No. 13 Ohio State Finishes Third at NWCA National Duals

Falling to No. 1 Minnesota, 25-10, in semifinals, Buckeyes rebound with 23-16 victory vs. No. 11 Oklahoma in third-place bout

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? After dropping its semifinal match to No. 1 Minnesota, 25-10, the 13th-ranked Ohio State wrestling team answered with a 23-16 victory vs. No. 11 Oklahoma to finish third in the NWCA National Duals at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio, Monday. The Buckeyes improve to 12-5 overall (4-4 Big Ten).

Up next, Ohio State will host No. 16 Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. John Arena. Prior to the match, seniors Alex Gordon, Joe Grandominico, Nick Heflin, Ian Paddock, Josh Whitt, Colton Bowers (manager) and Cassandra Prezzia (manager) will be recognized in the Buckeyes' final home match of the 2013-14 season.

In the third-place bout vs. the Sooners Monday, the Scarlet and Gray reeled off six wins en route to its Top 3 finish in front of their home crowd in Columbus. Ohio State quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead thanks to a 4:17 pin by redshirt-freshman Nick Roberts over Sean Williams in the 125-pound match up. Not long after, redshirt-sophomore and ninth-ranked Johnni DiJulius increased Ohio State's lead to 9-0 following his 6-3 decision over No. 7 Cody Brewer in the 133-pound bout. In the Top 10 match-up, DiJulius bettered his 2-1 lead entering the third period by scoring a reversal and taking advantage of a third-called caution on Brewer. With a riding time advantage of 2:21 and limiting Brewer to just an escape and reversal, DiJulius secured the 6-3 win.

Up next at 149 pounds, redshirt-junior and No. 3 Logan Stieber recorded his 21st bonus-point victory of the season after posting an 18-3 technical fall over Nick Lester. With the Buckeyes up 14-0, the Sooners earned their first win of the match when No. 2 Kendric Maple beat No. 20 and senior Ian Paddock, 13-3, at 149 pounds.

The rest of the way, Ohio State and Oklahoma traded victories, including a 6-1 win by redshirt-junior Randy Languis over Dryden Dennis. Restricting Dennis to just an escape, Languis opened the bout with a takedown in the first period and followed with a final takedown, escape and riding time of 1:59.

No. 13 and sophomore Mark Martin used a takedown and a 1:23 of riding time to beat Derek Geiges, 3-0, in the 174-pound match-up, while senior 197-pounder and No. 8 Nick Heflin won a 6-3 decision vs. No. 5 Travis Rutt. With the match tied at 3-3, Heflin's escape and takedown in the third period was enough for him to hold on to the win.

In other matches, Buckeye senior Joe Grandominico lost a 6-1 decision to Clark Glass. Moving up a weight class to 184 pounds, No. 1 (174 pounds) Andrew Howe handed redshirt-freshman Josh Fox a 22-8 loss. In the final match of the evening for Ohio State, Buckeye heavyweight Kosta Karageorge lost, 15-0, to Zach Merrill.

Against the Gophers earlier in the day, the Buckeyes jumped out to a 3-0 lead after redshirt-freshman Nick Roberts defeated Samuel Brancale, 9-7, in the 125-pound bout. Two matches later at 141 pounds, a Top 5 match-up ensued between Logan Stieber, who is No. 3, and No. 5 Chris Dardanes. Stieber, a redshirt-junior, recorded an 11-0 major decision over Dardanes to lift the Scarlet and Gray to a 6-3 lead. Stieber quickly secured himself five points on a takedown and 3-point nearfall in the first period vs. Dardanes. The Monroeville, Ohio, native then opened the second period with an escape and takedown for an 8-0 lead. A final takedown and riding time of 2:19 in the third period gave the Buckeye an 11-0 win.

Previously, redshirt-sophomore and eighth-ranked Johnni DiJulius dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 8 David Thorn. Trailing, 4-3, at the end of the first period, DiJulius gave up a reversal and was called for his second stall of the match before scoring an escape to make the score 7-4 in Thorn's favor. In the third period, DiJulius was only able to score an escape before dropping the match.

Ohio State would go on to drop six of the next seven matches, including a trio of decisions at 149, 157 and 165 pounds. In the 149-pound match up, senior and No. 20 Ian Paddock dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 3 Nick Dardanes. Paddock only trailed 4-2 at the end of the second period, but an escape by Dardanes and riding time of 1:03 secured the Gopher's victory.

