No. 3 NC State Bests No. 23 Duke, 34-9

January 6, 2016

DURHAM, N.C—The Duke wrestling team grabbed a trio of victories, but third-ranked NC State was too much for the No. 23 Blue Devils as the Wolfpack avenged last season’s loss with a 34-9 victory in Card Gym this evening.

Duke (0-2, 0-1 ACC) garnered wins from Mitch Finesilver, Jake Faust and Conner Hartmann against the Wolfpack, continuing their trend from this past weekend’s Southern Scuffle.

“NC State is a tough team obviously,” said head coach Glen Lanham. “We’re going to go in the hole at 125 not wrestling and at 133 we had a kid we pulled out of a redshirt season. That’s tough, but we just have to compete harder. We had a good week of practice and thought we had these guys scouted pretty good, but it just didn’t go our way tonight.”

NC State (12-0, 1-0 ACC) got off to a quick 9-0 lead after a fall at 133 and a hard-fought decision for No. 3 Kevin Jack of Duke redshirt freshman Zach Finesilver, 6-2. The Wolfpack scored bonus points in five of their matches to pull away from the Blue Devils.

Zach scored first in the bout, but Jack scored a reversal to start the second and rode out the period to build his riding time. The Wolfpack added three more points in the third period to take control en route to the 6-2 decision.

Mitch, debuting at No. 25 in the rankings this week, followed his brother with a solid 12-7 decision over Beau Donahue at 149 pounds to put Duke on the board. Donahue took the 4-2 lead in the first period, but it was all Finesilver in the second stanza as the sophomore scored eight nearfall points for the 10-4 lead after two sessions. Mitch finished strong in the third period to earn his eighth win of the year.

After NC State picked up four points from No. 6 Tommy Gantt and 157, Duke’s Jake Faust upended Lee Davis by a 5-0 decision. Tabbed 12th at 165 pounds, Faust controlled much of the match, notching takedowns in the first and second periods and dominating on top for his seventh win of the campaign.

Just like he’s done all season, fifth-ranked Hartmann cruised in his bout at 197 pounds. The fifth-year senior took down No. 17 Michael Boykin 6-0, narrowly missing picking up the major decision. Hartmann went ahead 2-0 as time expired in the first period and the match was never in doubt. Duke’s two-time All-American is 11-1 overall on the year and is 5-1 against ranked opponents.

“There’s a lot we can learn from the dual,” Lanham said. “The technique is there, we just have to compete better and that’s what we didn’t do tonight.”

The Blue Devils continue their grueling January dual schedule at the Pitt Duals Jan. 9. Duke will take on ACC foe Pittsburgh, Edinboro and Harvard with the Panthers coming first at 9 a.m. Live scoring will be available for Duke’s match versus Pittsburgh.

DURHAM, N.C. - The #3 NC State wrestling team opened ACC competition with a dominating 34-9 win at Duke Wednesday night. NC State won seven of the 10 bouts, with six of those wins being bonus point victories. The Wolfpack improves to a perfect 12-0 on the season.

The Pack started the bout with six points. Starting at 133 pounds, Jamal Morris dominated the first period and scored a pin at the 2:59 mark. The pin was Morris’ first in his Pack career.

#3 Kevin Jack then picked up a 6-3 win at 141 pounds to put the Pack up 9-0 after two bouts. Down 2-1 to start the second, Jack scored a reversal and accumulated 2:31 of ride time in the final two periods to go with a third-period takedown.

After Duke’s first win at 149, #6 Tommy Gantt improved to a perfect 13-0 on the season with a 13-4 major decision. Gantt scored all six takedowns of his match, and earned his 10th bonus point win among his 13 season wins.

Duke picked up their second win at 165 pounds, and at the intermission NC State held a 13-6 lead.

Nicky Hall picked up more bonus points for the Pack, with a 12-4 major decision at 174 pounds. After each grappler scored a first-period takedown, Hall got a four-point near-fall near the end of the period and held the lead throughout.

#15 Pete Renda made it back-to-back bonus point wins with his 17-1 tech fall win at 184 pounds. Renda locked un a couple of cradles during the bout and scored two four-point near-falls.

Duke’s third win of the night was at 197 pounds, and all three Blue Devil wins were by ranked guys against unranked NC State wrestlers.

The Pack closed the dual with back-to-back six-point wins. #1 Nick Gwiazdowski picked up another first period pin, and improves to 17-0 on the season and runs his NCAA-leading winning streak to 72 matched. Gwiazdowski’s pin was his ninth of the season. In the final bout, Duke forfeited at 125 pounds and Jamel Morris was credited with the ACC win.

NC State has now won 38 of the last 42 duals against Duke dating back to 1975. Over those last 40 years, NC State is now a perfect 22-0 in dual action at Duke. The 34 points scored against Duke are the most in the series since a 38-3 win in 2001, and are the most at Duke in a dual since a 36-0 win in 1996.

Terps Notch Trio of Wins vs. No. 21 Minnesota

Goodwin and Smith Notch First Career B1G Victories

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Redshirt sophomore Tyler Goodwin (133) and freshman Jaron Smith (184) secured their first career Big Ten dual match victories, but it was not enough as host No. 21 Minnesota bested Maryland 26-12 Friday evening. Redshirt senior Lou Masola (157) also picked up a win in Maryland’s first ever trip to the Sports Pavilion, as the Terps now slide to 3-6 (0-3 Big Ten) on the season. The Gophers improve to 5-5 (1-1 Big Ten).

The Gophers took an early lead in the fourth-ever meeting between the two schools, as Steve Polakowski sealed a 7-1 decision over redshirt freshman Michael Beck (125) in the opening match. Goodwin soon shifted the tides for the Terps, getting a 6-0 lead on Sam Brancale after the first period of the 133-pound bout.

The Gambrills, Md. native kept his momentum going into the second, gaining control of Brancale and putting him on his back at 4:27 for his first pin of the season and first victory in a Big Ten dual match. Goodwin improved to 6-2 on the year with win, while also putting his side ahead 6-3.

Maryland faced two tough battles in the ensuing 141 and 149-pound matches, with redshirt freshman Alfred Bannister and freshman Wade Hodges both going up against ranked opponents. Bannister (141) held his own early against No. 10 Tommy Thorn, before a late takedown at the buzzer had the Gopher ahead 2-0 at the end of the first period. Bannister continued to challenge redshirt freshman, before surrendering a 9-2 decision in his first match since December 5.

Hodges (149) hung tough against No. 9 Jake Short, as the two wrestlers ended the first period knotted a zero. After trading escapes, Short finally managed to bring him down, but a penalty point was awarded for locked hands to make it 3-2 and keep Hodges alive. Short came out ahead in the end, getting a series of points at the end of the third period to clinch a 6-2 decision.

Mascola (157) pulled the Terps even in his match against Brandon Kingsley, securing a 3-2 decision to tie things up 9-9. Kingsley kept Mascola in check with a wrist lock for much of the first, but the East Hanover, N.J. native eventually broke through in the second with an escape and a takedown to go up 3-0. A pair of Kingsley escapes would make things interesting down the stretch, but Mascola fended off any late attacks to get his team-leading seventh dual match victory of the season.

A Brandon Krone decision over freshman Brendan Burnham (165) and a Nick Wanzek pin vs. Josh Snook (174), put Minnesota back ahead 18-9, but Smith kept Maryland in contention with a win at 184. The Columbia, Md. product took control of his match vs. Chris Pfarr, scoring on a pair of takedowns in the first and second periods. Pfarr managed two with a reversal, but Smith countered with back points to get the 6-2 decision and his first Big Ten dual match win. (Note: Smith’s win over Jeff Koepke (Illinois) was not part of Maryland’s official conference schedule).

Minnesota clinched the match with a major decision at 197, with No. 4 Brett Pfarr winning 12-4 over redshirt freshman Garrett Wesneski. No. 7 Michael Kroells wrapped up the match with a major decision vs. freshman Youssif Hemida to give the Gophers the 26-12 victory.

The Terps will return home for their second match of the weekend when the team hosts Michigan State University at the XFINITY Center. The match is slated to start at 1:00 pm, and will be streaming live on BTN Plus.

Gophers Grab First Big Ten Victory, 26-12
Nick Wanzek’s pin at 174 pounds positioned the Gophers to pull away from the Terrapins

Nick Wanzek’s first career dual match pin blew open a tight contest between No. 21 Minnesota (5-5, 1-1) and Maryland (3-6, 0-3) on Friday night, positioning the Gophers to pull away from the Terrapins for a 26-12 victory. The win levels the Gophers record for the season, both overall and in the Big Ten, and builds momentum for the team’s trip to Nebraska this Sunday.

“I think we made some progress from last time. That’s the thing we’re looking for,” said Head Coach J Robinson. “Our guys wrestled harder. They’re learning how to focus and push through some adversity. This is good. It’ll be really good to see how we perform Sunday against Nebraska.”

Wanzek’s pin was one of four wins for the Gophers following the halftime intermission, and the first of three bonus point victories during that stretch. Those bonus points transformed a nail-biter, one in which the score was knotted at nine at halftime, into a blowout.

Wanzek’s pin came in the second period of his 174-pound match against Josh Snook. Leading 2-0 early in the second period, Wanzek scored a reversal on Snook, coming out on top with Snook’s back exposed to the mat. Waznek got his weight over Snook’s shoulder and chest and, within 10 seconds of the reversal, earned the pin and six team points for the Gophers, which tripled Minnesota’s lead from three to nine.

Brandon Krone staked the Gophers to that three point lead by breaking the deadlock coming out of the intermission with an 8-3 decision over Brendan Burnham. Krone’s victory improved his career Big Ten record to 2-0 after winning his conference debut four weeks ago.

Following Chris Pfarr’s 6-2 loss at 184 pounds, the Gophers two highest-ranked wrestlers each earned major decision to finish the dual with a flourish. First, at 197 pounds, No. 4 Brett Pfarr built an 11-4 lead through two periods before riding out Garrett Wesneski in the third period, notching the riding time point and sealing a 12-4 victory. The win is Pfarr’s fourth consecutive bonus point win in dual matches, a streak that includes three major decisions and a pin. In the night’s final match, No. 7 Michael Kroells also used a late ride out to secure the riding time point in his match against Youssif Hemida, giving him a 10-2 win.

