MADISON, Wis. — The early signing period proved to be successful for the Wisconsin wrestling team, as the program signed Indiana standout Jacob Covaciu and the highly ranked Wick twins, Evan and Zander.

“All three guys fit what we’re looking for,” Wisconsin head coach Barry Davis said. “I think they're each a great addition to our program. The last three years have been good for us. The program is definitely moving forward in the right direction with the right people.”

Jacob Covaciu

Jacob Covaciu, a Merrillville, Indiana, native brings a list of accomplishments with him to Madison next fall. In 2014, he was named a Folkstyle All-American and finished as the Indiana state runner-up at 138 pounds. He continued his success in 2015, finishing as the Indiana state champion at 145 pounds and was awarded 2015 Fargo Jr. Freestyle All-America honors.

The senior is currently ranked as the No. 1 wrestler in the state of Indiana and stands at No. 18 on the Intermat national rankings. He is projected to compete in either the 157- or 165-pound weight class for Wisconsin and plans to major in kinesiology/pre-med.

Davis on Covaciu: “Jacob Covaciu from Indiana won a state title last year. I think he’s got great upside to him. He comes from a great work ethic as well. He’s got goals on the mat as well as off the mat. He wants to go to medical school. The leadership’s there, the work ethic’s there, the dedication’s there.”

Evan Wick

Evan Wick signed to officially join the Badgers’ 2016 signing class with his twin brother Zander.

Evan Wick is a standout competitor who will add to the Badgers list of accolades. The San Gabriel, California, native was a two-time California state place winner, a 2015 Western Regionals champion and a 2015 Jr. Freestyle runner-up.

Currently, Evan is ranked third in the nation at 152 pounds by FLOWrestling. He is expected to compete in the 165-pound weight class for the Badgers and plans on majoring in business.

Zander Wick

Zander Wick boasts an impressive resume as well. The San Gabriel, California, native was named the 2013 Folkstyle National Champion. In 2015, he finished as the California state runner-up, grabbed a Jr. Freestyle All-America honor and claimed the 2015 Freakshow Champion title.

Currently, Zander is ranked third in the nation at 145 pounds by FLOWrestling. He is expected to compete in the 149- or 157-pound weight class for Wisconsin and plans on majoring in business.

Davis on Wick twins: “We got a great brother combination and that’s a great thing. They have different styles. Evan is taller than Zander—he’s somewhat compact—but they bring a very intense style and a very offensive style of wrestling. I think they’ll make guys around them better. They bring the full package with character, leadership, good students, as well as what they bring to the mat. They each have a great work ethic too, so it’ll be great to have them.”

Wed, November 18, 2015
PHILADELPHIA – The 2015 Keystone Classic is this Sunday in The Palestra, with 13 teams competing in a premier early-season wrestling tournament.

In addition to the host University of Pennsylvania program, No. 21 (Tournament Rankings) Northwestern, Indiana, Pittsburgh, Drexel, Rider, Bloomsburg, Harvard, Franklin & Marshall, Eastern Michigan, Appalachian State, VMI, and Sacred Heart will compete in the tournament.

Last year, four teams competing at this season’s Keystone Classic finished in the Top-30 at NCAAs – Northwestern (No. 15), Pitt (No. 21), Indiana (No. 24), and Rider (No. 27).

Leading up the tournament, PennAthletics.com will preview each weight class and highlight key entrants expected to compete for the title. Today, we look at 149, 157, 165, and 174 pounds.

149: The premier weight in the tournament, there are three Top-10 wrestlers likely to be entered this weekend. Leading the pack is No. 1 Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern. The 2014 NCAA champion, Tsirtsis was third last year at NCAAs. Along the way, he twice defeated No. 10 B.J. Clagon (Rider) by 2-1 decision – the second meeting in the consolation semifinals after Clagon had secured his own All-American honors. The home team will have a say in the matter with No. 8 C.J. Cobb. The champion at the Bearcat Open to begin the season, Cobb was a Round of 12 finisher last year at NCAAs – falling to Clagon in a 5-3 decision. Drexel is assuredly in the mix as well, with No. 16 Matt Cimato – also a NCAA qualifier last season – rounding out a stellar top four. If you’re looking for someone to come from off the pace, VMI’s Stevan Smith has a third-place finish at the Hokie Open to his credit early in the season.

157: While there are no returning All-Americans at this weight, Penn’s Brooks Martino and Rider’s Chad Walsh are two returning NCAA qualifiers who are in contention for the title this weekend. Martino placed sixth at EIWAs last season, while Walsh was EWL champion. Northwestern’s Bryce Brill could be a factor as well. He was 4-0 last season before suffering a season-ending injury. He hasn’t competed yet this season, but if he is good to go on Sunday Brill can surely make a run. VMI again has a wrestler coming off a good result at the Hokie Open in Neal Richards who finished second.

165: What was a deep weight at last year’s Keystone Classic is a bit more wide open this time around with the graduation of stalwarts at Indiana and Northwestern. However, as one would expect, those two Big Ten programs have reloaded. Northwestern is expected to enter No. 15 Johnny Sebastien. The Ramsey, N.J. (Bergen Catholic) product went 23-3 last year as a redshirt at 174 pounds. He hasn’t competed yet this season, but if entered gives the Wildcats a shot at the title. Indiana’s Devin Skatzka has finished second at the EMU Open and fifth at the MSU Open to begin his collegiate career. Rider is also a factor with two-time NCAA qualifier No. 14 Connor Brennan. He his 3-0 to start the season. Penn’s will enter Ray Bethea, who was sixth last year at EIWAs and has won his only two matches of 2015-16. VMI’s Shabaka Johns was third at the Hokie Open and took second at the SoCon Championships last season. Appalachian State’s Forrest Pryzbysz was third at the MSU Open this past week, making a second SoCon factor.

174: Indiana’s Nate Jackson enters the week ranked No. 12 by InterMat and is the likely No. 1 seed at the tournament. He went 3-2 last year at NCAAs and is the defending Keystone Classic champion. Appalachian State’s Nick Kees is ranked No. 15 this week, and is coming off a fifth place finish at the MSU Open. The home team will bring Casey Kent to the field. After a year off with injury, Kent is looking to build on a NCAA Championships berth at 165 pounds in 2013-14. He was 3-1 at the Bearcat Open, reaching the semifinals. Other wrestlers to keep an eye on are Pittsburgh’s Te’Shan Campbell – a PIAA state champion last year at 170 pounds, and Sacred Heart’s Conan Shuster who took sixth last year at EIWAs.

Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday in The Palestra. Tickets are on sale now, and are $10 in advance of the tournament and $15 at the door. Live streaming of the tournament will begin at 5 p.m. on Sunday on the Ivy League Digital Network and continue through the championship finals which are expected to begin at 6 p.m.

Seven #TigerStyle wrestlers ranked in preseason weight class rankings

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Last season, Mizzou Wrestling captured its third consecutive Mid-American Conference title, one for each season Mizzou has been a member of the conference. On Wednesday, the conference office announced its preseason rankings with Mizzouagain sitting atop the poll with 20.0 points. #TigerStyle wrestlers were represented in seven of the 10 individual weight class rankings, with junior 133-pounder Zach Synon (Cary, Ill.) and junior 197-pounder J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) leading the way at the top of their respective weight classes.

The league’s head coaches voted on the team and individual rankings (full rankings below). Schools and wrestlers were ranked based on the number of first through fourth-place votes. A first-place vote was worth four points, second-place vote earned three points, third-place votes earned two points, and fourth-place votes earned one point.

Both Synon and Cox will enter the 2015-16 season as defending champions, winning last season’s MAC Tournament Championship. Cox also placed fifth at the NCAA Championships. In total, Mizzou will have four returning All-Americans this season. In addition to Synon and Cox, redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) and redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa) captured MAC Championships and advanced to the NCAA Championships a season ago. Mayes and Miklus each finished seventh at NCAAs. Both Mayes and Miklus were ranked second in the preseason rankings in their respective weight classes.

Three other Tigers were ranked in the preseason individual rankings. Redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Barlow McGhee (Rock Island, Ill.) was selected to finish fourth by the conference. McGhee wrestled in five tournaments a season ago while taking his redshirt season, earning a record of 14-5 and a championship at the Roger Denker Open. Redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) was selected third in the preseason rankings. Lewis had a very impressive redshirt campaign in 2014-15, posting a record of 21-8 with an astonishing 15 wins by way of pin. Virginia transfer redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.) was the second-ranked wrestler in preseason rankings. Last season, Butler posted a 21-6 record and 13-2 dual record as a Cavalier.

Mizzou will begin the regular season on Friday (Nov. 20) with a dual on the road against SIU-Edwardsville. Match starts at 7 P.M. CT. Mizzou begins its MAC title defense on Saturday, Nov. 28 at Northern Iowa.

GORHAM, Maine – Junior captain Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team has been named the Pilgrim Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week after an outstanding showing at the 2015 East Stroudsburg University Open in East Stroudsburg, Pa.

Competing at the 149-pound weight class, Del Gallo posted a 5-2 record at the event to finish in fourth place at the ESU Open - a tournament comprised of primarily NCAA Division I red-shirt student-athletes. After dropping his opening match, Del Gallo rattled off six straight victories, including three wins by decision over Division I wrestlers to earn a spot on the podium. Wrestling his way into the podium bouts, Del Gallo was able to avenge his opening-match loss to Kent Lane of Lehigh with a hard-won 6-5 decision. Lane had defeated Del Gallo by technical fall earlier in the tournament. In the third place contest, Del Gallo was narrowly defeated 5-4 by Shane Jones of Old Dominion University.

Del Gallo, a 2015 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament qualifier and All-Region wrestler, is 7-2 early in the 2015-2016 season. He has two wins by fall, and three wins by decision.

Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College.

Today, we close the weight-by-weight previews with 184, 197, and 285 pounds.

184: The home team should be the front-runner at this weight, led by No. 11 Lorenzo Thomas. A 2014 All-American, Thomas is a two-time NCAA qualifier and has made two runs to the final at the Keystone Classic during his career – winning the title in 2013. In his first tournament of the season, he reached the finals at the Bearcat Open, losing to No. 1 Gabe Dean. Eastern Michigan’s Kayne McCollom is the top challenger to Thomas, coming off a second-place finish at the EMU Open.

197: Eastern Michigan’s Anthony Abro is ranked No. 11 this week by InterMat and is a former NCAA qualifier. Those qualifications will likely make him the top seed. Pitt’s Nick Bonaccorsi is a two-time NCAA qualifier, and will factor into the final result. Penn’s Frank Mattiace is a bit of an unknown after a year off from competition, but he is featured in a few national rankings and could re-announce his presence with a win on home mats. Rider’s Ryan Woulfe has bumped up from 174 pounds where he was a NCAA qualifier.