At 157 pounds, redshirt-junior Randy Languis suffered an 8-4 setback to No. 5 Dylan Ness. Languis trailed Ness by one (5-4) at the end of the first period, but Ness was able to score an escape and takedown in the remaining periods for the win.

Senior Joe Grandominico could not overcome a 5-0 deficit at the end of the second period and dropped an 8-2 decision to Daniel Zilverberg.

Senior and eighth-ranked Nick Heflin scored the Buckeyes' final team points of the match with his 8-4 decision over Scott Schiller. Heflin took a 5-3 lead into the second period and increased his advantage to 8-3 on an escape and takedown in the middle stanza. The Buckeye from Massillon, Ohio, limited Schiller to just an escape in the third period for the victory.

In other Buckeye action, freshman and 174-pounder Jacob Bresciani lost to No. 6 Logan Storley, 15-0, while redshirt-freshman Josh Fox (184 pounds) dropped a 12-3 major decision to No. 8 Kevin Steinhaus. Redshirt-freshman and heavyweight Nick Tavanello fell, 13-3, to Michael Kroellis.

Five of the Cowboys' starters have earned bonus points in at least half of their wins. Of sophomore Eddie Klimara's wins at 125 pounds, 80 percent have resulted in bonus points, including five falls, six major decisions and one technical fall. The team's most prolific pinners, Alex Dieringer (157) and Jordan Rogers (184/197), have each tallied 14 bonus point wins, including nine pins for Dieringer and 11 pins for Rogers. Chris Perry (174) has earned 13 bonus-point wins out of his 21 wins and Nolan Boyd (184/197) has collected 14 out of his 27 wins.

Catching Fire
After an uncharacteristically poor start, the Cowboys have won five of their last six duals entering the dual vs. Arizona State. The Pokes started their run, downing No. 18 Iowa State, 29-3. Just a week later, they went on to handily defeat No. 10 Mizzou, 28-6. At the beginning of February, the Cowboys ran over the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners, 37-6, before taking care of in-state rival and No. 10 Oklahoma, 29-9. The Pokes most recently shutout Clarion, 45-0, in their last road trip of the year. In each of their last five wins, the Cowboys have won at least seven of their 10 bouts.

[/B]

What's Going on in the Conference
The Cowboys finished the Big 12 dual competition with a perfect 3-0 record, handily defeating each of their opponents. Earlier this season, the Pokes suffered a 19-18 loss to Oklahoma in Norman in a non-conference dual, thus not affecting the conference record. The Pokes will face their Big 12 foes again on March 8 in the Big 12 Championships in Norman, Okla.

Caldwell Gets 100
Tyler Caldwell earned his 100th career win with his 19-1 technical fall over Curt Maas of Northern Iowa in his first match of the Joe Parisi Open on Nov. 23. He placed first at the tourney and now boasts a career total of 118-28.

He put together a 63-20 record while at OU and finished a 35-5 campaign as a Cowboy during the 2012-13 season.

[/B]

Welcome to the 100 Club, Mr. Perry
Stillwater, Okla., native Chris Perry was welcomed into the Oklahoma State wrestling 100-win club after he defeated Wyoming's Brent Havlik with an 11-3 major decision to earn his 100th career win on Dec. 14. He now totes a 114-11 career record and is the 36th Cowboy wrestler to join the 100-Win Club. Perry is also the fifth member of his family to earn the honor.

[/B]

Loaded Lineup
The Cowboys return five All-Americans for the 2013-14 season in Jon Morrison, Alex Dieringer, Tyler Caldwell, Blake Rosholt and 2013 national champion Chris Perry. Of the other five Cowboys in the lineup, four are NCAA qualifiers.

In total, the Oklahoma State lineup combines for one national champion, seven Big 12 champions and eight All-Americans.

[/B]

Cowboy Comebacks
Josh Kindig and Austin Marsden return to the Cowboy lineup after taking redshirts during the 2012-13 season. Kindig spent two years in the lineup as a true freshman and a sophomore before taking a year off. As a starter, Kindig produced a third-place and runner-up finish at Big 12s and was a two-time NCAA qualifier.

Marsden was taken from his redshirt late in the 2011-12 season after starting heavyweight Alan Gelogaev suffered a season-ending injury. Marsden went on to finish second at the Big 12 Championships and qualify for NCAAs as a true freshman.

Among the six duals, Sunday marks the fourth meeting between the schools in New York.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 23, 2014) For the fourth time in six seasons, the University of Wyoming wrestling team has won the regular-season dual title in the Western Wrestling Conference.

