Gophers Complete B1G Comeback in Win over Purdue
After falling behind by 12 points, Minnesota rattled off five consecutive wins to turn a possible loss into a five-point victory

Four matches into Sunday’s dual between No. 17 Minnesota and Purdue, both the momentum and the scoreboard had swung completely into the Boilermakers’ favor. The visitors had won three consecutive matches – all with bonus points – and led 15-3 heading to 197 pounds. A major decision by No. 4 Brett Pfarr gave the home crowd and the Gophers a bit of life going into halftime, a spark that caught and turned to a roaring fire when Ben Morgan picked up a pin at 133 pounds in his career debut Those two wins were key in a five-match winning streak that ultimately helped the Gophers down the Boilers, 23-18.

“[Today’s result] was great. I think it was a great statement to the guys, being down and coming back. That’s what athletics is about,” said head coach J Robinson. “I told the guys at halftime, tough periods don’t make character, what they do is reveal it. I think those five guys came out and did what they had to do to win. That’s what Minnesota wrestling is about, finding a way to win.”

Though Pfarr may have started the rally for the Gophers, Morgan’s pin was undoubtedly the showstopper, igniting the crowd of 3,136 in a towering cheer. His match with Luke Welch was scoreless midway through the first period when a single-leg shot appeared like it would yield a takedown for Welch. Along the edge of the mat, Morgan went to his own back and kicked his opponent over the top, flipping Welch to his back and earning the fall at 1:29.

While Morgan’s pin did something special for the team by finishing the comeback and putting Minnesota on top for the first time since the night’s opening match, it also meant something very special for him on a personal level.

“My family, my dad and uncle, both wrestled here in college and both coached after so I’ve been coming to these meets since I was a little kid,” said Morgan. “Getting the pin and getting our team back, it’s really a dream come true … my life’s really come up to this moment, to this year. It couldn’t be a better feeling.”

Morgan’s win was the third in a run of five straight for Minnesota. That rally began with Pfarr setting a new career-high in points scored in his 25-11 major decision over Drake Stein heading into the intermission. Pfarr had set his previous high (23) in last Sunday’s contest against Rutgers.

Following the intermission, No. 9 Michael Kroells added another major decision to the Gophers’ score with a 10-2 victory over Tyler Kral. The win was the second major for Kroells’ in his last four Big Ten duals and pulled the Gophers to within four points heading to the other end of the weight spectrum at 125 pounds.

After a one-match absence from the starting lineup, Steve Polakowski returned for the Gophers and picked up his second conference win of the season, a 9-3 decision over Ben Thorton. That win inched Minnesota to within one, 15-14, heading into Morgan’s match at 133 pounds.

With the applause and cheers from Morgan’s pin still reverberating through the Sports Pavilion, No. 8 Tommy Thorn clinched the dual for Minnesota with an 8-4 decision over Danny Sabatello. Not only was the match the fifth straight win for the Gophers, it capped a run of 20 consecutive team points that flipped a 15-3 gap into a 23-15 lead and an assured victory going into the night’s final contest.

While the win was exactly what Minnesota had hoped to produce on Sunday afternoon, the dual did not begin as the Gophers planned. After a 5-4 decision for Brandon Kingsley at 157 pounds, a victory decided by the riding time point, Minnesota grapplers fell in three consecutive matches. Brad Dolezal, wrestling up a weight in his season debut, lost 11-0 to No. 7 Chad Welch at 165. Nick Wanzek fell to Jacob Morissey 18-2 at 174 before Will Balow was pinned at 184 pounds in his career debut. Those three wins accounted for all of Purdue’s points until an overtime victory for Alex Griffin over No. 9 Jake Short in the afternoon’s final match.

Full match-by-match results are available at: z.umn.edu/wrpur

Minnesota will now wrap up its Big Ten season with four road duals over the next three weekends, beginning this Friday in Iowa City when Minnesota takes on No. 2 Iowa in college wrestling’s greatest rivalry. That match will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network beginning at 8 p.m. Central.

KENT, Ohio -- The Old Dominion wrestling team (4-8, 0-3 MAC) fell to Kent State, 25-13, on the road Sunday afternoon in Kent, Ohio. The Golden Flashes picked up a fall at 285 to secure the MAC dual meet victory over ODU.

Brandon Jeske improved his winning streak to seven with a dominant 11-1 major decision over Kent State's Del Vinas to begin the dual meet. After Kent State's Mack McGuire received a forfeit at 133 to put the Golden Flashes up 6-4, All-American Chris Mecate pulled out a 3-1 OT win over Anthony Tutolo at 141. In a chippy bout at 149, No. 8 Alexander Richardson defeated Kent State's Mike DePalma, 4-2 OT, to give the Monarchs their second consecutive sudden victory decision. Kent State's second-ranked Ian Miller responded at 157 with a 14-0 major decision over Austin Eads to tie the dual meet, 10-10.

The Golden Flashes went up 16-10 after Tyler Buckwalter held on to a narrow 5-4 decision over Seldon Wright at 165 with a riding time point accounting for the difference and Jairod James picked up a 3-2 win over ODU's Brooks Climmons at 174.

At 184, fifth-ranked Jack Dechow put three points on the board for Old Dominion, as the redshirt junior from Richmond, Illinois outlasted Cole Baxter, 4-1, but Kyle Conel defeated Austin Coburn, 10-4, at 197 to put the dual out of reach.

PHILADELPHIA – Lorenzo Thomas joined an elite group of wrestlers at the University of Pennsylvania, picking up his 100th career win as the Quakers defeated Binghamton, 24-9, in an EIWA dual at The Palestra.

Thomas scored an 8-1 decision over Steven Schneider at 184 pounds to become the 11th Penn wrestler to win 100 matches during his career. Thomas is the first Quakers to reach the 100-win mark while competing mostly at 184 pounds.

After a scoreless first period, Thomas scored an escape and a takedown in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. In the third, he added four points of nearfall and almost 3:00 of riding time to reach the century mark.

The win from Thomas was one of seven in the dual meet for the Quakers who won their third consecutive dual meet to improve to 3-1 overall.

No. 17 Casey Kent improved to 17-4 this season with a 4-0 decision over Jack McKeever. An early takedown in the first period and over 2:00 of riding time from that score were the big difference in the win for Kent.

After the two teams split wins to start the dual, Penn won six straight bouts to take a commanding 24-3 lead. Marc Mastropietro started the run with a 5-1 win in sudden victory over Dylan Caruana. Mastropietro countered a Caruana shot with an upper body takedown and then added a pair of nearfall points for his second overtime win in as many matches.

After a forfeit win for C.J. Cobb at 149 pounds, No. 18 May Bethea defeated Vincent DePrez, 9-6. Bethea had four takedowns in the win. Including two in the second period which helped overcome a first period deficit.

Brooks Martino bumped up to 165 pounds with usual starter Ray Bethea out with injury. His bump was rewarded with a 6-3 decision over Anthony DePrez. Martino trailed, 3-1, midway through the match but scored a takedown before the end of the second period and another in the third for the win.

Binghamton won the final two matches, including an overtime win from Mark Tracy over freshman Robert Ng at 197 pounds. Ng had the lead after a takedown in the second period, but a rally from Tracy in the third gave him a late lead. Ng forced overtime when Tracy was called for stalling a second time with 0:16 left in regulation, but a takedown 25 seconds into overtime was the difference in a 7-5 win for Tracy. Connor Calkins snuck out a 4-3 decision over Patrik Garren with a takedown in the final 10 seconds at heavyweight to close the dual.

Penn begins Ivy League duals on January 30 at Princeton at 4 p.m. on January 31, Penn hosts Rider in The Palestra at 12 p.m.

• With one four-point nearfall Sunday, Chad Welch moved into No. 11 on Purdue’s career back points list with 143.