285: No. 12 Denzel Dejournette is the defending Keystone Classic champion for Appalachian State, and is coming off a 2014-15 season where he was the SoCon champion and a NCAA qualifier. This year, he already has a championship at the MSU Open to his credit. Pitt’s Ryan Solomon is ranked No. 19 this week, and is a NCAA qualifier who went 2-2 at NCAAs last year. Northwestern has a long tradition to top-notch heavyweights – look no further than current Penn assistant coach Mike McMullan. The Wildcats look to have another top big man on their squad in Zack Chakonis. The 2015 New Jersey state champion was the top-ranked heavyweight in the country last year according to Intermat.

Pitt Heads East to No. 10 Lehigh, Keystone Classic

Panthers and Mountain Hawks clash for 60th time

Match Notes | Lehigh: Watch LiveListen Live | Keystone Classic: Watch Live ($)

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt wrestling team (3-0) returns to the mat Friday, Nov. 20, as the squad travels to No. 10 Lehigh (2-1) for a 7 p.m. dual at the Leeman-Turner Arena. The Panthers will conclude the weekend trip at the Keystone Classic hosted by Penn Sunday, Nov. 22, at the historic “cathedral of basketball”, The Palestra.

Pitt and the Mountain Hawks will meet for the 60th time in program history. The teams first met in the early stages of the programs’ existences, 1916. Since then, Lehigh has claimed 40 duals, while Pitt has taken 17 and tied two. The Mountain Hawks and Panthers last met in 2013 in Bethlehem, Pa., where Pitt won the dual 16-15.

On Sunday, the Panthers will compete in the annual Keystone Classic on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. Pitt has competed well at the Classic as there have been individual champions in the past two seasons. Recent graduate Max Thomusseit and current sophomore Dom Forys both claimed their weight classes respectively a year ago.

LAST TIME OUT

In their opening weekend at the Terrapin Duals, the Panthers left College Park, Md., with three dual victories under their belt. Pitt dominated its first opponent of the day, defeating Kutztown 46-6 and followed that with a hard-fought 16-15 win over host-team Maryland. The Panthers concluded the Duals with a 41-0 victory over West Liberty.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN HAWKS

Ranked No. 10 in the latest USA Today/NWCA Coaches poll, Lehigh owns an overall record of 2-1 after starting the season off with a 23-12 win over Patriot League foe Bucknell. That was followed by splitting with Big East teams No. 16 Minnesota and No. 10 Nebraska. The Mountain Hawks claimed the first dual, 22-12, but fell to the Corn Huskers, 24-6.

Lehigh returns 2015 NCAA runner-up Nathaniel Brown at 184 pounds. Brown is currently ranked No. 8 by InterMat and claims a 7-2 dual record thus far. Six other Mountain Hawks were ranked by InterMat this week, including Mitch Minotti at No. 7 in the 157 weight class.

ZANETTA REMAINS UNDEFEATED

Last weekend, several Panthers competed at the East Stroudsburg Open including redshirt sophomore Nick Zanetta. The Pittsburgh native entered the weekend with two wins from the Terrapin Duals, and continued his winning ways as he battled his way to first place in the 141 weight class, improving his overall record to 7-0. After winning his first two matches by way of technical fall and major decision, respectively, Zanetta pinned this third opponent, Jack Lucie of Army West Point, in 19 seconds. He dominated his final two opponents, winning both matches in a major decision.

JACOBSON PLACES AT ESU OPEN

In addition to redshirt sophomore Nick Zanetta claiming first place in his weight class at the East Stroudsburg Open, freshman Cam Jacobson finished fifth in the 174 weight class. Jacobson owns an overall record of 6-4 after winning his first three matches at ESU. Zanetta and Jacobson’s finishes marks the Panthers fourth top-five finish at a tournament this season.

SOLOMON IN THE POLLS

Redshirt sophomore Ryan Solomon (285) continues to find himself among the top 25 in the weekly polls after his 7-5 decision over Maryland’s Dawson Peck lifted the Panthers to a 16-15 team victory. This week Solomon comes in at No. 19 by Intermat and TheOpenMat, and moved up in the rankings to 13th by FloWrestling.

SEASON OUTLOOK

The Panthers look to build upon their historical and successful program that has been in existence since 1914. Pitt finished the 2014-15 season 21st at NCAAs was highlighted by a runner-up finish from then-senior Tyler Wilps at 174 pounds. Although losing Wilps to graduation, the Panthers added the decorated Pittsburgh native to the coaching staff this season as the volunteer assistant coach.

Pitt returns three NCAA qualifiers from 2014-15 and two more from the year prior. Headlining the returners is 141 pound ACC Champion Mikey Racciato who enters the season with bountiful experience as the junior claims a 44-25 career record and is a two-time NCAA qualifier. Sophomore Dom Forys is expected to be a major threat on the mat at 133 pounds after a successful freshman campaign. Rounding out last year’s national qualifiers is redshirt sophomore Ryan Solomon who will compete in the 197/285 classes. In his first full season as a Panther, Solomon earned an automatic bid to nationals after a runner-up finish at ACC’s. Redshirt seniors Nick Bonaccorsi and Ronnie Garbinsky headline the upperclassmen returners as both wrestlers qualified for NCAA’s in 2014.

2015-16 SLATE AT A GLANCE

Pitt is set to face eight teams ranked in the top-25 USA Today/NWCA Coaches preseason poll. As announced on Oct. 27, Oklahoma State came in at the No. 1 spot and will visit Pittsburgh on Jan. 17. The Panthers next opponent, Lehigh, ranks seventh after finishing 13th at nationals last year. Three ACC schools were represented in the top-25 (Virginia Tech [6], NC State [12], and North Carolina [14]) while two other conference teams received votes, including Pitt and Virginia.

SEASON AND MATCH TICKETS NOW ON SALE

Watch the Panthers as they begin the long road to Madison Square Garden. Pitt will compete at the Fitzgerald Field House seven times throughout the 2015-16 campaign and will host some of the top teams in the country. Wrestling edged by No. 22 Wilkes
11/20/2015 | Wrestling
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College grapplers are on the cusp of a breakthrough win. It nearly came Friday night at No. 22 Wilkes, where the Blue Jays held a lead and were down only one going into the heavyweight bout. The Colonels, featuring four nationally-ranked wrestlers, got a decision in the decisive match to escape with a 21-17 win in their home gym.

Wilkes' one-two punch at 125 and 133 lifted the hosts to a 9-0 lead. Michael Fleck, ranked No. 8 by the NWCA and No. 4 by d3wrestle.com, bested sophomore Philip Torresani, 11-4, in the opener, before defending national champion and top-ranked Matthew Grossman earned a fall in just 24 seconds.

The Blue Jays (2-3) bounced back in a big way, winning four consecutive weight classes to go in front 14-9.

Once again, the Lammer brothers were in good form, starting off the run with back-to-back decisions. Mike Lammer dealt d3wrestle honorable mention Pankil Chander an 11-6 loss in their 141-pound matchup and Chad Lammer upset NWCA No. 8 Josh Evans 7-5 in overtime at 149.

Adam Smith improved to 7-2 on the season with a 21-5 technical fall over Cory Fleming at 157, as the Blue Jays went in front 11-9. Chris Kummerer added to the lead with a 7-2 decision over Matthew Judge at 165.

Wilkes (2-2), which has been ranked as high as fifth this season, got a crucial pin from James Ilvento at 174 to retake the lead, 15-14. Fifth-ranked Kyle Diesel followed with a hard-fought 6-0 win over Blue Jay sophomore Rocco Hladney.

Luke Fernandez would pull Elizabethtown back within one with his 6-2 decision over Nicholas Lawson in the 197 bout, a battle of wrestlers receiving honorable mention status from d3wrestle.com.

Eric Eckstein put in a valiant effort at 285, but Wilkes' Alex Pullen, also a d3wrestle.com honorable mention pick, scratched out a 9-5 decision to deny E-town its first win against the Colonels since 2010-11. The Blue Jays have shown positives in both of their matches against ranked teams this season (No. 15 New York U. and No. 22 Wilkes) and Friday night they split wins with the Colonels evenly.

In the only exhibition of the night, E-town freshman Nikolay Savin pinned Zachary Faust in 7:00.

Friday's match completed the dual portion of the schedule for the fall semester. The Blue Jays will compete once more, Saturday, Dec. 5, at the York (Pa.) COLUMBUS, Ohio – A string of three straight bonus point wins was more than enough for the fifth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team (2-0) on Friday night, as it rolled to a 28-9 victory over Arizona State (4-3) at St. John Arena. The wins were highlighted by major decisions from top-ranked Nathan Tomasello (125) and 19th-ranked Micah Jordan (141) as well as a dominating 16-0 tech fall by fifth-ranked Johnni DiJulius (133).

Micah’s brother, Bo, the top ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, needed just 1:54 to pin ASU’s Zachary Smith in the second match of the evening to give Ohio State a 6-3 lead in the team score, an advantage they never relinquished.

Redshirt freshman Jake Ryan, who won a close match last week against Virginia’s Andrew Atkinson, again showed his knack for dramatic victories when he closed out the night by getting an escape in overtime and holding on for a 2-1 win against Oliver Pierce in the final match of the night. Ryan is now 8-0 on the season and ranked 20th nationally.

Nick Tavanello also won a nailbitter at 285 pounds, scoring a tiebreaking takedown in the final 10 seconds and then preventing his opponent, Tanner Hall, from escaping as the third period buzzer sounded. Tavanello also stayed undefeated on the year, moving to 7-0.

The dual started at 165 pounds as Arizona State’s Jacen Peterson scored four points in the first period and eventually outlasted Justin Kresevic for a 10-4 decision. The next match, however, saw B. Jordan show why he is ranked No. 1 at 174 pounds, as he scored a takedown, four-point nearfall and then pinned Smith all before the first period was over.

The Sun Devils got three more points at 184 as third-ranked Blake Stauffer, an All-American last year, defeated Jack Rozema by decision, 7-4. Rozema fought back in the third period after trailing 5-1, getting an escape and takedown to cut the deficit to 5-4 before a Stauffer escape and bonus point for riding time.

After intermission, Ohio State ran off three straight dominating victories, keyed by DiJulius’ 16-0 tech fall over Cord Coronado. The redshirt senior, now with 103 career wins, scored 12 points in the first period on two takedowns and two four-point near-falls. Tomasello and M. Jordan were equally as impressive, defeating their opponents by a combined score of 33-12. Tomasello scored six takedowns in his match while M. Jordan had eight in his. The trio of Tomasello-DiJulius-M. Jordan is now a perfect 16-0 this season.