Wyoming (6-6 overall) finished with a 4-1 mark in the league, along with North Dakota State, but owns a head-to-head win over the Bison. The Cowboys toppled No. 19 NDSU by a 17-16 margin on Friday. UW also won the league dual title in 2009, 2010 and 2012. North Dakota State defeated South Dakota State on Sunday to ensure UW's place atop the conference.

"Our next goal is to win the conference championship and we are going to fine tune things over the next two weeks so that we can perform at our best. After going on the road and beating a top-20 team to win the regular-season title, we have a great amount of momentum to lead us to our next goal. These guys have continued to mature throughout a season filled with adversity but I feel very good about the next step."

THINGS TO KNOW

The Sun Devils last won the Pac-12 Championship in 2006 (also at Stanford), and have won the event 16 times in program history, which totals 35 contests since ASU joined the league during the 1978-79 season. ASU is the only team with a seven-year span of championships, from 1985-1991. A season ago, ASU hosted the event and took third with 110.5 points, behind champion Oregon State's 158.0 points and runner-up Boise State's 136.5.

ASU's most-recent conference individual champion was Anthony Robles, who won at 125 in 2009, 2010, and 2011.

Throughout program history, the Sun Devils have picked up more than 100 individual conference titles, 16 Coach of the Year honors, 16 Wrestler of the Year honors, and one newcomer of the year award.

LOOKING BACK

Sun Devil wrestling dropped its regular-season finale last week, falling to No. 6 Oklahoma State, 29-10.

ASU's three wins on the night came first at 174, when Ray Waters picked up a 4-2, sudden victory decision over Quinten Patterson, breaking Oklahoma State's shutout.

Blake Stauffer followed with an 11-2 major decision over Jordan Rogers at 184-pounds. Stauffer has won his last 10 duals, and the major decision is his fifth in that span. On his career, Stauffer is 10-0 in major decisions.

The final ASU win of the night came at 197 as Wesley Moore picked up an 8-4 decision over Darnell Bortz.

HEATING UP THE POLLS

With his major decision last week at Oklahoma State, Blake Stauffer is now ranked at No. 17 at 184 by Amateur Wrestling News, and remains in the D1CW rankings at No. 19.

MORE ON STAUFFER

Stauffer is currently riding a 10-match win streak, seven of which come with bonus points as five wins were major decisions and two were tech falls. On the season, Stauffer is 4-0 in major decisions, 4-0 in tech falls, and 1-0 in pins. In his career, Stauffer is 10-0 in major decisions, 6-0 in tech falls, and 4-0 in pins.

JOEL SMITH AND THE SPEEDY PINS

Joel Smith currently owns three of the fastest pin times so far this season, starting with his 18-second victory at the Cowboy Open on Nov. 2. Smith's pins at the Virginia Duals, 0:37 over Nebraska-Kearney's Colton Johnson and 1:30 over Old Dominion's Tristan Warner, are the second and third quickest pins in 2013-14, respectively.

Smith also recorded a pin in 4:03, and is second on the team with four, followed Ray Waters (165/174) who has six.

MORE ON PINS

Ray Waters' (165) pin of SIUE's Logun Taylor at 1:59 on Nov. 16 marks the fifth-quickest pin so far this season. Waters has recorded five more falls, which leads the team. His 2:31 takedown of Josh VanTine in ASU's dual with Northern Colorado marks the sixth-fastest time, and his 3:20 pin over Boise State's Cole Rice places him in eighth. Waters also recorded a pin at 3:49 over Harvard's Colton Peppleman is at No. 10 on the list.

ASU PICKS UP UPSET OVER OLD DOMINION

The Sun Devils competed in their lone head-to-head team competition last week, the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. ASU finished seventh overall, marking the sixth time finishing in the Top 8 and second at seventh (last, 1987).

After an opening-round loss to No. 8 seed Chattanooga (35-7), ASU rebounded with a win over then-No. 25 Old Dominion (21-15). ASU fell to Rider, 25-11, before topping Nebraska-Kearney, 32-6, in the seventh-place match.

Against Old Dominion, each team won five matches, but ASU was boosted by a pair of pins, the first as Ares Carpio won in 4:54 at 125, and the second from Joel Smith at 157 in 1:30.

Smith was the lone Sun Devil to go undefeated on the day, picking up two pins and a decision. In ASU's victory over Nebraska-Kearney, they picked up four bonus-point decisions: one pin from Smith, two major decisions from Kalin Goodsite (133) and Matt Kraus (141), and one victory via forfeit from Luke Bean at 197.

