Birmingham Named SoCon Wrestler of the Month

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Seven wins and six pins in the month of January has earned Davidson wrestler Kevin Birmingham SoCon Wrestler of the Month accolades, as announced by the league office Friday afternoon.

Birmingham compiled a 7-1 overall mark through the first month of 2014, with six of his wins coming by fall. The 149-pounder downed a pair of ranked opponents, pinned No. 24 Justin Arthur of Clarion and No. 27 Matt Frisch of the Citadel. The Sicklerville, N.J. native opened the month by sending Ohio Northern's Steven Feucht to the mat in just 47 seconds to lead the Wildcats to a 23-17 win on January 8.

That pin would prove to be the first of five straight, who went on to stick Arthur, No. 13 Pittsburgh's Jake Keller and Seton Hill's Kevin Laubauch at the Pitt Duals Jan. 12. He then turned his focus to Southern Conference action, pinning Gardner-Webb's Tyler Ziegler. His pin streak came to an end though his winning streak did not as he topped VMI's Shabaka Johns in a 9-7 sudden victory on Jan. 24. Birmingham's lone setback of the month came Jan. 26 when he dropped an 8-7 decision to No. 10 Richard Durso of Franklin & Marshall, though he would pin Frisch the same day.

Birmingham and the Wildcats will take on West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va., Friday evening in a 7:30 p.m. dual.

Branch Earns Dual Win No. 60 In Dominating 41-6 Victory

Six bonus-point wins propel Cowboys over Northern Colorado

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 7, 2014) UW head coach Mark Branch reached a milestone in his coaching career Friday night as the University of Wyoming wrestling team rolled over Northern Colorado, 41-6.

Branch won his 60th dual as UW's head man, thanks to four falls and two major decisions from the Cowboys. He is just the fifth coach in UW history to reach the 60-win plateau. With the win, UW improved to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the Western Wrestling Conference.

"I was pleased with the bonus points we got. From top to bottom, seeing the guys respond with bonus points was the most pleasing thing," Branch said. "I saw guys going out and taking chances, going for falls and back points. We've been emphasizing to them to take chances and good things will happen. It was nice to see them come out of their shell a little bit and have a dominating win."

Branch's cause was aided by junior Andy McCulley, who earned the best win of his season over 19th-ranked Mitchell Polkowske. McCulley's pin of Polkowske at 5:34 in the 157-pound bout tied the dual at 6-all after two matches and jumpstarted a 41-0 run for the Pokes over the remaining eight matches.

"Andy's was a crazy match. He got caught in some bad situations, but didn't lose his focus," Branch said. "He stayed composed and came back strong and had a great reaction on that pin."

Three other Pokes ? redshirt freshmen Benjamin Stroh (184), Gunnar Woodburn (133) and Cole Mendenhall (141) ? secured pins, while redshirt freshman Brent Havlik (174) and junior Shane Woods (197) came away with major decisions.

Junior heavyweight Leland Pfeifer had a nice win over UNC's Henry Chirino, rated 29th in the latest NCAA Coaches Poll, in a gritty 2-1 decision. Wyoming also notched decision victories from juniors Dakota Friesth (165) and Tyler Cox at 125.

The Pokes have a short break before hitting the road to face Air Force on the road Tuesday. Matches begin at 7 p.m. from the Academy.

Duke Resumes ACC Schedule at Maryland Saturday

February 7, 2014

DURHAM, N.C.?The busy February continues for the Duke wrestling team as it resumes its ACC schedule this weekend at Maryland. The Blue Devils and Terrapins dual is set for Feb. 8 at 7 p.m., at Comcast Center Pavilion.

Duke (6-10, 0-3 ACC) is coming off of a 28-19 non-conference victory over Gardner-Webb, while Maryland (5-8, 1-3 ACC) looks to rebound following its 16-15 setback to No. 15 Virginia.

The dual will be streamed live by TerpsTV and can also be seen on GoDuke.com free of charge for Blue Devil Network subscribers. Due to the Maryland men's basketball against Florida State on Saturday, parking lots surrounding Comcast Center will not be open to the general public until 6 p.m. Plan to arrive for the dual after 6 p.m. to avoid parking issues.

Redshirt sophomore Conner Hartmann heads into the ACC bout riding a four-match win streak for the Blue Devils. Duke's 197-pounder climbed back into the rankings this week following a win over No. 14 Brandon Palik of Drexel and is 1-2 against ACC foes this season.

Hartmann will see a familiar opponent in Christian Boley. Ranked eighth, Boley recently returned from injury to upend his counterpart from Virginia. Boley and Hartmann met twice last season, with the Boley coming away with narrow decisions each time.

At 157 pounds, redshirt junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown looks to remain unbeaten in ACC duals. The Duke captain is a team-best 19-8 overall and has won five of his past six matches, with three of those being major decisions.

Trey Adamson, at 174 pounds, is in search of win No. 15 at Maryland, while freshman Jacob Kasper has to battle top-ranked Jim Sheptock of Maryland to pick up his 12th win of the year at 184.

Freshman Connor Bass heads into the weekend with a 1-1 mark against ACC foes and an 11-10 record overall. On a three-match win streak, Bass will go up against a veteran in senior Frank Goodwin. Redshirt sophomore Marcus Cain and senior Brian Self round out Duke's lineup at 165 and heavyweight, respectively.

Self missed the midweek match with the Bulldogs, but returns to the lineup with a 6-12 record and 3-8 mark in duals. Cain, moving up from 149 for this season, has won three of four his past four duals and is aiming to get into the double-digit wins column Saturday against the Terrapins.

Duke continues its ACC slate at North Carolina Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. The dual will be broadcast on ESPN3 from Carmichael Gymnasium.

No. 12 Virginia Wrestling Downs North Carolina, 21-9[/B]

Cavaliers win seven of 10 bouts, highlighted by Spisak upset at 141 pounds

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ? Highlighted by Joe Spisak's upset win over fourth-ranked Evan Henderson at 141 pounds, the 12th-ranked Virginia wrestling team captured a 21-9 victory over North Carolina Friday evening in front of near-capacity crowd at Memorial Gymnasium. In recording their 20th straight home dual triumph, Virginia (16-3, 4-1 ACC) won seven of the 10 individual bouts on Senior Night.

