No. 8 @MizzouWrestling Takes Down No. 3 Ohio State, 26-17

Synon grabs pin to sway momentum, Miklus earns technical fall to give Mizzou the lead for good

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The fifth-largest crowd in Mizzou Wrestling history witnessed No. 8 #TigerStyle take down No. 3 Ohio State by a score of 26-17. The Tigers trailed the Buckeyes 10-0 following the first two bouts, but Mizzou fought back to win six of the next eight to win the dual. Redshirt junior 133-pounder Zach Synon (Cary, Ill.) swung the momentum in Mizzou’s favor following a pin for #TigerStyle’s first points of the night, while redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa) put Mizzou in the lead for good with a 15-0 technical fall over Kenny Courts.

An announced crowd of 2,507 saw Synon pin Johnni DiJulius at 5:59 in the third period. Synon and DiJulius were deadlocked, 2-2, heading into the third period, before Synon put DiJulius on his back following a takedown. The Hearnes Center crowd erupted following the pin. DiJulius was ranked No. 5 in the nation heading into the match, while Synon ranked in at No. 12.

Synon’s victory was the first of three in a row for #TigerStyle, as redshirt junior 141-pounder Matt Manley (Perry, Okla.) and redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) followed the performance with wins of their own. Manley trailed, 3-2, late in the third period against Micah Jordan, but grabbed a takedown in the closing seconds to steal the match, 4-3. Mayes gave Mizzou its first lead of the night after winning by route of a major decision, 12-3, over Cody Burcher. The major decision pushed Mizzou ahead, 13-10 heading into intermission.

Ohio State countered with two wins to regain the lead, 17-13, when redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.) stepped onto the mat. Butler dominated Dominic Prezzia for the full seven minutes and took the match by way of a major decision, 13-3. Next up was Miklus, who recaptured Mizzou’s lead for good following another dominating performance. Miklus, facing Courts for the second time in as many weeks, did not allow the Buckeye grappler to score a single point, winning the match with a 15-0 technical fall.

Mizzou led 22-17 heading into the final match of the night, the 197-pound match. Junior 197-pounder J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) refused to give an inch to Mark Martin, allowing the Buckeye grappler to score two escapes in the match. Cox defeated Martin with a 13-2 major decision, earning four points and capping the score at 26-17.

Mizzou will return to the mat again tomorrow afternoon when it matches up against No. 21 Ohio. The dual will begin at 1 p.m. at the Hearnes Center, with ESPN3/WatchESPN providing the broadcast.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Momentum-shifting bonus point victories for No. 8 Missouri at 174, 184 and 197 pounds lifted the Tigers to a 26-17 victory over No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday evening at the Hernes Center in Columbia, Mo.

THE SHORT STORY
Training 17-13 entering the final three matches of the dual, Missouri scored two major decisions and a tech fall to earn its 31st consecutive dual match victory. Ninth-ranked Blaise Butler started it off with a 13-3 major decision over Dominic Prezzia, sixth-ranked Willie Miklus followed that up with a 15-0 tech fall over No. 11 Kenny Courts and reigning All-American J’Den Cox finished it off with a 11-2 major decision over Mark Martin.

STARS OF THE NIGHT
Ohio State won four matches on the night, highlighted by Nick Tavanello’s pin of James Romero at 285 pounds to start off the match. Tavanello quickly fell behind in the first period 7-2 on a four-point near fall, but battled back with a takedown and two-point near fall just before the first period buzzer sounded to tie the score at 7-7.

In the second period, Tavanello went ahead 9-8 and then finished off the match by getting Romero on his back and picking up his fifth fall of the year. The redshirt junior from Wadsworth, Ohio is now 12-2 on the year, just one win shy of his victory total from all of last year.

In the next match of the night, reigning national champion Nathan Tomasello ran his winning streak to 28 with a 10-1 major decision in which took control in the second period and never looked back. Leading 7-1 late in the third, he scored a takedown and tacked on a riding time point for the key bonus points.

After Missouri won the next three matches – including a third period fall at 133 pounds and a takedown by No. 13 Matt Manley with seven seconds left at 141 pounds that handed Micah Jordan his first loss of the year – Jake Ryan gave Ohio State the lead back with a dominating 10-2 major decision over Luke Fortuna. In the match, Ryan racked up over three minutes of riding time while also taking down Fortuna four times.

Bo Jordan extended the Buckeye lead to 17-13 by picking up three points via a 6-4 decision over ninth-ranked Daniel Lewis. Two first-period takedowns gave Jordan a 4-1 lead and he held on from there, scoring another takedown early in the third period.

INDIVIDUAL/TEAM NOTES

  • Three members of the Buckeyes’ lineup remain unbeaten this year – Tomasello (10-0), Ryan (10-0) and B. Jordan (6-0).
  • Tavanello and freshman Ke-Shawn Hayes are tied for the team lead with five falls thus far in 2015-16.
  • Seven of Tomasello’s 10 wins this year have come by either major decision, tech fall or fall.
  • Five of the 10 matches on Saturday night featured ranked in the Top 15 of their respective weight classes.
  • Saturday’s dual vs. Missouri was one of seven this year against teams that are currently ranked in the USA Today/NWCA Top 25 poll. The Buckeyes’ next ranked foe will be No. 12 Illinois on Jan. 3 in Champaign, Ill.

UP NEXT

No. 11 Rutgers Wrestling Upsets No. 4 Nebraska, 17-16

Scarlet Knights win by criterion 3.15.3

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 12, 2015) – By the time the clock ticked to zero, Nicholas Gravina (Allendale, N.J.) admitted he wasn’t sure who had won the 184-pound bout. He was quickly reminded by the 2,652 fans cheering on their feet at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

Gravina got his hand raised with an upset win over No. 4 T.J. Dudley, two other Scarlet Knights secured upsets, and No. 11 Rutgers wrestling beat No. 4 Nebraska by criteria, 17-16, Saturday afternoon for its first Big Ten win of the season.

Rutgers (10-2, 1-1 Big Ten) prevailed, 51-48, in criterion 3.15.3 – total match points scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls – to claim its first Big Ten win in front of the N.J. faithful.

“It’s great to fill the arena and pack the RAC, but you want to win. Today was that day,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “I’ve been dying for one of those. We’ve been close and I just think what happened in the last 48 hours makes it even more special.”

“We needed a huge upset somewhere, and Nick got it.”

Rutgers’ win was its second over a top-10 opponent this season and fifth against a team ranked in the USA Today/ NWCA Coaches Poll. What’s more, the victory secured the program’s first top-five win since a 24-7 rout against Virginia Tech at the RAC on Jan. 21, 2011.

Gravina earned his first victory over a ranked opponent in his young RU career.

The Northern Highlands Regional HS product started the period on bottom, reversed Dudley with 1:25 on the clock and rode out the All-American the rest of the way. The win tied the dual at 13-13 with two matches remaining.

“I just tried to wrestle as hard as I could and it worked out,” Gravina said. “Just like everyone other match, I had to push pace, go as hard as I could, try to score as much as possible, not to go too much over the head, and that was it.”

Senior Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) took No. 16 Aaron Studebaker to the wire at 197 pounds.

Neither wrestler scored a takedown in regulation or a minute of sudden victory, but Studebaker reversed Hrymack in the first round of tiebreakers and hung on for the 3-1 win.

With the dual favoring the Cornhuskers (7-1, 1-1 Big Ten), 16-13, entering heavyweight, Rutgers needed redshirt senior Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) to deliver.

The No. 6-ranked heavyweight in the nation did just that with an 8-2 win against No. 13 Collin Jensen. The point differential in Smith’s bout gave Rutgers enough to score the criteria point and snap Nebraska’s 16-dual winning streak.

Consecutive upset wins at 157 and 165 pounds were key in leading RU to victory Saturday afternoon.

Junior Richie Lewis (Toms River, N.J.) got the trend started with a 10-3 decision against No. 10 Tyler Berger. The No. 17-ranked Lewis (8-1) took Berger down three times and got a four-point tilt in the win – his first against a ranked opponent.

“After I won coach Goodale said to me ‘this is what you came here for,” Lewis said. “To wrestle at the RAC and be on a team like this with nine of my brothers is exactly what I came here for.”

Redshirt senior Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) kept the momentum going with a 9-4 decision against No. 4 Austin Wilson. Wilson held a 3-2 lead entering the second period, but Perrotti (10-1) reversed five seconds in and scored five additional points to put it away. The win, Perrotti’s team-leading fourth against a ranked opponent, brought the dual to a 10-10 tie with four matches to go.

“It’s huge. As coach said, the last 48 hours were really tough,” Perrotti said. “We went out to Iowa and we got beat eight matches to two, and to say that me and Anthony [Ashnault] picked up the only ‘Ws’ – we were not happy with our performance at all. Waking up this morning I just felt different. I felt ready. I felt prepared.”

Early on the Huskers had control, with No. 10 Tim Lambert (125 pounds), No. 9 Eric Montoya (133 pounds), and No. 7 Jake Sueflohn (149 pounds) all earning wins to give Nebraska a 10-4 dual lead.

RU broke through at 141 pounds thanks to No. 3 Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) against No. 17 Anthony Abidin. Ashnault lost twice to the Husker last season, but made a statement Saturday with an 11-2 major decision.

Ashnault (11-0) is off to the best start of his career and has topped three top-20 opponents. Seven of his 11 wins were by bonus-points.