• Seventeen of Welch’s 23 wins this season are with bonus points … he has nine major decisions, two technical falls and six pins … eight of his nine dual victories have also been with bonus points (5 MD, 1 TF, 2 F) … he leads the team in dual points scored with 42.

• Both of Jacob Morrissey’s technical falls this season have come in Big Ten duals … two of Tanner Lynde’s four falls this season have been in Big Ten duals.

• The dual started at 157 pounds … it was the first time this season the starting weight had been drawn.

MINNEAPOLIS – The 20th-ranked Purdue wrestling team captured three of the first five bouts in commanding fashion and claimed an upset in sudden victory, but No. 23 Minnesota rallied and came from behind to win 23-18 inside the Sports Pavilion on Sunday. The Boilermakers are now 7-4 and 2-3 in Big Ten Conference duals, while the Gophers moved above .500 (7-6, 3-2 B1G).

After Minnesota took the opening bout by 1:23 of riding time, Purdue rattled off three straight victories to race out to a 15-3 lead. Seventh-ranked Chad Welch was the first with an 11-0 rout of Gopher Brad Dolezal. In typical Welch fashion, he raced out and nearly had his opponent pinned early in the match. He built a 6-0 lead through the opening period and rode out the second. The win pushed the two-time NCAA qualifier’s record to 23-3 with his fourth straight major decision.

“It was another solid performance from Chad today,” Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. “I want to see him be more aggressive about getting points. He had those six right away, but only added three in the third. He needs to continue to aggressively get his points.”

The ensuing match at 174 saw Purdue’s Jacob Morrissey respond from an early takedown by Nick Wanzek with 18 unanswered points for a technical fall in 5:00. The redshirt sophomore nearly pinned Wanzek on multiple occasions as he racked up a dozen back points through two periods.

“Morrissey’s win is something for him to build upon,” Ersland said. “He was wrestling hard when he was underneath and made him [Wanzek] pay a price of attrition when he got out. He never let up and overwhelmed him. I see Morrissey getting better; there’s improvement. He’s finding ways to get into his ties, his scoring holds, his turns and he’s finding ways to make positive situations.”

From the first whistle at 184, Tanner Lynde was on a mission. He wasted no time getting after Minnesota’s Will Balow, taking him down and getting the pin right in front of the Boilermakers’ bench at the 2:29 mark. The redshirt sophomore who hails from Delphi, Indiana, moved to 3-2 in Big Ten duals while notching career fall No. 6.

The Gophers chipped away at their deficit by stringing together five consecutive victories, including back-to-back major decisions at 197 and 285 and a pin at 133 that all but sealed the dual in their favor.

Despite the dual’s outcome already being decided, Alex Griffin closed it out at 149 with the biggest upset of his career, beating ninth-ranked Jake Short 4-2 in sudden victory.

The first five minutes of action were scoreless, thanks in part to a second-period rideout by Griffin. The Boilermaker got on the board quickly in the third with an escape, only to have Short take him down. After the takedown, time was called for Griffin to be checked for a possible concussion. He was cleared by medical staff and action resumed.

“I was frustrated [coming out of the concussion protocol], you hate to have that happen,” Griffin said. “I felt like giving him points and I knew I had to keep compete and take it one point at a time.”

Griffin returned to the down position following the concussion protocol, but a few moments later Short had to take his own time for blood.

“When he took the blood time, Coach Tanelli came out and told me the longer the match goes on that it’s more in my favor,” Griffin said. “He told me I was in a good spot, I’d get the escape and if the takedown was there to get it. He looked at me and told me to tell him I was going to win. I did and I believed it.”

And that’s exactly what happened. Although Short had eliminated the riding time Griffin had accumulated in the second period, Griffin got the escaped he needed to even the score at 2-2 and force sudden victory. Forty seconds in, the redshirt junior secured the winning takedown.

“I was excited to get the win,” Griffin said. “I don’t show a lot of emotion after wins, but that one was pretty exciting. It was nice to feel like I could compete and be able to showcase my ability.”

The stoppage of time could have swung the match in a totally different direction, but Coach Ersland liked what he saw from his 149 pounder.

“I was pleased with how Griffin responded [coming out of the concussion protocol],” Ersland said. “I thought he had composure and he jumped right back out there and put himself in a position to win. It was a good win for Griffin. It’s progress and that’s what you’re looking for when you’re in the middle of the Big Ten season.”

The conference slate continues for Purdue next weekend. The Boilermakers return to their home mat in Holloway Gymnasium on Jan. 31 to face No. 9 Ohio State at 1 p.m. ET.

Tomasello and DiJulius, both Cleveland natives, started things out with back-to-back wins and then Hunter Stieber, Jake Ryan and Bo Jordan all joined the winners circle to give the Buckeyes a commanding 21-6 edge. Myles Martin, Kenny Courts and Tavanello rounded things out with a technical fall, decision and major decision, respectively.

A HOMECOMING AT 125 AND 133
Tomasello (13-0) extended his winning streak to 31 straight matches with a 21-6 technical fall at 125 pounds to start off the afternoon. Wrestling less than a mile from his high school alma mater – Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy – Tomasello was never seriously threatened, getting three takedowns in the first period, two in the second (along with a pair of two-point near falls) and three more in the third period. It was his 20th win via bonus points over the last 31 matches.

Returning to the same gymnasium where we etched his name in the Walsh Jesuit history books, DiJulius gutted out a hard-fought 5-2 decision over Garth Yenter at 133 lbs. DiJulius (12-3) made one takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second period while along racking up over a minute of riding time. The win gave Ohio State an early 8-0 lead.

While wrestling for the Warriors, DiJulius was a four-time state finalist and three-time champion.

STIEBER PICKS UP FIRST WIN
Hunter Stieber, who made his return to the starting lineup two weeks ago vs. Michigan and missed last week’s dual vs. Nebraska, was victorious at 149 pounds with a 14-5 major decision. He was on the offensive early and often, getting three first period takedowns for a 6-2 lead, and then extended that into the second period and led 11-3 entering the final 2:00. It was Stieber’s 86th career victory and first since last year’s Big Ten Championships.

BUCKEYES WIN THE NEXT FOUR
Ohio State went four-for-four at 157, 165, 174 and 184 pounds, highlighted by a pin from Bo Jordan in 5:58 that gave the Buckeyes a 29-6 advantage. Jake Ryan moved to 13-1 on the season with a 10-6 decision over Mark Bozzo that was essentially locked up when Ryan got three first period takedowns and a reversal to start the second.

Jordan’s pin was his fourth of the year and came with 1:02 remaining the third period. He remained unbeaten (10-0) and has won seven of his 10 matches this year via bonus points. Not to be outdone, Myles Martin followed at 174 with a 19-4 technical that was clinched late in the third period on a two-point near fall. Along the way, Martin racked up six takedowns and two two-point near falls. He is 21-3 this year (3-1 in duals) with eight technical falls (second most on the team).

Kenny Courts’ 10-3 decision at 184 improved gave him a 12-6 record on the year and was highlighted by a six-point first period – one takedown and a four-point near fall. The 2015 All-American also had two escapes and a third-period takedown.

TAVANELLO CLOSES THINGS OUT
Nick Tavanello, a graduate of nearby Wadsworth High School, opened up a close match at 285 against Dimitrius Renfroe with eight third period points on two takedowns and a four-point near fall to get the fifth bonus point win of the afternoon, 13-1. Tavanello improved his 2015-16 record to 14-3 overall (5-2 duals, 2-1 Big Ten).

UP NEXT
Winners of two in a row, Ohio State hits the road next weekend for duals at No. 21 Indiana (Friday, 7 p.m.) and No. 20 Purdue (Sunday, 1 p.m.)

Cowboys Dominate No. 16 Cyclones, 38-3

STILLWATER – No. 5 Oklahoma State wrestling defeated No. 16 Iowa State on Sunday afternoon, 38-3, making it the Pokes’ largest win margin over the Cyclones since a 34-0 shutout in 1949.

