Wrestling Takes Down Duke, 24-14

Philadelphia, Pa. ? The Drexel wrestling squad defeated Duke, 24-14, for its first home victory of the season. The Dragons improve to 5-13 overall, while the Blue Devils move to 5-10 on the season.

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley managed to overcome a late 18-10 deficit to defeat Boise State 23-18 in come-from-behind fashion Saturday evening in front of 1,785 fans at the PE Building. The victory marked UVU's (4-6, 0-0 WWC) third straight home win over the Broncos (3-7, 2-3 Pac-12).

Ninth-ranked J.T. Felix gave BSU a late 18-10 lead after pinning UVU freshman Chasen Tolbert then gave UVU its first lead of the contest by pinning Ben DeMuelle just 49-seconds into his bout. Tolbert picked up the quick fall after catching DeMuelle in a cradle.

With the Wolverines holding to a slim 20-18 advantage, senior 141-pounder and Boise native Avery Garner took the mat for UVU to take on three-time NCAA qualifier Brian Owen. Garner didn't waste any time as he came out looking to score right out of the chute. The UVU senior picked up two first-period takedowns to jump out to a 4-1 lead in the final match of the evening. After a scoreless second period, Garner then finished off the victory with another takedown in the final period to pick up a huge 6-3 win over Owen.

"We knew there were going to be a lot of close matches tonight," UVU head coach Greg Williams said. "We didn't expect to lose a couple of the matches that we wound up dropping, but I was very pleased with how our final three guys wrestled. Jade and Chasen gave us the spark that we needed and Avery really capped it off for us."

Boise State jumped out to a 12-0 advantage in the early stages of the contest after winning the first three matches. The Wolverines countered, however, with three straight wins of their own to make it a 12-10 affair after six bouts.

Senior 174-pounder Derek Thomas capped the rally with a 5-3 overtime win over Cody Dixon. Thomas trailed Dixon 3-2 with seconds remaining in the third period but Thomas was awarded a point for stalling after Dixon tried to flee the mat. The Wolverine sophomore then won the bout with a takedown in the first sudden victory period.

In all, the Wolverines won six of the 10 bouts to pick up the victory over the Broncos.

"We dealt with some adversity tonight with Derek Thomas really came through for us with his overtime victory," added Williams. "I'm proud of this team. This team has done of nice job of being able to battle through a number of misfortunes and keep their chins up."

The victory marked Utah Valley's second of the season over a Pac-12 opponent.

UVU will remain home next week to begin its Western Wrestling Conference slate against South Dakota State on Thursday and No. 21 North Dakota State on Friday. Utah Valley will then hit the road the following week to face Northern Colorado (Feb. 12), Air Force (Feb. 14) and Wyoming (Feb. 15). The Wolverines will then return home to host the 2014 NCAA West Regional/WWC Championships in the UCCU Center on March 8.

"This weekend was very intense and crazy," Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. "Our guys fought hard. We made some technical mistakes this weekend and we saw a lot of things that we need to get better at, but I was really pleased with our guys' fight and commitment out there. That wasn't a problem. I just thought we made some silly mistakes that we don't typically make. That's a lot easier to approach as a coach. You can't fix heart, and I'm proud of my guys' heart this weekend."

Joseph Martinez (R-So., Platteville, Colo.), Joe Spisak (R-Jr., Boiling Springs, Pa.), Blaise Butler (R-So., Belvidere, Ill.), Nick Sulzer (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio), Stephen Doty (R-Sr., St. Louis, Mo.), James Suvak (R-Fr., Parma Heights, Ohio) and Zach Nye (R-So., Enola, Pa.) each picked up wins for UVa. Spisak and Doty pinned their foes, while Sulzer and Butler both won by major decision.

Bucknell (7-9) took the opening bout when Paul Petrov held off a late push from Nick Herrmann (So., Amarillo, Texas) to win 5-4 at 125 pounds. Martinez knotted the score by controlling throughout in a 5-0 decision at 133; he piled up 4:05 in riding time as he dominated from the top.

UVa quickly took the lead for good at 141 as Spisak, ranked 15th nationally, needed just 27 seconds to put Connor Lapresi on his back and stick him for the pin. It marked Spisak's first fall of the year.

Bucknell scored an upset victory at 149 as Victor Lopez was strong from the top position in downing UVa's Gus Sako (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio), 7-6. After Lopez maintained control for the full second period, Sako took a 6-4 lead early in the third with a takedown, but Lopez reversed him and then rode out the period to build the riding time over a minute and claim the decisive bonus point.