“We’re more of a team than we’ve ever been,” Ashnault said. “We’re one unit. Everyone gets along really well. The 30 guys on the team are my best friends and I wouldn’t want to be spending time with anyone else. This is what I came to Rutgers for, to be a part of things like this. It’s really cool to see it all come true.”

Rutgers competes next at the Midlands Championships from Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill.

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team collected its fifth dual victory over No. 15 Wisconsin (1-1) 25-9 Saturday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House.

Pitt entered the dual having received just nine votes in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll on Tuesday while Wisconsin came in at No. 15. Those numbers did not affect the Panthers this afternoon as they never trailed in the team score.

“Rankings are just a number, but it’s always nice when people think well of you,” head coach Jason Peters said. “These guys earned it. They worked hard and now they are sitting 5-1 and won a tournament. I think we’re getting better week-to-week, so I’m happy for them.”

Ranked No. 19 by InterMat, redshirt sophomore Ryan Solomon set the tone for the dual at 285 pounds as he pinned Brock Horwath in 1:29, giving Pitt an early 6-0 lead.

Freshman LJ Bentley used Solomon’s momentum at 125 pounds to win in an exciting sudden victory match, 14-12 over Johnny Jimenez. Bentley fired first with a takedown and Jimenez escaped in the first period. Jimenez took the lead in the middle of the second period after collecting six total nearfall points. However, Bentley wasn’t finished just yet as the Twinsburg, Ohio native, strung together five total takedowns in the third period to bring the score to 12-12 at the end of regulation. A takedown by Bentley in sudden victory gave him the win, extending Pitt’s team score to 9-0.

At 133 pounds, No. 19 Dom Forys came out with an impressive win over No. 4 Ryan Taylor. The sophomore defeated the returning All-American in a 10-6 decision. Taylor struck first with an early takedown, but a reversal by Forys would tie the score entering the second period. Forys escaped from the bottom, taking a 3-2 lead. Taylor had another takedown in the second, but Forys escaped and had another takedown, giving him a 6-4 lead entering the final period. Forys finished the match with two more takedowns to secure his win and improving Pitt’s score to 12-0.

No. 9 Mikey Racciato carried the winning momentum into his match at 141 pounds, defeating Luke Rowh 9-4. The junior had an early takedown in the first period and Rowh escaped. Racciato wouldn’t score again until the beginning of the third period as he dominated with two reversals, a two-point nearfall and had riding time.

At 157 pounds, redshirt senior Ronnie Garbinsky picked up his first dual win of the season as he won in a 4-2 decision over TJ Ruschell. Garbinsky recorded two escapes and a two-point nearfall in his victory.

Freshman TeShan Campbell put on another impressive performance this afternoon at 174 pounds. Campbell defeated No. 16 Rickey Robertson in a 13-5 major decision. The Pittsburgh native opened with a takedown and would have two more in the second period. In the third, a reversal, two more takedowns and riding time secured his eighth win as a Panther.

In the final bout of the day at 197 pounds, redshirt senior Nick Bonaccorsi came out with a convincing 5-3 decision over Eric Peissig. The Pittsburgh native led 2-1 at the end of the first period after an early takedown. An escape and takedown in the third period ensured the victory and a Pitt win as well.

The Panthers return to the mats December 29 as the squad travels to the Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern.

Wisconsin suffers first loss of season to PittsburghLubeck, Jordan and Christensen picked up wins

On the web: http://go.wisc.edu/c8kj4q

PITTSBURGH - The Wisconsin wrestling squad suffered its first dual loss of the season, 25-9, to Pittsburgh on the road.

The Badgers previously shut out UW-Whitewater by a lopsided 43-0 score on November 12 at the UW Field House.

The Badgers (1-1) fell in the first four bouts to give Pittsburgh an early 15-0 lead until junior Rylan Lubeck stopped the Panthers' streak with a 3-1 decision at 149 pounds.

After two periods with goose eggs on the board, Lubeck took a 2-0 lead with a last-minute takedown. Lubeck surrendered an escape point to Lee but the junior had racked up plenty of riding time to clinch a 3-1 decision. He is now 9-7 this season.

Although Wisconsin was docked with its first blemish of the season on Saturday, Isaac Jordan maintained his perfect record, narrowly defeating Cody Wierioch in the 165-pound match.

With the team down 18-3, No. 3 Isaac Jordan stepped onto the mat with a lot of pressure and a lot of expectations but he had no problem handling them. Jordan used a late takedown in the first period to go up 2-0. Cody Wierioch answered with a takedown of his own in the second period but Jordan escaped for a 3-2 advantage going into the final period. Jordan eventually squeaked out a close 4-3 victory over Weirioch to continue his spotless 12-match winning streak.

Ryan Christensen earned Wisconsin's third win by edging out Zach Bruce in the 184-pound match. Going into the third period, Christensen led, 1-0, but earned another point to finish out the match with a 2-0 decision.

The win gave him double-digit wins on the season, as he joined Jordan and Hunter Ritter (unattached) as the only other Badgers with 10 wins or more. Christensen is now 10-7 on the season.

After starting out strong with plenty of nearfall points, UW sophomore Johnny Jimenez(125) let a 7-2 advantage slip away from him as Lorenzo Bently notched three takedowns to bounce back and force overtime. Bentley rallied to come out on top 14-12 in sudden victory.

Pitts' Ronnie Garbinsky and Wisconsin junior TJ Ruschell (157) wrestled a tight match all the way through. Garbinsky held a 3-0 advantage with only one minute remaining until Ruschell brought out a big reversal with just seconds left on the clock but was overcome by a 4-2 decision from Garbinsky.

The first bout of the day saw senior Brock Horwath (HWT) pinned at 1:29 by No. 12-ranked Ryan Solomon to give Pittsburgh an early 6-0 lead.

In a much-anticipated return, fourth-ranked Ryan Taylor did not see the opening results that he wanted as he lost by a 10-6 decision to No. 19 Dom Forys at 133 pounds. It was the only bout to feature two ranked wrestlers.

Luke Rowh fell in a 9-4 decision to No. 9 Mike Racciato in the 141-pound match, while 16th-ranked 174-pounder, Ricky Robertson, lost 13-5 to TeShan Cambell. The loss was Robertson's fifth of the year and first by major decision. He is 9-5 on the year.

At 197 pounds, Eric Peissig was unable to overcome Nick Bonaccorsi in a close 5-3 decision.

Wisconsin will wrap up its weekend slate on Sunday, as the Badgers open Big Ten competition against Penn State at Noon (CT).

STANFORD, Calif. – Back in action after more than three weeks since its last dual, the Stanford wrestling team dropped a XXX decision to visiting CSU Bakersfield, Thursday, at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, California.

After redshirt freshman Brian Rossi dropped a 12-8 decision to Sergio Mendez at 125 pounds, sophomore Mason Pengilly put the Cardinal on the board with a 9-3 decision over Carlos Herrera at 133 pounds. Pengilly tallied a takedown, six near fall points and 2:02 of riding time in the win. He is now 7-4 on the season.

The Roadrunners won the next three bouts to pull out to a 15-3 lead before the 10 minute television intermission.

Out of the break, redshirt junior Jim Wilson, ranked fifth nationally, turned in a dominating 10-1 major decision against Adam Fierro at 165 pounds. There was no score going into the second period, where Wilson rode Fierro out to rack up 2:00 of riding time. In the third period, Wilson notched an escape to go with two takedowns and four near fall points. The win moves Wilson to 7-1 on the year and 4-0 in duals.

At 174 pounds, redshirt sophomore Keaton Subjeck nearly knocked off seventh-ranked Bryce Hammond. Subjeck jumped out to a 6-3 lead after the opening period with a quick takedown and four near fall points. Tied 6-6 going into the final period, Subjeck scored a late takedown, but Hammond managed to turn it into a reversal to keep the scored knotted at 8-8.

In the extra period, Hammond secured a late takedown and tacked on two near fall points for the 12-8 sudden victory decision. Subjeck drops to 6-3 on the year and 2-2 in duals.

Redshirt junior Zach Nevills added to the Cardinal’s team score with a 7-0 decision over Dylan Bollinger at 184 pounds. Nevills improves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in duals this season.

Redshirt sophomore heavyweight Nathan Butler capped off the scoring with a fall in 6:54 over Matt Williams. It marked the second fall of the season for Butler, who moves to 5-1 overall.

Subject: Mecate Upends No. 2 Jack; ODU Falls to No. 3 NC State, 26-15
To:

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Despite splitting five matches with No. 3 NC State (11-0), Old Dominion (2-3) fell by a 26-15 score Thursday night in Raleigh, North Carolina after the Wolfpack picked up bonus points in four matches.

"We wrestled a lot tougher tonight than in any of our other matches and showed a lot of fight," head coach Steve Martin said. "Brooks Climmons picked up a good win and did what he needed to do. Jack Dechow overcame a lot of adversity in a hostile environment, giving up a locked hands, caution and stalling point, but never quit and broke his guy in overtime to secure a big win for us. Emilio Saavedra continues to improve and wrestle tough, and he just has to keep improving on a few technical areas. He is quite a competitor. Richardson controlled his match and got the job done at 149. Chris Mecate pushed the pace against Jack, who is a tremendous competitor. He put points on the scoreboard, and it was fun to watch. I was impressed with how we got off bottom, dictated the pace in overtime and were in good shape tonight. The guys who lost need to stop giving up bonus points, as we split five matches with the No. 3 team but lost on bonus points. This gives us something to build off of heading into Midlands next week."

