Wildcats Wrap Up Action in Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? Davidson's Scott Patrick and Kevin Birmingham both dropped their consolation bouts, wrapping up competition at the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Chesapeake Energy Arena Thursday evening.

Struggling to gain momentum, Birmingham couldn't overcome West Virginia's Mike Morales, dropping an 8-2 contest to wrap up competition in the pigtail consolations. Patrick also suffered at setback, taking an 8-1 loss at the hands of ninth-seeded Domnic Abounader of Michigan a second-round consolation bout.

Birmingham, who previously lost a 9-6 decision to Morales in Morgantown earlier this season, fought tough battle to put points on the board. Morales scored a takedown just over a minute into the match, holding on for riding time through the end of the first period. Starting in the defensive position, Birmingham picked up a point with an escape midway through the second. However, Morales took him down with 10 seconds remaining in the second to lead 4-1.

With Morales on the bottom to start the final period, Birmingham held on to cut into the riding time before the Mountaineer escaped midway through the period. The two battled for position, as Morales scored on another takedown with 30 seconds remaining. Birmingham escaped, fighting to gain control of the bout. In the end he ran out of time, as Morales picked up a point for riding time to take the match by an 8-2 decision.

Abounader took down Patrick 51 seconds into the bout, and did not surrender a point for the first or second periods. He scored on an escape and another takedown in the middle stanza to lead 5-0 entering the third. The duo battled in the third period before Abounader gained the advantage with a takedown at the midpoint. Patrick scored on an escape in the last 15 seconds, but couldn't add any more points as Abounader adding another for riding time in earning the 8-1 decision.

The 2014 season marked the first time in 40 years that the Wildcats sent multiple competitors to the NCAA Wrestling Championships. It is believed to be the first time in program history Davidson has qualified more than one participant.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Utah Valley University heavyweight Adam Fager advanced to day number two of the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships with a hard fought 8-6 decision over Lehigh's Max Wessell on Thursday night in Oklahoma City, Okla.
After suffering a first round loss to Rutgers' Billy Smith (27-6) during Thursday morning's opening session, the junior Fager (19-8) responded by picking up the 8-6 win over Wessell (10-6) in the wrestlebacks during session number two.
"This is what I've been waiting for. I haven't felt like myself since I've been back from my injury until tonight," said the UVU heavyweight Fager. "I haven't been wrestling the way that I know I am capable of. But I managed to dig deep and compete like I knew that I could here tonight."
The 15th-seeded Fager opened the bout against Wessell with two first-period takedowns to jump out to a 4-1 advantage. With a couple of escapes in the second frame, Fager held a 6-4 lead after two despite giving up a takedown. Fager then secured the victory in the final period with a late takedown of his own to hold on to defeat Wessell, 8-6, and live another day at his second trip to nationals.
Fager, who is 1-1 so far at the tournament, will face off against No. 16 Amarveer Dhesi of Oregon State (27-8) on Friday morning.
"I'm just going to take each match seven minutes at a time from here on out, and wrestle the way that I know that I am capable of," concluded Fager.
All three other Utah Valley grapplers that were in action at the national tournament, sophomore 125-pounder Curtis Abner Cook (165), were eliminated during Thursday's evening session after they all suffered their second consecutive defeats on the day.
After getting pinned in the closing seconds by the top seed and defending national champion Jesse Delgado (27-2) earlier in the day, Rauser (10-5) took on Bucknell's Paul Petrov (31-8) in a win-or-go-home contest. The Wolverine sophomore took command of the bout early as he picked up a quick takedown and a three-point nearfall after nearly pinning Petrov in the opening period. With Rauser leading 5-1 in the second, Petrov picked up a takedown to cut the score to 5-3. After a quick escape by Rauser to start the third period, Petrov took over the bout as he scored three takedowns and a late nearfall to win the match by a score of 12-8.
With the loss, Rauser finished his second trip to nationals with an 0-2 record.
Garner, who dropped his earlier match in the day to No. 15 Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State (30-7), faced a must-win bout against Missouri's Lavion Mayes in session number two. Mayes took the upper hand in the early stages with a pair of first-period takedowns to take a 4-1 lead into the second frame. Garner made it 4-2 with an escape, but Mayes followed with another takedown to take a 6-2 advantage. Despite picking up another escape point as well as a takedown in the third period, Garner dropped the bout by major decision, 15-5, after Mayes scored three final takedowns along with an escape and a riding time point in the third.
The 2014 Western Wresting Conference champion Garner finishes his first trip to the Big Show with an 0-2 showing and his senior campaign with a 14-10 record. Garner led the Wolverines in 2013-14 in duals with an 11-4 clip.
Cook, who lost by fall to the two-seed and three-time All-American Tyler Caldwell of Oklahoma State (26-3) during the opening session, fell behind 8-0 to Gardner-Webb's Austin Trott after giving up a takedown and two sets of nearfalls to Trott (29-8) in the first period. Cook then had a strong second period that included a takedown of his own but Trott responded in the final stanza with another nearfall and an additional point from riding time to win the match by major decision (12-4).
The senior Cook went 0-2 at his first trip at the NCAA Championships and finished his senior year with a 7-9 overall record.
In the team score race, the three-time defending national champions Penn State lead the way with 26.5 points. Minnesota and Oklahoma State are next as they are tied for second with 21.5 points and Iowa and Oklahoma are tied for fourth with 20.5. Utah Valley is currently in a tie for 63rd place with a half a point.

Two Grapplers Alive After First Day of NCAA Championships
Billy Smith, Anthony Perrotti advance to consolation second round

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? (March 20, 2014) ? After the first day of the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships, two Scarlet Knight grapplers are alive in their consolation brackets and will continue their quests Friday at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Redshirt sophomores Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) and Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) split their first two matches of the tournament at heavyweight and 157 pounds ,respectively, to move on to Session III. Sophomore 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) and 133-pounder Vinnie Dellevfave (Toms River, N.J.) were eliminated from contention after the first day.

Session III begins tomorrow at noon EST with the championship quarterfinals on the inside four mats and the second and third consolation rounds on the outside four mats. With three wins tomorrow, Smith and Perrotti will earn advance to the consolation quarterfinals and earn All-American status.

Session II

Perrotti was the final Rutgers wrestler to compete on Day One, coming from behind in the third period to pull out a 13-8 win against Brandon Zeerip (Eastern Michigan). Perrotti entered the final stanza down, 8-6, immediately registering an escape to cut the deficit to 8-7. He went ahead for good at the 40-second mark, finishing a takedown before two back points for an 11-8 lead. Two more near fall points as time expired sealed the 13-8 decision and set Perrotti up with No. 8 Roger Pena (Oregon State) tomorrow in the consolation second round.

Smith drew the No. 2 seed Nick Gwiazdowski (NC State) in his second bout, losing 6-3. Smith trailed by just a point, 4-3, entering the final period before a Gwiazdowski escape and Smith stall in the third iced the match. Smith will continue his run in the consolation bracket tomorrow against Bucknell's Joe Stolfi.

The matchup is a rematch of the 2014 EIWA Heavyweight Championship, where Stolfi topped Smith in a hard-fought match, 9-7 (March 9).

Robert Jillard (Northern Illinois) ended Theobold's tournament with a 9-2 win in the consolation first round. Theobold responded down 8-0 with a reversal to start the third period, but Jillard's lead was two steep, resulting in the Theobold loss.