UVa won the next five weight classes. Ranked 15th nationally, Butler started the run with a 12-3 major decision over Ray Schlitt at 157 to run his record to 15-6 on the year. Sulzer, the No. 2 ranked wrestler at 165 pounds, then racked up nine takedowns in a dominating 20-8 major decision over Rustin Barrick.

Paul Petrov, Victor Lopez and Joe Stolfi posted wins in both ends of the doubleheader for the Bison. Petrov has won nine of his last 10 bouts at 125 pounds, while Stolfi has won nine a row. Lopez has a five-bout winning streak and his victory against Virginia was opposite Gus Sako, who is ranked ninth nationally according to Intermat and brought a strong 15-1 record into the bout.

"Victor's win against Virginia was probably the best win this year by one of our guys," commented Bison head coach Dan Wirnsberger after the match that ended in a 7-6 decision in favor of Lopez.

Lopez, a freshman, is no stranger to defeating ranked opponents having upended top-20 opponents from Oklahoma State and Oklahoma in the same day earlier this year.

Bucknell won seven of the 10 bouts against George Mason (6-12) with Grim Gonzalez (133), Rustin Barrick (165), Rory Bonner (184) and Tyler Lyster (197) joining Petrov, Lopez and Stolfi in the winner's circle. Petrov and Barrick recorded major decisions, while Lopez posted his third pin of the year. Bonner avenged an earlier dual loss to Ryan Hembury with a 12-7 decision.

In the afternoon, Petrov and Lopez registered wins by decision, while Stolfi concluded the match and day with his 17th pin of the year and the 26th of his three-year career. He is in third place on Bucknell's single-season pins list and seventh on the career ledger, two falls behind sixth-place Ron Wellman. Virginia (15-3) had five ranked grapplers in its lineup.

The Bison will be idle until next Sunday, Feb. 9, when they do the two dual matches in two different locations in the same day once again. Bucknell will wrestle at Army (West Point, N.Y.) at 2 p.m. and then travel to Fairfield, Conn., for a 7 p.m. match at Sacred Heart.

VICTOR LOPEZ NAMED BISON ATHLETE & EIWA WRESTLER OF THE WEEK

Freshman Posted 3-0 Record and Win Over Top-10 Opponent

LEWISBURG, Pa. ? Freshman 149-pounder Victor Lopez (Poway, Calif./Poway) was named both the Bison Athlete of the Week and the EIWA Wrestler of the Week on Monday after a strong 3-0 weekend performance to help the Bucknell wrestling team to a 2-1 mark against difficult opponents American, George Mason and No. 13 Virginia.

Lopez was named the Bison Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, while it is his first career EIWA honor. Teammate Joe Stolfi earned EIWA Wrestler of the Week honors two weeks ago, giving the Bison two of the last three honorees.

Lopez concluded his unblemished weekend with what Bison head coach Dan Wirnsberger said was the biggest win of the year by a Bucknell (7-9, 3-2 EIWA) wrestler with a 7-6 victory over No. 9 Gus Sako of Virginia. Sako entered the bout with an impressive 15-1 mark. The win over Sako was Lopez's third this season over a ranked opponent as he upended top-20 foes from Oklahoma State and Oklahoma on the same day in mid-November.

Ranked tied for third on the team with 17 wins this season, Lopez also posted a 9-5 decision against American's Mark Cirello and he pinned George Mason's Ryan Hunsberger in 5:20 this weekend. Both of those individual outcomes helped propel the Bison to team victories.

One of five freshmen in Bucknell's regular starting lineup, Lopez is 17-15 this year with a 9-7 mark in duals. He has 13 wins by decision and three by fall and his three victories against ranked opponents is a team-best. Lopez has won five consecutive bouts and has posted three winning streaks of at least three bouts this season.

Lopez and his Bison teammates will be back in action Sunday, Feb. 9, when they travel to West Point, N.Y., and Fairfield, Conn., to square off against Army (2 p.m.) and Sacred Heart (7 p.m.), respectively.

No. 12 Ohio State Rallies to Defeat No. 24 Purdue, 16-15

Buckeyes win final four matches via decisions to edge Boilermakers

COLUMBUS, Ohio
? After dropping five of its six opening bouts at No. 24 Purdue Monday night, the 12th ranked Ohio State wrestling team won its final four matches via decisions to edge the Boilermakers, 16-15, at Holloway Gymnasium in West Lafayette, Ind. Ohio State improves to 8-4 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten, while Purdue drops to 6-6 overall and 1-6 in the league.