In the featured bout of the night, a rematch of the 2015 NCAA fifth-place bout at 141, Chris Mecate avenged last season’s loss to Kevin Jack, defeating the nation's second-ranked wrestler 5-3 OT. Jack went up 2-0 in the second with a reversal, but Mecate responded with an escape and a takedown of his own to go up 3-2. After a Jack escape, the bout went to overtime where Mecate scored another takedown to earn the sudden victory.

Starting at 165, NC State’s sixth-ranked 157-pounder Tommy Gantt bumped up a weight class and defeated ODU freshman Seldon Wright by a 21-6 tech fall. Wright scored the opening takedown, but Gantt stormed back to earn the bonus-point win for the Wolfpack.

Trailing 5-0 in the dual score, Old Dominion’s Brooks Climmons earned a 2-1 victory over Nicky Hall at 174 to get the Monarchs on the board. At 184, Jack Dechow trailed 9-3 in the third period but battled back to tie the bout and send it to overtime at 9-9. In the sudden victory period, Dechow outlasted No. 15 Pete Renda to claim the thrilling 11-9 OT victory and give the Monarchs their first lead, 6-5.

The Wolfpack’s No. 18 Michael Boykin claimed a 9-4 victory over Austin Coburn at 197, and two-time defending NCAA Champion Nick Gwiazdowski picked up a first period fall at 285 over Andrew Snyder to give NC State a 14-6 lead heading into the intermission.

At 125, NC State’s Sean Fausz was leading Brandon Jeske 6-5 in the third period when a quick fall was called in the midst of a scramble to give NC State a 20-6 lead. Emilio Saavedra secured a 3-1 decision at 133 over Jamal Morris on the strength of a second period reversal to cut the Wolfpack lead to 20-9 heading into the final three matches.

Alexander Richardson defeated Beau Donahue by a 3-2 score at 149 before Chad Pyke defeated Austin Eads by disqualification in the night’s final match to give the Wolfpack a 26-15 win.

Next up for the Monarchs is the 53rd Annual Midlands Championships at Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois. Competition will begin Tuesday, Dec. 29 and will conclude on Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Two Pins Lead NC State Wrestling to 26-15 Win Over #24 Old DominionGwiazdowski (285) and Fausz (125) record back-to-back pins

RALEIGH, N.C. - Four of the Wolfpack’s five wins were bonus point wins, as the #3 NC State wrestling team defeated #24 Old Dominion 26-15 Thursday night. Starting with a technical fall in the first bout, the Wolfpack (11-0) scored back-to-back pins in the middle of the dual, and concluded the win with a DQ.

NC State improves its season record to a perfect 11-0, the most consecutive wins to start a season in school history. The Pack has also defeated all three ranked opponents it has faced thus far - #13 Minnesota, 31-3 and #4 Oklahoma State, 19-15.

Earlier in the day Tommy Gantt walked in graduation ceremonies getting his degree in Social Work, then tonight he started the Pack off with a bonus point win at 165 pounds. Wrestling up a weight, Gantt used a four-point near-fall in the third period and scored a 22-6 technical fall win that put NC State up 5-0.

ODU won the next two bouts by decision, giving the Monarchs a 6-5 lead. One of the featured bouts came at 184 pounds, as #2 Jack Dechow pulled off a comeback 11-9 OT win over #15 Pete Renda.

At 197 pounds, #18 Michael Boykin scored a 9-4 decision to put the Pack back up 8-6.

NC State then scored back-to-back pins, first at 285 pounds then at 125 pounds. No. 1 Nick Gwiazdowski turned an early takedown into a 50 second pin to push his NCAA-best winning streak to 66 matches.

At 125, NC State’s Sean Fausz scored the Pack’s second straight win with a pin at the 5:56 mark. Up 6-5 in the third, Fausz scored a takedown and immediately turned it into his third pin of the season.

ODU reeled off three straight wins at 133, 141 and 149 pounds to pull within 20-15.

The Pack concluded the match with an unconventional six points at 157 pounds. NC State’s Chad Pyke was in control of the bout late in the third with a 6-2 lead and the ride time point locked up, when ODU’s Austin Eads threw a punch and was disqualified.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mike Basford / basford.16@osu.edu WR: Late Surge Lifts No. 6 Ohio State Past Northwestern, 27-16Buckeyes win final three matches of the night, one via bonus points

RELATED INFO: Online Release| 2015-16 Schedule | 2015-16 Roster | Follow the Buckeyes on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Victories at 184, 197 and 285 pounds, including a dominating 16-0 tech fall by senior Kenny Courts (184 lbs.) lifted the sixth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team to a 27-16 victory over Northwestern on Friday evening at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. The Buckeyes move to 4-1 overall, 1-0 in the Big Ten while Northwestern falls to 1-5.

THE SHORT STORY
Ohio State won five of the nine weight classes that were contested (NU forfeited at 157 lbs.) and received key bonus points from Courts, redshirt sophomore Bo Jordan (fall in 2:15) and Johnni DiJulius (major decision, 8-0) to pull out the hard-fought victory. Other winners for the Buckeyes included Mark Martin at 197, who edged Jacob Berkowitz, 8-6, and Nick Tavanello, who held on for a 6-3 decision over Conan Jennings.

DIJULIUS GETS THINGS STARTED
After Northwestern jumped out a 5-0 lead on the strength of Garrison White’s 17-2 tech fall over Mike Manuche at 125 pounds, Johnni DiJulius swung the momentum back in Ohio State’s favor with an 8-0 major decision against Dominick Malone.

Ahead 6-0 late in the third period and with riding time locked up, DiJulius got one final takedown to earn the extra bonus point. Ranked eighth in this week’s InterMat poll, DiJulius moved to 10-1 on the season and also picked up his 107th career victory. His opponent, Malone, was 9-1 coming into the match and was the Wildcats’ win leader so far this season.

WILDCATS WIN AT 141, 149
NU’s Jameson Oster earned a 16-0 tech fall over Mike Hozan at 141 pounds, setting the stage for the 149 pound match between third-ranked and defending Big Ten champion Justin Tsirtsis and redshirt freshman Cody Burcher. A Gnadenhutten, Ohio native, Burcher dropped a hard-fought 5-3 decision in which he gave up just one takedown. Tsirtsis led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 4-1 in the second after a reversal, but Burcher was able to escape and then score another escape at the start of the third period, but could get no closer. Tsirtsis tacked on his fifth point via riding time.

JORDAN GIVES THE BUCKEYES THE LEAD
A forfeit by NU at 157 pounds made the score 13-10 in favor of the Wildcats, but second-ranked Bo Jordan gave Ohio State the lead with a pin of Luke Norland in just 2:15. Jordan, how 7-0 on the year, has three falls this season, the last coming at Cleveland State on Nov. 24.

OHIO STATE WINS THE FINAL THREE
Tied at 16-16 after Mitch Sliga’s 4-0 decision at 174 over Dominic Prezzia, Kenny Courts needed just 3:29 to pick up a 16-0 tech fall over Regis Durbin at 184 pounds, giving Ohio State the lead for good at 21-16. Courts scored early and often in the first period, getting a takedown and three four-point near-falls to take a commanding 14-0 lead. The match lasted just 29 seconds into the second period as Courts picked up one final takedown to secure the tech fall, his 11th win of the year and fifth via bonus points.

Martin took down Berkowitz twice in the first period for a 4-1 lead and once in the second to go ahead 6-2. It was 7-4 late in the third when Berkowitz drew to within one, 7-6, on a takedown, but Martin’s defense allowed him to hang on in the end and tack on one more point for riding time.

Tavanello closed the night out with a 6-3 decision at 285 pounds that was highlighted by a first-period takedown, a third-period escape to take a 5-3 lead and well over one minute time that added up to his 13th win of the season. A NCAA at-large qualifier last year, Tavanello is ranked 19th this week by InterMat and is 13-2 on the season.

TEAM/INDIVDUAL NOTES

  • Ohio State has now won seven of the past eight meetings against Northwestern.
  • Courts’ 16-0 tech fall was the 80th win of his career.
  • Nathan Tomasello did not compete tonight for Ohio State because he will wrestle tomorrow in the 2015 Senior Nationals/Trials Qualifier in Las Vegas. Tomasello must finish in the top seven of his weight class (57 kg.) to earn a sport at the Olympic Trials, which takes place April 9-10 at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
  • Mike Hozan made his varsity debut at 141 pounds. Hozan is a redshirt sophomore from Homerville, Ohio.
  • Seven of the nine wrestlers for the Buckeyes tonight are Ohio natives.

Oklahoma State Wrestling Wrangles Wyoming, 34-7

LARAMIE, Wyoming – Oklahoma State’s seventh-ranked wrestling team put on another dominating performance, defeating new conference opponent Wyoming, 34-7, on Friday night at the UniWyo Sports Complex.

The Pokes (4-2) won eight bouts with five coming with bonus points.

“It’s always tough to come here and wrestle,” coach John Smith said. “We didn’t wrestle to our full potential in some of those matches, but I will say that I’m pleased with the score.”

Eddie Klimara improved to 12-1 on the season, opening the dual with a win for Oklahoma State. The All-American defeated Drew Templeman after putting up a strong first-period performance that saw Klimara score two takedowns. Later in the third period, he notched two more takedowns to pull ahead and take the bout, 9-4.

Kaid Brock, ranked 10th after his debut last week, came out strong once again as he took on P.T. Garcia at 133 pounds. Brock was on the mat only two minutes, picking up 16 points to end the match in a technical fall. Brock had just one takedown and picked up four sets of nearfall points.