Virginia has not lost a home dual since Nov. 27, 2011, an 18-13 loss to Virginia Tech.

Prior to the dual, Virginia honored seniors Stephen Doty (St. Louis, Mo.), Jon Fausey (Dalmatia, Pa.) and Tanner Hirstine (Greenwood Village, Colo.) in Senior Night ceremonies.

All 10 matches were determined by decision, including a pair in tiebreakers. Points were tough to come by all night, as both teams grinded away while neither allowed any back points. Ranked 16th nationally, Spisak (R-Jr., Boiling Springs, Pa.) scored the big win of the evening, a 4-0 decision against the reigning All-American Henderson, who suffered just his fourth defeat of the season.

"We had some guys banged up going into tonight, and there was a vibe going in that we needed to find a way to win," Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. "I was really proud of the way the guys stepped up. I thought the effort and tenacity, and the way our guys made the wins happen tonight, was really cool to see."

Virginia also picked up wins from Joseph Martinez (R-So., Platteville, Colo.), Blaise Butler (R-So., Belvidere, Ill.), Nick Sulzer (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio), Doty, Zach Nye (R-So., Enola, Pa.) and Ethan Hayes (R-So., New Lebanon, Ohio) to energize the big home crowd.

"We had a great crowd again tonight," Garland said. "The last two ACC matches have been standing room only. There haven't been enough seats for everyone, and that's a good problem to have. I hope we continue to have that problem."

The dual started with the feature match of the evening at 141 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Spisak started in the down position in the second but reversed Henderson and rode out the period. Henderson chose down to start the third, but Spisak maintained the advantage for the full period. Henderson also was penalized for his second stall warning, giving Spisak a penalty point. Spisak piled up 3:19 in riding time for the 4-0 win, his third of the season over a returning All-American.

UNC (5-10, 0-4) knotted the dual at 149 when Christian Barber scored a 4-3 win over Justin Van Hoose (So., Kirksville, Mo.) in the second tiebreaker period. Wrestling up a weight to fill in for an injured Gus Sako, Van Hoose was reversed in the second tiebreaker to snap a 2-2 tie. He scored on a late escape point for the final tally.

UVa won the next three weight classes to move out to a 12-3 edge. Ranked 15th nationally at 157, Butler jumped to a 6-2 lead with three takedowns in the first two periods in winning 6-3 over Jacob Crawford.

Sulzer, No. 2 nationally at 165, was tested in his match with John Michael Staudenmayer. Despite pouncing for a takedown just 15 seconds into the match, Sulzer could not pull away from the pesky Staudenmayer. With 1:36 in riding time, Sulzer clinched his 11th straight victory and upped his record to 28-1 on the season.

Ranked 16th nationally, Doty accumulated 2:54 in riding time as he rolled to an 8-1 win over Scott Marmoll at 174. Doty improved to 23-7 on the year.

The Tar Heels cut into the lead at 184 when Alex Utley won 8-3 over James Suvak (R-Fr., Parma Heights, Ohio), who was filling in for Fausey.

Nye went to a tiebreaker with Frank Abbondanza at 197 pounds before claiming a 3-2 win. Nye reversed Abbondanza early in the first portion of the tiebreaker, then held Abbondanza down for much of the second portion before allowing him to escape late. Nye improved to 16-8 on the season.

Hayes scored a 10-3 win over Bob Coe in the heavyweight bout. He scored a pair of first-period takedowns as he dominated throughout while building 2:48 in riding time.

UNC scored its final win when Nathan Kraisser outlasted Nick Herrmann (So., Amarillo, Texas), 4-3, at 125. Herrmann scored a late first-period takedown to gain the initial points, but Kraisser forged ahead in the second with an escape point followed by a takedown. Herrmann tied the match later in the period when Kraisser was penalized a point for interlocking hands. Herrmann chose the down position in the third, but Kraisser rode out the period to gain the riding-time point and the 4-3 win.

Martinez finished the dual strong for UVa , scoring a third-period takedown to break a 1-1 tie and defeat Troy Heilmann, 3-1, at 133.

UVa wraps up its ACC schedule at 2 p.m. Sunday when it travels to NC State. The Cavaliers conclude the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 16, with a 2 p.m. dual at George Mason.

Cowboys Trample the Roadrunners, 37-6[/B]

STILLWATER, Okla. ? The No. 8 Oklahoma State wrestling team handled CSU Bakersfield on Saturday in Gallagher-Iba Arena, walking away with a dominant 37-6 win. John Smith and his squad improved to 7-4 on the season.

The Pokes put five bonus-point wins, three of which were falls, and it was the third-straight dual where the Cowboys gave up two or fewer wins.

"I thought we looked pretty good," coach John Smith said. "There are definitely some things we need to clean up before tomorrow like getting the weight back and head blocking a little bit more. Overall, it was a pretty good effort. I like the way we ended tonight. Of course, the falls were nice to have."

The bout started at 157 pounds, where second-ranked Alex Dieringer pinned Spencer Hill with less than a minute left in the match to give the Cowboys a 6-0 start.

"I saw (Hill) going for the pancake a couple of times. I eventually caught on and capitalized on it," Dieringer said. "I knew he was going to go for that pancake. I saw an opportunity to do it earlier in the match and didn't execute on it, so I was waiting for it."

Tyler Caldwell, ranked No. 5 in the country, produced his second-straight major decision when he finished off David Meza, 11-2.

No. 2 Chris Perry earned his seventh win over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 18 Bryce Hammond, 5-2.

Redshirt freshman Jordan Rogers had a stellar performance as he was up 13-5 before pinning Sean Pollock in 5:47. It was his 11th fall of the season.

"I was a pinner in high school quite a bit, so when the opportunity arises you've just got to smell the blood," Rogers said. "You have to be ready to take advantage of it. Those opportunities don't come by very much in college, so you've got to take advantage when you can catch a guy on his back."