Dellefave had his NCAA Championships run ended in the pigtail consolation round, where Devon Lotito (Cal Poly) jumped on the Toms River East HS product early en route to a 6-1 win. Lotito scored a takedown in the first minute and registered two back points to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Dellefave escaped shortly after, but Lotito kept the pressure on the rest of the way, giving Dellefave the loss and ending his tournament.

Session I

Smith defeated No. 15 Adam Fager (Utah Valley) by a 6-2 decision to advance to the championship second round. Smith recorded the first takedown of the match at the 1:16 mark of the opening period, went over a minute of riding time in the second and never looked back. A takedown with 15 second to go sealed the 6-2 win with 1:59 of riding time.

Dellefave dropped a 9-1 major decision in his first match of the tournament, falling to No. 1 Joe Colon (Northern Iowa) for the second time this season. Colon scored a takedown at the 1:22 mark of the first period and never let up, accumulating 3:03 of riding time en route to the win.

Theobold was edged, 9-4, in his opening bout against No. 10 Zach Neibert (Virginia Tech). A reversal by Theobold to end the first period kept the match tight, cutting Neibert's lead to 4-3. But a Neibert reversal and two back points to open the second period put Theobold in a hole he could not recover from, as a mid-period escape was all Neibert allowed the rest of the way.

Perrotti suffered a tough defeat in his first round matchup, losing a highly competitive 7-6 match against No. 10 Blaise Butler (Virginia). Perrotti started the scoring with a takedown two minutes in and held a 2-1 lead after the first period.

After starting down to begin the second period, Butler quickly escaped and took down Perrotti for a 4-2 edge. Perroti immediately responded with a reversal to tie things at 4-4.

With the match tied a 5-5 following a Perrotti escape in the third period, Butler scored the match-winning takedown with 54 seconds remaining. Perrotti escaped with 17 seconds left, but Butler held off Perrotti's attacks to win, 7-6.

Smith, Jillard Advance to Day Two of NCAA Championships
Huskies bounce back with wins in consolation bracket

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? The Northern Illinois University wrestling team bounced back from a rough start Thursday in Oklahoma City, Okla., as Nick Smith (Ida, Mich./Ida) and Rob Jillard (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) each scored decisive wins in the consolation bracket.

Smith stay alive in the tournament with a second-period pin of Maryland's Tyler Goodwin, while Jillard earned a 9-2 decision over Rutgers' Ken Theobold.

"(The wins) were very important," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "It showed character and the desire to dig deep into this tournament. It's tough coming off a championship round loss and, to gather themselves up and compete as hard as they did, it showed a lot of courage and character."

Smith came out firing against Goodwin, scoring a takedown a minute into the match. From there, the Huskie blew open the match with three nearfall points to end the first period with a 5-1 lead. Smith kept the pressure on his opponent with a reversal to open the second period, then broke double-digits with three more nearfall points. After coming close to sticking Goodwin multiple times earlier in the match, Smith finally pinned the Terrapin to stay alive in the tournament.

Moments later, Jillard scored a resounding win against Theobold. After getting a quick takedown, the Franklinville, N.J., native scored two nearfall points to push his lead to 4-0 lead after one. Jillard repeated that in the second period, as another takedown and two-point nearfall combo put the Huskie ahead, 8-0. Despite surrendering a reversal early in the third period, Jillard hung on for the win.

The action continues tomorrow in Oklahoma City beginning at 10 a.m. Nick Smith's day begins with a matchup against 10th-seeded Nick Soto of Chattanooga. For Jillard, he will face #8 Dave Habat of Edinboro in a rematch from this year's Midlands Championships.

"There's not a match in the championship side of the bracket or the consolation side of the bracket where you're not going to run into a stud," Ludwig said concerning tomorrow's bouts. "Tomorrow's matches are extremely challenging, as well.

"They're the only ones in front of us now and that's all that matters."

Session I Recap

Smith and Jillard opened the tournament with losses, as Smith dropped a 6-3 decision to #8 David Thorn of Minnesota and Jillard fell in a 7-4 loss to #7 Gus Sako of Virginia.

Smith matched Thorn's intensity to start the match by nearly landing a takedown against his nationally-ranked opponent within the first 20 seconds, then thwarting the Golden Gopher's takedown attempt to end the first period scoreless. However, Thorn got on the board with an escape followed by a takedown. The Huskie senior countered with a pair of escapes to get within 3-2 early in the third, but a takedown and the riding time bonus allowed Thorn to escape.

Meanwhile, Jillard fell into an early hole against Sako, as the Cavalier scored four points on a pair of takedowns to put the Huskie 149-pounder in a 4-2 hole after one period. The NIU senior, though, got to within one by scoring on an escape to end the second period, but another Sako takedown early in the third period all but sealed Jillard's fate in the opening round.

Despite not getting on the board until the third period, Miller never trailed in his win over Alton in the evening session. Scoreless after a period, Miller rode out Alton for the entire second, returning him to the mat on three different stand-up attempts. Miller quickly earned an escape to start the third and later spun behind Alton for what turned out to be a crucial takedown.

"Ian wrestled smart throughout the match," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "You got to have patience against a guy like that (Alton). You have to stay in good positions and not make any mistakes which he didn't. By the third period Alton was forced to come at Ian and that's when Ian is at his best."

In the first session Miller used an inside trip to score the opening takedown, but trailed 3-2 after the first period when a single leg shot attempt was countered by Greisheimer. Miller escaped from the bottom in the second and converted a duck-under to take a 5-3 lead. A Greisheimer escape in the third cut into Miller's lead, but another Miller takedown following a Greisheimer shot secured the victory.

Friday, Miller will take on the No. 5 seed, Isaac Jordan of Wisconsin. The winner earns a spot in Friday night's semifinals.

Sophomore Michael DePalma went 1-1 Thursday with a 9-5 comeback victory over Lock Haven's Macauley Maldarelli. DePalma trailed 5-3 after the first period, but a quick escape and single leg takedown gave him a 6-5 lead. DePalma then built up over a minute of riding time to close out the second. Maldarelli chose neutral to start the third and DePalma capitalized with a takedown on an ankle pick.

In his first match, DePalma jumped out to 2-0 lead over No. 9 seed Eric Grajales, but was pinned in the second period.

Sophomore Mack McGuire dropped a pair of close matches. McGuire fell to Missouri's Matt Manley 7-5 in a second sudden victory period. McGuire scored a takedown in the second period of regulation and led 4-2 early in the third, but a Manley takedown and riding time forced OT with the score knotted 5-5.

McGuire then fell 9-5 to Cal Poly's Devon Lotito. McGuire led 4-3 late in the second period, before Lotito converted two takedowns in the third.

Junior Caleb Marsh also dropped a pair of close matches. Marsh opened his day with a 5-2 loss to No. 6 seed Logan Storley of Minnesota. A reversal by Marsh midway through the second period tied the match 2-2, but Storley countered with a reversal of his own.

Virginia Tech's Austin Gabel then edged Marsh 3-1 in sudden victory of the consolation bracket. Gabel dove at Marsh's legs for a match-ending double-leg takedown.

Friday's action at Chesapeake Energy Arena begins at 11 a.m. Eastern. DePalma will start the Flashes' day, taking on Virginia's Gus Sako.

Kindig, Marsden Tally Huge Upsets in Session Two

**Quotes attached

OKLAHOMA CITY ? Cowboys Josh Kindig and Austin Marsden helped keep the Cowboys tied for second place with Kindig upsetting No. 6 seed Jake Sueflohn of Nebraska and Marsden knocking off 2013 NCAA finalist Mike McMullan.