At 141 pounds, top-ranked Dean Heil handed No. 15 Bryce Meredith his first loss of the season with a 5-4 win. The bout was scoreless after the first period, but a takedown from Heil with nine seconds left in the second gave him a 2-1 advantage heading into the final period. Heil tallied the escape and another takedown to separate the score, 5-1. An escape from Meredith and stalling calls on Heil kept the bout close as Heil edged out Meredith by one point.

“From the standpoint of the entire match, I thought we wrestled pretty well. We pretty much left off where we ended last week,” Heil said. “As far as my match goes, it was ugly. Definitely wasn't the match I wanted. Winning ugly matches like that is nice, but I could've stretched the score in the match and I didn't. I can take away a lot from the match and I've got plenty of time to work on what I need to in time for the Southern Scuffle.”

After losses at 149 and 157 pounds, OSU responded with four-consecutive bonus-point victories, including back-to-back falls at 165 and 174 pounds.

No. 1 Alex Dieringer picked up his third fall of the year, sticking Chaz Polson in 32 seconds. He is now in the midst of a 58-match win streak, tying OSU legend Yojiro Uetake to sit at sixth all-time.

Chandler Rogers followed suit with a pin of his own in his varsity debut for the Cowboys, competing at 174 pounds. He knocked off No. 16 Ben Stroh, taking him down twice before sticking him in 2:41. Rogers improves to 10-2 on the season.

“Tonight was fun,” Rogers said. “It was a great first experience starting for OSU. It’s definitely tough wrestling on the road, but being able to overcome that was a proud moment. It was a good night.”

At 184 pounds, Nolan Boyd put up a solid performance, scoring a major decision for OSU with an 18-5 win over Jace Jensen. Boyd led the bout 7-0 after the second period and racked up 10 more points and riding time to close out the match. On the night, Boyd earned seven takedowns.

The final bonus points of the night came from Austin Schafer at 197 pounds, who put up 12 points against Brandon Tribble. Schafer stayed consistent throughout the match, picking up at least one takedown in each period. The win was Schafer’s 12th of the year.

Heavyweight and fourth-ranked Austin Marsden finished out the dual with a 5-3 win over Tanner Harms. The bout was closely contested but two takedowns from Marsden gave him the advantage and the win.

The Cowboys are back in action on Jan. 1-2 as they compete in the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Roadrunners Top Cardinal
Stanford falls 22-16 to CSU Bakersfield

STANFORD, Calif. – Back in action after more than three weeks since its last dual, the Stanford wrestling team dropped a XXX decision to visiting CSU Bakersfield, Thursday, at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, California.

Stanford (2-2, 1-1 Pac-12) won just four of the 10 bouts and gave up bonus points in three of its losses. CSU Bakersfield moves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-12.

Up next, Stanford travels to Reno, Nevada for the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Dec. 20. The Cardinal will also wrestle in the Southern Scuffle during the Holiday break on Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Two Pins Lead NC State Wrestling to 26-15 Win Over #24 Old Dominion
Gwiazdowski (285) and Fausz (125) record back-to-back pins

@IlliniWrestling Five Individual Titles in Reno

Team Wins Tournament with Team Score of 152

RENO, Nev. – In the team’s first tournament-style competition of the season, five Illini won an individual title, while three others placed second at the Reno Tournament of Champions. As a result of the dominating individual performances, Coach Heffernan’s squad won the team competition as well, finishing with 152 points despite having no wrestlers compete at 125 pounds or 149 pounds.

“Our team looked very solid and we are getting better each week,” said Heffernan. “Still have time to figure things out as we move on. The Big Ten season will force our guys to raise their level even more, which we will have to. “[I thought] both Emory [Parker] and Andre [Lee] had good days and had solid wins, both are making progress and getting better.”

No. 3 Zane Richards continued his dominating start to 2015-16 with five victories on the afternoon, four of which were by major decision or greater. The junior began the day with back-to-back pins over Pt Garica and Michal McDaniel before using a decision over Jaydin Clayton (Missouri) and Corey Keener (Central Michigan) to reach the title bout. Once there, Richards wasted no time as he jumped out to an early 12-2 lead and never relinquished it, claiming a 20-8 final tally against Corey Keener of Central Michigan.

At 149 pounds, redshirt freshman Isaac Reinemann finished the day with two tough losses, falling in the first round and the consolation round, his day ending after Tyler Cowger (Southern Oregon) edged him 4-0.

No. 1 Isaiah Martinez notched consecutive wins 51-56 on Sunday afternoon in Reno on his way to a convincing first-place finish in Reno. Martinez reached the 157-pounnd title match with four technical falls accompanied by his third pin of the season. In the title bout, Joe Smith of Oklahoma State gave him his best test of the day, but eventually succumbed to the defending national champion by a count of 11-5.

No. 9 Steven Rodrigues impressed again with five victories to push his record to a perfect 13-0 on the season. The senior used three major decisions and a technical fall to advance to the 165-pound championship bout. Rodrigues was tested by Jim Wilson of Stanford in a hard-fought, low scoring affair through most of three periods, but Rodrigues battled his way to a 3-2 decision to earn the individual title.

The most dominating start to the tournament came from No. 4 Zac Brunson as he piled on three pins in his first three matches, giving him eight on the season and more than doubling his career total entering the season. After a decision and technical fall in the 174-pound quarterfinal and semifinal, Brunson notched his own individual crown with an 8-4 victory over Big Ten foe Nate Jackson of Indiana.

184 pounds proved to be the most compelling weight class for the Illini in Reno, as both No. 16 Jeff Koepke and Emory Parker worked their way through the bracket. Koepke recorded a team-high four falls on the afternoon on his route to the title bout, while Emory Parker used grit to fight his way through four decisions, before grabbing a semifinal clinching pin. With both teammates undefeated on the day, the 184-pound title bout would be the decider. Although Parker stayed within in striking distance of Koepke into the third period, the veteran Koepke proved too much for the younger Parker, taking the bout by a score of 8-4.

Much like Parker, Andre Lee showed grit and toughness as he grinded out decisions on his way to the semifinal round this afternoon. After earning a late pin against Garrett Demers (MSU-Northern), Lee gave Marshall Haas (Citadel) everything he could handle in the title match. However, Haas moved ahead of Lee in the third period, and held on for a 4-2 victory.

After receiving an opening bye to start the heavyweight bracket, No. 13 Brooks Black edged Eskam Chace (Arizona State) 2-1, and then tacked on three more decisions to reach the championship match. However, Tanner Harms (Wyoming) got the best of Black, edging him 4-1 to place first.

Next up for the Orange and Blue will be Midlands a week from Tuesday where they will look to improve upon their second place finish last year. Coverage will begin at 9 a.m. on BTN Plus on December 29 and concludes with the championship matches live on Big Ten Network Wednesday, December 30 at 8 p.m.

Piccininni, Smith Finish Second at Reno Tournament of Champions

RENO, Nevada – Oklahoma State wrestling freshmen Nick Piccininni and Joe Smith made their ways to the finals of the Reno Tournament of Champions at 125 and 157 pounds, respectively, on Sunday night.

Smith had a smooth ride to the semifinals, handily defeating each of his opponents. In his first match of the day, he pinned Tino Nieves of Highline in less than 30 seconds. He went on to tally another fall and two major decisions to find himself in the semifinals against Luke Smith of Central Michigan. Luke struck first with a takedown, but Joe tied the match at the end of the first period with a reversal. The Cowboy notched another reversal in the third period and earned riding time advantage to win, 5-4, and send him to the finals. Waiting for him was 2015 NCAA champion Isaiah Martinez. The two exchanged takedowns, but a four-point nearfall from Martinez separated him from Smith and he took the match, 11-5.

At 125 pounds, freshman Nick Piccininni produced a runner-up finish. He took on Wyoming junior Drew Templeman in the finals. The Cowboy started the day with a technical fall and a major decision and met up with Chasen Tolbert of Utah Valley in the semifinals, who he bested in a high-scoring 11-8 match. In the finals, Templeman controlled most of the match, walking away with a 15-8 win.

Chandler Rogers finished third at 174 pounds after a 9-5 win over Keaton Subjeck of Stanford. In his first two matches, Rogers collected 34 points over his opponents to head to the quarterfinals, where he took on No. 16 Ben Stroh for the second time this weekend. Stroh was victorious in the 5-2 meeting, sending Rogers to the consolation bracket. There, Rogers picked up three falls to earn a spot in the third-place bout.

At 141 pounds, Tristan Moran picked up two wins by fall to start the day. He later met up with No. 15 Bryce Meredith in the semifinals, but dropped a 12-6 decision. Moran then took himself to the third-place match, going head-to-head with Ian Nickell of CSU-Bakersfield. Nickell held off Moran, allowing only one point and taking the match 6-1. Moran, a true freshman, finished fourth at the event.

Also competing at the tourney was Dusty Hone (141), Lincoln Olson (141), Joe Schumacher (141), Dalton Moran (157), Luke Bean (184) and Preston Weigel (197).

Oklahoma State wrestling will be back in action on Jan. 1-2 for the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Redshirt freshman Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) is ranked No. 2 at 141 pounds for the highest ranking of his career. Ashnault has a team-best 11-0 record this season.