The Cowboys improve to 9-2 on the season and have six wins over top-25 opponents.

"I think the team that Iowa State put out on the mat is young and developing and you hope to see a score like that against a team like this,” John Smith said. “It's easy to say and hard to do, but we did it tonight. As you saw today, we struggled a little bit offensively. Not because of effort, but they stayed in good position and were grabbing wrists to slow it down. That's not our style and I don't know if it's their style. Maybe they were outmatched and that's the way to keep the score down, but we need to continue to focus on our offense.”

Once again, No. 5 Eddie Klimara opened the dual with a win, defeating Kyle Larson with a 15-0 technical fall. With his first takedown coming midway through the first period, Klimara exposed the Cyclone wrestler for two sets of nearfall points to lead 10-0. Two more takedowns and an escape ended the match in 3:13.

“I just wanted to come out here and prove to myself that all the work that I have been doing would pay off,” Klimara said. “I wanted to go out there and put up points. Tonight, all the moves I did, I hit. I was on attack on my offense, and it felt nice to get out there and score.”

Gary Wayne Harding gave the crowd an exciting match at 133 pounds against No. 9 Earl Hall. Harding went down 4-2 after two Cyclone takedowns in the first period. Another Hall takedown in the second period gave him a 6-3 advantage over Harding, but a late takedown from the Cowboy tied up the match at 6-6 going into the final period. Harding rode Hall until the three seconds remained on the clock, giving Hall a 7-6 win and Harding just 59 seconds of riding time.

The 141-pound bout started slow, but No. 1 Dean Heil put the first points on the board in the second period with a reversal over Nathan Boston. He separated the score with a takedown late in the third period and picked up a riding time point for a 5-0 win.

At 149 pounds, Anthony Collica’s hand was raised just eight seconds into the match as No. 20 Gabe Moreno suffered a shoulder injury, giving the Pokes six team points.

Joe Smith rounded out his home debut with another win, defeating Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer. Smith earned three takedowns in the match for a 10-2 major decision. Smith now holds a 26-2 record for the year.

Alex Dieringer followed up Smith’s performance with another major decision win at 165 pounds. Top-ranked Dieringer faced No. 10 Tanner Weatherman, who he scored four takedowns on as well as a four-point nearfall. The win extends Dieringer’s win streak to 68, putting him just six wins away from matching OSU legend Mike Sheet’s win streak.

“Every time I have had a loss, or a bad match like Friday night, I’ve always gotten better from it,” Dieringer said. “It really eats me inside when I don’t get bonus points for the team or for myself, so I think not being complacent is the only way to get better.”

Kyle Crutchmer redeemed a 3-1 loss from earlier this weekend when he defeated Lelund Weatherspoon with a 5-2 decision. The No. 3 Cowboy got two first-period takedowns and a quick escape in the third to give him his 17th win of the season.

Nolan Boyd notched his second win of the weekend after a big upset over Mizzou’s fourth-ranked Willie Miklus. Boyd face Dane Prestano at 184 pounds, where the first period ended scoreless. Boyd scored a reversal to start the second period and open scoring. He later scored a takedown in the period and a full-period ride in the third for a 5-2 win.

Preston Weigel earned his first dual win on Sunday afternoon in style, taking down Marcus Harrington with a 10-0 major decision. Weigel scored a takedown in the first period and picked up two sets of back points. In the second period, he earned an escape and notched another takedown to seal the win.

At heavyweight, Austin Marsden tallied his second bonus-point win of the weekend with a fall over Quean Smith in 3:39. The Cowboy senior led the Cyclone 12-0 before the stick. He improves to 18-1 on the season.

The Pokes will take a week off from competition but will return to the mat on Feb. 5 to take on Oklahoma inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.

No. 2 Hawkeyes Control No. 11 Nebraska in Lincoln

Hawkeyes win 21-11 to extend conference win streak to 19 duals

LINCOLN, Nebraska -- The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won seven of 10 matches to defeat 11th-ranked Nebraska, 21-11, on Sunday afternoon in front of a school-record crowd of 3,952 at the Devaney Sports Complex.

Iowa improved to 13-0, 7-0 in the Big Ten and extended its conference win streak to 19. Iowa has won 17 straight Big Ten road duals.

Eight of Sunday’s 10 bouts pitted one ranked wrestler against another, and Iowa came out on top in seven of those eight matches.

Second-ranked Thomas Gilman opened the dual with an 11-4 win over No. 9 Tim Lambert at 125, and seventh-ranked Sam Stoll closed the dual with a 6-2 win against No. 18 Colin Jensen at 285.

Iowa’s five other wins were decided by two points or less.

“We want to win every match and we want it to be lopsided,” said UI head coach Tom Brands. “We left a lot of points out here, but they’re probably thinking the same thing. Today’s dual was probably a little more exciting than I would have liked.”

Third-ranked Cory Clark (133) and 12th-ranked Alex Meyer (174) won by identical 2-0 scores. Both wrestlers escaped in the second period and rode the length of the third period to earn a point for riding time. Clark topped No. 14 Eric Montoya to post his second consecutive shutout, while Meyer defeated No. 16 Micah Barnes to improve to 4-2 against ranked opponents.

Second-ranked Brandon Sorensen won a top-five matchup for the fourth time this season. Sorensen scored a takedown in the final minute of the first period and the opening minute of the third to defeat fifth-ranked Jake Sueflohn, 6-5, at 149 pounds.

Edwin Cooper, Jr. followed with his second win in a row against a ranked opponent at 157. Cooper scored a four-point move in the opening period and held on for a 7-6 win.

Nathan Burak extended his win streak to 16 with a 4-2 win at 197. Burak scored a takedown with 1:10 left in the first and added 1:12 of riding time to defeat No. 15 Aaron Studebaker.

The Huskers (9-4, 3-4) got on the board with decisions at 141 and 165 pounds, and won by fall at 184 pounds. Nebraska was deducted one team point following the 157-pound match for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Iowa returns to the mat Friday hosting Minnesota at 8 p.m. (CT) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for youth 18-years and younger. UI students and children five-years and younger are admitted free. Tickets are available at the UI Ticket Office over the phone at 800-IA-HAWKS and online at hawkeyesports.com.

NOTES: Attendance was 3,952, a Nebraska home attendance record… Hawkeyes are 7-0 in the Big Ten for the sixth time under Tom Brands… Iowa’s returning All-Americans improved to 68-1… Gilman improved to 17-0… Burak has won a career-best 17 straight matches… Burak and Gilman extended their career bests winning streaks.

Strong Outing Puts Wrestling Past Army West Point, 25-7

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel wrestling team earned a 25-7 victory over Army West Point after a strong outing on Sunday afternoon. Eight Dragons improved their individual records with wins in Drexel's second EIWA dual meet victory of the season.

Zack Fuentes started the Dragons off with an 8-2 decision over Army's Sean Badua at 125. Franco Ferraina then followed with a 9-6 win at 133 to increase Drexel's lead to 6-0 before a major decision from Kevin Devoy Jr. at 141 bumped the Dragons' advantage up to 10 points. At 149, No. 13 Matthew Cimato secured an 8-4 decision over Javier Rodriguez to put Drexel ahead, 13-0.

Army got on the board first in the 157 match, as No. 19 Russell Parsons Jr. out-matched Mike Comunale for a 16-6 major decision. However, Austin Rose, Nick Elmer, and Stephen Loiseau combined victories in the next three matches to hold Army to just four points through the first eight matches. Rose beat out Army's Andrew Mendel by a 5-3 margin at 165, while Elmer earned an 8-2 decision over Graham Ratermann at 174 and Loiseau picked up a 5-2 win over Samson Imonode at 184.

The Black Knights would score again at 197 as Bryce Barnes edged Nezar Haddad with an 11-7 decision, but then a 5-1 victory from Joey Goodhart in the heavyweight match would seal the deal for the Dragons. Drexel ultimately finished the dual with the advantage, winning by a score of 25-7.