"Overall we had a round that we had to get tough in after losing a couple early," coach John Smith said. "We reeled off five straight in the championship. That's something you like to see. We'll just have to come back tomorrow. We'll have eight guys. It's a tough tournament, but overall not a bad day for us."

After the Pokes went 0-4 to start session two, Kindig went head-to-head with Sueflohn at 149 pounds. Kindig picked up two takedowns in the first period and held onto the lead, earning an escape in the second period and another takedown in the third to take the 7-5 victory.

"I just went out like every other match and wanted to put points on the board. It came down to a close one," Kindig said. "The kid's a goer. I'm a goer too, though. I came in seeded lower than him, but I don't call it an upset. That's the wrong word. More like, 'surprise' is probably better. I'm on the same level. Seeds don't matter. Coach has been telling us that from the beginning of the tournament. I just went out there and did what I usually do."

Shortly after Kindig's match, Alex Dieringer pinned Mizzou's Joey LaVallee in 1:38, giving him his second bonus-point victory of the day.

Tyler Caldwell and Chris Perry followed with almost simultaneous wins. Perry picked up more bonus points for the Pokes with an 11-3 major decision over Tony Dallago of Illinois, while Caldwell earned a 9-2 decision over 15th-seed Danny Zilverberg of Minnesota.
To wrap up the second round in the championship bracket, the Cowboys made a point with heavyweight and sophomore Marsden taking out No. 6 seed McMullan of Northwestern, 3-2.

Marsden scored a takedown with one second left in the second period to grab a 2-1 lead heading into the final two minutes. McMullan racked up more than a minute of riding time, but Marsden's escape with 46 seconds left that kept the match out of reach for the Wildcat.

"Coach (Smith) just told me to have a positive mindset, switch up my style and try to be more offensive; attacking more," Marsden said. "He just kept repeating that to me and that's why I did it. I got to control the pace, create the action, and once you do that you get on top."

Eight OSU wrestlers are still alive in the tourney, with the Cowboys sending five to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket, which takes place in Friday's morning session beginning at 10 a.m. in Chesapeake Energy Arena.

IOWA WRESTLING
6 Hawkeyes advance to quarterfinal round

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Six University of Iowa wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 NCAA Championships following second round action Thursday at Chesapeake Energy Arena. Iowa is one of two schools with six wrestlers still competing in the championship bracket. Minnesota is the other.

The Hawkeyes have four wrestlers still competing in wrestle-backs and are tied for fourth place in the team race with 20.5 points. Penn State is in first place with 26.5 points. Minnesota and Oklahoma State are tied for second with 21.5 points. Iowa is tied with Oklahoma.

Nathan Burak's 4-3 win in the closing seconds highlighted a championship round that saw Iowa win six-of-seven matches. Burak, the No. 11 at 197, trailed sixth-seeded Richard Perry of Bloomsburg, 3-2, before exploding for a double-leg and putting two points on the board just before time expired.

"I knew there was 12 seconds left when we came back to the middle," said Burak, who will face No. 14 Chris Penny of Virginia Tech in the 197-pound quarterfinals. "I went for a double, got in pretty deep and just tried to finish right away. I made sure my toe was in, heard everyone yell two, and saw the ref gave me two. It felt good."

Senior Derek St. John advanced to the 157-pound quarterfinals for the fourth straight year. The defending national champion widened the gap after a 2-0 first period, recording seven takedowns in the final four minutes and totaling 3:45 of riding time en route to a 18-5 major decision over The Citadel's Aaron Walker. St. John will face Cornell's Brian Realbuto in the quarters. It will be the first career meeting between the two.

Tony Ramos used overtime to punch his third career ticket to the quarterfinals. Ramos, the No. 3 seed at 133, locked up a cradle in sudden victory to earn a 6-4 win over Illinois' 14th-seeded Zain Richards. Ramos will face Lehigh's sixth-seeded Mason Beckman in the quarters. Ramos defeated Beckman, 3-1, in a dual earlier this season.

Cory Clark erased a 2-0 deficit for the second time in the tournament, moving onto the quarters with an 8-5 win over Wyoming's ninth-seeded Tyler Cox. Clark will face defending 125-pound champion Jesse Delgado (Illinois) in the quarters. Delgado defeated Clark, 4-3, two weeks ago at the Big Ten tournament.

Mike Evans will get a rematch of the Big Ten semifinals when he faces Penn State's Matt Brown in the quarters. Evans used takedowns in the firsts and second period to build a 5-0 lead and eventually top Bloomsburg's Mike Dessino, 7-3. Evans, the No. 4 seed, and Brown, the No. 5 seed, have split four career meetings.

Bobby Telford used a third-period takedown and 2:39 of riding time to defeat Maryland's Spencer Myers, 3-0, and advance to the quarterfinals for the second time in his career. Telford, the No. 5 seed, will face Michigan's fourth-seeded Adam Coon in the quarters. Coon won the previous two meetings this season.

Iowa scored bonus points in each of its three consolation matches. Josh Dziewa earned a 24-7 tech. fall over Buffalo's Nick Flannery, and Nick Moore and Ethen Lofthouse each advanced with major decisions.

"We have to keep that going and that's the key," said UI head coach Tom Brands. "It's about one match at a time to get as high on the stand as you can. We'll take those battles one at a time. We have a lot of work to do on both sides of the bracket."

Brody Grothus suffered Iowa's lone defeat of the second session. Grothus lost 13-5 to defending champion Kendric Maple (Oklahoma) and will compete tomorrow in the consolation bracket.

Action resumes Friday at 10 a.m. (CT). Session III will be televised on ESPNU and streamed online at ESPN3.

Falcons Wrap Up Opening Day at NCAA Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? Four Air Force wrestlers wrapped up the opening day of competition at the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, being held at Chesapeake Energy Arena. Leading the way for the Falcons were Josh Martinez (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Devin Hightower (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), who each posted 1-1 records on Thursday and will continue competition in the consolation bracket.

Also competing for the Falcons on day one were seniors Greg Rinker (Northampton, Pa.) and Josh Kreimier (Fort Collins, Colo.), who both dropped a pair of matches.

Martinez, seeded fourth at 125 pounds, began the day with a victory, defeating North Carolina's Nathan Kraisser, 8-4. After taking a 2-1 lead at the end of one period, Martinez scored a takedown and a two-point near fall in the second period, increasing his advantage to 6-2. He held a 7-2 lead in the third period before Kraisser scored a takedown in the final seconds of the bout, and closed out the match with an escape to take the win.

Meanwhile, in his second match of the day, Martinez faced off against Iowa State's Earl Hall. Unfortunately, Martinez was unable to avenge an earlier loss to Hall, dropping an 8-1 decision. Martinez now moves into the consolation bracket, where he will face Lehigh's Darian Cruz.

Hightower, competing at 184 pounds, also picked up a victory in his first match of the day, scoring a 5-1 decision over 16th-seeded Nick Vetterlein of Virginia Tech. Hightower scored a late first-period takedown against Vetterlein and extended his lead to 3-0 with an escape in the second period. Hightower's advantage increased to 5-0 with a two-point near fall in the third period, before Vetterlein scored an escape for his only point of the match.

In his second bout, Hightower faced a formidable opponent, taking on top-seeded and undefeated Jimmy Sheptock of Maryland. Despite a hard-fought battle, Hightower was unable to get past Sheptock, dropping a 4-0 decision. Next up for Hightower is a match-up with Northern Iowa's Ryan Loder, the 15th seed, in the consolation bracket.

