Four Bobcats ranked in the Top 15

Feb. 14, 2014

ATHENS, Ohio ? The Ohio University wrestling team placed seven wrestlers in the first Rating Percentage Index (RPI) for the 2013-14 season.

Sophomore Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) earned the Bobcats' top ranking, coming in at No. 9. Wellington owns a 27-3 record and has won his last seven decisions.

Senior Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio), sophomore Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) and junior Tywan Claxton (South Euclid, Ohio) also checked in among the Top 15 in their weight classes as they ranked 11th, 13th and 15th, respectively.

Junior Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio), sophomore Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) and freshman Noah Forrider (Marysville, Ohio) ranked 24th, 28th and 33rd, respectively.

The final rankings and RPI will be two of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2014 NCAADivision I Wrestling Championships.

Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots for their respective qualifying tournaments for the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class.

To be eligible for an RPI ranking, a wrestler must have a minimum of 17 Division I matches at a given weight class. The top 33 wrestlers in the RPI are listed for each weight class.

WRESTLING WRAPS UP HOME SCHEDULE WITH 36-9 WIN OVER VMI
Lyster and Stolfi End Match with Back-to-Back Pins

LEWISBURG, Pa. ? The Bucknell wrestling team closed out its home schedule in dominating fashion Saturday afternoon, defeating VMI 36-9 in Davis Gym. The Bison won eight of the nine contested bouts and five of those eight wins were for bonus points.

Tyler Lyster and Joe Stolfi ended the match with back-to-back pins, while Paul Petrov, Victor Lopez and Robert Schlitt each posted a tech fall to propel Bucknell to its ninth win of the season.

"It was good to bounce back today after last night's loss to Franklin & Marshall," said Bison head coach Dan Wirnsberger. "We were watching for how the guys would respond after a performance like that. We put it on them to show their competitive side and they did that."

Saturday's matchup was the first-ever meeting between Bucknell (9-11) and VMI (3-15). Bison seniors Bob Hauser and Stephen McPeek were honored prior to the match during a Senior Day ceremony, which was followed by a Military Appreciation Day recognition by the Bucknell wrestling program.

Petrov, who improved to 27-7 on the year, wasted no time staking the Bison to an early lead as he won by a commanding 23-7 margin at 125 pounds. It was his sixth consecutive win and his team-high third tech fall of the year.

On Senior Day, Hauser followed with his fourth win of the year, a 4-1 decision at 133. He scored the first points with an early takedown, posted a second-period escape and earned the riding time point.

"Wrestling is a tough sport and Bob and Stephen both stuck it out all four years," said Wirnsberger. "To have Bob in the right spot this week to fill in after some injuries cropped up, and get the win, it means a lot to him and to our program."

After a forfeit at 141 due to an injury to Connor Lapresi, Bucknell's lead was trimmed to 8-6. However, Victor Lopez (149) posted a 17-1 tech fall and Ray Schlitt (157) followed with a 9-4 decision to make it 16-6 on the scoreboard.

Rustin Barrick then went to overtime for the second consecutive day and after ending with a pin Friday at Franklin & Marshall, came out on the wrong side of a 6-4 decision against Tedd Gottwald.

The Bison then won the final four bouts with three for bonus points, including Robert Schlitt's 15-0 shutout of Jake Koch.

Lyster and Stolfi sent the Bison home schedule out on a high note with back-to-back first-period pins. It was Lyster's fifth fall of the season, while Stolfi recorded his 20th pin of the year to tie Brian Pitzer's 15-year-old school record.

"It's always nice to have guys like Lyster and Stolfi at the end of your lineup," remarked Wirnsberger. "We are comfortable and confident with them back there. I am proud of how Tyler bounced back after his loss last night."

Bucknell will wrap up the regular season on the road next Friday, Feb. 21, at Binghamton. Start time for that EIWA match is 7 p.m. in Vestal, N.Y.