Redshirt-junior and third-ranked Logan Stieber's major decision victory vs. Danny Sabatello at 141 pounds proved to be the difference maker as both teams won five matches on the night. The only wrestler to score bonus points for either team, Stieber jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a pair of takedowns and a 2-point nearfall after the first period. With both wrestlers in the neutral position to start the second period, Stieber once again took Sabatello down and turned the Boilermaker on his back for 3 back points. By the end of the third period, Stieber had scored an escape and accrued riding time.

Joining Stieber in the win column was No. 14 Mark Martin (174 pounds), No. 10 Kenny Courts (184 pounds), No. 8 Nick Heflin (197 pounds) and Nick Tavanello (HWT).

With Ohio State trailing Purdue, 15-4, Martin, a redshirt-sophomore began the Buckeye rally with his 5-4 decision vs. Patrick Kissel. Leading Kissel, 4-3, to start the third period, Martin was marked with back-to-back stalling calls that tied the score at 4-all. However, Martin's riding time lifted him to his 21st win of the season.

Up next at 184 pounds, Martin's classmate Courts used three takedowns, a reversal and riding time to defeat Tanner Lynde, who was limited to three escapes and a penalty point, in his 9-4 victory.

Wrestling in his third overtime match of the season, Heflin, a senior, was an 8-6 winner against No. 14 Braden Atwood. A takedown in the extra period by Heflin secured his 15th victory of the season after both wrestlers entered sudden victory knotted up at 6 apiece. With Heflin up 6-5 in the third period, a late escape by Atwood tied the score, forcing the match into overtime.

Having cut Purdue's lead to two points (15-13) before the final match which pitted heavyweights Tavanello and Boilermaker Alex White, the Buckeyes simply needed the win to garner their eighth victory of the season overall and third in the Big Ten. With both wrestlers scoreless in the first and second periods, the Buckeye redshirt-freshman scored an escape and compiled riding time in his 2-0 win.

In other matches, redshirt-freshman and No. 15 Nick Roberts dropped a 5-3 decision to Camden Eppert to open the night at 125 pounds. No. 5 and redshirt-sophomore Johnni DiJulius faced No. 15 Cashe Quiroga and lost, 7-5, in the 133-pound bout. Between 149-165 pounds, senior Ian Paddock lost, 5-3, to Brandon Nelsen, redshirt-junior Randy Languis suffered a 3-1 setback to Alex Griffin and senior Joe Grandominico fell to Pat Robinson, 8-3.

Ohio State returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Michigan State at Massillon Perry High School.

RUWR Assistant Molinaro Wins Dave Schultz Memorial International

Molinaro takes first place at MFS 65 KG

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 3, 2013) ? The Rutgers wrestling team's own Frank Molinaro took first place at 65 KG in MFS at the 2014 Dave Schultz Memorial International on Jan. 31 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The match ended at 1-1, but Molinaro scored last after Gomez went scoreless after being put on the shot clock for passivity.

Taking the Desert by Storm
Stanford ties school record for dual wins

TEMPE, Ariz. ? The Stanford wrestling team notched two wins in the state of Arizona, Monday, defeating Grand Canyon (26-6) and Pac-12 foe Arizona State (22-10). The Cardinal improves to 15-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Antelopes drop to 11-5 on the year, while the Sun Devils fall to 6-7 and 1-1 in the Pac-12.

Stanford's 15 duals wins on the year ties the school record, set by the 1974-75 Cardinal. With three duals remaining on the 2013-14 schedule, this year's squad will have a chance to break that mark.

Stanford opened the day in Phoenix with a 26-6 win at Grand Canyon. The Cardinal won eight of the 10 bouts with redshirt senior Ryan Mango (133 pounds) and redshirt freshman Jim Wilson (165 pounds) scoring bonus points.

True freshman Tommy Pawelski put the Cardinal on top with a 4-1 decision over Grand Canyon's A.J. Salazar at 125 pounds. He scored a takedown in the first period and one in the third to secure his 19th win of the year and moves to 5-4 in duals.

Mango, ranked 10th nationally, notched his first major decision of the day, defeating Lino Estrada 18-5. Leading 5-3 going into the final period, Mango registered three takedowns, five near fall points, an escape and riding time for his 21st win of the year.