With the victory the Dragons improve to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in EIWA action, while Army moves to 3-5, 2-2 EIWA.

The Dragons will return to action on Friday, Feb. 5 when they are set to host Sacred Heart at the Daskalakis Athletic Center starting at 7 p.m.

Terps Drop Final Dual to Rider

Rider Uses Three Bonus Point Victories to Topple Terps

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland won two of the opening three bouts and managed four wins on the day, but three bonus point victories and six total wins put visiting Rider on top 26-12 Saturday afternoon. The Broncs improve to 11-9 on the season, while Maryland wraps up its 2015-16 dual match slate 5-13.

The Maryland wrestling program honored its eight graduating seniors in a ceremony prior to the match for senior day, as Geoffrey Alexander, Shane Arechiga, Mark Colabucci, RJ De George, Derrick Evanovich, Tyler Manion, Lou Mascola and Josh Snook were recognized along with their families and friends.

Michael Beck secured his second straight win in the opening match of the day at the XFINITY Center Pavilion, this time by decision over Zach Valcare. After a second period escape, Beck avoided a takedown and got one of his own at the buzzer to carry a 3-0 lead into the third. Another late takedown from the Ellicott City, Md. native eventually sealed a 5-1 victory.

The next bout saw redshirt senior Geoffrey Alexander’s (133) undefeated dual match run come to an end Rider’s Robert Deutsch, as he lost for the first time since December 29. Alexander went behind early on a takedown in the first period, then couldn’t quite secure his own after several quality shots at the Broncs’ 133-pounder. A takedown and four-point near fall in the second opened up an 8-3 lead, and Alexander couldn’t make up the difference eventually falling 13-7.

Redshirt freshman Alfred Bannister (141) won his second sudden victory decision in three matches against Paul Kirchner, after a 2-2 tie forced overtime. Bannister remained patient in the sudden victory period, before making his move for a takedown and 4-2 win.

From there Rider took command of the match, winning the next four matches on two pins, a major decision and decision to go up 22-6. Senior Mark Colabucci (184) managed to stop the bleeding for the Terps, winning his second straight match with a 3-1 decision over Michale Fagg-Daves. Freshman Youssif Hemida (285) provided some fire for Maryland in the heavyweight match, coming from behind to defeat Mauro Correnti 6-4. Down 3-1, a third period takedown and two-point near fall made the difference for the Mamaroneck, N.Y. native, as he earned a ride time for the two-point victory.

The Terps will now shift their focus to championship season, which includes the National Collegiate Open in Geneva, OH on March 1. Maryland wrestling will then be in action at the Big Ten Tournament in Iowa City, Iowa March 5-6.

New York, N.Y. – Eric Montoya (133) and Austin Wilson (165) each won their medal-round matches during Session V of the NCAA Championships at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Nebraska is in eighth place as a team with 58 points. Penn State clinched the team title with 114 points, while Oklahoma State (89.5) and Virginia Tech (82) round out the top three.

Montoya went 1-1 on Saturday to finish fifth in his third NCAA Championships appearance (second at Nebraska). After dropping a 9-3 decision to fourth-seeded Cody Brewer of Oklahoma in the consolation semifinals, Montoya battled No. 5 seed Jordan Conaway of Penn State for fifth place.

Trailing 4-2 entering the third period, Montoya rode out Conaway and added four near fall points to win by a 7-4 margin. Montoya, who earned his first career All-America honor on Friday, finishes the season with a 29-10 record after going 5-2 at the NCAA Championships.

Wilson won his lone match in Session V to capture seventh place at 165 pounds. Wilson defeated seventh-seeded Anthony Perrotti of Rutgers for the second time this tournament. In the seventh-place bout, Wilson notched a 4-2 decision over the Scarlet Knight.

Wilson, making his fourth NCAA Championships appearance, went 4-2 over three days to earn All-America status for the first time in his career. He finishes his career with 94 wins at Nebraska.

Session VI’s finals will be televised on ESPN starting at 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET). The 184-pound final between No. 7 seed TJ Dudley and No. 1 Gabe Dean of Cornell will be the eighth match of the night.

Jackson Earns Fifth-Place Finish, All-American Honors

The junior closes his season with a 5-2 win in the fifth-place bout

Updated Brackets (PDF)

March 19, 2016

NEW YORK – Indiana wrestling junior Nate Jackson became the program's 53rd All-American, and the third in the last three seasons, after a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Jackson took the mat against Lelund Weatherspoon (Iowa State) in front of a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden, and emerged with a 5-2 decision win.

"It's a little crazy, putting the singlet in the bag and knowing that I won't take it out for a while," Jackson said, reflecting on his season and his NCAA success. "I want to thank God for the opportunity to showcase my talent in New York, in one of the best arenas in the world. I'm grateful and humbled by this experience. I came up short of my goals last season, and this season as well, but it's something good to reflect on and I'm going to use it as motivation for training this summer."

Jackson cruised through his first three matches with major decision wins against Michael Pavasko (Clarion), No. 5 Zach Brunson (Illinois), and Jadaen Bernstein (Navy) in the quarterfinals. In all three wins, Jackson didn't yield a single takedown to his opponents.

In the NCAA semifinals, Jackson faced top-ranked Bo Nickal (Penn State) in hopes of handing the freshman his second loss of the season, after dealing Nickal his only loss earlier this year in dual action. Jackson fell short by mere inches and seconds from upending Nickal for the second time this season, losing 4-3.

With two appearances under his belt, Jackson is now 6-4 at the NCAA tournament with three major decisions and his fifth-place podium finish. This year, Jackson gave up only three takedowns in his six-match campaign.

"It's crazy to think next year is my last year," Jackson reflected. "I still have a dream, and I know it's real, of becoming a national champion. But I also want our team to have some success, and I want to leave a legacy of success after next year."

Jackson: [1st] T2 | [2nd] E1, T2
Kent: [1st] E1 | [2nd] N4 | [3rd] E1, T2, RT Jackson's first match of the day was a battle for a spot in the third-place bout against Penn's Casey Kent. Jackson rallied from an early deficit to tie the bout after two periods, but ultimately fell to Kent in a 9-5 decision.

"He kind of fell victim to running away from the game plan," said Indiana head coach Duane Goldman. "He went to where that guy wrestled best, and we knew that guy was good on top. But he was feeling confident that he could take that chance, but this is the National Championships and everybody here are the top guys in the country. Unless you're confident in your strengths, you have to wrestle strategically."

Jackson took control at the end of the opening period with the bout's first takedown at the 2:45 mark. Kent escaped to halve Jackson's lead seconds before the period's conclusion.

Jackson started down in the second. Before he could escape, Kent caught the Hoosier in an adverse position and took the lead with four back points. Down, but not out, Jackson coupled an escape and a takedown to tie the bout heading into the final period.

Kent pulled away in the final two minutes with an escape and a takedown, sliding Jackson into the fifth-place bout.NCAA Wrestling Championships: Fifth-Place Match

No. 12 Nate Jackson, Indiana (35-9) vs. Lelund Weatherspoon, Iowa State (27-13)
Jackson: [1st] E1, T2 | [2nd] E1 | [3rd] RT
Weatherspoon: [1st] T2 After falling out of the third-place race in the consolation semifinals, Jackson was determined to end his season on a high note against Iowa State's Lelund Weatherspoon in the fifth-place match. Jackson gave up the first two points, but rallied with five unanswered for the decision win.

"To get his head back together, to rebound from two tough losses and go against a great opponent from Iowa State and come back from a deficit is a great testament to his growth as a wrestler, his mental toughness, and his talent," Goldman said.

Weatherspoon opened scoring with the bout's first takedown, but Jackson didn't hesitate getting to his feet. He took the lead before the first period ended with his only takedown of the bout.