Kevin Radford has a pair of third-place finishes under his belt, the first at the Cowboy Open (Nov. 2), where he went 5-1 in the 184 weight class before finishing third at 174 at the Keystone Classic on Nov. 24. Radford also finished eighth overall at the Las Vegas Invite on Dec. 7.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Each of the Sun Devils' five home matches this season are scheduled back-to-back from Jan. 18 through Feb. 9. ASU will open the home slate with a tri-meet against Northern Colorado and Utah Valley on Jan. 18 before facing its first Pac-12 foe of the year, Boise State, on Jan. 24.

The Sun Devils will then take on Iowa State on Feb. 1 before taking on Pac-12 foe Stanford on Feb. 3, which will be aired on the Pac-12 Networks. ASU closes out the home schedule against Oregon State on Feb. 9, in another match that will be broadcast by the Pac-12 Networks.

DEVILS ON TV

Four of Arizona State's meets are set to be aired by the Pac-12 Networks in 2014, starting with the conference opener against Boise State. ASU will then have back-to-back televised duals against Stanford and Oregon State.

The 2014 Pac-12 Championships, hosted by Stanford on March 2 will also be aired on the Pac-12 Networks.

ADDING MATURITY TO THE ROSTER

This season, the Sun Devil roster features a pair of graduate transfers, James Brundage and Nick Rex. Brundage, who hails from Ossining, N.Y., received a BA in sociology at Rider University, and is now completing his masters in management at ASU. Rex joins the Sun Devils from Campbell University, where he earned a degree in communications, and was team captain during the 2011-13 seasons.

YOUNG GUNS

Some of the most experienced returning Sun Devils come in the form of Kevin Radford and Blake Stauffer. The redshirt junior and true sophomore combined for 43 wins last season, including 25 during the Pac-12 Conference slate.

NEW FACES

Similar to last season's squad, the Maroon and Gold features a passel of young newcomers this year, with five true freshman additions, and a trio of sophomores. Joining the Sun Devils this season are freshmen Kaleb Baker (Memphis, Tenn.), Jesse Calderon (Indio, Calif.), Seth Monty (Mesa, Ariz.), and Mech Spraggins (Belleville, Ill.). New to the sophomore class this season are Wesley Moore (Queen Creek, Ariz.), Pablo Moreno (Yuma, Ariz.), and Kaylon Sencio (Houston, Texas).

COACHING ADDITIONS

The 2013-14 season will see a new addition to the Sun Devil squad, as Tyrel Todd was named as an assistant coach in the Summer of 2013. Todd spent the last two seasons training with the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club, where he recently competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He was fourth at the 2008 Olympic trials at 84 kilograms, just missing a bid to the Beijing Olympics in the process. Following a standout career at Michigan, where Todd was a three-time All-American and 2009 Big Ten Conference Champion at 197 points, Todd served his alma mater as an assistant for the 2010 season before spending one year on the staff as an assistant at Cal Poly.

Connections
American University wrestling coach Teague Moore has strong connections to the Oklahoma State wrestling program as he was a three-time All-American for the Pokes and a individual NCAA champion in 1998. Catching Fire
After an uncharacteristically poor start, the Cowboys have won six of their last seven duals entering the dual vs. American. The Pokes recently shutout Clarion, 45-0, in their last road trip of the year. Last week the Cowboys sent the ASU Sun Devils back to Arizona with a 29-10 loss. In each of their last six wins, the Cowboys have won at least seven of their 10 bouts.

23. He placed first at the tourney and now boasts a career total of 119-28.

He put together a 63-20 record while at OU and finished a 35-5 campaign as a Cowboy during the 2012-13 season.

NC STATE WRESTLING: ACC Receives 34 NCAA Wrestling Championship Qualifier Allocations
NC State has five wrestlers ranked in both the final NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings and final RPI

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NCAA has announced the qualifier allocations for the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, with the Atlantic Coast Conference receiving a league-record 34 automatic spots, including multiple qualifiers in all 10 weight classes.

The ACC received five qualifiers in the 141- and the 197-pound weight class, and four qualifiers in the 149-, 184- and 285-pound pound weight classes. Three spots were awarded to the conference at 125 and 174. The 133-, 157- and 165-pound weight classes each received two slots.

The 2014 ACC Wrestling Championship will be held March 8 in Blacksburg, Va. All seven ACC schools are able to send one participant per weight class.

Each qualifying tournament was awarded spots per weight class based on current year data. Each wrestler was measured on the following: Division I winning percentage at the weight class; rating percentage index (RPI); and coaches ranking.