The evening began with the career dual debut of redshirt freshman Steve Polakowski at 125 pounds. Polakowski made the most of the opportunity to join the starting lineup, winning a convincing 7-1 decision over Michael Beck to get the Gophers on the board first.

Maryland took its only lead of the dual after the next match. Tyler Goodwin, wrestling in place of ranked 133-pounder Geoffrey Alexander, pinned Sam Brancale in the second period of their match, swinging the scoreboard into Maryland’s favor, 6-3.

Minnesota evened the match and jumped back in front of the Terps with a pair of decisions at 141 and 149 pounds. First, No. 10 Tommy Thorn picked up a 9-2 decision, followed by No. 9 Jake Short’s five-point third period to knock off Wade Hodges, 6-2.

The lone ranked wrestler in Maryland’s lineup on Friday night, No. 18 Lou Mascola, eeked past Brandon Kinglsey, 3-2, in their 157-pound match. That result tied the dual at nine heading into halftime.

Full match-by-match results are available at z.umn.edu/wrmd

The win on Friday improved Minnesota’s all-time record against Maryland to 3-1, including a 2-0 record as Big Ten opponents. The win also kept Minnesota from starting the conference season 0-2, something that has not happened in more than a decade.

The Gophers will look to build on Friday’s victory with a second conference win this weekend as the team travels to Lincoln for a Sunday matinee against No. 9 Nebraska. That dual is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and will be streamed live on BTN Plus.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield improved to 2-0 in Pac-12 dual action Friday night as the Roadrunners defeated Cal Poly 26-9. The victory marked the first time since the 2008-09 season that CSU Bakersfield (5-2) has started the Pac-12 dual season with a 2-0 record.

The dual began at 125 pounds where Cal Poly’s David Gonzalez got the first takedown of the match, but CSUB’s Sergio Mendez bounced back with an 11-3 major decision. Carlos Herrera avenged an earlier season loss in the 133-pound bout when he earned a 9-5 decision over Jason DelaCruz to make it 7-0 in favor of the ‘Runners.

Ian Nickell posted CSUB’s third consecutive victory at 141 pounds when he defeated Connor Pollock 10-5. At 149, Coleman Hammond posted an escape with 1:40 to go in the third period to edge Jacob Leon 5-4. Colt Shorts got the Mustangs (1-4, 0-2 Pac-12) on the board with a 6-1 victory over AJ Fierro before intermission at 157 pounds.

Adam Fierro defeated Blake Kastl 10-3 at 165 to put the Roadrunners back on the winning track. At 174, No.7 Bryce Hammond wrestled for the first time since the Dec. 17 Stanford dual and recorded a technical fall in just 1:35 against Cal Poly’s Sohrab Movahedi.

Mitch Woods earned a shutout victory for Cal Poly (4-0) at 184 when he defeated Jesus Ambriz. For the third time this season Reuben Franklin and JT Goodwin met at 197 pounds. Franklin made it 2-for-3 on the year when he posted a technical fall (20-3) over Goodwin. The Mustangs’ Spencer Empey closed out the dual with 8-4 heavyweight victory against Matt Williams.

“The score looks good,” said CSUB head coach Mike Mendoza. “I thought we came out better in the last five matches than we did in the first five. Herrera at 133 was able to get a victory over a guy who defeated him earlier this year. How we wrestled wasn’t as sharp as I hoped.”

CSUB travels to San Francisco State on Sunday for a 1 p.m. dual. The Roadrunners return to the Icardo Center next Saturday when CSUB hosts Utah Valley at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

@IlliniWrestling Can’t Escape No. 2 Iowa, Lose 26-12

Illini Fall to 0-2 in Big Ten Play, at NIU Sunday at 1 p.m.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.— In front of a season-high crowd of 1,451 the Fighting Illini dropped their second straight match to a top-10 opponent to begin Big Ten play in 2016. Although the Orange and Blue overcome a 12-3 deficit to start the match to tie it at 12-12 heading into the 174-pound bout, Iowa reeled off four straight victories to seal the 26-12 victory at Huff Hall on Friday night.

“I think Richards was great beating a really great wrestler, a defending national finalist,” said Coach Heffernan. “Isaiah {Martinez} and Steven Rodrigues wrestled really well, and I thought Brock Ervin wrestled pretty well, but he has to learn how to finish matches.”

With the match starting at 125 pounds, the Hawkeyes sprinted out of the gate with a 22-5, first period technical fall from No.2 Thomas Gilman over Illinois’ Francis Edelen, highlighted by two four-point near falls.

The headliner bout came at 133 pounds where No. 3 Zane Richards and No. 1 Cory Clark put their perfect records on the line. Zane Richards opened the period with a takedown before Clark gained an escape point to end period one trailing the host 2-1. Starting in the down position, Clark leveled the score with an escape in period two. Richards responded with an escape of his own to go up 3-2, but Clark was awarded a penalty point in the third period to send the match into overtime. In the one-minute overtime, Richards scored a takedown against Clark to win 5-3 in sudden victory. The win evened Richard’s collegiate record against No. 1 Clark 2-2.

“It’s doing things right in the practice room, being consistent and fearless when I’m out on the mat, just knowing I’m better than {Clark}, just sticking to my stuff and I know I can beat him,” said Richards. “The score was closer than it needed to be in my opinion”

After 133 pounds required overtime, the 141 bout was equally compelling as Illinois’ Brock Ervin and Iowa’s Topher Carton exchanged blows through the first two periods, entering the decisive period tied 4-4. In the third period, Ervin and Carton remained deadlocked until a controversial call penalized Ervin for stalling, netting Iowa a 5-4 victory and 8-3 advantage in the team score.

The next three matches saw three of the nation’s top wrestlers exert their talent upon their opponent. At 149 pounds, No. 1 Brandon Sorensen (Iowa) earned a 16-4 major decision over Kyle Langenderfer with a slew of takedowns. Trailing 12-3 in the match, Illinois took their turn dominating the mat. No.1 Isaiah Martinez remained perfect for his 58th straight match, executing two four-point near falls in route to a 21-5, second-period tech fall. The technical fall matched his total (11) for all of last season and brought the Illini to within four of the visiting Hawkeyes. Senior No. 6 Steven Rodrigues completed the comeback at 165 pounds with a major decision solidified by a two-point takedown in the match’s final three seconds.

A combined nine points from Martinez and Rodrigues knotted the match at 12, but that’s all Illinois could muster against the talented Iowa grapplers. Iowa took the lead for good when No. 5 Alex Meyer earned a 24-9 technical fall over Isaac Reinemann, who was filling in for starter Zac Brunson for the second straight match. Coach Heffernan applauded Reinemann’s effort after the match:

“Isaac Reinemann deserves a lot of credit for the situation he’s in, wrestling up four weight classes and competing like he does,” said Coach Heffernan.”

Unfortunately for Reinemann and the rest of the Illini, Sammy Brooks added to the Illini deficit with a 6-1 decision over Jeff Koepke at 184 pounds. The relentless Iowa attack continued at 197 pounds when No. 5 Nathan Burak used three takedowns in period three to win 13-6, extending the Iowa lead to 23-12. The night ended with a struggle at heavyweight where Iowa’s Same Stoll outlasted Brooks Black with an escape and point for riding time to earn a 2-0 individual victory and a 26-12 team victory.

The Fighting Illini will seek to get back to their winning ways when they step outside of the Big Ten this Sunday for a match in DeKalb against the Northern Illinois’ Huskies. The dual will begin at 1 p.m. and will be aired live on http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index/_/id/2740770/illinois-vs-northern-illinois.

“Home or away, we’ve got some things to clean up,” said Hefferna. “A lot of it’s just basic stuff and decision making. Decision making we have to get better at, skill stuff we’ll keep getting better at, and then start to emphasize more details.”

Wisconsin picks up wins against two ranked Nebraska opponents

Jordan continues his best start to season with 14th-straight win

On the web: http://go.wisc.edu/88mg44

MADISON, Wis. – In its first dual in nearly a month, the Wisconsin wrestling team dropped its second-consecutive conference result on Friday, as No. 9 Nebraska took down the Badgers, 29-11, at the UW Field House.

The Cornhuskers (8-1, 2-1) now trail the all-time series, 10-7-2, and have four wins in Madison.

Despite losing seven of the 10 matches, UW (1-3, 0-2) found bright spots in Ryan Taylor, Isaac Jordan and Ricky Robertson.

The trio picked up exciting wins, including Jordan who earned his 14th-straight triumph to begin the season.

Robertson was tested the most for his win, as he was forced to use the first sudden victory round in the 174-pound match to come out on top for the 10th time this year.

The tussle did not feature its first point until the second round when Robertson escaped the grasp of Dustin Williams. At the end of the third round the score was tied at one apiece, but Robertson finished off his opponent 45 seconds into the first sudden victory round with a two-point takedown.

Taylor’s 133-pound battle included two ranked opponents, as the Badgers wrestler came in at No. 6 and Nebraska’s Eric Montoya was 13th.

The duo alternated scoring throughout the entirety of the match with Taylor gathering seven takedowns and an escape and Montoya earning six escapes. Taylor evened his record to 1-1 with the 15-6 major decision victory.

Taylor now posts a 3-0 record against Montoya. He beat the Cornhuskers wrestler twice last season, including a 3-1 win in sudden vicory-1 at the NCAA Championships.

Third-ranked Jordan continued his best start to a season by shutting out No. 15 Austin Wilson at 165 pounds for his 14th-straight win. The victory also marked Jordan’s third win against a ranked opponent.

The Nebraska wrestler kept it within four points until the 21-second mark when Jordan earned a penalty point, followed by a takedown and capped off with a riding time point.

Jordan is now 2-0 against Wilson, as he pinned the then-20th-ranked Cornhusker 32 seconds into last year’s match.

The narrowest Wisconsin defeat came in the heavyweight match, as Brock Horwath was edged, 3-2, by No. 17 Collin Jensen.

Horwath trailed, 3-0, entering the final round, lessening Jensen’s lead to just one with 15 seconds left, but was unable to earn another score before time expired.

At 125 pounds, Johnny Jimenez fell behind early on and could not dig himself out, surrendering a pin to 10th-ranked Tim Lambert at the 3:25 mark. The result noted just the second time Jimenez had been pinned all year.

Anthony Abidin proved to be too much for Luke Rowh in the 141-pound grapple, as the Nebraska wrestler won, 15-0, by technical fall.

Andrew Crone faced off against his former high school teammate and fifth-ranked 149-pounder Jake Sueflohn, losing by a score of 9-3.