Cowboys Tame Wolverines On Senior Night, 32-6

Mendenhall earns big win over tough opponent

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 15, 2014) Redshirt freshman Cole Mendenhall highlighted another big night for the University of Wyoming wrestling team Saturday as the Cowboys defeated Utah Valley, 32-6.

The 141-pound Poke outworked UVU's Avery Garner at 141 pounds in an 8-4 decision. Garner was rated 33rd in the latest NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings, released Feb. 13. Mendenhall, along with seven other Cowboys, claimed victory to push UW (5-6 overall, 3-1 Western Wrestling Conference) to its fourth-straight win to stay alive in the race for the WWC dual title. The contest wrapped up the home dual slate for Wyoming.

"Overall it was a dominating team score, but I really felt like we had several guys who were too conservative," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "We had a couple matches where we won but we went scoreless in the first period, so those are not great things to see right now. But Cole Mendenhall was an example of just the opposite. He didn't stand around and wait for the kid to make a mistake or take him down. He went out there and got the shot."

UW had decision wins from juniors Shane Woods (197), Brandon Richardson (149), Andy McCulley (157) and redshirt freshman Benjamin Stroh at 184. The Pokes got bonus points thanks to a pin from sophomore heavyweight Tanner Harms, a forfeit win for junior Tyler Cox (125), and a technical fall from junior Dakota Friesth at 165.

"Tanner looked good. We've been emphasizing blowing through our shots and he did that," Branch said. "I liked what I out of Dakota Friesth, too. He showed a little attitude at the end."

UW began the night by honoring the lone senior on its roster, 141-pound Kyle Komata. He was recognized before the first match for his contributions to the program over the past four seasons.

The Cowboys will wrestle their final dual contest of the regular season Friday on the road versus North Dakota State. Matches will begin at 6 p.m. MT from the Bison Sports Arena.

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Utah Valley wrestling team mustered just two wins in its regular season finale Saturday at Wyoming as it fell 32-6 to the Cowboys (5-6, 3-1 WWC). With the loss, the Wolverines ended their season 6-9 overall and 2-3 in Western Wrestling Conference duals.

The dual meet began at 197 pounds and Wyoming took a quick 15-0 advantage after winning the first three bouts of the contest, including one by fall and another by forfeit. Sophomore Chasen Tolbert then got UVU on the board with a 7-1 decision at 133 pounds over UW's Gunnar Woodburn. The win marked Tolbert's 13th of the season and pulled the Wolverines' to within 15-3, but that was as close as Utah Valley would get as the Cowboys' won five of the final six bouts to take the contest.

With UW later leading 29-3, senior 174-pounder Monte Schmalhaus came through for UVU in the ninth match of the contest with a 4-0 decision victory over Brent Havlik. Schmalhaus blanked Havlik with a first-period takedown, a second-frame escape and an additional riding time point.

Schmalhaus' win would be the last for the Wolverines, however, as No. 18 Benjamin Stroh capped the dual for the Pokes with a 4-0 win over Ethan Smith at 184 pounds.

The loss marked Utah Valley's second in as many nights, as it fell at Air Force on Friday by a score of 24-13. It also concluded UVU's three-match road swing through the Front Range with a 1-2 record as the Wolverines began the trip with a 25-12 victory over Northern Colorado on Wednesday.

UVU will now turn its attention to the postseason, as it will host the NCAA West Regional/WWC Championships for the first time in program history at the UCCU Center on Saturday, March 8. That day the Wolverines will try to qualify as many wrestlers as they can for the 2014 NCAA Championships that will be held March 20-22 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City.

Terps Run Past Wolfpack in ACC Finale

Sheptock, Goodwin notch big wins

COLLEGE PARK, Md. ? No. 1 Jimmy Sheptock and Frank Goodwin impressed as the Maryland wrestling team defeated N.C. State, 23-14, in its final match in the ACC Saturday night at Comcast Pavilion.