Grand Canyon posted wins at 141 and 149 pounds to cut the Stanford lead to 7-6 after four bouts. Redshirt freshman Peter Galli turned things around for the Cardinal with a 5-2 decision over Bryant Wood at 157 pounds. Trailing 2-1 going into the third period, Galli chose to start in the down position. After scoring an escape, he tacked on a takedown and secured riding time for his 10th win of the year.

Wilson collected his fifth major decision of the season with an 11-1 win over Juan Carlos Maynes. Wilson scored a first-period takedown and recorded two near fall points for the early lead. After Maynes chose to start the second period, Wilson turned him for three near fall points to add to his lead. He finished him off with an escape, a takedown and riding time.

At 174 pounds, senior Kyle Meyer held off Martin Fabbian with a 2-0 decision. There was no score in the first period and Meyer rode Fabbian for the entire second period. He scored an escape in the third and finished with riding time in his favor to collect his 20th win of the season.

Redshirt freshman Zach Nevills tallied his 15th win of the year with a 7-2 decision against Grand Canyon's Austin Guan. Nevills scored a takedown in the first period and turned Guan for two near fall points in the second to take a 4-0 advantage. Choosing to start in the down position in the third, Nevills scored an escape early, but gave up a takedown in the period.

Senior 197-pounder Dan Scherer, who is ranked 19th nationally, shut out Marcus Haughian 3-0 to improve to 16-3 on the year and 11-2 in duals. He registered a reversal in the second period and locked up riding time in the victory.

Redshirt freshman Josh Marchok finished things off for the Cardinal in the dual's most exciting bout at heavyweight. The Schaumberg, Ill., native scored a takedown in overtime to defeat Peter Anguiano 8-6. Marchok improved to 15-9 on the year and 12-5 in duals.

Against the Sun Devils on the Pac-12 Networks, Stanford captured wins in seven of 10 bouts to knock off the eighth team this season that bested the Cardinal a year ago.

Sophomore Evan Silver recorded his 18th win of the year with a 3-2 decision over Ares Carpio at 125 pounds. The Chevy Chase, Md., native recorded a first period takedown and an escape in the third to seal the win.

Mango added to the team score with his second major decision of the day and seventh on the year. He defeated Kalin Goodsite, 14-6, to improve to 22-3 overall and 16-1 in duals. Leading 6-3 at the start of the third period, Mango secured a reversal and then let Goodsite go. After scoring another takedown, Mango earned three near fall points and just narrowly missed out on the fall.

The Sun Devils got on the scoreboard at 141 pounds as Matt Kraus recorded a 7-1 decision over sophomore Peter Russo. Stanford senior Donovan Halpin picked the team back up with a 3-1 decision over Preston McCalmon at 149 pounds. He scored all of his points in the second period and then held on for the win.

At 157 pounds, ASU's Joel Smith finished with a 10-4 decision over senior Bret Baumbach to cut the Stanford lead to 10-6.

Wilson pushed the lead back to seven (13-6) with a 6-1 decision over Nick Rex at 165 pounds. Ranked No. 18 in the nation, Wilson registered two takedowns, an escape and riding time to move into fifth-place on the Cardinal's freshman wins list with 28.

Meyer improved to 2-0 on the day with a gutsy come-from-behind win over Ray Waters at 174 pounds. Trailing 6-3 going into the final period, Meyer started in the down position and quickly registered an escape. He then tallied a takedown to tie the score and finished Waters off with three near fall points. Meyer moves to 21-10 on the year and 12-4 in duals.

The Sun Devils scored their final points of the dual at 184 pounds, where Blake Stauffer posted a 10-2 major decision against Nevills.

Scherer then sealed the dual win for the Cardinal with a 6-4 decision against Josh DaSilveria at 197 pounds. Tied 4-4 in the third period, Scherer scored the escape and finished with 1:11 of riding time to notch his 17th win of the year.

In the final bout of the night, Marchok again needed extra time to record the win, defeating Chace Eskam 7-5 in sudden victory. Down 4-3 in the third period, Marchok was awarded one point for stalling on Eskam. After an escape by Eskam, Marchok again tallied a point due to stalling by ASU to force the extra period. It didn't take long as Marchok registered a takedown in 13 seconds to end the match.

Stanford remains on the road, travelling to San Luis Obispo, Calif., Sunday, Feb. 9 for duals against South Dakota State and Cal Poly. The Cardinal's final dual of the year will be at Northwestern on Feb. 16.