In the 157-pound match, TJ Ruschell fought tough in the first round but fell off in the second round, dropping an 11-2 major decision to No. 17 Tyler Berger.

For the eighth time already this year Ryan Christensen wrestled a ranked opponent. TJ Dudley, rated fifth in the 184-pound weight class, led 4-1 after two rounds but pulled ahead late in the third with a takedown and four-point near fall to take the match, 11-2, by major decision.

Rounding out Wisconsin’s results on Friday, 197-pounder Eric Peissig lost by technical fall, 17-1, to No. 16 Aaron Studebaker.

The Badgers continue with Big Ten competition at 8 p.m. on Friday, January 15, as the team hosts Iowa at the Kohl Center.

No. 8 Rutgers Wrestling Blanks Michigan State, 34-0

Scarlet Knights dominate in first Big Ten Conference shutout

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 8, 2016) – Rutgers head wrestling coach Scott Goodale has the same goal in mind entering every match: win all 10 bouts. After Friday night’s dual the No. 8-ranked Scarlet Knights left the Rutgers Athletic Center with the mission accomplished.

“All 10 guys that we put out there won, and that’s what we wanted to do,” Goodale said following RU’s 34-0 blanking of Michigan State, the program’s first shutout in a Big Ten Conference match. “Those first three were really, really important.”

The victory guarantees Rutgers' 10th consecutive winning season and matches the team's Big Ten win total from a year ago.

Consecutive decisions from Sean McCabe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), No. 19 Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.), and No. 4 Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) from 125-141 pounds gave RU a 9-0 lead and got things going for the 3,360 fans at the RAC.

But Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, N.J.) sent a jolt into the crowd with an 18-0 tech fall, scoring 14 near fall points for his 11th win of the year.

Following the win by Dippery, the Scarlet Knights (11-2, 2-1 Big Ten) settled in with six more victories, including major decisions at 184 pounds from Anthony Pafumi (Westfield, N.J.) and No.16-ranked heavyweight Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.).

“Most of these guys have been through the Big Ten, so they know what to expect,” Goodale said. “They’ve been through the Big Ten season and the grind. That’s the biggest thing, the maturation process from all of them.”

Pafumi (7-5), wrestling up and seeing his first dual action since Nov. 21 in Corvalis, Ore., showed no signs of rust in a 15-3 win over Schwan Shadaia. After a scoreless first period Pafumi broke things open in the final four minutes of the match.

For the second consecutive B1G dual,Smith (16-5)closed out with a win, sealing a major with a takedown in the third period before winning, 11-1. The win was the 90th of his career.

Also reaching a milestone was Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) at 197 pounds. Hrymack scored a takedown after a restart with 1:19 to go in the third and rode out Joseph Cooper for the 4-2 victory – the 50th of his career.

No. 15 Richie Lewis (Toms River, N.J.) and No. 10 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) improved their impressive dual records with convincing decisions at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively.

Lewis (15-3) is now 9-1 in dual action after his 8-3 win over Joseph Johnson, while Perrotti (13-2) owns the second-best dual record at 11-1. Ashnault won his 18th match of the year to improve to a team-best 18-1 and 12-0 in dual matches.

Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) stayed consistent after a fifth-place Midlands Championships showing with an 8-3 win over Shane Shadaia. Two third-period takedowns put it away, making the Hammonton, N.J., native 11-7 on the year.

Next up for Rutgers is No. 23 Minnesota. The Scarlet Knights travel to take on the Golden Gophers (5-5, 1-1) on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. The match will stream live on BTN Plus.

“I think we can wrestle with anybody in the conference,” Goodale said. “We feel good about the schedule that’s out in front of us, but we feel good about what we did out of conference too. We feel like we can win all of them from here on out, but at the same time we have to wrestle really, really good to do that.”

No. 2 Hawkeyes Pull Away from No. 11 Illini

Hawkeyes win final four bouts to top Illini in Big Ten road opener

Champaign, Illinois -- The University of Iowa wrestling team strung together four straight wins to close out No. 11 Illinois, 26-12, Friday night at Huff Hall.

The second-ranked Hawkeyes (9-0, 3-0) and Illini (8-2, 1-2) split the first six matches and were tied 12-12 before 10th-ranked Alex Meyer put Iowa ahead for good with a 24-9 technical fall at 174. Meyer, who had scored 20 combined points over his last five matches, put together an offensive barrage of 11 takedowns to complement 3:20 of riding time.

“I was focused and concentrated through the whole match,” said Meyer. “I had my hands where I needed to be, but it can still be better and it will be better. It needs to be better.”

Meyer’s match was one of three that ended in bonus points for the Hawkeyes.

Second-ranked Thomas Gilman opened the dual with a 22-5 technical fall at 125, and second-ranked Brandon Sorensen recorded his team-best fifth major decision in a 16-4 win at 149.

Gilman turned a headlock into back points three seconds into the dual at 125, and he terminated the match by landing a cow-catcher at the end of the period leading 22-5.

“Once I hit the headlock I thought I had him stuck, but he was long and Gumby and I haven’t felt a bridge like that since middle school,” Gilman said. “I thought I’d have time to work on a fall in the second period, but I hit the cow-catcher at the end of the first and knew I had the tech.”

Sorensen scored his first takedown 1:11 into the match, and his sixth and final takedown with five seconds left in the match. He added 3:42 of riding time to improve to 15-0.

Iowa won seven matches total, getting decisions at 141, 184, 197, and 285.

Topher Carton earned his first career Big Ten road win with a 5-4 decision at 141. The wrestlers traded takedowns in the first two periods before Carton earned the decisive point when Brock Ervin was called for stalling in the final minute.

Eight-ranked Sammy Brooks fought off a late shot and countered with two of his own to finish a 6-1 win against 16th-ranked Jeff Koepke at 184. Brooks is now 4-1 against ranked opponents.

Third-ranked Nathan Burak used five takedowns to remain undefeated with a 13-6 decision at 197, and eighth-ranked Sam Stoll escaped in the second period and rode 19th-ranked Brooks Black in the third to earn a 2-0 win at 285.

Illinois record three wins, including an overtime decision at 133, technical fall at 157, and major decision at 165.

Seventh-ranked Zane Richards circled around second-ranked Cory Clark 17 seconds into overtime to win, 5-3. Illinois’ top-ranked Isaiah Martinez remained undefeated with a 21-5 technical fall over No. 16 Edwin Cooper, Jr. at 157, and seventh-ranked Steven Rodriguez scored a takedown in the final seconds to secure a 12-4 major decision against Patrick Rhoads at 165.

“We want to be more aware,” said UI head coach Tom Brands. “There is a lot of season left and a lot glaring mistakes. It seemed like we were wasting a lot of time and giving points away at the edge or end of the period and situations where we don’t have to do that. There are good things and bad things that we did, and we have to be able to pick it up when things weren’t going our way.”

Iowa returns to the mat Sunday in Evanston, Illinois. The Hawkeyes and Wildcats meet at 2 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

NOTES: Attendance was 1,451… Gilman improved to 13-0 with 11 wins by bonus points… Carton is 2-1 all-time in Big Ten duals, tonight was his first career road win… Meyer’s technical fall was his first of the season… Burak has won 13 straight, matching his career high.

NIU WRESTLING: Huskies Downed by Northern Iowa, 24-12

Four Huskies recorded victories in the dual on Friday night in DeKalb. Full results listed below.

DeKALB, Ill. – Four Huskies recorded individual victories, but the Northern Illinois University wrestling team was unable to knock off No. 25 Northern Iowa on Friday night in a Mid-American Conference dual as the Huskies were defeated by the Panthers, 24-12, in front of a raucous Victor E. Court crowd in DeKalb.

Six individual victories, including two pins, made the difference for the Panthers (2-4, 1-2 MAC), despite some impressive performances from the Huskies (3-4, 0-2 MAC) in the 28th all-time matchup between the two programs.

Following the dual, NIU wrestling head coach Ryan Ludwig rued his team’s slow start after seeing the Huskies fall behind 12-3 through four bouts, but he was pleased with how his wrestlers finished the contest and emphasized how great of an atmosphere the fans created at Victor E. Court.

“We got off to a bad start and didn’t get the ball rolling like we needed. You have to come out strong, come out fighting and come out aggressive. If you don’t, bad things happen. But I was much more pleased with the energy we showed after the intermission against a really good team,” Ludwig said. “There was unbelievable energy in this place tonight, and we appreciate all the local youth wrestlers that were here to make it a great atmosphere for college wrestling.”

The noise volume reached its peak on Friday night when Trace Engelkes (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) pulled off an incredible late comeback in the best contest of the night at 174 pounds. Trailing 8-4 and on bottom with less than a minute remaining, Engelkes got a reversal and followed with four nearfall points to emerge victorious by 10-9 decision over Kyle Lux and earn a standing ovation from the Huskie faithful.

The NIU fans were on their feet again after No. 16 Shawn Scott (Holly, Mich./Holly) improved to 2-0 in MAC matches this season at 197 pounds with a 3-1 sudden victory decision thanks to an overtime takedown against Jared Bartel. Gabe Morse (Alto, Mich./Lowell) at 149 pounds and Alijah Jeffery (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) at 125 pounds also received the praise of their coach after recording multiple takedowns on their way to nice victories on Friday.

“Gabe wrestled a really strong match and showed good control throughout. Trace’s win was incredible with the grit and determination he displayed against the odds. That win was a huge testament to what he’s all about. Shawn had a tight battle, but he showed great leadership in winning an outstanding wrestling match. And Alijah was awesome tonight with his offensive attacks and ability to score on top,” Ludwig said of his team’s winning wrestlers.

The Huskies were unable to upset any of Northern Iowa’s three ranked wrestlers that appeared in the contest, with No. 20 Bryce Steiert at 157 and No. 7 Blaize Cabell at heavyweight recording pins and bonus points for the Panthers to extend their lead during the dual.

The NIU wrestling team faces another ranked opponent next time out, when the Huskies host No. 10 Illinois from the Big Ten on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Victor E. Court in a nonconference dual in DeKalb. Admission is FREE for all fans on Sunday. The dual will also be broadcast live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.

DEKALB, Illinois – The UNI wrestling team snagged its first MAC win beating Northern Illinois, 24-12 Friday night.

The Panthers only gave up four weight classes to improve to 2-4 overall, 1-2 in the MAC.