Goodwin swung the match for the Terps (7-8, 3-3 ACC) with a pin of Brian Hamman at 149 pounds. Sheptock punctuated the meet with an easy tech fall over Shayne Brady.

"I thought we had a little more fight and a little more pride in the last ACC match," head coach Kerry McCoy said. "I told them before the match that we wanted to go out the right way, and they did."

The dual started at 197 pounds with No. 8 Christian Boley and KaRonne Jones. The Maryland senior was able to secure a third period takedown to seal a 3-2 victory.

At heavyweight, No. 6 Spencer Myers and No. 7 Nick Gwiazdowski contested a match that held massive national implications. After Gwiazdowski dominated the first two periods, Myers put the N.C. State standout in a pinning predicament in the third period, but was not able to finish. Gwiazdowski escaped and survived a few Myers takedown attempts to seal an 11-8 victory.

Billy Rappo got the Terps back on track at 125 pounds. The sophomore was alert in a number of tough scrambles and held on for a 3-2 victory. Shyheim Brown also won a close match, defeating Chris Wilkes, 4-2, to give the Terps a 9-3 lead.

Goodwin then stepped up for the Terps at 149. After a number of close calls throughout the match, Goodwin locked up Hamman and pinned him at 6:05 to the roar of the Comcast Pavilion crowd.

The Wolfpack followed with a three-match run, No. 18 Thomas Gantt and Nifel Jones took major decision victories over Ben Dorsay and Tyler Manion, respectively, before No. 17 Pete Renda outlasted Ty Snook, 7-2.

Sheptock then closed the dual strong at 184 pounds. The senior raced to a 16-0 victory on his birthday and extended his unbeaten mark to 23-0 to give the Terps a 23-14 win.

The dual marked the Terps' final contest as a member of the ACC. Maryland holds the most ACC Championships with 24 and has produced the most individual ACC champions.

Maryland returns to action on Sunday against American. Action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Comcast Pavilion with senior day ceremonies held just before the first match.

Cowboys Fall to No. 2 Penn State, 23-12

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? The No. 7 Oklahoma State wrestling squad is now 9-5 on the season after falling to No. 2 Penn State on the road, 23-12.

In a dual that seemed to go back and forth through the first seven bouts, the Pokes picked up wins in four of the day's 10 matches, including a top-five matchup at 174 pounds.

Eddie Klimara quieted the crowd of more than 6,500 in the first match of the day, taking down No. 2 Nico Megaludis twice in the first period. However, Klimara gave up three takedowns in the second period and another in the third to drop the bout, 11-7.

No. 4 Jon Morrison tied up the team score, 3-3, when he shut out No. 17 James Gulibon for the second time this year. This time the score was 2-0, where the only points scored was a double-leg takedown by Morrison in the first period.

At 141 pounds, Anthony Collica, ranked 19th in the country, took on second-ranked and undefeated Zain Retherford. Collica held off the freshman phenom, allowing no scoring until the third period when Retherford escaped, giving PSU a lead in the team score.

No. 11 Josh Kindig balanced it out once again for the Cowboys, taking out No. 19 Zack Beitz, 5-3, at 149 pounds. Kindig scored the only takedowns of the match, picking up one in the second and third periods.

A win at 157 pounds gave OSU its first lead of the day. No. 2 Alex Dieringer took on No. 11 Dylan Alton. Alton struck first with a quick takedown in the first period, but it was Dieringer's takedown and back points shortly after that gave the sophomore the advantage and the win.

The Nitanny Lions tied the team score with a 5-2 decision from No. 1 David Taylor over No. 5 Tyler Caldwell in the day's first top-five matchup.