Senior Mark Martin made his dual meet debut and scored four first-period points and then held on for a 8-5 decision against Josh DaSilveira. Martin, who scored a bonus point with well over two minutes of riding time, is 11-1 on the season.

Ohio State returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24 when it makes the trip up I-71 to take on Cleveland State beginning at 7 p.m. at Woodling Gym on the campus of CSU.

POSTMATCH QUOTES

Head coach Tom Ryan

On the match

“I think pursuing your opponent is the best way to win wrestling matches, and our guys who did that tonight were successful. We need to continue to develop that instinct to attack, be aggressive and score as many points as possible. Overall it was a good win for us.”

On the mentality of close matches

“As you watch you see how hard the sport is. You look for and create situations in practice where you’re competing. I just think it’s a relentless and unwillingness to lose with our crowd pushing them along.”

Nathan Tomasello, redshirt sophomore

On his match

“I just let it fly and went after it. I think I wrestled a lot better than I did last week. The effort level was a lot better. I’m still working on improving on different things but I put a lot of points on the board and it was overall a good match.”

On watching his teammates close matches

“It starts in the practice room. If you push real hard in the practice room it simulates what you are going to feel when you go out there. We have been going through a lot of hard, live practices. I just know when I’m watching I’m excited because I was in the shoes of those younger guys last year.”

Bo Jordan, redshirt sophomore

On aggressive approach

“I want to focus on the things I can control, which is my effort level and mental approach. I go into every match expecting it to be tough and worry less about the score and more about what I have to do to be successful. ”

On assessing his season performance thus far

“I asses how I’m doing with my effort level. It’s hard to assess where you are at with wins and losses and how many points you’ve scored. I really just try to assess my whole effort throughout the match. If I have a lot of effort, that’s great.”

Panthers Fall 27-7 to No. 10 Lehigh

Pitt resumes action on Sunday at Keystone Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Pitt wrestling team (3-1) suffered its first dual loss of the season to No. 10 Lehigh (3-1) Friday night at Grace Hall.

“I thought we had a lot of good, tight battles,” head coach Jason Peters said. “We didn’t step up when we needed to at the important times of the match. For the team we put out there, the group did well, but we need to do better late in matches. I hope our guys learned for the experience tonight, it was a great environment and something for us to build on. We’re going to get back to work tomorrow and get ready for Sunday.”

Sophomore Dom Forys and junior Mikey Racciato were the lone Panthers to win their bouts.

Lehigh took the first lead of the night at 125 as No. 14 Darian Cruz defeated freshman LJ Bentley in 14-5 major decision, giving the Mountain Hawks a 4-0 lead.

Forys then came out with a dominating 22-10 major decision over Lehigh’s Jon Mele at 133, tying the team score 4-4. Forys tallied seven total takedowns, two reversals, scored two near fall points and escaped once.

In a battle of hometown heroes, Racciato -- a native of Pen Argyl, Pa. – took on No. 8 Randy Cruz of Bethlehem, Pa. Racciato struck first with an early takedown in the first period. Cruz escaped before the first period buzzer, bringing the score to 2-1 in favor of Pitt. Racciato escaped in the second period and Cruz escaped in the third but it wouldn’t be enough as Racciato came out victorious. The Panthers led the dual 7-4 entering the 149 bout.

Pitt couldn’t fight back in the remaining matches.

The Panthers continue their eastern Pennsylvania tour on Sunday, Nov. 22, at the Keystone Classic hosted by Penn.

Boilermakers Pin Past Bloomsburg 37-12

Purdue puts 30-plus points on the board for a third time in 2015

#BoilerNotes
• Purdue has put 30-or more points on the board in 3 of its 4 duals … Boilermakers claimed 8 of 10 weights vs. Bloomsburg with four pins and one major decision … decisions came at 149, 157 and 285.

• Redshirt freshman Ben Thornton recorded the first major decision of his career.

• Chad Welch’s pin was the 13th of his career, which is tops on the team … moved to 4-0 in duals, with all four wins resulting in bonus points (2 F, 1 TF, 1 MD).

• Career falls No. 8 for Jacob Morrissey, No. 7 for Danny Sabatello and No. 4 for Tanner Lynde.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Powered behind five bonus point victories, the Purdue wrestling team pinned its way past Bloomsburg 37-12 on Friday inside Nelson Field House, lifting the Boilermakers’ record to 4-1. Purdue won 8 of 10 weights with falls coming at 133, 165, 174 and 184.

“It’s was fun getting four pins tonight,” head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. “The pin is the ultimate victory in wrestling. We had them on their back and we finished the deal.

“I thought overall we wrestled pretty well and took advantage of wrestling from our positions for the most part,” Ersland said. “The two matches we lost, they took advantage of us being out of positions, which shows we have things to work on, but overall I like the aggressiveness of our team. I want to see an aggressive and fired up team for both of our duals Saturday.”

Ben Thornton tallied five takedowns on his way to the first major decision of his career, a 16-4 route of Jon Haas in the dual’s first bout. The redshirt freshman also earned a four-count in the first period as the 125-pounder improved to 7-2.

The pace of the dual was quick with all four of Purdue’s pins coming before the end of the second period. No. 20 Danny Sabatello (6-3) raced out to an 8-3 lead before sticking Adam Barrick in 2:12. The redshirt senior moved to 6-3 at 141 pounds with his second pin of the season.

Chad Welch (8-1) started a string of three-consecutive pins for the Boilermakers. The fall came at 4:44 off a cement mixer, the third of the redshirt senior’s season. In the ensuing match at 174, Jacob Morrissey built a 6-0 before getting Kyle Wojtaszek’s shoulders down nearing the edge of the mat in 2:43 for the fifth win of his redshirt sophomore campaign.

Tanner Lynde completed the hat trick with a 3:43 stick of Casey Glunt at 184. Two of his three dual matches this season have been won with quick pins.

Purdue received decisions from Kyle Ayersman (149), No. 14 Doug Welch (157) and Tyler Kral (285). Both of Bloomsburg’s wins came by fall, winning at 133 and 197

It is a quick turnaround for the Boilermakers as they trek to Lock Haven for a pair of duals Saturday, taking on NCAA Division II Shippensburg at 11 a.m. ET and the Bald Eagles at 12:30 p.m. inside Thomas Fieldhouse.

#BoilerNotes
• Purdue’s combined dual score Saturday was 65-13 … the Boilermakers went 17-3 with seven different wrestlers turning in wins with bonus points (3 MD, 1 TF, 2 F, 1 forfeit) … No. 14 Doug Welch was credited with two bonus point wins (1 MD, 1 F).

• The Boilermakers have put 30-or more points on the board in five of their first six duals this season … the 2006-07 season saw Purdue score 30+ in five duals during the season … the season with the most duals where the Boilermakers scored 30+ was in 2002-03 with 10.

• Redshirt freshmen Peter Andreotti (165), Blake Reid (174) and Jacob Aven (285) all won with bonus points in their dual debuts … the Boilermakers have now used four different lineups in six duals wrestled.

• Eight was the magic number for four Purdue wrestlers … D. Welch had his eighth career major decision and eighth career fall … Alex Griffin had his eighth career major decision … Jacob Morrissey had his eighth career fall.

• It was the first-ever meeting with NCAA Division II Shippensburg … the Raiders are the 148th all-time opponent in program history.

• Purdue won in Lock Haven for the third time in the series’ history … the last win in Lock Haven came in 1958.

Tony Ersland is now 15-9 as the head coach of the Boilermakers.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – A trio of Purdue redshirt freshmen made an impact in their first career dual starts by registering two major decisions and a technical fall, highlighting a 34-4 win over NCAA Division II Shippensburg (1-2) on Saturday in Thomas Fieldhouse. The Boilermakers then won seven straight bouts on their way to beating Lock Haven (1-4) 31-9. With the two dual victories, Purdue pushed its record to 5-1.

“It’s always exciting when the guys that had to wait a year to compete because of reshirting, for them to win is a special thing,” head wrestling coach Tony Ersland said. “I remember my first win out of redshirt and I am sure they will remember it too.

“They scored points, like we talk about as a team,” Ersland said. “Not only did they win, but they scored points, as we always emphasize.”

Peter Andreotti made the most of his first dual start at 165 pounds, scoring a 17-2 technical fall in 7:00 on Shippensburg’s Mark Lentz. The redshirt freshman used a first-period takedown to tilt Lentz for a pair of two-point nearfalls, building a 6-0 lead. From bottom in the second, he earned more back points, a two- and a four-point nearfall to push his lead to 12-2. A second takedown was scored in the third after an escape thanks to Lentz choosing to start on top. His final point came thanks to 1:02 riding time as he moved to 6-4 on the season.

In the ensuing match at 174, Blake Reid took Hunter Fenk down six times, reversed him and got a two-count in the second and capped it off with 2:02 on his way to a 17-7 major decision. All seven of the Raiders’ points came via escape. The win was the third of Reid’s rookie campaign.

Jacob Aven closed out the dual with a 9-1 major decision vs. Derek Earnst. The redshirt freshman 285-pounder tallied a takedown in each period and earned a pair of penalty points thanks to Earnst’s three stalling calls. The win lifted Aven’s record to 5-3.

Purdue’s double winners on the day included Ben Thornton (125), Luke Welch (133), Danny Sabatello (141), Alex Griffin (149) and Doug Welch (157), who posted a pair of bonus point wins.

“Consistency is what we’re looking for,” Ersland said of his lower weights. “We had more consistency today and we hope to build on that.”

At 157 pounds, 14th-ranked D. Welch provided a major decision and a fall. He scored a 9-0 major decision of Shippensburg’s Adam Martz. It was a 1-0 match for D. Welch heading into the third period where he escaped and put a six-point move on the Raider. He added another point by riding Martz for 2:54 for the eighth major decision of his career. He then built an 11-0 lead on Aaron McKinney of Lock Haven before pinning him in 6:16, also the eighth of his career. The two wins lifted his season mark to 5-1.

Against Lock Haven, Griffin captured his eighth major decision with a 10-1 showing against Cody Wheeler at 149. After a scoreless first, the redshirt junior earned a four-count and scored five points in the third period to remain undefeated at 4-0.

In the only matchup between ranked wrestlers, 20th-ranked Sabatello prevailed in the second sudden victory with No. 17 Dan Neff of Lock Haven 12-10. The redshirt senior scored the winning takedown 19 seconds into the second 60-second winner-take-all session, lifting his record to 8-3.