For each wrestler that reached the threshold in at least two of the three categories, his qualifying tournament was awarded a qualifying spot in that weight class. Each qualifying tournament, with automatic qualifying status, was awarded a minimum of one wrestler per weight class, which will go to the tournament champion, even if they did not have any wrestlers reach at least two of the three thresholds. NCAA tournament spots for each qualifying event will be awarded at the tournament based solely on place-finish.

After all of the qualifying events have concluded, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in-person to select the remaining 40 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 12. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers. The at-large selections will be made based on the following criteria: head-to-head competition; qualifying event placement; quality wins; results against common opponents; winning percentage; RPI; coaches ranking and the number of matches contested at that weight class.

The 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships return to Oklahoma City March 20-22 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

NC State also had five wrestlers ranked in both the final NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings and final RPI released by the NCAA.

141: Sophomore Sam Speno (22-11) is ranked 28th in the Coaches' Panel Rankings and 20th in the RPI.

149: Freshman Brian Hamann (19-10) is ranked 30th in both the Coaches' Panel Rankings in the RPI.

157: Junior Tommy Gantt (30-7) is ranked 18th in the Coaches' Panel Rankings and 16th in the RPI.

174: Freshman Pete Renda (24-8) is ranked 19th in the Coaches' Panel Rankings and 25th in the RPI.

285: Redshirt-sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski (35-2) is ranked second in the Coaches' Panel Rankings and third in the RPI.

Three Wrestlers Ranked in Final NCAA Division I Coaches' Panel

Dellefave, Dippery and Smith represent RU in panel, 157-pounder Perroti holds No. 32 RPI

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 28, 2014) ? The NCAA released the third and final installment of its coaches' panel rankings for the 2013-14 season Thursday, as three Scarlet Knights earned national recognition.

Redshirt senior 133-pounder Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), freshman 141-pounder Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) and redshirt sophomore heavyweight Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) were ranked by the final panel after receiving recognition in the previous two. The panels serve as one of the tools used in the selection process in order to qualify for the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, to be held in Oklahoma City, Okla., from March 20-22.

The NCAA also released its second individual RPI of the season, revealing Dellefave at No. 24, Dippery at No. 25, Smith at No. 10 and redshirt sophomore 157-pounder Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) at No. 32. Perrotti wrapped up 2013-14 season at 13-11, having wrestled four ranked foes.

FULL RANKINGS

Smith picked up the No. 16 spot in the panel ? the highest ranking of any heavyweight in the EIWA. He currently stands as the lone RU wrestler in the national rankings, earning the No. 16/13/17 (The Open Mat/InterMat/W.I.N.) ranking among heavyweights. Smith wrapped up the regular season at 22-5 and 13-2 in dual action, as four of his five losses have come against ranked opponents. All four of those losses came by three points or less, with his match against then-No. 6/11/17 Spencer Myers of Maryland ending in the second round of tiebreakers at the second annual "Grapple at the Garden" (Dec. 1).

Smith owns a 10-bout winning streak heading into the 2014 EIWA Championships, set for March 8-9 in Philadelphia, Pa.

Dippery, who finished his rookie campaign with a 21-11, earned the No. 29 ranking in the panel at 141 pounds. Five EIWA grapplers sit ahead of Dippery after the final panel. He won his final bout of the season, 3-1, over Drexel's David Pearce, while defeating Columbia's then-No. 13 (AWN) Matt Bystol in the process, 3-0, on Jan. 3.

Dellefave came in at No. 32 at 133 pounds. He finished his final season "On the Banks" 10-6 after qualifying for the NCAA Championships last season as a junior. He also placed third in last season's EIWA Tournament.

About the NCAA Division I Coaches Panel

Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament.

For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. In order to be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.

Hempstead, NY - As the Hofstra Wrestling team prepares for the 2014 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships on Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9 in the Palestra at the University of Pennsylvania, the NCAA has announced its final Coaches Panel rankings, the Division I Rating Percentage Index (RPI) and the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships Qualifier Allocations.

Each of the nine qualifying tournaments were awarded spots per weight class based on current year data (see chart below). Each wrestler was measured on the following: Division I winning percentage; rating percentage index (RPI); and coaches ranking.

Five Hofstra wrestlers are ranked in the top 33 in both the Coaches' Panel rankings and the RPI. Heading the list is 141-pound senior Luke Vaith (25-5), who is ranked seventh in the coaches rankings and 11th in the RPI. Graduate-student Joe Booth (28-7) is ranked 14th in the RPI and 15th in the coaches panel at 165 pounds. Senior Jamie Franco (19-10) is ranked 16th in the RPI and 22nd in the coaches ranking at 125 pounds. Red-shirt freshman Jamel Hudson (16-4) is ranked 19th in the RPI and 20th by the coaches at 133. Junior Cody Ruggirello (22-8) is ranked 22nd by the coaches and 25th in the RPI at 149 pounds.

