Hartmann Scores All-America Honors; Spot on Podium

March 21, 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY ? Duke University redshirt sophomore Conner Hartmann etched his name in the Duke wrestling records book Friday night by becoming the second All-American in program history. Hartmann captured two wins during the evening session to guarantee a top-six finish and a spot on the podium.

Duke's last All-American wrestler was Konrad Dudziak in 2010 when he finished fourth at heavyweight. Over the course of the two days in Okalhoma City, Hartmann upset the No. 10, No. 7 and No. 11 seeds.

Hartmann, after falling to No. 2 seed J'Den Cox in the championship quarterfinal in the afternoon session, rebounded in a big way with a dominant performance over Bonnacorsi. Already having beaten the Pittsburgh 197-pounder twice previously, Hartmann was outstanding on top in the second to secure two minutes of riding time.

Bonnacorsi optioned to start the third period to give Hartmann the first point of the match. The Port Orchard, Wash., native with riding time locked up added a takedown to earn the 4-0 win and All-America honors.

In his final match on Friday, Hartmann scored a takedown in overtime to stop No. 11 seed Nathan Burak of Iowa. Hartmann used a pair of escapes to force overtime with Burak where he scored a takedown with 30 seconds remaining in the sudden victory period.

Immanuel Kerr-Brown also opened the day against a seeded wrestler. Kerr-Brown battled hard against No. 13 seed Dylan Alton of Big Ten power Penn State, but could not come back from a big first period from Alton in a 5-2 loss.
Alton scored a takedown and three nearfall points to hand the redshirt junior his 13th loss of the season. Kerr-Brown finishes the year with a 26-12 mark and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career.

Hartmann opens the final day of competition against No. 4 seed Scott Schiller. The winner advances to the third-place match.

Brown's Bernstein Finishes NCAA Wrestling Championship in Eighth Place

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? Twelfth-seeded junior All-American wrestler Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) finished in eighth place in the 184-pound weight class after falling 6-1 against sixth-seeded Jacob Swartz of Boise State at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Chesapeake Energy Arena on Saturday. Bernstein became the fourth All-American in Brown wrestling history and the first since Tivon Abel in 1998 when he went 1-2 yesterday. He finishes the season with 36 wins, just one win shy of the Brown single season record set by Steve Thoma in 1991-92.

Swartz earned the only points of the first period on a takedown, spinning behind Bernstein to take a 2-0 lead. Bernstein battled Swartz's early underhook to a stalemate and then got in tight with scissors across the body, only to be met with a whistle and reset that led to a Swartz takedown. The Boise State All-American secured a tight armbar and Bernstein struggled to elevate his hips, leading to lots of riding time for Swartz and a late stalling call.

Bernstein chose the bottom to start the second and separated the hands for an escape to make the score 2-1. He followed with a low single that Swartz blocked and countered with another spinning takedown similar to his first period shot. Swartz laid a knee into Bernstein's forearm and looked for the tilt, cashing in on a point from a stalling call to lead 5-1 after two periods. A neutral start to the third period allowed Swartz to wrestle conservatively and use his riding time for a final point in the 6-1 decision.

Bernstein completes the season with a 36-11 record, while first-year Head Coach Todd Beckerman mentored an All-American in his inaugural season at the helm of the Bears.

#6 Jacob Swartz (Boise State) dec. #12 Ophir Bernstein (Brown), 6-1

Logan Stieber Becomes Ohio State's First Three-Time National Champion

In team race, Buckeyes finish sixth with 57 points

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Logan Stieber, a redshirt-junior on the Ohio State wrestling team, once again etched his name in the Buckeye records book as he became the first Ohio State wrestler to win three national titles. Stieber, a native of Monroeville, Ohio, won his third-consecutive title Saturday night, beating No. 4 seed Devin Carter of Virginia Tech, 10-1, in the 141-pound bout at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Stieber, who is now a three-time All-American and three-time Big Ten champion, is just one of eight Buckeyes to garner three such laurels. Stieber joins teammate Nick Heflin, as well as Adam DiSabato (1990, 91, 93), Kevin Randleman (1991-93), Robert Sessley (1999, 01, 02), J.D. Bergman (2004, 07, 08), J Jaggers (2007-09) and Mike Pucillo (2008-09). Stieber concludes the 2013-14 season with a 30-1 record and a career mark of 95-6. Stieber's .941 career win percentage (95-6) is No. 3 all-time at Ohio State. He trails No. 1 Mark Coleman (50-2; .962) and No. 2 Rex Holman (69-3; .958) all-time. Since losing his first match in 45 bouts to Penn State freshman Zain Retherford Dec. 15, Stieber has won 21 consecutive matches. Twenty-eight of Stieber's 30 victories have come via either major decision (7), technical fall (11) or fall (10).