No. 2 Chris Perry and No. 5 Matt Brown met up for a rematch and the second top-five bout of the dual. Similar to that of the 2013 NCAA 174-pound final between the two, the match went into overtime with the bout tied, 2-2, at the end of regulation. With no scoring in the first one-minute sudden victory period, the match went into a tiebreaker with neither guy getting up from the bottom. After another scoreless sudden victory period, Perry rode Brown out in the 30-second tiebreaker and tallied a quick escape in the second period of the tiebreaker to walk away with the 3-2 win.

That would be the final win for the Cowboys as the Nitanny Lions went on to pick up bonus points in the remaining three matches and secure the team victory.

The Cowboys return to Stillwater, Okla., to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

UCO's Dauphin, Rowell win conference wrestling titles

HAYS, Kan. (Feb. 16) ? Cory Dauphin tied a 30-year-old school record and Casy Rowell knocked off the defending national champion in capturing individual championships to lead Central Oklahoma at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament here Sunday.

The No. 5-ranked Bronchos finished third in the rugged seven-team event with 67.5 points. No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney won its second straight league title with 109 points, followed by No. 7 Lindenwood (84.5), UCO and No. 12 Fort Hays State (63).

Dauphin stretched his winning streak to 47 in a row in rolling to the 157-pound title, tying the school mark set by Ronnie James from 1982-84, while Rowell toppled No. 1-ranked Daniel DeShazer of UNK at 133 for his 125th career victory.

UCO also got third-place showings from 141 Dustin Reed, 184 Znick Ferrell and heavyweight Cody Dauphin, while 125 Josh Breece, 149 Jordan Basks and 197 Garrett Henshaw all took fourth.

"Overall I thought we actually had a pretty good day," head coach David James said. "Obviously there's still room for improvement, but I saw a little spark from some of our individuals that we need to take that next step.

"Casy and Cory both did a great job. They wrestled tough, smart matches in the finals and showed a lot of the grit and grind that we like to see. It was a good, competitive tournament and it's something we can build on for the regional.

Rowell had a pair of third-period takedowns in his big finals win, getting the first on the edge of the mat with1:15 left for a 4-3 lead. DeShazer tied it with a quick escape, but Rowell scored on another single-leg shot with 15 seconds remaining to make it 6-4 before giving up a last-second escape.

The Duncan senior followed a first-round bye with a 7-4 semifinal win over Lindenwood's Matt Katusin, overcoming a 4-1 first-period deficit for that victory.

Dauphin capped a three-match march to his second straight league title with a dominating 8-2 finals rout of UNK's Chase White, who handed Dauphin his last loss midway through the 2012-13 season.

Dauphin took control with a takedown early in the first period, scored a near-fall in the second and added a takedown in the third while piling up more than three minutes riding time. The defending national champion had 6-2 and 10-2 wins in making the finals and was named MIAA Wrestler of the Year after the tournament.

Watson dropped a 6-5 finals decision to UNK's Brock Smith, who has handed Watson both losses in a 31-2 season. Watson trailed 6-3 entering the third period before getting a takedown with a minute left to make it 6-5, but he was unable to turn Smith for a winning near-fall.

The Andover, Kan. Junior had a first-period fall and 13-7 semifinal victory in making the finals.

Reed, Ferrell and Cody Dauphin all went 3-1 on the day in finishing third, with each bouncing back from a semifinal loss to take the bronze medal.

Reed fell to No. 4-ranked C.J. Napier 7-5 in the semifinals before winning his next two, recording a first-period fall in the consolation semifinals and then using a third-period takedown and near-fall to pull away for an 8-2 triumph over Lindenwood's Kyle Webb.

Ferrell rebounded from his semifinal loss with 4-0 and 10-3 consolation wins, racking up four takedowns in a 10-3 third-place romp over UNK's Mark Fiala.

Cody Dauphin lost 3-2 to seventh-ranked Steven Butler of Lindenwood in the semis before finishing with back-to-back wins. He had a first-period pin in the consolation semis and then got a takedown 15 seconds into the sudden-victory period to edge UNK's Kelsey Empting 3-1 to avenge an overtime loss earlier this season.
