep tomorrow at 12 p.m.

Sun, April 26, 2015
(Dover, Del.) – Sunday afternoon, the Delaware State softball team (17-21, 11-4 MEAC) pulled out a 4-0 win over the visiting Howard Bison (14-27, 8-10 MEAC) to secure its third consecutive series sweep over a MEAC opponent, led by the play of freshmen Vanessa Washington, Dominique Little and Khaliyah Flournory.

With this victory, the Hornets extended their season-long winning streak to 10 games, surpassing last season’s consecutive win total (9). DSU also defeated Howard for the 13th straight time, including 14 out of the last 15 meetings.

Washington, who was named MEAC Rookie of the Week on Monday for the second straight time, put the Hornets ahead 2-0 with a pair of RBI-singles in the first and third innings, whereas Flournory (1) blasted a two-run bomb off starter Alex Flynn (6-8) in the fourth. Little, meanwhile, went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Also at the plate, outfielder Nicole Gazzola went 1-for-3 to extend her hit streak to a season-high 14 games.

Securing her third shutout victory of the season was sophomore Tara Tursellino (12-14), who despite allowing nine HU hits, surrendered no walks and tallied three strikeouts. Howard, on the other hand, stranded eight batters on the bag in its seventh shutout loss of the year.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will close out the regular season at home this weekend against the UMES Hawks. Last season, Delaware State took all three games against the Hawks on the road, capped off by an 8-4 eight-inning win to secure a share of the MEAC Northern division title.

Fri, May 01, 2015
Dover, Del. (May 1, 2015) --- Delaware State faces UMES in its final 2015 regular season series this weekend at Soldier Field. The Hornets (11-10) trail the Hawks (13-8) by two games for second place in the MEAC North standings. DSU could clinch second place with a sweep in the series. The Hawks need just one win this weekend to secure second place. UMES still has a chance to tie for first in the final division standings, although Norfolk State (16-5) has already clinched the No. 1 North seed for the upcoming MEAC Tournament.

This weekend also marks the final Soldier Field series for Hornets seniors Justin Allen, Bobby Brown, Zach Candeloro, Charles Dailey and David Kimbrough.

The Hawks hold a 5-1 advantage over the Hornets in their 2015 meetings. UMES swept three games from DSU on Mar. 29-30 at Soldier Field. The Hawks won two of three games between the teams on Apr. 18-19 at UMES.

Delaware State is the MEAC’s top hitting team with a .286 batting average. The Hornets also lead the league in home runs (28), home runs per game (0.74), on-base percentage (0.381), slugging percentage (.426) and runs scored (247).

Dailey has a team triple crown heading into the weekend, topping the Hornets in hitting (.377), home runs (7) and runs batted in (28).

Utility man Chris Gonzalez (so.) is tied for second on the Hornets with a .346 average. He has four homers and is second on team with 27 RBI.

Allen is also batting .346, and tops the team with five triples, 19th among all NCAA Division I players.

Infielders Cameron Onderko (.310) and Kimbrough (.307) also top the .300 mark for the Hornets this season.

DSU’s No. 1 starter Lane DeLeon (fr.) tops the Hornets with four wins (4-4) and leads all MEAC players with an 11.2 strikeout-per-nine inning ratio to rank 21st in the nation. DeLeon is second in the league with 65 strikeouts this season.

(Dover, Del.) – In the second edition of “#GetToKnowAHornet”, exclusively broadcasted on DSUHornets.com, senior forward Taylor Addison of the DSU women’s soccer team answered 10 questions, including who her favorite soccer player of all-time is and whether she prefers to shop at H&M or Forever XXI:

DSUHornets.com: What do you like to do outside of soccer?

TA: I just like hanging out with my friends… hanging out at home if I’m home with my family. Other than that, just relaxing, watching some Netflix, reading… just relaxing and chilling out.

DSUHornets.com: How would you describe your playing style?

TA: I’m definitely more on the aggressive side. I mean, I’ve never been one to be a lackadaisical or shy player, but definitely more on the strong-sided, aggressiveness.

DSUHornets.com: Who’s your favorite soccer player of all-time?

TA: Definitely Mia Hamm by far. I mean, she’s created so much great paths for females, especially in this sport. And to think, I get to play a sport that she played and mastered… she plays with aggression and grace all at the same time. So I mean definitely its Mia Hamm by far.

DSUHornets.com: Why do you wear No. 16?

TA: I honestly wear No. 16 because when I came in as a freshman, a senior on the team was 10… and I took 16 and I started with it and so I figured why not change it and keep it going.

DSUHornets.com: What do you like to listen to when preparing for a game?

TA: I do like to listen to some house music and some R&B, Hip-Hop here and there. But I kind of like listening to slow jams maybe before a game. I mean, yeah, you are supposed to be pumped before a game, but I like kind of being relaxed, you know? It is what it is (laughing).

DSUHornets.com: What is the best part about growing around the New York City area?

TA: I definitely liked the fact that I was always in a fast-paced life. I mean, I was always moving, always going. Definitely going outside being able to walk to a corner store, whereas in Dover, I really don’t have that. Definitely just always on the go, never really living the slow life. Just moving.

DSUHornets.com: Which store you prefer: H&M or Forever XXI?

TA: H&M. I kind of like their styles. I mean, I definitely feel like I get more when I go to that store, but I don’t shy away from Forever XXI either.

DSUHornets.com: How many “likes” do you average on Instagram?

TA: Around 125, I guess. I have some faithfully followers (laughing).

DSUHornets.com: What is your most memorable athletic moment as a Hornet?

TA: Coming in as a freshman and doing all that I did to receive a Great West All-Conference award. It was a great accomplishment and I look forward to hopefully doing that again.

DSUHornets.com: What are your plans after your DSU soccer playing days are over?

TA: Keep going with my education and try to find a job. But If I can play some club ball here and there, definitely. I mean, pick up soccer is always great.