"[This]Feels great," Stieber said. "I know Devin is a really, really tough individual. I knew he had to be really tough to make it through that injury. So it felt good to get through my offense and ride hard. And my defense was great and I just kept getting after him."

In his match vs. Carter, Stieber jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period on an early takedown and already had accrued more than two minutes of riding time. Choosing bottom in the second period, Stieber recorded the escape before adding another takedown to his total. Entering the third period with a 5-0 advantage and the riding time locked, Stieber solidified his third national title with two more takedowns.

Nick Heflin is the 2014 197-pound runner-up. A senior from Massillon, Ohio, Heflin dropped a close 2-1 decision to true freshman J'Den Cox of Missouri. After a scoreless first period, Cox and Heflin traded escapes in the second and third periods. However, Heflin was called for his second stall of the match in the final stanza which awarded Cox a point. As time expired, Heflin nearly scored a takedown for a 3-2 lead, but after an official review the non-call was confirmed.

Heflin concludes his Buckeye wrestling career in impressive fashion. A three-time All-American and 2014 Big Ten Champion and 2011 Big Ten Runner-Up at 174 pounds, Heflin amassed a 99-28 overall record. Heflin is a three-time captain (2012, 2013 and 2014) who joins an elite group of Buckeyes as a three-time All-American. Only eight Buckeyes have garnered All-America honors in their careers.

In the team race, Ohio State finished sixth with 57 points. Penn State clinched the title with 109.5 points, while Minnesota came in second with 104 points. Oklahoma State rounded out the Top 3 with 96.5 points.

IOWA WRESTLING

5 Hawkeyes finish the season with All-America honors

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Five University of Iowa wrestlers completed their respective All-America seasons today in the medal round of the 2014 NCAA Championships at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Cory Clark, Derek St. John, Mike Evans, Nathan Burak, and Bobby Telford will be among the 80 Division I wrestlers honored at the NCAA Parade of All-Americans on Saturday before the national finals.

St. John placed fifth at 157 pounds to earn All-America honors for the fourth straight year. A senior from Parnell, Iowa, St. John is just the 18th four-time All-American in program history. He finished his career with one NCAA title, one Big Ten title, and 106 career wins, but said it's too early to process what he has done the last four years.

"I came (to this tournament) for a purpose, and placing the lowest you've placed in four years kind of stings," said St. John, who finished fourth as a freshman, second as a sophomore, and first as a junior. "There's been a lot of big matches, and a lot of accomplishments, but you have to come ready to go and you need to be ready to go every match. It's a get what you deserve kind of thing I guess."

Evans and Telford both earned All-America honors for the second time.

Evans placed sixth for the second straight year. He finished the season with a career-best 28 wins and a team-high six technical falls. Telford rebounded from an injury at the 2013 tournament to place fourth at 285 pounds this year. He previously placed fifth as a freshman in 2012.

Clark and Burak each climbed to the All-America stand for the first time in their careers. Clark went 5-2 in his first appearance at the national tournament and placed fifth at 125.

"I've always set high goals. This year's was winning a national championship and it didn't happen," said Clark, who is the fourth Hawkeye freshman in five years to earn All-America honors. "It's hard not to reach those goals, but the experience will definitely help going into next year."

Burak was stopped short of the All-America stand as a freshman in the round of 12 last season, but he knocked through that door in 2014 and finished in eighth place at 197.

With only championship matches remaining, Iowa has 74.5 points and is assured a fourth-place finish. Minnesota is pacing the field with 104 points. Penn State (101.5), Oklahoma State (87.5), and Edinboro (62) round out the top five.

The Hawkeyes have one wrestler remaining in the championship bracket. Three-time All-American Tony Ramos will chase his first national title tonight at 7 p.m. (CT). The finals, televised on ESPN and streamed online at ESPN3.com, will start with the 174-pound title match and end at 165 pounds.

IOWA WRESTLING

RAMOS WINS GOLD

OKLAHOMA CITY -- University of Iowa senior Tony Ramos won the 133-pound 2014 NCAA Wrestling championship Saturday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Ramos scored two nearfall points in the first tiebreak to defeat Wisconsin's fifth-seeded Tyler Graff, 3-1. Ramos, the No. 3 seed and returning NCAA runner-up, wrestled his way into the championship finals with late heroics, and the final match of his collegiate career was no different.

After a scoreless first period, Ramos and Graff exchanged escapes in the second and third periods to send the match to overtime tied, 1-1.

Neither man scored in the first sudden-victory period, and Ramos was unable to get out from bottom in the first tiebreak, meaning he had to extend the match by staying on top of Graff for 30 seconds, or find a way to expose Graff's shoulders to the mat. He chose the latter.

"I knew he liked to roll," said Ramos. "As soon as he hit that roll, I was just finding some way to score. I caught that arm and thought if I just fall back a little bit… I'm just glad I got it."