Duke (6-10) gave up 12 points to Gardner-Webb (6-13) with forfeits at 125 and 141, but dominated the action on the mat otherwise to pick up the dual victory. The win is the 25th all-time and the third straight over the Bulldogs, which forfeited at 133 pounds.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

UVU holds on to take WWC opener over South Dakota State

Senior 174-pounder Monte Schmalhaus broke a 15-15 tie with a 6-2 win in the final match of the contest.

Complete Results[/B]

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University pulled out an 18-15 victory in its Western Wrestling Conference opener over South Dakota State on Thursday afternoon in the PE Building as senior Monte Schmalhaus managed to pull out the decisive final match.

With the score tied at 15-15 after the first nine bouts, Schmalhaus and John Nething II squared off in a winner-take-all, 174-pound bout. Schmalhaus took an early lead with a takedown midway through the first period. An escape in the second period kept Schmalhaus in front despite a Nething takedown in the same frame. With the score 3-2 entering the third period, Schmalhaus clinched the win for UVU with an escape and a late takedown to earn a 6-2 decision. The decisive three points settled things in favor of the Wolverines, 18-15, and made Utah Valley 1-0 in the young Western Wrestling Conference season and gave the Jacks their first WWC defeat.

"It was a great win and we're glad that Monte was able to seal the deal for us. He wrestled well tonight did a nice job of getting the job done when it mattered the most," UVU assistant coach Justin Ruiz said. "We had a few opportunities earlier in the contest where we could've pulled out a couple of major decisions that would've given us a little larger cushion. But overall I was pleased that the majority of our guys fought hard and really got after it."

Opening the match at 184-pounds, UVU's (5-6) Ethan Smith and SDSU's (3-6, 2-1 WWC) Ben Schwery needed double overtime to decide the bout. Tied at 1-1 after each registered an escape within regulation, the stalemate stood through an overtime period and the first tiebreaker when Smith rode Schwery out, not allowing an escape. In the second tiebreaker, Smith was able to clinch the victory when he tallied an escape in the waning seconds to grab a 2-1 win.

The Jackrabbits' Trey Hable opened the 197-pound bout with a takedown of Utah Valley's Derek Thomas, but Thomas manufactured an escape late in the first period and again in the second to make the score 2-2 entering the third and final round. Hable regained the lead with an escape to start the frame, but Thomas grabbed a 4-3 advantage with a two-point takedown. Another Hable escape in the final minute left things all square at 4-4 with under 30 seconds to go. With the clock ticking under 10 seconds, Thomas exploded for another takedown to seal the bout 6-4 and double the Wolverine team lead at 6-0.

An SDSU pin in the heavyweight bout promptly tied the dual at 6-apiece, but 17th-ranked Jade Rauser (125 pounds) put UVU back in front with a 9-4 decision over Ben Gillette of SDSU. Rauser did the bulk of his work in the first period, using a takedown and a three-point nearfall to take a 5-1 lead. Things got interesting in the third round when Gillette battled back to within one at 5-4, but Rauser took the win with an escape, a takedown, and an additional point after two minutes of riding time.

Chasen Tolbert (133) then extended the Wolverine advantage to 12-6 after earning a 9-4 decision over Brance Simms. Tolbert held a 7-1 third period lead over Simms, ultimately earning the decision by five points after a late escape and over 3:30 worth of riding time.

The reigning WWC Wrestler of the Week Avery Garner started the 141-pound bout with a bang, claiming two points after a swift takedown of SDSU's Eric Orozco. An escape and another takedown put Garner ahead 5-0 entering the third period where one more takedown put the bout out of reach. Garner went on to claim an 8-4 decision behind almost three minutes of riding time.

That decision put UVU ahead 15-6 -- a lead that quickly vanished as SDSU took the next three bouts by decision. Alex Kocer topped Curtis Abner Cook at 165 pounds momentarily tie the dual.

In all, UVU managed to win six of the 10 bouts to take the contest by three points over South Dakota State.

The win by the Wolverines marked Utah Valley's seventh straight dual victory over the Jacks.

UVU will have a quick turnaround as it will continue conference action against No. 20 North Dakota State Friday at 7 p.m. in the PE Building. The contest will not only mark Senior Night for Utah Valley but also the Wolverines' final home regular season dual of the season.

"The North Dakota State dual will be tough. Every match will be a battle for seeding for the upcoming conference tournament and also to see if our guys can knock off a couple of ranked opponents," Ruiz added. "They (NDSU) are a very talented team and we've definitely got to bring our `A' game to finish on top."