Brunson Named B1G Wrestler of the Week

Junior Won 174-Pound Bracket at Reno Tournament

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Big Ten office announced that junior Zac Brunson has been named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week. The honor comes on the heels of a perfect, 6-0 record at the Reno Tournament of Champions, winning the 174-pound bracket. On his way to the crown, Brunson notched three pins and two wins over ranked opponents. This is Brunson’s second time receiving the weekly honor, last occurring on November 18, 2014. Additionally, this is the second time this season that an Illini has earned the honor, the first coming when Isaiah Martinez garnered the honor on December 1.

Zac Brunson, hailing from Eugene, Oregon, has opened eyes in the first two months of the season with a team-high, and career high, eight pins through his first 13 matches. He is currently third on the team in dual points with 38, just two behind team-leader Isaiah Martinez (40).

The two-time NCAA Qualifier is currently ranked No. 4 at 174 pounds according to W.I.N Magazine, tops in the Big Ten. In January, Brunson will be matched against some of the best in his weight class when No. 2 Iowa and No. 3 Penn State come to Champaign, pinning 174-pounders No. 5 Alex Meyer (Iowa) and No. 6 Bo Niickal (Penn State) against Brunson.

The Fighting Illini grapplers will compete at Midlands on December 29-30 before beginning the Big Ten slate with No. 9 Ohio State at Huff Hall on January 3 at 1 p.m.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pitt wrestling team captured its second tournament title of the season after compiling 94.5 points at the Lock Haven Classic Tournament on Tuesday.

Sophomore Dom Forys (133) and junior Mikey Racciato (141) claimed their second individual titles today as well.

Freshmen LJ Bentley (125) and TeShan Campbell (174) collected second place finishes, while redshirt freshman Jake Gromacki (125) and redshirt seniors Ronnie Garbinsky (157) and Nick Bonaccorssi (197) finished third.

As a team, the Panthers came out on top by just 6.5 points over No. 22 Indiana.

Forys put together dominating performances en route to his title. He started with a win by technical fall, 20-5, in 6:29 over John Edwards of Indiana. Forys then pinned Ian Lupole of Binghamton in an impressive 42 seconds, advancing him to the semifinals where he won in an 8-3 decision over Vince Rodriguez of George Mason. In his final match of the day, Forys came out with a 7-3 victory over Robert Rehm of Lock Haven.

Racciato jumped straight into the quarterfinals thanks to a bye. He pinned DJ Fehlman of Lock Haven in 1:58, moving him on to the semifinals. Racciato followed his pin with a major decision over Cole Weaver of Indiana, 13-3. In an all-Pitt final, Racciato won by injury default over fellow Panther Nick Zanetta.

The Panthers resume action Jan. 9 as they host the annual Pitt Duals at the Fitzgerald Field House.

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

@IlliniWrestling Completes Competition at Midlands

Deuce Rachal leads the Illini

EVANSTON, Ill. – In the team’s final completion of 2015, the Illinois grapplers sent seven wrestlers to the 53rd Ken Kraft Midlands tournament at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Of the seven competitors, five were freshmen that wrestled unattached and did not count towards the team’s score. Danny Hicks (184) and Duece Rachal (HWT) competed in Illini singlets this afternoon, combining to go 1-4 on the day. Coach Heffernan decided to hold his starters in Champaign as they prepare to host No. 8 Ohio State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

“Hopefully they learned they all need to improve,” said Coach Heffernan. “They’ll all get better with their experience at this event.”

The strongest performance of the day came from heavyweight Duece Rachal, who entered the tournament with a 7-4 record on the season. After receiving an opening round bye in the championship bracket, Rachal lost to Garrett Ryan (Columbia) by major decision, 14-4. Rachal bounced back in impressive fashion in his first consolation round, pinning Northern Illinois’ Jake Cochrane in 55 seconds. The fall was Rachal’s sixth of the season. The redshirt-freshman made it back-to-back wins when he won a close battle with Brock Horwath (Wisconsin), 4-2. However, Rachal’s run came to an end against Maryland’s Dawson Peck who pinned him (3:23).

After going 3-2 in Reno, Danny Hicks suited up again for the Illini on Tuesday, but suffered a close defeat at the hands of Ben Schwery (South Dakota State), 3-1. After receiving a bye in the consolation bracket, Hicks fell to Dane Pestano (Iowa State) by a decision of 10-4.

Five Illini freshmen made their Midlands debut today, each of them wrestling unattached. At 141 pounds, Mousa Jodeh dropped two matches, the first to Steve Bleise (Northern Illinois) and the second to Trevor Jauch (Northern Iowa). Following Jodeh at 149 pounds, Eric Barone also finished the day 0-2 with a close loss by decision to Gabe Moreno (Iowa State), and then a defeat at the hands of Sam Melikian (NC State).

The Orange and Blue had two representatives at 157 pounds. However, Tim McCarthy and Carver James both finished their Midlands competition with an 0-2 record. James hung tough into the second period with both John Boyle (American) and Jordan Kutler (Lehigh), but eventually fell to both of them.

Eleven Scarlet Knights still alive as RU sits in third place with 56.5 team points

EVANSTON, Ill. (Dec. 29, 2015) – No. 8 Rutgers wrestling wrapped up day one of the 53rd Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in third place with 56.5 team points. Two Scarlet Knights – 133-pounder Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.) and 197-pounder Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasant, N.J.) – advanced to the semifinals in their brackets and will vie for the championship finals Wednesday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Eleven Scarlet Knights survived and advanced past the opening two sessions, with nine still alive in wrestle-backs. Four grapplers made runs to the quarterfinals before being knocked into consolations, including No. 8-seed Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) at 149 pounds, top-seeded 165-pounder Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.), No. 9-seed Phil Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) at 174 pounds, and No. 5-seeded heavyweight Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.).

Competing in his second Midlands Championships, Giraldo grinded out a 3-1 win against Northwestern’s Dominick Malone to become the first RU quarterfinalist of the day. The victory followed a commanding 10-2 major decision vs. Dakota Leach (SIU-Edwardsville).

Tied with No. 2-seeded Earl Hall (Iowa State) late, Girlado got the escape he needed and held the 2014 All-American off in a 5-4 win. The upset victory was No. 20-ranked Giraldo’s first over a ranked opponent this season, with Hall holding the No. 5 spot in the most recent Intermat poll.

Giraldo (10-5) will match up with No. 6-seed Josh Alber (Northern Iowa) Wednesday in the semifinals. Alber edged Giraldo, 3-1, earlier this season at the Northeast Duals.

Hrymack used an escape and ankle pick as the third period dwindled to close out an 11-5 win against Josh DaSilveira (Arizona State) in the quarterfinals. Hrymack (10-5) faces Derek White (Nebraska) Wednesday in the semifinals.

125-pounder Sean McCabe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) recovered with back-to-back wins after a second-round loss to remain in contention in consolations.

No. 3-seeded Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N .J.) was upset by the unattached Matthew Kolodzik at 141 pounds. Ashnault responded with a pair of wins and will continue in wrestle-backs Wednesday afternoon.

At 149 pounds, Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) wrapped up his day with a 17-11 win in a slugfest against No. 6-seeded Matthew Kraus (Arizona State). It was Dippery’s first win over a ranked foe this season, with Kraus ranking No. 15 in the most recent top 20.

157-pounder Richie Lewis (Toms River, N.J.) and 184-pounder Nicholas Gravina (Allendale, N.J.) ended their days with third-period pins to move on in their brackets.

Scott DelVecchio (Toms River, N.J.), John Van Brill (Mullica Hill, N.J.), Jordan Pagano (South Brunswick, N.J.), and Anthony Pafumi (Westfield, N.J.) were eliminated from the tournament Tuesday.

Session III of the 53rd Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Fans can watch all mats via BTN Plus, with brackets and results provided by TrackWrestling. The championship finals begin at 9 p.m. ET Wednesday and will air live on Big Ten Network.

Eagles Conclude Opening Day at Midlands Championships

Boyle, Wightman advance to semifinals

EVANSTON, Ill. – Seniors John Boyle and Mitchell Wightman each won their quarterfinal matches to lead the American University wrestling team on the first day of competition at the 53rd-annual Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern.

With their wins on Tuesday evening, Boyle and Wightman each advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday and assured top-six finishes in their respective weight classes.

Boyle, seeded fourth at 157 pounds, compiled a 4-0 record on Tuesday, scoring a major decision, a fall and a decision in his first three bouts. He then earned a 3-1 sudden victory win over Northern Iowa’s Bryce Steiert to earn a spot in the semifinals.

Boyle, who placed second at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational earlier this month, faces sixth-ranked Cody Pack of South Dakota in tomorrow’s semifinal match.

Wightman, unseeded at 165 pounds, battled to a tiebreaker in his first match before scoring a major upset in the second round, defeating second-seed Austin Wilson of Nebraska, 6-2. Wightman then earned an 8-4 decision over 10th-seed Seth Thomas of Oregon State to advance to the semifinals, where he will face Purdue’s Chad Welch, seeded third in the tournament.

Also advancing to the second day of competition for the Eagles was redshirt senior Tyler Scotton, who remains alive in the consolation bracket at 141 pounds.

Scotton won a pair of decisions to open the day before dropping a major decision to second-seed Andrew Long. However, Scotton came back with two victories in the consolation bracket, including a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Northern Iowa’s Jake Koethe.

Scotton, who needs at least one more win to secure a spot on the podium, will open action on Wednesday versus sixth-seed Rick Durso of Franklin & Marshall.

Competition continues at the Midlands Championships tomorrow beginning at noon (CT), while the finals are slated to begin at 8 p.m.