Rinker, competing at the NCAA Championships for the first time, started out with a tough match against sixth-seed Mason Beckman of Lehigh at 133 pounds, giving up a technical fall. He then closed out the tournament with a 10-4 loss to Rider's Chuck Zeisloft.

Meanwhile, Kreimier, in his third NCAA appearance, also had a pair of challenging bouts at 157 pounds, starting with a match-up against Nebraska's James Green. After dropping a major decision to the top-seed wrestler, Kreimier moved into the consolation bracket for a close bout against North Carolina State's Thomas Gantt. After going scoreless in the first two periods, Kreimier was first to get on the scoreboard, earning an escape, before Gantt took the lead with a takedown. Kreimier was able to score the escape to tie the match at 2-2, but Gantt registered a takedown and two-point near fall in the final seconds to pick up the 6-2 decision.

CHALFANT ADVANCES TO NCAA QUARTERFINALS
*complete brackets & team scores are attached…

OKLAHOMA CITY - Three Hoosiers remain in contention after Day One of the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships, including heavyweight Adam Chalfant's advancement into the championship quarterfinals.

Chalfant enters Friday just one win shy of guaranteeing All-America status and three victories away from a national title. Meanwhile, Taylor Walsh and Ryan LeBlanc both split matches on Thursday and are still in the running for third place. Each needs a trio of triumphs to clinch their spot on the All-America stand.

Indiana is in 23rd place of the team standings after Day One.

Bloomsburg's Justin Grant was no match for Chalfant in the first round as IU's quarterfinalist accumulated five takedowns, an escape and 1:23 worth of riding time advantage for a 12-4 major decision. It marked Chalfant's fifth major this season and 19th of his Hoosier career.

He battled Penn State's Jonathan Gingrich in the second round. They had split two previous meetings, but Chalfant took the rubber match by a final tally of 5-2. The big fella nailed an early takedown and never looked back. He improves to 27-3 in his senior year and faces Austin Marsden of Oklahoma State in the quarters.

Marsden, the #11-seed, upset sixth-seeded Mike McMullan (Northwestern) to set up the showdown with third-seeded Chalfant. The two heavyweights have met once before as Marsden ended Chalfant's first season as a Hoosier at the 2012 NCAA Championships with a 6-4 win in the second sudden victory period.

Walsh's day was a roller coaster ride of many ups and downs. It began falling behind 2-0 to Chattanooga's Alex Hudson in the first round. Hudson then got in deep on another shot, but Walsh fended off the attack and sunk in a tight front quarter nelson. Moments later it was pin number 26 for Walsh and the 47th fall of his career, pulling him even with Viktor Sveda (1998-2002) for the all-time school record.

His second bout took an opposite track, starting with a high and ending in a downer. A successful video review challenge from the Indiana coaches gave Walsh a pair of near-fall points to end the first period leading 8-6. He added an escape tally in the second and carried a 9-6 edge into the final frame. The #6-seed, Nestor Taffur, stormed back though, tying the score at 10-10 with under 10 seconds left and posting a fall at the 6:57 mark.

Walsh will see a familiar face in the corner of the mat in his next bout. Former Hoosier teammate and current Army assistant coach, Paul Young, guides Paul Hancock against Walsh. Walsh brings along a 35-6 season mark while Hancock sits at 28-13.

LeBlanc was responsible for the only two takedowns of his opening bout, carding one in both the second and third periods. His 5-3 decision came over the #12-seed, Jackson Morse of Illinois. LeBlanc now has five career NCAA Championship wins, including two over seeded adversaries. Fellow unseeded grappler, Josh Veltre of Bloomsburg, kept it going in the second round with a 5-2 winner over LeBlanc.

LeBlanc's first Day Two showing pits him against Wyoming's Dakota Friesth (29-9). If LeBlanc is able to rack up three more wins, he'll not only be crowned an All-American but would also move into the top-10 all-time in school history with 39 total wins this season.

Luke Sheridan had his hand raised once as well, notching his first career win at nationals. After dropping into the consolation bracket pigtail match, Sheridan knocked out a seeded foe. The California native took down 12th-seeded Nick Vetterlein of Virginia Tech with a half minute left in the opening frame. He then added on a pair of escapes en route to a 4-2 decision.

Sheridan faced Wyoming's Benjamin Stroh next, digging out of a 4-0 hole and knotting the score at 4-4 with a second-period takedown. It was Stroh getting the takedown in the final period though, eliminating Sheridan from the competition. Sheridan concludes his junior campaign with an overall record of 28-16.

Session 3 is scheduled to begin at 11 am ET. ESPN3 will continue to broadcast every match on every mat.

Hartmann, Kerr-Brown Advance to Day 2 of Wrestling

March 20, 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY ? Duke University redshirt sophomore Conner Hartmann was a part of the many upsets on Day One of the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships as he posted a pair of upset victories to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals. Hartmann posted wins over the No. 10 and No. 7 seeds to advance to day two of wrestling.

Immanuel Kerr-Brown, in his first NCAA Championships appearance, also advanced to the second day of wrestling with a 1-1 record.

Hartmann, making his second NCAA appearance, edged No. 10 seed Jace Bennett 2-1 in his first match at 197 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Cornell's Bennett built up over a minute of riding time before Hartmann scored a big reversal for the first points of the afternoon. Bennett escaped moments later to make it 2-1, but Hartmann was able to ride out the two minutes to capture his first career NCAA postseason victory.

Up against the No. 7 seed Travis Rutt of Oklahoma, Hartmann led 1-0 after the first period and quickly built that to 4-0 with three nearfall points early in the second. The Port Orchard, Wash., native rode out the second period to build 1:48 of riding time with just two minutes left to wrestle. Starting the third period on bottom, Hartmann needed just seconds to escape for the 5-0 lead en route to the 6-0 triumph.

Hartmann will wrestle No. 2 seed and true freshman J'Den Cox of Missouri. Cox posted a major decision in his second round bout and is 35-2 on the year and captured the MAC Championship at 197 pounds.

At 157 pounds, Kerr-Brown dropped a hard-fought 10-3 decision to No. 14 seed Joseph LaVallee of Missouri to start the day. The bout with LaVallee was scoreless in the first period, but it was the freshman Tiger pulling away for the victory.

Coming back in the evening, Kerr-Brown looked to avenge a regular season loss to Drexel's Austin Sommer. The redshirt junior lost to Sommer by a narrow 9-8 margin during the year, but it was all Kerr-Brown as he dominated the action in the final two periods for his 26th win of the year.

Action gets underway at 11 a.m. (ET) with the quarterfinals and wrestleback second and third rounds happening concurrently. All action will be broadcast live on ESPNU with ESPN3 broadcasting from each mat.

Buckeyes remain in sixth place with 38 points

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? After the completion of three sessions, Ohio State remains in sixth place in the team race of the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships with 38 points behind winning performances from a quartet of Buckeyes. Senior Nick Heflin and redshirt-junior Logan Stieber advanced to the semifinals following wins at 197 pounds and 141 pounds, respectively, Friday morning at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla. Redshirt-sophomore Kenny Courts and redshirt-freshman Nick Tavanello answered day-one losses with consecutive victories Friday to continue their bids for All-America honors and a Top 3 finish.