Wisconsin challenged the official's call, but video review confirmed the back-points and Ramos rushed into the stands to embrace his family.

"It's awesome. I'm excited. I can't wait to get out of here, take that drug test, celebrate with my family, get my bracket, go home and put it on the wall," said Ramos, who became the 53rd Hawkeye in school history to win the NCAA title.

"He put together five matches in the 'W' column," said UI head coach Tom Brands. "The match was similar where you have to ride to win. The way this one went was overtime, the Big Ten final with Graff was ride him out in the third period. We ride him, we get the nearfall, and we held him."

Ramos defeated Graff in the Big Ten finals on March 9. His national title marks the 61st time in program history a wrestler has won both championships in the same season. NC STATE WRESTLING: Gwiazdowski Wins 2014 National Championship
Pack heavyweight defeats two-time defending national champion Tony Nelson of Minnesota

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? Redshirt-sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski of the NC State wrestling team became the program's sixth national champion Saturday night, as he captured a 4-2 win over top-seed Tony Nelson of Minnesota in the finals at 285 pounds at the 2014 NCAA Championships.

Gwiazdowski is NC State's sixth individual to win a wrestling national title, and the third heavyweight following in the footsteps of Tab Thacker in 1984 and Sylvester Terkay in 1993.

After a scoreless first period, Gwiazdowski chose bottom to start second and was unable to escape Nelson's hold as Nelson recorded 2:00 of ride time. To start the third, Gwiazdowski gave up the escape point but then scored the match's first takedown to go up 2-1.

Nelson then took an injury timeout due to an injured left ankle, and when the competition resumed Gwiazdowski chose to start neutral. With 30 seconds left, Gwiazdowski got a hold of Nelson's leg and kept his right foot inbounds, recorded the decisive takedown with 21 seconds left, and rode Nelson the rest of the bout. Nelson got a point for ride time, but Gwiazdowski took the final 4-2.

Gwiazdowski finished the season 42-2, establishing a new single season wins record at NC State. To finish the 2013-14 campaign, he won his last 20 matches and 11 of his final 15 wins were all against ranked opponents. The 2014 ACC Champion, Gwiazdowski went a perfect 20-0 in duals this year.

"We are obviously very excited for Nick and for our program," said head coach Pat Popolizio. "There is a lot of coaching history with us and Nick, he is a sport and always has the right attitude both on and off the mat.

"Our team has made huge strides from last year. We set out to be a top-25 team and accomplished that this year. We have a great group of guys, and this national championships is a huge accomplishment for all of us. "

While the NCAA Championships are still ongoing, the Pack is guaranteed a top-25 finish, its first since 2009. NC State is one of only three ACC schools that will finish in the top-25 in 2014. In addition to Gwiadowski's national championship at 285 pounds, the Pack had four others compete at the NCAA Championships.

Junior Tommy Gantt missed All-America honors by one spot, as he placed ninth at 157 pounds. Sophomore Sam Speno automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second straight year and went 2-2 including an upset of the fifth seed at 141 pounds. Redshirt-senior KaRonne Jones (197) and freshman Pete Renda (174) also competed this weekend.

Under second-year head coach Pat Popolizio NC State has been on the fast track to success. Before Popolizio took over the Wolfpack program, NC State finished 56th nationally in both 2010 and 2011 and 44th in 2012.

With seven new starters in his first season at NC State last year, Popolizio had three wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships and the Pack finished 63rd overall.

In addition to results on the mat, Popolizio and his staff compiled the 10th-best recruiting class in 2013 and the 17th-best nationally in 2014 according to WIN Magazine.

"Congratulations to Nick on a remarkable accomplishment," said NC State Director of Athletics Debbie Yow. "Wolfpack Nation loves wrestling and appreciates the extraordinary progress made by Coach Pop, his staff and our athletes in two short years. This is only the beginning of what promises to become a top program, both in the ACC and nationally."

Perry, Dieringer Claim NCAA Individual Titles

OKLAHOMA CITY ? The Oklahoma State wrestling team crowned two national champions en route to a third-place team finish at the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships Saturday night, with Chris Perry winning the 174-pound title in the first bout of the night and Alex Dieringer claiming the 157-pound championship with a bonus-point victory.

"I think my goal every year as a coach is to walk away from the national tournament with a good feeling," coach John Smith said.

"Although we had a third-place finish, I like the fact that we made a run at it. Back in early February after losing five-straight matches this year, it didn't look like it was coming together, and it did for us."

For the second year in a row, the NCAA Championships finals began at 174 pounds with Oklahoma State's Chris Perry setting the tone for the night and winning his second-straight national title with a 4-0 decision over Oklahoma's second-seeded Andrew Howe.