NU WRESTLING: Tsirtsis to Wrestle in #Midlands53 Semifinals Tomorrow

Updated #Midlands53 Brackets

Session I Recap
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern junior and defending Midlands champion Jason Tsirtsis will vie for a second straight trip to the finals after advancing to the semifinals during Session II Tuesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The second-seeded Tsirtsis will meet third-seeded Alexander Richardson of Old Dominion.
"Jason continued to look better in each match he wrestled today," interim head coach Matt Storniolo said. "He is a great competitor, and I am excited to see him open up in his semifinal match tomorrow.”
Tsirtsis earned his spot among the final four wrestlers at 149 lbs. with an 8-2 decision over Iowa State's Gabe Moreno, the 16th-ranked wrestler in the country. He went 3-0 on the day and outscored his opponents 30-7.
Dominick Malone was also impressive in the second session, cruising past both of his opponents in dominant fashion. The 133-pounder pinned Carlos Herrera of CSU Bakersfield in just 58 seconds and then went on to tech fall Purdue's Luke Welch in his next match, 16-0, just seconds into the second period.
Mitch Sliga advanced to Wednesday's Session III with a pair of consolation wins as well, taking down Columbia's Zack Fernandez, the tournament's 10th seed, by a 2-1 score before narrowly defeating Northern Iowa's Drew Foster, 4-2. Sliga is one win away from guaranteeing himself a spot on the podium.
"I am extremely proud of the way our guys battled in the consolation matches," Storniolo said. "We were trailing late in several matches, and instead of hanging their heads, our guys fought hard and found ways to win. That is what it is all about.”
Session III of the 53rd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships begins at noon tomorrow. The finals will begin at 8 p.m. and be televised live on Big Ten Network.

EVANSTON, Ill. – Josh Alber will be competing for a Midlands Championships title at 133 pounds when wrestling resumes tomorrow at noon.

Five more Panthers are still in the hunt for a third-place finish:
  • 149 pounds – Max Thomsen
  • 157 pounds – Bryce Steiert
  • 174 pounds – Jacob Holschlag and Taylor Lujan
  • 285 pounds – Blaize Cabell

Alber, seeded sixth, posted a major decision in his first round this morning and grabbed two more decisions before the day ended. He will face No. 20 Anthony Giraldo of Rutgers in the semifinals. Alber beat Giraldo 3-1 at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals mid-November.

Two unranked freshmen knocked off top-20 opponents in the first round of action this morning. Steiert, the first true freshman to start for the Panthers since 2010, beat No. 18 Tyler Berger of Wisconsin in addition to notching a major decision win over Cole Walter of Lehigh.

No. 12 seed Steiert remains unranked by Intermat but has beaten No. 12 Dylan Cottrell of West Virginia and then-ranked No. 17 Eleazar DeLuca of Northern Colorado. He was pushed into the consolation round with a 3-1 loss in sudden victory to No. 11 John Boyle of American University.

Freshman Holschlag is wrestling unattached and was set to redshirt this season. He knocked off No. 16 Matt Reed of Oklahoma in a 5-2 decision. Reed earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament after taking third at the Big 12 Championships last season. Holschlag fell in a 9-5 decision to #13 Jonathan Schleifer of Princeton.

No. 6 seed Lujan also was expected to redshirt this season for the Panthers. He notched a tech fall and major decision in the first session today wrestling unattached. He lost 6-5 to No. 12 Micah Barnes of Nebraska to be bumped into the consolation round.

Thomsen took a blow early in the tournament when he was edged out by riding time. No. 3 Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern racked up more than two minutes of riding time to go up 4-3. Tsirtsis is a two-time All-American, winning as a redshirt freshman and taking third last year.

BUMPED
No. 12 Cooper Moore was seeded fifth and started strong with a tech fall. However, injury forced him to end his second match early and medically forfeit the remainder of his matches.
Senior Trevor Jauch was seeded eighth and notched two pins before elimination.

Hawkeyes Send 7 to Semifinals

7 wrestlers advance to semifinals at the Midlands Championships.

EVANSTON, Illinois -- The University of Iowa wrestling team posted a 7-3 record in the quarterfinal round of the Midlands Championship on Tuesday night. The Hawkeyes have individual title hopes in seven weights, with all No. 1 seeded wrestlers remaining en route to the championships.

Iowa sits in first place with 96 points. Nebraska is a distant second with 78 points, followed by Rutgers (62), North Carolina State (49.5), and Northwestern (42.5).

"It's up, then it's down, but it's a lot more up than down," said UI head coach Tom Brands. "Advancing seven wrestlers is good, even with takedowns at what seems like a premium right now".

First-seeded Thomas Gilman continued to rake in bonus points for the Hawkeyes, delivering a pin to No. 8 Keegan Calkins (Oregon State) at 2:53. The fall is Gilman's fifth of the season and 14th overall.

"Gilman, every time he comes out tries to wrestle harder and he has wrestled harder", Brands said of the 125 pounder. "That match was like an avalanche for that guy and that's what we've got to have. That seems to be Gilman's best chance to dominate and he has, so good for him".

Defending champion Cory Clark secured a semifinal berth for the second consecutive year at 133 pounds. Clark collected a 7-1 decision over Columbia's Angelo Amenta, recording two takedowns to continue his run towards the finals.

Brandon Sorensen, seeded first at 149, advances to the semifinals for the third time in as many years at the Midlands. The sophomore posted a 9-5 decision against eighth-seeded Ken Theobald, wrestling unattached from Rutgers.

Alex Meyer (174) collected a 3-1 decision over #9 Phil Bakuckas (Rutgers) and Sammy Brooks (184) used a 5-2 decision against #5 Hayden Zillmer (North Dakota State) to continue into the semifinal matches.

Senior Nathan Burak continues his advancement towards consecutive titles at 197, earning a spot in the semifinals with an 8-2 decision over North Carolina State's eighth seeded Michael Boykin. The victory pushes Burak's season record to 10-0 on the season.

Continuing his streak of firsts, Sam Stoll will be making his Midlands semifinals debut at heavyweight after collecting a tight 2-0 decision victory over fifth-ranked Billy Smith (Rutgers).

"The biggest thing in tournaments like these is getting ready for multiple matches and being ready for whatever is thrown at you," Brands said. "If you're looking too far ahead, you could be the one that gets upset so you want to be focused one match at a time and keep things going."

Session III of the Midlands Championships is set to begin at 12 p.m. (CT) Wednesday. Updated team standings and complete tournament brackets are available throughout the tournament at nusports.com and on trackwrestling.com.

Rider Best-Ever 5th at Midlands

Best-Ever Four Broncs Place

EVANSTON, ILLINOIS— The Broncs won 27 of 43 bouts and came home with four place-winners, including two thirds, a sixth and an eighth, to finish a best-ever fifth at the 53rd Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, held Tuesday and Wednesday at Northwestern University.

“The kids wrestled hard,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor, “and they wrestled well. This was the first time we placed four, first time we had two third place finishers, first time we finished as high as fifth. I’m happy about all of that.”

Rider accomplished all of this with only eight wrestlers. “We didn’t have a 125 or 133 and on top of that our trip out here was delayed 10 hours on the run way,” Taylor said. “We were in bed at 2am and up at 5:30am to get ready to compete. There was a lot of adversity and sometimes it makes you stronger. The kids bought into it and had a great tournament.”

The Midlands features over 400 wrestlers and 42 teams, including #3 Iowa, #8 NC State, #9 Nebraska, #11 Old Dominion, #12 Illinois, #13 Oklahoma, #15 Wisconsin, #17 Kent State, #20 Lehigh and #23 Northern Iowa.

Last year Rider was ranked 10th in the nation and placed 13th at Midlands.

For Rider, sophomore Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), the sixth seed at 157, placed third, winning six of seven matches.

In the battle for third place, Walsh won a 10-1 major decision over #8 Richie Lewis of Rutgers.

Earlier on Wednesday Walsh lost 6-4 in the semifinals in sudden victory to the #2 seed and eventual champion, Thomas Grant of North Carolina State. In consolation semifinals Walsh defeated #11 Greg Flournoy of George Mason 4-1.

On Tuesday Walsh went 4-0 with two pins, including one over the #3 seed in the quarterfinals. He also defeated the #11 seed.

Walsh is now 18-5 in three trips to Midlands, placing for the third time, also a first for a Bronc.

Senior Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.), the eighth seed at 165, placed third, winning six of seven matches. In the battle for third place Brennan defeated M Wightman of American 6-2. On Wednesday Brennan defeated #9 Adam Fierro of Cal Bakersfield 3-2 in the consolation semifinals.

Brennan pinned Tyler Rill of Buffalo in 4:45 and defeated #10 Seth Thomas of Oregon State 6-4 Wednesday in consolations. Brennan went 3-1 on Tuesday.

Sophomore B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), the fifth seed at 149, placed sixth, winning four of six matches.

In the battle for fifth place, Clagon was a medical forfeit to Mike Kemerer of Iowa. “He will be alright,” Taylor said of his returning All-American. “”It wasn’t worth taking the chance with the Virginia Duals coming up. His shoulder is pretty sore.”

In the consolation semifinals on Wednesday Clagon lost 5-0 to #3 Alex Richardson of ODU. Earlier on Wednesday Clagon defeated #8 Ken Theobald of Rutgers 4-3 in overtime and defeated #14 Tyson Dippery of Rutgers 6-4.