Penn State is holding on to a slim lead for the team title with 61 points. Minnesota is second with 59 points, while Oklahoma State rounds out the Top 3 with 56 points.

In Friday's action, Stieber, the No. 2 seed, recorded his second fall of the NCAA championships with his 1:29 pin against No. 10 Todd Preston of Harvard. Stieber owned a 5-0 lead prior to notching his ninth fall of the season. Up next, Stieber will face Penn State's and No. 3 seed Zain Retherford in both wrestlers' third meeting of the season. -During a regular-season match-up, Retherford handed Stieber his first loss, a 4-2 setback in sudden victory, in 45 matches Dec. 15 in State College. Stieber answered the loss with a 7-3 win in the Big Ten Championships final March 9. Since the loss, Stieber has won 19 consecutive matches.

Like Stieber, Heflin, the No. 1 seed, will face a familiar opponent in the semifinals in No. 4 seed Scott Schiller of Minnesota. Heflin is 2-0 against Schiller this season, first beating the Gopher, 8-4, in the NWCA National Duals Feb. 16-17 in front of the home crowd in St. John Arena in Columbus and then again in the semifinals, 3-2, at the Big Ten championships March 8. After a second-round loss Thursday, Courts, the 10-seed, has won back-to-back matches to remain in contention for All-America honors. Friday morning, Courts edged Michigan's and No. 9 seed Domenic Abounader, 4-3, before surviving to beat Lazarus Reyes of Illinois, 6-4. Up next for Courts is Ophir Bernstein of Brown. Tavanello continued his impressive run Friday morning, downing a 12 and 13 seed. First, Tavanello beat Maryland's Spencer Myers, 4-2, before handing Ernest James of Edinboro a 3-1 loss. Tavanello will face No. 7 seed Mike McClure of Michigan State. Earlier this season, McClure pinned Tavanello in 2:50 in a Big Ten dual match-up.

Nick Roberts (125 pounds), Johnni DiJulius (133 pounds) and Mark Martin (174 pounds) were eliminated from competition after wrestleback losses.

Huskies' NCAA Run Comes to an End

Careers of Smith and Jillard end on the national stage

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? The Northern Illinois University wrestling team saw their season come to an end Friday in Oklahoma City, Okla., as seniors Nick Smith (Ida, Mich./Ida) and Rob Jillard (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) dropped consolation matches to seeded opponents.

Smith suffered a close 10-7 defeat against #10 Nick Soto of Chattanooga, while Jillard lost to eighth-seeded Dave Habat in a 13-3 major decision.

Smith gave Soto all he could handle and then some. The Huskie got on the board first with a takedown in the first 45 seconds for an early 2-0 lead. However, Soto countered with an escape and then took the lead when an official review credited the Moc with a takedown. Smith tied the match at 3-3 as time wound down in the first period, but Soto scored on a reversal to go back up, 5-3, early in the second period.

Undaunted, the Ida, Mich., native tied the match again with a reversal, but surrendered a crucial escape as time expired in the second period. Smith moved into a 7-6 lead with a reversal in the third period, only to have Soto escape his clutches again, putting the tally at 7-7 with time winding down in regulation. It was Soto, though, who scored the deciding points, getting a takedown with 10 seconds left and hang on for the win.

"It was a barnburner," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "The kid is a scrambler and a very good wrestler, (but) so is Nick. There were a couple situations there where we had some opportunities to tie the match. We had our opportunities nonetheless and the other guy came out on top today."

"I'm unbelievably proud of Nick and proud of what he's done for us in his career. I couldn't ask for a better student-athlete to be in our program. We're proud of his effort and what he was able to show this year."

Jillard kept the high-scoring Habat at bay for most of the first period, but a takedown and two-point nearfall put the Huskie in a 4-0 hole early. The Franklinville, N.J., native finished the first stanza with an escape, but the Fighting Scot's onslaught of takedowns were too much to handle, bringing his season and career to an end.

"Rob tried to get his offense going, but was shut down by some good defense," Ludwig said. "The other guy rode on top and things weren't going his way today. Once he got on his feet and put together an attack, he was the victim of some good defense."

"Rob left it all out on the mat. He's a guy that was consistent and stable for us in the lineup ? a guy we could always rely on, which is extremely important. He was a constant in the lineup for us and a dependable guy."

With the season now over for NIU, the Huskies will get busy preparing for the 2014-15 season. Stay tuned to NIUHuskies.com for the latest information on the Huskie wrestling team.

NC STATE WRESTLING: Gwiazdowski to Wrestle for National Title

Pack heavyweight will be in championship bout at 285 pounds tomorrow

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? NC State redshirt sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski has advanced to the finals at 285 pounds at the 2014 NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City. Gwiazdowski will try to become NC State's sixth individual national champion in wrestling tomorrow night on ESPN.

In today's quarterfinals, Gwiazdowski downed seventh seed Mike McClure of Michigan State 4-1, and then scored a 5-4 decision in the semifinals over third seed Adam Chalfant of Indiana.

With the two wins today, Gwiazdowski pushes his season record to 41-2 and ties former heavyweight and 1993 national champion Sylvester Terkay for most single-season wins in school history.

Gwiazdowski will take on two-time defending national champion Tony Nelson of Minnesota, the tournament's top seed, in the championship bout tomorrow night. The two have quite a rivalry the last two seasons. Earlier this season, Nelson defeated Gwiazdowski 1-0 at the Southern Scuffle, one of only two defeats for Gwiazdowski on the season. This past summer, Gwiazdowski scored a 9-0 tech fall win and also a 6-4 decision over Nelson in the third place bout, both at the U.S. World Team Trials.

Junior Tommy Gantt missed All-American honors by a spot, finishing ninth at 157 pounds. Gantt started the day with an 18-0 technical fall win over Aaron Walker of The Citadel. In a rematch of the ACC Championship, Gantt then defeated 10th seed Blaise Butler of Virginia 3-2. Gantt's tournament came to an end in the eighth place bout, falling to fifth seed Isaac Jordan of Wisconsin.

Sophomore Sam Speno was also in action today. Competing in his second straight trip to the NCAA Championships, Speno was in the wrestle backs at 141 pounds. He pulled off a 5-3 upset of fifth seed Chris Mecate of Old Dominion in sudden death 5-3, but his tournament run ended with a loss to 13th seed Stephen Dutton of Michigan.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Nick Heflin and Logan Stieber, members of the Ohio State wrestling team, will vie for NCAA titles Saturday night after winning their 197 and 141-pound semifinal matches, respectively, Friday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla. Heflin, a two-time All-American, will make his first appearance in an NCAA final. Stieber, who won back-to-back NCAA titles at 133 pounds in 2012 and 2013, will seek to become Ohio State's first three-time national champion.

Already 2014 All-Americans, Heflin and Stieber join select Buckeye company as three-time Buckeye All-Americans. The Ohio State pair join six other Buckeyes in the elite group ? Adam DiSabato (1990, 91, 93), Kevin Randleman (1991-93), Robert Sessley (1999, 01, 02), J.D. Bergman (2004, 07, 08), J Jaggers (2007-09) and Mike Pucillo (2008-09)

The finals of the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will air live on ESPN starting at 8 p.m. ET. The finals also will be streamed at www.espn3.com.

As a team, the Buckeyes moved up to fifth place with 52 points. Penn State continues to lead the field with 91 points. Minnesota is in second place with 90.5 points, while Oklahoma State rounds out the Top 3 (87.5 points).