The first period ended scoreless, and Perry elected to start the second period on bottom. He escaped just six seconds into the second period, and the two hand fought until halfway through the second period when Perry scored a takedown on the edge to take a 3-0 lead. The Cowboy rode out the Sooner for the remainder of the period, gaining more than a minute of riding time to enter the final period. Howe chose a neutral start for the third period, and the two stayed on their feet the rest of the bout as Perry sealed another national title and his second-straight win over Howe this year.

"I told everybody I was going to set the tone this match," Perry said. "I told them I would make adjustments from the last time I wrestled him, and I did. I hand fought him a little more last time. This time I knew he thought I was going to not shoot on him, and I wanted to let him know right off the whistle I'm coming for you. Like Coach (Smith) said before I ran out of the tunnel, go out there and set the tone and let him know you're here to go."

Dieringer's title was the first of his career and came via 13-4 major decision over No. 9 seed Dylan Ness of Minnesota.

The sophomore two-time All-American jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first period with a takedown and nearfall and never looked back. He added a pair takedowns, another nearfall and a riding time advantage of more than two minutes to seal his team-best 19th bonus point win of the year.

"Winning on that big stage, there's really nothing better," Dieringer said. "I've been working so hard in the room, doing extra workouts, all that. So to know that it all paid off, it's a great feeling."

After a stellar tournament appearance, No. 11 seed Josh Kindig finished his third NCAA Championships as a finalist and a first-time All-American.

The junior turned in the best NCAA performance of his career and nearly ended it with a national title, but fell in a hard-fought sudden victory to Northwestern's fifth-seeded Jason Tsirtsis, 3-1.

The fourth Cowboy finalist to wrestle was senior Tyler Caldwell, who faced top-seeded and undefeated David Taylor of Penn State.

Caldwell held his own against the favored Taylor, but fell in a decision to the Hodge Trophy winner, 6-0.

It marked Caldwell's second runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships and was his fourth All-America honor.

Sophomore Austin Marsden was also in action on Saturday. Despite losing his final bout of the tournament, Marsden finished in eighth place to earn his first All-America honor.

Oklahoma State's third-place finish marked its second-straight year to finish in the top three at the event and record at least five All-Americans.

"We made a good run at it and we had two NCAA individual champions," Smith said. "We had a two-timer with Chris Perry and then added a new one to the list with Alex Dieringer. We have three All-Americans returning next year and I look forward to beginning the process again."

Sheptock Places Second at NCAA Championships

Senior is highest Terrapin finisher since 1969

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? Jimmy Sheptock placed second in the 184-pound division at the 2014 NCAA Championships after falling to Penn State's Ed Ruth, 7-2, in the final at Chesapeake Energy Arena Saturday night.

The senior's finish is the highest for a Terrapin since Gobel Kline won the title at 152 pounds in 1969. Sheptock's second-place finish is the first since Ernie Fischer was the runner-up at 167 pounds in 1954.

"I'm really proud of Jimmy," head coach Kerry McCoy said. "He had an awesome career and will go down as one of our program's best."

Ruth set the tone for the match with a takedown in the opening 20 seconds of the bout. Sheptock quickly escaped, but Ruth secured another takedown and rode out Sheptock for the remainder of the period.

The Terrapin captain chose the down position in the second period. Despite numerous explosions from the bottom, Ruth was able to control Sheptock and maintain the ride for the entire period.

The reigning national champ took the bottom to start the third period and reversed Sheptock for another two points. Sheptock would escape, but Ruth would thwart his late attacks to secure his third straight national championships.

Sheptock finishes his career as once of the most decorated wrestlers in Maryland history. The two-time All-American is only the fourth Terp national finalist in history. He is also a three-time ACC Champion and won the 2013 Midlands title. His career record is a spectacular 129-20.

Taylor Walsh Leads NCAA in Total Falls

March 23, 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY - Indiana's redshirt junior Taylor Walsh brought home some hardware, winning the NCAA Division-I Most Falls Award. He was presented a plaque commemorating his 22 D-I pins (26 overall) during the post-championships award ceremony.

Walsh destroyed the previous school record for pins in a season, topping the old mark of 19 held by Rob Chamberlin in 1981. With another year donning the Cream and Crimson, Walsh is also nearly guaranteed to own the career record as well. Walsh will enter his senior campaign tied for the all-time mark of 47 pins, needing just one more stick to take sole possession and surpass Viktor Sveda (1998-2002).

Sulzer was the aggressor from the start, quickly taking Moreno down and building a 7-1 lead through two periods after riding Moreno for the full second period and picking up three back points.

Sulzer was in control through the first two periods against Monk, taking a 6-2 lead to the final period. Monk took Sulzer down early in the period and was able to lock up a cradle and get three back points before getting the pin.