Jackson started down in the second, and escaped quickly to extend his lead to 4-2. He closed out the third period in dominating fashion, starting on top and riding Weatherspoon for the entire third period. The riding time point gave Jackson a win by three points, his fourth win of the tournament.

"I was just wrestling hard," Jackson said regarding his final period. "My top game is not the best, but I know that I can hold him down, and I think I broke him a little towards the end."

Indiana Finishes 28th at NCAA Championships
With the Hoosiers' team score settled, Indiana will finish the season with a 28th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Although it isn't the finish that the Hoosiers hoped to achieve, the wrestlers and coaching staff believe a bright future is on the horizon with the returning and incoming wrestlers.

"We have some leaders that are going to emerge alongside myself and Elijah Oliver," Jackson said on the future of the team. "I think it's going to be huge for the program. I want this program to be awesome next year."

Head coach Duane Goldman, when asked about the future ahead, is optimistic about the seasons to come for Indiana's wrestling program. The Hoosiers are loaded with talent in their underclassmen, and a lot of wrestlers will aim to turn the corner next year.

"It shows we're on the move," Goldman said about the successes of the 2015-16 season. "We showed a lot of improvement in our dual meet capabilities and got some notoriety there. We had a lot of young guys step up with great seasons, even though they didn't make the NCAAs. To come in here with two guys not in the top-eight seeds and walk away with an All-American is great for Nate, and it's a reflection of our room and our program."--

NEW YORK, N.Y. – From unseeded to NCAA All-American!

Casey Kent posted a 6-2 record at the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships to finish fourth overall – and become the University of Pennsylvania’s 28th wrestling All-American.

As a team, Penn finished with 23.5 points, good for a 20th-place finish. The 23.5 points are the most by the Quakers at the NCAA Championships since scoring 28.0 at the 2007 NCAA Championships. The Top-20 finish for Penn is the Red and Blue’s first since taking 12th with 51.0 points in 2006.

Casey’s Quest …

  • Penn’s 28th NCAA All-American
  • Penn’s First All-American to Earn The Honor by Pinning His Opponent
  • Penn’s Fifth All-American at 174 Pounds; Tied For Most at Any Weight
  • Penn’s Highest-Finish at 174 Pounds at a NCAA Championships
  • Penn’s Second Unseeded All-American (Scott Giffin; 7th at 174 in 2010)
  • Penn’s Highest-Finishing Unseeded All-American
  • Tied For Most Wins by a Penn Wrestler at a NCAA Championships (Matt Valenti; 2004 and Matt Herrington; 2006)
  • Three Wins By Fall in One NCAA Championships Ties Matt Herrington (2006) for Most In One Tournament
  • 1 of 3 All-Americans Who Earned an At-Large Selection to the NCAA Championships
  • 1 of 5 Unseeded All-Americans at the 2016 NCAA Championships
  • Highest Finishing Unseeded All-American at the 2016 NCAA Championships
  • Second-Highest Finish by an Unseeded All-American at 174 Pounds in NCAA Championships History
  • Kent defeated the No. 7, 8, 12, and 16 seeds – including wins over two former All-Americans in No. 7 Walter and No. 8 Epperly.
Kent, who has one year of eligibility remaining, continued his climb with an impressive 9-5 win over Indiana’s No. 12 Nathan Jackson in the Consolation Semifinals. Kent trailed, 2-1, after one period but went to work on top as he had done throughout the tournament. Jackson chose down for the second period, and Kent worked a turn off a mat return to take a 5-2 lead. The match would enter the third period tied, 5-5, after an escape and takedown for Jackson near the end of the middle period, but a quick escape for Kent and a takedown off a cradle with 0:45 to go sealed the win over a wrestler in Jackson who had reached the semifinals.

In the Third Place match, Kent ran into the wrestler he began his tournament against – No. 8 seed Zach Epperly of Virginia Tech. Kent had earned the win way back in Thursday’s Session I, but Epperly was able to reverse the result via an 8-4 decision. Epperly scored a takedown in the first period, and added a reversal in the second after Kent was called for an illegal hold while trying to stretch Epperly out from top position. In the third, Kent tried a lat drop to get back in the match, but the attempt backfired and Epperly scored the final takedown.

From the brink of elimination to the All-American podium, unseeded Casey Kent pinned his way to becoming Penn’s 28th NCAA All-American in wrestling with a gritty performance on Day Two.

As starts to a match go, Kent might have wished he had dialed up a better one than he had in his Consolation Third Round match with Nebraska’s No. 16 Micah Barnes. Kent conceded a big move in the first period, spotting Barnes an 8-1 lead after one period – a deficit which grew to 10-3 at the conclusion of two periods.

Faced with his season coming to an end, Kent went big – throwing Barnes to his back and securing the fall at 5:30 to put himself in position for a spot on the All-American podium.

Kent racked up bonus points in all four of his matches on Day Two – including pins in three consecutive bouts.

In the Round of 12, Kent came out firing against Oklahoma’s Matt Reed, scoring a takedown in the first period and building over two minutes of riding time. With a 3-0 lead in the third period, Kent put himself in position for the fall with a whirling win of a scramble and secured his second pin of the tournament at 6:49 to land himself a spot on the podium.

In the Consolation Quarterfinals, Kent picked up right where he left off. With a 1-0 lead in the third period, Kent turned No. 7 seed Cody Walters of Ohio and picked up the fall at 5:23

Kent was picking up bonus points throughout Day Two for the Quakers. Earlier in the session, he added a second win to his national tournament resume with an 8-0 major decision over South Dakota State’s David Kocer. Kent jumped out quickly, building a 5-0 lead after the first period. A takedown in the final 20 seconds of the third period secured the major decision.

Casey Kent started his tournament with the first of his four wins over ranked opponents. He knocked off returning All-American Zach Epperly of Virginia Tech – the No. 8 seed – via a 3-2 decision in the first round. Kent rode strong in the second period, building up 1:33 of riding time before Epperly scored a reversal. Kent would escape quickly from that – and replicate the escape at the start of the third. Both quick exits kept his riding time at 1:12, and that was the difference as Epperly was unable to mount any offense in the final minute.

In the second round, Kent conceded two big moves early – a pair of six-point throws for No. 9 Chandler Rogers who would go on to counter a late lateral drop attempt from Kent into a fall at 6:59.

Mayes finishes Third as Three from @MizzouWrestling Place in Medal Round at #WrestleNYC
Lewis finishes fourth in NCAA Debut, Miklus finishes sixth

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Mizzou Wrestling redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) placed third at the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships, defeating Anthony Collica (Oklahoma State), 3-2, in the third place match. Mayes closed out the season with a remarkable 32-3 record, finishing with All-American status for the second straight season. Following the medal round session, #TigerStyle sits in sixth place with 70.5 team points.

Redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) and redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa) also placed in the medal round for Mizzou, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. Mayes and Miklus are now two-time All-Americans, the 18th and 19th in program history.

Mayes won both his matches on the day to finish third. In the consolation semifinals, Mayes scored a fall in the first period over Alec Pantaleo (Michigan) at 2:49. Mayes fell behind quick, yielding a takedown and a two-point near-fall in the first minute of the match. The two-time All-American countered, however, scoring a reversal before putting Pantaleo’s shoulders on the mat for the fall. In the third place match, Mayes avenged his quarterfinals loss to Anthony Collica (Oklahoma State), defeating the Cowboy wrestler, 3-2, finishing four places higher than his 2015 seventh place finish at 141 pounds. Mayes scored a takedown with 30 seconds remaining in the first period, then an escape to start the third period to preserve the 3-2 win.

“After the match there were so many emotions running through my mind,” said Mayes. “I just wanted to find the Mizzou fans and show them how much their support meant to me. It felt great.”