Jake Koethe knocked off his second top-20 opponent of the year to spark UNI. As the lead-off wrestler of the dual, his decision over No. 15 Steve Bleise put the Panthers up 3-0 over the Huskies.

Koethe led the entire match and put Bleise on his back just as the whistle blew, but he had to settle for the 8-4 decision.

Koethe beat No. 17 Anthony Abidin of Nebraska at the Midlands Championships last week.

After a loss at 149 pounds, UNI went on to take the next two matches.

True freshman No. 20 Bryce Steiert picked up a first-period fall against Austin Culton in 2 minutes, 12 seconds. It was Steiert's second pin of the year, and he stays perfect in the MAC (3-0).

Taylor Berger got his first MAC dual win of the year over Shaun'Qae McMurty, who is ranked third in the MAC at 165 pounds. His decision put the Panthers up 12-3.

Kyle Lux built up a 6-3 lead and nearly two minutes of riding time heading into the third period. Just as he locked up riding time with a minute left in the match, Trace Engelkes got a quick reversal and earned back points to take the match, 10-9.

Cody Caldwell had a flurry of points in the first period with a quick takedown and four near fall points, but Caldwell wasn't able to secure the fall. An escape in the second period and a final takedown in the third gave him the 9-5 decision over Quinton Rosser.

The 197-pound match went into sudden victory, but Jared Bartel eventually fell to returning NCAA qualifier Shawn Scott, 3-1.

Heavyweight No. 15 Blaize Cabell gave the Panthers a big boost by pinning Arthur Bunce in 2:27. It was Cabell's first fall of the season, and it kept him perfect in the MAC (3-0).

Despite a loss at 125 pounds, the dual was locked up for UNI heading into the final match of the night. Alber went on the offensive and led 6-1 after the first. He would go on to win 9-3.

NEXT UP
Several Panthers will head to Dubuque Saturday to compete unattached in the Flash Flanagan Open hosted by Loras College.

The next dual for UNI is on the road against No. 5 Virginia Tech. The Panthers will be at home 7 p.m. Jan. 29 when they host Central Michigan in the West Gym.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Heavyweight Tyler Kral closed out the 19th-ranked Purdue wrestling home and Big Ten Conference opener with a decision, but the dual went to No. 1 Penn State 42-3 inside Holloway Gymnasium on Friday. The Nittany Lions remained undefeated at 7-0, while picking up their second Big Ten win. The loss moves the 19th-ranked Boilermakers' record to 5-2, 0-1 Big Ten.

Kral's takedown in the third period, along with 3:14 of riding time secured him a 7-4 decision over Jan Johnson. The takedown came after the redshirt junior escaped to start the third period, breaking a 3-3 tie.

"When we were tied, I knew I had the riding time, but that didn't stop me from moving forward and scoring," Kral said.

Kral held a 3-2 lead after the first three minutes of action thanks to an early takedown and an escape following a Johnson reversal.

"The coaches preach whoever scores first is going to win," Kral said. "They told me to go out there and hit my stuff. I took care of business."

The win is the first of his career in Big Ten dual action and he evens his season mark at 7-7.

Outside of the dual's final bout, Penn State claimed seven of its nine victories with bonus points. Luke Welch and Tanner Lynde were edged in decisions. At 133 pounds, No. 4 Jordan Conaway edged Welch 8-3. Nittany Lion Brian Brill broke a 7-7 tie midway through the third with an escape and a takedown to secure an 11-7 decision at 184.

Purdue will split a pair of duals next weekend. The Boilermakers will first wrestle at Michigan State on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. ET, and then return home to Holloway for a 1 p.m. dual against Maryland on Jan. 17.

Eagles defeat Brown and Bloomsburg, fall to third-ranked NC State

PITTSBURGH – The American University wrestling team went 2-1 at the Pitt Duals on Saturday, defeating Brown (21-13) and Bloomsburg (36-9) before falling to third-ranked NC State (28-6).

Against Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) foe Brown, American captured six of 10 bouts to earn the victory. The Eagles got out to a 9-0 lead in the team scoring with decisions by senior David Terao, redshirt junior Esteban Gomez-Rivera and redshirt senior Tyler Scotton before the Bears got on the board with a decision at 149 pounds.

After 10th-ranked senior John Boyle earned a decision at 157 pounds to give American a 12-3 advantage, Brown came back with wins in the next three bouts, scoring a pair of decisions and a major decision to take a 13-12 lead. However, sophomore Jeric Kasunic recorded a fall at 197 to put the Eagles back on top and freshman Jake Scanlan added a decision in the heavyweight match to secure AU’s win.

The Eagles won seven of nine contested bouts in its dual versus Bloomsburg to roll to the 36-9 victory. Terao, ranked ninth in the nation at 125 pounds, got things started for American with a fall in just 42 seconds, while Gomez-Rivera scored a decision at 133 pounds. The Huskies forfeited their match at 141 pounds, but earned their first points at 149 pounds, winning by injury default.

Boyle put American back on the board with a major decision, while redshirt senior Mitchell Wightman rolled to a 15-0 technical fall to give the Eagles a 25-6 lead in the team scoring. A decision by junior Jason Grimes at 174 clinched the dual victory for American, but Bloomsburg picked up a decision at 184 pounds to get back on the scoreboard. The Eagles then closed out the duals with two more wins, a fall by Kasunic and a decision by Scanlan.

American finished the day with a dual against NC State, ranked third in the latest NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll. Terao recorded his third victory of the day, scoring a 16-9 decision to give the Eagles an early lead. However, with three top-10 wrestlers in the next five weight classes, the Wolfpack scored five straight decisions to go up 15-3.

Grimes ended NCSU’s run, earning a 3-2 decision to put American back on the board, but the Wolfpack earned bonus-point victories in the last three bouts with a tech fall and a pair of major decisions.

“In the first two dual meets today, we performed well as a group,” said American head coach Teague Moore. “We executed our offense and won the small battles.

“The NC State dual did not go as we planned. Although we wrestled many close battles, we have the ability to have our hands raised in more of those matches.

“They are an extremely good team—one of the top teams in the country—and we must believe that we can beat them.”

The Eagles are back in action next weekend with a pair of home EIWA duals, hosting Navy on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m., before facing Drexel on Sunday, Jan. 17, at noon.

@PackWrestle Breezes to 4-0 Record at Pitt Duals
Packwins 30 of its 40 matches on the day, 20 bonus point victories

PITTSBURGH, PA. - The third-ranked NC State wrestling team picked up four more dual wins on Saturday, improving to 16-0 on the 2015-16 season. At Saturday’s Pitt Duals, the Wolfpack eased to wins over Hofstra (35-9), Harvard (37-6), Edinboro (31-6), and American (28-6).

The Pack won 30 of its 40 matches on the day, with 20 of those wins being bonus point victories.

The Wolfpack continues its hot start to the 2015-16 season, now sporting a perfect 16-0 mark. The 16 wins tie the total from all of last season, and currently sit as the third-best mark in school history for single season victories.

With the four wins day, NC State head coach Pat Popolizio also goes over 50 for his four-year NC State career.

Wolfpack Highlights:
• #8 Jr. Max Rohskopf returned to action for the first time since the Pack’s dual win at Oklahoma State on Dec. 6. He went a perfect 4-0, with two pins and a major decision among his wins.

• Tommy Gantt only saw action in one dual, and not only did he pick up the win, but he picked up another win over a ranked foe. Gantt defeated #14 Boyle of American, 8-4, and in the process ran his season record to a perfect 14-0, and 4-0 vs. ranked foes, with three of those wins coming in his last four matchups.

• Jamal Morris was the only Pack wrestler to see action at 133 pounds today, and he ended the day a perfect 4-0. His day started with a technical fall and then scored back-to-back first period pins.

• #15 Pete Renda wrestled in the last two duals, and both wins came via technical fall - 19-0 and 17-1.

HAMPTON, VA—With three nationally ranked starters out of the lineup, the Broncs lost to Bucknell Saturday on the second day of the Virginia Duals.

The shorthanded Broncs (4-7) went 1-3 at the two-day event. “Not going to beat good teams with 30 percent of your line up out,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.

On Saturday, senior Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional), junior Paul Kirchner (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) and junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel) won for Rider.

Kirchner (11-9) won by fall to give Rider a brief 9-6 lead. Kirchner was 2-2 on the weekend.

Wolfe (15-8) and Deutsch (7-5) both went 3-1 in the tournament. “Wolfe looked good this weekend,” Taylor said. “He is definitely improving. He is still adjusting to moving up two weight classes from last year.”

Wolfe is currently ranked 20th in the nation at 197 pounds. “He has a lot of speed but when you move up two weight classes you have to slow things down a little bit,” Taylor said. “You can also get crunched. The hips are a lot more powerful at this weight. He is making some really good adjustments.”

Rider hosts Lock Haven in an EWL dual meet Saturday, January 16, at 3pm. “Hopefully we’ll have a full team by the end of the year, or sooner,” Taylor said. “We should have one or two of them back next week.”

Subject: ODU Wrestling Falls to Kent State, 23-13, Finishes 2-2 at VA Duals
To:

HAMPTON, Va. -- The Old Dominion wrestling team dropped its final dual meet of the 2016 Virginia Duals to Kent State, 23-13, to finish second in the silver bracket with a 2-2 record for the tournament. Brandon Jeske and Chris Mecate finished the weekend undefeated at 4-0.

"We were very impressed with Brandon Jeske this weekend," head coach Steve Martin said. "He really got back in his groove and dominated his first three opponents. It was good to see him putting up bonus points. We come to the Virginia Duals because it always pits us against high-level competitors and gives us the opportunity to wrestle teams we wouldn't normally run into until the NCAA tournament. We took away a lot of things to work on from this weekend and will continue to build for the NCAAs in March which is our main focus."

Beginning at 125, Brandon Jeske earned a takedown in the last 10 seconds of his bout against Kent State's Del Vinas to win, 3-1. The Golden Flashes responded at 133 as tenth-ranked Mack McGuire used a first period takedown, second period escape and a riding time point to upend the Monarchs' Emilio Saavedra, 4-2.

In the 141 bout, Chris Mecate finished the weekend undefeated with a third period rideout of Anthony Tutolo. The fifth-year senior yielded a stalling point in the final minute but was able to keep Tutolo from escaping to claim the 2-1 victory.