Stieber, a redshirt-junior from Monroeville, Ohio, secured his place in the 141-pound final first after posting a 7-3 victory over Penn State's and No. 3 seed Zain Retherford. The Buckeye jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period behind a pair of takedowns. Stieber, the No. 2 seed, then extended his advantage with a takedown with 45 seconds left in the second before adding one final point on riding time.

"I just kind of wrestled my match better," Stieber said of this match vs. past matches vs. Retherford. "I controlled the pace of the takedowns, rode him when I needed to ride him. He got on a single leg, like he did the first match and I fought it off. So that was probably the big difference."

Stieber will face No. 4 seed Devin Carter of Virginia Tech in the final. Carter enters the match with an 18-0 record and Stieber is 29-1 overall.

Heflin's semifinal match vs. Minnesota's and No. 4 seed Scott Schiller was a dramatic affair that extended into a 2-1 tiebreaker win. Heflin, the No. 1 seed, wrestled Schiller to a scoreless first half before escaping in the second period after choosing bottom to open the stanza. Schiller answered with an escape of his own to eventually send the match into sudden victory. After a flurry of scrambles towards the end of the extra period, both wrestlers matched-up for a pair of 30-second tiebreakers. Schiller began the first 30 seconds on bottom and despite continued attempts to escape, Heflin held on for the shutout. In the next 30 seconds, Heflin managed to escape Schiller as the seconds ticked off the clock and secure his bid for an NCAA title.

"I could sit here and tell you it was fight, it was heart," Heflin said of his match vs. Schiller. "I'd be lying to you because I guarantee if you put that kid up here he would say I wanted it just as bad, fought just as hard. I'm just fortunate I came out on top and thank Christ for this opportunity to be there."

Heflin will enter his final match of his Buckeye career vs. No. 2 seed J'Den Cox of Missouri with a 28-1 record. Cox is 37-2.

A pair of Buckeyes in Kenny Courts (184 pounds) and Nick Tavanello (HWT) were eliminated from competition after suffering losses in their opening Friday night matches. Courts lost to Ophir Bernstein of Brown, 9-4, while Tavanello dropped a 10-2 major decision to No. 7 Mike McClure of Michigan State.

Ramos, Evans, Telford move on to semifinals

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The University of Iowa wrestling team advanced three wrestlers to the semifinals of the 2014 NCAA Championships Friday afternoon at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Tony Ramos (133), Mike Evans (174) and Bobby Telford (285) each won their respective quarterfinal match and will compete Friday night on ESPN for a spot in the NCAA finals.

Ramos, the No. 3 seed at 133, scored a takedown in the final 30 seconds to defeat Lehigh's sixth-seeded Mason Beckman, 3-1. Ramos will face Edinboro's A.J. Schopp in the semifinals. Schopp handed Ramos one of his two losses this season. The two have split two career meetings.

Evans and Telford both worked overtime to advance beyond the quarterfinals.

Evans, the No. 4 seed, escaped in the first tiebreak period to defeat Penn State's fifth-seeded Matt Brown, 5-4. Evans rode-out Brown from the top position before escaping from the bottom with eight seconds on the clock to advance to the first NCAA semifinal bout of his career. He'll face defending champion Chris Perry of Oklahoma State in the semis. Perry, the top-seed, is 2-0 all-time against Evans with a pair of one- point decisions (4-3, 5-4).

Telford, the No. 5 seed, escaped in the second tiebreak and rode-out Michigan's fourth-seeded Adam Coon to advance to his first career NCAA semifinal, 3-2. Telford faces two-time defending champion Tony Nelson in the semis. The two have split a pair of decisions this season.

Three Hawkeyes lost in the quarterfinals and fell into Friday night's consolation round. Cory Clark lost a 10-5 decision to top-seeded Jesse Delgado of Illinois. Defending champion Derek St. John fell to seventh-seeded Brian Realbuto of Cornell, 11-4; and Nathan Burak dropped a 6-3 decision to 14th-seeded Chris Penny of Virginia Tech.

"We have big challenges tonight," said UI head coach Tom Brands. "Three on top plus three more. That's where we're at. We have to do a better job of scoring points. It is that simple."

Iowa lost four wrestlers in the wrestle-backs. Nick Moore and Josh Dziewa both won in the morning session before being eliminated from the tournament with afternoon losses. Brody Grothus and Ethen Lofthouse were bounced from the tournament following morning losses.

The Hawkeyes are in fourth place heading into the semifinals with 42.5 points. Penn State leads the team race with 61 points, followed by Minnesota (59) and Oklahoma State (56). All three schools have four wrestlers in the semifinals.

Four Cowboy Wrestlers Punch Ticket to NCAA Finals

**Brackets and quotes attached

OKLAHOMA CITY ? The Oklahoma State wrestling squad went four-for-four in the NCAA semifinals, with Josh Kindig (149), Alex Dieringer (157), Tyler Caldwell (165) and Chris Perry (174) earning the chance to wrestle for NCAA individual titles.

OSU put itself in a position to compete for the team championship as it enters the final day in third place, trailing Penn State and Minnesota.

"It all depends on tomorrow," coach John Smith said. "I don't know how much wrestling is left here. I don't know how many additional points we need, but we gave ourselves an opportunity. On paper it didn't look like it was too close. It looked like there were too many horses in front of us. We kind of scratched and fought. Obviously, not without disappointment ? we lost a couple of guys we thought could do something, because of a lack of effort, but somebody picked up where they left off. That's what you've got to have as a team to have an opportunity to win it."

Also still alive in the tournament is redshirt sophomore and heavyweight Austin Marsden, who will wrestle for seventh on Saturday morning. Marsden secured his first All-America honor when he defeated JT Felix, 5-3, bringing Oklahoma State's All-American total to five.

Carrying a No. 11 seed all the way to the finals, Kindig became the first finalist for the Pokes, taking out No. 15 Mitchell Minotti of Lehigh with a 7-4 decision. Kindig, who is a first-time All-American, will face No. 5 Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern in the 149-pound finals.

"It's a great feeling to be where I'm at. Going in, it's a tough weight class so seeds really don't matter," Kindig said. "Coach has been telling us that everybody came to our city. It's our time to own the mat. I came in like I was the best and that's the way I wrestled. I just went out and wrestled and wasn't thinking about seeds or anything."

Sophomore and No. 3 seed Dieringer will face No. 9 Dylan Ness of Minnesota in Saturday's 157-pound finals. Dieringer earned the chance after he defeated No. 7 Brian Realbuto of Cornell in the semis, 7-4. Last year, Dieringer finished third in his first NCAA Championships appearance.

"I knew it was going to be a hard-fought match. He's a good competitor," Dieringer said. "I just wanted to do what Coach always tells me to and stay smart with my attacks. If I do that it's hard to stop me. It was a close match, but I had a lot of takedowns close to the edge. I think that's what kept me in the match. He did do something to his knee. I heard it. He's a good competitor and I respect him for keep fighting back. It was a fun match."

Senior and four-time All-American Caldwell earned a shot at the 165-pound national title when he defeated No. 3 Nick Sulzer of Virginia for the second time this season. The Wichita, Kan., native will see Penn State's David Taylor in the finals. Caldwell is making his second trip to the finals, with the first coming in 2011, while Taylor is a four-time finalist and 2012 national champ.

"You expect a guy like David Taylor to be in the finals, just getting his pass," Caldwell said. "He's been in there three times now and he's a national champ, so you expect that. Also, crazier things have happened, so you never know in this tournament. I just kind of focus on who's ahead of me, one match at a time."