In his NCAA Tournament debut, Lewis wrestled to his No. 4 seed, placing fourth, finishing the season with a 29-6 record. Lewis advanced in the consolation semifinals after pinning Steven Rodrigues (Illinois) at 3:50 in the second period. Lewis then fell to Bo Jordan (Ohio State), 9-7, in the third place match. Lewis led Jordan, 5-4, following one period, but the Buckeye grappler scored takedowns in the second and third period for the win.

“We have some work to do for next year, sitting the bar even higher than this year,” said Lewis. “This tournament was a grind the whole way through, as a team, we want to be right up there on top next year, receiving a team trophy.”

Miklus dropped both of his brackets in the medal round, falling to Nolan Boyd (Oklahoma State), 6-0, in the consolation semifinals, and, 4-2, to Matt Miller (Navy) in the fifth place match. Miklus finishes the season with a record of 21-8, placing sixth, one slot higher than his 2015 seventh place finish.

The final session of the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships, the finals round, will take place tonight the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden. Three-time All-American junior 197-pounder J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) will wrestle in the 197-pound Championship match, seeking his second National Championship after winning the title as a freshman in 2014. ESPN will televise the event, beginning at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT.

NEW YORK CITY – The Hokies sit in third place with 82 points after the final morning session of the 2016 NCAA National Championship with only the finals remaining. After setting a new program record with six All-Americans, Tech is seeking its highest ever N! ationals finish, looking to top the previous best of eighth in 2014. The Hokies have guaranteed themselves a fourth-straight top-10 finish.

Two Hokies took home third place, redshirt senior Nick Brascetta and redshirt sophomore Zach Epperly. In his fourth trip to the championship, Nick Brascetta opened the day with a 7-4 decision over Chad Walsh of Rider to advance to the third place bout. Eighth-seeded Brascetta downed the fifth seed Dylan Palacio of Cornell, 4-1, to take home third. Brascetta becomes the second three-time All-American in program history and made four appearances at the NCAA Championship in his career, leaving Virginia Tech with a 67-18 record.

Epperly rattled off six straight wins after losing in the first round to advance to the third place match. After dispatching Lelund Weatherspoon of Iowa State for the second time this season, Epperly avenged a first round loss to Casey Kent of Penn with an 8-4 victory in the final bout. Epperly is making his second appearance on the NCAA podium, after finishing seventh last year, and earned his second All-American honors in as many years.

After defeating Austin Marsden of Oklahoma State 9-4, Ty Walz fell in sudden victory overtime to Adam Coon in the third place match. Walz bettered last year’s seventh place finish and earned his second All-American honors.

All six Hokies that advanced to Saturday’s action finished in the top six in their weight class, with Solomon Chishko, Jared Haught and David McFadden all taking sixth place. Of the six All-Americans from this year, five will be returning to next year’s squad.

The finals will start at 8 p.m. tonight and will be broadcast on ESPN. The Hokies will learn their final team rank after tonight’s matches.

Gophers Wrap Up Season at NCAAs

Both of Minnesota’s All-Americans finish their seasons with victories in the medal rounds

Minnesota wrapped up the 2015-16 season on Saturday afternoon following the penultimate session of the NCAA Championships. The team’s two All-Americans, Brett Pfarr and Michael Kroells, were the last two Gophers on the mat, each competing in the tournament’s medal rounds. Pfarr, a first-time All-American at 197 pounds, finished third, while Kroells, a two-time All-American heavyweight, finished seventh. Minnesota sits in 17th place in the team race following Session V, with 26 points. The team’s final placement will be updated following tonight’s session.

“We brought five guys to the tournament and we had two All-Americans. You have to be grateful you got those two All-Americans,” said head coach J Robinson. “But then you have to reflect on where we are and what we need to do. Obviously, we have a long way to go. We have to go back and we’re going to have to change some things. It’ll be an interesting spring.”

Pfarr wrestled twice in Saturday’s midday session, beginning with a consolation semifinal bout against Jared Haught (Virginia Tech), a match in which Pfarr built an early lead on a pair of first-period takedowns and never looked back, earning a 13-4 major decision, his third major of the tournament and team-best 18th on the season.

In the third-place match, Pfarr took on Nathan Burak (Iowa) for the third time this year, having split the first two matches with his fellow top-five wrestler. Much like their match at the Big Ten tournament, Saturday’s contest was a grind, with neither taking down the other. The difference was Pfarr’s ability to ride Burak in the second period, building up enough of an advantage to score the decisive point on riding time and take the match, 2-1. The win was Pfarr’s 40th of the year, the most for any Gopher since Jayson Ness posted 40 in the 2006-07 season.

In his lone match of the day, Kroells had the opportunity to avenge a second-round loss to Max Wessell (Lehigh) and level their season series at two wins a piece. Wessell picked up the match’s first takedown early in the opening frame, but would not score on Kroells again. The Gopher heavyweight hopped in front of Wessell, 3-2, with a takedown of his own late in the period and rode out Wessell in the second on his way to a 5-2 victory. Kroells seventh-place showing is a one-spot improvement from his first All-American finish last season. The win gave Kroells 35 for the season. Three Gophers – Pfarr, Kroells and Tommy Thorn – all won 35 or more matches this winter, the most for Minnesota since four wrestlers reached the mark in 2006-07.

Full match-by-match results are available at: z.umn.edu/wrncaa3

The final whistle of Kroells’ match not only signified the end of that contest, it marked the end of the 107th season of Golden Gopher Wrestling. Minnesota will bring back virtually its entire roster next season, along with another infusion of young talent, as it navigates the road to next year’s NCAA Championships in St. Louis.

Subject: Two-Time All-American Chris Mecate Takes Fifth at NCAAs

Video Interview with Chris Mecate

NEW YORK -- Chris Mecate put an exclamation point on his decorated wrestling career Saturday morning, downing Solomon Chishko from cross-state rival Virginia Tech, 5-3, to finish fifth at the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships before 19,147 fans at Madison Square Garden. Mecate became ODU's seventh two-time All-American and finished with a career record of 115-37, which moves him into a tie for eighth place on the school's all-time wins list.

"We are extremely proud of Chris Mecate for once again earning All-American status," head coach Steve Martin said. "After a hard-fought loss in the closing seconds of the quarters yesterday, he rebounded in a big way by pinning Abidin from Nebraska and beating Joey Ward from UNC. He has gone through a lot of adversity this season and has made so many sacrifices to compete in this weight class. He turned in a very impressive performance this weekend."

In Saturday morning's consolation semifinals, Stanford's second-seeded Joey McKenna used a first period takedown and a point for an illegal hold to down Mecate, 3-1. Later that session, despite giving up a second period reversal, Mecate notched a takedown in the final thirty seconds to break a 3-3 deadlock and claim a 5-3 win over No. 7 Chishko to earn fifth place.

As a team, the Monarchs will finish in a tie for 25th place with Northern Iowa with 17.5 points. ODU has now placed in the top 25 for three consecutive seasons.

With Mecate's fifth place finish, ODU extended its All-American count to 29. The Monarchs have now had at least one wrestler clinch All-American honors in three consecutive seasons.

Steve Martin has now coached eight NCAA Division I All-Americans and has led 54 Monarchs to the NCAA Championships.

"Aside from Mecate's impressive performance, we were really happy with the way Brandon Jeske wrestled," Martin continued. "He knocked off a returning All-American and the No. 2 seed in Joey Dance from Virginia Tech, and he was seconds away from beating another All-American in Darian Cruz from Lehigh. We were not happy with Jack Dechow's draw in the bracket. He got a pigtail and then had No. 1 seed Gabe Dean from Cornell. He battled him closer than anyone the entire tournament, but then he fell into the consolations against the returning national finalist. Jack is already refocused for next year and is ready to be on the top of the podium next season. Lastly, we felt a little short-handed without Alexander Richardson competing here for us, as we felt like he could have been in contention for a national championship."