Cowboy senior and 197-pounder Blake Rosholt returned to competition for the first time in a month after battling a shoulder injury. Rosholt was up on Reuben Franklin for most of the match, but three stalling calls on the Cowboy took the match into overtime, where Rosholt was eventually outlasted, 6-4.

No. 19 Austin Marsden earned his first bonus-point win of the season, when he stuck Roadrunner Alex Encarnacion in 3:53 during the heavyweight bout.

Sophomore Eddie Klimara sealed the dual for OSU with his 19-4 technical fall over Sergio Mendez. Klimara ended the bout after two periods, collecting six takedowns and three nearfalls.

At 133 pounds, Smith called on Brian Crutchmer, a redshirt freshman from Tulsa, Okla. In his varsity debut, Crutchmer scored the first takedown against Jose Mendoza, but he was not able to get off bottom later in the match, resulting in a 13-2 loss for the Poke.

No. 17 Anthony Collica tallied up his 22nd win of the 2013-14 campaign, defeating Ian Nickell, 9-2. The Cowboy came out on top thanks to his three takedowns and a reversal.

The night's final bout provided a thrilling finish for Cowboy fans as No. 10 Josh Kindig came back after trailing 7-2 in the first period to beat Dalton Kelly, 12-9. The redshirt junior scored five points in both the second and the third periods to end up with the W.

"If I could have drawn up that matchup with Kindig any differently, I wouldn't," Smith said. "You like to see someone come back for behind and clean up the mistakes that he made with the scrambles earlier in the match. It was a really good effort match that he probably needed. His legs were underneath him and he was strong in the third, which was the difference in the outcome."

The Cowboys take to the mat Sunday at 2 p.m., meeting up with the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners in the 170th installment of Bedlam. Free pizza will be available at 1 p.m. for students.

Wrestling Defeats Franklin & Marshall for Third Straight Victory

Philadelphia, Pa. ? The Drexel Wrestling team defeated Franklin & Marshall, 25-11, on Saturday night for their third straight victory and second of the weekend. With the win, the Dragons improve to 7-13 overall and 1-4 EIWA while the Diplomats move to 5-6, 1-3.

Tanner Shoap got the Dragons on the board first with a 4-0 decision over Franklin & Marshall's Jason Bing. Kevin Devoy Jr bumped the Drexel lead up to 9-0 by earning a pin at 133 with 26 seconds to go in the first period. The Diplomats took a major decision at 141 that made the score 9-4. Noel Blanco retaliated at 149 with a 3-2 decision that increased the Dragons' lead up to 12-4.

The Diplomats fought back again and picked up a major decision at 157 to come within four team points of Drexel. However, Jason Fugiel's 9-2 decision at 165, Kevin Matyas' 2-1 win at 174, and Bryan Sternlieb's 6-0 victory at 184 secured a deficit the Diplomats could not overcome. Brandon Palik finished out the Dragons' late 4-0 run with a strong 22-8 major decision, putting Drexel on top, 25-8. Franklin & Marshall picked up three more team points with a decision at 285, but it was not enough to surpass the Dragons.

Kerr-Brown Stays Perfect in the ACC in Duke Loss at Maryland

February 8, 2014

COLLEGE PARK, Md.?Duke redshirt junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown remained undefeated in Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling as the Blue Devils fell to Maryland in a dual 37-7 this evening at Comcast Center Pavilion.

Duke (6-11, 0-4 ACC) got off to a fast start with a decision Kerr-Brown and a major decision by redshirt sophomore Marcus Cain to take the 7-0 lead. Maryland (6-8, 2-3 ACC) answered with consecutive pins en route to its second conference win.

Kerr-Brown, unbeaten by ACC foes and 12-4 in duals this year, cruised to the 5-2 decision over Ben Dorsay. Duke's 157-pounder scored the first takedown with 34 seconds left in the first period. Dorsay quickly responded with a reversal, but Kerr-Brown escaped moments later for the 3-2 advantage after three minutes. Holding a one-point edge, Kerr-Brown never looked back, scored an escape in the second period and rode the match out in the third for his career-best 20th win of the year.

At 165 pounds, Cain scored an early takedown and never relinquished control of the match. Building over two minutes of riding time in the first period, the Winston-Salem, N.C. , native used a pair of takedowns in the second for a 6-1 lead and added four more points in the final stanza for his first major decision of the year and 10th overall win. He is now 1-3 in ACC action and 3-4 for his career in conference duals.

Maryland grabbed pins from Matthew Snook and No. 1 Jimmy Sheptock at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively, setting up a rematch at 197 between No. 8 Christian Boley and Duke's Conner Hartmann.

Ranked 19th and riding a four-match win streak, Hartmann was looking to avenge last season's losses to Boley in the ACC Championships and NCAA Championships. As expected, the match was tight throughout the seven minutes with neither wrestler being able to score any shots early.

Boley scored first with an escape in the second period and Hartman matched that in the third to set up an exciting final 1:56. Less than 30 seconds later Boley got a takedown for the 3-1 lead. Duke's 197-pounder quickly escaped to make it 3-2, but was unable to find the winning takedown as he fell to Boley by a single point. It is the third straight match between them to be decided by two or fewer points.

Maryland added victories in the final five bouts, including narrow triumphs over Duke rookies Xaviel Ramos and Connor Bass at 141 and 149 pounds.

Duke continues its ACC schedule Tuesday at North Carolina. The dual is set for 7 p.m., and can be seen on ESPN3.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

#15 Illini Defeat #9 Northwestern, 24-12

Tony Dallago becomes Illinois' all-time leader in career pins

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Fighting Illini wrestling team ended the conference season on Sunday with a 24-12 win over #9 Northwestern. The #15 Illini notched their third conference win of the season and have now won back-to-back duals for the first time since December. The Illini got wins from Zac Brunson (157), Nikko Reyes (184), Jesse Delgado (125), Zane Richards (133) and Steven Rodrigues (141), while Tony Dallago (174) recorded his 38th career pin to become Illinois' all-time leader in the category.