- Perrotti's 10-second pin against No. 8 Roger Pena (Oregon State) was the second fastest in NCAA Wrestling Championships history by collegiate rules. Clarence Richardson (LSU) holds the record, as he pinned Scot Mansur (Portland State) in nine seconds at 177 pounds in 1983.

- Perrotti entered the weekend with a 1-5 record against ranked opponents in 2013-14. After losing to No. 11/14/13 (AWN/InterMat/W.I.N.) Blaise Butler (Virginia) by a 7-6 margin to start the tournament, Perrotti defeated three ranked foes in a row including No. 9/9/9 Roger Pena (Oregon State), No. 14/NR/17 Zach Brunson (Illinois) and No. 8/8/7 Nestor Taffur (Boston University) to secure All-America status.

- As a team the Scarlet Knights finished 34th with 11.5 points. It was the second-highest finish in Goodale's tenure, as the team finished 32nd in 2010-11 and in 2009-10. However, RU's 11.5 points came with just four wrestlers in the field. The squad had seven NCAA qualifiers in 2009-10 and a school record eight in 2010-11.

Perry and Dieringer Up For Hodge Trophy

STILLWATER, Okla. ? Oklahoma State wrestlers Chris Perry and Alex Dieringer are among five finalists for the 2014 WIN Magazine/C.H. Dan Hodge Trophy, presented by ASICS.

The Hodge Trophy, named after the former three-time NCAA champion (1955-57) from the University of Oklahoma, is the highest non-academic award a collegiate wrestler can receive. It has been presented every year to the nation's best wrestler since 1995. The winner of the award is selected based on his record, number of pins, dominance, quality of competition, past credentials, sportsmanship and heart.

This year, wrestling fans can once again give their input by voting for their favorite wrestler at www.win-magazine.com. Fan votes are due by Friday, March 28, at 5 p.m. CST. Only one vote per person.

The fan vote will account for two of the 45 votes. The remainder of the votes will come from national wrestling media, retired college coaches from different regions of the country, representatives of national wrestling organizations and all previous Hodge winners.

Dieringer, from Port Washington, Wisc., earned his second All-American honor and first national title at 157 pounds with a 13-4 major decision over Minnesota's Dylan Ness in Oklahoma City. The Cowboy sophomore finished 37-1 on the season, which included 12 pins, five technical falls and two major decisions. Dieringer's only loss was at the hands of the 2013 NCAA champion and Iowa's Derek St. John, 2-1, on Jan. 10 in Iowa City. Dieringer has strung together a 72-4 career record at OSU.

Perry capped off his career at OSU with his second-straight NCAA individual title, defeating Oklahoma's Andrew Howe, 4-0, in the 174-pound finals. Perry, who produced a third-place finish in 2012 before defeating Penn State's Matt Brown in the 2013 national championship, finished the season with a 35-1 record. His bonus-point victories included seven pins, four technical falls and six major decisions. Perry's only loss this season was against Howe, 4-2, on Dec. 1 in Norman, Okla., which he avenged in the Big 12 finals and the 2014 NCAA Championship finals. Perry's career record at OSU was 125-11.

The other finalists joining the two Cowboys are Logan Stieber (141) of Ohio State and David Taylor (165) and Ed Ruth (184) of Penn State.

Oklahoma State Senior Salute: Chris Perry

STILLWATER
? "Senior Salute" is a weekly feature that asks 2014 Cowboy seniors
what their careers meant to them, providing commentary from each senior
wrestler, as well as coach John
Smith. The first edition features Chris Perry, who wrapped up his OSU
career with his second-consecutive national championship. Their
comments:

Chris Perry

What did your time at Oklahoma State mean to you?

"It
was something special because I accomplished a lot of goals that I
wanted to do. At the same time, the people that I met and became
associated
with can take me farther in my life and can take me where I want to get
to."

How has OSU prepared you for your future?

"It
helped me in the business aspect and in building my work ethic. I work
with people really well, and I've learned to relate to people really
well. I've also had a strong work ethic thanks to wrestling. And I
understand what it takes to get to the top of, not only school, but also
school and every other aspect of life."

What is your favorite memory of your time as a Cowboy?

"Nationals
this year. It was awesome because I had a big challenge ahead of me and
I was able to do it. That was what I wanted to get done."

What would you tell someone who is thinking about being a Cowboy?

"There's
no better place to be. We have great fans, great support and great
coaches. I couldn't ask for anything more. We have great facilities.
You're basically getting brought into another family and you have that
support system there at all times."

What will you miss most about OSU?

"The
challenges. There are always challenges down the road, but the college
grind is a different kind of grind. You'll never get to see it again.
During season it might be hard on people, but you learn to appreciate
it when you're done. It's made me a better person and a better wrestler.
Now, I understand what it takes to really succeed at a college level."