Alexander Richardson dominated Chance Driscoll, 11-2, at 149 to extend the Monarchs' lead to 10-3, but Kent State responded with a major decision of their own at 157 as Casey Sparkman defeated Austin Eads, 14-5.

At 165, Kent State's Tyler Buckwalter used a third period takedown and a four-point nearfall to rack up an 11-2 major decision over ODU freshman Seldon Wright to give the Golden Flashes their first lead of the dual meet, 11-10, but Brooks Climmons' 6-2 victory over Mike Vollant put Old Dominion back out in front, 13-11.

Kent State went on to win three straight matches at 184, 197 and 285 to defeat the Monarchs, 23-13.

ODU finished second in the silver bracket with a 2-2 record for the 2016 Virginia Duals with victories over Campbell and Rider.

The Monarchs will square off against Kent State again on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. in Kent, Ohio.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Thirteenth-ranked Michigan won key matches at 133, 149 and 174 pounds to secure a 21-11 victory over No. 6 Ohio State before a season-high crowd of 4,307 on Saturday afternoon at St. John Arena. The Buckeyes saw their three-match winning streak come to an end while falling to 5-2 overall (2-1 B1G) while Michigan is now 6-1 (2-0 B1G).

THE SHORT STORY
Michigan won seven of 10 matches overall, including the final four, but the Buckeyes were led by redshirt sophomore Bo Jordan, who racked up bonus points on his way to a 19-4 tech fall over Garrett Sutton at 165 pounds. Other Buckeye victories came from Nathan Tomasello (125 lbs.), who stayed undefeated and ran his winning streak to 29 straight matches, and Micah Jordan, a 7-3 winner at 141 pounds.

STARS OF THE NIGHT
125: Tomasello decision over No. 19 Connor Youtsey, 4-2
141: M. Jordan decision over George Fisher, 7-3
165: B. Jordan tech fall over Garrett Sutton, 19-4

TOMASELLO GETS THINGS STARTED
In the first match of the afternoon, Tomasello gutted out a 4-2 win over 19th-ranked Connor Youtsey, 4-2. After a scoreless first period, Tomasello got a takedown with 32 seconds remaining in the second period, escaped to start the third period and was award his fourth point on an unnecessary roughness call with 13 seconds remaining. The reigning national champion is now 11-0 on the year.

M. JORDAN WINS #14
After an upset for Michigan at 133 pounds where No. 16 Rossi Bruno upended eighth-ranked Johnni DiJulius, 4-1, Micah Jordan swung the team score back in favor of Ohio State with a 7-3 decision over George Fisher. The key moment in the match occurred at the end of the second period when Jordan, leading 3-2, scored a reversal to get a 5-2 advantage. He got a third-period takedown for his final margin of victory. A redshirt freshman, Jordan is now 14-1 on the year.

KRESEVIC BATTLES #5 MURPHY
Versatile backup Justin Kresevic, a redshirt junior, wrestled in his 14th match of the year and battled fifth-ranked Brian Murphy before dropping a 5-2 decision at 157 lbs. it was also the fourth time this year that Kresevic had appeared in a dual (vs. Virginia, Arizona State, Cleveland State and Michigan).

B. JORDAN SCORES BONUS POINTS
Bo Jordan, who was named the Russ Hellickson Wrestler of the Match at the conclusion of the dual, scored the only bonus-point victory of the night when he racked up 19 points on his way to a tech fall over Garrett Sutton.

Jordan wasted little time going on the offensive, scoring eight first period points and then got his third takedown of the match at the 1:24 mark of the second period. Smelling a tech fall, Jordan got four third-period takedowns and racked up nearly four minutes of riding time. The redshirt sophomore and All-American improved to 9-0 on the year with six of those coming via tech fall and fall.

U-M WINS FINAL FOUR

Ahead 11-9, Ohio State hoped that the home debut of freshman Myles Martin would ignite it the rest of the way. Instead, Michigan’s Davonte Mahomes scored the one and only takedown of the match 13 seconds into sudden-victory overtime to score a 3-1 upset. It was Martin’s second match as a starter after earning a 23-7 tech fall last Sunday at Illinois. The Wolverines also won by decision at 184, 197 and 285 pounds to close out the dual. Redshirt junior Nick Tavanello battled fourth-ranked and 2015 NCAA runner-up Adam Coon, giving up a late takedown before falling 4-1.

STIEBER MAKES 2015-16 DEBUT
The much-anticipated season debut of Hunter Stieber took place this afternoon as the two-time All-American dropped a hard-fought 5-3 decision against eighth-ranked Alec Pantaleo. Stieber scored each of his three points on escapes.

PITTSBURGH --- Led by triple winners Joey Ward, John Michael Staudenmayer, Ethan Ramos and Alex Utley, No. 15 North Carolina swept the competition at the 2016 Pitt Duals Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House. Carolina opened the day with a 26-11 win over Edinboro before defeating Ivy League foes Columbia and Brown by scores of 24-12 and 29-9. Evan Henderson added a pair of pins for the Tar Heels, who improved to 9-1 on the year heading into next Saturday's ACC opener at Virginia Tech.

UNC fell behind in all three duals but used bonus point wins to pull away and extend its winning streak to eight. Ward registered two major decisions and a tech fall in his three victories, outscoring his opponents 41-3. Ramos had a pair of majors and narrowly missed a third, while Utley needed just 2:34 for a first period tech fall in his win over Edinboro's Chris Laird.

After an upset loss to Patricio Lugo of Edinboro in the first dual of the day, Henderson showed dominant form in a pair of first period pins. The redshirt senior stuck Columbia's Tyler Ponte in 2:15 before needing a mere 13 seconds to get the fall over Brown's Travis Vasquez, a pin that stands as the fastest of Henderson's All-American career. He now has 42 career pins, just eight shy of the school record of 50 set by T.J. Jaworsky.

Carolina had a good day at 197 pounds as well as Chip Ness and Scott Marmoll combined to go 3-0. Ness tallied a pair of decisions against Edinboro and Brown while Marmoll netted a bonus point with an 11-2 major over Columbia's Troy Hembury.

UNC will begin Atlantic Coast Conference competition on Saturday, Jan. 16, when the Tar Heels travel to Blacksburg to take on No. 5 Virginia Tech.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – As the seconds ticked away in the third period, the crowd at University Gymnasium began to crescendo into a roar. Indiana junior Nate Jackson, the 11th-ranked grappler at 174 lbs., had top-ranked Bo Nickal on the ropes.

Nickal sent a barrage of lunges at Jackson in the final 20 seconds, but Jackson swatted and parried each takedown attempt. In the final seconds, Nickal had Jackson in a single-leg, but the Hoosier junior maintained his footing.

Then, the final buzzer blared through the gymnasium. The referee reached for Jackson's arm and hoisted it to the rafters.

Jackson secured a decision win over the top-ranked grappler in the country.

"That's something he'll remember his whole life," said Indiana head coach Duane Goldman. "If you take out the No. 1 guy in the country, it doesn't matter when it was or how it was. That's something he'll remember, and that's a great victory for him."

Jackson earned one of Indiana's two bout wins in a 34-8 loss to No. 1 Penn State. Hoosier heavyweightGarret Goldman earned the first pin of his collegiate career in a win over Jan Johnson.

"It definitely shows that there's a lot of room to improve, but Penn State is a really good team. Overall, as a team we wrestled pretty hard and pushed ourselves. We definitely have room to improve, but that gives us an idea of where and how we can improve."

The bout between Jackson and Nickal came third on Sunday's bout card, after Penn State built an 8-0 lead. Fans showed their support for Jackson as he took the mat for his first career match against a top-ranked wrestler.

"I think it's the loudest I've heard it since I've been here," Jackson said of the crowd at University Gymnasium. "That was a big deal."

After two minutes of locking up on their feet, Nickal got the first takedown. From that position, Nickal began to find leverage for some early nearfall points.

Then, without warning, Jackson made his move.

From the referee's position, Jackson sprung out of Nickal's snare for a reversal. He followed that with a four-point nearfall, and almost ended the bout with a pin. Jackson, to the delight of the Hoosier faithful, held his 6-2 lead to the end of the round.

"That's the awesome thing about wrestling—if you pin the guy, the match is over," coach Goldman said. "It doesn't matter who you are, or what the score is. His wasn't a fall, but a big six-point move helped him claim that win, and deservedly so."

Jackson displayed excellent defense in the second period. Nickal cut Jackson's lead to three points with an early-round escape, but the Hoosier held for a 6-3 lead heading into the final round.

Nickal earned a takedown at the start of the third. Jackson escaped to hold a two-point lead. Nickal's nearly grabbed a second takedown with 50 seconds to go, but the official waved it off. The call was close enough to warrant a review, which halted the bout with less than a minute to go.

Fans believed that the review would slow Jackson's momentum and cost him the match. Fortunately for the junior, his coaching staff knows how to keep his mind on the bout.

"I sometimes get a little scatterbrained on the mat, and they know how to calm me down and temper me," Jackson said when explaining how he maintains his focus. "Then, I can refocus on the match. They did that for me today, so all the credit to them."

The officials confirmed that Nickal didn't secure a takedown, and the round resumed. Nickal forced a stalling call on Jackson to cut the lead to one, but Jackson maintained his lead to the final buzzer.

"Going in, I thought I could beat him," Jackson said after the dual. "I knew he would have some weapons, but I have my own skill set that guys haven't seen a lot of. I know I could beat anybody in the country; it's just about me showing up and having a good match.

"Getting your hand raised, that's what we work for."

Goldman Earns First Collegiate Pin

Jackson wasn't the only Hoosier with a raided hand on Sunday afternoon. Indiana senior Garret Goldmanwon the heavyweight bout over Penn State freshman Jan Johnson. His fall at the 5:35 mark was the first of his NCAA career.

"It's definitely a confidence booster," Goldman said regarding his win. "It's nice to get those Big Ten wins up, because they're hard to come by. It lets other guys know that you're a competitor in this conference."

Goldman got the first takedown 30 seconds into the round, followed by an escape from Johnson. IU's senior heavyweight picked up 1:16 of riding time by the end of the first.

Goldman started down in the second period, but jumped to his feet within 20 seconds. He followed with a thundering takedown for a 5-1 lead, then added another minute to his riding time. At the end of two periods, Goldman felt his moment was coming.

"From the start of the match, I wrestled hard and kept pushing him," Goldman said. "I worked to not give him any of his positions and kept him on his feet the whole time."