Clagon went 3-1 on Tuesday with two falls, including a pin over the #12 seed. Clagon’s lone loss on Tuesday was in the quarterfinals 7-6 to #4 Jake Sueflohn of Nebraska in the quarterfinals.

Junior Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy), the 13th seed at 197, placed eighth, winning four of seven matches. In the battle for seventh place Wolfe lost 7-3 to #3 Nate Rotert of South Dakota State. “That was a real tough match,” Taylor said.

Wolfe defeated Josh DaSilveria of Arizona State 9-2 in consolations Wednesday before losing to #2 Reuben Franklin of Cal Bakersfield 4-2. Wolfe went 3-1 on Tuesday.

The only Bronc to ever win a Midlands Championship is current associate head coach John Hangey, who won his weight class in 1994 as a post-graduate. Rider Hall of Famer Chad Liott reached the Midlands finals in 1999 and Rider All-American Doug Umbehauer placed second in 2007 and third at Midlands in 2009.

The Broncs return to the mats January 8-9 at the Virginia Duals. “We’re going to need everybody for the Virginia Duals,” Taylor said. “That tournament will again be very tough.”

Martin is currently 18-2 this season while wrestling unattached in open tournaments. He is a junior freestyle national champion who won 171 matches over four years at the McDonough School. Martin will wrestle at 174 lbs.

STIEBER EXPECTED BACK SOON
In addition to adding Martin to their lineup, the Buckeyes also expect Hunter Stieber, an All-American for the Buckeyes in 2013-14 at 149 lbs., to make his season debut shortly. Stieber, recovering from offseason surgery, has a career record of 85-14 was injured much of last year but returned for the Big Ten and NCAA Championships. At Big Ten’s, he scored key points for the Buckeyes while advancing to the 149-pound semifinals. In the quarterfinal round, his reversal as time expired in the third period secured a 5-4 decision.

THREE QUALIFY FOR U.S. OYLMPIC TEAM TRIALS
Logan Stieber, Nathan Tomasello and Reece Humphrey all punched their ticket for a trip to Iowa City, Iowa for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials by finishing in the top seven of their respective weight classes two weeks ago at the U.S. Senior Nationals/Olympic Trials Qualifier. They will officially continue on their Road to Rio later in 2016.

Stieber was second at 65kg, Humphrey finished third (65kg) while Tomasello was fifth at 57kg. The trio combined for seven tech falls in the 13 matches that they won.

Two Buckeyes – one current and one former – have already qualified for the Trials: Kyle Snyder (96kg) and JD Bergman (96kg). Bergman won the title this past November at the Bill Farrell/New York AC International while Snyder’s explosion onto the freestyle scene has been well-documented – in the last six months, he has won the US Open, Pan Am Games, World Team Trials and became the youngest American to earn gold at the World Championships.

SCOUTING ILLINOIS
Ranked 11th in this week’s USA Today/NWCA Poll, Illinois brings an 8-0 record into Sunday’s dual. The Illini have six wrestlers ranked in the Top 20 of their respective weight classes and four inside the Top-10. No. 1 Isaiah Martinez (14-0), No. 3 Zane Richards (13-0), No. 9 Steven Rodrigues (13-0) and No. 4 Zac Brunson (13-0) have combined for a perfect 53-0 record through the season's first two months. Martinez was the national championship at 157 pounds last year, becoming the first undefeated freshman to win NCAA title since Cael Sanderson (Iowa State, 1999).

Release: 01/02/2016

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Freshman Joey McKenna finished as the runner-up at 141 pounds in the 2016 Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tennessee, while four other Cardinal placed in the tournament.

As a team, Stanford finished ninth with 59.5 points. Penn State won the team race with 183 points, while Oklahoma State (158 points) and Lehigh (104.5 point) rounded out the top 3.

McKenna, who is ranked fourth nationally, went 4-0 in the tournament to reach the finals, where he suffered his first loss of the season to top-ranked Dean Heil of Oklahoma State. Tied 1-1 after regulation, McKenna was called for a stalling point in the first tiebreaker which proved to be the difference for Heil, who was able to ride out McKenna in the second tiebreaker.

McKenna is just the second Cardinal wrestler to reach the finals of the Southern Scuffle, joining three-time All-American Tanner Gardner who did so in 2006. The rookie is 11-1 on the season.

Redshirt freshman Paul Fox (149 pounds) and redshirt sophomore Nathan Butler (285 pounds) finished seventh, while redshirt sophomores Connor Schram (125 pounds) and Garet Krohn (184 pounds) took eighth.

Up next, Stanford hosts Cal Baptist on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. PT in Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal will then wrestle at San Francisco State and Menlo College on Sunday, Jan. 10.

Cimato Earns a Fourth Place Finish at the Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Drexel Wrestling's Matthew Cimato earned a fourth place finish at the 2016 Southern Scuffle in the 149-pound bracket. Cimato was one of four Dragons that advanced to the second day of competition at the tournament hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Cimato started off day two with a win over Central Michigan's Justin Oliver in the 149 quarterfinals after a win by forfeit and two decisions on the first day made him one of the final eight competiting in the championship round. In the semifinals, Cimato was put up against the No. 1 ranked Zain Retherford of Penn State. A 13-3 major decision in favor of Retherford sent Cimato to the consolations, where he battled back with a 3-2 win over No. 12 Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State. In the third place match, Cimato took on Oliver of Central Michigan again and while the two were neck-and-neck through two periods, Cimato would ultimately fall by a score of 5-2 and finish in fourth place on the tournament.

David Pearce started competition on Saturday with a major decision over Jason Delacruz of Cal Poly in his first match in the 133 consolations. He was halted, however, in his next match as Northern Colorado's Rico Montoya defeated him, 5-1.

Franco Ferraina also entered the wrestlebacks at 133 to open competition on Saturday. He faced Drew Walker of Campbell, but fell by technical fall to conclude his competition in the tournament.

Goodhart, the fourth Dragon to move on to the second day of competition at the Southern Scuffle, started Saturday off with a 5-2 decision over Boyce Cornwell of Gardner Webb. In his next match, however, Goodhart fell to Cary Miller of Appalachian State by a 5-3 deficit.

The Dragons return to action on January 15 as they will travel to Annapolis, Md. to face EIWA opponent Navy. The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m.

Four Gophers Place at Southern Scuffle

Led by Brett Pfarr’s second-place finish at 197 pounds, Minnesota takes sixth at prestigious in-season tournament

Against one of the best fields of any in-season tournament, Minnesota placed four wrestlers at this weekend’s Southern Scuffle. No. 5 Brett Pfarr led the way, outwrestling his seed and placing second at 197, while No. 6 Michael Kroells finished third at 285, No. 11 Tommy Thorn finished fifth at 141 and Sam Brancale finished eighth at 133.

As a team, Minnesota finished sixth, with 73 team points. Penn State took home the team title, followed by Oklahoma State, Lehigh, North Carolina, Cornell and then the Gophers.

Throughout his two days in Chattanooga, and as he has all season, Pfarr looked like one of the nation’s best at 197 pounds. On Saturday, Pfarr knocked off No. 15 John Bolich (Lehigh) by major decision, 10-2, in the quarterfinals before upsetting No. 3 Conner Hartmann (Duke), 4-3, in the semis. With those victories, Pfarr added to his team-high total for ranked wins, now owning seven on the season. In the final, Pfarr fell to No. 1 Morgan McIntosh (Penn State). The defeat was only the second this season for Pfarr. Those losses have come to the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked wrestlers in the nation.

After opening his day with a major decision in the quarterfinals, Kroells was bounced to the backside of the bracket by No. 13 Denzel Dejournette (Appalachian State) in a 5-3 semifinal decision. Kroells rebounded from that loss to defeat the No. 10 and No. 14 ranked wrestlers to claim third place and finish the tournament with a 5-1 record.

Thorn found himself wrestling for fifth place after a pair of narrow losses, the second a one-point defeat against Joey Ward (North Carolina) that ended with a sequence where Thorn narrowly missed scoring a match-winning takedown in the final seconds. Thorn dominated No. 16 Zachary Horan (Central Michigan), 10-2, in the fifth-place match.

Following a defeat in the quarterfinals to top-ranked Nahshon Garrett (Cornell), Brancale clinched a top-eight finish with a third-period pin in his first consolation match of the weekend. Brancale finished eighth after a 9-5 loss to Garth Yenter (Michigan State) in the seventh-place match.

Four Minnesota wrestlers fell just shy of placing in the event with losses in Round of 12 consolation matches, the final round before wrestlers clinch top-eight placement.

Two of those wrestlers came to the backside of the bracket after losing 125-pound quarterfinal bouts. Steve Polakowski significantly outwrestled his seed by reaching the quarterfinals, but fell in consecutive matches in the quarters and Round of 12. The same fate befell his teammate, Ethan Lizak, who lost to No. 5 Eddie Klimara (Oklahoma State) and No. 12 Zeke Moisey (West Virginia) after advancing to the quarterfinals with his performance yesterday. Lizak, wrestling unattached, also outperformed his seeding.

In addition to that pair, 157-pounder Brandon Kingsley fell in the Round of 12 for the second time in as many career appearances at the Southern Scuffle. Kingsley began his day with a first-period pin of Christopher Dowdy (Cornell) and added a 7-3 decision before he was eliminated from the tournament. Similarly, Nick Wanzek went 2-1 in 174-pound consolation matches on Saturday, matching Kingsley’s first-period pin in his opening match of the day and adding an 8-0 major decision before his Round of 12 defeat.