What do you think about what you've added to your family's legacy?

"It's good
because I also created my own legacy. I feel like the first national
title helped me to be a part of my family's legacy, but I think this
year also helped me create my own. There's more to come,
I feel like. I just have to stay focused and continue to do what I do. I
think good things will come."

What is next for you?

"I'm wrestling in the World Team Trials in Wisconsin at the end of May and also the University Trials a week before that."

Coach
John Smith

What has
Chris Perry
meant to OSU?

"First off, he's
a great athlete to coach ? everything you want, from passion to drive
to hunger. There isn't any question we made some nice runs at
championships because of Chris and his leadership. He'll
go down as one of the great, great wrestlers of Oklahoma State."

What do you expect from Chris moving forward?

"I
think Chris is going to continue to wrestler well and look toward 2016.
He's got an uphill battle because he's going to have to move to 189
pounds. He's got a tough road that works against him because of the
weight class, but it's definitely not something in the long run that
will hold him back."

What will you miss most about coaching Chris at the collegiate level?

"I
think one thing that he gave the team is that he's very unselfish. He
helped a lot of guys on the team get things right both mentally and
physically.
Sometimes there's a tendency just to focus on yourself, but great
leaders also focus on helping others get better, and that's what he
did."

BISON WRESTLING EARNS NWCA ACADEMIC AWARD, PETROV NAMED TO ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Bison Rank Seventh Nationally in Team GPA

LEWISBURG, Pa. ? The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) on Wednesday announced its annual All-Academic Top 30 Teams and Bucknell's wrestling squad ranks seventh nationally in grade-point average. Additionally, sophomore 125-pounder Paul Petrov (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) earned a spot on the NWCA All-Academic Team.

Bucknell's team GPA was a stellar 3.3, placing its third among EIWA programs and seventh overall. The Bison were the highest ranked of the nine newcomers to the list. Harvard repeated in the top spot with a 3.3657 GPA.

The team GPA is determined using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. A total of 10 of these come from the wrestlers entered in the NCAA Tournament conference qualifier.

A first-time NCAA qualifier this past March, Petrov is an accounting and financial management major with a GPA of nearly 3.7. He placed sixth at the EIWA Championships after advancing to the semifinals and followed that with a 1-2 record at NCAAs.

A team captain who never lost more than two bouts in a row, Petrov finished the campaign with a 31-9 record, including 17-3 in dual competition. His 31 victories placed him tied for 10th on the program's single-season wins list and his 51-23 career mark puts him second among current Bison in career victories.

Petrov recently shared the William A. Graham IV Most Outstanding Wrestler Award and won the Class of 2010 Leadership Award at Bucknell's annual end-of-season team banquet.

Bucknell finished the 2013-14 season with a 10-11 overall record and was 5-4 in EIWA duals, marking its first above-.500 conference finish since 2009-10. The Bison wrestled six ranked opponents, bringing its eight-year total to 44.

"Brown's curriculum is rigorous and challenging, and this exemplifies just how hard every one of our team members works in the classroom, while also working hard in our wrestling room to help us achieve success on the mat."

Bernstein, Brown wrestling's first All-American since 1998, is a political science concentrator. Also an Academic All-Ivy selection, Bernstein finished eighth at the NCAA Championships and posted a 36-11 record, just one win shy of tying Brown's single season record.

IOWA WRESTLING
McDonough Sweeps Garrett, will Represent United States at University World Championships

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa national champion Matt McDonough swept Cornell's Nahshon Garrett in a best-of-three challenge series and will represent the United States at 57 kg at the 2014 University World Championships in Pecs, Hungary on July 8-12.

"It feels good but I'm already thinking about the next step," said McDonough, who was a United States Junior World Team member in 2010. "I have a short turnaround so there is not a lot of time to pat yourself on the back. It is time to look at the next challenge."

McDonough defeated Garrett, 16-10, 15-5. He scored 14 of the final 16 points to erase an 8-2 deficit in the opening round, and built a 6-0 lead en route to a technical fall in Round 2.

"I knew he was explosive, so it was a matter of eliminating space. I have been working hard at getting ahold of guys and effectively getting to where I am good. I want to grab ahold and get to the leg. Today was about keeping cool and doing what I need to do," McDonough said.

"You know he is going to come out twice as hard in Round 2, so you can't think it is over. Obviously there was some momentum after the first match, so you look at it like you're one win away from a World Team, and you rule with an iron fist."

McDonough is the fourth Hawkeye, and third lightweight, to earn a spot on a 2014 United States World Team. Tony Ramos is the United States 57 kg representative at the World Championships, and Thomas Gilman is the 55 kg representative at the Junior World Championships.

UI national champion Brent Metcalf will represent the United States at 65 kg at the World Championships.