For each wrestler that reached the threshold in at least two of the three categories, his qualifying tournament-for Hofstra it's the EIWA Championship-was awarded a qualifying spot in that weight class.

Twenty-nine of the 33 spots in each of the 10 weight classes have been allocated to the qualifying tournaments with the EIWA Championships receiving 47 spots. The Big Ten Conference received 74 spots, followed by the EIWA with 47, the Mid-American Conference (MAC) with 41, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) with 34, the Big 12 with 24, the Eastern Wrestling League with 22, the Pacific-12 Conference with 17, the Southern Conference with 16, and the West Regional with 15.

The EIWA received seven spots at 197 pounds, six at 125 pounds, five each at 141, 157, and 165 pounds, four spots each at 133, 149, 184 and 285 pounds, and three at 174 pounds.

Hofstra is in its first season in the EIWA after a 12-year tenure in the Colonial Athletic Association where they captured 11 titles.

Wrestling Seniors Put on a Show in 43-6 Victory Over American[/B]

STILLWATER, Okla. ? Oklahoma State wrestling closed out its dual season with a 43-6 win over American. The dual was highlighted by wins from the four starting Cowboy seniors, three of which were falls.

Altogether, the Cowboys earned five bonus-point victories with four falls and a major decision.

"It's what you like to see at the end of the year," coach John Smith said. "Those are always big bonus points for us during tournaments, and it's the postseason for us now. Falls, tech-falls and major decisions are what it's all about from here on out."

Taking to the mat for the final time in Gallagher-Iba Arena was Jon Morrison (133), Tyler Caldwell (165), Chris Perry (174) and Blake Rosholt (197).

The Cowboys secured the first six points of the day when the Eagles forfeited the bout at 125 pounds.

Fourth-ranked Morrison finished his time in Gallagher-Iba with a 9-3 decision over Esteban Gomez-Rivera of American. The Cowboy finishes the regular season 23-1.

"I couldn't have picked a better school to come wrestle for, and I feel so lucky that I got to wrestle in front of such great fans and all my friends that I've made here over the past five years," Morrison said. "So many great wrestlers came before me here and there will be a lot of great wrestlers after me here, so it's an honor to be part of that Cowboy tradition."

At 141 pounds, true freshman and No. 20 Anthony Collica finished his first dual season as a Cowboy with an 8-3 win over AU's Spencer Slishman.

Josh Kindig, ranked 10th at 149 pounds, earned the first fall of the day, sticking Cole Moseley in 3:25.

The lone loss for the Pokes came at 157 pounds, where Colton Thomas stepped into the lineup for the Pokes and faced John Boyle.

Caldwell had the fastest fall of the day, pinning Cristian Mayasa in 1:54. The Sooner-turned-Cowboy finished the 2013-14 regular season, 22-3, with three falls.

"It's been a good experience, but I still have two big tournaments left. To me, it wasn't really about finishing up my career," Caldwell said. "It has been a great two years here. The fans have been great, and we're looking to finish it off right in the next three weeks."

Stillwater, Okla., native Chris Perry earned his final win of the regular season in the form of a 4:36 fall over Keithen Cast. The defending 174-pound national champion went 34-1 inside the walls of GIA during his time at OSU.

"It's always good to get a pin at this time of the year. I feel like this is my time of the year," Perry said. "I woke up knowing it was March yesterday, and if you're a wrestler, that's an exciting time. This is the time that I would get excited about since I was little kid. Something I've always wanted to do was finish my career out the right way; only losing once ever in Gallagher is nice for me. The fans are great here, and I've loved every minute of it and I wouldn't trade it for the world."

Redshirt freshman Nolan Boyd added four points to the team score with his 10-1 major decision over Jason Grimes. The win was Boyd's 28th of the year and his sixth major decision.

At 197 pounds, Blake Rosholt made his final appearance in Gallagher-Iba after sitting out much of the season due to injury. Rosholt finished out his dual season with a bang, defeating Brett Dempsey by fall in 2:48.

"It's awesome to go out like that," Rosholt said. "It's awesome to just think that I've been here with some of my best friends like Chris and Tyler the last couple of years, and Jon and all these guys in my class. To come out and put on a good show for the last dual of our career in Gallagher-Iba, it was great."