"We had energy," said head coach Jim Heffernan. "I thought we wrestled hard and we wrestled better tonight. We were aggressive and we wrestled to score points. We had a little more purpose today and that's a good thing. There's a couple of situations where we need to do more. We still have a month to go and we'll keep getting better."

The dual started at 149, where John Fahy filled in for the injured #17 Caleb Ervin to take on #4 Jason Tsirtsis. Tsirtsis scored first with a takedown and acquired just under a minute of riding time before Fahy was able to escape. Tsirtsis notched another takedown with under 10 seconds left in the period to go up 4-1 going into the second. Fahy scored the only points of the second period, escaping from the bottom position halfway through the period, but Tsirtsis recorded an escape and a takedown in the third to claim the 7-2 victory.

At 157, #15 Zac Brunson faced Northwestern's Ben Sullivan. Brunson dominated the first period, recording two takedowns and two near-falls to take an early 9-1 lead. Brunson then started the second period on top and rode Sullivan for nearly a minute and a half before he was able to escape, making the score 9-2 after two periods. Sullivan started the third period with a takedown, but Brunson was able to quickly escape and hang on to win the 11-4 decision.

#10 Jackson Morse squared off against #7 Pierce Harger in the 165-pound matchup. Harger scored first, recording a takedown under a minute into the match, then notched three near-fall points before Morse was able to escape. Morse started the second in the bottom position and managed a quick escape, then recorded a takedown to pull within one point. However, Harger was awarded one point for a locked hands call before the period ended to make the score 6-4 going into the third. Harger scored three points in the third period, an escape and a touchdown, and with the one-point riding time advantage won the 9-4 decision to give Northwestern a 6-3 lead.

Senior Tony Dallago wrestled at Huff Hall for the last time in his career, this time against the Wildcats' David Helmer. Dallago scored a couple of takedowns before turning Helmer and recording his 38th career pin, the most in program history. The Harrisburg, Pa. native is now Illinois' all-time leader in the category. His victory added six points to the team's overall score, giving the Illini a 12-6 lead.

"It's a great way to go out.," said Dallago. "I was trying to be aggressive and I felt good. I get excited when I get pins, so if it's there I try to go for it. It's also six points for the team which is nice."

"Tony breaking the pins record was awesome, especially the way it happened," said Heffernan. "He did it at home on Senior Day. I love watching him wrestle. He's exciting and he's fearless."

Nikko Reyes took on Jacob Berkowitz at 184 pounds, and scored the only points of the opening period with a takedown in the last 20 seconds. He then started the second period in the bottom position and managed a quick escape to make the score 3-0. Berkowitz escaped from the bottom position early in the third, but Reyes responded with a takedown. Berkowitz recorded one more escape, but Reyes held on to claim the 5-2 victory.

Northwestern got victories in the next two matchups, starting with the 197-bout between Jeff Koepke and #15 Alex Polizzi. Each wrestler scored a takedown and an escape in the first period, making the score 3-3 after one. Polizzi started the second period on bottom and was able to quickly escape before taking down Koepke. Koepke then turned Polizzi for a two-point reversal with under 10 seconds left in the second, making the score 6-5 going into he final period. Koepke started the third period on bottom and was able to escape after a minute and a half, but Polizzi held on and was awarded one point for riding time to claim the 7-6 victory. At heavyweight, top-ranked Mike McMullan defeated Christopher Lopez in a 4-0 decision to tie the score at 12-12.

At 125, #1 Jesse Delgado got off to a strong start against Garrison White, recording four takedowns, two three-point near-falls and a two-point near-fall to take an early 17-4 lead. "Delgado is starting to look like himself again," said Heffernan. He's making progress and he's changed some things, he's scoring some different ways. When Jesse is moving like that, you can hardly watch him because he's so fast. He's getting to the point where he's back on."

#9 Zane Richards faced Dominick Malone in the 133 bout. Richards scored a takedown in the first few seconds, then rode out Malone for the remainder of the period. He started the second period in the bottom position and escaped within seconds, then recorded a takedown a minute later. Richards recorded two more takedowns before the period ended, making the score 9-2 going into the third. In the final period, Richards scored two more takedowns and acquired 2:54 in total riding time, giving him the 14-5 major decision victory.

After returning to the lineup on Friday night at Purdue, #9 Steven Rodrigues took on Pat Greco in the final matchup of the night. Greco scored first with a takedown, but Rodrigues escaped less than a minute later to make the score 2-1. Rodrigues started the second period on top and rode Greco for over a minute and a half before turning him for a two-point near-fall to take the 3-2 lead. The redshirt-sophomore recorded an escape and a takedown in the final period to claim the 7-2 victory and make the final score 24-12 in favor of the Illini.

Seniors lead #3 Iowa past #11 Michigan, 26-6

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Seniors Derek St. John exited Mediacom Mat as winners for the final time Sunday afternoon, leading No. 3 Iowa to a 26-6 win over No. 11 Michigan inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

St. John, ranked No. 2 at 157, scored a takedown in the final period to defeat No. 14 Brian Murphy, 3-1, and Ramos scored takedowns in each period to defeat No. 19 Rossi Bruno, 6-1.

St. John finished his career with a 31-1 mark inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and Ramos had his hand raised for the 34th time in 34 career matches on his home turf.

Ramos said getting the win today was exciting, but also a bit of a relief.

"It's not something I was trying to think about all week long, but people keep asking about it," said Ramos, who is ranked No. 3 at 133. "To me I was trying not to make it a big thing, but it is a big thing. The last person to (go undefeated at home) four years was Tom (Brands), and three years was (Brent) Metcalf. Those are big shoes to fill and that's a good class of people to be in."

Brands was undefeated at Carver-Hawkeye Arena from 1989-92. He credits Ramos for showing up to win every time and giving the fans something to look forward to.

"There is something special about Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and there is something special about our fans, and there is something special about how they reward their guys," said Brands. "It's their team and they feel a lot of ownership with that. Especially when you're doing the job, and the way Ramos competes, he's been able to do the job."

Eight Hawkeyes got the job done against Wolverines (10-4, 6-2), who entered the dual one-half match ahead of Iowa in the conference standings. Seven Hawkeyes won by decision, Mike Evans won by tech. fall, and the Hawkeyes owned a 17-3 advantage in takedowns.