McDonough will be the first Hawkeye to take the mat when he leaves for Hungary from the U.S. training camp on July 3.

"I was the first one out throughout my collegiate career, so it's kind of exciting to know I'll be able to go out and set the pace for my teammates," he said. "I'm going to wrestle how I know best, and that is with intensity for six minutes, or however long it takes."

Terps Announce 2013-14 Schedule

Maryland set to make a repeat trip to the Grapple at the Garden

http://www.umterps.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=29700&ATCLID=209133456

2013-14 Schedule

COLLEGE PARK, Md. ? A return trip to Madison Square Garden to participate in the Grapple at the Garden and a trip Ann Arbor to face future Big Ten rival Michigan highlight the University of Maryland wrestling team's 2013-14 schedule, which head coach Kerry McCoy announced on Wednesday.

After facing Nebraska and Ohio State in the inaugural Grapple at the Garden last year, the Terps are scheduled to match up with Cornell and Rutgers at this year's event. Maryland will also travel to Stanford as part of a west coast trip that also includes the Roadrunner Open at CSU Bakersfield.

The Terrapins schedule features notable local showdowns against American and Navy, along with their New Year's trip to Northwestern for the Midlands Championships. The home slate includes the annual Terrapin Duals (Alderson-Broaddus, Johns Hopkins, Kutztown) along with duals against American, Duke, NC State, Penn and Pittsburgh.

"The schedule is a good mix of traditional opponents and new competition along with some exciting trips," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We have our traditional ACC and local rivalries, and in preparation for our transition to the Big Ten we have Michigan on the schedule.

"I think it will challenge our guys, but if we do what we are capable of doing it will be a very successful year."

Maryland unofficially opens its 2013-14 campaign with the Red and Black Wrestle-Offs on Oct. 27 in preparation for the Terrapin Duals on Nov. 3. The Terps will square off against Alderson-Broaddus, Johns Hopkins and Kutztown in the season-opening event.

Following a week off, the Terps head to Stanford to grapple with the Cardinal on Nov. 16 and wrestle in the Roadrunner Open the following day.

Maryland returns home just before Thanksgiving and welcomes Penn to Comcast Pavilion (Nov. 22) before heading to New York City to wrestle the Big Red and Scarlet Knights at the Grapple at the Garden (Dec. 1). The Terps wrestle in their final home meet of 2013 against Pittsburgh on Dec. 6.

After a break for finals and the Christmas holiday, the Terps head to Evanston, Ill., for the prestigious Midlands Championships. The two-day event (Dec. 29-30) features several of the nation's top teams and wrestlers.

Maryland opens 2014 with five consecutive road dual meets beginning with Michigan (Jan. 5). One week later, the Terps travel to Navy (Jan. 11) following by their ACC opener against Virginia Tech (Jan. 19). The road trip concludes with a dual at North Carolina (Jan. 24) and at Virginia (Jan. 31).

Maryland has the first of three consecutive home meets against Duke on Feb. 8 and continues the homestand against NC State on Feb. 14. The Terps play host to the Battle of the Beltway against American on Feb. 16 in the final home dual of the season before closing the regular season at George Mason on Feb. 20.

Virginia Tech plays host to the ACC Championships in Blacksburg on March 8. The NCAA Championships are set for March 20-22 in Oklahoma City.

Eiter Joins Maryland Coaching Staff as Assistant Coach

COLLEGE PARK, Md. ? University of Maryland wrestling head coach Kerry McCoy announced the addition of United States Olympian and former University of Pennsylvania coach Rob Eiter as an assistant coach Friday.

Eiter arrives at Maryland following nine seasons at Penn, six as the head coach, producing four All-Americans in his six years at the helm. The native Chicagoan brings Big Ten experience to College Park as well having served as an assistant at Northwestern for four seasons prior to taking over the Quakers.

"Rob is a great addition," said McCoy. "He's got a ton of experience in the sport. Being a former head coach, being an Olympian, a national team member means international connections, recruiting, just everything he brings to the table. He's one of those guys that has all the bases covered and we're really fortunate that he's going to be coming aboard and helping move our program into the Big Ten."

The Arizona State graduate has well over a decade's worth of international experience and an abundance of collegiate coaching experience. Beginning in 1992, Eiter represented the United States in nine international competitions including an eighth-place finish at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

Including his participation on the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team, Eiter represented the United States in nine elite-level international competitions. He also competed in the 1993 and 1995 World Championships. Eiter was a five-time U.S. Open national champion and won two silver medals at the World Cup.

His success on the mat translated into a decorated international coaching career. Eiter guided the 1999 United States women's team to a first-place finish at the world championships, marking the first and only time a U.S. women's team has won a world team title. In addition, Eiter's 2007 and 2008 U.S. Junior Women's World Championship team picked up seven medals, including two gold medals.