“Danny rose to the occasion and won a hard fought match against Neff,” Ersland said. “He had to fright really hard, but he closed it out and got the win.”

At 174, Jacob Morrissey won his second match in as many days by fall, needing just 2:12 seconds to stick Lock Haven’s Tyler Wood. The pin is the third of his redshirt sophomore season and the eighth of his career.

The Boilermakers will be off from competition the week of Thanksgiving, returning to the mat at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The two-day tournament runs from Dec. 4 to 5.

Wrestling Falls to No. 8 Cornell on the Road, 37-3

ITHACA, N.Y. - Drexel Wrestling fell on the road Saturday to No. 8 Cornell, 37-3. The Big Red had five wrestlers competing who were ranked in the top 20 in the nation, three of which were ranked No. 4 or higher. Matthew Cimato continued the strong start to his year, beating Cornell's Joe Galasso in the 149 match, 6-0.

Cornell got on the board first as No. 17 Dalton Macri edged Zack Fuentes at 125 by a score of 3-2. The fourth-ranked Nahshon Garrett earned a technical fall over Franco Ferraina at 133 to put the Big Red ahead, 8-0 and then Cornell's William Koll earned a major decision in the 141 match to extend the lead to 12-0. Cimato, who is ranked 16th in the nation at 149, was the lone Dragon to score points on the dual. With his 6-0 decision at 149, the redshirt junior improved to 10-1 overall and leads the Dragons with a perfect 5-0 record in dual meets.

The latter half of the dual proved tough for the Dragons, as they had to face three wrestlers ranked in the top 10 consecutively at 165, 174 and 184. Although sophomore Joey Goodhart almost pulled out a win in the heavyweight match, he ultimately dropped a 4-3 loss to Cornell's Jeramy Sweany which marked the Big Red's sixth win in a row to close out the match on the way to a 37-3 victory over Drexel.

With the loss, the Dragons move to 2-3 in dual action and 0-1 against EIWA opponents. Cornell, who opened its dual meet season on Saturday, improves to 1-0.

Dragons return to Philadelphia for the Keystone Classic on Sunday at Penn. Competition is set to begin at 9 a.m.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Jake Ryan’s technical fall at 157 pounds, the final match of the night, proved to the difference as Ohio State outlasted Cleveland State, 26-18, on Tuesday evening at Woodling Gymnasium. With the win, the third-ranked Buckeyes are now 3-0 on the season.

Ryan, who rose four spots this week in the InterMat rankings from No. 20 to No. 16, scored early and often in the first period with the dual meet result hanging in the balance. His quick takedown in the first period made it 2-0, and then a four-point near-fall and another take down gave him an 8-1 edge. He led 10-2 at the end of the opening three minutes and never looked back, racking up over a minute of riding time to gain the extra point for a tech fall. Ryan is now 9-0 on the season, with four of those wins coming via bonus points.

The match started at 165 pounds with Solon native Justin Kresevic picking up 10-3 decision over Nathan Wynkoop, thanks in large part to a four-point third period near fall. The win was Kresevic’s fifth of the year. After a scoreless first period, Kresevic got a quick escape in the second and a takedown for a 3-0 lead before taking full control in the final two minutes.

Bo Jordan, ranked No. 1 at 174 pounds, showed why in the next match, as he needed just 28 seconds to pin Gabe Stark. It was Jordan’s second pin in just five matches this year.

Jack Rozema continued the early-dual momentum with a 12-4 major decision over Jacob Worthington at 184 pounds. It was Rozema’s first dual match win of the season and he gained it by breaking open the match in the second period thanks to a scape and two takedowns. He also racked up well over a minute of riding time to get Ohio State a bonus point for the major decision.

After Ohio State forfeited at 197 lbs., the only match of the night that featured two ranked wrestlers went to Cleveland State, as 285-pounder Riley Shaw, ranked No. 8, edged No. 18 Nick Tavanello, 6-4, on the strength of two late escapes. Tavanello had tied the match at 4-4 with a takedown towards the end of the second period, but Shaw escaped twice before the final buzzer sounded in his decision. It was Tavanello’s first loss of the season (7-1).

Nathan Tomasello, wrestling near his hometown of Parma, Ohio, showed by he continues to maintain a stranglehold on the top spot at 125 pounds with a 23-7 tech fall over Evan Cheek. Cheek came strong out of the gates, getting the matches initial takedown, but from there Tomasello wore down Creek with an onslaught of offense that included 22 of the 27 points, including a four-point near-fall.

Johnni DiJulius, also from the Cleveland area (Aurora, Ohio), was tied with CSU’s Alfredo Gray at 3-3 before he scored a one-point escape with 25 seconds left that proved to be the difference. DiJulius led 3-1 into the third period on a first-period takedown and second-period escape.

Cleveland State won the next two matches, at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Mike Carlone’s reversal at the end of the third period gave him a 4-3 win over Mike Hozan while Cody Burcher was pinned by Nick Montgomery 5:34 into the match.

The Buckeyes, which rose two spots in this week’s USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll from No. 5 to No. 3 and also picked up a first place vote, are off until Dec. 4-5 when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for the CKLV Invitational.

Butler and Miklus Vault @MizzouWrestling to 24-19 Win Over UNI

#TigerStyle win gives Mizzou its 30th straight dual competition win

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Two falls from redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.) and redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa) gave No. 9 Mizzou Wrestling the lead it needed to defeat No. 25 Northern Iowa on Saturday by a score of 24-19. Heading into the 174-pound match, the Tigers trailed the Panthers 14-9, but the two pins gave Mizzou a 21-14 lead, one it would not relinquish again. The win marked the 30th consecutive dual victory for the Tigers.

Redshirt junior 133-pounder Zach Synon (Cary, Ill.) picked up the first win of the night for Mizzou, besting Josh Alber by a score a 2-1. The match was 1-1 as time expired, but Synon was awarded a second point from riding time. The 2-1 decision tied the match score at 3-3. The win started a run for Mizzou, who took the next two matches by way of decision. First, redshirt junior 141-pounder Matt Manley (Perry, Okla.), defeated Trevor Jauch, 4-3. Then, redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) beat Gunnar Wolfensperger by a score of 9-3 to give Mizzou a 9-3 lead in the dual.

After Northern Iowa tied the score, 9-9, with a fall in the 157-pound matchup and grabbed the lead with a technical fall in the 165-pound matchup, 14-9, Butler regained the lead for the Tigers with his pin in the third period (6:37) over Kyle Lux. In his first match as a Tiger after transferring from Virginia, Butler came away with a massive debut win for #Tigerstyle. Butler led 14-4 in the third period when he put both of Lux’s shoulders on the mat for six points.

Miklus followed up the Butler pin with one of his own, pinning Cody Caldwell in the first period (1:22). Wrestling in front of family and friends, Miklus looked up into the stands following the win to acknowledge those who made the short drive to support him.

Junior 197-pounder J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) picked up the final win of the night for #Tigerstyle when he beat Jared Bartel by way of decision, 8-3. The win gave Mizzou three points and clinched the victory.

Mizzou will next send wrestlers to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete in the Las Vegas Invitational Dec. 4. The next dual competition for #Tigerstyle will be the home-opener contest against Ohio State on Friday, Dec. 12.

#9 Missouri vs. #25 UNI

Nov. 28, 2015

Attendance: 2,100 (sold out)

Officials: Curt Frost and Rick Stahl

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI dropped its first dual to No. 9 Missouri, 24-19, in front of a sold-out crowd at home tonight.

“When you have a packed house, you need to put on a show and get those people eager to come back the next time,” said head coach Doug Schwab. “We need to give ourselves some more opportunities.”

UNI falls to 1-3 in duals and 0-1 in the MAC. Missouri stays undefeated with their first MAC win, 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the MAC.

Dylan Peters got the Panthers rolling with a 7-5 decision at 125 pounds to stay undefeated on the season. He beat No. 13 Barlow McGhee, 7-5. Peters, a junior, has started every season with at least 9 wins before his first loss.

Riding time gave Mizzou’s Zach Synon the point he needed to get the 2-1 decision over UNI’s Josh Alber, who just broke into the top-20 rankings.

Mizzou would go on to take the next two before UNI’s Bryce Steiert would tie things up for the Panthers. His 3:32 fall over Luke Fortuna made the team score 9-9. It was the first collegiate fall for the true freshman.

“I loved the pace Steiert wrestled,” said Schwab. “That was three minutes of extreme, break-neck pace, and that’s how you have to crack a guy open.”

No. 3 Cooper Moore made his season debut with a tech fall over Nick DeLoach to push the Panthers up 14-9.

“Some of our guys came out smelling blood, and they went out and got bonus points,” said Schwab.

Mizzou got falls at 174 pounds and 184 pounds.

Jared Bartel was the first to strike at 197 pounds. He had a takedown early in the first period to lead former NCAA champion No. 2 J’Den Cox, but Cox would get the 7-2 decision.

UNI fell too far behind for No. 6 Blaize Cabell to take the lead back, but his tech fall narrowed the gap. He notched 12 takedowns to win 25-10.

“We have to lick our wounds really quick, because you don’t have much time to sit down and hang your head about this,” said Schwab. “We do have to get ready for Las Vegas. It’s a huge event. It’s our last big event before Christmas. We are not going to dwell on this, but this will burn.”

NEXT UP

The Panthers will head out to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite Dec. 4-5. They return home for the UNI Open in the UNI-Dome Dec. 12.

“Next week is a huge opportunity for these guys,” said Schwab. “That’s a big, big event for our guys. It’s a way to make yourself nationally known and put yourself as one of the best guys in the country.”

Hawkeyes Finish Strong, Dominate Iowa State

Second-ranked Iowa wins 12th in a row against Iowa State, 33-6,

AMES, Iowa -- The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated No. 17 Iowa State, 33-6, on Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

The Hawkeyes dominated the top position and overcame a slow start to win for the 12th consecutive time in the series and retain possession of the Dan Gable Traveling Trophy.

The Hawkeyes dominated the home team in the final five bouts, scoring 26 of the final 28 takedowns and closing the dual with five straight wins, including two major decisions and two falls.

Sammy Brooks built a 22-8 lead before turning Dane Pestano at 6:45 for his third fall of the season at 184, and Sam Stoll made his Cy-Hawk debut with a pin in 3:30 against Quean Smith at 285.

Nathan Burak totaled nine takedowns in his 22-8 dismantling of Duke Egli at 197, and Thomas Gilman, typically Iowa’s leadoff man, closed the dual with a 12-3 major decision against Kyle Larson at 125.