Goldman found his moment 25 seconds into the final period. He caught Johnson in a single-leg, tripped him onto his back, and made his move.

The win was Goldman's first Big Ten dual win of the season.

"Garret's match today was a great thing for him, securing his first collegiate pin," coach Goldman said. "He capitalized on his opportunity and wrestled a solid match."

Up Next: #20 Indiana (4-1, 1-1) vs. Maryland (4-6, 1-3)
Friday, January 15 | 7PM | BTN Plus
Bloomington, Ind. | University Gymnasium

The Big Ten season rolls on next Friday, when the Hoosiers lock up for a home dual against the Maryland Terrapins. Indiana seeks their second Big Ten dual win for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The Hoosiers' approach to this match is the same that it's been all year.

"Our coaches have been telling us all season to not just go after it, but to go get it," Goldman said. "The Big Ten is the toughest wrestling conference in the country, and Maryland is no exception. Nothing is given to you in this league, so we need to go and take it."--

Maryland Captures First Big Ten Dual Victory Over Michigan State

Terps Win Seven Bouts in Win Over Spartans

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Terps won seven bouts, including the final three of the match as the Maryland wrestling program secured its first-ever Big Ten Conference dual meet victory 26-10 over Michigan State Sunday afternoon. After trailing 3-8 through the first three weights, the Terps came from behind to take six of the next seven and move to 4-6 (1-3 Big Ten) on the year. The Spartans drop to 0-8 (0-3 Big Ten).

“It feels good to finally get that first one,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “It’s been a long time coming we were really close last year. We were close with a bunch of opportunities in other matches, but finally we were able to push through and get it done. There’s no real secret to it, guys went out there and wrestled hard. We had some roller coaster matches but guys were able to bounce back and finish strong. It’s exciting to get this one. We’re going to enjoy it for a little bit, but we’re going to continue to get back to work we have a lot more coming.”

After the visitors jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a technical fall at 125, redshirt senior Geoffrey Alexander (133) got the Terps back on track with his second head-to-head conference win of the year. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native got an early takedown for a 2-0 lead, then muscled his way to a hard fought escape for a 3-0 edge in the second period. MSU’s Garth Yenter countered with a takedown, but an escape and late takedown from Alexander sealed a 7-2 decision.

The Spartans would push the lead back to five with a close decision at 141, but freshman Wade Hodges (149) responded for the hosts with his first major decision win of the season. He jumped out to 6-0 lead after the first on a takedown and four-point near fall, then remained in control en route to a 9-0 major over Kaelan Richards.

Consecutive victories from redshirt senior Lou Mascola (157) and freshman Brendan Burnham (165) put the Terps up by six, starting with a solid 8-4 decision for Mascola over Michigan State’s Joe Johnson. The win marked the fourth Big Ten dual victory of the year for Mascola, who now sits at 12-3 on the season with a team-leading eight dual meet twins.

Burnham turned in perhaps his most complete performance of the season vs. Dean Vettese, sealing a 13-3 major decision. The 10-point margin of victory was his largest of the year, as he continually found ways to take the Spartan to the mat giving his team a 14-8 advantage. MSU managed another win at 174 to cut it to 14-11, but it was all Maryland from there winning the final three.

The Spartans didn’t make it easy, as freshman Jaron Smith (184) found himself behind 0-4 on an early takedown and two-point near fall from Shwan Shadaia. Smith countered swapping two reversals for a takedown, but trailed 4-6 heading into the second period. There Smith took command, getting a takedown after an escape to get ahead 7-6. Both wrestlers were scrambling for points in the third, but Smith held up defensively to clinch his second straight Big Ten victory by decision. Redshirt-freshman Garrett Wesneski (197) was also on the ropes against Jacob Cooper, finding himself behind 2-1 with the clock winding down in the third period. A clutch reversal from the bottom ended up making the difference, as the Canton, Pa. native captured his first career Big Ten win.

With the team decision in hand, freshman Youssif Hemida (285) provided perhaps the most entertaining match of the afternoon in a back-and-forth heavyweight tussle with Dimitrus Renfroe. The two wrestlers found themselves tied at four heading into the third, before a MSU penalty and takedown made it 6-5 in the final minute. There Hemida dug deep, getting a reversal and position on Renfroe to take the lead. From there the Mamaroneck, N.Y. native executed the pin with just two seconds remaining to send the XFINITY Center crowd into a frenzy and clinch the 26-10 team victory.

The win marked the first victory for the Terps over Michigan State, who came into the day leading the all-time series 2-0. Maryland will be back in action for another Big Ten doubleheader next weekend January 15 & 17 when the team travels to wrestle Indiana in Bloomington, Indiana and Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.

PHILADELPHIA – Caleb Richardson finally was able to score a win over Lehigh’s returning All-American, Mason Beckman, but that win wasn’t enough as the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team was unable to defeat the No. 10 Mountain Hawks in a 27-10 defeat at The Palestra.

Richardson scored a takedown in the first period, and his riding time edge was enough to earn a 4-3 decision over Beckman – a two-time All-American who defeated Richardson twice last year including a sudden victory decision at NCAAs.

Richardson’s win was one of three for the Quakers in the dual meet. The other victories came from No. 11 C.J. Cobb at 149 pounds, and No. 16 Casey Kent at 174 pounds.

Cobb was unable to initiate much offense against Laike Gardner, but riding time was the edge in a 2-1 decision which saw Cobb have to defend until the final whistle.

Kent opened up a bit against Gordon Wolf for a 12-3 major decision. Kent scored the first takedown of the match early in the opening period, and quickly added four points of nearfall. After a takedown in the second, Kent conceded a score in the third period. In danger of losing the bonus point, Kent was able to work a reversal in the final seconds to earn the major.

The latest installment of Lorenzo Thomas vs. Nate Brown was again a two-point decision in favor of Brown. The first score of the match was a takedown in favor of Brown, and Thomas answered with a score of his own in the second period. Thomas was unable to escape in the third period, and a late attempt a reversal ran out of time.

The dual was 11-6 in favor of Lehigh after five matches, and wins for the Mountain Hawks and 157 and 165 swung momentum squarely in Lehigh’s favor. Penn had the lead in both bouts, scoring the first takedown in each, but was unable to hold on to the advantage.

No. 8 Mitch Minotti eked out a 3-2 decision over May Bethea at 157. Bethea had the first score, connecting on a double leg in the first period. Minotti answered with an escape and takedown in the second. Bethea chose neutral for the third, but could not find the winning takedown.

At 165, No. 16 Ryan Preisch scored six points in the final 10 seconds on a takedown and nearfall to turn a 4-2 lead into an 11-2 major decision over Ray Bethea.

Other wins for Lehigh came from No. 12 Max Wessel at heavyweight (11-4 decision), No. 13 Darian Cruz at 125 pounds (26-9 technical fall), No. 19 Randy Cruz (6-3 decision) and Ben Haas at 197 (injury default at 2:09). At 197, Frank Mattiace had scored first to take the lead, but injured his knee in a scramble situation following a Haas escape. Mattiace attempted to continue, but a second injury timeout forced the default.

The Quakers are 0-1 in dual meets this season, while Lehigh improves to 9-1.

Up next for Penn is a pair of dual meets on the road on January 17. Penn will wrestle Sacred Heart at noon before a 5 p.m. dual at Army West Point.

No. 10 Lehigh defeats Penn, 27-10285: No. 12 Max Wessel (Lehigh) defeats Patrik Garren (Penn), 11-4 Lehigh leads, 3-0125: No. 13 Darian Cruz (Lehigh) defeats Jeremy Schwartz (Penn), 26-9 (7:00) Lehigh leads, 8-0133: Caleb Richardson (Penn) defeats Mason Beckman (Lehigh), 4-3 Lehigh leads, 8-3141: No. 19 Randy Cruz (Lehigh) defeats Marc Mastropietro (Penn), 6-3 Lehigh leads, 11-3149: No. 11 C.J. Cox’s Technical Fall Propels No. 4 @MizzouWrestling to Win Over No. 14 Cornell
Miklus and Cox bump up weight classes, secure victories to clinch win

COLUMBIA, Mo.– Junior 197-pounderJ'den Cox(Columbia, Mo.) provided the magic No. 4 Mizzou Wrestling (7-0) needed to erase a 17-10 deficit to defeat No. 14 Cornell (1-3), 18-17, Sunday at Jesse Auditorium. Head CoachBrian Smithbumped redshirt sophomoreWillie Miklus(Altoona, Iowa) and Cox up one weight class to 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. The strategy paid off, as Miklus won his match by decision, and Cox earned a victory by technical fall over Jeramy Sweany, 24-9, to push Mizzou over the top for the 18-17 win.

Mizzou's dual win-streak improved to 35 duals with the defeat of the No. 14-rated Big Red. 1,224 fans were in attendance Sunday to witness the Tigers' win, the second time in program history Mizzou has wrestled in Jesse Auditorium. The Tigers defeated Ohio, 23-10, on Dec. 6, 2013.

Cornell had a 6-0 lead after two matches when redshirt junior 141-pounderMatt Manley(Perry, Okla.) took to the mat. The Tiger junior earned a 9-1 major decision against Will Koll, scoring four points for the Tigers. Manley scored a near-fall in the closing seconds of the third period, then riding time gave him his ninth point for the 9-1 major decision. Manley improved to 6-0 in dual competition and 20-4 overall with the victory.

Next, redshirt juniorLavion Mayes(Mascoutah, Ill.) continued his undefeated season with a 9-2 decision win over Joey Galasso. Mayes took control early with a takedown in the first period, and never looked back. Mayes is now 16-0 this year and 7-0 in duals. The decision victory gave Mizzou a 7-6 lead after four matches, the first lead of the day for the Tigers.

Redshirt freshman 165-pounderDaniel Lewis(Blue Springs, Mo.) squared up against Duke Pickett in the 165-pound match. Lewis earned a 3-2 victory by decision in overtime. In the third period, Lewis scored an escape with 1:39 left and another escape with 32 seconds left to make the score 2-2. The score remained tied at 2-2 through two overtime periods, despite excellent wrestling by Lewis, who came close to scoring takedowns on two separate occasions. Finally, in the third overtime, Lewis scored an escape with just eight seconds left on the clock to secure the win, 3-2. The victory by decision gave the lead back to Mizzou by the score of 10-9.