"There are only a few teams in the country that have multiple Olympians on their staff, we are now one of them," said McCoy. "What he brings with his international coaching experience and his international experience as an athlete really just pulls everything together and keeps us on that top tier as far as a coaching staff."

During his head coaching tenure at Penn, Eiter coached four All-Americans, highlighted by Lorenzo Thomas' sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships last season at 184.

Scott Giffin was Eiter's first All-American as head coach of the Quakers. Giffin finished seventh at the 2010 NCAA Championships. In 2011, Zack Kemmerer wrestled to an eighth-place finish at 141 pounds, becoming Penn's first-ever All-American at that weight.

The following season, Micah Burak finished seventh at 197, while in 2014 Thomas became Eiter's highest-placing All-American with a sixth-place finish at 184 pounds, Penn's first-ever All-American at 184.

Off the mat, Eiter had three wrestlers named National Wrestling Coaching Association (NWCA) All-Academic. Mark Rappo and Gabriel Burak both earned the honor in 2011, and Erich Smith earned a spot in 2012. As a team, Penn was honored by the NWCA as an All-Academic squad.

As a head coach, Eiter instructed two Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) champions as well as coached seven All-Ivy selections including two wrestlers who were named Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Kyle Cowan (2011) and Thomas (2012). In addition, Eiter sent at least six wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in four of his six seasons.

In his nine seasons at Penn as head coach and an assistant, Eiter worked with 34 NCAA qualifiers, including 2007 national champion Matt Valenti, 42 EIWA place winners and seven EIWA champions.

Prior to his time with the Quakers, Eiter served as an assistant at Northwestern for four seasons (2002-06) after working as a volunteer assistant with the Wildcats from 1997-2002. While in Evanston, he served as the lead recruiter, and in 2003 the Wildcats brought in the nation's seventh-best recruiting class.

In 2005, he helped guide the Wildcats to a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, their best finish in 15 years. That season, Eiter coached one All-American and four wrestlers to the Round of 12 at the NCAA Championships. Freshman Jake Herbert finished third in the country and won Northwestern's first Midlands' title in 36 years.

From 1993-97, Eiter coached at Clarion (Pa.) University as an assistant. He served as recruiting and scheduling coordinator in addition to his role as conductor of the Golden Eagles Summer Wrestling Camp.

Eiter is a 1991 graduate of Arizona State University.

Brown Wrestling Announces 2014-15 Schedule

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown University wrestling opens its season at the East Stroudsburg Open on Nov. 16, travels to locales across the country, and hosts five dual meets in 2014-15, second-year head coach Todd Beckerman announced on Thursday.

"We are really excited for our schedule this year. Not only will it prepare our team for the EIWA conference and NCAA Championships in March, but our schedule brings us to cities where we have a strong alumni and fan base," Beckerman said. "This will enable many of our followers and alumni to catch matches across the country - from Las Vegas and California to Chicago and cities up and down the East Coast."

After the intra-squad Brown & White Wrestle-Offs on Nov. 8, the team begins intercollegiate competition at the East Stroudsburg Open prior to the Navy Classic on Nov. 22, the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., from Dec. 5-6, the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., from Dec. 29-30, and the Franklin & Marshall Open on Jan. 3.

The Bears start the dual meet portion of their schedule on Jan. 10 as Brown travels to Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield. The squad continues play in California the next day with competition against Menlo College and Stanford.

Brown hosts its first meet of the season on Jan. 17 when the Bears welcome Cornell to the Pizzitola Sports Center. The event begins a four-meet home stretch for the Bears.

"We have some great events planned for our strong alumni and fan base to attend at home in Providence," Beckerman said. "We will host the inaugural 'Beauty and the Beast' Event - where we will compete alongside a gymnastics meet in the Pizzitola Center - during our Alumni and Family Weekend in January, which will add a fun and exciting element to both sports."

During the program's Alumni Weekend, the Bears will host Sacred Heart on Jan. 24 for the "Beauty and the Beast" Event and entertain Bucknell the next night. Brown concludes its home stand with a meet against Binghamton on Jan. 31 for the team's Armed Forces and Teacher Appreciation Day.

Brown then competes in five meets away from home with competition against Penn and Princeton on Feb. 7, Lehigh on Feb. 8, and Harvard and Johnson & Wales on Feb. 14.

The team concludes the regular season with a home meet against Columbia on Feb. 21 where the program will honor its graduating student-athletes on Senior Day.

"We will finish the season off with Senior Day against Ivy foe Columbia," Beckerman said. "This will be one last time to celebrate our seniors at home before we begin the postseason competition."

The Bears will look to find success in the postseason at both the EIWA Championships which run from March 6-7 in Bethlehem, Pa., and the NCAA Championships which will take place from March 19-21 in St. Louis, Mo.