Top-seed and defending national champion Perry will make his second-straight NCAA finals appearance on Saturday night in Chesapeake Energy Arena, taking on in-state rival and 2010 165-pound national champion Andrew Howe of Oklahoma at 174 pounds.

"This is what I wanted. I didn't want anybody else," Perry said. "I know this is the guy people think is better than me. Hands down, people believe that this guy is way better than me and they think I stole one in Norman and I want to go out tomorrow and prove that I can beat him twice, but I'm going to have to come out with better wrestling than that, for sure."

Tournament action will continue Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CT in Chesapeake Energy Arena. The finals can be watched on ESPN, beginning at 7 p.m.

Cowboys Eliminated After Day Two Of Nationals

Woods goes 1-1 Friday in consolations

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (March 21, 2014) Junior Shane Woods won one bout Friday morning to lead the University of Wyoming wrestling contingent on Day Two of the NCAA Championships.

Woods earned the biggest win of his career Friday, toppling 12th-seeded Taylor Meeks of Oregon State in the wrestleback bracket. He used his physical, aggressive style for a 5-3 win to advance, toppling the 2013 All-American. In his next bout versus Nick Bonnaccorsi (Pitt), he tied the bout with 1:15 remaining with an escape to force overtime. He couldn't fight off a deep shot by Bonnaccorsi with 33 seconds left in overtime, losing 6-4. The loss eliminated him from competition and he finished 2-2.

A tough outing for the other three Pokes resulted in their elimination as well. Juniors Tyler Cox (125 pounds) and Dakota Friesth (165) and redshirt freshman Benjamin Stroh (184) each finished 1-2 for the tournament with losses Friday. After Session III, UW was tied for 49th with three team points. It marked the first time since 2008 that Wyoming did not end up with an All-American.

"Friday is the toughest day of the tournament. It's a dogfight," Wyoming head coach Mark Branch said. "Woody wrestled the best he has all season, and especially against a kid who's beat him a couple of times this season and a returning All-American."

Cox, a 2013 All-American, dropped an 11-7 contest to seventh-seeded Bradley Taylor of Wisconsin in his only bout of the day. He got off to a rough start, getting into a 4-0 hole after giving up a takedown and back points, but fought back to make the deficit 8-5 to start the third. He scored to make it 9-7 with 40 seconds left, but gave up a takedown to end the bout. Cox finished the season with 29 wins and now has 89 career victories, 19th in UW history.

Friesth fell in a narrow 6-4 decision to Indiana's Ryan Leblanc on Friday morning. He appeared to have the tying takedown with one minute remaining, but the ensuing scramble produced no points.

Stroh was pinned in the first period by Illinois' Lazarus Reyes after the wrestlers traded shots. Lazarus came out on top for the takedown and subsequent fall.

"We wrestled tough and with a lot of effort and heart, but it was the little things that stumped us," Branch said. "It sums up the whole season ? coming up a little short. We had more downs than ups and it's something we've got to address and not accept and use to get better. It's been a frustrating year for me. We've constantly been fighting to create a culture that will get us to the next level."

Heflin, Stieber Will Vie for NCAA Titles Saturday

In team race, Buckeyes in fifth place with 52 points

Bernstein Secures All-American Status at NCAA Wrestling Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? Twelfth-seeded junior wrestler Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) became the fourth All-American in Brown wrestling history and the first since Tivon Abel in 1998 when he went 1-2 in day two action at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Chesapeake Energy Arena on Friday. Bernstein returns to action tomorrow to contend for seventh place in the 184-pound weight class when the medal round begins at 11 a.m.

Bernstein suffered a narrow 7-5 defeat to 13th-seeded Jack Dechow of Old Dominion in the 184-pound weight class quarterfinals to open the day. He then topped 10th-seeded Kenny Courts of Ohio State, 9-4, before falling to EIWA and Ivy League rival Lawrence Thomas of Penn, 8-5.

After picking up a 4-1 win over Zack Hernandez of Columbia and a 5-3 victory against Edinboro's Victor Avery yesterday, Bernstein could not overcome an early deficit against Dechow, who secured his second straight upset of a higher seed. Old Dominion's representative at 184 knocked off fourth-seeded Max Thomusseit of Pittsburgh in yesterday's second round.

Dechow launched ahead early with a one leg takedown and began building up riding time. After several resets, Bernstein finally stood up and broke the hands for the escape, but could not convert an elevated single before time ran out in the first period.

Bernstein stayed aggressive early in the second period only to have Dechow roll from the bottom into a reversal and extend his lead to 4-1. Brown's wrestler elevated his hips to escape a half nelson and make it 4-2 heading into the final period.

An early escape brought Bernstein with a point, 4-3, to open the third period, but Dechow countered a low shot with another takedown to take a 6-3 lead. A stalemate left Bernstein on bottom following a reset with 60 seconds remaining and Dechow cut him loose with riding time secured. It looked as though Dechow sealed the victory with a slick takedown on the edge of the circle but a video review revealed the wrestler to be out of bounds, giving Bernstein mere seconds to make a move.

Dechow circled as Bernstein fought for an angle and a pair of stalling calls left Bernstein just short as Old Dominion's wrestler emerged with the 7-5 decision.

Bernstein controlled his match against Courts from start to finish to attain All-American status by a 9-5 final score, earning three takedowns to Courts' one. The victory gives Bernstein 35 wins on the season, leaving him two shy of tying the Brown single season record set by Steve Thoma in 1991-92.

Against Thomas, who had bested Bernstein three times in regular season action, Brown's wrestler picked up an early takedown but quickly relinquished the lead on an escape and a Thomas takedown. The Penn grappler rolled Bernstein and just missed getting a near fall count on a cross wrist tilt, leaving the score at 3-2 in Thomas' favor after one period.

Bernstein started on top and worked in both boots for position but Thomas spun a reversal to move ahead 5-2. The lead shrunk when Bernstein opened the third period with an escape, only to have Thomas register another takedown when Bernstein missed low on an attempt single. Bernstein tossed Thomas for a reversal from bottom in the waning seconds to force a 7-5 score, falling just short as riding time awarded Thomas the final point.

For continued updates through tomorrow's medal round, follow the action with ESPN3.

Anthony Perrotti Becomes First All-American Since 2002

The 157-pounder will wrestle for seventh place Saturday at the Chesapeake Energy Arena

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (March 21, 2014) ? For the first time since 2002, Rutgers wrestling boasts an All-American. The unseeded redshirt sophomore 157-pounder Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) upset three top-16 opponents Friday at the Chesapeake Energy Arena en route to All-America status, defeating No. 6 Nestor Taffur in the consolation fourth round by a 10-2 major decision.

Perrotti used two falls and a major decision on Friday to become the 9th All-American wrestler in school history. After falling in his consolation quarterfinal match, he will wrestle in the seventh place bout Saturday against No. 5 Isaac Jordan (Wisconsin).

Redshirt sophomore heavyweight Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) came up short, 6-3, in his consolation third round match against No. 10 Jeremy Johnson (Ohio), ending his tournament.

Session IV

Perrotti completed his run at becoming an All-American in the consolation fourth round with a 10-2 major decision over No. 6 Nestor Taffur (Boston University). Taffur edged Perrotti twice in 2013-14 prior to the match, but the West Essex HS product won when it mattered most to become just the 9th All-American wrestler in Rutgers wrestling history. He achieved the 10th All-American status in school history with the win, as 142-pounder Anthony Surage (1980, 83) was a two-time All-American ? the only grappler in RU history to achieve that feat.