ODU RESULTS -- DAY 2

Cons. Semi - Joey McKenna (Stanford) 27-3 won by decision over Chris Mecate (Old Dominion) 26-8 (Dec 3-1)
5th Place Match - Chris Mecate (Old Dominion) 26-8 won by decision over Solomon Chishko (Virginia Tech) 30-7 (Dec 5-3)

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The duo of Nathan Tomasello (125 lbs.) and Bo Jordan (165 lbs.) went 4-0 in Session V of the 2016 NCAA Championships to lock up third-place finishes as action continued on Saturday morning at Madison Square Garden.

Tomasello rebounded from his semifinal loss – his first setback since January of 2015 – with a dominant 10-1 major decision over Michigan’s Connor Youtsey in the consolation semifinal. Tomasello scored early on a takedown and then added four near-fall points to take a 6-0 first-period lead. A third period escape, takedown and over 3:00 of riding time gave him and the Buckeyes bonus points in the team standings.

In the third place match, Tomasello edged American’s David Terao in one of the most entertaining bouts of the championships. Tomasello scored early on a takedown and was up 3-1 before Tomasello was able to get out of a scramble that had the crowd on its feet. Leading 3-2 early in the third, Tomasello converted on what proved to be the deciding takedown. He finished his season with a 27-1 record, Big Ten title and third-place showing at the NCAA Championships.

Bo Jordan also didn’t appear to have any lingering aftereffects from his semifinal loss when he topped Virginia Tech’s David McFadden for the second time in the championships, this time by a count of 8-2. The two wrestlers were even for much of the first two period, but Jordan scored a late takedown in the second, escaped to start the third and took McFadden down again before the final buzzer sounded.

Jordan secured his second third-place finish in as many years with a entertaining 9-7 decision over fourth-seeded Danial Lewis of Missouri. Tied at 6-6 entering the third, Jordan locked up the riding time point and the wrestlers started neutral. The redshirt sophomore from Urbana then was able to take Lewis down, essentially closing out the bout by putting himself ahead by three. In his first two years wearing the Scarlet and Gray, Jordan is 43-5 with two Big Ten finals trips, two All-America honors and a pair of third-place showings.

Action concludes tonight with the championship finals beginning at 8 p.m. on ESPN. The Buckeyes have two wrestlers vying for titles – Myles Martin (174 lbs.) and Kyle Snyder (285 lbs.). Martin’s match will be the seventh of the night while Snyder’s be the 10th and final.

Burak won his consolation semifinal match, 3-1, but fell in the finals, 2-1, Saturday afternoon to finish in fourth place at 197. It is the third All-America honor of Burak’s career. He placed eighth as a sophomore in 2014 and seventh as a junior in 2015.

First All-America Honors for Both Grapplers

New York City, N.Y. — The consolation bracket competition wrapped up this afternoon at Madison Square Garden with Zane Richards and Steven Rodrigues reaching the podium. After both grapplers clinched All-American honors yesterday, Richards and Rodrigues both split their two matches today. Richards won his first bout and dropped his second to place fourth at 133-pounds, while Rodrigues finished fifth at 165-pounds with a win in his second match today.

Richards Places Fourth

After falling just short in the semifinal last night against #2 Cory Clark, Richards returned to the mat today to earn a third-place finish. The All-American began the day with a morning decision over Penn State’s Jordan Conaway. The Illini junior nabbed a takedown in the opening minute to open the scoring. From there, the two Big Ten foes had multiple scrambles throughout the remaining two periods, but nothing materialized. Winning by a 3-2 decision, Richards moved on to the third-place match.

“For us, our biggest concern was, coming off a tough semifinal loss where he got taken down at the buzzer, I knew his match this morning was going to be his toughest match,” said Coach Heffernan. “We had to make sure he got ready for that one and wasn’t feeling sorry for himself.”

His opponent for the third-place bout was defending national champion Cody Brewer of Oklahoma. Similarly, to his first match of the day, Richards opened with an early takedown. However, Brewer held the Illini 133-pounder in check for most of the remaining six plus minutes. Brewer notched two takedowns in the opening frame, and then added another one in period two. An escape and point for riding time for Brewer sealed the 9-4 decision.

“If you come in fourth, you’re good,” said Heffernan. “But, I think he’s capable of a lot more.”

Richards completes his junior season with a 27-3 overall record, a runner-up finish at Big Ten Championships two weeks ago, and his first All-America honor of his career this weekend.

Rodrigues Finishes Illini Career with 5th Place Finish

In Rodrigues’ consolation semifinal, the Illini All-American never was able to get to his offense this morning. Daniel Lewis took Rodrigues to the mat towards the end of the opening minute of action and rode him out for the remaining two minutes, adding two back points in the process. After an escape to start period two, Lewis once again got Rodrigues on the mat, this time pinning him (3:50).

In the fifth-place match, Rodrigues fell behind early after Virginia Tech’s David McFadden notched an early takedown. However, true to the wrestler he’s been for the past four years, Rodrigues showed grit and determination in battling back.

“He’s a tough guy, and that’s one thing we always knew about him,” said Coach Heffernan. “You’re going to get everything he’s got, every day in practice and every time he competes. A couple of those matches, even in overtime, didn’t really concern me so much because I knew if it came down to toughness, he was going to win.”

Trailing 3-1 early in the second period, Rodrigues went to work with two takedowns to fight his way to a 5-4 lead.

“I kind of got sloppy, wanting him to fold,” said Rodrigues. “I knew that if I got to my offense, he couldn’t keep that pace.”

After riding McFadden out for the remaining time in period two, Rodrigues padded his lead with a takedown to begin period three. A riding point by Rodrigues capped off his 8-5 decision and earning him a fifth-place finish at NCAA Championships.

“He’s a fighter, everyone at this level is good, and I knew I had to ride [him] hard,” said Rodrigues. “It was my last match and so I gave it everything I had.”

Steven Rodrigues completes his career with 89 career victories, three NCAA Championships qualifications, a third-place finish at Big Tens two weeks ago, and his first All-American honor in his home state to cap it all off.

“Once I clinched [being an All-American], and kind of got that monkey off my back, that was probably the most fun I’ve had in my wrestling career,” explained Rodrigues. “There’s probably about 500 people here from my area coming to watch me wrestle. It’s a great feeling to get my last win here.”

NEW YORK --- North Carolina junior Joey Ward scored a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Lehigh's Randy Cruz to claim seventh place in the 141-pound weight class on the final day of the 2016 NCAA Championships Saturday morning at Madison Square Garden. Ward finishes his All-America season with a record of 23-6.

After a scoreless opening period, Ward rode Cruz for the first 1:02 of the second period before the 16th-seeded Mountain Hawk escaped to take a 1-0 lead. That ride proved to be critical, however, as neither wrestler scored in the final period of regulation. With the riding time point secured to force sudden victory overtime, Ward landed the winning takedown after a tough scramble to secure his seventh-place finish.

Ward's win gave Carolina a total of 10 team points, which had the Tar Heels in a tie for 32nd overall after the morning session.

NEW YORK - All-Americans Nolan Boyd, Anthony Collica, Austin Marsden and Joe Smith wrapped up their 2016 NCAA Championships with their respective medal matches.

No. 11 seed Anthony Collica electrified the crowd at 149 pounds as he stuck Kent State’s Mike DePalma, the No. 10 seed, as the second-period buzzer sounded in the consolation semifinals. He later faced No. 3 Lavion Mayes, who he earlier defeated in a tight quarterfinals match, for third place. The two, once again, kept it a close match, but a late first-period takedown from Mayes ultimately gave him a 3-2 win. Collica finishes his junior season an NCAA fourth-place finisher with All-America honors, six wins over ranked opponents and an overall 29-9 record. The breakout season for the Cowboy will put him in the hunt for 100 career wins next season as he sits at 86-29 overall.