The dual was finished out with a 4-3 decision from Austin Marsden over Blake Herrin to secure the 11th dual victory for the Pokes this season.

The Cowboys begin postseason action on March 8 in Norman, Okla., as they look for their 46th conference championship title.

"We are now solely focused on postseason play now," Smith said. "I think it's about individual performances and the team will take care of itself if the individual performances take care of themselves."

FIGHTING ILLINI WRESTLING

Eight Illini Earn Pre-Seeds for Big Ten Championships

Defending conference champion Delgado earns highest seed at No. 2

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. ? Eight members of the Fighting Illini wrestling team have earned pre-seeds for the 2014 Big Ten Championships as voted by the conference coaches, the Big Ten office announced Monday. Defending Big Ten champion Jesse Delgado (125) leads the Illini with a No. 2 seed, while Zane Richards (133), Jackson Morse (165) and Tony Dallago (174) notched the No. 5 seed. Steven Rodrigues (141) and 2012 Big Ten champion Mario Gonzalez (197) earned the No. 6 seed, Zac Brunson (157) came in at No. 7 and Christopher Lopez (HWT) grabbed the No. 12 spot.

Jesse Delgado recorded a 7-1 conference record this season, with his only loss coming from top-seeded Nico Megaludis of Penn State in a controversial 5-4 decision. The junior has posted wins over No. 4 seeded Ryan Taylor (Wisconsin), No. 5 Conor Youtsey (Michigan), No. 6 Tim Lambert (Nebraska) and No. 8 Nick Robert (Ohio State). The defending Big Ten and NCAA champion notched 17 total dual meet victories this season and led the team with 80 dual points scored.

In his first year as the 133-pound starter, Zane Richards posted a 6-2 Big Ten record. His only losses in the conference came from No. 2 seeded Tyler Graff of Wisconsin and No. 4 seeded Cashe Quiroga of Purdue. His overall dual record is 14-5, and he scored the third-most dual points on the team during the season.

Steven Rodrigues posted a win over No. 8 seeded Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin before missing two months of action with an injury. He dropped his first dual back to No. 7 Danny Sabatello (Purdue) but posted a win over Pat Greco (Northwestern) two days later in the final conference dual of the season. Before his injury, he defeated No. 5 seeded Josh Dziewa of Iowa in the semifinals of the Midlands Championships.

Zac Brunson posted a 5-3 conference record in his first season as Illinois' 157-pound starter. The redshirt-freshman faced tough competition throughout the conference season, as his three losses came from top-seeded Isaac Jordan (Wisconsin), No. 2 James Green (Nebraska) and No. 5 Dylan Alton (Penn State).

Like Brunson, Jackson Morse has squared off against some of the conference's top competition. He compiled a 4-3 Big Ten record, with his losses coming from top-seeded David Taylor of Penn State, No. 3 Pierce Harger of Northwestern and No. 4 Dan Yates of Michigan. The redshirt-junior totaled 15 dual wins this season and scored the second-most dual points on the team with 64.

Tony Dallago grabbed the No. 5 seed after posting a 6-2 conference record. Dallago dropped matchups against top seeded Robert Kokesh (Nebraska) and No. 2 Matt Brown (Penn State), but notched wins over No. 6 Mark Martin (Ohio State), No. 7 Scott Liegel (Wisconsin) and No. 8 Collin Zeerip (Michigan). The redshirt-senior has recorded six pins this season to total 38 career pins, the most in school history.

Mario Gonzalez has missed time this season due to injury, but has won both of his conference matchups against No. 8 seeded Timmy McCall (Wisconsin) and No. 10 Caleb Kolb (Nebraska). Christopher Lopez finished the conference season 0-8 after facing four wrestlers that are ranked in the top-10 nationally, but is coming off of his biggest win of the season after defeating #15 Amarveer Dhesi of Oregon State University at the NWCA National Duals.

The 2014 Big Ten Championships will take place March 8-9 in Madison, Wis. Session one will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT.

Four Win Titles, Five to NCAAs
Scherer named Most Outstanding Wrestler

STANFORD, Calif. ? The Stanford wrestling team crowned four individual champions, the most in school history, on its way to a second-place finish (134.0 points) at the 2014 Pac-12 Wrestling Championships, Sunday, at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. Five Cardinal wrestlers earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championships, tying for the most in school history.

Senior 197 pounder Dan Scherer knocked-off ninth-ranked Taylor Meeks of Oregon State in the finals, 4-2 in sudden victory, and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. It is the first conference championship for the St. Louis, Mo., native, who is 20-4 on the year.