Evans used three takedowns and eight nearfall points to defeat Collin Zeerip, 16-0, at 174. It was his team-best sixth technical fall of the year, and it was among a string of six consecutive wins for Iowa.

No. 12 Brody Grothus started Iowa's stretch with a 17-14 win against No. 7 Eric Grajales at 149. Grothus trailed 9-5 after one period, but used a reversal and two nearfall to tie the match, 9-9, in the second. After two more nearfall points, an exchange of reversals, and a late takedown, the match was sent to overtime tied, 14-14. In the first tiebreak, Grothus used two back points and an escape to earn his fourth win over a top 10 opponent.

"Coach always says, `score a lot of points,'" said Grothus. "I did a lot of good things, but I also did a lot of bad things. You take away the positive, and I found a way to win... scoring a lot of points. I think that's what makes wrestling exciting."

St. John followed Grothus with a win at 157 to give Iowa a 12-3 lead at intermission.

No. 4 Nathan Burak extended Iowa's lead to 26-3 with a 4-1 win at 197.

The dual opened at 125, where Cory Clark recorded a 4-1 win over No. 19 Conor Youtsey.

Iowa was three points shy of sweeping 10 bouts.

Michigan's No. 13 Steve Dutton used a third period takedown to defeat No. 9 Bobby Telford at 285.

The Hawkeyes improved to 13-2 overall, 6-1 in the conference. With a win Feb. 23 at No. 15 Wisconsin, Iowa has a chance to share the Big Ten regular season title with Minnesota and Penn State.

The Hawkeyes return to the mat Friday, Feb. 14, to face No. 23 Lehigh at 6 p.m. (CT) in Bethlehem, Pa.

STILLWATER, Okla. ? The Oklahoma State wrestling squad finished Big 12 competition with an unblemished 3-0 record, defeating in-state rival and No. 10 Oklahoma, 29-9, in front of more than 5,000 fans. The Pokes are now 8-4 on the season, winning four-straight duals.

OSU redeemed an early-season loss to the Sooners in a non-conference dual in December.

"I like the score, and 29 points in Bedlam tells you that you won a lot of matches and scored some good bonus points," Smith said. "The matchups were a little different than I thought, but it's definitely something that we can move forward with. Getting back on the winning side of Bedlam is always good."

Bonus points came early in Gallagher-Iba Arena as No. 20 Eddie Klimara stuck Sean Williams, who replaced an injured Jarrod Patterson, early in the second period, giving the Cowboys a swing of momentum heading into a top-10 matchup at 133 pounds.

"I've really been working on my technique when I'm on top," Klimara said. "His arms started to get tired, and the move wasn't really a decision I had to make. These past couple matches, I've just been going out there and wrestling instead of over thinking it. That has helped me out a lot."

No. 4 Jon Morrison improved to 5-0 in the series against No. 7 Cody Brewer, earning a 7-3 decision. The Orland Park, Ill., native is 6-1 against ranked opponents on the season.

Anthony Collica, ranked 20th in the nation at 141 pounds, shut out returning All-American Nick Lester, 4-0. It was his second win over Lester this season.

Another top-10 matchup was in order at 149 pounds as No. 10 Josh Kindig faced No. 2 Kendric Maple. Kindig scored the first points in the bout with a second-period escape, but he could not overcome Maple's attacks and was handed a 7-3 loss.

No. 2 Alex Dieringer answered by adding five more points for the Pokes with his 18-2 technical fall over OU's Dryden Dennis, who filled in for Justin DeAngelis. The bout was finished in just under six minutes, with Dieringer collecting a heap of points, including five takedowns and two nearfalls.

At 165 pounds, No. 5 Tyler Caldwell defeated Clark Glass for the second time this season, pulling out a 5-1 win over the Sooner.

Chris Perry, ranked No. 2 in the nation, was denied a much-anticipated rematch against top-ranked Andrew Howe at 174 pounds. He instead faced off against Derek Geiges, who he pinned in 1:51.

At 184 pounds, Jordan Rogers took on Howe. The Cowboy put up a fight but was defeated, 9-2, marking the Pokes second loss of the day.

Nolan Boyd bumped up to 197 pounds, where he went head-to-head with No. 4 Travis Rutt. Boyd earned four escapes, but it was not enough as Rutt walked away with a 9-4 victory. That would be the last win for the crimson and cream.

No. 19 Austin Marsden closed out the dual with a win, scoring five points in the final 10 seconds to defeat Zach Merrill, 8-2.

Oklahoma State returns to action next week, traveling to Clarion, Pa., to take on the Golden Eagles on Saturday before heading to State College, Pa., to face the No. 1 Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday.

ATHENS, OHIO- Old Dominion University won their fifth dual match in a row (fourth MAC) by defeating Ohio University 22-15 Sunday evening.

ODU's Alexander Richardson (149) and Billy Curling (174) both picked up top-10 victories to continue their individual match winning streaks. Richardson has won 10 in a row dating back to January 2nd and Curling has won five matches in a row.

"Billy Curling has now beaten two top-10 opponents in a week," said ODU Head coach Steve Martin. "He beat his first All-American today in No. 9 Cody Walters and defeated then No. 8-ranked Ottinger from CMU last week. Billy wrestles very hard and is believing in himself. Lenny Richardson also beat No. 8-ranked (AWN) Claxton today and looked great. Michael Hayes came through with a pin and looked dominant. Mecate, Warner and Dechow continued to put points on the board. Dechow continues to score key bonus points for the team. Even in our losses at 197 and Heavyweight we competed hard. Tourdot gave an All-American all he wanted and Beazley took the No. 7-ranked wrestler Phil Wellington into overtime. We look forward to scrapping with Missouri on the road next week."

133-pounder Michael Hayes got the Monarchs on the board with a decisive Fall victory at 5:50 over Sebastian Arroyo (Ohio), which tied the dual match at 6-6. Hayes moves his record to 11-10 and 2-2 in the MAC this season.