In his consolation quarterfinal match, Perrotti nearly maintained his Friday magic for another wild win. He drew No. 2 Derek St. John (Iowa) and found himself down, 5-2, heading into the final period. An escape in the period followed by a takedown with five seconds remaining tied the match at 5-5, as Perrotti nearly scored the two back points he needed to win.

However, time ran out, and despite a Rutgers challenge, the call was upheld. With 3:17 of riding time, St. John sealed the 6-5 win. Perrotti will take on No. 5 Isaac Jordan (Wisconsin) Saturday in the seventh place match.

Session III

Perrotti won his second consecutive match by fall against No. 16 Zach Brunson (Illinois) at the 4:29 mark, using a reversal after being down 2-1 to turn Brunson for the pin.

Perrotti wasted no time in advancing to the consolation third round, taking down No. 8 Roger Pena along the edge of the mat and driving down to win by fall in 10 seconds. The pin was the second-fastest by collegiate rules in NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships history. Clarence Richardson (LSU) holds the record, as he pinned Scot Mansur (Portland State) in nine seconds at 177 pounds in 1983.

Smith dropped a 6-3 decision in his consolation third round match against No. 10 Jeremy Johnson (Ohio) ending his 2014 NCAA Championships. Johnson recorded the first takedown and never looked back, holding Smith without a takedown in the match.

Smith exacted some revenge in his consolation second round match, topping Joe Stolfi (Bucknell), 10-6. Smith used three takedowns in the final period to seal the victory and move him into the consolation third round. Stolfi edged Smith, 9-7, in the 2014 EIWA Championships heavyweight finals.

Air Force Wrestlers Conclude Competition at NCAA Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? A pair of Air Force wrestlers concluded competition Friday at the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, being held at Chesapeake Energy Arena, to bring the 2013-14 season to an end.

Sophomore Josh Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo.), seeded fourth at 125 pounds, ended his tournament with a 4-3 loss to Lehigh's Darian Cruz in the consolation bracket. Cruz held a 2-1 lead after one period, while Martinez tied it up at 2-2 at the end of two periods. However, Cruz, who chose the neutral position to begin the final period, came up with a takedown with less than 20 seconds remaining. Although Martinez earned an escape with six seconds remaining, he was unable to come up with a winning score, finishing the season with a 33-5 overall record.

Meanwhile, senior captain Devin Hightower (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also competed for the Falcons on Friday, dropping an 8-0 major decision to 15th-seed Ryan Loder of Northern Iowa in the consolation bracket. Hightower wrapped up the 2013-14 season with an 18-13 overall mark.

OKLAHOMA CITY ? UNI wrestler Dylan Peters became the highest placing freshman at the NCAA national tournament since assistant coach Mark Schwab was fifth in 1986.

Joe Colon, Joey Lazor and Peters earned their first All-America titles. Colon led the team with his third-place finish. Last time UNI had three All-Americans was 2002.

"We have to win tough matches in tough situations, and Colon is the guy who did that for us," said head coach Doug Schwab.

UNI hasn't had a freshman earn All-America honors since Cedar Falls standout Tony Wieland took eighth in 1996.

The team was in 13th place heading into the finals. UNI hasn't cracked the top 10 since 1992.

"We not just taking short cuts," Colon said. "We are building, and we know what we have to do to win. We have to go out there and fight and we have to scrap and that's what we are doing in the room. And we have to carry that out on the mat."

125 ? DYLAN PETERS 6th

Peters, who has never given up bonus points in a match, held on to fight off a near fall against No. 16 Joey Dance. Peters countered back and was within one point nearing the end, but Dance prevailed with the 10-8 decision. Dance is the first true freshman to pick up All-American honors for Virginia Tech.

Peters had to settle for sixth place as Cory Clark earned a decision, winning 8-1.

133 ? JOE COLON 3rd

Colon dominated his first match to beat Mason Beckman of Lehigh 4-0 and won the rematch with A.J. Schopp of Edinboro. Colon's rise in the rankings came after a win earlier in the season when Colon beat Schopp and Ramos in back-to-back matches at the Midlands en route to a championship.

"It hurts, just like yesterday hurt," Colon said. "I don't have another chance to be a national champ, but I can go get bigger things in life: coach someone to a national championship, help some of the guys in the room become a nation champ, help this team ? help UNI - become national team champs. I don't know where that it is going to take me just going to take the same path I've been taking and keep my head up."

141 ? JOEY LAZOR 6th

Lazor suffered an injury early in the first period against No. 9 Evan Henderson. He closed the gap but was unable to close out the win, losing 11-8. Lazor was unable to return to the tournament, giving No. 3 Zain Retherford of Penn State the forfeit and fifth place.

Sheptock Advances to National Final

Top-seed faces Ruth of Penn State for 184-pound championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? Jimmy Sheptock defeated Old Dominion's Jack Dechow 3-2 in a hotly contested semifinal to advance to the 184-pound final of the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City Friday night.

The now two-time All-American will take on second-seed Ed Ruth of Penn State on Saturday night. The senior will attempt to win Maryland's first national title in wrestling since Gobel Kline took home the title at 152 pounds in 1969. Kline was also the last Terrapin to advance to a national final.

Against Dechow, Sheptock put on the type of solid performance that has marked his march through the top half of the 184-pound bracket. The Northampton, Pa. native took an early lead, capitalizing on a Dechow mistake to secure a takedown.

After the Monarch freshman logged an escape to start the second period, Sheptock wrestled smart, seeing off Dechow's rare attacks. The senior easily escaped from the down position at the start of the third before defending a few late Dechow shots to secure a 3-2 victory.

With the win, Sheptock pushed his record to a perfect 32-0. He joins Virginia Tech's Devin Carter and Penn State's David Taylor as the only undefeated wrestlers remaining in the competition.

In the quarterfinals, Sheptock faced off with unseeded Blake Stauffer of Arizona State. A single leg takedown with 20 seconds remaining in the first period gave Sheptock a 2-0 lead. The senior once again utilized a late takedown to extend the lead in the second period and finished with a 6-2 decision win.

Sheptock's victory guaranteed All-America status for the second straight season. Sheptock is Maryland's seventh multi-time All-American.

The finals of the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships begin tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET. Coverage can be seen live on ESPN and the WatchESPN app.

Four other Terrapins were also in action on Friday. Both Spencer Myers and Shyheim Brown lost their first match, while Christian Boley fell one match short of earning All-American honors.

At 141, Brown faced sixth-seeded Chris Dardanes and was unable to fend off the Minnesota grappler's takedowns in a 13-5 defeat. Myers gave up a takedown in the waning moments to drop a 4-2 decision Nick Tavanello of Ohio State.

Looking to become an All-American for the first time, Boley advanced via forfeit in his first match of the day before facing off with Braden Atwood of Purdue. In a rematch of the 2013 Midlands final, Boley repeated the result, getting past the 15th-seed by a 5-1 decision.

The two-time ACC Champion advanced to face Kyven Gadson of Iowa State. Boley succumbed to Gadson by fall at 2:44 in the final match of his career.

Boley finishes his time at Maryland with more than 100 wins and two ACC titles at 197 pounds.

The Terps complete the day in 19th place with 21 team points. The race for the overall title is a three-team affair. Penn State holds the lead with 91, while Minnesota is second with 90.5. Oklahoma St. is also still in contention with 87.5 points.