That action happened on the heels of a first half that saw Iowa State hold an 8-5 advantage in takedowns. UI head coach Tom Brands said there were no philosophical changes made at the break, but rather the usual narrative.

“You get to the first takedown and you get to the point where your third period is stronger quicker,” Brands said. “That’s where you really start to control matches. We have to use the first period and a good philosophy there is when a guy’s done with the first period he feels like he’s been through an entire match, and that doesn’t happen by just going through the first period.

“You have to work hard and it’s not easy to do. There’s no shortcut to get to guys in the first period. You have to realize it’s hard work and you have to buy into it. The other thing is you don’t stay stagnant either, so you have to give these guys some credit.”

The Hawkeyes wrestled 19 minutes before scoring their first takedown. The dual was tied 3-3 when Brandon Sorensen got to the legs of 15th-ranked Gabe Moreno in the third period at 149. Sorensen piled on three takedowns in the final 1:24 and used two nearfall points to win, 11-3.

It was Iowa’s second of three wins against top 20 wrestlers. Fourth-ranked Alex Meyer scored a pair of takedowns and rode No. 13 Lelund Weatherspoon for three and one-half minutes to win 7-1 at 174, and second-ranked Cory Clark opened the dual with a 9-2 win against No. 7 Earl Hall at 133.

It was Clark’s fifth win in five career meetings with Hall, and this one came without a takedown. Clark trailed 2-0 in the opening minute before scoring the final nine points with a pair of escapes and six nearfall points.

“You have to realize that this is a style that we’re going to see a lot,” said Brands. “Guys are holding points and working hard to stay in the center of the mat, so it’s not something where you can go out there and let your opponent dictate the pace. That was an issue.”

Iowa led 10-6 at intermission behind Clark, Sorensen, and Edwin Cooper, Jr.’s 6-2 win at 157. Iowa State’s only victories were decisions at 141 and 165. Logan Ryan lost 6-1 to Dante Rodriguez, and Patrick Rhoads fell 10-9 to No. 11 Tanner Weatherman at 165.

“It seems like the theme here is we were slow starters for the first five weights, but give these guys credit for outscoring heavy in the third period,” Brands said. “We want to own the third period. We want to own the second period. We want to own the first period. We’re greedy.”

The Hawkeyes return to the mat Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. (CT) when South Dakota State visits Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tickets are available at the UI Athletics Tickets over the phone at 800-IA-HAWKS or online at hawkeyesports.com.

NOTES: Attendance was 5,612... Iowa retains possession of the Dan Gable Trophy... the Hawkeyes have won 12 straight in the series, including the last six meetings since the inception of the traveling trophy... Tom Brands is 11-0 against the Cyclones… Iowa owns a 9-4 advantage in the 2015-16 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

Cowboys Hang on to Edge Gophers, 20-17

With Minnesota and Oklahoma State splitting 10 matches, bonus points made the difference in Sunday’s result

The 21st-ranked Gophers headed to Stillwater this weekend, where No. 3 Oklahoma State waited at Gallagher-Iba Arena to renew what has become one of the nation’s most-celebrated non-conference wrestling rivalries. Minnesota looked tough against the favored Cowboys on Sunday, splitting the meet’s 10 matches and scoring consecutive upsets at 149 and 157 pounds, but bonus points in back-to-back bouts later in the dual made the difference as OSU held on to defeat Minnesota, 20-17. The Gophers are now 4-4 after wrestling a program-record eight duals this November.

The Gophers built a 10-6 lead midway through the dual, powered by a major decision from Sam Brancale at 133 pounds and consecutive upsets from Jake Short and Brandon Kingsley. Short’s 2-1 victory over No. 8 Anthony Collica and Kingsley’s 3-2 decision over No. 14 Chance Marstellar were the first victories over ranked opponents for both wrestlers this season.

In Short’s case, Sunday’s win also marked his first dual match of the season after missing several weeks with an injury suffered at the season-opening Daktronics Open. Coincidentally, injuries played a role in his match with Collica on Sunday. With the score tied at one and less than 30 seconds remaining, Collica had to request injury time for what appeared to be an ankle issue. Following that timeout, Short was awarded his choice of position, giving him the opportunity to score a late escape and take the match.

Following those upsets, Oklahoma State sent its two highest-ranked wrestlers to compete in the next two matches, and both backed up their national rankings with strong performances. First, two-time defending NCAA champion and the nation’s top-ranked 165-pounder, Alex Dieringer, defeated Brandon Krone by technical fall. It was a tough draw for Krone, who was making his career dual debut on Sunday afternoon, becoming the sixth Gopher to do so in the team’s first eight duals this season. In the next contest, No. 3 Kyle Crutchmer turned a big lateral drop into a pin against Jordon Rothers in the closing seconds of the first period. Those results, and the five combined bonus points they produced, turned a 10-6 Gopher lead into a 17-10 deficit, a gap that ultimately proved too much to overcome.

Following a 4-1 decision for Nolan Boyd over Chris Pfarr at 184, which gave the Pokes a 20-10 lead, No. 6 Brett Pfarr and No. 9 Michael Kroells earned a major decision and a decision, respectively, taking a significant bite out of the OK State lead but leaving the Gophers a few points short of the victory.

Kroells was scheduled to take part in one of the afternoon’s two headline matches against No. 4 Austin Marsden but, following a flagrant misconduct call during Oklahoma State’s dual on Friday night, Marsden was ineligible for Sunday’s dual. Kroells instead wrestled Austin Schafer and took a 7-3 decision.

The other premier match went on as scheduled, with No. 9 Tommy Thorn challenging No. 1 Dean Heil at 141. Thorn wrestled tough against Heil, but dropped his third match of the season, a 7-3 decision. All three of Thorn’s losses have come by decision against opponents ranked in the top-five nationally.

Sunday’s defeat snapped the Gophers’ three-match winning streak in their series against the Cowboys, though Minnesota has still won four of the last six. Sunday was also the first time Oklahoma State knocked off Minnesota in Stillwater since the 2011-12 season. The three-point margin made the dual the third straight between the two teams settled by four points or fewer.

Minnesota will take a brief break from its dual schedule this week to defend its title against a nationally elite field at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. The two-day tournament will begin this Friday and wrap up on Saturday.

Wrestling Defeats No. 20 Northwestern, Falls to No. 12 Illinois at Grapple at the Garden

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Drexel wrestling team earned its first win over a nationally ranked team this season as it defeated No. 20 Northwestern by criteria, 21-20. Matthew Cimato was awarded Outstanding Wrestler honors after he defeated both the top-ranked 149 pounder in the country in Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern and No. 19 Kyle Langenderfer of Illinois. Drexel edged the Wildcats in its first dual of the day at the fourth-annual Grapple at the Garden before losing its second matchup to No. 12 Illinois by a margin of 31-9.

With his wins, Cimato improved his individual record to a team-leading 16-2. The redshirt junior has five technical falls, three major decisions and one pin thus far on the season and is a perfect 7-0 in dual meet competition.

Zack Fuentes got things started off for the Dragons against Northwestern with a 4-3 decision over Garrison White. In the 133 match, the Wildcats tied things up as Dominick Malone defeated David Pearce, 10-3. Then at 141, Northwestern's Jameson Oster earned a pin over Kevin Devoy Jr. to put the Wildcats ahead, 9-3.

Cimato, who was ranked 15th in the nation coming into Sunday's competition, upset the top-ranked Tsirtsis who was the NCAA Champion at 149 pounds two years ago. Cimato earned a 7-1 victory over the two-time All-American to cut Northwestern's lead to 9-6. The Wildcats would pull away again, though, as they won the next three consecutive matches to go ahead, 20-6 with only three matches remaining.

The Dragons, however, began to stage a comeback as Stephen Loiseau earned a technical fall over Regis Durbin at 184. Nezar Haddad won by forfeit at 197 to bring Drexel within three points again, 20-17, which left it up to Joey Goodhart to tie things up in the heavyweight match. Goodhart went on to win by a 4-1 decision to knot the team score up at 20-20 and Drexel ultimately was awarded the victory as they won by criteria on the basis of having the most bout points.

In the Dragons' second dual of the day, Fuentes again started Drexel off with a win in the 125 match but then Illinois' No. 11 Zane Richards earned a major decision over David Pearce at 133 to put the Fighting Illini ahead, 4-3. A technical fall from Brock Ervin at 141 increased Illinois' lead to 9-3, but then Cimato's second win of the day cut the Fighting Illini's lead to just three points.

Illinois would begin to pull away starting with the 157 match, in which the top-ranked Isaiah Martinez defeated Michael Comunale by fall and then added to its lead at 165 as No. 16 Steven Rodrigues earned a major decision over Austin Rose. Nick Elmer added to Drexel's points with a 7-3 win over Emory Parker at 174, but then an injury default from Loiseau at 184 would halt any chance Drexel had of staging another comeback. Illinois earned decisions in the final two matches to secure a 31-9 victory.

The Dragons, who move to 3-4 in dual meets, return to action on Dec. 5 when they will travel to College Park to face Maryland at 5 p.m. in Drexel's final competition of the 2015 calendar year.

No. 14 WRES Takes Down No. 7 Cornell, 21-13

Scarlet Knights go 2-0 at 2015 “Grapple at the Garden”

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2015) – The score clock showed a two-point deficit entering the final period at 125 pounds as redshirt sophomore Sean McCabe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) took his place in the defensive position.

Two minutes and two takedowns later, McCabe had his hand raised in an upset win against No. 18 Dalton Macri, and by dual’s end the Scarlet Knights had another ranked win, this one over No. 7 Cornell, 21-13, to close the 2015 “Grapple at the Garden.”

Rutgers (9-1) took six of 10 bouts from the Big Red (1-2) for their first win over Cornell since Jan. 31, 1998.

“Duals are important to me and duals are important to this staff,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “We want to wrestle the best teams, we want to go to different environments, and we want to wrestle programs like Cornell. It’s important to wrestle these big matches. There’s a long way to go, we’ve just got to keep getting better.”

Cornell scored victories from its ranked wrestlers at 133, 174, and 184 pounds after dropping the 125-pound match. No. 4 Nahshon Garrrett won a 6-1 decision over No. 17 Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.), No. 2 Brian Realbuto topped Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.), 6-1, and No. 1 Gabe Dean outlasted Nicholas Gravina (Allendale, N.J.) for a key 13-5 major decision.

But the rest of the RU lineup picked up the slack, beginning with No. 3 Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) at 141 pounds. Already with an 8-2 lead entering the third, Ashnault finished his day with his second fall in 5:14 against Dylan Realbuto.

Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) secured a crucial decision at 149 pounds by escaping the grasp of Joseph Galasso in the third period and hanging on for a 5-4 win. Dippery improved to 7-3 this season.

A loss at 157 pounds to John Van Brill (Mullica Hill, N.J.) cut the RU lead to 12-6, turning the attention to a ranked showdown at 165 pounds.

Once again, No. 9 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) made his presence felt. His 6-2 decision against No. 10 Duke Pickett improves his resume to 3-1 against ranked opposition this season, and bumps his record to 8-1 overall.

Wins by Cornell in the next two bouts shifted the pressure back to RU’s side of the mat, making the team score 15-13 with two matches to go.

Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) answered the bell, grinding out a 10-7 decision at 197 pounds to all but seal the dual. With an 8-4 lead entering the third, Hrymack succumbed to an escape and takedown to cut his lead to 8-7 in a hurry.

But Hrymack (7-3) stayed composed and escaped Scott’s grasp, securing riding time for the three point win.

With Cornell needing a fall at heavyweight to win the dual due to Ashnault’s pin earlier in the match, RU’s Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) left no doubt the Scarlet Knights would prevail.

Smith (8-2) coasted to an 8-1 decision against Jeramy Sweany, giving Rutgers its first top-10 win and fourth overall against ranked opposition this season.

“It validates what we’re doing is right” Goodale said. “The way we’re training, the way these guys are buying in, the way these guys believe – it validates all of that. But it doesn’t mean anything unless we go to Iowa City and wrestle well. So we’ve got to keep working, keep knocking off ranked opponents, and that’s what it’s all about for us.”

In the first match of the day against George Mason, Rutgers used nine bonus-point victories in a 47-0 performance under the MSG lights.

McCabe (6-3), Ashnault (9-0), and Gravina (7-2) won by fall in their matches against the Patriots, with Giraldo (7-3) and Dippery winning by tech fall. Van Brill (6-4), Perrotti, Bakuckas (5-3), and Smith all secured major decisions.

The “Grapple at the Garden” sweep sets up a Big Ten showdown at No. 2 (6-0) Iowa in Iowa City on Dec. 10. The Scarlet Knights open up their home Big Ten schedule with a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Dec. 12 against No. 5 Nebraska (6-0) at the RAC.

Terps Push Past Hofstra in NYC

Hodges picks up two victories at Grapple at the Garden

NEW YORK CITY – Redshirt senior Lou Mascola and freshman Wade Hodges earned back-to-back wins to lead the Maryland wrestling team past Hofstra, 24-13, at the Grapple at the Garden in Madison Square Garden Sunday afternoon.

The Terrapins (2-4, 0-1 Big Ten) finished the day on a high note with a comfortable win over the Pride. Hodges also won his match against Illinois lead Maryland.

Sophomore Jhared Simmons gave the Terps a 3-0 lead after a decision win at 125 pounds over Bryan Damon. After a scoreless opening period, Simmons easily reversed to nab a 2-0 lead in the second. A takedown in the final period punctuated a 5-0 win.

Hodges put together a spectacular performance that ended with a pin in the opening period. After controlling the action and securing a quick takedown, Hodges expertly turned Ryan Burkert on his back for the fall at 2:25.

At 157 pounds, Mascola started strong against Jahlani Callender, taking a 6-3 lead into the final period before holding on for an 8-6 win. Freshman Brendan Burnham put together another solid showing at 165, defeating Bobby Fehr, 4-2.

Redshirt freshman Garrett Wesneski used an escape in the third period to give Maryland a 24-9 lead after nine matches. The Terrapins also picked up a forfeit at 133 pounds while Alfred Bannister dropped a razor thin decision at 141 pounds to No. 16 Jamel Hudson.

Maryland faced Illinois in its first dual of the day and fell, 34-9. Hodges and fellow true freshman Jaron Smith picked up the victories for the Terps.

Simmons started the contest and fell 8-6 after a late takedown from Francis Edelen. Bannister dropped a close 3-2 decision to Brock Ervin in a match that saw the redshirt freshman control most of the action on the feet.

Hodges got the Terps on the board against No. 19 Kyle Langenderfer. After an uneventful first period, Hodges started the second period on top and built up 1:50 of riding time, while also earning a stall point. Hodges escaped at the beginning of the third period and stayed on his feet till the finish to earn the riding time point and the match, 3-1.

Smith made his dual-match debut at 184 pounds and stunned No. 18 Jeff Koepke with a pin in the second period. After a competitive opening frame, Smith took advantage of a Koepke mistake and turned it into a flash pin at 3:22.

Freshman Youssif Hemida also made his debut at heavyweight and wrestled well in a 6-1 loss to No. 14 Brooks Black.

Maryland returns to action at home on Saturday against Drexel. Action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., at the XFINITY Center.

"The guys showed a lot of promise," interim head coach Matt Storniolo said. "It was nice seeing a few guys go 2-0. We learned a lot about our team today and will be better in the long run for competing in this event.”
Brill was nothing short of dominant on Sunday, also picking up a tech fall in the first match of the day to go with his pin. He won by fall over Andy Francos in just 50 seconds. Brill started the day with an 18-2 tech fall of Drexel's Richard Viruet.
Luke Norland won the first two matches of his Northwestern career, coming from behind to win in each. In his first match against Drexel's Austin Rose, Norland trailed 6-1 but fought all the way back to win an 8-6 decision in sudden victory. He erased a 4-2 deficit vs. Gordon Bolig of Franklin and Marshall and won by fall to help put the Wildcats securely ahead in the dual.
"Winning my first two matches representing Northwestern in a world renowned arena was awesome," Norland said. "It was a fantastic beginning to my career, but I know I have a lot of room where I can and will improve.”
Malone was also undefeated on Sunday, winning by fall against Franklin and Marshall's Scott Stevens in just 56 seconds a match after a convincing 10-3 win over David Pearce of Drexel.
Northwestern dropped the first dual of the day to Drexel after a 20-20 tie left the decision up to criteria. The officials had to go deep into the tiebreak scenarios to pick a winner, ultimately giving the Dragons the victory based on a 46-44 advantage on individual match points.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is right back out to the east coast next weekend with matches at Princeton and Rider on Dec. 5. The Wildcats wrestle Princeton at 10 a.m. and Rider at 2 p.m.

Brown Wrestling’s Galiardo, Staudenmayer Conclude Action at Cliff Keen Invite

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Brown University wrestling junior captains Steven Galiardo and Justin Staudenmayer completed action for the Bears at the second day of competition at the 34th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday at the Cashman Center.

Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) and Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) each fell in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning, finishing one win shy of placing in the 149-pound and 157-pound divisions respectively. The duo ended the tournament – which included 13 teams ranked in the top 25 – with a combined five wins.

Staudenmayer, the No. 8 seed at 157 lbs., dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 3 seed Aaron Walker of The Citadel on Saturday. The two wrestlers stood tied at 1-1 with one escape apiece before Walker scored a takedown late in the third period.

At 149 lbs., Galiardo suffered an 8-2 setback to No. 8 seed Geordan Martinez of Boise State. Galiardo paced the Bears with three wins at the tournament.

Galiardo and Staudenmayer placed in both of Brown’s first two events of the season – the East Stroudsburg Open and the Navy Classic. Last year at the Cliff Keen Invite, Staudenmayer placed fourth at 157 lbs.

In the team standings, Brown finished 31st out of 39 schools with 17.5 points. No. 8 Missouri won the tournament with 154 points while No. 14 Cornell finished second with 113 points.

Next, Brown will compete at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., from Dec. 29-30 as well as the Franklin & Marshall Open on Dec. 30.

Friday Recap

Galiardo and Staudenmayer each advanced to the second day of competition to lead the Bears at the 34th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday at the Cashman Center.

The duo combined to pick up five wins on the first day of competition while three other Bears gained victories on the day. The tournament’s field includes 39 total teams with 13 teams ranked in the top 25.

At 157 lbs., Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) gained victories in each of his first two bouts to advance to the quarterfinals. He opened competition with a 4-0 win over San Francisco State’s Travis Ino before edging No. 9 seed Markus Scheidel of Columbia, 3-1, in a sudden victory period. After dropping a decision to No. 1 seed Ian Miller of Kent St., he will compete tomorrow against No. 3 Aaron Walker of The Citadel in the consolation bracket.

Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) posted a 3-1 record on the day at 149 lbs., winning three straight bouts in consolation competition. After dropping a decision to No. 12 seed Joey Delgado of Oregon St. in the round of 32, he began his streak with a 3-1 triumph over Columbia’s Tyler Ponte. He followed with a pin in 2:51 over Binghamton’s Frank Garcia and a 5-1 win over No. 10 seed Victor Lopez of Bucknell. Galiardo will wrestle against No. 8 Geordan Martinez of Boise St. in another consolation bout tomorrow,

Senior captain Augustus Marker (Castle Rock, Colo.) notched a 2-2 record at 197 lbs., claiming wins in his first two bouts to reach the round of 16. He pinned Harley DiLulo of Boise State in 2:41 before defeating Cal Baptist’s Paul Head, 4-3. In the round of 16, he fell to No. 1 seed J’Den Cox of Missouri in 4:49.

At 165 lbs., sophomore Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) finished the day with a 2-2 mark. He opened competition with a win via fall in 1:53 over Newberry’s Lukas Gilmore. After dropping a decision to No. 11 seed Tyrel White, LaBrie came back with another pin (3:22) against Jade Lloyd of Gateway Bible in the consolation bracket. LaBrie placed at the Navy Classic earlier this year.

Sophomore Michael Russo (Jersey City, N.J.) earned one bout win at 125 lbs., defeating Brant Leadbeter of Navy in consolation action via a 6-2 decision. Earlier this season, Russo placed at the East Stroudsburg Open.

When Brown completed its day, it stood in a tie for 28th in the team standings with 17.5 points.

NC State Wrestling Makes a #STATEment with 19-15 Road Win #4 Oklahoma State
Wolfpack wins 6 of 10 bouts, including final three of the dual

STILLWATER, OKLA. - The NC State wrestling team picked up one of its biggest wins in school history on Sunday afternoon, as the 13th-ranked Wolfpack went into #4 Oklahoma State and came away with a 19-15 win. The Pack (9-0) won six of the 10 bouts on the day, including the final three of the dual for the road win.

Down 15-10 with three matches left, #17 Pete Renda started the Pack's dual-winning stretch with a 9-8 upset of #15 Noal Boyd at 184 pounds. After Renda was up 4-1 in the first period, he increased that lead to 7-4 to start the third. Boyd came back with a near-fall, but Renda's reversal made it 9-6 late. Boyd got an escape point and was awarded a stalling point in the final seconds, but it was not enough as Renda improved to 6-0 on the season - all dual wins.