ODU would not let the team lead go after 141 as No. 5-ranked Chris Mecate delivered an 8-2 decision victory over Ohio's Noah Forrider. ODU led 9-6 heading into 149 pounds. Mecate is now 23-6, has won six of his last seven and is 5-1 in the MAC this year.

No. 18-ranked Alexander Richardson (149) went on to defeat No. 8-ranked (AWN) Tyron Claxton by a 4-3 decision. Richardson's victory over Claxton gave the Bobcat his first MAC loss this season. Richardson is 22-6 and 5-1 in the MAC.

Heading into 157 pounds ODU led 12-6. Monarchs wrestler No. 19-ranked Tristan Warner did not give up a single point as he defeated Spartak Chino by a 3-0 decision. Warner has won his last five in a row. Warner is 5-1 in the MAC.

ODU's Billy Curling delivered a knock out blow as the 174-pounder stunned All-American No. 9-ranked Cody Walters by a 7-2 decision. Curling has won 8 of his last nine matches and is 5-1 in the MAC this season. He has beaten two top-10 opponents in one week.

At 184 pounds, Old Dominion's Jack Dechow defeated Ryan Garringer by a 14-4 major decision and gave the Monarchs the secure team victory as ODU led 22-12. Dechow is 13-3, 4-0 in the MAC and 8-1 since his return to the ODU lineup.

ODU (8-8, 4-2) is now alone at third place in the MAC Standings. ODU travels to Columbia, Missouri to face the No. 9-ranked Missouri Tigers next Sunday at 1 p.m.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa ? UNI wrestling got wins from five Panthers to beat Kent State by criteria, 19-18, in the teams' first meeting.

The Panthers got a strong start from top-ranked Joe Colon (133 pounds) with his ninth tech fall this season. He is third in the nation for most tech falls among Division I wrestlers. However, Kent State went on to win the next three to put the Golden Flashes ahead, 8-11.

It was No. 11 Cooper Moore (165 pounds) who broke KSU's streak with a 5-4 decision over Tyler Buckwalter. Cody Caldwell (174 pounds) followed it up with a 6-1 decision over NCAA qualifier Caleb Marsh.

Ryan Loder (184 pounds) faced No. 13 Sam Wheeler, the only wrestler ranked by InterMat who made the trip for Kent State. Loder secured his top spot in the conference with his decision. Wheeler is ranked second in the MAC.

His win put the Panthers up 14-11. However, a major decision loss for Basil Minto (197 pounds) gave KSU the winning edge, 15-14. A decision loss by Blaize Cabell (heavyweight) left it up to Dylan Peters for the team win.

No. 6 Peters (125 pounds) got the major decision the Panthers needed to tie up the dual, 18-18. The Panthers' perfect season came down to criteria. UNI earned 59 match points compared to KSU's 58.

At 125, #1 Jesse Delgado got off to a strong start against Garrison White, recording four takedowns, two three-point near-falls and a two-point near-fall to take an early 17-4 lead. After scoring a takedown early in the second, Delgado ended the match with a two-point reversal to claim the 21-5 tech. fall victory and give the Illini a 17-12 lead.

Cal Poly to Host Arizona State for Final Dual Meet of Season on Homecoming and Senior Night

-- Cal Poly Wrestling --

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly's last national championship wrestling team will celebrate its 40th anniversary as part of Friday night's homecoming activities for the Mustangs' Pac-12 dual meet with Arizona State in the Mott Athletics Center.

The 1973-74 Mustangs captured Cal Poly's eighth and final NCAA Division II national championship at Cal State Fullerton, with Cliff Hatch and Keith Leland earning national titles, Grant Arnold, Rodger Warner and Bruce Lynn claiming second place, Sythell Thompson earning third, Leon Iannarelli taking fourth and Guy Greene and Steve Gardner finishing fifth.

Cal Poly moved to Division I starting with the 1974-75 season.

Homecoming festivities include a 5:30 p.m. alumni social at President Jeff Armstrong's home, the dual with the Sun Devils at 7 p.m. and another alumni social at 9 p.m. at Luis Wine Bar in San Luis Obispo.

A round of golf and an alumni social Saturday at Avila Beach Golf Resort will conclude homecoming activities.

On the mat Friday night, Cal Poly (3-8) faces an Arizona State team that owns a 7-7 overall record, including a 2-1 mark in Pac-12 duals. The Sun Devils upset Oregon State 17-16 on Sunday after losses to Iowa State 21-12 and Stanford 22-10 the previous weekend.

Cal Poly fell 24-9 to Stanford and 31-10 to South Dakota State in a triangular meet Sunday in the Mott Athletics Center. Senior Britain Longmire was Cal Poly's lone double winner with 3-2 and 8-2 decisions, raising his record for the year to 13-12.

The Mustangs have a pair of injured Kastls, but Dominic Kastl could return to the lineup Friday.

Cal Poly 149-pounder Blake Kastl, ranked No. 31 in the latest NCAA Division I Coaches Poll with an 18-8 record, has not wrestled since Jan. 24 and the redshirt freshman will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

His older brother, junior Dominic Kastl, injured a shoulder in Sunday's dual meet against South Dakota State. He defaulted that match and Cal Poly forfeited the 174-pound match hours later against Stanford, but Kastl is expected to be in Friday's lineup.

Now 15-4 on the year, Kastl had won seven of his last eight matches prior to the injury. He was ranked No. 19 last week and won the Pac-12 title at 165 pounds two years ago.

Cal Poly, seeking to snap a five-match losing streak, likely will send just two nationally ranked wrestlers against Arizona State.

In addition to Dominic Kastl, sophomore Devon Lotito sports a 19-8 record at 133 pounds and is ranked No. 18 in the NCAA poll. He earned an 11-4 decision in the South Dakota State dual and fell 4-3 to No. 10 Ryan Mango of Stanford on Sunday.

Lotito, the defending Pac-12 champion at 133 pounds, placed third in the Reno Tournament of Champions and seventh at the Midlands Championship earlier this season.