Four more Gophers wrestled into Saturday but fell earlier in the day during consolation rounds: Skyler Petry (125 pounds), Fredy Stroker (149), Larry Early III (157) and Brandon Krone (165).

Full match-by-match results from today’s action can be found at: z.umn.edu/wrsc2

As the Southern Scuffle concluded on Saturday evening, so too did Minnesota’s in-season tournament schedule. Minnesota will return to dual action for the remainder of the regular season before jumping into postseason tournament action in March. The Gophers’ next contest is this coming Friday, when they will host the Maryland Terrapins at the Sports Pavilion. That match is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Central and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

Hartmann, Mitch Finesilver Land on Podium at Scuffle

January 2, 2016

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—A pair of Duke wrestlers landed on the podium at the 2016 Defense Soap & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle with redshirt senior Conner Hartmann leading the way with a third-place finish at 197 pounds. Mitch Finesilver joined Hartmann with a fifth-place showing at 149 pounds.

Duke finished 12th overall with 43.5 points, the highest finish at the Southern Scuffle in program history. It is a six-spot and 11-point improvement from a year ago.

The Blue Devils opened the day in outstanding fashion, going 5-2 in the first matches of day two. Three of the five wins came over ranked opponents, including a second victory of the year for Jake Faust over No. 9 Jim Wilson. Faust dominated Stanford’s Wilson in a 6-1 victory.

Mitch Finesilver defeated 20th-ranked Patricio Lugo of Edinboro 3-1 to advance to the semifinals in his first Southern Scuffle appearance, while Brian Dorsey upset No. 17 Brian Harvey of Army West Point in an 11-10 thriller. Zach Finesilver needed just 2:51 to pin Dylan Realbuto of Cornell, while Hartmann cruised past Parker Hines 13-0.

Faust and Dorsey both saw their days ended in the next round. Zach Finesilver fell to Javier Gasca in an 8-7 heartbreaker to finish his first Southern Scuffle showing with a 3-2 record.

Mitch and Hartmann also both suffered semifinal setbacks to land in the consolation brackets. After a tough 8-6 loss in the consolation semifinal, Mitch rebounded in a big way to beat No. 12 Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State to take fifth place overall. The win was the third ranked victory for the sophomore 149-pounder.

Hartmann, after losing on a late takedown by No. 5 Brett Pfarr in the semifinals, dominated in his final two bouts. He defeated No. 10 Zach Nye of Virginia with ease at 5-0 and turned in an outstanding third period of riding to beat eighth-ranked Jake Smith of West Virginia. Hartmann has just one loss this season as he heads into a busy January.

The Blue Devils open ACC wrestling action Jan. 6 when it hosts No. 3 NC State. First match is at 7 p.m., and will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Noon Becomes First Northern Colorado Placer at Southern Scuffle

Trent Noon finished seventh overall at 197 pounds at the 2016 Southern Scuffle

Final BracketsDay One Recap

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.Trent Noon highlighted the Bears' Southern Scuffle on Saturday, earning a seventh place finish to be the first Northern Colorado wrestler to place at the tournament in program history.

Overall, the Bears finished 23rdout of 31 teams, with 26.5 team points, tying the program's highest finish (23rdin 2013). Winning the team race was #1 Penn State with 183 points, #2 Oklahoma State with 158 points, and #14 Lehigh with 104.5 points.

"We wrestled pretty well," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "You can definitely see the improvement this team is making."

Noon earned three straight wins on the day to become the first UNC wrestler to place at the Scuffle since the team started attending the tournament in 2013. A 2-0 decision over Penn's Mattiace kicked off his day, followed by one of two pins for the Bears on the day over Sam Wheeler of Cleveland State. Another decision win (5-0) moved him into the top-eight status, but a loss to Zach Nye of Virginia moved him down in the bracket, eliminating his chances of placing higher than seventh.

In his seventh place match, Noon faced Parker Hines of Air Force to close out the tournament for the Bears. With two takedowns, an escape, and a riding time point, Noon took the seventh place finish with a 6-3 decision win.

"Trent wrestled well and finished his tournament the right way. We are very proud of the progress he is making overall and in the fact that he is the first placer the program has seen at this tournament."

In his first Scuffle appearance, Rico Montoya made his way through the first day of the tournament going 2-1 overall. On day two, he kicked off the day with a huge pin over Appalachian State's Jacob Grigg, and edged out David Pearce of Drexel to advance to the blood round. In a rematch from earlier in the season with Josh Martinez (Air Force), Montoya fought hard, but lost his lead late in the third period to be knocked out of the tournament with an overall record of 4-2.

Timmy Boxhad a 3-1 day on Friday, also earning a spot in the Saturday morning matches. He picked up a pair of decision wins to advance to the placement round, but fell short against Justin Oliver of Central Michigan, ending his Scuffle outing 5-2 overall.

"Rico Montoya and Timmy Box both made some real progress in this tournament, both coming up just shy of placing. Their confidence is where it needs to be moving forward."

Seven of the twelve Northern Colorado wrestlers won matches between the two days of the tournament, with 18 wins between them overall.

The Bear squad has almost two weeks off before their next competition – a pair of duals in Greeley on January 15th and against South Dakota State and North Dakota State, respectively.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Mark Martin edged Andre Lee 2-1 in the final winner-take-all match of the night at 197 lbs. to secure No. 6 Ohio State’s 22-17 win over No. 11 and previously unbeaten Illinois Sunday afternoon at Huff Hall in Champaign, Ill. The Buckeyes, who win six of 10 matches, improve to 5-1 overall, 2-1 in the Big Ten while the Illini are 8-1, 0-1.

THE SHORT STORY
With Ohio State ahead 19-17 after Jack Rozema lost a 15-6 major decision at 184 pounds, the fate of Sunday’s dual came down to Martin vs. Lee at 197 lbs. After a scoreless first quarter, Lee scored the first point of the match on an escape to begin the second period and then held that lead headed into the final two minutes. But as is their mantra, the Buckeyes won the third, as Martin escaped to tie it at 1-1 and then scored the decisive point when Lee was called for locked hands. He made that lead stand up for the rest of the period and improved to 14-4 on the year.

STARS OF THE AFTERNOON
197: Mark Martin decision over Andrew Lee, 2-1
165: No. 2 Bo Jordan won by decision over No. 6 Steven Rodriguez, 6-3
174: Myles Martin tech fall over Isaac Reinemann, 22-7
141: No. 9 Micah Jordan decision over Brock Ervin, 6-3
125: No. 1 Nathan Tomasello tech fall over Francis Edelen, 18-3
285: Thomas Haines decision over No. 13 Brooks Black, 3-2

MARTIN MAKES BANG IN DEBUT
Highly-touted freshman Myles Martin, one of the top-ranked pound for pound recruits in the nation, did in his starting debut what he’s been all season – scored points and scored them often. Martin earned a 22-7 tech fall at 174 pounds over Isaac Reinemann. He scored two takedowns and a two point near fall in the first period to build a 7-1 lead and then broke it open in the second with four more takedowns and the match eventually ended in the third when Reinemann was called for stalling. It was Martin’s 14th win this year via bonus points and gave Ohio State a 19-13 lead.

TOP 10 MATCH-UP AT 165
In one of two matches on the day that featured a pair of wrestlers ranked in the top 10, No. 2 Bo Jordan stayed unbeaten with a hard-fought 6-3 decision over sixth-ranked Steven Rodrigues. Jordan scored first with a takedown and eventually pushed his head to 5-0 late in the second before Rodrigues scored a reversal to cut the deficit to 5-2. Rodrigues scored the only point of the third period on an escape, but Jordan racked up enough riding time to tack on a bonus point. Jordan improves to 8-0 this year while Rodrigues is 13-1. The win also gave the Buckeyes the lead in the dual for good at 14-13.

HAINES ALSO MAKES DEBUT
The dual started at heavyweight with the starting debut of redshirt freshman Thomas Haines, a four-time Pennsylvania state champion. Haines scored a key 3-2 decision over 13th-ranked Brooks Black, an NCAA qualifier in 2015. Haines took a 1-0 lead into the third period thanks to a second-period escape, and Black tied the match at 2-2 on a reversal late in the third, but Haines escaped and then scored the decisive point via riding time. He’s 12-2 on the season.

TOMASELLO EXTENDS THE LEAD
Top-ranked Nathan Tomasello (11-0) extended Ohio State’s early lead to 8-0 when he won his 29th straight match dating back to last year, needing just five minutes to tech fall Francis Edelen, 18-3. The key stretch came in the first period when Tomasello scored seven points on a takedown and five-point near fall.

M. JORDAN PICKS UP WIN NO. 13
Like his brother Bo, Micah Jordan also gritted out a 6-3 decision to improve his 2015-16 mark to 13-1. His win at 141 lbs. over Brock Ervin gave Ohio State an early 11-3 edge after four matches and was triggered by a strong third period. Tied a 3-3 entering the final two minutes, Jordan escaped for a 4-3 and then scored two off a low single for the final 6-3 margin.

ILLINI WINNERS
Illinois won at 133, 149, 157 and 184 pounds. At 157, Jake Ryan suffered his first loss of the year against top-ranked and defending national champion Isaiah Martinez. Third-ranked Zane Richards topped Johnni DiJulius, 8-3, while Kyle Langenderfer won by tech fall at 149 over Matt Davis. Jack Rozema was also beaten by Jeffrey Koepke at 184.