Cornell led 17-10 heading into the 197-pound match between W. Miklus and Jake Taylor. Miklus was awarded a stalling point with one minute left in the third period, giving him an 8-7 victory by decision. Miklus improved to 11-2 this year and a perfect 7-0 in duals. The victory cut the Cornell lead to 17-13 going into the final heavyweight match.

Cox took to the mat needing a technical fall against Cornell's Jeramy Sweany for Mizzou to win the dual. Cox used 10 takedowns, including four in the third period to make the score, 23-9. At the end of the match, riding time was in Cox's favor, giving him the victory by technical fall, 24-9, and Mizzou the dual, 18-17.

The Tigers will be back in action again on Friday, Jan. 15 when they take on MAC rival Eastern Michigan at the Hearnes Center. The dual will begin at 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed on the ESPN3/Watch ESPN.

Minnesota Falls in First B1G Road Dual of Season

Gophers took three of the final four bouts, but an early deficit proved too much to overcome

No. 21 Minnesota took three of the final four matches against No. 9 Nebraska on Sunday afternoon, but an early deficit proved too much to overcome as the Huskers knocked off the Gophers, 24-10.

The Gophers picked up their first points of the dual at 174 pounds, when Nick Wanzek earned a major decision over Dustin Williams, 10-1. Wanzek controlled the match from its outset, taking down Williams twice in the first period and adding a two-point tilt during the opening frame. The win is the second consecutive bonus point win for Wanzek, the first time in his career he’s earned bonus points for the Gophers in back-to-back duals.

No. 4 Brett Pfarr added a decision at 197, defeating Derek White, 5-2. Pfarr was the match’s aggressor throughout, earning a point for stalling when White was hit with multiple warnings for moving away from the action. Now 24-2 on the season, Pfarr has already matched his season win total from last season, his first as a full-time starter for the Gophers.

Following Pfarr, No. 7 Michael Kroells finished the dual with a thrilling comeback victory over No. 17 Collin Jensen. Trailing 5-3 in the match’s final minute, Kroells took down Jensen and rode him out for the rest of the third period, forcing sudden victory overtime. In the overtime session, Kroells defended a shot from Jensen and scored the takedown on a go-behind to take the match, 7-5. The win preserves Kroells’ undefeated career record against Jensen, which now sits at 4-0.

While a late flourish provided some highlights for Minnesota near the dual’s conclusion, early struggles put the Gophers too far behind the Huskers to catch up. Nebraska took the first six matches of the dual, starting with a major decision at 125 pounds and a five-point win at 133. The next four wins were all tight, with each match within two points heading into the final seconds. The last three of those matches – 149, 157 and 165 pounds – ended 5-3, 3-2 and 3-1, respectively. Those wins built the 19-point lead that the Gophers were unable to erase.

Full match-by-match results are available at: bit.ly/1RgX9zi

The Gophers will have seven days off before returning to action at the Sports Pavilion next Sunday at 1 p.m. Central, when Minnesota hosts No. 8 Rutgers. The dual will be streamed live on BTN Plus and live, mat-side updates will be provided by Gopher Wrestling on Twitter.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

@IlliniWrestling Gets Back On Track, Beats NIU 27-14

Illini Win 6 of 10 matches, Improve to 9-2 in Duals

DEKALB,Ill.— The Orange and Blue stepped outside of the rugged Big Ten today when they traveled to take on Northern Illinois today in Dekalb, Illinois. Once there, the Illini got back to their winning ways with a strong performance, beating the Huskies 27-14, snapping their two-match losing streak. The victory was jump-started by a pin from Brooks Black to open the match and an upset of No. 12 Steve Bleise by Brock Ervin.

After dropping his first two matches in Big Ten, Brooks Black responded with a commanding performance at heavyweight this afternoon. Black opened up the first period against Arthur Bunce with a takedown and two, two-point near falls. He increased his lead into the third period, where it stood 9-0, when he pinned Bunce with just under a minute remaining, giving the Illini an early 6-0 lead.

At 125 pounds, Francis Edelen and Alijiah Jeffery battled hard for five straight minutes, but remained deadlocked at 2-2 entering the final period. After a reversal by Jeffery in the third period, Edelen responded with a reversal of his own at the end of the period. However, Jeffery’s riding time exceeded the one-minute mark, giving him a 5-4 decision.

At 133 pounds, Zane Richards won by forfeit after Austin Eicher of Northern Illinois was not available due to having the flu. With two of the first three matches resulting in six points for Heffernan’s squad, the Illini led 12-3.

The match of the day occurred at 141 pounds where Brock Ervin faced off against Northern Illinois’ best, #12 Steve Bleise. The two grapplers went back-and-forth for seven, hard minutes with neither of them giving way to the other. Ervin led 4-3 after the first period when he grabbed both a reversal and a two-point near fall. Similar action took place in the second period with Ervin and Bleise exchanging takedowns and reversals that resulted in an 8-8 tie after two periods. In the final period, Bleise opened an early 11-8 lead, but once again Ervin refused to be denied. Ervin used an escape and two takedowns to retake the lead in the match’s final seconds, while adding a point for riding time to ice the match. The 14-12 victory was Ervin’s first career victory over a ranked opponent.

At 149, Kyle Langenderfer and Gabe Morse spent most of the match in a stalemate with only an escape netting a point for the two. However, a takedown by Morse in period three was the difference in the a 3-1 victory for Northern Illinois.

After intermission, Isaiah Martinez quickly dispatched of Huskies’ grappler Austin Culton 22-4, needing only two periods to earn the technical fall. The technical fall was Martinez’s 12th of the season, surpassing his NCAA-leading 11 from last season. The win also stretched his consecutive win streak to 59 straight matches.

Northern Illinois’ Shaun’Que McMurtry gave #6 Steven Rodrigues everything he could handle, pushing him hard for three periods. However, Rodrigues used an early takedown to gain a 2-0 lead and never relinquished his advantage. Rodrigues executed two more takedowns as he entered the final period up 6-3, where the redshirt-senior used an escape, a take down, and a point for riding time in period three to finalize his 10-6 decision. The win increased the Illini lead to 23-6, the largest of the day.

Once again wrestling four weight classes above normal, Isaac Reinemann struggled to contain Trace Engelkes, who entered the dual 12-8 on the season. Reinemann hung with the Huskies’ junior, only trailing 4-1 through one period and 10-4 through two, but Engelkes put Reinemann away in period three to earn a 24-7 technical fall. The five-point victory brought the Huskies deficit down to 23-11.

Illinois’ final victory of the day came at 184 pounds, where #16 Jeff Koepke earned a major decision over Quinton Rosser. Koepke struck early, and often, in period one, notching three takedowns and a two-point near fall to lead 8-2. The senior from Prospect Heights, Illinois continued to add on, during periods two and three, in route to an 18-6 major decision that pushed the Illini lead to 27-11.

In the final bout of the day, Coach Heffernan elected to use redshirt-sophomore Danny Hicks at 197 pounds against Northern Illinois’ Shawn Scott. Like multiple other matches on the day, the two wrestlers remained tight throughout After Scott claimed a 3-2 edge in period one, Hicks got an escape to tie the score 3-3 entering the final period. In the period three, Scott put Hicks away with an escape and a takedown to hold on for a 7-5 victory.

The 27-14 victory over the in-state rival put the Orange and Blue back in the win column as they reenter Big Ten play next weekend. On Friday, the Fighting Illini will travel to Michigan 6 p.m. dual before completing the road trip in East Lansing with a noon central time match against Michigan State on Sunday.

NIU Wrestling: Huskies Post Four Wins in Defeat to No. 10 Illinois

The Huskies were defeated in a competitive dual against the Illini, 27-14.

Full results listed below.

DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team posted four individual victories against No. 10 Illinois on Sunday afternoon as the Huskies fell to the Fighting Illini in a dual, 27-14, in DeKalb, Ill.

Facing a ranked opponent in front of a packed crowd at Victor E. Court for the second time in three days following Friday’s matchup against No. 25 Northern Iowa, the Huskies (3-5, 0-2 MAC) saw the same four wrestlers that won on Friday win again versus another top team, this time in the form of the Illini (9-2, 1-2 B1G).

Trace Engelkes (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) led the way for NIU with a dominating display at 174 pounds, scoring five team points for the Huskies with his 24-7 technical fall over Isaac Reinemann. Alijah Jeffery (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) at 125 pounds, Gabe Morse (Alto, Mich./Lowell) at 149 pounds and Shawn Scott (Holly, Mich./Holly) at 197 pounds also emerged victorious with three-point decision wins, with Morse’s victory coming via 3-1 decision thanks to a late takedown against 2015 NCAA Championships qualifier Kyle Langenderfer.

NIU wrestling head coach Ryan Ludwig praised those four Huskies’ performances and highlighted the two dual matches his program hosted this weekend as a necessary step forward in reaching the future goals that Coach Ludwig has set for NIU wrestling.

“I’m very happy with our four guys that went 2-0 this weekend against some high quality competition. Alijah, Gabe, Trace and Shawn delivered for us, and that’s what we expect out of them. And Gabe especially today – to beat an NCAA qualifier from last year, that was a great win for him and he wrestled a great match,” Ludwig said. “We were very happy to spotlight wrestling in DeKalb and at NIU this weekend by bringing in two great teams and have tremendous crowds as well. We have some very lofty goals for our program that we’re working very hard towards; and in order to get there, we need to wrestle teams like Northern Iowa and Illinois and have success.”

NIU was just the second non-Big Ten team this season to win four or more individual bouts against the top-10 ranked Fighting Illini, with Princeton accomplishing the feat as well while the likes of Arizona State, SIUE, Clarion, Utah Valley and others failed to score double-digit team points versus the Fighting Illini.

The Huskies fell behind 12-3 after a pin and a forfeit were sandwiched around Jeffery’s 5-4 decision over Francis Edelen at 125 pounds thanks to his riding time point, and NIU battled right with Illinois for the remainder of the dual. No. 12 Steve Bleise (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) of NIU dropped a frantic match to Brock Ervin by 14-12 decision before Morse made the score 15-6 at the intermission.

Following the break, Illinois’ tandem of No. 1 Isaiah Martinez and No. 6 Steven Rodrigues both posted wins at 157 and 165 pounds before Engelkes impressed the crowd on hand with his attacking display that cut the deficit to 23-11 with two matches remaining. A win by No. 16 Jeff Koepke of Illinois by major decision at 184 pounds sealed the dual result for the visitors, but Scott was able to post another victory for the Huskies to bring the final score to a respectable 27-14.