In addition to Longmire and Lotito, other Mustangs with winning records include Victor Trujillo (18-10) at 141 pounds, Kyle Chene (13-11) at 149 and Spencer Empey (12-10) at 285. Sean Dougherty is 11-11 at 184 pounds.

Arizona will have only one nationally ranked wrestler -- 184-pounder Blake Stauffer. The sophomore is ranked No. 22 in the NCAA poll with a 16-6 record. Stauffer was 22-5 as a freshman a year ago, finishing second in the Pac-12 finals at 174 pounds.

Other Sun Devils with records above the .500 mark are 125-pounder Ares Carpio (16-11), 141-pounder Matt Kraus (17-11), 157-pounder Joel Smith (15-9) and 174-pounder Ray Waters (11-10).

Arizona State holds a 30-14 advantage in its series against Cal Poly, winning last year's dual meet 38-3 in Tempe. The Mustangs beat the Sun Devils 26-11 two years ago and had won three straight matches against Arizona State before falling last year.

Four Mustang seniors will be honored just prior to the dual meet. They are Longmire, Chene, Dougherty and Brandan Rocha.

Friday's dual concludes the regular season. Cal Poly will compete in the Pac-12 Championship on Sunday, March 2, at Stanford, with the NCAA Division I National Championship scheduled for March 20-22 in Oklahoma City.

Walsh Ramos Pick Up ACC Wins; Duke Falls to UNC

February 11, 2014

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.?Duke University freshman Xaviel Ramos and redshirt sophomore Brendan Walsh captured their first ACC wrestling victories this evening in a 24-12 setback to North Carolina at Carmichael Arena.

Redshirt junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown remained undefeated in conference action, while redshirt sophomore Conner Hartmann joined him in the win column. Duke (6-12, 0-5 ACCC) captured four of the nine matches, but couldn't overcome early bonus points scored by North Carolina (6-10, 1-4).

North Carolina raced out to an 11-0 lead with wins at 165, 174 and 184. Hartmann garnered the Blue Devils' first points of the night with a narrow 3-1 decision over Frank Abbondanza at 197.

After a scoreless first period, Hartmann escaped quickly to start the second for the 1-0 advantage after two periods. Defending against Hartmann's shots throughout the first two periods, Abbondanza tied the bout with an escape early in the third to force Hartmann to get a takedown for the win.

In search of his 17th win of the year, Hartmann scored a takedown on a good shot with only 10 seconds remaining in the bout. The win pushes him to 17-8 on the year and 1-4 in ACC competition.

Redshirt sophomore Brendan Walsh added three more points to Duke's scoring line with his first career ACC victory. Walsh scored an early takedown and never looked back en route to the 11-6 decision over Bob Coe. The win was his fourth of the year and pushed his dual record to 2-1 overall, while the 11 points are the second most he's scored in a bout this season.

A forfeit at 125 stretched North Carolina's lead back to 11 and the Tar Heels added a win at 133 before Xaviel Ramos joined Walsh in getting his first career ACC victory at 141.

Ramos, trailing Brian Bokoski 5-4 after two periods, started the third on bottom and looking for the escape to tie. Bokoski appeared as if he might get the better of the Duke rookie as he nearly got him on his back, but Ramos turned and scored the reversal and nearfall to garner the 9-6 decision.

At 149 pounds, Christian Barber used a first-period takedown to hold off Duke's Connor Bass in the 2-1 decision. Bass, on top in the third, tried to turn Barber, but came up just shy of picking up his second ACC win.

Kerr-Brown, in fitting fashion of saving Duke's unbeaten for last, was in control from the very beginning against Jake Crawford. The Duke captain scored a late takedown in the first and cruised to the 5-1 for his 21st win of the year and 14th dual victory.

Duke is back in action Sunday, Feb. 16 at The Citadel. The non-conference dual is set for 4 p.m.

165 ? John Staudenmayer (UNC) major dec. Marcus Cain (Duke), 14-3; Team Score: UNC 4, Duke 0

Wolverines open trip with 25-12 win over Northern Colorado

UVU won seven of the 10 bouts including four by major decision.

GREELEY, Colo. - The Utah Valley University wrestling team took care of business in its opening dual meet of a three-match road trip on Wednesday evening by defeating Northern Colorado, 25-12, at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.

The Wolverines (6-7, 2-1 WWC) won the Western Wrestling Conference dual by taking seven of the 10 bouts, including four by major decision.

"The guys wrestled hard. I saw some improvements in areas we worked on after last week and I was pleased with how we wrestled through the lineup," UVU head coach Greg Williams said. "Jade also did a great job against a tough kid tonight."

Sophomores Derek Thomas (197) took theirs by decision.

The dual began at 133 pounds and Tolbert, Garner and Willson wasted no time giving Utah Valley an early advantage as the trio of Wolverines won their matches by respective scores of 11-1, 8-3 and 12-1. After a win by UNC's (5-11, 0-3 WWC) Mitchell Polkowske, who is currently ranked 20th at 157 pounds by TheOpenMat.com, Cook and Schmalhaus bounced right back for UVU with back-to-back wins via major decision to give the Wolverines a 19-3 lead after six bouts.

The 165-pound senior Cook jumped out to a 7-0 advantage over Northern Colorado's Charlie McMartin in the first period thanks to a takedown and two sets of nearfall points. Cook secured the major by picking up another takedown as well as an escape and an additional riding time point to take the bout by a score of 11-3. The fellow senior Schmalhaus dominated the next match over Josh Van Tine as he managed to shutout the Bear, 8-0, with three takedowns, an escape and a riding time point.

Following a loss by freshman Adam Fager.

After a fall by Northern Colorado's Henry Chirino over freshman Richard Larsen at heavyweight, Rauser capped the dual for the Wolverines with an impressive 8-2 victory over the 19-6 Trey Andrews. The UVU 125-pounder and 2013 NCAA qualifier, jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead over Andrews with an opening period takedown and two-point nearfall. Andrews countered at the end of the frame with a reversal but that was the lone points that Rauser would allow the Bear redshirt freshman to score the rest of the match. Following a scoreless second period, Rauser clinched the bout with more back points in the final period (three-point nearfall) as well as a riding time point.