"We had 10 guys who left everything on the mat and showed the country how good we are," said Renda.

#20 Michael Boykin scored what would turn out to be the winning match, as his 3-2 win at 197 pounds gave the Pack the lead for good at 16-15. Boykin's takedown in the first period was the lone one of the bout, as the sophomore held on for a 3-2 win.

With the Pack up in the dual points, it came down to the battle of top-ranked heavyweights. #1 Nick Gwiazdowski picked up his third win of the young season over a top-10 foe, as he downed #4 Austin Marsden in the final bout, 7-4. Gwiazdowski scored all three of the bout's takedowns, and extends his NCAA-best winning streak to 65 matches.

"I'm really impressed with the belief in our guys from top to bottom," said Gwiazdowski. "These guys believed in themselves and got the job done, especially in a place with this huge crowd cheering against us and the history of this (Oklahoma State) program. This is a special win."

The dual started at 125, and redshirt-freshman Sean Fausz nearly upset #5 Eddie Klimara as the two went into OT. Tied 3-3 in extra time, Klimara scored the decisive takedown 27 seconds in for the 5-3 win.

The Wolfpack scored its first win at 133 pounds, as sophomore Jamal Morris dominated Brian Crutchmer on the mat for a 4-0 win. Morris scored a first period takedown, and rode Crutchmer the rest of the entire match, 6:16 total. A stall in the third made the final 4-0.

In perhaps the most exciting match of the night, #1 Kevin Jack narrowly fell to #3 Dean Heil, 10-8.

NC State once again evened the dual, after sophomore Sam Melikian scored a 5-2 win at 149 pounds, evening the score at 6-6.

Redshirt-senior Tommy Gantt gave the Pack's its second straight win in dominating fashion, as he scored an 18-6 major decision at 157 pounds that put the Pack up 10-6 midway through the dual. Gantt scored the lone takedown in the first period, then cruised the rest of the way with numerous takedowns for the victory.

"This was a great road environment," said Gantt. "We really showed how tough of a team we are. When the going got tough, we showed up. This is a huge win for our team."

The Cowboys would quickly retake the lead, as top-ranked Alex Dieringer posted a first-period pin over Lee Davis for the 12-10 lead.

Max Rohskopf bumped up a weight class and took on #2 Kyle Crutchmer, but fell 7-2. Oklahoma State increased its lead to 15-10.

The Pack then came out and won the final three match-ups to get the road win.

Bonus Points and Upsets Lead Iowa over Rutgers, 29-6

Hawkeyes score bonus points early, finish upsets late in 29-6 win

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won eight of 10 bouts to defeat 11th-ranked Rutgers, 29-6, on Thursday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes (8-0, 2-0) recorded three wins by bonus points and scored a pair of upsets at 157 and 285. Edwin Cooper, Jr. scored a takedown off the opening whistle and built up 1:27 riding time to defeat No. 17 Richie Lewis, 6-4, and Sam Stoll scored on a counter 20 seconds into overtime to defeat No. 6 Billy Smith, 3-1.

“I’ve had a couple of tough loses against some other ranked opponents,” said Cooper, who won for the first time in four nationally-ranked matches. “Getting this one and getting it done right will help in the future.”

Stoll has won seven straight matches since dropping the season opener to No. 4 Austin Marsden. He’s pinned four opponents during that stretch, and he now has a top 10 win under his belt.

“It’s good because it’s my first ranked win, but I know there is more I could have done in that match,” said Stoll. “Brands talks all the time that just because he’s a ranked opponent, it doesn’t have to be close. I have to believe that and I think I did some good things, but there is definitely more to improve.”

Stoll’s win put the lid on a dual that saw Iowa hold a 31-7 advantage in takedowns and a 98-44 lead in match points. The Hawkeyes scored 56 points in the third period.

“We had two wins over ranked opponents, but we are still finding some things out,” said UI head coach Tom Brands. “As long as they get better every time out we have a chance. And we have to compete. We still have a lot of work to do.”

The Hawkeyes opened the dual with a technical fall by Thomas Gilman at 125 and a major decision from Cory Clark at 133. Both wins were against ranked opponents.

“The results are what (other) guys see, and it’s going to scare them,” said Gilman. “He may have had close matches with tough opponents or other ranked guys, but when I go out and tech fall him it sends a message. I’m out here on a mission.”

Gilman’s win was his second of the season against a ranked opponent, and his eighth win overall -- all by bonus points.

Rutgers got on the board at 141 when third-ranked Anthony Ashnault used a four-point tilt in the opening period for the difference in an 8-4 win against Topher Carton.

“It was a missed opportunity,” said Carton, who was making his first dual appearance of the season. “I told coach I wanted to go and he gave me a shot. I had a chance to make a statement for the Carver crowd and I didn’t. There are no moral victories. I know I can beat that guy and any other guy in the country. But I have to go out and do it.”

Brandon Sorensen used nine takedowns to earn a 21-6 technical fall at 149, and after No. 12 Anthony Perrotti won 8-7 at 165 against Patrick Rhoads, the Hawkeyes closed the dual with four consecutive wins. Alex Meyer won 8-3 at 174, Sammy Brooks scored eight of the final nine points to rally for an 11-5 win at 184, and Nathan Burak won 6-1 with 2:20 riding time at 197. Stoll closed the dual with the overtime decision.

The Hawkeyes return to the mat Dec. 29-30 at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Illinois. The next home dual is Jan. 22 against Purdue at 7 p.m. (CT).

NOTES: Attendance was 6,791... Gilman improved to 8-0 with all eight wins by bonus points… Carton lost for the first time in five Carver-Hawkeye Arena appearances… Edwin Cooper, Jr., and Sam Stoll earned their first career wins over ranked opponent… Alex Meyer improved to 11-0 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

No. 2 Iowa Tops No. 11 WRES, 29-6

Hawkeyes take eight of 10 bouts, hand RU second loss of the year in Big Ten opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa. (Dec. 10, 2015) – No. 11 Rutgers wrestling could not overcome an early hole Thursday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where the Scarlet Knights (9-2, 0-1 Big Ten) fell to the No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes (8-0, 2-0 Big Ten), 29-6. The loss was the first for Rutgers since Nov. 15 against then-No. 22 Oklahoma.

Iowa claimed eight bout victories on the evening to dispel any chance of a Rutgers upset. The lone wins for the Scarlet Knights came from No. 3 Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) at 141 pounds and No. 12 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) at 165 pounds.

“I just thought we got bullied all over the mat,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “We got pushed all over the mat. We didn’t compete at certain spots and gave up easy takedowns, and then they got the crowd into it and the coaches into it. It just snowballed and we never recovered.”

The dual ended with an upset at heavyweight.

No. 6 Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) and Iowa’s Sam Stoll entered sudden victory locked at 1-1 before Stoll circled for a takedown and the 3-1 win. The loss dropped Smith to 8-3 this season.

Senior Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) had a two-match winning streak snapped with a 6-1 decision loss against No. 4 Nathan Burak. Hrymack falls to 7-4.

At 184 pounds, redshirt sophomore Nicholas Gravina (Allendale, N.J.) had No. 8 Sammy Brooks on his heels for the majority of the match.

Gravina shook free of Brooks’ grip early in the third period to move ahead, 4-3, quickly succumbing to a takedown to swing the advantage back in the Iowa grappler’s favor, 5-4, with 1:22 remaining.

Amid a scramble, Gravina repositioned and was able to press Brooks’ shoulders to the mat, nearly ending the bout with a fall. But Brooks took charge with a strong finish for an 11-5 win. Gravina slips to 7-2 with the defeat.

Iowa took decisions at 174 and 157 pounds to put the dual out of reach.

Redshirt junior Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) earned three escapes in an 8-3 loss to No. 3 Alex Meyer. No. 17 Richie Lewis (Toms River, N.J.) had a comeback bid come up short against Edwin Cooper Jr. following a major riding time deficit.

The junior tied the match at 4-4 down the stretch, but another Cooper Jr. escape coupled with the riding time point made it a 6-4 final. The loss was Lewis’ (7-1) first of the season.

Perrotti improved to 9-2 with a victory Thursday night. The redshirt senior got off to a 5-2 start against Patrick Rhoads but could not sustain it, as Rhoads roared back with a takedown in the second period and an escape in the third.

Perrotti iced the match with a takedown with 53 seconds left in the third period, despite another Rhoads escape and a stall call going against the Scarlet Knight.

Ashnault prevailed with an 8-4 decision against Topher Carton at 141 pounds. Ashnault (10-0) went to Carton’s ankle early in the first period and turned the Hawkeye for a four-point near fall count and an early 6-0 lead.

Carton fought back with 1:59 of riding time in the second period and registered a takedown in the third, but Ashnault hung on for the win to begin the year 10- 0 for the second consecutive season.

On the front end of intermission, the Hawkeyes picked up a trio of bonus-point wins, including a 21-6 tech fall from No. 2 Thomas Gilman over No. 18 Sean McCabe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), an 11-2 major decision from No. 3 Cory Clark over No. 17 Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.), and a 22-6 tech fall from No. 2 Brandon Sorensen over Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.).

Rutgers faces a quick turnaround with No. 4 Nebraska (6-0, 0-0 Big Ten) coming to Piscataway Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The Cornhuskers wrestle Maryland (3-4, 0-1 Big Ten) Friday night.

“You’ve got to put it behind you,” Goodale said. “That wasn’t a good effort. Our fans don’t deserve that effort, we have to be better. We have to wrestle a lot harder. We’re wrestling the best teams in the country, we have to wrestle harder and we have to compete harder.”

The Rutgers vs. Nebraska dual will stream live online on BTN Plus.

Pitt Dominates Edinboro, 24-9

Seven Panthers record victories

Results | WATCH: Edinboro Recap

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team improved its overall dual record to 4-1 after a dominating 24-9 performance over Edinboro (4-3, 2-0 EWL) Thursday night at the Fitzgerald Field House.

“It was a good performance,” head coach Jason Peters said. “We got it started with LJ Bentley and followed that with Dom Forys. We had a lot of tight matches through the middle. They took a couple from us that we thought we could get, but we finished strong with Ryan Solomon. It was a good win for the Panthers.”

The night started off with 125 pound freshman LJ Bentley collecting his eighth career victory as a Panther over Sean Russell. Bentley tallied one takedown and two escapes in the match and secured his win with riding time.