True freshman Joe Smith went 4-2 at his first NCAA championships to finish seventh at 157 pounds. In his final bout, he battled No. 2 seed Tommy Gant of North Carolina. Smith picked up a quick takedown in the first period and pulled even farther ahead with another takedown less than a minute later. He tallied an escape in the second period and added riding time for a 6-3 win. His seventh-place finish makes him the fifth Smith, joining his dad and OSU head coach John and uncles Lee Roy, Mark and Pat, to earn All-American status and gives the family a total of 14 top-eight finishes at the NCAA tournament.

“Of course I want to carry on the family legacy, but if I’m going to win, I going to have to do it on my own. No one else is going to do it for me,” Smith said. “That pressure is no different. They did it on their own and now I’m going to do it myself.”

Nolan Boyd shut out 10th-seeded Willie Miklus in the consolation semis at 184 pounds. Using the momentum from a first-period takedown, Boyd stayed in control, grabbing an escape and another takedown for a 6-0 win. He went on to finish fourth, the highest finish of his career, after falling to No. 13 Pete Renda in the third-place bout.

Austin Marsden, seeded fourth, fell in his first match of the day to No. 3 Ty Walz of Virginia Tech, 9-4. He ended the afternoon session, taking sixth place after a getting pinned by No. 7 Amarveer Dhesi of Oregon State in the first period. The Cowboy finishes his career as a two-time All-American heavyweight, with a career-high sixth place finish and a 108-22 overall record.

The NCAA finals, which will feature two Cowboys--Dean Heil and Alex Dieringer, will begin at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday. Fans can watch all the action live on ESPN.

Subject: UNI Wrestling: Dylan Peters Takes 6th at NCAA Championships
To: Michelle Van Dorn <michelle.vandorn@uni.edu>

CONTACT: Michelle Van Dorn (michelle.vandorn@uni.edu / (319) 290-5301)FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEstory link: http://unipanthers.com/news/2016/3/...peters-takes-sixth-at-ncaa-championships.aspx

NEW YORK CITY – UNI wrestler Dylan Peters earned his second All-American honor with a sixth-place finish Saturday.

“It’s good to be back on the podium,” he said. “It was about determination and drive. I’m trying to finish out and get through it. I am ready for the road ahead.”

After falling 6-4 to No. 15 David Terao of American, he medically forfeited his final match that gave him a shot at fifth place.

Peters took sixth at the NCAA Championships in 2014, but did not place last year. He sat out most of December and January with injury and was bumped into the consolations by the top seed Nathan Tomasello of Ohio State.

He fired back with two first-period falls to earn a chance to wrestle for third place.

“I was looking to wrestle back to third and then I re-tweak it. Now I am done and the season is over,” said Peters. “Obviously, I feel better than last year - going 0-2. It sucks that you go and ride that wave and then it’s over. Doug (Schwab) told me he had confidence in me. I bought into it 100 percent, and Mark Schwab believed in me.”

Peters suffered an injury in early December, having to injury default to Ryan Millhof of Oklahoma. He avenged that loss last night, pinning Millhof in 1 minute, 3 seconds. It was his 24th first-period fall of his career.

He now has 36 career falls, which ranks him sixth among all Panthers for most career falls. Moza Fay sits in fifth with 37 career falls.

“There was something different about last night before the Rodriguez match. The fans stood up. They were loud. Doug always has a weird grin on his face, but last night, the look in his eye just pumped me. And I felt good and ready to go.”

The junior returns as UNI’s only All-American, finishing 18-4 on the season. He is the 33rd Panther to earn at least two All-American honors.

Wrestling Awards 2016-17 Team Honors

Story Link

May 9, 2017

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head coach Duane Goldman revealed the coaches' selections for Indiana's team award winners at the Hoosiers' end-of-year banquet. The awards, selected annually by the Indiana coaching staff, provide an outline for the most impactful wrestlers both in the room and on the competition mat.

2016-17 Indiana Wrestling Team Awards
Taylor Walsh Most Falls Award – Devin Skatzka (10)
Brian Dolph Most Improved Wrestler Award – Jake Danishek
Angel Escobedo Most Courageous Wrestler – Cole Weaver
Billy Thom Leadership Award – Luke Blanton
Hoosier Pride Award – Chris Perez
Joe Dubuque Most Outstanding Wrestler – Nate Jackson
It was no surprise when Goldman announced that senior Nate Jackson (184) received the highest honor of the evening, the Joe Dubuque Most Outstanding Wrestler award. Jackson completed his second consecutive All-American season, taking eighth place at the NCAA Championships in his first season at 184 lbs. In addition, Jackson led the Hoosiers through the regular season with an unbeaten 19-0 dual meet record, the first unblemished dual season since Matt Powless (2011).

Jackson's podium finish made him Indiana's first two-time NCAA All-American since Angel Escobedo earned four consecutive honors from 2007 to 2010. He finishes a thrilling collegiate career at 107 varsity wins over four years, 60 with bonus points.

Freshman Devin Skatzka (174) was Indiana's sole winner of this year's Taylor Walsh Most Falls award, given to grapplers with nine or more varsity wins by fall in a single season. Skatzka stuck 10 opponents in his first year with the IU singlet, trailing only Jackson in total wins last season.

At one point, Skatzka pinned five opponents in a row, ending the run with a 3:38 stunner over No. 15 C.J. Brucki (Central Michigan). Skatzka finished his freshman season with a 26-13 record and his first NCAA Championships qualification.

The Brian Dolph Most Improved Wrestler Award landed in the hands of sophomore Jake Danishek (157), who achieved his first NCAA qualification after a turnaround season. As a freshman, Danishek went 15-11 with a 6-7 dual meet record; this season, he upped his win total with a 21-15 overall record while going 12-7 in dual meets and 4-5 against the Big Ten.

Danishek grabbed the conference's ninth qualifying spot with a win in sudden victory over Jake Ryan (Ohio State) at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships. The Lebanon, Ohio Native is an Academic All-Big Ten honoree with two career tournament championships.

Sophomore Cole Weaver (141) took home this year's Angel Escobedo Most Courageous Wrestler award for his inspiring comeback last season. Weaver's freshman season came to an abrupt halt in 2016 with a season-ending head injury against Ohio State. Another injury to his leg in the offseason added doubt to the prospect of a return to the mat.

But Weaver persevered and regained his strength by the second weekend of the year, making his long-awaited season debut against George Mason (11/17). From there, Weaver earned 11 wins on the year with three pins and came one match away from battling for an NCAA qualifying spot.

The last pair of awards went to Indiana's senior tandem at 149 lbs., Luke Blanton and Chris Perez. Blanton earned the Billy Thom Leadership award, while Perez secured the Hoosier Pride award.

Blanton's leadership award was well deserved. As a captain, Blanton set an example for work ethic in the room, on the mat, and in the classroom. A two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Blanton walked onto the Indiana wrestling team as a freshman and earned a scholarship by his second season, entering the starting lineup in each of his three varsity years. Blanton was also the wrestling representative for IU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Blanton ends his collegiate career with a 45-32 varsity record. His many career highlights include a weekend in the 2015-16 season with two stunning victories over top-20 wrestlers, for which he was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week.

Perez's honor, the Hoosier Pride Award, is given annually to the wrestler who "provides inspiration through sacrifice and perseverance". For the Indiana coaches and teammates, nobody fit that description better than Perez.

After joining the Hoosiers in the fall as a graduate transfer from Princeton University, Perez set a high standard in the wrestling room. Throughout Perez's career, his perseverance against a litany of injury setbacks was enough to light a fire in the hearts of teammates and fans; Perez took that to another level when he started his year on the winning path. He won nine of his first 13 matches on the year, scoring back-to-back pins after upsetting No. 18 Andrew Crone (Wisconsin) to force a dual tiebreaker in Indiana's home opener.

Perez finishes his collegiate career with a 60-46 overall record, and he continues his pursuit of both a Master's Degree in Strategic Management and a Management MBA from the Kelley School of Business.