The win marked Utah Valley's second straight over the Bears as the Wolverines recorded their first-ever shutout against a Division I opponent versus UNC last year in Orem (39-0).

The Wolverines will continue their WWC road trip through the Front Range at Air Force on Friday night. UVU will then head to Laramie, Wyo., the following night for its regular season finale on Saturday. Both conference duals will begin at 7 p.m.

"SDSU holds position well and they have a strong dual lineup," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "We will work hard to hand fight, clear ties and get to our attacks."

The Huskies comes into the dual with a 6-10 record overall, as they compete in their final non-conference dual of the season. Last weekend, NIU dropped a 19-18 decision by criteria on Senior Day against Kent State. Seniors Rob Jillard and Jared Torrence each claimed wins, along with Andrew Morse and Shawn Scott.

SDSU enters Friday with a 4-7 record as they celebrate Senior Night against the Huskies. The Jackrabbits went 1-2 last weekend, losing at Utah Valley on Thursday, 18-15, before topping Cal Poly, 31-10, and falling to Stanford, 20-14, Sunday afternoon in California.

Scouting South Dakota State[/B]

South Dakota State comes into Friday night's dual with a 4-7 record overall and a 2-1 mark in the Western Wrestling Conference. So far, the Jackrabbits victories this season have come against Augustana (S.D.), Wyoming, Air Force and Cal Poly. However, they are 0-2 this season against MAC foes, having lost to Ohio and Northern Iowa on Feb. 1 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. SDSU features one nationally-ranked wrestler in their lineup, as #17 Cody Pack holds a 23-6 record on the season at 157 pounds. NIU leads the series with SDSU, 2-1, since 1969 after taking a 26-12 victory last season in DeKalb.

That Was Fast[/B]

Senior Rob Jillard made quite an impressive statement Saturday afternoon against Kent State. Going head-to-head with Mike DePalma, the Franklinville, N.J., native pinned the Golden Flashes' 149-pounder in just 46 seconds, making it the fastest pin of the season thus far for the Huskies. In addition, the pin was also Jillard's fastest in his three years at NIU and the second-fastest of his collegiate career. His fastest pin came in his lone season at Liberty in 2010-11, when he pinned Brown's Vincent Moita in 45 seconds at the Keystone Classic.

A First for Everything[/B]

Saturday's dual against Kent State ended in rather peculiar fashion, as Jared Torrence's 1-0 decision at heavyweight against Mimmo Lytle tied the dual at 18-18. However, it was the Golden Flashes who earned the dual win, as they had won six of the 10 matches in the dual. The finish marked the first time that the Huskies encountered a match that ended in criteria since the NCAA re-implemented the tiebreaker rule prior to the 2011-12 season.

Deja Vu in the Dakotas[/B]

If Brookings, S.D., sounds like a familiar location for Huskie wrestling fans, it should be. This weekend marks the second trip that NIU makes to South Dakota State, as they also competed at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open to open the season Nov. 3. Prior to that, the Huskies' last trip to South Dakota OR North Dakota was Dec. 13, 2009, when they competed at the North Dakota State Duals.

Up Next...[/B]

The Huskies close their regular season Sunday, Feb. 23, when they head to Buffalo to clash with the Bulls. The dual begins at noon CT inside UB's Alumni Arena.

LAST TIME OUT

Trailing 16-9 with two bouts remaining, sophomore Augustus Marker (Castle Rock, Colo.) unleashed a crucial defensive fall at 197 to power Brown to an 18-16 win over Penn in its home opener at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday. The Bears needed strong performances in the final two bouts and Marker provided just that with a defensive fall with just 50 seconds left in the 197-pound match. The clutch maneuver cut Penn's lead to one, 16-15, allowing freshman heavyweight Ryder Cavey (Eldersburg, Md.) to seal the team win with a 7-2 score in the day's final bout.
On Sunday, junior Anthony Finocchiaro (Canastota, N.Y.) added a fall in 2:17 as Brown narrowly fell to Princeton, 21-16, and toppled Johnson & Wales, 33-15, to wrap up Alumni Weekend. Junior Ricky McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) and Cavey each went unbeaten at 174 and 285, respectively, to help the Bears finish the weekend with a 2-1 record.

BERNSTEIN RANKED NO. 11 AT 184

Bernstein ranks 11th in the country in the 184-pound weight class according to the latest Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine poll. Brown's winningest wrestler this season, Bernstein stands among the nation's elite in a handful of major polls, including InterMat (12th), Amateur Wrestling News (12th) and FloWrestling (13th).
Bernstein slipped two spots from ninth in last week's WIN poll after a narrow 8-5 loss to No. 9 Lorenzo Thomas of Penn on Saturday, but quickly bounced back with a pair of major decisions against Princeton and Johnson & Wales on Sunday. The winner of 11 of his last 13 decisions, Bernstein leads the Bears with a 25-7 record, 10 falls and nine major decisions.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION

Ivy League rival Harvard arrives on College Hill for the noon meet on Saturday, bringing a 3-6 overall record and 2-6 mark in EIWA competition. The Crimson comes off a weekend sweep by Ancient Eight opponents Penn (23-15) and Princeton (19-17), but the Bears will look to avenge a 21-11 setback to Harvard in 2013.
Sophomore Todd Preston leads the Crimson with a 16-8 record at 141 and has won three straight contests. An expert of the low scoring affair, Preston has paved his way to the top of his team's standings with just two pins and no major decisions. Freshman Eric Morris stands at 15-10 in the 174-pound weight class and boasts a 7-1 record in major decisions. Morris is heating up as of late, outscoring his opponents 18-0 in his last two victories.

The Terriers of Boston University are 3-9 overall and surely remember last year's 19-19 tiebreaker that went in favor of the Bears. Three straight setbacks have seen BU slip to 1-8 in EIWA contention and 0-3 on the road, but senior 157-pounder Nestor Taffur aims to change the Terriers' fortune with his 29-2 record and 12-0 showing in dual meets. Taffur's only losses came at the hands of worthy opponents in Ray Bethea of Penn and No. 5 Dylan Ness of Minnesota.