The NIU wrestling team will head downstate to wrestle next weekend, where the Huskies will meet SIUE on Saturday in Springfield, Ill., before facing The Citadel on Sunday in Edwardsville, Ill.

No. 2 Hawkeyes Make History in Evanston

Hawkeyes’ 54-0 shutout is largest margin of victory in a Big Ten Dual

EVANSTON, Illinois -- The University of Iowa wrestling team improved to 4-0 in the Big Ten and 10-0 overall with a 54-0 win against Northwestern on Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The second-ranked Hawkeyes (10-0, 4-0) scored bonus points in nine matches -- including five pins and a technical fall -- to record the largest margin of victory against a Big Ten opponent in school history, topping the previous mark of 53-0 against Illinois in 1992. The 54 points scored are the most against a Big Ten team in program history, and the 54-0 win is the largest win in series history (50-0, 1979).

“It was more than going out and scoring points,” said UI head coach Tom Brands. “This was about wrestling opponents that we could have overlooked and we didn’t, and that was good.”

Iowa took a 30-0 lead into intermission after Thomas Gilman, Cory Clark, and Edwin Cooper recorded falls, and Topher Carton and Brandon Sorensen won by forfeit.

Northwestern didn’t field a wrestler against Carton at 141, and midway through the second period the Wildcats’ third-ranked Jason Tsirtsis medically forfeited to Sorensen at 149. Sorensen was finishing a takedown 1:15 into the second period when Tsirtsis pulled out with an elbow injury.

“My goal is not to hurt the guy,” said Sorensen. “I wanted to finish the match. I rode him longer this time, took him down earlier this time, so that’s good, now we need to do multiple, even in the first period.”

The second half included two more Iowa pins, one technical fall and one major decision.

Patrick Rhoads won by decision at 165, Alex Meyer recorded a technical fall for the second time in as many times out at 174, Nathan Burak extended his career-best win streak to 15 with a major decision at 197, and Sammy Brooks and Sam Stoll recorded pins at 184 and 285, respectively.

Brooks was leading 15-1 and looking at a potential match termination when he finally stuck his opponent with 50 seconds left in the second.

“I didn’t want to let that pin go,” said Brooks. “I wanted it bad. I went from position to position until it worked out.”

The Hawkeyes’ lone decision of the day came at 165, where Patricks Rhoads won 9-3.

“The only thing we need to work on was scoring bonus points at 165,” added Brands. “We could have had bonus points at every weight, that would have made a better statement in my mind.

“We want to wrestle in the moment, but doing a good job now makes it easier down the road, it’s that simple. The positive impacts a positive for the future.”

Iowa returns to the mat Friday, Jan. 15 in Madison, Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes and Badgers meet at 8 p.m. at the Kohl Center. The dual is televised on BTN.

NOTES: Attendance was 960… the 54-0 win was the largest margin of victory in series history, and the largest margin of victory in a Big Ten dual in program history… Iowa has won 11 straight conference road duals… Gilman improved to 14-0 with 12 wins by bonus point, his 14-match win streak matches a career high… Sorensen has won 15 straight for the first time in his career… Meyer’s technical fall was his second of the weekend, and second of the season… Burak has won a career-best 14 straight matches… Sam Stoll and Thomas Gilman share the team lead with six falls.

Jordan wins 15th-straight match to extend unscathed recordBadgers fall to No. 2 Iowa, 31-3, in second-ever Kohl Center dual

On the web: http://go.wisc.edu/m21t59

MADISON, Wis. – In its second-ever dual at the Kohl Center Friday, the Wisconsin men’s wrestling team fell to No. 2 Iowa, 31-3, dropping nine of 10 matches, but losing five by four points or less. The Badgers are now 0-2 in the Kohl Center after dropping the first Kohl Center dual 27-7 to Iowa State.

The Hawkeyes (11-0, 5-0) scored the first points in eight of 10 matches en route to their sixth-straight win over UW (1-4, 0-3), dating back to 2007-08. Iowa now leads the all-time series 76-8-3, including a 38-4-2 mark in Madison.

“Tonight, they beat us to the punch, and some guys gave in to that,” head coach Barry Davis said. “You can’t do that. Other guys fought, they did a good job. There’s improvements, I see things happening yet, but we’re just not quite there yet.

“But I know we can do the work. We’ve got lift tomorrow, we go back to work, talk to the guys about it, stay committed and move forward.”
Despite the lopsided result, 165-pounder Isaac Jordan continued his win streak to 15-straight matches to maintain his perfect record this year.
Just one of two Badgers to take on an unranked Iowa opponent, third-ranked Jordan picked up a takedown on Patrick Rhoads in the first period and never looked back. The Urbana, Ohio, native piled on six points over the course of the match, while preventing Rhoads from registering a point until the 40-second mark of the third period when Rhoads earned an escape.

“Wrestling’s an individual sport, which is really nice because if you win, you can look at yourself and be satisfied,” Jordan said. “But as a team, there were a lot of things we need to work on, like some improvements with pace and intensity. They came in here and they were stingier than us. I think we need to readdress what our strategy is going into a match and look at it as a learning experience.”
Wisconsin’s other ranked wrestler, No. 7 Ryan Taylor, matched up with Cory Clark, who entered the dual rated third in the 133-pound weight class.
Taylor trailed, 4-1, after the first period, but UW head coach Barry Davis challenged Clark’s first of two takedowns which was eventually overturned. Due to the scoring change, the escape Taylor recorded following the takedown was also removed from the scoresheet.
The second-period stalemate—one of four on the night—was no indicator of the final period, as the pair combined to score seven points (eight with riding time point).
Clark came out victorious in a 7-3 decision, gathering a takedown, two escapes and a riding time point in the third compared to Taylor’s takedown and escape.
Easily the tightest grapple came in the 174-pound weight class, with Iowa’s 12th-ranked Alex Meyer narrowly edging Ricky Robertson in a 1-0 decision.
The Hawkeyes’ competitor notched an escape in the second period and prevented numerous attempts from Robertson to escape the bottom position for the remainder of the match.
At 141 pounds, Gabe Grahek fought tough against Topher Carton, but unable to force a takedown he fell, 4-2.
Both Andrew Crone and Brock Horwath lost their matches by just three points.
Crone kept the match competitive to the very end, escaping with 1:43 remaining to cut No. 2-ranked Brandon Sorensen’s lead to 5-3. The Badgers’ 149-pounder made multiple attempts to drop his opponent to the mat and tie the score, but Sorensen held tough to win 6-3, with an additional point tacked on for riding time.
Horwath was down, 3-0, against eighth-ranked heavyweight Sam Stoll entering the third period before finally earning his first point with an escape at the 1:30 mark. Stoll countered each of Horwath’s takedown-tries to prevent the score from knotting. The Iowa wrestler earned a riding time point to garner a 4-1 win.
TJ Ruschell traded points with No. 16 Edwin Cooper Jr. for much of the first two periods of the 157-pound match to trail, 4-2, with two minutes still left to wrestle.
In the third period, Cooper Jr. came out strong recording a takedown 20 seconds in. He was granted a penalty point and picked up an extra point for riding time to take the match, 8-2.
Ryan Christensen (174 pounds) and Eric Peissig (197 pounds) fell in major decisions to No. 8 Sammy Brooks (14-6) and No. 3 Nathan Burak (20-7), respectively.
125-pounder Jimmy Jimenez wrapped up Wisconsin’s results, as second-ranked Thomas Gilman won, 23-7, by technical fall.
Wisconsin will head east for the second time this year, taking on Rutgers on Saturday at 6 p.m. before matching up with Maryland at noon on Sunday.

With the match tied at 1-1 in the opening sudden-victory period, Schram managed to finish on a shot to defeat Tolbert by a mere two points (3-1). Lofthouse too kept things close later in the dual against his Cardinal counterpart Walker Dempsey, by holding him scoreless in the second period. Erneste earns Major Decision in dual debut, Mizzou extends dual win streak to 36

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Wrestling (8-0, 5-0) defeated MAC rival Eastern Michigan (7-4, 2-2), 24-10, Friday at the Hearnes Center to extend its dual win streak to 36 consecutive duals. The Tigers won last five bouts to come from behind and defeat the Eagles.

In the second match of the night, redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa) continued his perfect record in duals (8-0) by beating Derek by way of a major decision, 12-2. Miklus used four takedowns, and an impressive two point near-fall at the end of the first period to earn the win. The victory pushed Miklus’ overall record this season to 12-2.

Next up for the Tigers was junior 197-pounder J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo.). In the only ranked matchup on the night, Cox squared up against No. 14 Anthony Abro. Cox used three takedowns in the first period to establish a lead, and never looked back on his way to a 10-5 victory by decision. The win gave Cox a 17-1 record this season and 7-1 in duals.

Eastern Michigan led 10-7 when redshirt freshman 133-pounder John Erneste (Kansas City, Mo.) earned a 13-2 victory by major decision in his dual debut against Blake Caudill of Eastern Michigan. Erneste had a huge second period due to a pair of near-falls worth four and two points, respectively. Coupled with a pair of takedowns from the first period gave the Park Hill High School product more than enough for the major decision victory.

Redshirt junior 141-pounder Matt Manley (Perry, Okla.) kept the momentum in Mizzou’s favor with a 5-3 victory by decision over Kyle Springer. The victory added to Manley’s pristine dual record, making him 7-0 with an overall record of 21-4. Mizzou led 14-10 following the bout.

Redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) put another notch in his undefeated record by defeating Nicholas Barber 2-0 by decision. The only points scored in the match were an escape by Mayes with 1:27 left and a point at the end for riding time. With a 17-10 lead, Mizzou sent out redshirt senior 157-pounder Le’Roy Barnes (Belton, Mo) to face Devan Marry. Barnes used a two near-falls in the final period to get the victory by major decision, 12-1. Barnes is now 19-5 this season and 2-1 in duals. The win padded the team’s lead to 21-10 going into the final match.

The final bout of the day was won by redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.), 8-4. Lewis used a takedown late in the third period, as well as a point for riding time to clinch the victory. With the win, Lewis improved his record to 16-3 and 6-1 in duals. The victory secured the dual win for Mizzou by the final score of 24-10.

The Tigers hit the road for its next contest against No. 19 Central Michigan. The dual will begin at 3 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN3.