"With it tied up going into overtime, I felt I was dictating the match the whole time," said Scherer. "I could feel him breaking down and getting tired towards the end there. Meeks is really good with his hips, so you've got to pick your shots and get in clean when you can."

Redshirt senior Ryan Mango, ranked No. 9 at 133 pounds, became Stanford's fifth two-time conference champion, defeating 17th-ranked Devon Lotito of Cal Poly 5-2. A two-time All-American, Mango also won a Pac-12 Championship at 125 pounds in 2012 as he moves to 27-3 on the year. He joins Jeff Bradley (1985, 1986), Dave Lee (1985, 1986), Tanner Gardner (2007, 2008) and Nick Amuchastegui (2010, 2012) as repeat champions.

Sophomore Evan Silver became Stanford's 16th conference champion with an 8-6 decision over Rami Haddidian of Boise State at 125 pounds. The Chevy Chase, Md., native, who finished as the Pac-12 runner-up as a redshirt freshman in 2013, improves to 23-4 on the season.

Redshirt freshman Jim Wilson secured the 165-pound title with a convincing 5-1 decision over Arizona State's Nick Rex. Wilson becomes the first Cardinal freshman to win a conference championship since Jimmy Aguirre in 1993. Wilson registered a major decision over Cal Poly's Travis Berridge in the first round and a 12-4 major decision against Oregon State's Toney Chay in the semifinals to move to 33-6 on the year. His 33 wins are the third-most by a freshman in school history.

"It is just an absolute thrill to win a championship," said Wilson. "Thinking about all the work that we put in during the season, running at 5:30 in the morning, all of our training, and all of our drilling. In the end it paid off."

Senior Kyle Meyer finished third at 174 pounds, and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Meyer defeated Boise State's Austin Dewey, 9-4, in the third-place bout. He is having his most successful season with the Cardinal, moving to 26-11 overall.

Redshirt freshman heavyweight Josh Marchok also finished in the top half of his bracket. The Schaumburg, Ill., native pinned Cal Poly's Spencer Empey in 1:30 to place third in the conference. It marked his fifth fall of the season.

Oregon State won the team title with 155.5 points, crowning three champions while three other Beavers finished as the runner-ups. Stanford's second-place finish is the highest under sixth-year head coach Jason Borrelli, and ties for the best in school history. It is just the third time the Cardinal has finished as the runner-up and the first since 2008.

Mango has now qualified for the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in his career. Scherer and Silver are both two-time NCAA qualifiers, while Meyer and Wilson will make their first appearances.

Stanford will head to the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., March 20-22 to close out its 2013-14 season.

WWC announces West Regional pre-seeds for Saturday

UVU will host the NCAA West Regional/WWC Championships on Saturday at the UCCU Center.

March 5, 2014[/B]

OREM, Utah -- The Western Wrestling Conference announced on Wednesday the pre-seed rankings for the 2014 NCAA West Regional/WWC Championship, hosted by Utah Valley University at the UCCU Center in Orem, Utah, on March 8.

Winners of the NCAA West Regional weight classes earn bids to the NCAA Championships. The event also serves as the conference championship. The WWC is comprised of six school including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.

Senior 141-pounder Chase Cuthbertson rounds out UVU's 10 probable starters as he is seeded fifth in his weight class.

Wyoming has won the last four West Regional team titles after just edging out North Dakota State for its fourth straight title last season. The Cowboys also earned the 2013-14 WWC regular-season dual title as well this season after they held the tiebreaker over the Bison. Both UW and NDSU tied with identical 4-1 WWC dual records, but Wyoming took the trophy thanks to a head-to-head victory over North Dakota State.

The pre-seeds were voted on by the conference coaches and ranked the top six wrestlers in each weight class. Final seeds for bracketing will be determined Friday evening at the Coaches' Seeding Meeting.

The NCAA recently released the all allocations for the 2014 Division I Wrestling Championships and the West Regional/WWC has been awarded 15 automatic qualifier spots. The breakdown of the 15 automatic bids per weight class is as follows: 125 (2), 133 (1), 141 (1), 149 (1), 157 (2), 165 (3), 174 (1), 184 (2), 197 (1) and 285 (1).

After all the qualifying events have concluded, the NCAA DI Wrestling Committee will meet in-person to select the remaining 40 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 12. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers. Last year the WWC had three of its wrestlers receive at-large selections.

Qualifiers from this weekend's NCAA West Regional will compete at the 2014 NCAA Championships, that will be held March 20-22 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.