At 133 pounds, sophomore Dom Forys did not disappoint as he pinned Tony Recco in 2:21. Forys recorded five takedowns in the only period, giving Pitt a 6-0 lead in the dual.

Junior Mikey Racciato followed that with a close battle with Nate Hagan at 141 pounds. Racciato had two takedowns, while Hagan escaped once, giving Racciato a 4-1 lead entering the second period. The two fought back and forth as Racciato escaped and Hagan had a takedown and repeated that once more. Racciato ended the second period with an escape to secure the 7-5 decision.

The Panthers dropped the following matches at 149, 157 and 165 pounds. The Fighting Scots were attempting to make their way back as they trailed 12-9 entering 174 pounds.

Freshman TeShan Campbell put Edinboro’s efforts to a screeching halt as he fought his way to a 14-12 decision over Patrick Jennings. Campbell trailed the majority of the match, but a takedown with 32 seconds in the third tied the score at 11-11. Jennings escaped and Campbell followed that with a takedown, taking the lead 13-12 with the clock winding down. Campbell secured the win with riding time and a final score of 14-12, extending the Panthers lead to 15-9.

At 184 pounds, redshirt freshman Zach Bruce tallied two takedowns and two nearfall points en route to a 6-2 win over Chris Laird.

Redshirt senior Nick Bonaccorsi followed with a 4-0 win over Vincent Pickett. Although scoreless until the halfway point of the second period, Bonaccorsi escaped and had a takedown late in the second period to take the lead. He secured his win with riding time.

In the final bout of the night, redshirt sophomore Ryan Solomon scored the first point of his match late in the second period as he escaped from William Miller. Miller escaped in the third period to tie it 1-1, but two stalling calls against Miller handed Solomon a 2-1 victory and the finalizing the Panthers’ winning score to 24-9.

Pitt returns to the Fitzgerald Field House Saturday, Dec. 12 at 1 p.m. to take on No. 15 Wisconsin.

Mascola, Alexander Notch Wins Vs. No. 4 Nebraska

Terps Drop 30-9 Decision to Cornhuskers

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Redshirt seniors Lou Mascola (157) and Geoffrey Alexander (133) both secured victories for Maryland (3-5, 0-2 Big Ten), but it was not enough as the Terps fell 30-9 to No. 4 ranked Nebraska Friday evening at the XFINITY Center Pavilion. The Cornhuskers posted eight individual victories to move to 7-0 and 1-0 in the Big Ten.

The most exciting victory of the day for Maryland came at the 157 pound weight class, as Mascola went toe-to-toe with the nation’s No. 10 ranked wrestler in redshirt freshman Tyler Berger. The East Hanover, N.J. native held a slight lead heading into the second period, before the two wrestlers got tangled up on the mat. Mascola managed to flip Berger from an underneath position, pinning the Husker on his back for his second fall of the year.

After an unsportsmanlike penalty was accessed on the Huskers, The Terps held a 6-5 advantage through the first three matches of the evening. Nebraska answered back in the ensuing matches, using its deep roster of top ranked wrestlers to regain advantage. A decision for No. 4 Austin Wilson over redshirt junior Derrick Evanovich put the visitors ahead 8-6, while a major decision for No. 12 Micah Barnes over redshirt senior Josh Snook made it 12-6 at the first intermission.

After four straight Cornhusker wins, Alexander ended the night on a good note for the Terps with another surprise victory over No. 9 Eric Montoya. Alexander came out of the gates firing on cylinders, earning a takedown in the opening seconds to set the tone.

Another takedown before the end of the period gave the Pittsburgh, Pa. native a 4-1 edge, but Montoya continued to battle and came within two points by the middle of the second period. Alexander refused to yield, fending off any takedown attempts to secure a 6-2 victory in his 2015 dual match debut.

Maryland will enter an extended hiatus over the next several weeks, before returning to competition the weekend of December 28. The Terps will have wrestlers in action at the Wilkes Open (Dec. 28), the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30) and the Franklin & Marshall Open (Dec. 30).

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo, the State University of New York wrestling team won its home opener in dominant fashion, defeating Gardner-Webb, 30-6, at Alumni Arena on Friday night. The Bulls posted a pin and three major decisions en route to their first home victory since the 2013. With the win, the Bulls improved to 5-2 on the season - their best start since the 2010-11 campaign.

"I thought we wrestled well," head coach John Stutzman said. "They're a good team. That team beat us 33-6 last year. That same exact team. So, to come out and win like we won and score points like we were scoring points, it feels good."

The Bulls earned their second major decision in the first three matches when Brandon Lapi topped Ryan Hall, 10-3, at 141 lbs. Finally, Joe Ariola cruised past Hunter Gamble, 11-2, at 184 lbs. for the Bulls third major decision.

Tyler Rill earned his second pin of the season when he pinned Austin Trott in the third period to improved to 5-2 on the year.

After being deadlocked 1-1 following regulation, Bryan Lantry defeated Tyler Ziegler, 3-1, in a sudden victory at 133 lbs. Lantry earned the decisive 2-point takedown in the closing seconds of overtime. Equally as exciting was Tim Schaefer's buzzer-beating win over Kyle Ash at 157 lbs. Also earning decisions for the Bulls were Muhamed McBryde and James Benjamin. McBride won, 3-2, over Brett Stein at 174 lbs. and Benjamin defeated Gary Jones, 5-4, at 197 lbs.

Indiana's win was full of highlight performances, including Luke Blanton's upset win over #10 Jake Short in the 149 lbs. bout. Short recorded a couple takedowns in the first period, but Blanton countered with a pair of escapes to stay in striking distance. The second period was more of the same, with a takedown by Short and two more escapes for Blanton.

The Alexandria native went on the attack in the third period, and tied the match at 9-9 with 1:20 remaining in the third period. Then, with 35 seconds remaining, Blanton earned a takedown and a two-point nearfall. Blanton held the lead, and finished with a 17-10 decision. It was Blanton's first ranked win of his young IU career.

Blanton's decision sealed the Hoosiers' victory, but it was the 133 lbs. match that turned the tide for Indiana. IU senior Alonzo Shepherd faced an early 2-0 deficit after a late takedown by Minnesota's Sam Brancale. Shepherd shot out of a cannon to start the second period, locking Brancale to the mat in workmanlike fashion. The match, which appeared to be going Brancale's way, ended with Shepherd earning a pin at 3:44. Shepherd's second pin of the season lifted Indiana to their first lead of the evening.

National #11 Nate Jackson put the Hoosiers on the scoreboard in the 174 lbs. match, the second bout of the evening. Jackson showcased his outstanding work on the defensive side of his skill set, as he thwarted every takedown attempt by his opponent, Nick Wanzek. The 2015 NCAA qualifier totaled three takedowns and a nearfall on his way to a 9-3 win, his sixth win in a row.

Matt Irick took the mat in the 184 lbs. bout against Chris Pfarr. Both wrestlers were looking to earn a winning record and their first Big Ten dual win. Irick jumped to an early 4-1 lead with two takedowns in the first period. He followed that with another takedown and two escapes to take the 7-4 decision. It was Irick's first Big Ten dual win of his career.

Indiana's newcomer at 125 lbs., Elijah Oliver, faced another rookie who has shown a lot of promise in the early goings of the 2015-16 season. Oliver dominated the first two rounds, earning two takedowns, one escape, and over three minutes of riding time. Oliver nearly grabbed his seventh major decision of the season, but a late takedown by Skyler Petry shifted the result to a 13-8 decision in Oliver's favor.

innesota Falls to Indiana on Tiebreaking Criteria

Tied at 18 after splitting the dual’s 10 matches, the Hoosiers earned the winning point on the third tiebreaking criteria

After 10 matches at the Sports Pavilion on Friday night, there was no clear winner between No. 20 Minnesota and Indiana. The Gophers and the Hoosiers were tied at 18 after splitting five matches, the latter serving as the first tiebreaker when duals end with the two teams even on the scoreboard. It would take two additional tiebreakers to declare a winner, with Indiana’s 55 points scored in decisions, major decisions and tech falls edging Minnesota’s 52 and earning Indiana the criteria point and the victory, 19-18.

“We got to be the guys who score the points. We got to be the guys who get the bonus. You can’t let matches, either individually or team, go down like that,” said Head Coach J Robinson. “We didn’t do that. We wrestled well last week. You’ve got to be able to come back and do it again but we didn’t do it. Some of our guys got to take a deep look at themselves and figure out what they got to do to be consistent.”

In its ninth dual of the season, Minnesota drew weights for the first time and the meet began at 165 pounds, where Brandon Krone earned a 7-2 decision over Bryce Martin. The victory was Krone’s first career dual meet win after making his career dual debut two weeks ago at Oklahoma State.

Indiana fired back, leveling the match at three when No. 11 Nate Jackson defeated Nick Wanzek, 9-3, and jumpinig ahead when Matt Irick followed with a 7-4 decision over Chris Pfarr at 184 pounds.

No. 5 Brett Pfarr thrust Minnesota in front again when he pinned Jake Masengale in the first period of their 197-pound match. The fall was the third of the year for Pfarr and his seventh bonus win in his last nine matches. No. 8 Michael Kroells followed up with a 6-0 decision over Garret Goldman at heavyweight, putting Minnesota in front 12-6, the biggest lead either team would hold in the dual. Kroells’ win is his second in as many matches against Goldman.

Following the intermission, Indiana picked up a 14-8 decision at 125 before Alonzo Shepherd pinned Sam Brancale early in the second period of their match at 133 which, like Pfarr’s pin early, transformed a three-point deficit into a three-point advantage for the pinning team.

No. 11 Tommy Thorn pulled the Gophers even once again when he defeated Cole Weaver, 6-2, but the advantage was short-lived as Indiana again jumped in front by three with a 17-10 decision by Luke Blanton over No. 10 Jake Short at 149, leaving the Gophers in need of a win at 157 to at least tie, if not win, the dual.

Brandon Kingsley delivered that victory, taking an 8-4 decision over Jake Danishek. Kingsley’s win scored the three points need to evened the score for a third time on the night. With the score tied at 18, officials convened at the table and reviewed the tiebreaking criteria, which ultimately gave the match to Indiana.

A match-by-match summary of the dual is available at: z.umn.edu/wriuf.

Friday’s defeat snapped several Gopher winning streaks, including a 13-match run over the Hoosiers. It was Minnesota’s first loss in a Big Ten home opener since 2007-2008.

Minnesota will have several weeks off for finals and the holidays before returning to action at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Jan. 1 and 2. The Gophers return to dual meet action at home against Maryland on Jan. 8. That match will be the team’s lone home dual broadcast on the Big Ten Network this season.
